This location was perfect, right under the Williamsburg bridge, so easy to get to from where I was staying on part of this trip, The Penny Hotel just a walk away.

Head in the Clouds Review

The entrance is well presented, though unassuming, in a converted building (which used to be part of an industrial factory) just steps from under the Brooklyn Bridge. The minute you step through the door, it becomes a sanctuary and I received the most incredible personal welcome from Janet, the Founder, who is very active in the business, although does not perform the therapies herself.

Welcome

Stepping through the doorway, there is a seated bench so that shoes can be removed, and you will be given a pair of slippers to wear within the spa area. The building has been converted by Janet specifically for the Cloud Spa, with white and cream plastered walls, natural wooden furniture and floors, and (even despite my lack of smell post-Covid) I was immediately aware of the relaxing fragrance.

Relaxation Space

The front part of the spa has a relaxation area with sofas and tables, where you’ll be served a welcome drink - tea or mineral water. I was then invited to move into the side treatment area with chairs to complete a very quick consultation form, all electronic and quickly completed on an iPad.

There was also a list of all of the component parts of the therapy, so that if there was anything you wanted to opt out of, you just needed to check the box, and (where applicable) choosing how you wanted your hair dried afterwards. For me, I was opting into everything, but I didn’t need to choose a drying option!

This included:

• Al Scalp Analysis

• Tea Steam

• Shampoo & Conditioning

• Waterfall Therapy

• Gua Sha (Gentle scraping of the scalp with a smooth edged tool to  improve circulation and reduce tension)

• Hand / Arm Massage

• Shoulder Massage

• Neck Massage

• Face Massage

• Buccal Massage (Massaging inside and outside of the cheeks (to relieve  tense muscles, and TMJ relief)

• Blow Dry

The first part of the experience was to have my scalp analysed with a small hand-held tool - Janet just located the device onto four different sections of my head, and from the iPad I had been given I could see images of my scalp ultra close up - scary!

After that, I was shown to the central table which was set up with a whole variety of ingredients for me to pick, and which would be infused as part of the tea steam. There was everything from dried roses, to koji berries, lemons, strawberries and various herbs. From having instantly received my full scalp analysis to my phone by WhatsApp, and Janet having the insight to read the results, she was on hand to give advice as to what would be the best blend for me. I also chose an essential oil, from a choice of four different options.

Janet also selected various additional items to add to my personalised treatment tray, of Oway, an Italian brand featuring a whole array of organic, biodynamic and fair-trade ingredients in sustainable packaging.

Once my tray was complete, I was taken through to one of the two double treatment rooms, and introduced to my therapist.

My Treatment Experience

There are two couples treatment suites, each with two relaxing beds where you lie flat, face up, with your head positioned on a rest in the middle of what is basically a sink where your therapist will rinse your head at various stages, and this also creates the steam treatment too.

Chromatherapy and aromatherapy is all part of the treatment, and we started off with a face cleanse before moving onto all the other parts of the treatment. The list is above, albeit not exhaustive and the 90 minute treatment was just thorough relaxation, as well as being very therapeutic, including the clay face mask, akin to what I would have in Environ facials, without the DF electrical technology.

Head in the Clouds Head Spa Williamsburg: The Highlights

There were so many good parts to this overall experience, but here are just some key highlights:

• Location – so easy to get to, and as I said just a short walk from the main Williamsburg hotels. The waterfront is a minute away too, with other facilities and of course one of my favourite buildings, the old Domino factory .

• Warm Welcome – Janet was an absolute delight, clearly so passionate about her new business venture and full of ideas for what’s next to give her clients just the best experiences.

• Therapist - she was excellent, and the treatment just flowed. Being there alone, there was another client in the other bed on the other side of the room, but there was a full curtain in between and the one side still felt very private.

• Uniqueness - so great to get the scalp analysis, and I loved the blend of new technology and AI combined with the naturalness of all of the ingredients and products, as well as both being expertly blended with ancient oriental techniques.

• Treatment - I can say I enjoyed every part of the treatment, but I did especially like when a hood type cover was put over the sink area to create almost a facial steam/sauna while my arms and hands were expertly massaged.

• Jaw massage - I can also genuinely say I have NEVER had this before, and some folks might find it strange, albeit I enjoyed it once I got over the request to open my mouth. If you don’t like the idea, tick the box to remove this, and it just won’t be part of your experience.

Areas for Improvement

For anyone has read my reviews before, you should know they are always honest, and will regularly pick up on any negatives - for spa reviews this can invariably be when a spa hasn’t considered the option of male disposable underwear, and a g-string type thong designed for a woman’s body is never a good look (or practical on a man - I can never work out what’s meant to be front or back). There was nothing like that here - you just remove any top clothing and rest under the blanket, as the treatment will also cover your decolletage and arms.

There is genuinely nothing negative I would add here - it really was such a positive experience from start to finish.

Final Thoughts on Head in the Clouds Head Spa Williamsburg

I cannot recommend this highly enough, both for the uniqueness of the therapy and analysis combination, but also for the relaxation effect and making me think about my scalp differently. I was very relaxed afterwards, as well as both my scalp feeling rejuvenated and the hair (what’s left) was ultra soft. 

While I will spend a considerable amount of time, effort (and money) on face products (and body moisturising) other than still using some shampoo and conditioner in the shower, thinking this will be sufficient for maintaining my scalp, I’ve never thought about using head products. This treatment has now completely changed this, especially seeing the detailed analysis results, and I have now bought a moisturising and mattifying product to use going forward. While the spa does sell products, there was zero hard sell and in fact no sell at all. They’re there if you want to look and potentially buy, but definitely not one of those spas where you’re given a list of what’s been used on you, with the suggestion that you buy the whole range!

Realising that Icelandair were starting a new service between Edinburgh and Reykjavik , I took the opportunity to go back and revisit The Retreat Hotel at the Blue Lagoon, and of course I spent most of my time at the amazing Retreat Spa. This time I also booked a treatment, which turned out to be such an incredible experience - an in water massage.

The spa experience

If you’re staying in the hotel, you have unlimited access to both the spa and lagoon at The Retreat, but also access to the main Blue Lagoon and its facilities too. From my last visit, the steam and sauna facilities had been upgraded, and were excellent.

The Ritual

I completed the Blue Lagoon ritual a couple of times during my stay, with these four steps, after having warmed up the body to open pores, in either the steam room or the sauna.

Step 1: -Cleansing - The ritual begins with a nourishing body scrub, which combines Blue Lagoon silica, volcanic minerals, and the geothermal seawater’s microalgae. This scrub gently exfoliates the skin, leaving it smooth and revitalized. You then take a shower and dry off before the next step.

Step 2: Detoxifying - After cleansing, you apply a mineral-rich mud mask made from the Blue Lagoon’s silica. Once dried on the body, again take another shower and dry off before the next step.

Step 3: Masking - You  apply a mineral-rich mud mask made from the Blue Lagoon’s algae. This mask purifies and revitalizes the skin, helping to restore its natural radiance. For the last time, you take another shower and dry off.

Step 4: Moisturizing - The final step is the application of a hydrating argan oil that seals in moisture and nourishes the skin. This product is also derived from the Blue Lagoon’s unique natural resources. There is a different version for face and neck vs body, and you’re also given a lip balm.

The recommendation is that you relax for a while before either going back into the lagoon, or taking further heat therapies. There is a relaxation room overlooking the lagoon (The Nest) or a darker inside relaxation space (Fireplace Room) where I could have spent hours. There’s also the Refresh room with views over the outside terrace (steam cave, viewing platform over the main Blue Lagoon and the cold well) where you can find drinks and snacks.

My Review - The Retreat Spa

This is such a special place for me, I just love it. If you’re staying in the hotel, you can access the spa and lagoons without having to check into the spa reception, unless you’re booked in for a treatment, as I was. With my having booked the in-water massage, and also looking to get changed later in the spa, after the check-out time, I was allocated a changing suite.

Changing facilities

I mentioned in my last review how exceptional these facilities are, and how they compared to say the likes of the Sky Lagoon. I did go back again to the Sky Lagoon (for their more premium Sér package) and while those changing facilities are good, at the Retreat they’re amazing.

Each suite has a large vanity unit and sink, walk-in twin overhead rain showers, and complete with robes, slippers, towels and all toiletries that you might need, including another gift set of the Blue Lagoon skincare collection.

Think dark slate tiles and wood, with clever subtle LED adjustable lighting, and nice touches (if you need them) like hairdryers and straighteners. The only thing that I initially thought was missing was a bag for swimwear, but on checking one of the vanity units drawers, I found a couple of compostable wet bags there. They really do think of everything.

Facilities

In the Retreat itself, there’s a dedicated spa restaurant, fitness and yoga room up in the main hotel, and in the spa area which surrounds the exclusive lagoon, there’s a steam cave, sauna, lava spring, cold plunge well, and the ritual area with the four steps above.

The Lagoon

From The Retreat, you can slip straight into the private lagoon at different levels, connected by little bridges and walkways, all filled with those mineral-rich geothermal waters. And if you fancy a change of scene, you’ve also got full access to the main Blue Lagoon included in your stay.

Food & Drink - The Spa Restaurant

I had breakfast in the hotel lobby area, but the spa restaurant is open all day for drinks, snacks or a full lunch. Food is excellent as is service, and you can be as indulgent or as healthy as you like. A really nice feature just outside is a window direct from the lagoon into the restaurant, where you can press a bell to be served drinks whilst still bathing. Whether you’re a day spa guest, or staying in the hotel, you’ll be provided with a wristband such that you can charge anything to your account - this also works in the main bar in the Blue Lagoon itself. I’ve never had sparkling strawberry wine anywhere bar there, and I had it again this time!

My Spa Treatment

The spa menu at The Retreat is extensive—there’s something for every kind of indulgence, from the signature in-water massage (which I experienced) to more grounded therapies on land. 

When I visited, I chose the in-water massage, which is as magical as it sounds: you float gently atop a submerged mattress in the geothermal water while the therapist works their way through salt scrubs, algae wraps, and full-body massage sequences. The natural buoyancy and the mineral-rich waters make for an experience unlike any regular massage—it feels like you're surrendering to the water as much as to the touch. 

But that’s not all. The Retreat also offers:

• Float therapy: an immersive session where you drift in the lagoon, letting the water’s support and texture help you unwind fully. 

• The Blue Lagoon Ritual (or “Ritual”)—a multi-step body & skin treatment built around their signature ingredients: silica, volcanic minerals, algae and sea mud. It includes cleansing, detoxifying, masking, and moisturizing phases. 

• Blue Lagoon + facials

Next time I’d love to experience Lava Cove, a private sanctuary within the incredible sanctuary of the Blue Lagoon Retreat. This is a hidden world — a private suite where your own lagoon flows just steps from your living space. Think: 42 m² of sanctuary with its own 28 m² warm lagoon, plush seating, and a flickering fireplace, cocooned inside the volcanic hush of The Retreat.

The Retreat Hotel

You can read my full hotel review here, but I can tell you here this is such an amazing option for Iceland. Whether you’re using this as a base for touring around the island, or having an extended spa break, I cannot recommend this highly enough. It’s an amazing design and so carefully designed around the lagoon to maximise the views, and services and facilities to match.

My only regret is not having booked longer. I would say the perfect timing would be at least two nights; this way you could have a full day experience in the spa and lagoons without rushing, book some treatments, and have two nights to try both restaurants - Lava and Moss.

The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon: The Highlights

The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon delivered so many memorable moments, but these are the highlights that truly stood out during my spa experience.

• The style and design of the Retreat - Spa and Hotel

• The new improved facilities at the main Blue Lagoon itself - love the steam cave just off the lagoon, and the sauna with panoramic windows was excellent. Can’t wait to see what they improve next.

• My in-water massage was like nothing I’ve had before - I never thought it was even possible to have a massage with oils in water - the therapist was so good.

• I love the exclusivity of the Retreat Spa, but I would also love to see the Lava Cove.

• Food and drinks - very indulgent, having champagne while bathing.

• It sounds odd saying the changing suites were a highlight, but they are so exceptional, really!

Opportunities for Enhancement

Whenever I stay at a hotel or visit a spa, I like to focus on the highlights of the experience. That said, there are often small details that, if improved, could make an already excellent stay even better. These are, of course, personal observations, but they reflect what I feel could truly elevate the overall experience.

• I said the last time that my only recommendation would have been to combine the spa visit with a stay in the Retreat Hotel. Having done that this time, my only enhancement opportunity would have been to stay for another night!

Final thoughts on the Retreat Spa

An absolutely fantastic experience again, and really enhanced by also staying in the Retreat Hotel. Having been twice, I would love to go back again and would recommend this so highly to any clients. Really a wonderful experience from start to finish.

Damu Spa London Review

Hidden within the artistic, bohemian setting of The Mandrake Hotel in Fitzrovia, Damu Spa London is one of the capital’s newest wellness destinations — and it offers something truly different. Opened in early 2025, the spa blends ancient healing traditions with modern innovation, creating a sanctuary where you can move seamlessly from candlelit mud rituals to futuristic multi-sensory therapies like the Origin Pool.

I visited during a London weekend break, staying at the nearby Sanderson Hotel, and couldn’t resist making time to explore this new spa, located literally just a few minutes’ walk away. With its serene spaces, holistic treatments, and advanced skin technologies, Damu Spa is already redefining what a luxury urban spa experience can be.

Changing facilities

On checking in, I was shown to a compact changing area with a large vanity counter, a single cubicle shower, and a few individual lockers. I don’t think these were strictly private (there seemed to be three in total), but I was the only person using mine during my visit and was advised to shower before entering the Origin Pool.

I was given a locker with an electronic wristband key, which contained a robe, flip-flops, and a pair of large disposable boxer-style shorts to wear instead of swimming trunks.

The shower was well stocked with quality toiletries, and there were plenty of towels provided. The spacious vanity area was equipped with everything you might need to freshen up afterwards, making the experience feel both convenient and thoughtfully prepared.

Relaxation Space

Once showered and changed, I was guided to a beautifully designed relaxation lounge. Set beneath a striking domed glass roof, the space is filled with lush greenery and dotted with comfortable daybeds and loungers, creating a serene, almost garden-like atmosphere indoors.

Before my treatment, I was offered a choice of chamomile tea or water, the perfect way to settle in and begin the transition into a slower, more mindful state. The combination of natural light, plants, and quiet calm made it an inviting space to pause before the main experience.

