The Pac-Man cartoon was first, and was soon followed by Saturday Supercade, Dragon’s Lair, and Pole Position. Saturday Supercade featured short segments based on several games: Donkey Kong (both original and Junior), Frogger, Kangaroo, Pitfall, Q*Bert, and Space Ace. And this week we’re joined by Eclectic Lee, a longtime friend of the Flopcast, for a Top 4 1/2 List of characters from these goofy shows. Along the way, we’ll discuss the voice actors, the games themselves, and the mystery of Quickclaw, Pitfall Harry’s eyepatch-wearing pet lion. Metal and rap were reigning supreme with releases from Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer, and The Beastie Boys, but pop and rock offered up some really strong records as well with major releases from Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Berlin, The Pretenders, REM, Huey Lewis and the News, and Sparks. Even The Monkees made a huge comeback for their 20th Anniversary!

There are many reasons why Santana Maynard is an ideal choice to be a guest on this podcast. She is an actor, both on screen and behind the microphone doing voiceover for anime. She is a producer of live events for the FanExpo family of fandom conventions. And with her presences on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Patreon, she is a talented and very effective influencer. For example, she regularly influences me to get out of bed early and drive her to cute coffee places in the Valley multiple times a week. Which is convenient for her because she happens to have been my roommate for over 3 years. In this episode Santana influenced me to play a drinking game, and we discussed her favorite anime series “My Hero Academia” which I have been watching with her. Later she randomly invents a debate game putting various fictional characters up against each other in various contests to see who would win. What does it take to turn foam, felt, fabric and a little imagination into believable characters that can make an audience laugh, react and occasionally forget there’s a human underneath the table?

This month, Jen, Mike & Channing head backstage with Beau from the Dragon Con Puppetry Track and special guests Bob & Carl, The Sci Fi Janitors, for a conversation all about the craft, performance and organized unpredictability of puppetry.

From Materials to Performance

Creating puppets is only the beginning. In this episode, the crew talks about the work that goes into building characters that feel alive, from design and fabrication to voice work, movement, timing and audience interaction.

The discussion covers the practical side of puppetry as well, including stage setups, performance challenges, technical coordination and the balancing act of working live in front of convention crowds.
