We only had intentions of visiting a specific museum that we have been meaning to check out for the past six years, but then we thought, why not turn it into a full family day. So, we did, and I’m excited to share with you how you can make a fun family day out of visiting the small town of New Bremen, Ohio!

First Stop: The Bicycle Museum of America

While we are not strangers to New Bremen, the Bicycle Museum of America is one place that we had not visited until recently. I’m not sure why it took us six years to stop in and check this place out, but I can tell you, once we did, we fell in love. In fact, Logan loves it so much he keeps asking to go back.

While the museum isn’t huge, it really does have so much to offer and teach you about the history of bicycles. Let me share a few reasons why you should take the time to visit with your family.

Huge Collection of Bicycles

The museum itself only display about 300 bikes at a time. However, they have around 1000 bikes in storage that they keep in rotation through the museum. For example, there is a display when you first walk in, where they feature specific bicycles for each month. When we visited, they were featuring space-themed bikes in honor of the 50^th anniversary of when the first man walked on the moon.

They also have a unique collection of bikes that you won’t see anywhere else. Some of Logan’s and our favorites are ones which are in a room on the second floor, like a floating bicycle, a unicycle, and even one that was designed for paratroopers.

It’s Educational for the Whole Family

The museum is filled with over a hundred years of rich history about bicycles that touches on so much more as well. I feel like all three of us learned something new with each visit (we have gone twice now in just a few short months). A little tip, if you get the chance when you go, ask for a tour. We highly recommend it. The people that work and volunteer there are so friendly and knowledgeable. Not to mention that their passion and excitement about history and bicycles really shows.

Also, if you opt for a tour, just be sensitive to the age of your kiddos. Logan is six, and he got a little antsy, but he listened and learned so much from it. If you have younger children, it might be best to tour the museum at your own pace and use one of the printed and laminated guides to give you some history and information.

Kid and Family Friendly

While the entire museum is not hands-on. There are places throughout that are hands-on and fun for kids. Especially the third floor where there is a two-person pedal car, and a few other unique bikes you and your family can try out. In case you were wondering, the pedal car is a huge hit with Logan (and Shadrach and I if I’m being honest) and he has asked many times if he can have one at home. So be sure to leave some extra time for the third floor.

Second Stop: Hit Up New Bremen Coffee Company For Lunch

After spending the morning learning all about bicycles, we really worked up an appetite. So, our next stop was the New Bremen Coffee Company.

I know what you are thinking, a coffee shop, for lunch? Well, as parents, a good cup of coffee is always welcome, am I right? Also, this place happens to serve breakfast and lunch, as well as some bakery treats and smoothies. The lunch isn’t super fancy, but it feels like a cut above a homemade meal. It’s also a great place to get sandwiches like peanut butter and jelly for your kiddos (which Logan loved).

This is definitely a great place to stop for lunch after you visit the Bicycle Museum. It’s just a short walk down the street. There are lots of seating, inside and out, and the prices are very reasonable. Just be sure to check the hours before heading there as they are not open past 4 pm most days.

Last Stop: Komminsk Legacy Park

After our bellies were full, we headed to the local park, right behind the Bicycle Museum, Komminsk Legacy Park. It’s the perfect place to let your kiddos run off some energy, and it is one of Logan’s all-time favorite parks. Mostly because there’s a splash pad and some fun, unique playground equipment.

Since it’s summer, our first stop was the splash pad. We made sure and brought Logan’s swim clothes and a towel so that he could enjoy the water. Then once he was done playing in the splash pad, we headed over to the playground area to run around and dry off a bit. His first stop was his favorite part of the playground, which is the newest addition, a musical game where you run around this circle trying to hit the buttons that light up while some beats play. The goal is to get as many points as possible. While Logan doesn’t care about the points, he loves the game.

There is also a super-fast concrete slide, swings, places to climb, and musical instruments to play. So, be sure if you come during the summer, to bring swimsuits and towels so your kiddos can enjoy the splash pad and take a few minutes to explore the rest of the playground. One quick tip, if you are looking for a bathroom, there is one located by the far side of the park, by the big pavilion.

