This is a quick and very boring Weekly Run Down just for completeness’ sake. On Monday, we returned from our trip to the Dolomites, and I spent the rest of this week back home at my parents’ house. I only did the same 5-minute standing yoga class every morning after getting up (to keep up my yoga streak and earn my daily “blue dot” for Peloton). I otherwise completely took time off from exercising and just enjoyed time with my family (and we also had a belated birthday party to organize).

I spent this week in the Dolomites on a skiing trip with my family. I grew up skiing in the Dolomites every year since I was 4 years old, and going back there with my family is always a highlight. I also rented a snowboard for a day. I am a much better skier, but I also very much enjoy snowboarding every once in a while. As you can tell from my weekly workouts, I kept my yoga streak (5 min in the morning after waking up) and then spent most of the day on skis! Recap to come!

A couple of weeks ago, I ran the Shamrock‘n Half Marathon here in Sacramento. It’s been a while since I did a half marathon (the last one was the Urban Cow Half Marathon in 2023), and I am so glad I decided – on a whim – earlier this year to sign up.

The race start and finish line were at Sutter Health Park, home of our minor league baseball team (Sacramento River Cats) and the temporary home of the (former) Oakland Athletics (who will be moving to Las Vegas).

Having a race start and end at a ballpark has the perks of real restrooms and plenty of parking. I got a good night’s sleep the night before and was up at 5:30 am to get ready. Race start was at 7:45 am, but I wanted to be there early so as not to feel rushed.

I hadn’t run a race in a while, and I was a little nervous beforehand (I always am, even though I know that there is nothing to be nervous about. You show up and give your best. That’s it! That’s all we can do.) Still, it’s hard not to have expectations.

Runners tend to set A, B, and C goals for their races (The A goal is the “shoot-for-the-moon” goal that is possible on a perfect day, the B goal is the realistic accomplishment based on your relevant fitness and what you believe you should be able to accomplish, and the C goal would leave you satisfied, knowing you gave your best effort.)

My goals were:

A – hang on to the pacer and finish in 1:50

B – beat my PR of 1:53:09

C – run a sub-2

and as always

D – just finish and have fun

The race was organized in three waves based on estimated finish time:

Wave 1 (7:45 am start): Under 2:00 finish time

Wave 2 (7:55 am start): 2:00 – 2:29 finish time

Wave 3 (8:05 am start): 2:30+ finish time

I signed up for Wave 1 and had plans to stick with the 1:50 pacer. I wasn’t sure if that was reasonable based on my half marathon training pace, but I thought I’d try.

After warming up and using the restrooms (not once, but twice), I went to the start line and found the pace group. We got off to a relatively good start and there was a decent group of people gathering around.… Read more

After warming up and using the restrooms (not once, but twice), I went to the start line and found the pace group. We got off to a relatively good start and there was a decent group of people gathering around. I felt pretty good but could tell that the pacer started out a little hot, about 10-20 seconds faster than pace target in the first few miles. I am not sure if the person was inexperienced or if they had some sort of strategy (positive splits?) that they didn’t share with the group but after a few miles I decided to hang back and run my own pace. I didn’t want to be pulled into a race that I couldn’t sustain.

I was running this race by myself, but I used the Adidas Running (formerly Runtastic) app again during the race, so that my family and Tanja could track me. The cool thing about the Adidas Running App is that people who follow you can send “cheers” (like “applause”, “Go, go, go”, or acoustic “La Ola waves”) and even short personal “voice messages” during live events. My dad, mom, sister and Tanja also have the app and were able to follow my race from afar, sending cheers at regular intervals throughout my run. It was so motivating to have them “in my pocket” and I think I had a huge smile on my face every time a cheer came through!

I finished slightly behind the pace group and missed the 1:50 finish, but I did beat my previous PR! I finished in 1:51:04, and I was absolutely stoked. I felt good, the weather was perfect (mid-60s), and my training once again delivered me to the finish line with time to spare!

I prepared for the race with a training plan from Team Wilpers, and my predicted half marathon pace was 8:34 min/mi, and I exceeded that. I also barely missed an award in my brand-new age group by 9 (!) seconds. I placed 4th out of 115 female runners in my age group. Not too shabby.

And isn’t this a beautiful medal?

