<p>Nigerian celebrities fall in love loudly, start their marriages spectacularly, and too often split in ways the internet never forgets. From leaked audio notes, courtroom documents, social media confessions, and more, the entertainment industry has given us some of the most dramatic marriage implosions of any generation, and the comment sections have never recovered.</p>

<p>The trending Frank Edoho situation reignited it all. In May 2026, allegations linking singer Chike to Edoho&#8217;s estranged wife Sandra Onyenucheya, complete with a purported leaked audio reopened a public conversation the veteran broadcaster had tried to keep private for almost two years. Chike locked his comments. Sandra denied the affair and alleged years of abuse. Frank posted about &#8220;moving forward quietly&#8221; and left the rest to the timeline.</p>

<p>The internet, predictably, was not quiet. And it sent us all the way back — to every couple we had loved, rooted for, and watched unravel. </p>

<p>Here are the ten that hit hardest.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="880" height="539" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12.png" alt="From the Altar to the Timeline: 10 Nigerian celebrity marriages that fell apart in public" class="wp-image-795458" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12.png 880w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12-800x490.png 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12-120x74.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12-90x55.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12-320x196.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12-560x343.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12-240x147.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12-180x110.png 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-12-640x392.png 640w" sizes="(max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px" ></figure>

<h4 id="2baba-annie-macaulay-idibia-married-2012-%c2%b7-separated-2025" class="wp-block-heading">2Baba &amp; Annie Macaulay-Idibia (<em>Married 2012 · Separated 2025</em>)</h4>

<p>For 25 years, Innocent Idibia and Annie Macaulay were Nigeria&#8217;s most enduring love story — a narrative the country had invested in deeply, partly because it asked so much of Annie, and she had given it anyway. She stayed through children born to other women, through public humiliations, through years of whispered doubts. Fans held on with her.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="258" height="196" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-13.png" alt="From the Altar to the Timeline: 10 Nigerian celebrity marriages that fell apart in public" class="wp-image-795459" style="width:470px;height:auto" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-13.png 258w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-13-120x90.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-13-90x68.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-13-240x182.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-13-180x136.png 180w" sizes="(max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px" ></figure>

<p>On January 26, 2025, it ended in the most chaotic war possible. 2Baba posted that they had separated and he had filed for divorce. A later post claimed he&#8217;d been hacked but the legendary musician then posted a video saying, emphatically: &#8220;Nobody hacked my account. I said what I said<a href="https://guardian.ng/life/music/why-i-left-annie-2baba/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">.</a>&#8221; </p>

<p>Annie had actually foreshadowed everything three years earlier on Netflix&#8217;s <em>Young, Famous &amp; African</em>, where she broke down on camera: &#8220;<em>My first child is his fifth, and I met him before everybody.</em>&#8221; By the time the announcement came, fans who had watched that episode were unsurprised — but still gutted. 2Baba has since moved on, proposing and marrying Edo lawmaker Natasha Osawaru.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="640" height="424" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-14.png" alt="From the Altar to the Timeline: 10 Nigerian celebrity marriages that fell apart in public" class="wp-image-795460" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-14.png 640w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-14-120x80.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-14-90x60.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-14-320x212.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-14-560x371.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-14-240x159.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-14-180x119.png 180w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" ></figure>

<h4 id="toke-makinwa-maje-ayida-married-january-2014-%c2%b7-divorced-october-2017" class="wp-block-heading">Toke Makinwa &amp; Maje Ayida (<em>Married January 2014 · Divorced October 2017</em>)</h4>

<p>Toke had loved Maje for eight years before they finally made it official at the Lagos registry in January 2014 — privately, because he had apparently cancelled their wedding date three times. Toke later confirmed in her book that the fear of being abandoned at the altar quietly shaped everything about how she entered that marriage.</p>

<p>She was right to be afraid. The marriage barely lasted 18 months of cohabitation before Toke discovered that Maje had maintained a relationship with his ex, Anita Solomon and they had a child together. A Lagos High Court dissolved the marriage in October 2017, finding Maje guilty of adultery and emotional cruelty.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="577" height="389" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Toke-Makina-and-Maje-Ayida.png" alt="From the Altar to the Timeline: 10 Nigerian celebrity marriages that fell apart in public" class="wp-image-795461" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Toke-Makina-and-Maje-Ayida.png 577w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Toke-Makina-and-Maje-Ayida-120x81.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Toke-Makina-and-Maje-Ayida-90x61.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Toke-Makina-and-Maje-Ayida-320x216.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Toke-Makina-and-Maje-Ayida-560x378.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Toke-Makina-and-Maje-Ayida-240x162.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Toke-Makina-and-Maje-Ayida-180x121.png 180w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 577px) 100vw, 577px" ></figure>
</div>

<p>What made this one immortal was Toke&#8217;s memoir, <em>On Becoming</em>, published in November 2016: a precise, devastating account of the betrayals, the STD allegations, and the cost of staying. Maje sued for defamation and was awarded damages. It was the divorce that introduced Nigerian celebrity culture to the concept of airing your ex in a bestseller.</p>

<h4 id="tonto-dikeh-olakunle-churchill-married-august-2015-%c2%b7-divorced-july-2017" class="wp-block-heading">Tonto Dikeh &amp; Olakunle Churchill <em>Married August 2015 · Divorced July 2017</em></h4>

<p>Few celebrity splits have matched the sheer sustained chaos of this one. Tonto and Churchill married lavishly in Rivers State, had a son within the year, and were at war almost immediately after. What followed was a full-scale social media battle waged across Instagram posts, sit-down interviews, and press statements. Allegations of domestic violence, infidelity, financial irresponsibility, and neglect flying in both directions, with neither party willing to stand down.</p>

<p>Nigerians picked sides with the energy usually reserved for election season. The split lasted two years officially, but the post-divorce saga — custody disputes, new relationships, periodic online flare-ups — has arguably run longer than the marriage itself. The Tonto-Churchill divorce is effectively its own genre within Nigerian entertainment news.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="735" height="450" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tiwa-Savage-and-Teebillz.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-795463" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tiwa-Savage-and-Teebillz.jpg 735w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tiwa-Savage-and-Teebillz-120x73.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tiwa-Savage-and-Teebillz-90x55.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tiwa-Savage-and-Teebillz-320x196.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tiwa-Savage-and-Teebillz-560x343.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tiwa-Savage-and-Teebillz-240x147.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tiwa-Savage-and-Teebillz-180x110.jpg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tiwa-Savage-and-Teebillz-640x392.jpg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px" ></figure>

