We know this episode is coming fast on the heels of our last one and it’s not posting on our usual Friday, but we wanted to make sure we got this up before the end of the year! This week, Jen and Martinique talk to Tish Hayes, Information Literacy Librarian at Moraine Valley Community College and one of the organizers of the Information Literacy Summit, a day-long conference in the Chicago suburbs focused on information literacy. We discuss the history of the Summit, some of the challenges of planning it, what the organizers see for the future, what they are looking for in proposals for 2019, as well as how we all are grappling with the idea of news literacy (the 2019 Summit theme) at our own institutions. Jen and Martinique love this conference, and we thoroughly enjoyed hearing about what goes into planning it. Have a listen!

We discussed the PIL study on news literacy and how it helps us understand more about how our students view, use, and make meaning from news.

Process Cards
Tish mentioned using Kevin Seeber’s Process Cards to explore news and literacy with students at her College.

Martinique and Freeda also share their current research project and where they plan to go with it in the future.

We also want to offer a big apology to our listeners for the audio quality on this episode. We had some technical difficulties that made Freeda’s audio in particular sound poor. The problems were entirely on our end, but we had such an excellent conversation that we still wanted to share it. Please know that improving our audio production is a top priority for us in the coming months, and we hope future episodes will be much easier on the ears! In the meantime, thanks for your patience.