Here are some overall thoughts on the race organization:

Registration and Packet Pick Up

I was able to register online and they offered multiple-days for race packet pickup at Fleet Feet, or early morning race day pick-up.

Race-course

The course is nice and mostly flat and very similar to the Urban Cow race course, the difference being that the Shamrock’n Half starts and ends at the Baseball Stadium in West Sacramento (not in Land Park)). However, the actual course is pretty much the same. We ran over the Tower Bridge with a small loop through Old Town, then headed south towards the Land Park neighborhood, a loop through landpark and then back towards Downtown on the Sacramento River Bike trail. There were enough aid/water stations (every two miles) and they were adequately staffed with volunteers who offered both Tailwind electrolytes and water.

Finish line and Post Race Amenities

The finish line was INSIDE the baseball stadium, which was really a cool way to end the race. Right behind the finish line, you were able to pick up your medal and water. They also offered a free post-race beer, a sandwich and a snack bag (with chips, a protein bar, and nuts).

Results

The results were up instantly and there was a little tent with iPads set up, where you could check your official finish time.

Photography

The race photographers did a great job getting pictures at multiple locations. The photos were available to look at online within 48 hours and they were available for FREE! Big bonus points!

Here are a couple from the race.

Shortly before crossing the finish line

The race is small-ish (4000+ runners this year) but it’s well-organized and I’d run again in a heartbeat. I really don’t know why I haven’t participated before. It was really fun and since it’s local, it’s nice to just roll out of bed and get to the start line in 15 minutes

The registration fee was appropriate ($116 — I registered late) for all the perks (microfiber race shirt, post-race beer + sandwich, awesome finisher medal, age group awards, time tracking and free race photos and a free ticket to a Rivercats Baseball Game, and a couple of other discount offers!). The course was really fun to run – flat and (somewhat) scenic, and there were plenty of spectators along the way.

This was my 10th official half marathon. I started my running “career“ kind of late, in my late thirties, and I wish I had found my love for running sooner, but I am still thrilled with what I have been able to accomplish in the last 10+ years. They always say that you’ll lose speed as you age, but I must not have hit my peak yet because I’ve been able to consistently improve my race times and have run both my half marathon and marathon PRs in the last 1.5 years.

Not ready to give up yet!

I usually take it easy the week after a race before I ease myself back into a more structured weekly workout routine. This week was for yoga, walks, and some light strength training. I also did a little bit of cycling and a short run towards the end of the week.

Monday

15 Min Morning Yoga Flow – Nico (7/30/24) — Shenani-gains

20 Min 90s Walk – JJ (12/6/25)

My legs and glutes definitely felt sore from the half marathon on Sunday, so I just did a yoga flow in the morning and went for a little 20-minute walk around lunchtime to get some light movement in.

Tuesday

10 Min WHM: Intention Meditation – Kristin (3/8/21) — Woman & Wellness Self Care

10 Min Yoga Flow – Denis (4/15/25)

20 Min Power Walk: Menopause – Susie (3/1/26)

I started my morning with meditation and then continued with a light arm training and a yoga flow. I also used my lunch break for a quick walk with Susie.

Wednesday

10 Min Meditation: Menopause – Chelsea (3/1/26)

30 Min Intention Settings Walk – Kirsten (8/19/25) — Woman & Wellness Self Care

I am still keeping it low-key and did some meditation, yoga, and a bodyweight strength class this morning. I also went for a 30-minute walk on my lunch break.

Thursday

10 Min Empathy Meditation – Anna (6/27/23)

5 Min Full Body Stretch – Joslyn (3/8/26) — Woman & Wellness Self Care

I started my day with meditation and a yoga flow. My Garmin said that I am finally “fully recovered”, so I decided to also hop on the bike this morning for a quick 20-minute ride to get the legs moving again.

Friday

I opted for meditation, a yoga flow for hips, and a 20-minute strength class this morning.

I met up with Tanja – virtually again – for a 30-minute Rock Ride this morning. She also invited me to do a 15-minute core class, and of course, I said yes. It was a great class that flew, not least because Tunde kept it entertaining by cycling through the different core exercises every 30 seconds. I also hit 7k Peloton minutes during that class. Hooray!