<h4 id="tiwa-savage-teebillz-married-2013-%c2%b7-separated-2016" class="wp-block-heading">Tiwa Savage &amp; TeeBillz <em>Married 2013 · Separated 2016</em></h4>

<p>Nigeria&#8217;s biggest female music star and her manager-husband looked like the blueprint for a power couple. They had their son Jamil. They had twin ceremonies in Lagos and Dubai. They had the aesthetics. Then, in April 2016, TeeBillz posted a series of distressed, suicidal messages online that shocked the country and announced, without any ambiguity, that the marriage was in complete collapse.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-nigerian-entertainment-today wp-block-embed-nigerian-entertainment-today"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<span class="mRyhIa5fObAF"><blockquote class="wp-embedded-content" data-secret="YP38auToRZ"><a href="https://thenet.ng/weddingoff-photos-from-tiwa-savage-and-tee-billz-dubai-wedding/">#WeddingOff: Photos from Tiwa Savage and Tee Billz Dubai wedding</a></blockquote><iframe loading="lazy" class="wp-embedded-content" sandbox="allow-scripts" security="restricted" title="&#8220;#WeddingOff: Photos from Tiwa Savage and Tee Billz Dubai wedding&#8221; &#8212; Nigerian Entertainment Today" src="https://thenet.ng/weddingoff-photos-from-tiwa-savage-and-tee-billz-dubai-wedding/embed/#?secret=3EmFiXjeV1#?secret=YP38auToRZ" data-secret="YP38auToRZ" width="600" height="338" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></span>
</div></figure>

<p></p>

<p>His posts accused Tiwa of infidelity and abandonment. Tiwa&#8217;s account told a different story entirely: debt, alleged drug issues on his part, and a slow unravelling she had been managing privately for years — all while navigating postpartum depression after their son&#8217;s birth. </p>

<p>The public nature of TeeBillz&#8217;s breakdown made this the most alarming celebrity split Nigeria had seen to that point, and it opened conversations about mental health and the private weight behind public personas that the industry had barely acknowledged before.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1080" height="1248" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15.png" alt="" class="wp-image-795464" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15.png 1080w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15-800x924.png 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15-120x139.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15-90x104.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15-320x370.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15-560x647.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15-240x277.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15-180x208.png 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-15-640x740.png 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" ></figure>

<p></p>

<h4 id="funke-akindele-jjc-skillz-married-may-2016-%c2%b7-separated-june-2022" class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Funke Akindele &amp; JJC Skillz</strong> <em>Married May 2016 · Separated June 2022</em></h4>

<p>They built everything together — the <a href="https://thenet.ng/why-funke-akindele-and-jjc-settled-for-secret-london-wedding/">marriage</a>, the creative brand, the <em>Jenifa&#8217;s Diary</em> empire. Funke Akindele and Abdulrasheed Bello seemed to prove that being life partners and business partners could coexist. Then in June 2022, JJC announced on Instagram that they had separated, that he had moved out three months earlier at Funke&#8217;s request, and that efforts to reconcile had gone nowhere.</p>

<p>The timing was striking: the announcement came months before Funke was named the PDP&#8217;s deputy governorship candidate in Lagos, adding a political dimension to an already surprising story. His son Benito&#8217;s earlier public allegations of infidelity had already introduced a messy subplot. Funke eventually broke her silence, saying their visions for the marriage had simply diverged. It was one of the most significant splits of 2022 — a year that took several marriages with it.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="638" height="382" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Paul-Okoye-Rudeboy-Anita-Isama-.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-795465" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Paul-Okoye-Rudeboy-Anita-Isama-.jpg 638w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Paul-Okoye-Rudeboy-Anita-Isama--120x72.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Paul-Okoye-Rudeboy-Anita-Isama--90x54.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Paul-Okoye-Rudeboy-Anita-Isama--320x192.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Paul-Okoye-Rudeboy-Anita-Isama--560x335.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Paul-Okoye-Rudeboy-Anita-Isama--240x144.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Paul-Okoye-Rudeboy-Anita-Isama--180x108.jpg 180w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px" ></figure>

<h4 id="paul-okoye-rudeboy-anita-isama-married-march-2014-%c2%b7-divorced-december-2022" class="wp-block-heading">Paul Okoye (Rudeboy) &amp; Anita Isama <em>Married March 2014 · Divorced December 2022</em></h4>

<p>Ten years of dating before the wedding. Three children together. And an eventual divorce petition so specific in its allegations with exposed hotel addresses, named individuals, a claim involving their housekeeper, that it felt like a Nollywood movie.</p>

<p>Anita&#8217;s allegations against the P-Square star included infidelity, fraud, and absent parenting, and she came to court with documentation. An Abuja High Court formally dissolved the marriage in December 2022. The case stood out not just for the scale of its claims but for the precision of the evidence. It also arrived in the same year that seemed determined to dismantle Nigerian entertainment&#8217;s married couples one by one.</p>

<h4 id="basketmouth-elsie-okpocha-married-2010-%c2%b7-separated-december-2022" class="wp-block-heading">Basketmouth &amp; Elsie Okpocha <em>Married 2010 · Separated December 2022</em></h4>

<p>If any split in recent memory illustrated that a quiet ending can still be a devastating one, it was this. Bright Okpocha had built his entire public persona around warmth and family. For 12 years, his marriage to Elsie was one of the most admired in Nigerian entertainment — visible, affectionate, and seemingly unshakeable. Elsie had publicly called him &#8220;a gift from God.&#8221;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1080" height="1349" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-795466" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha.jpg 1080w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha-800x999.jpg 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha-120x150.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha-90x112.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha-320x400.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha-560x699.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha-240x300.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha-180x225.jpg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Basketmouth-Elsie-Okpocha-640x799.jpg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" ></figure>

<p>His December 2022 announcement was measured, almost understated. They had made &#8220;the difficult decision to end the marriage.&#8221; He asked for privacy for the sake of their three children. No accusations. No leaks. Just a statement, and then silence. In a year of loud divorces, the quietness of this one somehow hit harder.</p>

<h4 id="nedu-wazobia-uzoamaka-ohiri-married-2013-%c2%b7-separated-2018" class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Nedu Wazobia &amp; Uzoamaka Ohiri</strong> <em>Married 2013 · Separated 2018</em></h4>