Small Town Family Fun

I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday than enjoying the picturesque town of New Bremen, Ohio. It’s not huge, but there is plenty to do to enjoy a family day together. So, if you are looking for something fun for your family, check it out! We love the Bicycle Museum of America, and the Komminsk Legacy Park with the splash pad is always a hit.

Each year we set a family goal of spending one weekend a month getting out of the house and having quality time together. I must admit that this past year we have failed at this! It has not happened monthly. However, we were able to get in a weekend away this fall to one of our favorite cities!

It turned out to be the ultimate family weekend in Cincinnati, and I have to say I loved every minute of it! We live two hours away, which to me, is the perfect distance for a quick getaway. One of my rules for a weekend trip is that it must be three hours or less drive because I don’t want to spend all weekend in the car. We love it when there is a little bit of a road trip involved because, hello, road trip snacks! But really, when you have younger children, shorter road trips are just more enjoyable. So, Cincinnati meets this requirement for us, plus it’s an awesome place to visit as a family!

There is so much to do and see! More than you can fit into a weekend but on this adventure, we packed in as much as we could, and I’m so excited to share it all with you! Plus, if you make it to the end, there will be a printable itinerary with all the details, so you can plan your own family getaway.

Day 1

After getting up and out the door (later than planned) we made it into Cincinnati around lunchtime. So, we decided before heading to any fun activities we needed to stop and get some lunch. I don’t know about you guys, but Shadrach gets hangry, and it makes a trip more enjoyable for everyone if we keep him fed. That leads me to our first stop on our ultimate family weekend.

Camp Washington Chili

One of the foods that Cincinnati is known for is their chili. So, what better way to kick off our trip than with a lunch trying some of the best in town at a restaurant that is a staple in Cincy. Camp Washington Chili is a fun restaurant that is open 24/6. Yep, you read that right, they are closed on Sunday, but otherwise, you can eat there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner or whenever you get a hankering for chili.

One big thing that makes this family-friendly is that they have a kid’s menu! Logan was able to find a grilled cheese, (which ended up being one of four grilled cheese from our weekend). The food was good, and it was a great casual atmosphere. It turned out to be the perfect way to fuel up before heading to our next stop. Just be sure before you leave to check out the awesome Camp Washington Chili mural behind the restaurant!

Cincinnati Museum Center

One of our favorite things to do as a family is checking out museums. It is a big plus when they are kid friendly or have a children’s museum. As it happened our next stop was the Cincinnati Museum Center which has a children’s museum, along with three other museums, Omnimax theater, and special exhibits that change periodically (and you can learn more about all of that here.) For full disclosure, while we were there, the entire center was undergoing major renovations. That means we couldn’t see all it has to offer but what we were able to see was amazing!

We checked out the Duke Energy Children’s Museum and two special exhibits, one was all about chocolate, and the other was all about guitars. Let me just say, we did the two special exhibits first and they did a fantastic job making them family friendly.  In both, there were plenty of hands-on exhibits that Logan loved checking out and they kept his attention.

Then we headed into the children’s museum, which is by far one of our favorite children’s museums. They have everything you can think of and is the perfect place to let your kiddo’s imagination run wild while running off energy.

We could have easily spent all day at the Cincinnati Museum Center, but we had a few other stops planned for the day, so we only spent a few hours. However, if you do decide to visit, you can check out hours and prices here! I know that I can’t give an honest opinion about the other museums inside the center, but if they are done as well as the two special exhibits and the children’s museums, then I can promise you won’t be disappointed.

Carew Tower and Observation Deck

After leaving the Cincinnati Museum Center, we headed to our hotel to get checked in, and just take a quick rest. (And don’t worry, I will share more about the awesome hotel later.) Then we headed to my absolute, hands-down, favorite place from the entire weekend, the Carew Tower and Observation Deck.

I know what you are thinking, it’s one of those cheesy touristy spots. Well, maybe you could look at it that way, but I must tell you all, the views were spectacular! It is worth embracing the whole tourist attitude and stopping for a look.

Just a few things to keep in mind. This is located downtown, so parking can be a little hairy. Be sure to look at a map of downtown ahead of time (which you can find at your hotel) and see where the parking is. We discovered that our GPS wouldn’t work for some odd reason and we ended up getting a little lost, but what is a trip without a little adventure (which is what I call it when we get lost.)