My Treatment Experience

I was shown into a private treatment room, where sliding doors revealed the Origin Pool. At first, the space appeared almost pitch dark until my eyes adjusted to the dim lighting. Subtle coloured neon glowed faintly around the edges, creating an otherworldly ambience. For orientation, the therapist briefly turned up the lights so I could see the futuristic layout of the room more clearly.

To one side was an open overhead shower area, while opposite stood a sink and illuminated mirror, both adding to the sleek, almost space-age design of the environment.

The therapist explained that my journey would begin with chromatherapy — the use of coloured light to influence mood and restore balance to body and mind. The pool itself integrates shifting tones of light, each chosen to promote relaxation, vitality, or clarity.

Once immersed in the warm, Epsom salt–infused water, the sequence included a series of sensory stages: gentle vibrations and flowing water movements that felt almost like an underwater massage, all set to ambient music that filled the chamber. The ritual concluded with a simulated rain sequence, cascading from above in a soft downpour to complete the cycle of renewal.

The Mandrake Hotel

Nestled in the heart of Fitzrovia, just moments from Oxford Street and Soho, The Mandrake Hotel is a surreal and stylish boutique escape that feels anything but ordinary. Located at 20–21 Newman Street, this art-filled hideaway features approximately 33 luxurious bedrooms, including three opulent suites and a showstopping penthouse, all arranged around a lush, jasmine-draped courtyard.

Damu Spa London: The Highlights

This visit to Damu Spa London was filled with thoughtful touches and memorable details. Here are the highlights that stood out most during my experience:

• Location – Ideally placed in Fitzrovia, just a couple of minutes’ walk from The Sanderson (which no longer has its own spa), and of course perfectly convenient if you’re staying at The Mandrake Hotel itself. It also makes a great wellness stop while exploring central London.

• Warm Welcome – A smooth, friendly check-in process, with the team quickly showing me to a well-equipped changing suite and explaining how the visit would unfold.

• Relaxation Space – A light-filled lounge beneath a domed glass roof, complete with plenty of daybeds, greenery, and calming touches. I was offered chamomile tea or water here before my treatment — a lovely way to settle in.

• The Origin Pool – A truly unique, multi-sensory treatment. I especially appreciated the option of a float ring beneath my head, which made it easier to relax once the water jets started to move me around the pool at speed. The blend of flotation, light, sound, and water pressure was unlike anything I’ve tried before.

Areas for Improvement

While my overall experience at DAMU Spa London was excellent, I always like to note any small areas where things could be improved to make a great visit even better.

• The only small drawback during my visit was a little uncertainty around the end of the treatment. After the rain cycle finished, I wasn’t entirely sure whether the therapist was planning to return straight away. She had mentioned checking in before I moved on to the shower (to rinse off the salt), but for a few moments I found myself wondering if I should get out on my own.

• Once I had taken the shower and changed back into my robe, there was a similar pause where I wasn’t sure if I should wait for her to return or simply exit myself. The door release button didn’t seem to work, and it felt wrong to press the emergency exit, so a touch more guidance at this stage would have been helpful.

Final Thoughts on DAMU Spa London

This was an experience I had been really looking forward to — and it didn’t disappoint. Its location was ideal for where we were staying, and the atmospheric entrance to The Mandrake Hotel, with its subtle signage and hidden-away feel, made me want to return and experience a full stay there too. Whether you come to DAMU Spa as a day visitor or as a hotel guest, it’s well worth it either way.

I’m not sure I had the full “experiential journey” that some might describe in the Origin Pool, but once I allowed my mind to settle, I found it deeply relaxing. The sequence of light, sound, and movement unfolded gradually, and I was surprised at just how much motion the water jets created. It wasn’t quite being spun around the pool, but shifting from stillness to a gentle whirl was unexpectedly enjoyable. (Just watch out for the edges!)

Overall, DAMU Spa is a place I would highly recommend — an innovative, luxurious experience that feels genuinely different from many other urban spas. It would be a memorable addition to any stay at The Mandrake, and a great wellness destination in its own right.

Spa treatment selection at The Strong Rooms

A Bespoke Approach to Wellness – Tailored Treatments for Every Guest

The wellness selection is split into five areas, Gleneagles Treatments, Express Treatments, Dr. Barbara Sturm, Tata Harper, and Additional Therapies. Initially I had wanted to choose The Long Exhale, one of the Gleneagles Signature Treatments, but with (I now realise) just one therapist and one treatment room, we just couldn't get this booking to tie in with our stay.

Instead, I opted for an 80 minute ‘Be in the Moment’ personalised massage:

“Every day is different. Everyone is unique. Our body tells us what we need. Experience a sensory journey and your therapist will curate a massage honoring your individual needs. This treatment blends holistic bodywork to remedy any areas of concern and return you to equilibrium. No two treatments will ever be the same. Depart feeling relaxed and restored.”

The longer 80 minute version was £135, a shorter 50 minutes was available at £95, all treatments have an optional service charge of 12.5% applied. I would say this was really good value for money, the treatment was excellent and facilities (though limited as I’ve said) were excellent.

Luxury, Wellness, and Design – My Experience at The Strong Rooms

I made the appointment by filling in a short form on the website, and I was soon contacted by email to confirm availability. Engagement was excellent throughout, and when I arrived I was met by one of their wellness advisors, Naimh, who was really great about explaining where everything was, what the options were for class bookings etc. and even showed me around the cryotherapy room, albeit this is something I was previously medically advised wasn’t for me. 

Once I was ensconced in my robe and seated in the small reception area waiting for my treatment, there was a short consultation form to complete, and I liked that the business card of the Wellness Manager was clearly visible in the folder, I guess in case a guest has any issues or complaints. In my case, I will forward Tessa this blog to commend both the standard of the facilities and the staff that I met during my stay. 

Changing facilities

Once Naimh had arranged one of the oversized and super-luxurious dark green Gleneagles bathrobes (and slippers which were also super-padded), she showed me into the men’s locker room area. Both the male and female changing areas are in the original bank vaults, so to access them you walk through the massive secure steel doors. Don’t worry, this does not feel oppressive, and I’m told the doors are now welded open, so no risk of you being trapped in the vault. If you were a guest in the hotel, it was generally accepted that you would reach The Strong Rooms in your hotel robe, for any treatments.

Though not massive, the changing area was superbly appointed with an open area at the entrance used as both a towel-store and coat wardrobe, before the next section opened up into a locker area. These were all accessible with either your member’s card or a room card; I had neither (checked in but room wasn’t yet available) so Naimh sorted me out with a temporary card.

As well as having the infra-red (two-person) seated sauna in the centre of this changing space (with colour-changing neon highlights) there was a large vanity area at the back with four well-appointed shower units.

The spa treatment room

This was large and well-appointed, adjustable lighting and perfectly cool. The massage bed, very comfortable (though it did take me a little while to adjust to the head position as it was extremely flat/almost felt sloping down) and was heated. I was warm from just having done a workout in the gym, then a warm shower, but it was a perfect combination of feeling warm but not overly hot, and being cooled by the air-conditioning breeze.

My therapist checked what I wanted from the bespoke treatment, and I confirmed deep pressure, and whether there was any part of the body she should concentrate on more, or avoid. The treatment throughout was really excellently performed and there were regular check-ins about the level of pressure, room temperature, music etc. Highly, highly recommended.

Food & Drink

Unlike the main Gleneagles Hotel with its own spa restaurant, there really is nothing at The Townhouse, albeit there was a small kitchen area (as with everything, stylishly designed) with a water dispensing machine, a fruit bowl, and a fridge with chilled towels.

A City-Centre Retreat with the Signature Gleneagles Touch

You can read my full review here. This is so completely different from the Auchterarder Gleneagles, but I really loved it. WIth only 33 rooms across the two buildings, in four different categories, this really felt like an uber-luxury townhouse stay. It’s in a perfect location right on St. Andrews’ Square and within easy walking distance to all of the main sites, and with shopping and dining options right on the doorstep. A really lovely stay, and I’m only sad that it was just the one night.

Top Reasons to Book a Spa & Wellbeing Stay at Gleneagles Townhouse

This spa experience had plenty of standout moments, but here are some of the key highlights that truly made it special.

• Location - now that this has opened up to the public, it’s a perfect central location and so easy to get to. The tram stop is literally right outside.

• My treatment - I find a spa therapy can never be too long, but the 80 minutes was an excellent massage, and I definitely felt taller afterwards.

• The Strong Rooms - I love when buildings are repurposed. This was a beautiful design throughout the lower floor which accommodated the wellness area, and cleverly built out of the original bank faults.

• Equipment - Technogym equipment is always excellent to use, and everything here was the latest and really good to use.

• Move Room Two - although I have had a ‘The Reformer’ session before (actually at Le Sirenuse in Positano, Italy), there wasn’t time on this trip but something I would love to go back for.

• People - Naimh on reception was a delight to engage with, and the same with my massage therapist. Both were clearly passionate about delivering an excellent service from The Strong Rooms.

Areas for improvement

What Could Enhance the Experience Even Further?

I always focus on the positives when visiting a hotel or spa, but there are times when small details could have made the experience even better. Of course, this is personal preference, but here are a few areas where I think improvements could be made.

• Probably nothing I would add here, other than (by personal preference) I would have liked a steam room and some hydrotherapy treatments.

• There is only one therapist and one treatment room, so some more availability would be good, but I do recognise that they keep portraying this as a wellness facility, not a spa.

• I would have liked a longer stay in the hotel, to have more time to try out some of the classes, especially a Reformer session in their dedicated room.

Is This the Best Boutique Spa Experience in Edinburgh?

I know there can be sometimes disappointment if you build up too much expectation, but that was not the case here with either The Strong Rooms or the Gleneagles Townhouse hotel either. The facilities aren’t as extensive as the wonderful experience I had at Gleneagles (main hotel) but still a hugely positive visit and a great addition to an excellent central hotel, with the usual high Gleneagles standards.

Although I initially hoped to stay at The Retreat, for my first visit to Iceland - and I know there will be more - I chose to base myself in central Reykjavik. This decision was influenced by the Blue Lagoon’s recent temporary closures due to increased volcanic activity since December 2023, including a significant eruption in November 2024 that covered the main parking lot in lava, leading to extended closures for safety.

The Spa Experience

My day visit allowed for a 5 hour exclusive entry to the Retreat Spa - although I visited on my own this time, the experience could be for two people. This INCREDIBLE experience (and I don’t use that word lightly) included:

• Retreat Spa

• Retreat Lagoon

• The Blue Lagoon Ritual

• The Blue Lagoon

• Private changing room (accommodates up to two guests)

• Skincare amenities

• A drink of your choice

• Access to the Spa Restaurant

• Access to 8 experience areas

What I loved about this (and there were so many things to love) is that you had the ultra-exclusive privacy of your private changing suite and all of the above at the sanctuary of The Retreat, but full access to all of the Blue Lagoon services too. When I was there some of the facilities in the main Blue Lagoon were being upgraded, but I’ve seen online what improvements have been made and it’s definitely somewhere I would want to revisit time and time again.

The Ritual

The Retreat Spa Ritual at the Blue Lagoon is a luxurious, self-guided experience designed to immerse guests in the rejuvenating properties of the Blue Lagoon's mineral-rich waters. The ritual consists of four key steps, each using exclusive Blue Lagoon products:

1. Cleansing - The ritual begins with a nourishing body scrub, which combines Blue Lagoon silica, volcanic minerals, and the geothermal seawater’s microalgae. This scrub gently exfoliates the skin, leaving it smooth and revitalized.

2. Detoxifying - After cleansing, guests apply a mineral-rich mud mask made from the Blue Lagoon’s silica.

3. Masking - Guests apply a mineral-rich mud mask made from the Blue Lagoon’s algae. This mask purifies and revitalizes the skin, helping to restore its natural radiance.

4. Moisturizing - The final step is the application of a hydrating oil or lotion that seals in moisture and nourishes the skin. This product is also derived from the Blue Lagoon’s unique natural resources.

I had done something similar on my previous visit to the Sky Lagoon (you can read all about that experience here which I called Rejuvenation Above the Horizon: My Serene Escape at Sky Lagoon Iceland.

However, as much as I enjoyed that visit (a particular highlight was a glass of chilled champagne whilst bathing in the lagoon), The Retreat took the experience to a whole new level of luxury and exclusivity. But, you could still enjoy a glass of chilled champagne (or chilled beer as I had too) in both the Retreat lagoon (there was a window from the lagoon straight into the restaurant and you press a button for service) or the main bar areas in the Blue Lagoon itself by using your wristband to pay.

My Review - The Retreat Spa

I will go on to explain the experience in more detail, but in a snapshot this was one of my best spa experiences ever, so unique! After enjoying what I thought had been quite an exclusive experience at the Sky Lagoon with their option of enhanced changing facilities, The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon took this to a whole new level with your own private changing suite which you kept during your entire visit.

Changing facilities

Your wristband controlled access to the private changing suite, which was really decent sized with a large vanity area with huge mirrors in the front section, with a two person open slate walled double shower at the rear. Robes and slippers were provided, as were lots of perfect towels, and there were all toiletries (Blue Lagoon branded) available for use, as well as a selection to take home too in a gift bag. Not much use to me, but there was also a hairdryer and hair straighteners provided too.

Facilities

There were various steam rooms to begin with, to warm up and open up the pores of the skin before going into the four-step guided ritual. Once having gone through the cycle of mineral salt, silica mud, algae paste, then a cold towel and algae oils; it was time to relax in one of the many chill out spaces throughout the spa, and then into the lagoon itself. There was the option of glass boxed with views over the lagoon, or one I loved with a darkened room behind a heavy curtain with beds to relax and a real fire.

The Lagoon

You can access the private lagoon of The Retreat from various access points, and this is on different levels and has quite a few bridges; all with the mineral rich geothermal waters. You can also go into the main Blue Lagoon area too, all access included.

Food & Drink - The Spa Restaurant

The Spa Restaurant at The Retreat overlooks the lagoon, and a really relaxing space where you enjoy a coffee or drink, snack, or lunch. I did some of the treatments first before stopping for lunch which was Burrata (Tomato, basil, gazpacho) with unlimited (and totally delicious) sourdough bread with oils, before finishing off with a dessert of Dark chocolate mousse (Olive oil, seeds, sea salt) and a couple of glasses of fizz to accompany the meal.

After lunch I then just spent the rest of my time between the various areas of the Retreat Lagoon (I had to order another glass of fizz from the window) and then also went to check out the main lagoon area too, and had a chilled glass of beer there too.