<p>Radio presenter and comedian Nedu became the inadvertent face of Nigeria&#8217;s paternity fraud reckoning. His marriage had produced three children and, by all external appearances, a stable home. When it ended in 2018, what emerged years later — in a 2021 interview with Daddy Freeze — was something the country was not prepared for: a DNA test had confirmed that one of the children he had raised as his own was not biologically his.</p>

<p>The revelation detonated across social media and sparked a national conversation about paternity fraud — its prevalence, its emotional cost, and how many men were living through versions of the same thing in silence. Countless people came forward with similar stories. For a period, Nedu&#8217;s name became almost synonymous with the subject in public discourse. His willingness to speak about it openly made space for a conversation that Nigerian society had mostly refused to have.</p>

<p><strong>AY Makun &amp; Mabel Makun</strong> <em>Together ~20 years · Separated April 2024</em></p>

<p>The longevity alone felt like a statement. AY and Mabel had been together for nearly two decades, celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary in November 2023, and welcomed a second child in 2022 after a 13-year gap. They had seemingly outlasted every wave of celebrity divorce drama the industry had produced.</p>

<p>In April 2024, AY announced on Instagram that he could &#8220;no longer continue addressing deeply personal family matters in the public domain&#8221; — phrasing careful enough to confirm everything while technically saying nothing. The marriage was over. </p>

<p>Reports linked the split to infidelity, though no specifics were ever publicly confirmed. The timing — less than six months after their anniversary — made this one of the more jarring endings of the decade, a reminder that what we see on Instagram anniversaries is rarely the complete picture.</p>

<p></p>

<p></p>

<p><strong>Frank Edoho &amp; Sandra Onyenucheya</strong> <em>Separated ~2023 · Publicly disclosed June 2025 · Chike allegations May 2026</em></p>

<p>Frank had already been through one high-profile marriage — to broadcaster Katherine Obiang, which ended in 2010 after seven years. When he separated from Sandra around 2023, he processed it privately. He disclosed it publicly only in June 2025, and even then with characteristic restraint: &#8220;I am well. Focused. At peace.&#8221;</p>

<p>The internet found it eventually. In May 2026, blogger Cutie Juls alleged that singer Chike had been intimately involved with Sandra during the marriage — repeatedly and over a sustained period. A purported leaked audio of Sandra confiding in Chike about her marital troubles circulated widely. Chike locked his Instagram comments. Sandra broke her silence to deny the affair and allege years of abuse and neglect. Frank posted about dignity and quiet and moving forward — and let the timeline do the rest.</p>

<p>&#8220;I have lived through this privately for quite some time now — almost two years — and have since made peace with it emotionally,&#8221; he said, responding to the public reaction. &#8220;Moving forward quietly is the most dignified path one can take.&#8221;</p>

<p>Asake released his fourth studio album on May 1. <a href="https://x.com/asakemusik/status/2050507129467908240?s=20"><em>M$NEY</em> is Asake’s fourth studio album</a>, following <em>Mr Money with the Vibe</em> in 2022, which was his debut album, then <em>Work of Art</em> in 2023, and <em>Lungu Boy</em> in 2024. </p>

<p>M$NEY, released through his own imprint Giran Republic in partnership with EMPIRE, after he left YBNL. Although he didn’t release an album in 2025, which would have kept up with his consistency of releasing albums every year, the album didn’t come out in 2025. </p>

<p>It seems it was a case of “the patient dog eats the fattest bone,” as he has now blessed us with a good album. His album comes three months after he just released a joint project, <em>Real</em>, with Wizkid, which is a four-track project that features tracks like “<em>Jogodo</em>,” “<em>Turbulence</em>,” “<em>Iskolodo</em>,” and “<em>Alaye</em>.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="820" height="1024" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f.jpg" alt="Asake" class="wp-image-795294" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f.jpg 820w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f-800x999.jpg 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f-120x150.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f-90x112.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f-320x400.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f-560x699.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f-240x300.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f-180x225.jpg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHT1VxDWwAAx79f-640x799.jpg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px" ></figure>

<p>The album features collaborations with Kabza De Small, Tiakola, and DJ Snake. Interestingly, there is no Nigerian featured on the album. The project includes 13 tracks, such as “Why Love,” “Badman Gangsta,” and “Worship,” which were released earlier as part of the album rollout before the new songs on the album came out.</p>

<p>When Asake came onto the scene with “Omo Ope” featuring Olamide, most people didn’t know who he was or had barely known of him, but fast forward from 2022 till now in 2026, and he’s showing that he’s one of the best in the music game.</p>

<p>Before we go ten toes into the album, after it was released, Asake’s <em>M$NEY</em> album listening party was held at a private hangar in Lagos, which was a unique location to host a listening party for an album, unlike using halls, clubs or other places. which had Zlatan Ibile, Poco Lee, BNXN, Shoday, Rahman Jago, Cheque, TML Vibez, Toki, Skiibii, and several other stars show up for Asake’s <em>M$NEY</em> album listening party in Lagos.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="762" height="1016" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHV7yvKW4AADKB0.jpg" alt="Asake" class="wp-image-795296" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHV7yvKW4AADKB0.jpg 762w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHV7yvKW4AADKB0-120x160.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHV7yvKW4AADKB0-90x120.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHV7yvKW4AADKB0-320x427.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHV7yvKW4AADKB0-560x747.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHV7yvKW4AADKB0-240x320.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHV7yvKW4AADKB0-180x240.jpg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHV7yvKW4AADKB0-640x854.jpg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px" ></figure>

<p>Now let’s focus on the album, <em>M$NEY</em>. It was expected to drop in 2025 but didn’t, as it was carefully developed over time with patience, consistency, and a clear purpose. From late-night studio sessions to quiet behind-the-scenes work, the project slowly grew into a complete body of work. </p>

<p>This process shows the importance of trusting timing, staying focused even when progress isn’t visible, and not rushing quality. It also highlights the value of having a strong vision and thinking long-term. </p>

<p><em>M$NEY</em> is more than just music; it represents growth, sacrifice, and the idea that real wealth is not only about money. The album tells a simple story about gratitude, success, and what it truly means to be rich in life, while mixing street motivation, soft luxury flexing, and uplifting energy. With its catchy hooks and strong instrumentals, the project delivers both motivation and enjoyable listening.</p>