 Once you find parking and get to the tower, you walk in and head to the elevators. In all honesty, I was a little nervous about the elevator ride because it was up 45 floors, and I wasn’t sure how long it would take. Well, as it turns out, it goes super-fast! Then once you get to the 45^th floor, you get out, go around a corner and find yourself face to face with a very vintage elevator to take the last few floors to the top.

There is an option to walk up steps the last four floors, or you can take the tiny elevator (it had a max capacity of 4 people!), it’s up to you. In case you are wondering, we took the elevator, and it worked just find. Just keep in mind, that you will have a few stairs to walk up after the last elevator ride.

Once you get to the top, there is a little shop you walk through and pay (yes you must pay to go out on the deck). One big thing to keep in mind is that they only take cash, you can’t use your credit card to pay for tickets! So, go prepared or otherwise you’ve just enjoyed a fun elevator ride. One more thing I want to let you know about is that they do not allow you to take bags (like backpacks) out on the observation deck. You may want to leave it in the car if you don’t feel comfortable leaving it in the shop.

Once we finally made it out onto the deck, I completely forgot about everything else. We arrived around sunset, and the views were spectacular! It was amazing to see Cincinnati from this vantage point. All three of us ended up loving the Carew Tower and Observation Deck. Well, worth your time, I promise!

Americano Burger Bar

At this point, it was getting to be dinner time. Thankfully our next planned stop was just right around the corner from the Carew Tower. We headed to Americano Burger Bar and let me tell you, the food here is so good!

It turned out to be a great family friendly place to eat. There is a fun shuffleboard that you could play while you wait for your food, which is always a good thing when you have a wiggly child. I will say they did not have an actual children’s menu. However, when we asked, they do have a few options for kids. Keep in mind, this is a burger place, so most kids will eat a hamburger and fries, so a children’s menu isn’t necessary. If you do happen to have a picky eater like us, the few things they had were a life saver. They did have a grilled cheese (which ended up being grilled cheese #2 of 4), and Logan enjoyed that!

Overall, this place was great, and I can’t recommend it enough! The service was fantastic, and the food was so good. You can check out the menu and location here. Also, before you leave, be sure to look up at the ceiling for a fun little surprise.

Sporting Events or Parks

One of the great things about being in a big city, like Cincinnati, is that you have lots of options after dinner. Depending on the time of year you can go visit a park. One of our favorites is the Smale Riverfront Park, which is right down the road from Americano Burger Bar.

Or you can check and see what sports are going on and head to a game. We had the option of heading to the opening night of Cincinnati’s hockey team, the Cyclones. Or, depending on the time of year, you can check out the Cincinnati Reds (Baseball) or the Bengals (Football).

By the time we finished with dinner, it was getting close to 8 pm, and we were exhausted. So, we opted to head back to the hotel and relax since we knew the next day was going to be busy. However, if it had been a little warmer, and stayed lighter out longer, we probably would have headed to the park for a little bit. Just know, if you aren’t ready for the day to end after dinner, there are lots of options.

Day 2

After getting a good night’s sleep, we woke up, grabbed some breakfast, and got ready for day two of quality family time exploring Cincinnati. And in full disclosure, in typical Ramnath family style, we ended up running about an hour later than planned, but it all worked out (which you can find out more about that from our videos)

Newport Aquarium

Our first stop of day 2 is the Newport Aquarium, which is one of our favorite places in Cincinnati. It’s definitely one of those places you must time just right, or it can be super packed. However, this day was busy, but we were still able to enjoy it.

While we enjoy taking our time and looking at everything, there are a few things that we always make sure to stop and see. First stop is always the locations set up where you can touch starfish and various other sea creatures. There is also a place you can touch small sharks and another one where you can touch sting rays. We always take the time to stop and give Logan the option to touch these things. Sometimes he is brave and touches, other times, he just enjoys looking at them. Either way, it gives you and you your kiddos the opportunity to see these animals up close.

The next thing we always stop and see is the penguins. They are a favorite because they are so interesting to watch. Then all the 360 tunnels that you walk through and can watch all the fish and sharks all around you. Finally, our final favorite thing is the shark walk! There is something fun and adventurous about walking in a net tunnel above sharks. It never disappoints.