BLOGGING

I am behind on blogging and blog reading again and you might have noticed that I am taking a going-backwards kind of approach to catching up with all of you. Let’s see how far I get before traveling will derail my best efforts once again. (How you all keep on top of posting – some of you almost daily – while working, taking care of families (and yourselves) and/or traveling – is beyond me but all I can say is that I am trying my best.

QUALITY TIME

The reason for my being MIA in the last couple of weeks: Tanja was here for 9 days over my birthday! We had the best time and I am so thankful that she was able to come and spend time with me. I know it was a little bit for her own benefit (because I know she just missed California terribly), but a lot more for my selfish benefit because she was here to hang out with me on my big birthday and that was the second best thing to spending it with my sister (haha). What a treat!

RECOVERY

I had a low-key recovery week after my race on Sunday. My new Garmin watch (which I’ll have to tell you all about sometime) predicted an 80-hour recovery (3.3 days) and this pretty much jived with how I was feeling (sore!) the first few days after the half marathon. It was nice to sleep in a little longer and to focus on yoga and some light strength training sessions this week.

HEAT WAVE

While other parts of the country are dealing with snow or torrential rain, California is experiencing an early season heat wave with temps into the 90s this week. I’ve been to the pool and I’ve been wearing shorts and flip flops. But in a little over a week, I’ll be on the way to the Alps for some skiing with my family. Wild. [*whispers*] This is climate change. How’s the weather where you are?

WEEKEND PLANS

I am working today, so it’s a “short” weekend for me. I usually get my grocery shopping and other errands done on Fridays, so I have time on the weekend to do other things, but because I am working today, I’ll be doing my grocery shopping and some errands done on Saturday. And I will be getting ready for my trip home because I leave on Tuesday!… Read more

I am a bit behind with blogging (and reading) again, can you tell? But, in order to keep my goals list at the forefront of my mind, I’ll belatedly post my monthly check-in on goals and accomplishments for February.

PERSONAL

Read 2 books a month.
Yeah, no. I am at 1.3 books. I barely finished „The Age of Innocence“ and then only got started on a new book (Nicole’s debut novel). I swear, it has nothing to do with the book not being engaging enough and everything to do with my time management.

Use facemasks weekly when I do my Sunday meditation.
I did it once at the beginning of the month and then promptly forgot about it.

Prioritize sleep and rest.
I did not hit my sleep goal of 7.5 hours, but I am working towards it. I averaged 6:51 hours, and my sleep score was pretty good.

Estate Planning
No progress made.

Declutter/organize garage
Nope.

WORK

Keep advocating for myself.
No real “progress” made here, other than continuing to try and show up with a professional attitude and making a good impression on my new supervisor.

Establish some new work-friend relationships.
I continue to get to know and socialize more with the people who sit/work in my immediate surroundings. They’re not working on the same projects with me, but it’s nice to have a chat or go for a lunchtime walk together.

BONUS ACCOMPLISHMENTS

I got a head start on our tax return. After the year that we had dealing with my mother-in-law’s estate, the tax situation was a bit more complicated this time, but I still refuse to pay someone for something that I am able to figure out. It’s complicated, but not that complicated.

I booked my flight home for March/April. Hooray! My sister and I also decided that we’ll have a little birthday party while I am there, and I get to invite (and see) some friends.

I mentioned elsewhere that I received a performance award (time off + a little cash) at work. Despite being told otherwise before, our Science Center was able to recognize the people who have stuck around, and I am so appreciative that our work and dedication were rewarded

I presented progress updates for one of my projects at work and got some positive feedback.

We tried a couple of new recipes, both of which were so good that we’ll definitely make them again. One was a zucchini-bake, and the other was a Thai-inspired salad with cabbage and chicken.

Another half marathon is in the books. This week was a taper week, so lots of low key activities, and then I ran the local Shamrock’n Half Marathon for the first time this year on Sunday!
You might have seen me use the hashtag #separatebuttogether whenever I post about (virtually) working out with friends across the globe. Well, this week, my friend and #pelobestie Tanja is here and we actually get to work out #together in person! What a treat.