<p>M$NEY finds Asake threading together the threads of his artistic identity, the street-savvy lyricism, the Fuji-inflected rhythms, the melodic Yoruba storytelling, while pushing into new sonic territory. M$NEY is a reflection of my spiritual and creative journey. The album is confident without being complacent, and emotional without being soft.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1080" height="1080" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL.jpg" alt="Asake" class="wp-image-795297" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL.jpg 1080w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-800x800.jpg 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-80x80.jpg 80w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-120x120.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-90x90.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-320x320.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-560x560.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-160x160.jpg 160w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-240x240.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-180x180.jpg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HHUrpgPXcAA9rsL-640x640.jpg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" ></figure>

<p>While listening to the album during my first listen, this new Asake “M$ney” album made me feel like I had made it, making me feel like a big man with so much gratitude. I fell in love with the album and connected with it both musically and spiritually. </p>

<p>I have listened to it almost a hundred times since it dropped, showing you it has replay value and literally no skips. Anyone who has paid attention to Asake’s musical journey can see that this album was expected. </p>

<p>Over time, his sound has gradually shifted, becoming less intense and more easygoing. This project reflects that change, leaning into a calm, confident style. It shows that he has moved past the hustle stage and is now operating from a place of success as an international Afrobeats artist.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="749" height="643" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/img_20260502_2209497261526867162221328.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-795298" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/img_20260502_2209497261526867162221328.jpg 749w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/img_20260502_2209497261526867162221328-120x103.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/img_20260502_2209497261526867162221328-90x77.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/img_20260502_2209497261526867162221328-320x275.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/img_20260502_2209497261526867162221328-560x481.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/img_20260502_2209497261526867162221328-240x206.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/img_20260502_2209497261526867162221328-180x155.jpg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/img_20260502_2209497261526867162221328-640x549.jpg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px" ></figure>

<p>The album opens with the track “Intro,” a live choral performance in a South African language, which sets the tone for the musical journey through the project that you are about to engage in.</p>

<p>The second track of the album “Worship,” had already gained momentum since last year, even before the album dropped. Asake first performed WORSHIP with DJ Snake at a Red Bull Symphonic show at Brooklyn&#8217;s King Theatre in November 2025. It is a calm and uplifting song that mixes Afrobeats with soft electronic sounds. Asake sings about being thankful and having faith</p>

<p>Gratitude is one of the standout tracks from the album. This song shows gratitude to God for his doings in your life while talking deeply about life. It’s what I can call the Luxury “Afro Adura” track. You just can’t help but sing along or get moved. It is what transforms a celebration of money and success into something that feels, at its core, like a track dedicated to God, to his fans, and to the version of himself that kept going when it would have been easier to stop</p>

<p>&#8220;Rora,&#8221; a slow and calm song that you can play when you’re in a good mood and just thinking about the nice things in life. He sings in a simple and confident way that matches the peaceful vibe. It’s the kind of song you play when you feel happy, grateful, and just want to enjoy the moment.</p>

<p>Amen is a feel-good track that instantly connects with your spirit. Although, many fans are displeased about the line, &#8220;Presido sope emi lokan, e dey win election, power in the tongue Ma lo gor, I wish for all that I want&#8221; which he was referencing Nigerian President Bola Tinubu&#8217;s famous &#8220;Emi Lokan&#8221; (&#8220;My Turn&#8221;) declaration and his 2023 electoral victory.</p>

<p>“Wa” by Asake is a smooth and enjoyable song that focuses more on vibe and feeling than deep lyrics. It’s a love song to profess love. One thing that made this track even sweeter is the way Asake came in before the beat even started. It shows that Mr Money doesn’t waste time at all. The transition from the previous track into this one also flows really smoothly, making the whole listening experience feel natural and well-connected. From ‘Amen’ To ‘Wa&#8217; </p>

<p><br>“MCBH” (meaning “Money Can’t Buy Happiness”) by Asake is a reflective and celebratory song where he talks about his success and how God has blessed him. He sings about enjoying his wealth, wisdom, and spiritual growth, but also reminds listeners that even with money, true happiness comes from life, peace, and gratitude. </p>

<p>“Why Love” by Asake is a smooth and emotional Afrobeats song that marks an important moment in his career, as it was his first release under his own label, Giran Republic, and was <a href="https://thenet.ng/asake-ushers-in-a-new-era-with-why-love/">dropped earlier in February 2025</a> ahead of the album rollout. Produced by Magicsticks, the track blends amapiano-inspired drums with a softer, more romantic sound that makes it feel calm, catchy, and easy to listen to. In the song, Asake sings in a mix of Yoruba and English about love, admiration, and emotional connection, while also showing confidence in himself as someone who deserves love. His laid-back vocal delivery makes the message feel natural and heartfelt, giving listeners a different, more emotional side of him compared to his usual energetic street anthems.</p>

<p>“Forgiveness” by Asake is a more emotional and reflective song where he sounds calm and thoughtful. The song which is currently topping the charts focuses on asking for forgiveness, peace, and understanding, showing a softer side of himself. The beat is gentle and laid-back, allowing his voice and message to stand out. It’s the kind of song that feels personal and meaningful, especially when you listen closely to the lyrics about growth and second chances. </p>

<p>Oba” by Asake is a calm but powerful song that’s easy to enjoy. The beat is smooth, with soft piano and deep bass that makes it feel relaxing. His flow is very natural; he’s not forcing anything, and that makes the song sound effortless. The beat, flow, and lyrics on “OBA” are so therapeutic as Asake no dey stress too much; he&#8217;s got the vibe.</p>

<p>“Badman Gangsta” by Asake and Tiakola is a smooth and easy-to-enjoy song that mixes Afrobeats with an international feel. Asake comes in with his relaxed, effortless flow, talking about success, confidence, and enjoying life without stress, while Tiakola adds a melodic French touch that makes the song feel fresh and global. </p>

<p>On Asambe, Asake teams up with Kabza De Small and leans more into an Amapiano sound. The beat is nice and has that familiar log-drum vibe, but it feels like Asake is not fully in his element. Compared to the earlier songs on the project, Asambe is not as catchy or sweet. It’s not a bad song, but it’s also not one of the standout tracks on the project though.</p>

<p><br>Skilful, the last track on the project, it has a calmer, more relaxed feel. It sounds okay, but it doesn’t really leave a strong impression. It’s not as interesting or enjoyable as most of the other songs, which might explain why it’s one of the least-streamed tracks. </p>