One more quick thing about Newport Aquarium is that occasionally they have special events and while we were there, they had mermaids and pirates throughout the aquarium. Logan loved the mermaids. So, check ahead of time to see if any special events are happening and plan your trip to include them because they make it just a little more special.  

Tom + Chee

After checking out the Aquarium, we worked up quite an appetite and so our next stop was one of our favorite places in Cincinnati, Tom + Chee! They serve grilled cheese and tomato soup, which was the perfect comfort food for the rainy day that we were having. And there just happens to be a Tom + Chee right outside the aquarium, so we stopped in for lunch.

If you are keeping count, this turned out to be grilled cheese 3 of 4 for Logan on our trip, but I think it might have been the best! Also, if you get the chance to stop here for a meal, you need to try their signature grilled cheese donut. Shadrach gets one every time, and he loves it! It’s so rich but worth trying at least once.

Cincinnati Art Museum

After a quick lunch, our next stop was the Cincinnati Art Museum. I must be truthful, this stop made me really nervous because I have a child that loves to experience everything by touch. Art museums aren’t exactly known for being kid-friendly. So, before we even arrived at the museum, I was busy preparing Logan that he would not be allowed to touch anything!

I did do my research before our trip, and I knew that the Cincinnati Art Museum offered family programs and the Sunday that we were going to be there, they had art carts set up. So, as soon as we arrived and headed inside, we stopped at the front desk and asked them where the art cart was. They pointed us in the right direction, and we headed there first. Let me just tell you, if you can plan your visit around these special family events, please do! They are done on a regular schedule, and they help make the art museum fun and interactive for kids. Also, if needed to help keep your kiddos entertained, they have See Play Learn Kits that you can ask for at the front desk. You can read more about those here.

One of the big things to keep in mind about the Art Museum is it is huge! We spent three hours there and only made it through 1/3 of the museum. So, pace yourself and know if you have children, you probably won’t make it through the whole thing in your first visit. That’s okay though because this museum is FREE so you can head back another time.

Also, another thing to keep in mind is you must be careful about what you take pictures of. Look at the signs for each painting and piece of art because you are not allowed to photograph everything. We also discovered upon arrival that we couldn’t record any videos. Just a heads up before you go!

Overall, we ended up loving the Cincinnati Art Museum and will definitely be heading back the next time we get a chance. Especially since there is still so much to see and it’s free! It is a very family friendly place and worth taking your kids of any age!

The Rook – Cincinnati Board Game Parlor

At this point in our Sunday, we were getting kind of tired and needed a bit of a break. So, our next stop was The Rook, which is a Board Game Parlor downtown in the Over the Rhine district. It turned out to be the perfect stop for a rainy afternoon that allowed us to recharge.

The Rook has over 800 board games to choose from, and they range across all age groups and group sizes. We opted to play Mouse Trap (a little throwback to my childhood) per Logan’s request. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun. One thing to keep in mind though if you are going with children, this is technically a bar, and there is alcohol served. Since we were there at 3 pm on a Sunday afternoon, it wasn’t a problem for us. So just be aware of what time you are going if you have kids.

One more thing about this amazing place is that you can sit and play games as long as you like for free! However, they do ask that you order something to eat or drink; otherwise, they will charge you a $5 fee. We took that time to get something to drink and relax for about an hour. It was such a fun place and worth checking out!

Revolution Rotisserie and Bar

Our last stop of the evening was dinner at Revolution Rotisserie and Bar. Let me just say, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this place was so good! It turned out to be the perfect comfort food for a rainy cold Sunday evening. It turned out that we were the only people in the restaurant eating, which made for a nice quiet meal.

In case you were wondering from the name, rotisserie chicken is their thing. So if you aren’t a fan of chicken, this isn’t your place. But I will say both of the meals Shadrach and I got were amazing! We love chicken, and they did not disappoint. Logan, however, at his fourth grilled cheese of the weekend. They did have a kids menu and crayons which made this place very family friendly! If you find yourself in the Over the Rhine area, be sure to hit this place up for lunch or dinner!