Perfect Escape: Ideal Times to Visit the Blue Lagoon

You’re going to find the main Blue Lagoon is always busy, being such an iconic place to visit at any time of the year. The Retreat is only limited to hotel guests (there are only 60 suites here) plus day visitors, which are limited in numbers to ensure an exclusive experience. If you’re in Iceland for only a few days, I certainly wouldn’t leave visiting until your last day, in case of any unplanned closures. I was in Iceland for four nights, and had actually planned to visit on my last day, which actually worked out ok on this occasion. 

There had been some very recent eruptions just the day before I arrived (and you could see the dramatic glowing fissures from the plane on landing) and the whole of the Blue Lagoon was closed. It remained closed for the next couple of days, but I was lucky in that it reopened the day of my visit. To be on the safe side though, maybe do this in one of your first few days, so that if it does close you have options to rebook.

The Retreat Hotel

The Retreat Hotel at Blue Lagoon is an architectural masterpiece seamlessly blending with the surrounding lava fields. Boasting 60 elegant suites, it offers unparalleled tranquillity and privacy. Guests can indulge in the mineral-rich waters of the Retreat Lagoon, unwind in the subterranean spa carved into volcanic rock, and savour Icelandic cuisine at the acclaimed Moss Restaurant. Every corner of The Retreat is designed to enhance relaxation and provide an unforgettable luxury experience.

My intention would be on a future visit to Iceland to stay somewhere else to begin with, perhaps Reykjavik again, but spend the last two nights at The Retreat Hotel. I could literally have spent longer than my five hours as a day guest, so one night would be too short I think. The plan would be to arrive in the afternoon to be able to experience the lagoon at sunset/evening, then a full day of the lagoon experience and treatments, before having yet another night to relax before heading home.

Things to Know Before Your Visit

There were a few things that I wondered about, that I didn’t necessarily see the answers to online:

• The changing suites are so exceptional, and after my visit to the Sky Lagoon where you use shared ‘private’ changing rooms, at The Retreat the changing suite is yours for the entire visit.

• While The Retreat is a separate exclusive part of the lagoon, you can walk through the thermal area where you would go out into an area of the main lagoon for floatation treatments, and from there you can swim into the general access area.

• The restaurant is fully available for you just in a bathrobe and slippers (which are provided for either hotel or day guests) and anything can be charged using your wristband.

• I wasn’t sure whether this wristband would work in the main Blue Lagoon area too, for the bars there, but indeed they did. At the end of the day, on check-out as a day guest you just settle up for any extras.

Whenever I stay at a property or visit a spa, I focus on highlighting the positives of the experience. However, there are times when I notice areas that could be improved to create an even better spa experience or stay. While these observations are subjective, they reflect what could enhance the overall experience.

• I had such a special experience here, there is nothing that I can think of which would have improved the day; other than staying over in the hotel!

Final thoughts on the Retreat Spa

With this being somewhere I had wanted to visit for a while, I am so glad I have now been and it did not disappoint in any way. It’s only given me more encouragement to visit Iceland again, and to go back and stay at The Retreat Hotel for a longer experience. This time I will take ‘Mrs’ TPT - as much as he can moan about too long a treatment time or too much spa time, I think he would love it here as there are so many relaxation areas where you can just chill and read.

The Spa Experience

The main thing here is the huge lagoon pool, filled with geothermal waters. When you book your visit there are three options (all of which you can add inclusive transport to):

• Sér (the top option, including the ritual and private changing rooms)

• Saman (includes the ritual)

• Pure (bathing in the lagoon only)

When you arrive and check in, you’ll be given one colour of electronic wristband for Sér and another for the other packages, if you’ve included the ritual then you’ll also be given a separate black wristband which you’ll give up at the start of the ritual in the Turf House. This is situated on the other side of the lagoon pool, which is the first thing you’ll enter directly from either changing room.

The Ritual (or Skjól): A Seven-Step Journey to Bliss

The order you’re meant to do this in is as follows:

1. The Lagoon (Laug)

2. The Cold Plunge (Kuldi)

3. Sauna (Ylur)

4. Cold Mist (Súld)

5. Sky Body Scrub (Mykt)

6. Steam (Gufa)

7. Elixir (Saft)

Not having my glasses, I got this a bit wrong. I did indeed spend time in the lagoon first (with a glass of Moet, which was very nice) but then when I went into the turf house area, I took off my glasses and left them in a locker. I had missed the cold plunge on the way in, but then went into one of the two saunas, with the incredible panoramic windows overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. This wasn’t too hot, but I sat there for a while before moving on to the next area which was the cold mist. 

Mainly right so far, but then when I was given a container with the sea salt scrub (with almond oil and sesame seed oil) which I thought you were then meant to wash off before going into the steam room. Apparently not, I found out afterwards - you’re meant to keep the scrub on, then shower off afterwards before going back into the lagoon. I did that last bit right, and this time tried the special offer of Pina Colada beer - remarkably refreshing, and quite unique to be having a drink in a location like this, being warm in the geothermal waters.

My Review - Sky Lagoon

This was a really good experience, the added transport option worked well and I was glad I had opted for the Sér package including the more private changing facilities and the 7-step ritual. I enjoyed the daytime experience, but I think if I was going back (and I will on a future trip with ‘Mrs’ The Private Traveller, who couldn’t come along this time) would be to go at dusk. There were lights all around the lagoon, and it would be magical to watch the sun go down on the horizon.

Changing facilities

There were two options here when booking (after the reception desk, Saman is left [public] and Sér is to the right and more private). You take your shoes off as you go in, then there is a decent number of private changing/shower areas where you can undress, then you put all of your belongings into one of the lockers. Everything is electronic and links to your wristband - use it to lock the locker, and if you forget your number, there are devices on the wall where you can scan your wristband and it reminds you of the locker number.

After the bathing experience and the ritual, when you come back to get changed in each ‘lane’ with the lockers there are a number of toilets and a number of the changing suites to shower and change in private. There are lots of towels in the changing areas, and there always seemed to be quite a few attendants making sure everything was clean and ship-shape. 

The Lagoon

You access this directly from the back of the changing room area, and it was just up to my chest, so you can either walk through or swim. At first, I took my phone in with me for some pictures, which I did when having my glass of Moet, but then I went back to the locker area and left it there throughout. The bar in the lagoon did sell waterproof bags for phones (and also sunglasses and sunscreen), but like most people I just held it above the water level, and made sure I didn’t drop it, albeit it is now a waterproof iPhone!

Food & Drink

There’s the Gelmir cave bar in the lagoon itself, which serves a whole selection of beers, wine, champagne, cider, cocktails and non-alcoholic and soft drinks too. It’s easy that you just have your wristband scanned, and then you pay for any drinks at the end. This was a really easy process, you just have your credit card scanned at reception on arrival, and as you leave there is both a manned desk to pay, or automatic stations where you scan the band and then pay any balance on the credit card machine. You keep your band until you then leave through the turnstiles, by dropping the band into the turnstile which proves whether you’ve paid and can be let out! 

On site too in the main reception building is both a café and restaurant, and a shop selling spa products and other things too.

Perfect Escape: Ideal Times to Visit Sky Lagoon

I had booked a time slot of 1pm, with this being Culture Day (as I found out after having booked the weekend to Iceland) I thought it might be quite a quiet time. It wasn’t, I suspect this will be busy throughout the day. I think if I was coming back, depending on time of year and sunset, it might be good to come later in the day.

Things to Know Before Your Visit

There were a few things that I wondered about, that I didn’t necessarily see the answers to online:

• If you book the private changing rooms, they’re definitely worth that bit extra for the privacy. Each suite has a decent sized changing area and large walk-in shower, with body/hair wash and conditioner. In the changing area there is body lotion and a hairdryer.

• It was easy enough to take your phone into the lagoon, you’ll see lots of people doing this but a waterproof case would be a good idea. I actually have one at home, which I’ve never used, but you can also buy them from the bar, if you’re nervous about dropping it.

• If we’re in a spa as a couple, I generally rely on being with my husband so I can see where to go if I take off my glasses. Wearing them in the lagoon wasn’t an issue, the water is warm and there’s a bit of steam, but a lot of folks wore sunglasses anyway. In the turf house, it would be hard to wear glasses in the sauna and steam, but there are other small lockers there (again locked with your same wristband) 

• Pay attention to the sequence of the ritual, I got the cold plunge the wrong way round, and showered off the salt scrub before going into the steam! 

Sky Lagoon: The Highlights

• Location - easy to get from the centre of Reykjavik, and good have the inclusive transport option as part of the package.  Stunning too on the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

• This was operated by Reykjavik Excursions and the driver was excellent. The transfer was a bit disrupted with all the delays for Culture Day, but I was taken directly there without having to change minibus, which I think might be the norm at the bus station once everyone has been collected from the various pick-up points.

• Changing facilities - worth the extra for more privacy.

• Cleanliness and organisation - all very clean through and well organised from start to finish.

• The ritual - well organised, but as below the Steam Room was incredibly busy and not everyone could get a seat. 

Opportunities for Enhancement

Whenever I stay at a property or visit a spa, I focus on highlighting the positives of the experience. However, there are times when I notice areas that could be improved to create an even better spa experience or stay. While these observations are subjective, they reflect what could enhance the overall experience.

• Really not sure there is anything I would add here. I should have asked when checking in when the times were for the return (as transport was included in the package I booked) but I forgot and when I asked a couple of the changing attendants, they didn’t know. Turns out it’s on the half hour, every hour, for mine which was by Reykjavik Excursions.

• The Steam Room seemed too small for the amount of people, and not everyone got a seat. It also wasn’t the most ‘steamy’ as the door opened directly onto the exit path outside, and so many people just came in for a few seconds then walked out again, so the door seemed to be open more than it was closed. I think the ice mist room was new, and so much bigger, seems like they maybe need to upgrade the steam too.

Final thoughts on the Sky Lagoon

I had a really good visit, and I would love to go back, with ‘Mrs’ TPT, probably as above at dusk/evening/night-time for a different experience. Had I completed this review before I had tried out The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon, I wouldn’t have then said that The Retreat experience blew the Sky Lagoon out of the water, but they are different experiences at different price points, and I still maintain that I would love to go back to the Sky Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon (because of its location nearer the seismic activity) can be much more prone to last minute closures, so the Sky Lagoon is a safer bet if you’re limited for time in Iceland, and it’s much more accessible from a location point of view from Reykjavik.

Spa Facilities to Enjoy During Your Spa Experience

The spa itself features a small reception area a few stairs down from the adjacent recreation rooms, a couple of chairs for waiting, and a wooden cabinet with a decent range of products. The design is muted and stylish, with creams and browns, subtle lighting, and plaster walls.

Spa Treatment Selection at Son Bunyola

The spa offers a range of treatments, including my full-body Tramuntana Massage, which combines classic techniques, stretching, and deep tissue pressure to relieve muscle tension and restore balance. Other treatments include neck/shoulder and back massages, and the signature treatment "The Magic of the Olive Tree." Additionally, they offer body treatments, face therapies by Olivier Claire, and a selection of nail treatments.

Spa Location

Located off The Salon on the lower level of the original Finca building, the spa was a pleasant surprise. My treatment was excellent, the therapist was skilled, and the massage bed was extremely comfortable.

The treatment - what was it like?

Excellent therapist and good treatment. With the longer massage time, I do just wish there was the perfect bed where your face doesn’t start to feel a bit of pressure.

Son Bunyola Spa: The Highlights

There were so many highlights of my spa experience at Son Bunyola and their Spa, including:

• Location: Easily accessible on the lower level of the hotel, with close-by lift access from our Tower Suite 19.

• Booking: Easy to book in advance by email, with a good selection of treatments available

• Presentation: Though small, the spa is beautifully presented with relaxing treatment rooms.

• Facilities: Comfortable massage beds and in-room amenities like the en-suite shower.

Areas for improvement

While I generally focus on the positives, a few improvements could enhance the spa experience:

• Relaxation Area: It would be beneficial to have a dedicated relaxation area post-treatment. After my massage, I expected to relax in a designated space but was instead quickly ushered to sign receipts and offered water to take with me. A dedicated relaxation space with refreshments would have been nice.

Final Thoughts on the Spa at Son Bunyola, Mallorca

Overall, despite a small issue with the post-treatment relaxation area, the spa experience was excellent. The treatment rooms were beautifully designed, the therapist was highly skilled, and the massage itself was both invigorating and restorative. Well done, Son Bunyola.

When I was given a gift voucher for a Spa Day (the choice of any 80 minute treatment, a two course lunch in The Wellness Café, and access to The Spa and Health Club facilities) from ‘Mrs’ ThePrivateTraveller, he said he’d phoned the (Gleneagles) Townhouse and the voucher was for there. I booked within days by emailing the address on the voucher (as below), again thinking this was for The Townhouse in Edinburgh, and turned up the following week expecting a lovely relaxing afternoon of a spa lunch followed by a treatment. I was then going to be joined for dinner in town, to make an afternoon/evening of it. That plan went by the wayside, when I turned up advising the staff on the door that I was there for a spa day. 

They said that they didn’t do spa days there, but I should go in and check with reception - to cut a long story short, I think there had been confusion all round as indeed the spa there is only for residents and members. While it can be a good thing having bookings centralised, it can make it harder to know what’s what. We’d been set off on a path thinking central Edinburgh as that was who ‘Mrs’ TPT had thought he was talking to, they’d obviously thought that only the main Gleneagles property had spa days, therefore it was obvious it would be Auchterarder only. From this then being booked online, neither party had actually specifically mentioned a location! As it was, that was the end of my first spa day (without the spa), but thankfully online booking for a favourite of mine (OneSpa Edinburgh) came to the rescue and I went there instead. With the booking being at Gleneagles Auchterarder, there was no way I would have got there in time on that day.

It took a bit of time to get a suitable date (more for me vs them), but since we didn’t get to try out the wellness facilities when we last stayed at the main Gleneagles property (in 2020 when there were all the Covid restrictions), I was keen to try this out. I also think the spa in its current form, was only opened in 2021, so after our stay anyway.

Why choose The Gleneagles Hotel for your spa break?

This is a large hotel, and can be quite family orientated, but it’s in fantastic surroundings with great facilities, and if you’re into golf in a big way, I’m sure you’re probably already aware of Gleneagles. After my spa day which, after an initial rocky start last year with the wrong location, was amazing and it really made me want to go back and stay, without all the Covid restrictions this time. Ideally I probably wouldn’t choose a Bank Holiday weekend, as the pool area when I was there was quite ‘kiddy’. That said, the spa area is completely separate (and adults only), as I’ll explain below, and even within the pool area, there is a dedicated separate (and decent sized) adults only pool and thermal suite.