<p>Overall, both songs are decent, but they don’t stand out compared to the better tracks on the album.</p>

<p>M$ney is a very good and high-quality album from Asake. I would rank it as one of his best projects, alongside his second album, Work of Art. </p>

<p>Across his four albums, Asake has shown different sides of himself. His debut album, Mr. Money With The Vibe (2022), was full of energetic, party-style songs like “Sungba,” “Organise,” and “Terminator.” It was all about vibes and catchy sounds.</p>

<p>With Work of Art, he focused more on lyrics and showed his strength as a creative and expressive artist. In Lungu Boy (2024), he showed his global reach by working with international artists from the US, UK, and Latin music scenes.</p>

<p>On M$ney, Asake sounds more mature and grateful. The album leans into a “big boy” lifestyle and a more refined sound. Even the title suggests success and importance, and the music lives up to the hype and anticipation.</p>

<p>Overall, it’s a strong album that shows his growth and consistency.</p>

<p><strong>Rating: 8.5/10</strong></p>

<p>Adekunle Gold is having his season, and he is not slowing down anytime soon.</p>

<p>The award winning singer and songwriter dropped Fuji Xtra on May 8, 2026, the deluxe expansion of his critically acclaimed 2025 album Fuji, bringing the tracklist from 15 to 20 tracks with new collaborations featuring Olamide, his wife Simi and rising star TML Vibez. The release has sent fans into a frenzy, with the project already generating significant buzz across streaming platforms and social media since its arrival.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1700" height="1133" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-1700x1133.jpg" alt="Adekunle Gold" class="wp-image-795452" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-1700x1133.jpg 1700w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-1160x773.jpg 1160w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-800x533.jpg 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-120x80.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-90x60.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-320x213.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-560x373.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-1920x1280.jpg 1920w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-240x160.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-640x427.jpg 640w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-1120x746.jpg 1120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1-1600x1066.jpg 1600w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/1-1.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1700px) 100vw, 1700px" ></figure>

<p>Fuji marked a bold creative pivot for the AG Baby crooner, drawing on the traditional Fuji sounds that shaped Nigerian music decades before Afrobeats became a global phenomenon. The expanded deluxe version, which he has dubbed Electro Fuji, blends those traditional rhythmic roots with contemporary Afrobeats energy in a way that has earned him widespread critical praise and renewed admiration from a fanbase that has followed his journey from Sade to Party No Dey Stop and now to this. But the music is not the only major news coming out of the AG Baby camp this season.</p>

<p>In the same period, <a href="https://thenet.ng/the-macallan-unveils-adekunle-gold-as-brand-ambassador/">Adekunle Gold has been unveiled as Brand Ambassador for The Macallan</a>, the world renowned single malt Scotch whisky founded in 1824 and widely regarded as one of the most prestigious spirits brands in the world. The formal announcement was made on May 7, 2026, but those who attended The Macallan Timeless Collection launch in Lagos on April 17 at The Anthonia by Civic Centre, Ikoyi, had already witnessed the partnership reveal in real time, as AG performed to a room full of the city&#8217;s most distinguished names from entertainment, business and culture.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="855" height="586" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2.png" alt="Adekunle Gold" class="wp-image-795453" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2.png 855w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2-800x548.png 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2-120x82.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2-90x62.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2-320x219.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2-560x384.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2-240x164.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2-180x123.png 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2-640x439.png 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px" ></figure>

<p>The partnership did not happen overnight. It has been quietly building over the past year through a series of cultural moments that include an intimate Coco Money dinner party at Kaly Restaurant in Victoria Island in April 2025, the seamless integration of The Macallan into his Coco Money music video and his Fuji album release celebrations in October. By the time the Lagos launch came around, the relationship between the artist and the brand felt less like a deal and more like a natural extension of who Adekunle Gold is.</p>

<p><em>Speaking on the partnership, the singer said: &#8220;This partnership is rooted in shared values, craftsmanship, excellence, legacy, class and the beauty of taking time to create something meaningful. Everything I create, whether through music, culture or storytelling, is built with intention, and that is what makes this relationship with The Macallan feel both natural and deeply authentic. We both understand that timeless work is never rushed, and I am excited about what we will build together.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>With a deluxe album already turning heads and a major brand partnership now official, Adekunle Gold is clearly operating at a different level in 2026. For an artist who has always played the long game, this season feels like the moment everything he has been building is coming together at once.</p>

<p>Born Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke in Port Harcourt, the actor became a household name through films that connected deeply with audiences in Nigeria and across Africa. Whether he was playing a romantic lead, a struggling young man, or a socially conscious activist, Ekubo brought warmth, confidence, and emotional depth to the screen.</p>

<p>As tributes continue to pour in from fans and colleagues, here’s a look back at 10 films that helped define his remarkable legacy in Nollywood.</p>

<h2 id="1-weekend-getaway-2012" class="wp-block-heading">1. Weekend Getaway (2012)</h2>

<p>One of Ekubo’s earliest breakout roles came in <em>Weekend Getaway</em>, where he played the charming Andre Dikeh. The romantic drama followed a luxurious vacation filled with friendship, romance, and betrayal. </p>

<p>Veteran filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen has shared an emotional reflection on his early connection with <a href="https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/05/breaking-nollywood-actor-alexx-ekubo-dies-at-40/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">late actor Alexx Ekubo</a>, revealing that he played a key role in giving the young star his very first movie opportunity.</p>

<p>Imasuen recalled meeting Ekubo in Surulere, Lagos, where they lived as neighbours at the time. According to him, Ekubo was already deeply fascinated by filmmaking as a student and would regularly show up at film locations every Saturday, quietly observing and learning the craft long before he officially stepped into the industry.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1290" height="984" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-795416" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo.jpeg 1290w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-1160x885.jpeg 1160w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-800x610.jpeg 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-120x92.jpeg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-90x68.jpeg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-320x244.jpeg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-560x427.jpeg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-240x183.jpeg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-180x136.jpeg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-640x488.jpeg 640w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Alex-Ekubo-1120x854.jpeg 1120w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1290px) 100vw, 1290px" ></figure>

<p>Imasuen said Ekubo’s consistency and passion eventually earned him his first acting role, marking the beginning of what would become a successful career in Nollywood. He described the late actor as focused, eager, and naturally drawn to the screen even at a young age.</p>