One quick tip to keep in mind with the Over the Rhine area, you are downtown, which means parking can be a little hairy. We did find a parking lot that was close to The Rook and was within walking distance to Revolution Rotisserie. Just be prepared to park and do some walking and hopefully you won’t get lost as we did!

The Summit Hotel

Now it’s time to jump into a little about the amazing hotel we stayed in for our trip! For two nights, our home was the Summit Hotel, which is a new hotel that just opened in the last year. It’s a contemporary hotel filled with artwork which we absolutely loved! I’m pretty sure Logan’s favorite part was the glass elevator that we took to the eighth floor. Never mind the fact that Shadrach and did our best not to look as we went up, Logan had his face plastered to the window the entire ride.

The rooms were spacious, clean, and had everything we needed. While we didn’t eat at the hotel on site, it was highly recommended by the staff along with the rooftop terrace. Since it rained our entire trip, we didn’t get a chance to check out the terrace, but we had a great view of it from our room, and it looks like a great place to relax and have a drink at the end of the day.

There are a few hidden surprises throughout the hotel, like a library with a pool table and foosball table, a fully equipped gym, and plenty of places to sit and work or read quietly. Since our weekend was so packed full, we didn’t get much of a chance to do any of those things, but we did enjoy exploring the hotel and seeing everything it had to offer.

While the Summit Hotel wasn’t central to downtown and all of the activities, it was just a quick 15-minute car ride away and worked out perfect for us. We loved that they had their own parking deck so we didn’t need to worry about parking outside or searching for parking like we would have had we stayed in downtown Cincinnati. So, check this place out! It’s perfect for a family weekend away.

The Ultimate Family Weekend

There you have it, the ultimate family weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio! This turned out to be a fun-filled two days, and we made so many memories. Logan is still talking about this trip and everything we did. It ended up being a great way to get away for a few days and recharge and spend some quality time together as a family. Fast forward six or seven years and here I am a mom to a five-year-old little boy, and I am proud to declare that I am in fact exactly what I said I wouldn’t be, a homeschooling mom (see life is funny right?). As much as I would love to share with all of you the reason why we chose to homeschool Logan, I’m going to save that post for another day. Instead, I would like to share with you what resources and curriculum we are currently using. And, if you stick with me, at the end of the post, there will be a free printable for you!

A Few Tips

So, before I dive into what we are using to homeschool Logan, a few things to keep in mind. First, I am NOT an expert at teaching my child. In fact, I find myself googling and searching Pinterest for guidance and ideas on a regular basis. I am also hitting up my homeschooling mom friends who are further along the journey than I am.

Second, the curriculum and resources that I am recommending are geared towards pre-K and Kindergarten because that is all we have done up to this point. I plan to do a blog post each year with updated curriculum and resources for what we are using as Logan gets older. So, be sure to sign up for our newsletter and bookmark our website so you can find out what we are using next year if this is something that interests you. ????

Now, third, I am not in anyway trying to push homeschooling on to anyone! I believe that you must do what is best for your child. Each and every family and child are unique, and I understand that homeschooling may not be for you. This is just what works for us, and we feel like it is best for Logan and our family. So, no judgment here. These could also be excellent resources for you to help supplement your child’s education.

Our School Room

Let’s start with a quick tour of our school room. It is not fancy in any way. It’s just a simple area that meets all our needs. I do the bulk of our school day (which is generally an hour or two) at the kitchen table. Yep, you read that right, I use our kitchen table, not a desk or a special room designated as the “school room.”

On the wall by the table, I have a magnetic chalkboard that I purchased from Amazon this past summer. I know what you are thinking, chalkboards are messy, and it sort of is, but, it’s a great way to work on handwriting. Kids need resistance when learning to write and a dry erase boards doesn’t provide that, and it is sometimes hard to get little ones excited about using a pencil. Hence why I bought the chalkboard. I did find some dustless chalk (which isn’t completely dustless, but I imagine it’s better than the regular stuff) and it came with a handy eraser.

Then, at Aldi I found these square dry erase boards. I use them to write down what is being taught for the week in each subject. Unfortunately, they are no longer available, but I did find a similar one here. I love these just because it’s convenient to have all the information for the week in one easy place to look at. Plus, if Shadrach wants to know what we are working on, he can glance at the board and see it.