I’ve yet to try out The Townhouse, I’m thinking I will just book a night there to try out the stay part of the hotel, and in particular the residents only gym, spa and Club lounge; even though we do live only a few miles away.

The Gleneagles Spa Review

Spa treatment selection at The Gleneagles Spa

There was a whole selection of various treatments, which could either be enjoyed as a spa day (incorporating a treatment, lunch, and use of the facilities) or enjoyed alone on a resident basis. There’s the Gleneagles body treatments (mine was the Highland Healer), Dr. Barbara Sturm facials, and Tata Harper or Grown Alchemist treatments.

Being given the gift voucher for a spa day, I could have chosen from a (short) selection of treatments, and this already included use of all the facilities, a two-course lunch in the Spa Café, and a herbal tea after my treatment.

Spa facilities to enjoy during your spa day/stay

The facilities here were wonderful, as was the whole experience. I was conscious that our stay (again, back in 2020 with lots of Covid restrictions, where there was no spa and for the pool you had to make a specific appointment time, which we actually couldn’t get) wasn’t the best, but I was keen to go back to the hotel and to try out the spa day gift. From the great arrival (I’d decided to take the train for ease, and was met with a complimentary pick-up from the train station, literally 5 minutes from the hotel), to the welcome at the spa reception, everything just went like a dream.

After a very quick consultation card, which I completed in one of the spa reception lounges (there seemed to be so many, which gave a wonderful relaxed, spacious ambience about the whole spa), I was then taken into the gents changing area, given my locker (with a spa robe, slippers and towel already there) and also shown around the whole thermal suite, the various lounges and relaxation/waiting spaces, as well as the Spa Café, where we would have lunch (‘Mrs’ TPT wasn’t doing the spa day, but did come and meet me for lunch). More on this later, but we both thought the food was excellent.

I asked about access to the pool, which was separate next door, and I was advised that I could just walk through to it (back out to the main [spa] reception area) in my robe. I did try this, albeit to get to the pool area you have to walk through, go up a staircase into the gents changing area there, to then go back down another staircase into the pools and thermal suite area. The spa area was an absolute haven compared to the swimming pool area - don’t get me wrong, this was still a luxury experience, but there was a bit of an air of the leisure centre about it, only by the number of people there and there being quite a few kids. Changing facilities

These were so well appointed and spacious. There was a great flow from the entrance with two luxurious locker areas (with vanity units and sinks), through to the shower area (three individual showers, though one was out of action when I was there), to the toilet and further vanity area, then it split that you could either go into the mens relaxation space (with snacks, water, and relaxation headphones) or through into the thermal suite. 

The spa treatment room

I was ready in the relaxation courtyard just before my treatment time (where there is fruit and water provided) and met by my therapist on time. My treatment room was just off from there - excellently appointed, with a shower and separate WC, a large treatment space with lots of storage and a very comfortable centrally-placed massage bed. I didn’t need this heated as I’d had all the thermal experiences beforehand, but the room was perfect temperature wise, good relaxing music, and though likely false, had the look of an illuminated window at one end.

The Highland Healer treatment - what was it like?

This was a good treatment choice, and very, very highly recommended. On going into the treatment room, I was invited to take a seat in a relaxing armchair, and then given the choice of two oils for the massage. Since Covid, my sense of smell has been severely restricted, so I could smell nothing from the relaxing option but did get a sense there was something there from the uplifting oil, so I went for that one.

There was a great set up on a small wooden tray with three containers (honey, sea salt, and kernels) for a foot scrub, all local ingredients. I was given the option of having this foot scrub and massage first, before going on to the main hot stone massage, or to have a longer hot stone massage. I went for a longer body massage.

It really was an excellent treatment, the massage was firm (and could have been firmer) and it was a great combination with the oil and then the use of hot stones. The bed was extremely comfortable and where usually I find a face hole can be quite uncomfortable and I’m looking forward to turning face up, but I didn't find this on this occasion. I didn’t quite fall asleep, though I became extremely relaxed, and before I knew it the massage was over and I was invited to sit up for some water. 

Food & Drink

My spa package had included a two-course lunch, and at first I thought that the Spa Café was actually one we’d been to before out in the main hotel, right in front of the spa reception. It turned out that this was the Garden Café, so the Spa Café was new to me, and located right in the spa itself. This meant it was a very comfortable lunch still in my robe, with most of the other diners doing the same. There was an excellent choice of a starter and main, three choices for each, and a perfect vegetarian option for me on each. 

I opted for the cauliflower tabbouleh with added halloumi to start (‘Mrs’ TPT the Scottish crab), followed by rigatoni arrabiata (fire-baked salmon too). There was a choice of healthy drinks, but also a small menu of wines, prosecco and champagne. Diet Coke wasn’t on the menu, but being his favourite, was available.

The Gleneagles Hotel: My review of the hotel

You can read my full hotel review here, but I will point out again (as it talks about in the review too), this was during Covid time in late 2020 and there was a huge impact by the restrictions being applied by the Scottish Government. This impacted the leisure facilities, timing of dining, no alcohol inside etc. In terms of the stay itself, it was a bit quirky with the room allocation and lack of hot water, but overall it’s absolutely somewhere I would go back to, and dining was amazing.

Despite the restrictions (no alcohol indoors, so no option to have a drink with dinner; and you had to have vacated the restaurants by 9pm) we had an incredible meal at Restaurant Andrew Fairlie. You can find my review of that here.
When I go back now and look at older reviews, I do find they look very dated as I’m now using a completely different look, and hopefully reviews have become a bit more informative, as well as looking better with more photography.

The Gleneagles Spa: The Highlights

There were so many highlights of this spa experience but here are just a few of the key points, which I hope you find a useful summary.

• Location - I don’t go many places by train, but it was so easy to get to (and quick) - a train from Edinburgh to Stirling, with a quick change and then only two stops on to Gleneagles Station itself. I hadn’t expected to get a complimentary pick up, but it was actually a really nice way to arrive at this majestic hotel.

• The spa welcome - quick, efficient and welcoming. I was changed and enjoying the thermal suite quickly after arrival.

• The thermal suite - excellent crystal steam room, great showers (though the Ice Rain button was definitely hot rain instead); loved the huge spa pool at the end which I had to myself.

• The treatment - excellently done, and just on the 80 minutes prompt.

• The inclusive lunch - food was excellent, and a really nice addition having a glass of prosecco to go with it.

• Such a wonderful environment, and a great reintroduction to the hotel.

Areas for improvement

I always like to go for a balanced review, and if there is anything I spot when having a spa experience that I think would have improved the visit, I’ll flag it here to be helpful.

• Really not much to say here, other than it would have been good to have a wet shorts bag (‘Mrs’ TPT always does like a changing room spinner, and they did have one of those)

• The changing room area was very warm (heated floor). It was really too warm, but equally the Scottish weather had just changed recently, from being quite cold, yet the day I was there it seemed to turn and be much warmer.

Final thoughts on The Gleneagles Spa, Scotland

The treatment at The Gleneagles Hotel itself hadn’t been exactly what ‘Mrs’ TPT had intended when he gave me the spa day voucher for my birthday, but even although it took almost a year to get this organised, it was worth the wait. Not having been able to experience the leisure facilities when staying there before, it was good to go back and try this, as it was to return to the hotel. After the wonderful spa experience and the incredible weather when we were there, it really made me wish we had been staying again. The spa treatment has made all the more focussed on organising a stay at The (Edinburgh) Townhouse too, to compare and contrast.

We loved the spa here, albeit the only thing that was slightly disappointing was the lack of relaxation space around the pool. There was the odd seat, but no recliners; just something that would have been in the space that was there, to relax after a treatment or just pass away some time. However, the facilities were excellent and we had the most amazing treatments there too. Even ‘Mrs’ The Private Traveller, who isn’t a huge spa fan, thought his treatment (an 80 minute Gentleman’s Facial including a back massage) was amazing.

Beauty & Fitness at The Savoy London Spa Review

This is a special retreat in the heart of London, and I knew on booking the hotel we had to also experience their magical spa.

Spa facilities to enjoy during your stay

There’s the central swimming pool in its own atrium / natural light, with quite a powerful jet if you want to try and swim against it. In each of the male and female changing areas is a sauna and steam room, as well as showers, lockers, vanity areas etc. and the two treatment rooms adjacent - one single and one a double suite. Either side of the pool are two fitness areas (PT sessions available, as is private yoga or Pilates, also available in room) with a range of cardio equipment and a full selection of weights etc.

The treatment selection now seems to have changed from when we were there, this menu now being split between Ritual Treatments, La-Eva Treatments, Natura Bisse Bespoke Facials, with additional treatments like Pregnancy Nurturing (massage), The Savoy Couple’s Massage, LED Light Therapy, a Soothing Scalp or Foot Massage, or an add on Express Facial.

If you’re more in the mood for fitness, you can hire a Personal Trainer for sessions, or take a private yoga or Pilates session either in the fitness areas or in your hotel room.

The Savoy Spa Review

Whenever I stay in a hotel with a spa, I always try and make sure I can fit in at least one treatment to try it out. We were both so impressed by the Savoy Spa, for so many reasons, and it was a wonderful addition to our weekend anniversary stay.

Getting into the spa was easy from our room, following the signs in what is a big sprawling old building, and when we arrived up from the stunning staircase into the spa, we were met with a welcome of hot tea, refreshing towel and some dates. Completing the necessary forms was easy using the spa iPads, and soon we were escorted through to the changing rooms to being our spa experience.

Changing facilities

Although slightly dated in design they were spacious and extremely well maintained/superbly clean. There was a large open central area with a big bench in the middle for changing, an en-suite WC, separate shower, lots of lockers (decent sized), large vanity area (extremely well supplied with toiletries including shaving foam, mouthwash, deodorant etc.) and lots of fluffy white towels. There was then the separate large steam room and sauna, the steam always being my preference. 

The spa treatment room

Although we had the option of both treatments together in the couple’s suite, I’d opted for separate this time, thinking it might be more relaxing for me having the full time for massage without hearing all of the goings on for ‘Mrs’ TPT’s facial. Both rooms were perfectly but simply appointed, with comfortable massage beds and, as you would expect from The Savoy, impeccable linens and towels. The accoutrements were by Aromatherapy Associates, where the key massage oils were featured in an elegant but simple display on one shelved wall.

Luxury Spa Treatments at Beauty & Fitness Savoy London

I am so complimentary about our treatments here, from booking through to execution, and we were left in such a state of bliss afterwards from two exceptional therapists. As you’ve probably already got the measure of, ‘Mrs’ TPT isn’t usually the most interested in anything to do with a spa, or effusive post-treatments but was very much on this occasion. Highly, highly recommended.

The Savoy London: My Review of the Hotel

We had booked through my affiliation with Classic Travel, and received the most amazing welcome — including an upgrade to a river-facing one-bedroom suite. The experience was magical from start to finish, and my only real (and minor) negative was the welcome in the Beaufort Bar, which came down to one disengaged staff member in an otherwise exceptional team.

Beauty & Fitness at The Savoy: The Highlights

There were so many highlights of my spa experience at The Savoy Spa, including:

• Although on one hand the poolside gym areas seemed to take up a lot of space (and not leaving much for loungers (see below) if you were looking for an exceptionally well appointed gym and studio space, this was it. 

• Booking was so easy - they were so responsive by email, to get our appointments booked well in advance of our stay.

• The welcome - very efficient registration through an iPad for the treatment details/preferences, plus nice hot tea and dates along with a scented refreshing towel.

• Our therapists - treatments carried out so expertly in wonderful surroundings.

• Cleanliness throughout - exactly what you would expect from a hotel the standard of the Savoy, but still absolutely worth mentioning.

Areas for improvement

I always like to go for a balanced review, and if there is anything I spot when having a spa experience that I think would have improved the visit, I’ll flag it here to be helpful.

• Loungers at the poolside - we went well in advance of our treatment start times thinking we could use the steam room/sauna/swim in advance of our massages later, by relaxing at the pool. While there were (I think) only four seats, they weren’t particularly conducive to relaxation. I know there wasn’t a lot of poolside space, there were areas where at least some recliners could be accommodated, but perhaps this isn’t something they want to encourage.

• While the changing facilities were excellent, and sparkling clean, they were a bit dated and I’m sure at some point they will be updated.

• Although missed originally, they adjusted without issue the 20% discount on spa treatments which came as part of our Virtuoso package.

Final Thoughts on The Savoy Spa, London

The Beauty & Fitness Spa at The Savoy is a wonderful complement to one of London’s most iconic hotels, offering excellent treatments in a refined, peaceful setting. While it may not be the kind of spa you’d spend an entire afternoon in — largely due to the lack of a dedicated poolside relaxation area — it’s a perfect option for a restorative treatment during a city break or staycation. With so much to explore in London, it’s a great way to unwind without losing precious time in the city.

I do love a traditional Thai massage, so when I had the chance to go and review the Thai Square Spa, just off London’s Trafalgar Square, I jumped at the chance. Although Thai Square Spa has been operating since 2010 (formerly in Covent Garden) it moved to this new site in Northumberland Street in 2016. There’s a large entrance off the street with a welcome desk, seating and a retail store; with all the treatments and therapies on the level below. I understand it used to be a Turkish bath, and the wet area below has been refurbished to the now Sen Space add-on for treatments.

Why choose Thai Square Spa for your treatment?

I was lucky enough to have been invited here, but it’s definitely somewhere that I would return to, to try out different and probably longer treatments. As you will read before, there is such an array of treatment options and packages, and you really could make a full day of it here.

Spa treatment selection at Thai Square Spa

Their website details all treatments and therapies in full, split into various categories and ranging in time lengths. There is a whole array of treatment options from body treatments (wraps, massage, traditional Thai massage - [clothed] etc.) as as well facial treatments, ritual therapies (Siamese Serenity, Definite Detox, or Body Revival), scalp and foot treatments, specialist maternity therapies, royal treatments (like the Golden Maharani facial), wet treatments (private herbal steam, soaks or a Vichy shower). There is then also a whole selection of packages, with everything from a 1hr 45min sampling selection, right through to a full-day spa package of 6 hours. 

Thai Square Spa Review

Such a great treatment overall, with an excellent therapist. I used to have a lot more traditional Thai massage (clothed) and then transitioned into having a mix of say 1 hour of traditional followed by an hour of hot oil massage. I then tended to find that I migrated more to just having the hot oil or deep tissue massage only. It was a great reminder here that the traditional Thai massage can be very therapeutic too.