<p>The filmmaker’s tribute comes amid widespread mourning in the Nigerian entertainment industry following the announcement of <a href="https://thenet.ng/nollywood-stars-break-down-over-alexx-ekubos-death/">Ekubo’s death on Monday, May 11, 2026</a>, after a battle with kidney cancer. He was 40 years old.</p>

<p>News of his passing was first reported on Tuesday, sparking an outpouring of grief from colleagues and fans across social media platforms such as Instagram and X. Many continue to refer to him by his affectionate nickname, “Ikuku,” which has since become a rallying cry for remembrance and sorrow online.</p>

<p>Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, the actor had been noticeably absent from social media since December 30, 2024, a silence that had already raised concern among fans and fueled speculation about his health in the months leading up to his death.</p>

<p>The Nigerian entertainment industry has been in mourning since news broke of the death of actor <a href="https://thenet.ng/?s=alexx+ekubo">Alexx Ekubo</a> on Tuesday. </p>

<p>Colleagues and fans have flooded social media platforms like Instagram and X with tributes for the man many simply called &#8220;Ikuku&#8221; — a term of endearment that, in the last 24 hours, has become a rallying cry for grief.</p>

<p>Ekubo, born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, died on Monday, May 11, 2026, after a battle with kidney cancer. He was 40.</p>

<p>Actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli, who described Alexx Ekubo as her closest friend, did not hold back. &#8220;<em>I&#8217;m so upset! Who will help me fight death? This is too much! How are we supposed to move on? How do we say goodbye? I&#8217;m devastated. My bestie! Why? We had a plan! Where do I start from?</em>&#8221; she wrote on Instagram.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="684" height="286" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4.png" alt="" class="wp-image-795403" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4.png 684w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4-120x50.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4-90x38.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4-320x134.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4-560x234.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4-240x100.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4-180x75.png 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-4-640x268.png 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px" ></figure>

<p></p>

<p>Mo Abudu, CEO of EbonyLife Group, recalled how Alexx Ekubo used to call her &#8220;Mum&#8221; — and the message she never followed up on. &#8220;<em>We hadn&#8217;t spoken in a while. I remember you travelled last year and replied when you got back. I sent another message after that, and when you didn&#8217;t respond, I didn&#8217;t follow up. I never imagined there wouldn&#8217;t be another chance.</em>&#8221; </p>

<p>She added: <em>&#8220;I checked on him, and he kept saying he was fine. It&#8217;s so sad. Are you telling me I will never see Ikuku again? My spirit is broken.&#8221;</em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="944" height="980" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5.png" alt=" Nollywood Stars break down over Alexx Ekubo's death" class="wp-image-795405" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5.png 944w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5-800x831.png 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5-120x125.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5-90x93.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5-320x332.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5-560x581.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5-240x249.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5-180x187.png 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-5-640x664.png 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 944px) 100vw, 944px" ></figure>

<p>Funke Akindele, in an Instagram story, wrote what many in the industry felt: <em>&#8220;I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. Ore mi — like you fondly called me — I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together.&#8221;</em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="802" height="1158" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6.png" alt="&quot;Rest in Peace, Ikuku&quot; — Nollywood Stars break down over Alexx Ekubo's death" class="wp-image-795406" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6.png 802w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6-800x1155.png 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6-120x173.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6-90x130.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6-320x462.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6-560x809.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6-240x347.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6-180x260.png 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-6-640x924.png 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px" ></figure>

<p></p>

<p>Actor Kunle Remi, who said he had spoken about Ekubo just the day before news of his passing broke, wrote: &#8220;<em>Ikuku The Breeze. This really hurts, bro. A good man. God is taking care of you. Bask in His peace.&#8221;</em></p>

<p></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="932" height="878" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7.png" alt="" class="wp-image-795407" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7.png 932w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7-800x754.png 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7-120x113.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7-90x85.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7-320x301.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7-560x528.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7-240x226.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7-180x170.png 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-7-640x603.png 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 932px) 100vw, 932px" ></figure>

<p>Ruth Kadiri admitted she had been dreading this day. <em>&#8220;I made sure to check up on him regularly. I feared for this day, yet it finally came. Rest well, Alexxx.&#8221;</em></p>

<p></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="972" height="282" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8.png" alt="" class="wp-image-795408" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8.png 972w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8-800x232.png 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8-120x35.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8-90x26.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8-320x93.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8-560x162.png 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8-240x70.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8-180x52.png 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/image-8-640x186.png 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 972px) 100vw, 972px" ></figure>

<p>Colleague Godwin Nnadiekwe, who confirmed the death earlier, revealed the detail that broke many people: Ekubo had already prepared his will. &#8220;<em>To think you already prepared your Will — it&#8217;s heartbroken, I can&#8217;t quite describe. Nollywood has lost a rare soul.&#8221;</em></p>

<p></p>

<p>Veteran filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen, who gave Ekubo his very first movie role after meeting him as a neighbour in Surulere — where the young actor would show up at film locations every Saturday while still a student — called the loss &#8220;devastating and unbelievable.&#8221;</p>

<p>Bolanle Ninalowo, posting from the United States, kept it brief and raw: &#8220;Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.&#8221;</p>

<p>Ini Dima-Okojie, Bucci Franklin, Dayo Amusa, Johnny Drille, Rita Dominic and Bimbo Ademoye were among many others who paid tribute across platforms throughout the day.</p>

<p>Ekubo had been largely absent from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/alexxekubo/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">social media</a> since December 30, 2024, a silence that had troubled fans for months. A viral video that surfaced before his death, showing him visibly thinner and subdued while interacting with a group of children, intensified the concern. He leaves behind a decade-long body of work, a generation of fans, and an industry that, by all accounts, loved him quietly and worries it did not say so loudly enough.</p>

<p>His family is yet to issue an official statement.</p>

<p>Personally, I think Uzor Arukwe’s AMVCA win for Best Lead Actor was one of the biggest surprises of the night at the <a href="https://thenet.ng/amvca-12-so-good-nigerias-music-industry-take-notes/">12th edition of the AMVCA,</a> which happened at Eko Hotel on Saturday, May 9.</p>

<p>Uzor Arukwe won Best Lead Actor at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers&#8217; Choice Awards (AMVCA) for his commanding and powerful performance as Akinbode in the fantasy epic Colours of Fire. His role in the film, directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, was widely praised for its emotional depth and versatility. While receiving the award, Uzor Arukwe expressed surprise and humility, saying, “I never saw this coming… my category was crazy,” and acknowledged how competitive the category had been.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1179" height="1453" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r.jpg" alt="Uzor Arukwe" class="wp-image-795377" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r.jpg 1179w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-1160x1430.jpg 1160w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-800x986.jpg 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-120x148.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-90x111.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-320x394.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-560x690.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-240x296.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-180x222.jpg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-640x789.jpg 640w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57bK6XcAETX5r-1120x1380.jpg 1120w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1179px) 100vw, 1179px" ></figure>