The last thing I purchased that I use in our school room are these magnetic clips. I use them to hold up our timeline (or history) cards. I needed a way to display the cards each week, and these clips work perfectly with our magnetic chalkboard for that purpose.

Reading

Before we officially started homeschooling, Logan begged me to teach him how to read. He had just turned 4, and I’ll be honest, I was completely overwhelmed at the thought. I didn’t have a clue where to even begin. I did some research and started with the book How to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons (whew that’s a mouthful).

This is a great book, but I will say, it’s not for every kid. Logan hated it! In fact, it sort of turned him off to reading for a while. The lessons are kind of long, and he just wasn’t ready to sit and learn when we tried it. If your child is five or six and is ready to start learning to read, this book might be a good place to start.

The book I ended up using is Alpha Phonics, which came recommended from a fellow homeschooling mom. The lessons are short, and even though Logan does fight me some days, he is learning to read from it. I love it because it’s teaching the phonetic sounds and not sight words. So, basically, everywhere we go, Logan is trying to sound out all of the words he sees, which this bookworm mama is absolutely loving!

There are about 150 lessons, and we are only on lesson 55. At this point, he can already sound out lots of words. He has even read small, easy reader books to me. So, Alpha Phonics is my number one recommendation if you are wanting to teach your child to read!

Teachers Pay Teachers

Last year was our first official year homeschooling. Since Logan was only 4, I wasn’t quite ready to just jump into a whole big expensive math program. I just wanted something that was simple, fun and cheap. That is when I stumbled upon the website Teachers Pay Teachers. Which is basically the Etsy for teachers.

This is an amazing and overwhelming website! It’s a place where teachers can make resources for other teachers and parents. They are mostly things that you can purchase and download. Then you print and prepare them however the instructions direct you. I love this site first off, because I’m helping to support school teachers. It is a way for some of them to supplement their income.

Second, I love it because I stumbled on some great shops (think Etsy, where each teacher has their own little shop) that gave me exactly what I was looking for when it came to a simple math program for Logan.

Here is my warning though, it’s great, but I did spend A LOT of time prepping and putting it all together. There were lots of printing, laminating, and cutting. However, Logan learned so much from it. Here are the shops that I have marked as my favorites and what I used from them:

Mrs Ds Corner – I love her morning adapted work binder! So many good things in it.

Fun Hands-On Learning – The Early Learners Math Curriculum is what I used. I will say, I know I said above that I was looking for an affordable curriculum last year and this is currently $92. When I purchased it last year, she had just started creating it and I only paid $32. It has gone up in price since she has continued to add to it.

Math

Now that brings me to the Math curriculum that I chose for this school year. I will say that there are SO MANY options out there for homeschooling curriculum. I find myself very overwhelmed with it. So, a lot of the time, I will get a few recommendations from some of my homeschooling mom friends and research their  suggestions to see which one is the best fit for us.

This year, I decided that the activities I printed from Teachers Pay Teachers last year just wasn’t enough and I wanted something with a little more depth to it. I ended up choosing Math Lessons for a Living Education (Level 1). This is a Charlotte Mason based program (and if you don’t know who or what that is, feel free to check her out here) that shows how math is in the world all around us instead of just being numbers.

The website has a little evaluation test you can do to see which book you should start with your child. I skipped doing this part for Logan because I felt like even though some of what I taught him last year would be in the level 1 book, I figured going over it all again wouldn’t hurt him.  So far, he and I have both loved this program! It’s simple, and there is a good balance of worksheets and activities. It’s usually the first thing he asks to do each day.

Side note, this is a workbook. I don’t believe that you can make copies, I think you have to buy a book for each child. The pages are perforated so you can tear them out, and they come with holes on the side so they can be placed in a binder if you wish. We are just working straight out of the book, and it seems to be fine for us. Ultimately you can do whatever works best for you. Just keep in mind that it’s not the type of book that you can use for more than one child or sell when you are done.

Classical Conversations

Right now, the bulk of Logan’s education comes from a program called Classical Conversations. I’m afraid I could go on and on about this program, but I will spare you and just share with you the subjects that we are learning, and you can read more in depth about the program here!