Location

Thai Square Spa is only a few minutes walk away from Trafalgar Square, and easily serviced either the Tube to Embankment or Charing Cross. I took it to Embankment and walked up Northumberland Street, only to initially miss the entrance as I was engrossed in my phone. I then started following Google Maps on my phone, but that was wrongly directing me to Thai Square restaurant, on the opposite side of Trafalgar Square. Once I paid proper attention and got back to where I should have been, I then actually realised that I had looked to book treatments here before when staying at the luxurious Corinthia (Hotel) just opposite. As it turned out though, I ended up not having time, so I’m glad I finally got to experience a treatment at Thai Square Spa.

Changing facilities

On the entrance level there are separate changing rooms for both men and women. In bright red tiles and literally sparkling clean, there were two large walk-in showers, a sink, and a wall of lockers. After completing a brief form at reception of any medical indications, I was taken through to the changing rooms and given a set of lightweight clothing to wear during the massage. There was a cotton top and drawstring cotton trousers, as well as there being a basket of flip flops for you to help yourself. There were decent sized lockers to store clothing and personal belongings, all easy to operate with a four-digit code. Toilets were separate in the corridor leading to the changing rooms.

What was the spa treatment room like?

After changing, I made my way downstairs and was just about to get myself seated in one of two relaxation spaces, when my therapist came out to meet me. I was offered some tea or water, which we took into one of the treatment rooms. I sat on the bed and drank tea, while the therapist performed a foot wash. She checked in with me about the temperature of the rooms, which I thought was fine to begin with, then on starting the treatment I realised I was getting a bit hot. I just mentioned if the room could be a bit cooler, and right away she adjusted the air conditioning and it was much more pleasant.

I can often find lying face down on a massage bed quite uncomfortable, depending on the positioning and set up of a face hole, but actually on these beds there was no hole but the therapist had set up a folded towel on which to rest my chin, and another for me to rest my forehead, so that my nose was clear in the middle. It was actually extremely comfortable this way.

What was my treatment like at Thai Square Spa?

Really excellent. The therapist asked how strong I would like the massage to be, I normally like strong pressure. It does, of course, all depend on how strong the therapist is, so I opted for a medium/firm pressure, which was really good. I lay on my front while my back was massaged with pressure-point techniques too, and it also included a lot of stretching which I found really beneficial. The hour passed quickly, but she was able to cover full body and afterwards I felt really relaxed, but also like I had had a good stretching session too.

• Location - very easy to get, centrally located

• Warm welcome at reception, easy form to complete

• Good changing facilities, exceptionally clean

• Great introduction from therapist explaining the treatment, and so professionally and expertly carried out

• Good relaxation areas afterwards

• I really don’t think there is anything I could add here. From the warm welcome, the treatment and excellent therapist, to the sparkling clean facilities; all was excellent.

Final thoughts on Thai Square Spa

With so many other treatments available, and having the option to add on the private Sen Space, or have a treatment in the rare Salt House therapy room, means I definitely want to go back again.

What are the best treatments at The Beaumont Spa?

I think it would be fair to say that with a spa of this quality, you couldn’t go wrong with any treatment. My hot stone massage was amazing and I felt so relaxed afterwards. If I’d been staying longer I definitely would have added on a full hammam treatment, maybe added in a facial and I always love having reflexology.

What was the spa treatment room like?

No surprise, excellent. Beautifully appointed with a super-comfortable massage bed and a very simple but surprisingly comfortable face rest. Temperature was perfect as was the relaxing music, and was simply designed but so in keeping with the rest of the spa, similar tones and style.

My treatment was excellent, a really great therapist and performed so expertly. The hour passed quickly, but I felt so relaxed afterwards and there were regular (but not too frequent) check-ins about massage pressure, room temperature and the music level etc. A really fantastic treatment and left with a real feeling of relaxation afterwards, where I then spent some time in the thermal suite area.

Spa facilities to enjoy during your stay

You entered the spa from the level below reception, down an amazing staircase with the incredible Art Deco artwork and style, before going through chrome and glass doors polished to perfection. There was a small reception area adjacent to the large, very well-equipped, gymnasium and where I completed a short questionnaire about the treatment. This main area also had the hair salon and the men’s grooming suite. Down a white tiled corridor were ladies and gents changing rooms, then entry into the thermal suite, which you would pass through to get to the treatment rooms.

The thermal suite had a sauna, steam room, a cold plunge pool and automatic ice dispenser to cool down between heat treatments. Apart from the wooden sauna, the whole room was designed in the similar Art Deco style - small white mosaic tiles interspersed with black mosaic designs, chrome fittings, white leather and chrome recliners, with chrome and glass tables and a selection of magazines to read. A chrome and glass trolley had chilled water.

Changing facilities

Although quite small, like everything within the spa (and indeed the hotel itself) they were fitted out to the highest of luxury standards, but still very in keeping with that traditional Art Deco historic vibe. There were jade green lacquered doors, tobacco leather ottomans, marble and gleaming chrome; not to mention a copious amount of pristine white fluffy towels and excellent toiletries in the showers and for hand wash use by D.R. Harris & Co. If you’d forgotten anything else, they would have it either in the changing rooms themselves (like deodorant, mouthwash, hand cream, body lotion etc. or things like combs, razors, shaving foam etc. was available from the spa reception).

In each locker there was a pure white waffle robe (nice, but the ones in the bedrooms and suites were even better - towelling inside, but a beautiful cotton on the outside). This was also set out with a pair of sandals for use in the spa, disposable underwear for the treatment and a shower cap.

As well as the massage I had, with hot stones, a really luxurious and therapeutic treatment, there was a whole array of other massages from everything to just feet/reflexology, back neck and shoulders, to full body, pregnancy, deep tissue, as well as those incorporating either a scrub or a scrub, wrap and facial too. There was a whole selection of facials by OSKIA, not to mention reflexology (traditional feet specialist treatments but facial reflexology too by Michelle Bowman or there was the Hammam specialist treatments in the Beaumont's authentic and traditional full body hammam. 
This ritual starts in the steam room before moving to the mosaic-walled hammam room with its warmed marble hammam table for a cleanse with savon noir, followed by an exfoliation with kessa scrub, a rassoul body and hair cleanse, a nourishing treatment or massage, and a final rest to relieve any remaining stress. I’ve had a few of these treatments elsewhere recently (The Saxon in Johannesburg South Africa, The Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square London, and also at The Bürgenstock Resort in Switzerland). Definitely something for me to try on the next visit to The Beaumont, I will definitely be back.

The Beaumont Hotel: My review of the luxury hotel

This was one of my favourite London hotel stays - there are quite a few hotels that I really love already, and The Beaumont has definitely been added to this list. Smaller and more intimate perhaps than some others we would stay at, but being such an Agatha Christie fan and of the Art Deco period, The Beaumont Hotel for me was a really special experience. The rooms were phenomenal, such attention to detail and great service, with a choice of two bars and I had a great dinner in their Colony Grill restaurant. Not only was there a special vegetarian menu, the make-your-own ice cream bespoke sundae at the end of the meal was a treat to behold.

By the fact that I love a spa treatment so much, I usually have high expectations but when somewhere like the Beaumont, you know from the off that you’re not going to be disappointed. So many highlights, but here are some of the major ones:

• Welcome - one level below reception, the whole hotel is steeped in Art Deco wonder. The spa was no different, so beautifully designed.

• Cleanliness - probably transcended cleanliness in fact, as everything in the entire spa was literally gleaming.

• Lovely welcome at reception, which continued through to the introduction to my therapist and a really great treatment.

• Not a huge spa, but had everything you could want from a boutique hotel like this and the thermal suite was good before or after your treatment.

• Good choice of treatments, and great having the on site men’s grooming room too.

Areas for improvement

I’m not saying I’m a specialist, but I do have a lot of treatments and therapies at a lot of different spas all across the world, so it’s always hard to not compare and contrast, or have any issues highlighted when something was better elsewhere, or something fails to live up to expectation.

• Very hard to find anything to say negatively here, but probably the only thing was there was only one shower in the gents changing facilities, but it’s a relatively small bespoke spa, so you wouldn’t be expecting vast changing areas either.

Final thoughts on the Beaumont Spa at The Beaumont Hotel

I’ve been to many luxury London hotels with spas, and The Beaumont is definitely getting added to the list of my favourites. Not the biggest or most extensive spa area, compared to say the likes of the Hotel Café Royal, Landmark or The Langham; but it is so perfectly suited to the hotel style and size.

What are the best treatments at the Bürgenstock Alpine Spa?

If I had had a longer stay I would have tried out more, but here are some of the treatments I enjoyed during my visit to the Alpine Spa.

My first treatment - AMRA Men’s Meteorite Body Ritual

Cost - CHF570 (about £510 , €600 or $650)

Time - 2 hours

Waewdee was an excellent therapist, and explained from the outset what the treatment involved. First off I was given a choice of disposable mens underwear, one shorts style and one a thong. I normally find with the briefs style that I can never work out what’s front or back, but I went for the shorts which were actually quite big. The thong, which allowed for full frontal cover but pretty much nothing else probably would have been the better option for a treatment like this.

Coming from the Alpine Spa area anyway in one of their supersoft grey spa robes (with hood) it was a quick change into the disposable underwear and Waewdee then showed me where to lie on the Vichy shower type bed. It was super comfortable, like floating on a waterbed, and first  my body was cleansed and massaged all over with the water jets. I was then going to be encased on the bed for a personal steam experience. Once Waewdee had cleansed and rinsed, she then pulled a plastic-style sheet over where I was lying to create the steam chamber. I was left for about 10 minutes, all very comfortable and though the steam was hot, it was in no way uncomfortable.

The process was then repeated but this time instead of a cleanse she used a scrub, then rinse, then another steam session. Once that was complete I was invited to take a shower (where there was a special gel to cleanse), before drying and this time I tried the other disposable underwear choice, the thong which I thought would be better for the massage. I was then taken to another treatment room literally across the corridor for the next part of the treatment, an all-over massage. This was excellent too, pressure just right and I felt so relaxed afterwards. Here a serum was applied, before using an oil for the massage itself.

What was the spa treatment room like?

Like the entire resort, as you’d expect the treatment rooms were exceptional - the style, fittings, quality, lighting and presentation were all amazing. The room with the Vichy Shower (though I don’t think it was actually Vichy) but certainly a waterbed with the full-length body waterjets was just off the VIP waiting area and the spa treatment reception desk (the main spa reception was much bigger and in a different location). It was beautifully tiled on walls and floor, neutral but relaxing colours and very spacious. Near the entrance door was the private en-suite toilet and large walk-in shower, in the main room itself there was a large vanity unit with sink for the therapist and lots of storage space, a stool and a couple of large plants at the back.

Once I moved across the hallway to the massage room, this was similar in size and set up, albeit had a large picture window with the incredible view of the lake and surrounding landscape. The bed, as I realised when I had my second massage, had moveable armrest sections, so that rather than, when lying face down, having your arms by your side or dangling over the edge of the bed, you could have them resting either side of your head but lower down than the bed itself. The bed was super comfortable and, surprisingly as I often don’t find the section for your face to protrude through very comfortable, despite this looking extremely simple with just an oval hole which was surrounded by a soft folded towel, it was the perfect position and relaxing.

My second treatment - Dr. Barbara Strum Men’s Facial

Cost - CHF270 (about £240 , €280 or $300)

Time - 60 minutes

I was met again in the waiting lounge by Suzana, who was yet another excellent therapist. I think it was so clear with the standard overall in the spa, that they wouldn’t have any therapist who wasn’t an expert in their respective fields. I normally have only Environ (South Africa) facials with that being my skincare brand of choice, but equally I’ve also come across the Dr. Barbara Strum brand in a few high-end hotel spas already, and had always wanted to try one out.

As Suzana explained, this was going to be quite a traditional facial and it was (the Environ they use an electro-sonic DF machine) but really excellent. My skin went through so many stages of cleanse, tone, moisturise and finished with a relaxing facial and neck/shoulder massage. Fantastic treatment and excellent therapist in wonderful surroundings. Highly recommended.

What was the spa treatment room like?

With the spa being over three (vast) floors, this time I was taken from the VIP waiting area through the same treatment corridor as before but then up a staircase to the level above where they had most of the (specifically beauty) treatment rooms. On the way I passed some of the individually named private spa suites, these are available at extra cost. The Private Spa is an exclusive VIP experience - a luxury setting with your own private sauna, jacuzzi, treatment room and lounge area with of course views over Lake Lucerne.

On the level above, I was then shown into a beauty room, slightly smaller than downstairs but again beautifully fitted out with the same stunning view from a window overlooking the lake. The bed was super comfortable, but obviously with it being a face it was designed to be face up only and the appropriate brighter lighting.

My third treatment - KOS Paris Full Body Invigorating Massage

Cost - CHF380 (about £340 , €400 or $430)

Time - 90 minutes

After a morning out visiting nearby Lucerne (great being able to take the funicular down again to meet the resort’s catamaran), I came back at lunchtime to enjoy the facilities of the Alpine Spa (by this point I was hooked on the aroma steam room and the outdoor eco pool in the naturist section of the spa) before having the body massage later in the afternoon, before dinner.

Mari met me in what was rapidly becoming a very favourite and familiar place, the VIP waiting space , where I would meet previous therapists and in particular the man who did my first treatment in the Waldhotel Spa, who was always so friendly and would ask how I was getting on. I was then taken to a treatment room on the same level as before, again with the spectacular lake views. The massage room was similar to where I had finished the AMRA treatment, again so comfortable and beautifully kitted out, with the same relaxing bed with what seemed like all possible adjustment positions.

There was choice of KOS Paris oils, which Mari was going to let me smell the work out which my favourite was, as well as explain the ingredients (and benefits) of each, but with my sense of smell having been obliterated by Covid back in 2021 and never really returning, I do find it near impossible now to detect differences (or indeed any fragrance) from essential oils. I was assured by Mari that a good choice would be the eucalyptus and pine KOS oil, still getting the benefits regardless of whether I could smell or not!

I first lay face down, with my arms resting to the side on the heated bed, while the therapist (who had asked for any areas of concern or an areas to have primary focus) massaged by back so expertly - the perfect balance of pressure and tension relief yet relaxing and nourishing at the same time. Once my back had been thoroughly released, and on each section Mari first used the massage oil, then it was legs before turning over to have more focus on my front and neck and shoulder area. As well as just massage release, there was a fair amount of joint manipulation and flexibility, finishing last with my arms being massaged all over.