<p>Before the award was announced, many people already believed actors like Lateef Adedimeji or William Benson were going to win the award that night. That night was filled with predictions, and most conversations focused on those two actors because of how powerful their performances were throughout the year.</p>

<p>Lateef Adedimeji had a lot of support because of his role in <em>Lisabi: A Legend Is Born</em>. He played the legendary warrior Lisabi with so much passion, strength, and emotion that many people felt the award already belonged to him. His role was intense, commanding, and emotional, which made him one of the strongest favorites in the category.</p>

<p>William Benson was also heavily praised for his role in <em>To Kill A Monkey</em>. His performance was emotional, raw, and very realistic, and many viewers connected deeply with his character. A lot of people believed he had a strong chance of winning too over his performance in the movie.</p>

<p>Then in the category there was Wale Ojo in <em>3 Cold Dishes</em>, Femi Branch in <em>Red Circle</em>, Kanayo O. Kanayo in <em>Grandpa Must Obey</em>, Mike Ezuruonye in <em>Oversabi Aunty</em>, and Khumbuza Meyiwa in <em>Bet I Love You</em>. Every actor in the category gave strong performances, which made the competition very tough.</p>

<p>That is why Uzor Arukwe winning for <em>Colours of Fire</em> shocked so many people.</p>

<p>Honestly, when his name was announced, it felt like reality suddenly hit everybody. Many people who were expecting Lateef Adedimeji or William Benson to win were completely surprised. Even Uzor himself looked shocked.</p>

<p>One of the videos that later went viral online showed Uzor Arukwe pressing his phone while the nominees were being announced, almost like he did not expect to win at all. Then suddenly, his name was called, and the look on his face was priceless. You could see the confusion, shock, and happiness all at once as he was crowded with well-wishers.</p>

<p>In <em>Colours of Fire</em>, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DYIf4NLszO_/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Uzor Arukwe</a> gave one of the most natural performances of the year. What made his acting stand out was how real it felt. He did not try too hard or overact. Instead, he played the character with emotion, calmness, pain, strength, and vulnerability in a very believable way. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1638" height="2048" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x.jpg" alt="Colours of Fire" class="wp-image-795378" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x.jpg 1638w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-1160x1450.jpg 1160w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-800x1000.jpg 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-120x150.jpg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-90x113.jpg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-320x400.jpg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-560x700.jpg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-240x300.jpg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-180x225.jpg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-640x800.jpg 640w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-1120x1400.jpg 1120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HH57GUrWYAEAv2x-1600x2000.jpg 1600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1638px) 100vw, 1638px" ></figure>

<p>He also expressed gratitude for his role in the movie after he received the award in an interview, saying, “I’m grateful to God. Although <em>Colours of Fire</em> didn’t do so well in the cinemas, we know we made a great film.”</p>

<p>Some actors rely on loud dramatic scenes to impress viewers, but Uzor’s performance was more controlled and natural. He made people feel connected to his character without forcing emotions, and I think that is what made the role special. The truth is, Uzor Arukwe has been a very good actor for years now.</p>

<p>Whether he is playing a funny character, a serious role, a supportive friend, or a lead actor, he always gives his best. He has quietly built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s most consistent actors, even if he does not always get the loudest praise.</p>

<p>He was also on everyone’s lips in 2025 for his role in the movie Love in Every Word, where he delivered such a memorable performance that many fans nicknamed him “Mr Odogwu,” a name I also know him by. He became especially popular for his witty line, “Achalugo, I’m going to marry you.” That role made him one of the most talked-about actors of the year and confirmed that he was having a truly stellar run in the movie scene throughout 2025.</p>

<p>Even in <em>Behind the Scenes</em>, the 2025 film by Funke Akindele, where he played Victor alongside Scarlet Gomez’s character, Aderonke Fernandez, he delivered an excellent performance. Victor was loyal, caring, and always there for Aderonke as she faked her death in the movie. Uzor made the character feel real and emotional, especially when the story ended tragically with Victor’s death.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="499" height="624" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HG_KrwWWUAABfNs.png" alt="Uzor Arukwe" class="wp-image-795379" style="width:620px;height:auto" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HG_KrwWWUAABfNs.png 499w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HG_KrwWWUAABfNs-120x150.png 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HG_KrwWWUAABfNs-90x113.png 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HG_KrwWWUAABfNs-320x400.png 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HG_KrwWWUAABfNs-240x300.png 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/HG_KrwWWUAABfNs-180x225.png 180w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px" ></figure>

<p>That role showed how versatile he is as an actor because he handled both emotional and dramatic scenes so well.</p>

<p>I think that is why many people were genuinely happy when he won the AMVCA award. It felt like Nollywood was finally giving him the recognition he has deserved for a long time.</p>

<p>What makes the win even more special is that this is Uzor Arukwe’s first-ever AMVCA win. That alone makes it a huge moment in his career because the AMVCAs are one of the biggest and most respected award platforms in Africa’s entertainment industry. Winning a major category like Best Lead Actor for the first time is a massive achievement for any actor, and for Uzor, it felt like the perfect reward for years of hard work and consistency.</p>

<p>This win was not just about <em>Colours of Fire</em>. It felt like a reward for years of hard work, consistency, and excellent performances. The surprise was not that Uzor Arukwe is talented enough to win. The real surprise is that it took this long for him to finally get his flowers.</p>

<p>Guinness Nigeria Plc stepped onto Africa&#8217;s biggest creative stage with a first-of-its-kind multi-brand sponsorship of the <a href="https://thenet.ng/my-fathers-shadow-dominates-amvca-12/">Africa Magic Viewers&#8217; Choice Awards (AMVCA)</a>, bringing Guinness, Malta Guinness, Orijin, and Smirnoff together across the 12th edition of the awards. </p>

<p>The AMVCA became a showcase for the brands Guinness Nigeria produces locally, brought to the stage through the company&#8217;s sustained partnership with Diageo. The sponsorship marks a significant shift in how Guinness Nigeria shows up in the spaces where African creativity, storytelling, and cultural identity are being shaped.</p>