Monday

10 Min Daily Meditation – Chelsea (3/1/26) — Woman & Wellness Self Care

15 Min Morning Yoga Flow – Chelsea (11/14/24) — The Streak

30 Min New Tracks Walk – Emma (2/20/26)

Today was an active rest day. I slept through my alarm (again!) and I am taking this as a sign that my body is trying to tell me to rest today. Chelsea’s Morning Yoga Flow was just what I needed though and I also got to take Emma’s newest New Track Walk with my friend Sherry.

Tuesday

10 Min Morning Meditation – Anna (12/18/25)

10 Min Restorative – Anna (9/23/25) — The Streak

I was up bright and early today to complete yesterday’s half marathon pace intervals run. No harm in moving the workout days around a little bit. I felt good today.

I took today off, so I could spend time with Tanja. We went for a walk around our neighborhood in the morning and later in the afternoon we went to our neighborhood gym where we were able to workout on the treadmill next to each other (see picture above!). It’s so wonderful to be able to work out together in person for a change and not just virtually through the Peloton app!

Tanja and I were out and about all day, so we considered it an active rest day.

Saturday

15 Min Pool Swim
15 Min Focus Flow: For Hips – Anna (10/30/25) — Shenani-gains/Woman & Wellness Self Care/The Streak

16 Min Outdoor Walking

Tanja and I went to the Bay Area today and met up with my friend Susi and her husband. We also briefly went to the coast to enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean. We originally had planned to do a little hike while we were there, but that didn’t work out timewise. Instead, we jumped into the pool for a little bit when we got back and I did a yoga flow (while Tanja tried out my Peloton) and we went for a short walk around the neighborhood after dinner.

Sunday

15 Min 80s Rock Walk – Jon (3/8/26) — Shenani-gains

5 Min Standing Yoga – Anna (4/21/22) — The Streak

Tanja and I walked to the local park today and we ran together for a little bit and then Tanja walked and I completed my 8-mile long run. It was a beautiful and warm, sunny day.

Current Challenges + Trackers:

I picked three trackers for March and I hope I’ll be able to complete them. March is busy with my friend visiting and my traveling to Germany later this month. We’ll see what I can do. I’ll try to continue my daily yoga streak, sprinkle in some self-care classes/activities and complete the “Shenani-gains” tracker (with classes to honor Women’s History Month and St. Patrick Day).

How is it the end of February? The month flew by, didn’t it? And a weekly practice like the Finding Joy in Gratitude Collective seems to be speeding up time somehow. I am a little late with this, but here’s my last week of FIGs for the Finding Joy in Gratitude Collective. Thank you again for hosting, Elisabeth. It’s been so much fun.

February 22

I am grateful for my sourdough starter “Linus” which reliably helps me bake delicious homemade bread. I’ve been playing around with some new recipes. There’s nothing better than a fresh loaf of bread out of the oven. Amirite?

February 23

I enjoyed a lunchtime walk with my Peloton friend Sherry. It was so nice and sunny outside.

February 24

It’s been one full year since our mandatory RTO (return to office). I’ve gotten used to going to the office again every day. I still miss my home office and all the flexibility I had, but I am also grateful that I am still here, that I have a nice, quiet window cubicle with a standing desk (with nesting owls outside of it) and that I still have other little perks in my job that I don’t take for granted (like my 4-day work week).

My coworker brought me a full bag of grapefruits, oranges, and lemons from her garden. That’s so sweet that she’s sharing her bounty with me.

February 26

Ok, this is a silly FIG, but I think (fingers crossed) I fixed my coffee maker yesterday. (Nicole can relate to the elation.) It’s not like it stopped working completely, but for the last week or so, it had been throwing a hissy fit, including various “error codes”, and I had to restart it multiple times before it would finally run a full brewing cycle. I couldn’t figure out what the problem was, but decided to run not one, but three “cleaning cycles” last night (even though I thought I had fairly recently done that). That seems to have fixed it. This morning, it had no issues at all. I hope it just wanted some TLC.

Bonus FIG: I picked up takeout for dinner. We love the burritos from our local taqueria.

I received a sweet note from Engie this morning, letting me know that she now frequently thinks of me when she goes on her morning walks with Hannah. Awww.… Read more

I wore shorts and tank tops for running… in February! I love winter, and I don’t mind a little bit of rain and cold, but I am also very thankful for blue skies, sunshine, and warmer temps in February!