Sadly my last treatment at Bürgenstock, but like all others, so expertly put together and executed.

What was the spa treatment room like?

Mari met me in what was rapidly becoming a very favourite and familiar place, the VIP waiting space , where I would meet previous therapists and in particular the man who did my first treatment in the Waldhotel Spa, who was always so friendly and would ask how I was getting on. I was then taken to a treatment room on the same level as before, again with the spectacular lake views. The massage room was similar to where I had finished the AMRA treatment, again so comfortable and beautifully kitted out, with the same relaxing bed with what seemed like all possible adjustment positions.

This has to be one of my all-time favourite spas visited to date (and I have been to many, many which I felt were exceptional). The resort was a wonderful combination of history with modern, the stunning views and on reading that the resort had taken 9 years and the princely sum of CHF 550m (about $630m or £500m) to redevelop, it was clear to see where this money was spent, and that it had been spent so well on creating such an intoxicating environment.

Spa facilities to enjoy during your stay

You entered the spa (through the hotel) from the 4th floor of the Contemporary building, where a glass box walkway linked the two buildings together. Off that corridor before you entered the spa itself was a huge gym, with a main area filled with all high-tech gym and fitness equipment, then a separate (again huge) room off to one side for more functional training and PT and on the other an open balcony area with outdoor spin bikes overlooking the most spectacular alpine views.

There was then the main spa reception with lots of seating areas and a real log fire (not on when I was there in August) which would be amazing as a winter arrival. Here you were provided with an electronic wristband that would give you access to the changing facilities, and if you needed one a spa robe. Some guests would come from their rooms in the hotel in their room’s robe (which were white) and I probably would have done that too if I’d stayed in the Contemporary Wing, but with being in the Heritage Wing this would have meant a bit of a walk and passing through the main reception too.

I’ll review the changing facilities later, but in terms of spa facilities these were absolutely incredible. On the same floor as the mens and ladies changing rooms (and some of the treatment rooms, VIP waiting area and the spa boutique) there is also both the main indoor pool which is surrounded on two sides by the outside spa infinity pool. This is such an Instragramable view, but I’m glad there was specific photography and kids times, to allow more privacy at others. I’m just not too sure how rigorously these photography times would be observed though.

Surrounding the indoor pool, on different levels and on an outside deck too were relaxation loungers. It was good to see signs asking guests not to reserve loungers unless using them, albeit there were dozens of them as so much relaxation space has been built in. As well as there being copious amounts of fresh towels throughout the spa, there were also lots of hanging spaces for your robe. Not bringing one from the room, I was always provided with a spa one - amazing dark grey and so soft, with a hood - a really great robe!

On the level below the main swimming pools, either accessible by lift or down a stunning staircase with a running wall of water on one side, you would access the thermal floor. There were so many different heat or cold experiences, too many to list them all but what was consistent was perfect cleanliness, supreme organisation and layout with an attention to detail that was clearly second to none, and just such a perfect ambience of the amount of facilities balanced out with so much space too, whether this was just vacant (corridor/flow) space or relaxation space mainly with stunning exterior views.

In the main area there was also a refreshment station, not only did this have a choice of waters, there was also a choice of tea, with a selection of fresh fruit pieces, dried fruits, nuts etc. Surrounding this was a (huge) floating bath (so atmospheric), napshells (for taking a nap), an infra-red (two-person) cabin, a Hammam, a (ladies only) sauna one of many shower areas.

There was then a large separate area which was meant to be clothing-free/naturist. This again was hugely spacious with lots of sunken pools of differing temperatures (some with jets and some Japanese style just for soaking), as well as an aroma sauna, panoramic glass-fronted on two sides sauna (one-way glass for privacy though), a huge steam room and my favourites after the hot steam was the inside large cold plunge pool before venturing out (nude) to the exterior eco pool. This was left as a natural temperature (cold to begin with, but you got used to it) with the most exceptional views of the Contemporary Wing hotel building and out to the lake view below. Natural reeds had been planted into the sides of the pool, so it really did feel natural to be out there.

Throughout the whole spa area, as I said the design was incredible, but there was such a good mix of relaxation and treatment space, some extremely well lit and some areas more atmospherically kept darker. There were always lots of towels and cloths to wear for privacy in this area, but although the signage was so clear (visually and in two languages, German and English) I’d say at least half of the guests ignored the naturist part and just wore swimming attire throughout.

Changing facilities

Once you were granted access with your private coded wristband, it was self-evident that no lack of resources had been invested in even the changing facilities. I assume, though only seeing the male side, that the female section would be a mirror image. There was a large vanity area with stools and a full-width mirror, with everything you might need, hair dryers etc. and what is always a bug-bear of ‘Mrs’ ThePrivateTraveller if a changing rooms doesn’t have one, a swimsuit spinner to dry off your togs!

There were then two large changing areas with electronic lockers, all so perfectly clean and well maintained with always a fresh pair of spa slippers and a branded drawstring bag for your wet swimsuit. Lockers were controlled by the same entry wristband to lock and unlock, all you had to do was to remember which numbered one you had used. There was then a large shower area with a number of individual shower suites, all with a dry area and bench, before going into the large rainfall shower itself. Stainless steel bottles held shampoo, conditioner and shower gels (body lotion was out on the vanity area). There were loads of towels, as there was in various stations through the whole spa area.

There was such a good choice and the brands they feature are DR Burgener, Biologique Recherche, Dr. Barbara Sturm Molecular Cosmetics, AMRA, 111SKIN, and KOS Paris).

From massage and facials, to hand or feet treatments, hair, beauty or so many options for just relaxation, the Alpine Spa has it all.

The Bürgenstock Resort: My review of the luxury hotel

This was such an exceptional hotel, well really in fact what felt like a choice of three options - Contemporary or Heritage at The Bürgenstock Hotel (both Leading Hotels of the World) or the Waldhotel just a couple of minutes away. I had initially thought I’d booked the Contemporary Wing, but in actual fact I was located in the former Palace Hotel building, now seamlessly linked into the overall hotel complex, and indeed this is where I had booked.

It’s a good chance to go back another time, and then I think I would try staying in the Contemporary part for a different experience. Service was exemplary throughout, and there was such a phenomenal selection of food and drink options, as well as so many things to do or see apart from the Spa facilities. Alpine Spa, Bürgenstock Resort: The Highlights

• Where to start, this spa at 10,000sq m (or 110,000sq ft) was just vast but so exceptional.

• The panoramic glass walled sauna - one-way glass so privacy assured (it’s clothes off)

• Loved the Eco pool, where you could swim au naturel (and nice and cool after the hot steam or saunas) - incredible views across the lake too

• The infinity pool on the main level - such an experience to lie in warm bubbles with that Lake Lucerne view

• Treatments - what a selection and so well executed

• Relaxation space - so many options throughout both floors of the spa, again all with amazing views

• Refreshment area - what a choice of teas, waters and snacks (dried and fresh fruit, nuts etc)

• Cleanliness - for such a huge facility with a decent amount of traffic, every area was always kept pristine

• The spa robes - lovely colour and comfort

• Did I mention the views across the lakes and to the mountains behind?

Areas for improvement

• Nude sauna area - while the signage was apparently (to me) very obvious that this should be swimwear free (with areas for leaving your trunks/suits) I’d say probably more than half of guests didn’t participate.

• It’s a small thing, but I had expected a bit more advance help with formulating a treatment plan for my stay. This didn’t happen, but it was more a case of bookings just being processed.

Final thoughts on the Alpine Spa at The Bürgenstock Resort

I had been so looking forward to coming here and it did not disappoint in any way. The spa has become one of my all-time favourites and I would recommend it to anyone. Coupled with the private hotel funicular and their lake catamaran, not to mention the outstanding accommodations and delicious restaurant options, this isn’t a health resort (too many G&T’s and Moets for that) but it is a wonderful Leading Hotel of the World and I want to go back.

Why choose Chile for a spa break?

This has been a long-awaited trip to Chile (probably now almost four years since first booking), with Covid cancellations and restrictions, but it has absolutely not disappointed. This Leading Hotels of the World property was an obvious choice for our stay in the Atacama Desert, and having the Puri Spa was a major attraction. It’s the first of two Nayara Resorts we’re staying at on the trip too (I’ve had my eye on them for some time in Costa Rica); after a brief stop back in Santiago (Pirque to be exact) we fly to Easter Island and Nayara Hangaroa.

Spa facilities to enjoy during your stay

There was no gym here at the hotel, but with all the activities and trips nearby (the option of either a full-day or two half-day excursions with their ‘Full Experience’ program) there is no shortage of exercise options in the natural environment.

The spa building itself (great design and partially sunken into the landscape) housed the treatment rooms, changing facilities, a small reception and an outdoor (but shaded) relaxation area with outdoor Scottish Showers. Inside, side by side was both a sauna and steam room - I tend not to use saunas (the infra-red ones seem ok for some reason) as they give me headaches, but the steam room was great, albeit it seemed to get off to a slow start, just spluttering out hot water. Once it kicked in though, it was very effective and a good pre-treatment before the deep tissue massage.

Above the spa building itself was a roof terrace area, where a tented cabana was also used as outside treatment areas too. Next to the spa was the Puri Bar, which served a selection of drinks (everything from water to alcohol, soft drinks and cocktails) as well as food. Rather than having a full lunch in the restaurant every day (which was included in our package) we would often come here for a snack lunch instead. Surrounding the bar area (and the spa itself) were 6 separate pool areas, to use for relaxation at any time either to swim or sunbathe. I did wonder in advance of visiting the hotel why there were so many, but in actual fact it was a great idea having more individual areas rather than one bigger pool and same sun deck for everyone.

At the front, slightly elevated was a private jacuzzi area - outside and open-air, but you could reserve this for an hour per stay. I’d been looking forward to the outside mineral baths (in a separate area of the resort) but these were out of action, I assume under reconstruction/refurbishment or just hadn’t reopened post Covid.

Spa treatment selection at Puri Spa

The treatments at Puri Spa are grouped according to the four ancestral elements - fire, water, earth and air.

Using sounds, aromas and local artisanal organic products this creates an environment where guests can relax and disconnect. I went for the deep tissue massage, 60 minutes as opposed to the shorter 40 minute option on the first time available. With very limited availability, we thought we were having treatments back to back; one at 6pm and then another at 7pm but as it turned out both ‘Mrs’ The Private Traveller and I were taken together at 6pm in the couples treatment room with a jacuzzi for afterwards.

I was able to book again for a couple of days after, this time I opted for the hour’s reflexology followed by a 30 minute Cranium massage. ‘Mrs’ The Private Traveller hates reflexology so he didn’t opt for the reflexology session, but did join again in the couple’s treatment room once I was having the head massage.

Puri Spa Review

So, without further ado let us dive into the nitty gritty of the Puri Spa, an excellent luxury spa break option in Chile.

In the following sections I'll describe every part of the Luxury Spa experienced at Puri Spa, including the changing facilities, the treatment room, the types of spa treatments involved and my own personal highlights and advice. Let us see why the Puri Spa stands out as an ideal luxury spa break in Chile.

Changing facilities

Small, but extremely nice with separate facilities for both men and women. Designed with dark/black slate walls and floor, there was a vanity area, locker area, toilets and a couple of rain shower glass cubicles. As with everywhere in the resort, the spa was no exception, everything was spotless.

The spa treatment room

The main (double/couples) treatment room was on the lower ground floor at the back, with huge windows onto a rock garden at the rear. Completely private once the blinds were down, as it backed onto the outside relaxation area, this again was quite dark on the inside with dark walls and floor, but bright looking out onto the enclosed area outside (completely private).

There was a huge jacuzzi at the rear of the room, which we used after the massages, two double massage beds and a sofa etc.

Luxury Spa Treatments at the Puri Spa

Great treatments - the massage therapists were both excellent during the two sessions I had; the deep tissue was indeed therapeutic and good muscle release, as was the reflexology and cranium session a couple of days after. During the cranium massage, it wasn’t necessarily just a head massage (albeit they did at one point also use one of the spidery metal tools to massage points over the skull, not sure what they’re officially called!) but also covering the back and shoulders too, which was great.

Chile Hotel: My review of the Nayara Alto Atacama

You can read my full hotel review on the website. We really loved our stay, and yet again as a member of Leading Hotels of the World, this property did not disappoint. It was so easy to get to Nayara Alto Atacama - there are multiple flights a day with LATAM Airlines - you fly to Calama [CJC] airport then it’s only about an hour and 15 minutes to the resort. With only 32 rooms (Catarpe) and 10 (Tilo) suites; it’s a small intimate resort so never felt busy, albeit it was full during our time there. There are so many activities to take part in, from walks through mountain valleys, a trip to the Geysers Del Tatio or to the salt flats with flamingos; these were all included in our package and the guides/transport were all excellent. 

Puri Spa: The Highlights

• Loved the resort and the couple’s massage suite was excellent. 

• Good therapists and treatments.

• Steam room was slow to get going, but once it did it was very effective and even I could get the strength of the eucalyptus fragrance (lost sense of smell during Covid).

Areas for improvement

• It was hard to get appointments, that’s really the only thing I would say was negative. Even when we thought we were making confirmed bookings at reception, these still only seemed to be provisional and perhaps confirmation could have been clearer and easier. Also not sure why we were being advised that couple treatments would be back to back as opposed to together, when in fact we were actually taken together which was ideal.

• Was disappointing the thermal baths were out of action; I’d been looking forward to trying these.

Final thoughts on the Puri Spa in Chile

I’ve enjoyed every part of our Chile trip so far, though it has been hard to get spa appointments pretty much at every hotel we’ve stayed at, and indeed at our first hotel in Santiago (The Singular) we weren’t able to get a treatment at all.

It hasn’t spoiled our trip though (as much as I love spa treatments) and Chile has been a great new country, and a set of experiences. From a busy city centre like Santiago, to the cooler mountainous weather of Patagonia and then onto the desert climate here at Nayara Alto Atacama; I’ve loved it all - the hotels, the scenery, the people.

Spa facilities to enjoy during your stay

As well as all the treatments under the different journeys, there are all separate beauty treatments for both men and women, and a separate beauty salon adjacent in the grounds. Not to mention the in-spa yoga and meditation, gym and fitness/movement studio (spin classes available, wellness restaurant (open from 11am to 7pm daily), a boutique and apothecary. There is also a hydrotherapy circuit offering a wide array of different water treatments, all complimentary except the floatarium. For both men and women separate, as part of the changing facilities, there is a steam room, sauna, varying pools with water massage jets and of different temperatures, outside drench and rain showers (cold water only) as well as more luxurious indoor shower suites by Porcelanosa NK with huge overhead rain showers.