<p>Speaking at the event, Girish Sharma, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Guinness Nigeria Plc, reflected on what the moment means for the company and its brands. &#8220;<em>Our continued collaboration with Diageo allows us to bring an exceptional portfolio of brands to the moments Nigerian consumers care about most. Showcasing Guinness, Orijin, and Smirnoff at a stage like the AMVCA matters because these are brands made here, by us, for the people shaping Africa&#8217;s creative and cultural future,&#8221;</em> he said.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="720" height="515" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-12-at-03.25.50.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-795396" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-12-at-03.25.50.jpeg 720w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-12-at-03.25.50-120x86.jpeg 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-12-at-03.25.50-90x64.jpeg 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-12-at-03.25.50-320x229.jpeg 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-12-at-03.25.50-560x401.jpeg 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-12-at-03.25.50-240x172.jpeg 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-12-at-03.25.50-180x129.jpeg 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/WhatsApp-Image-2026-05-12-at-03.25.50-640x458.jpeg 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" ></figure>

<p>Rotimi Odusola, Corporate Relations and Legal Director at Guinness Nigeria, who presented the Best Indigenous Language award sponsored by Smirnoff Ice, spoke to the wider significance of the partnership. </p>

<p><em>&#8220;Recognising excellence in indigenous language storytelling is a moment that sits close to who we are as a company rooted in Nigeria. Through Smirnoff Ice, we are honouring the creators keeping our languages, our stories, and our cultural identity alive on screen, and that is a privilege we do not take lightly,&#8221; </em>he said.</p>

<p>Ramanathan Solayappan, Marketing and Innovations Director at Guinness Nigeria, spoke to the consumer thinking behind the multi-brand showing. <em>&#8220;Each of our brands speaks to diverse parts of the Nigerian consumer&#8217;s life, and the AMVCA gives us one stage where all of those connections come alive at once. It is a reminder that marketing is about showing up meaningfully where culture is being shaped,&#8221;</em> he said.</p>

<p>The decision to bring a full slate of brands to one cultural moment reflects Guinness Nigeria&#8217;s broader philosophy of showing up where culture is actively being shaped. Guinness, making its AMVCA debut, presented the Best Director category, reinforcing its support for the creators shaping the future of African cinema. </p>

<p>Orijin brought its celebration of originality and African identity to the AMVCA Cultural Night, while Smirnoff added a playful, modern energy designed to connect with the younger audiences driving today&#8217;s creative culture. Malta Guinness extended its <em>Every Side of You</em> campaign into the AMVCA moment, celebrating the many sides of consumers as they show up across culture, creativity, and everyday life. Diageo also brought its Don Julio and The Singleton brands into the showcase, with Don Julio anchoring the celebration as headline sponsor.</p>

<p>The AMVCA partnership forms part of a wider cultural calendar for <a href="https://www.guinness-nigeria.com/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Guinness Nigeria</a> in 2026. Alongside activations around major football experiences and heritage moments like the Ojude Oba Festival, the AMVCA reinforces the company&#8217;s growing focus on entertainment, sport, and culture as the spaces where consumer passion and community identity intersect.</p>

<p>Through Guinness, Malta Guinness, Orijin, and Smirnoff, Guinness Nigeria did not simply sponsor an event. It participated in the broader story of African creativity, ambition, and cultural influence.</p>

<p>Veteran actress Joke Silva, Head Judge for the 12th Africa Magic Viewers&#8217; Choice Awards (<a href="https://thenet.ng/amvca-12-so-good-nigerias-music-industry-take-notes/">AMVCA</a>), says the quality of entries reviewed this year left her both proud and heartbroken: proud of what Nollywood is producing and heartbroken that the industry still lacks enough platforms to showcase it properly.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="417" src="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Joke-Silva-.webp" alt="Joke Silva on the state of Nollywood" class="wp-image-795389" srcset="https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Joke-Silva-.webp 800w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Joke-Silva--120x63.webp 120w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Joke-Silva--90x47.webp 90w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Joke-Silva--320x167.webp 320w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Joke-Silva--560x292.webp 560w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Joke-Silva--240x125.webp 240w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Joke-Silva--180x94.webp 180w, https://thenet.ng/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Joke-Silva--640x334.webp 640w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" ></figure>

<p>She made the remarks at the AMVCA 12 Icons Night held on Thursday, May 7th. <em>&#8220;The volume and quality of work we reviewed made me immensely proud of Nollywood,&#8221;</em> she said. <em>&#8220;Immensely proud — considering the kind of budgets we work with. I believe that if the rest of the world truly understood the limitations under which we create, they would salute us a million times over. </em></p>

<p><em>Watching our films, watching our stories, I became deeply heartbroken — heartbroken that there are still not enough platforms and spaces to properly showcase the incredible work we are producing.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>Joke Silva also used the occasion to challenge the widely held belief that Nollywood&#8217;s distribution problem is tied to local affordability, arguing instead that the industry has been thinking too small about who its audience actually is. <em>&#8220;People often say distribution is difficult because not enough people can afford access,&#8221;</em> she said.</p>

<p><em>&#8220;But I keep saying this: Our audience is not just Nigeria. Our audience is not just West Africa. Our audience is not only the African continent. Our audience is the entire Black race — well over a billion people across the world, and I believe this deeply.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>Joke Silva then addressed the industry&#8217;s new partners directly. <em>&#8220;I am praying that somehow, somewhere, somebody, will truly understand this reality. We give Black people pride. We tell stories without unnecessary baggage. We tell stories that allow Blackness to be seen fully and humanly. We show that we are good. We are flawed. We are beautiful. We are complicated. We are extraordinary. We are everything human beings are.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>Closing her address, Joke Silva urged every creative in the room not to give up. <em>&#8220;Do not get tired. Do not give up. Let us continue pushing boundaries. Let us continue innovating. Let us continue striving for higher standards. Let us keep moving the bar higher and higher, because we are not just entertaining people. We are helping to hold the continent together, while also reminding humanity of what humanity is supposed to look like.&#8221; </em></p>

<p>She also acknowledged the AMVCA jury, noting that while the title of <a href="https://www.dstv.com/africamagic/en-dj/video/-africa-s-stories-matter-joke-silva-amvca-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Head Judge </a>sounds prestigious, the real work was done collectively by a panel that spent countless hours watching films, debating performances, and making difficult decisions that could significantly impact careers in the industry.</p>