Spa treatment selection at Chablé Yucatán, Mexico

The spa menu is broken up into three different journeys or classes of treatments, these being:

1. Fountain of Youth 

2. Tree of Life

3. Heaven on Earth

For my initial treatments I blended the 90 minute Nirvana Stress-Relief massage followed by an additional 30 minutes for the Hierbabuena Foot Therapy, mixing both the Fountain of Youth and Heaven on Earth journeys. There was such a good choice of treatments in each of the journeys so it was difficult to choose, but staying here for 6 days I know I will have the option to try others. I’ve already booked for another 90 minute Flow of Tide Lymphatic Drainage Massage and am very tempted by the Forest Detox Massage too.

Chablé Yucatan Spa Review

So, without further ado let us dive into the nitty gritty of the the Spa at Chablé Yucatan, an excellent luxury spa break option in Mexico.

In the following sections I'll describe every part of the Luxury Spa experienced at Chablé Yucatan, including the changing facilities, the treatment room, the types of spa treatments involved and my own personal highlights and advice. Let us see why the Chablé Yucatan Spa stands out as an ideal luxury spa break in Mexico.

Changing facilities

There was both a male and female side of the changing rooms, but these weren’t just any ordinary changing rooms but a matching suite of rooms and hydrotherapy circuits. Through the massive wooden entrance door you first entered into a huge spacious lounge area, with a panoramic full wall width window onto the garden. There were lots of comfortable seating areas to relax before or after a treatment, and the option of mineral water or the water of the day. From here there were separate toilets, all perfectly maintained, a bar/serving area which didn’t seem to be in use, and then a walk through a wide marble and wood lined corridor to a changing area itself, here on one wall there were various spacious lockers, all complete with a linen robe, slippers, towel and bath matt. There were sinks too with toiletries and towels provided and a massive natural tree log for seating. From here, next stop was another wet area with more sinks and toiletries, as many large white cotton towels as you could possibly need and three large shower suites, all wood lined and spacious enough for both a huge overhead rain shower but a small seated area too supplied with extra towels and another personal bath mat.

From this shower wet area you then went through glass doors into an open-air courtyard, this housed the experience showers, the steam room (towels and body scrub provided), a sauna and the amazing floatation pool. I must say when I initially saw there was a floatation option in the spa, I (wrongly) assumed it would be an egg-style pod as I’ve used elsewhere but absolutely not, this was a stone floatation pool like no other. Outside in a garden area there were three sunken pools, either side a jacuzzi style (one warmer and one cooler) and in the middle a cold plunge pool. The more temperate tub had four different jetted areas, one for the lower half, one for the back, one for the neck and the last for your ankles and calves. While we were relaxing after the steam bath, the spa butler brought us fresh towels and a special drink to cool down. All in all, it must be one of the most luxurious changing facilities, a real highlight and that’s just the changing rooms, never mind the rest of the spa!

The spa treatment room

There is a spa suite and double spa suite as well as 12 individual spa cabins, all overlooking the central cenote. The main spa building (which also houses a pool and sun deck) and incorporates all the changing and hydrotherapy circuits then leads you to pass all the treatment cabanas from a wooden decked walkway right through and down to a cenote-side yoga and meditation deck. On the way, you also pass another outdoor large jacuzzi pool with loungers and showers. My first treatment was in one of the first cabanas, nearest the main spa but was so perfectly quiet and beautifully appointed. After being given a Mayan blessing by my therapist before going to the spa suite, once I was in the wood lined cabin my eyes were immediately drawn to the small balcony area and to the view of the cenote. First, my feet were scrubbed and washed sitting on the small terrace, and I was given a drink of cacao to enjoy before my treatment. Although I didn’t need to use it, there was also a wood-lined shower area screened by a bright blue Mexican beaded curtain, then in the cabin itself was a very comfortable single massage bed adorned with a Mexican blanket. There was a separate WC and a decent sized sink area for the therapist. The music was relaxing, and as nice as it was to enjoy the initial natural breeze on the balcony, it was also nice for the treatment itself to have the balcony door closed to fully appreciate the air conditioning.

Luxury Spa Treatments at the Chablé Yucatan Spa

The therapist was great, from the Mayan welcome to ensuring that I was comfortable throughout the treatment, as was her right pressure. We started off with the Nirvana stress-relief massage; face down and each side of the body was massaged in turn with oil. The pressure was excellent and I could feel the muscles being worked and relaxed, in a rhythmic and circular motion. From there, my back was then given particular attention before turning over onto my front to have my sides down again. As well as the oil massage, there were also elements of stretching of the arms and then some head/neck massage too. After the full 90 minutes, we then moved onto the herbal foot therapy, where each calf and foot were worked on, and it must have been at this point that I started to drift off into a snooze. The treatment finished with three chimes and I was brought back to consciousness.

Chablé Yucatan Mexico: My review of the hotel

I will be posting a full detailed hotel review, but this 41 casita property definitely has the wow factor. It’s in a great location less than a 30 minute drive away from Merida International Airport, on the northwest side of the Yucatán peninsula, in the north east of Mexico. All casitas are located throughout the vast grounds, surrounded by palm foliage for complete seclusion. In contrast to some of the traditional Mayan buildings which form the reception building, main hacienda house among others throughout the grounds, the casitas are modern and spacious both indoor and out. As well as there being a huge private terrace at the front with decent sized heated pool (with overhanging hammock) and a shaded seated terrace for morning tea, the casita/villa itself has everything you could possibly want with a huge open-plan bedroom/living/office space with a separate large dressing area and a vast bathroom suite (twin sinks on a massive vanity unit surrounded by glass to the jungle, twin indoor and separate outside showers, seating and separate WC).

If you can tear yourself away from the luxurious casitas (think air-conditioned cool with chique modern meets traditional designs of natural woods and stone, and every modern convenience like a Nespresso coffee machine, kettle for tea, fast Wifi, complimentary minibar supplied daily with Coke/Diet Coke/Coconut water/Beer etc.) then the rest of the resort has more to offer. Apart from the vast spa (which I think has to be one of my favourites in the world), there are two restaurants as well as the spa wellness one (one fine dining and the other an all-day by the pool restaurant), a dedicated separate building for a Cigar bar (great gins too and you don’t have to have a cigar) at Sikar, tennis courts, a wellness golf course, shop etc.

Chablé Yucatan Spa: The Highlights

• Where to start - the spa design, location, the cenote, treatments, facilities, service; all just phenomenal.

• The entire spa, as was the resort in general, was literally sparkling clean.

Areas for improvement

• In terms of the spa I really don’t think there is anything I can say here. Very minor and is only personal preference, but perhaps an earlier morning yoga class rather than 8am to be able to take advantage of some of the other fitness classes on offer too.

• I wish I had known about the Spa Suite in advance, with it’s extra facilities and VIP amenities. Although at extra cost, I would have liked to try this but only asked what it actually was the evening before we were leaving. Initially I’d assumed it was just the same as a double treatment room.

Final Thoughts on Chablé Yucatán, Mexico

The spa at Chablé Yucatán is, without question, one of the most exceptional I’ve experienced. Set around a natural cenote, the entire wellness space has been beautifully and thoughtfully integrated into the surrounding jungle. From morning yoga with Clarisa on the cenote-side esplanade to the guided hydrotherapy circuit and indulgent treatments in private spa cabins, every detail is designed to restore and inspire. Even the wellness café strikes the perfect balance — think fresh, nourishing dishes paired with a cheeky cocktail if you choose.

If this is anything to go by, I can’t wait to experience the next Chablé spa at their beachside retreat, Chablé Maroma.

The Londoner has been on my go-to list since I knew it was opening, so we booked as soon as we could travel to London. It certainly did not disappoint. The hotel (super-boutique as it’s described) is a wonderful collection of different spaces, and a real focus for me was The Retreat. This wellness floor on level -4 is an amazing feature of the hotel, and really one of London’s best. I recently wrote an article for Travel & Spa Magazine on luxury London hotels with underground or subterranean spas, and The Londoner featured highly within that top five.

Treatment selection

There is a great selection of treatments from facials by Omorovicza, massages by Ila (broken down into a choice of Invigorating, Deep Tissue, Relaxing or CBD), body treatments by Ishga, Body Realignment treatments, men’s treatments by Gentlemen’s Tonic, specific treatments for couples, quick fix treatments or add-ons, or finally poolside options too or those available in-room. Wow, what a choice. 

I soon homed in on the wide selection of deep tissue massages, so great to have a choice rather than just one version and varying lengths of time (which I always go for the longest possible).

The facilities

As well as the absolutely stunning central pool area (with integrated hydro pool and poolside sauna and steam room, with lots of alcove seating and loungers around), there was an incredible ultra-modern gym with separate fitness or yoga room, and of course there is Refuel, the results-driven superfoods and drinks clinic. Drinks and food throughout the day could be served in the Refuel area itself (another visually stunning hotel area) or poolside. The two treatment rooms (both for couples) are available for all day massages and spa treatments, and as well as those there was a separate barber shop by Joe Vipond, nail salon and dedicated hairdressers.

Changing facilities

There are changing facilities for men and women, and certainly the male (as I would undoubtedly expect of the female too) were excellently appointed, in an extremely stylish but opulent fashion. There was a large space at the entrance with sinks on vanity units, lots of fluffy white towels and toiletries by Miller Harris (Tea Tonique), before then opening up into a spacious locker area. On one side there were toilets and the other shower cubicles, all superbly appointed and beautifully designed, all spotlessly (literally gleaming) clean.

The treatment room

The room itself was spacious and well appointed, though minimal in design which immediately made it a calming environment on arrival. The spa and pool level was quite warm anyway, so the room being nicely cooled was a pleasant welcome and indeed I didn’t need the heated massage bed. The face rest was one of the most comfortable I’ve found, often I find that lying face down can get uncomfortable after a while depending on the bed, but absolutely no issues here. Music was calming but not obtrusive, and there were two massage beds so the room could easily be suited to couples, and still feel very spacious.

The treatment itself

Evie was an excellent therapist, and it was actually her that greeted me so pleasantly on my arrival at the spa. With staying in the hotel, as a guest you’re able to take an elevator straight from the bedroom and suite floors right down into The Retreat on level -4. Controlled by the room key cards, you access first the pool and can walk across to the small reception area, or go the long-way round via the gym and fitness room, through Refuel the spa café too.

The Opium deep-tissue massage was exactly what I was looking for, and once finished I could easily have started again, which is such a good sign. After the treatment Evie then escorted me poolside, where one of the special cabanas had been reserved for me. This area was generally quite busy during the times we visited, so having this unexpected reservation surpassed expectations. The Manager too (Stefani) was always present in the Retreat during our times there, which was great to see such an involved manager, so welcoming and indeed helping to keep the poolside area spotless, helping with drinks orders etc.

The hotel

You can read my full detailed note review here on The Private Traveller blog, but in snapshot it’s an incredible place to stay. So centrally located right off Leicester Square, but once inside it feels like you’ve been transported to another world altogether. There’s The Stage off the main reception area which could be downtown Nashville, the Mediterranean restaurant Whitcomb’s, the adjacent Joshua’s Tavern as a traditional London pub, the Japanese inspired rooftop izakaya lounge; and that’s before we start on The Residence, the stunning accommodation with skyline views from floor-to-ceiling windows or the basement Retreat. Cannot recommend this hotel highly enough; a definite London favourite for me.

This Man’s Journal  top tips (any areas for improvement?):

• Hot mint tea after treatment - metal cup just too hot to hold comfortably

• The pool area was busy when we were there, so perhaps some more control over numbers, but it was incredible to have the cabana reserved just for me post-treatment.

• Everything about this hotel from welcome to departure, and especially The Retreat with such a fantastic spa treatment.

• As above, coming out from an incredible deep-tissue spa treatment to find one of the luxurious private cabanas had been reserved.

• Like the rest of this large-scale (though super-boutique) hotel, The Retreat has been so carefully planned and executed, and the facilities second to none.

• For me, having the Manager Stefani make a personal welcome was really appreciated.

Summary

I had wanted to stay at The Londoner for a while now, and to experience The Retreat - neither disappointed and it’s been worth the wait to visit. I’d go back in a flash, either to stay, for a treatment, or a barber shop experience with Joe Vipond - ideally all three rolled together.

The treatment

We were having a couple’s massage, 75 minutes, and there was a choice of different massage types as above, some based on cycles of the Moon and also a deeper tissue massage, which is what I normally go for. ‘Mrs’ ThePrivateTraveller always prefers a less intense massage, so he opted for the New Moon with a different choice of oil. There were three essential oil blends to choose from, our therapist let us try them all,  but since a Covid infection now more than a year ago, I still have a limited range of smell. I can now detect some obvious things like coffee, vinegar, and particularly sugary/sweet smells but am still very restricted on more subtle aromatherapy and essential oils.

Both therapists were excellent, mine was for sure and really good feedback too from the other half who isn’t really massively into treatments as I am. The pressure was great and exactly what I’d asked for, and the ambience of the spa tent was spot on - quiet other than the surrounding sounds of the jungle, good background music, comfortable bed, temperature etc.

The facilities

This isn’t a full on spa as I would normally describe one, but absolutely still a wonderful spa experience - difference really is that because of the nature of the tented camp, there is no dedicated spa building or space as such. What there is however are three wonderfully appointed double massage tents (ours was called Hollandia for Holland) and was nearest to the camp reception area (which also doubles at the rear, as the spa reception/welcome). It was also just opposite to our tent (the Toy Maker’s all being named after traditional job roles) so very easily accessible and only a short hop to get back to the (ultra luxurious tent) afterwards to relax.

As well as the massage tents themselves (more on this next) there is also a dedicated gym tent (called The Armoury) and fitness studio space (all great machines by Life Fitness and lots of additional equipment), with an open air deck below for yoga classes (many are complimentary at different times) or TRX classes. Add to this a huge open-air pool at The Cistern (one of the most unique pools I’ve ever swam in has to be said), like everything at Capella Ubud quirkily designed with industrial steel pipework.

The treatment room

Like all the tents throughout the whole resort, the treatment one was superbly appointed with an entrance space, an en-suite toilet/sink/changing/shower area; all superbly styled and then a large open space for the treatments themselves with a seating area and two dedicated massage beds. There was a large vanity area with double sinks for the therapists to use, the whole space was designed in dark colours with quirky accents, but like the whole resort so perfectly executed.

The hotel/resort

Made up of only 23 tents in all, spread throughout the grounds, they all feature large indoor and outdoor space as well as all having a private outdoor pool, in varying sizes. Ours was the Toy Maker’s tent, close to the camp reception and spa area, but still exceptionally private with a huge terrace at the front, then a separate side area with the pool and another seating area.

Inside the tent (all exceptionally well done and fully air-conditioned, Wi-Fi etc.) was an open plan seating and bedroom area (lots of space) with an open plan bathroom at one end (with huge bronze slipper style bath and a very throne like WC). There was also a screened large outdoor space next to the bathroom with another shower. There was the Living Room (or Officer’s Tent) at the top of the camp for drinks throughout the day, with a complimentary afternoon tea served daily then pre-dinner drinks; as well as a multi-level (dual format) restaurant tent. At the pool was another bar (The Pestle & Mortar) and there was of course the aforementioned Armoury for gym, fitness and yoga. A bit of a walk down to the bottom of the camp was the Wos River temple.

Summary

We had such a wonderful stay in Capella Ubud, but I was a bit disappointed with Ubud not having been there for more than 22 years - it had grown into a city it seemed, unlike what it was before.  Having said that, around Capella Ubud it felt unspoilt and the resort was in such amazing grounds, located on a hillside down to the River Wos and encircled by rice paddy fields. The resort had such a great mix of design features with good service, and the tented camp style worked really well. Auriga Spa was a fabulous addition, and executed extremely well

Having had to rearrange a trip to Palm Springs in California USA due to Covid, we decided to rebook for Modernism Week in 2022 but wanted to have a relaxing vacation somewhere else first. We therefore decided to opt for Mexico for two weeks, and I settled on a three-centre trip across Puebla (a UNESCO world heritage site) outside of Mexico City, then two Chablé Hotels on the Yucatan Peninsula. The first was outside of Merida (Chablé Yucatan - you can find the hotel review and my detailed spa review on the website) before we moved onto Chablé Maroma on the beach at Riviera Maya.

I’ll write up a full hotel review for the blog soon, but in the meantime here’s a review of an absolutely incredible spa treatment at Chablé Maroma, the blissful 3 hour Ya’axche Forest Awakening Ritual. It was hard to pick from such a great selection of treatments, but seeing something this long was music to my ears, and the facilities at the spa were so wonderful, to use pre and post treatment.

Treatment selection

The spa menu is broken up into three different journeys or classes of treatments, these being:

1. Purification - Ocean

2. Balance - Tree

3. Transformation - Air

I love a long spa treatment, and often find even a 90 minute or two hour treatment could be longer. I was therefore really intrigued as soon as I spotted the 3 hour ‘Life Enhancing Signature Ritual’ of Ya’axche Forest Awakening Ritual. With being such a long treatment, it wasn’t available immediately but we were staying for quite a few days so it was something to look forward to later in our stay.

The facilities

As you walk into the spa area, there is the main reception and a shop, before reaching a covered waiting area with comfortable seats and tea/water. From each side are the male and female changing suites, and on from there a choice of three different jacuzzi pools, the largest at the end with swan neck jets and actually large enough to be able to have a (very) short swim. Around the pools, as well as all the occasional seating were a selection of loungers, some with parasols and some benefitting from the open sun. Separate to the spa was a well-appointed gym and fitness room.

Changing facilities

After a great welcome at the Spa, and an introduction to Safari (the beautiful spa cat), there was a brief consultation form to complete before being shown to the male changing facilities. Not quite as expansive as Chablé Yucatán, but still great changing facilities with gleaming surfaces everywhere. First was a relaxation area with separate locker and changing facilities next, spacious toilet and sink area, then both a sauna and steam with ample showering facilities too.

The treatment room

Just off the main canopied but open air entrance, and the various temperature jacuzzi and spa pools, are the treatment pavilions. Mine was first on the left which actually backed onto the largest spa pool, so it meant (in a really good way) I could hear the sound of the running water throughout my treatment. The pavilion was dark and relaxed, the thatched room had subtle uplights and small candles placed throughout to add to ambience. It was deliciously cool after the hot Mexican sun, with a very comfortable massage table in the middle, a sink at the side with more candles, then a separate shower and WC off. Music was subtle but relaxing, and all wooden louvres on one side of the room were closed hiding what (suprise) was to come later.

The treatment itself

The treatment started with a welcome ritual before a full body scrub with rosemary and sea salt. Once complete, I was then invited to go into the en-suite shower to remove the scrub (loved the warmed towel for afterwards) before heading back into the main pavilion. What was an incredible surprise to come back out into what was quite dark, to find that one side of the pavilion had been opened up to reveal a private pool surrounded by luscious jungle foliage. I was then invited to sit over in the pool while I was anointed with essential oils of balsam fir, juniper and cypress trees. 

Then it was another warmed towel to dry myself before back to the incredibly comfortable massage table for the final but longest part of the treatment - a full body deep connective tissue massage with essential oils before the signature Chablé crown chakra anointment of citrus and frankincense. The treatment was completed with the doors being opened again and a comfortable pad being placed by the pool for me to relax and absorb the forest experience, before being brought a glass of chilled champagne. I thought it was all over, being taken back to the main waiting area for some tea and water, but one final surprise was to be presented with a tray of huge chocolate covered strawberries, simply delicious!

The hotel

So different from our stay at Chablé Yucatán with Maroma being right on the beach, but after some initial problems with the front-desk check-in and villa allocation, we really did love the change of experience during our stay. We didn’t actually leave the resort for the best part of a week, so nice to have the expanse of private beach that the resort enjoys where yoga was on most mornings, relax by the pool or on the beach during the day, then have pre-dinner drinks and dinner in one of the three restaurant options. • Really nothing to add, I loved the treatment and the therapist was wonderful. Only very minor comment might have been that the combination of champagne and strawberries together would have been good.

Was such a real highlight of our stay at Maroma, and although the spa wasn’t as jaw-dropping as the sister property at Yucatán, it was certainly a world-class treatment in a spa that I really will remember.

With not travelling as much during Covid-lockdowns and restrictions on spa treatments, reviews have been light on the ground to now. Thankfully with the ability to travel to the Seychelles for Christmas (you can view the whole itinerary on the website) we’ve been able to get away long-haul and be able to spend Christmas far from UK weather and the get-together restrictions. 

I love to travel and also love to try out different spa experiences, with Covid restrictions though some of the treatments were limited from the full spa menu - there were no facials available (which wasn’t an issue as I generally stick to Environ only) but I did like the look of a 90 minute ‘Ginger Renewal’ treatment. Where possible, as well as repeating favourite treatments like reflexology or deep-tissue massage I really do like more unusual treatments and this caught my attention, but on trying to book (and completely understandable) this wasn’t an option at the moment because of the body exfoliation part, which I hadn’t considered.

The treatment

I’m a big fan of Aromatherapy Associates products and use some of them at home, in particular the bath & shower oils and I use much of the De-Stress Muscle range. The treatment was the 90 minute Muscle De-Stress Massage using a choice of three oils; Nourishing Enrich Body Oil, Inner Strength Body Oil or Deep Relax Body Oil. My therapist, Ajeesh allowed me to try all three and while normally I would have been drawn to the Deep Relax oil, this time I seemed to prefer the aroma from the Inner Strength oil. I’ve always been advised to opt for the choice your body prefers most at the particular time, so the Inner Strength oil it was.

First off, sitting on a comfortable bench-sofa at the end of the room, I had a quick foot soak followed by a salt scrub. Once both feet were dried it was a quick change into the disposable boxer shorts (actually pleasing that there was a specific male version, but they were like a mesh-effect and didn’t really cover much) and then laying face-down on a comfortable massage bed. I’d indicated that I was looking for particular attention around both the neck and shoulder area as well as lower back, and indeed the therapist did exactly this. A decent amount of the therapy time was devoted to my back, the pressure was exactly as asked for (deep, firm pressure) and with the addition of the oil I could feel the tension melting.

I often don’t find it particularly comfortable lying face-down with your head through a bed attachment, but actually the one here wasn’t too bad. After focussing on my back, it was then onto legs with some stretching involved too; then a quick turn onto the other side and had the front of legs done, arms and then back of neck again/upper back. The treatment passed quickly but was executed extremely well, at the point at which I thought it was (disappointingly) over, the therapist was just washing his hands again before completing the treatment with a head pressure-point massage, which was excellent too. Overall the treatment itself couldn’t be faulted, was very well planned and executed.

The facilities

The spa area is made up of a number of individual pavilions - it was a bit confusing going in initially as the main ‘spa corridor’ was blocked off for some maintenance work on the (very impressive) steps down into the main area, but the signage wasn’t clear which seemed to direct you to the gym, which is housed in a separate pavillion near the entrance. It looked like there was a set of steps up to the gym only, and no through-way to the main spa reception, but later I realised you could walk up then down on the other side.

As well as the gym pavilion, there was a large building which housed both the male and female changing areas, as well as two separate wet-areas for each and what looked like it was a shop (under renovation); an open-sided spa reception pavilion then the main area was lots of individual spa pavilions throughout the grounds in front, many overlooking the ocean. More on these later.

Changing facilities

The male changing area was a decent size, there were toilets and a large sink/vanity area as you entered, then a smallish recessed area with lockers (no keys to lock). There were three individual shower/changing cabins; each had a walk-in shower area, separate sink and well-appointed with large pristine white towels, flip-flops and Asprey ‘Purple Water’ toiletries - shampoo, conditioner and shower gel (as in the villas). There was then a separate ‘wet’ area - a sunken jacuzzi area with two recessed beds under-water, a sauna and separate steam room. To one side were two experience showers with coloured LED mood-lighting, one with side spray only and the other both side and overhead shower options.

While the facilities were decent, they did look like they were in some need of (and seemed to be already getting) some TLC - there was a separate lounge area which had an adjacent patio area, but this was closed off because the decking had some major holes in the floor. The overarching issue was that the air-conditioning wasn’t working in that area and it was uncomfortably hot - after the warm jacuzzi and although both sauna and steam room had been switched on (and no one else there) after months of getting used to both of these being out of operation elsewhere due to Covid, I decided not to try them here. As with the rest of the hotel, the changing areas were spotlessly clean and there was an attendant cleaning around while I was there.

The treatment room

On booking my treatment, I was given the option of an ocean-view spa pavilion for the massage (without air-conditioning) or one with. I opted for the non air-conditioned and I think this was a great choice. The pavilion was further down from the main (spa) reception area and had the most amazing ocean view - it was open on three sides but had complete privacy from the other adjacent (but not close) spa pavilions and loved having the natural air-cooling. It did take some time to cool down after not having any air-conditioning in the changing facilities (and it was uncomfortably hot) but once I did the massage was great hearing the sound of the ocean lapping onto the beach and the natural sound of birdsong. On paying for the treatment at the end, my therapist did say that the Manager had applied a discount - I wasn’t sure what this was for, but they later phoned to tell me that I’d been given a 90 minute massage for the price of 60 minutes because of the air-conditioning issue (lack of) which was a fair gesture.

The hotel

I’ll be writing a complete hotel review after our stay, but first impressions are good after a potentially rocky start. We did arrive early after our flight and it was well before normal check-in but we were given an ocean-view villa (#122), one of 86 in total across the property, which did have an ocean view but also had a view over a car park, maintenance yard and generator station. Apparently this was only temporary and not normally allocated, once we complained we were moved later that day to one with a considerably better view (villa #280) and without the noise of the generator station either. All the entry-level villas are the same layout but what you are paying for is definitely the different outlook - you pay more for a better (higher level) view.

This Man’s Journal  top tips (any areas for improvement?):

• It did look like some areas were needing some TLC but this also looked like it was already being addressed with the work underway.

• Really minor, but details do count and it was the same elsewhere in the resort - the folios being used for presenting checks or completing the spa details form were woven, so almost impossible to write on without having the most illegible handwriting. I know this might sound trivial, but a flatter surface would be so much better - my therapist afterwards had to come back and ask what my gratuity said because the writing wasn’t clear.

• Great treatment pavilion - loved the view and natural air-conditioning.

• Aromatherapy Associates products - personal favourite so great when they can be incorporated into a treatment. 

• Excellent therapist - great massage and executed extremely well.

This is my first ever dedicated spa review - if you’ve read any of my hotel reviews you will know that I’m a huge fan of a spa treatment and invariably will also try out some in any hotel we stay with a spa.

The treatment

I always like to try different treatments when away and one that caught my eye immediately was the 60 minute Warm Bamboo Massage. Ratko was my therapist and the treatment (a combination of massage by hand and warmed bamboo sticks of varying depths and lengths, with oil) and this was just wonderful. This being the first massage since lock-down (so probably for over 5 months) was so needed, and it was executed so well. It actually made me realise that spas and treatments like this deserve a section of their own on ThePrivateTraveller website, rather than just being included within a hotel review.

The facilities

One of my favourite places was the Villa Spa, this is spread across four levels - on the first level you have the pool, showers and ladies/gents WC’s (all beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean), the level above a large gym (not widely used, but had to be booked for the moment due to Covid restrictions). On a level above that is a large wellness area with both sauna and steam rooms (check availability due to restrictions), relaxation beds, showers and where you would have body treatments. The top level (level 3 of the main West building) - aptly positioned near to our room (#314) is the main Spa entrance. Here there are private male and female changing rooms/lockers, a nail salon and various treatment rooms; again all beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean and superbly maintained.

Changing facilities

These were small, although there were a number of lockers it was probably designed to just have one man (separate, similar changing room next door for women) changing at a time. The lockers were spotlessly clean, as was everything it has to be said about the entire Villa Spa (and whole hotel come to that) and came complete with a robe to change into, slippers, a towel and some black disposable pants (which incidentally I still can’t work out to this day whether I had them on back to front). There was a WC, sink and shower to the back complete with everything you could need - shower gel, shampoo and conditioner.

The treatment room

As with everything, spotlessly clean and well appointed with two individual treatment beds (for couples massage) - I was invited to remove my robe and get under the covers on one; I could see the bamboo sticks warming in a special case on the other. The hotel

Our visit to Croatia was the first foreign trip since lockdown and we were lucky enough to visit before the UK applied a mandatory quarantine period on the return. Absolutely loved everything about Hotel Villa Dubrovnik - great location, fantastic service, stunning scenery and outlook, amazing food and of course this wonderful spa; you’ll probably gather that I liked it! They are also members of Leading Hotels of the World, which is an absolute favourite of mine.