So, Classical Conversations provides History (in the form of a history sentence each week and a timeline that is memorized each year), Geography, Science, Math (basically learning to skip count and some basic math rules), Latin, and English grammar. This is all information that I teach and reinforce with Logan each week at home. Basically, we are just working on memorizing the facts, I don’t do much in teaching the why behind everything right now, but will as he gets older.

Then, on Tuesday’s we have what is called a Community Day. We do pay tuition for this because it is kind of like having semi-normal school for half a day. The difference is that I go with him and then I continue teaching and reinforcing what is taught by a tutor that day, throughout the rest of the week. On Tuesday’s they also introduce art and music, which I love!

If you have never heard of Classical Conversations, I encourage you to head over and check it out! We LOVE this program, and Logan has learned a ton from it so far. And, in all honesty, I’ve learned so much from it as well! The best part to me is that there is a built-in community of families that we get to interact with regularly and that I have as support and encouragement during our homeschooling journey.

The last thought I want to leave you with is that I really do try to have fun with Logan. I believe it’s important to make learning fun and this may look different from day to day. Sometimes it’s doing a fun activity, like playing an educational game. Other days it might be doing a fun worksheet together. Ultimately it can be anything that gets your child excited about learning!

This has not been an easy journey, but it has been rewarding. We have grown and stretched ourselves in ways we never thought possible, from learning as much as we can about blogging and social media, to figuring out how to collaborate with multiple brands. There have been moments where we felt like we’ve taken three steps backward for every single step forward. The thing is, every bit of this process has brought us to this point in time. To this day, where we get to celebrate two years of hard work and dedication.

Why We Started this Blog

When we first started this journey, we didn’t have a clear picture of what we wanted our little corner of the internet to be about. We knew we wanted to encourage others and inspire them in some way, shape or form. Also, we knew that we would like to find like-minded people to form a community that understood and shared our passions.

Well, if you’ve been around here for any length of time, I’m sure you may have picked up on the fact that we have wavered back and forth between many subjects. We’ve jumped between sharing about our personal life, parenting, health, and family adventures. And while all those are subjects that we care about, there is one thing that has become very clear to us in the past few months; it’s hard to create a community of like-minded people when we aren’t focused on one main thing that we are passionate about.

So, after lots of thinking and discussions (and maybe some arguments), we have finally discovered what our main, heartfelt passion is…

Our True Passion

Spending time together, as a family, exploring the world around us. We desire to give Logan a childhood filled with amazing memories and adventures. It would be so easy for us to fill up these early years with material things, but we believe that filling it with a collection of adventures is so much richer and will last a lifetime.

With this passion, we have realized that we want to build a community of people that feel the same way we do about collecting adventures. We want a group that will encourage and inspire each other to go out and explore the world around them. As rich as life can be with getting out and seeing the world, it is even better when you have people to share it with, even if they are virtual friends.

What Does Collecting Adventures Mean to Us?

Before I tell you how you can be a part of our community, I want to share with you a little bit of what collecting adventures means to us and what it is all about…

Collecting adventures is a ‘MOVEMENT‘ that encourages you to get out and experience the world you live in. It can be camping or hiking in the great outdoors, exploring a big city and all the museums it offers, combing the shores of a beach and discovering the sea life or just experiencing new things.

It is about encouraging you to look at life as an adventure and to find the joy and excitement in everything you do. So, no matter your budget or how far you travel, there is something fun and exciting to discover and explore all around you.

Adventures do not have to be something daring or over the top. To Shadrach and I, it’s just about getting out and discovering the world in the ways that make us excited. Plus we get to see Logan’s excitement whenever he experiences something new. It can come in so many shapes and sizes, and to us, there is no right or wrong way to do it. I wasn’t very old, maybe four or five, and my dad and I had a special day at the zoo, just the two of us. (When you are the middle child and the only girl, this is a big deal.) So, my dad and I were enjoying our time and had stopped to eat the picnic lunch we brought with us.

We were sitting at some picnic tables close to a pond. As we were finishing up, we started feeding some corn chips to a few of the geese . Then suddenly, a massive amount of geese started surrounding us. If you know anything about geese, it’s that they can be mean. They started attacking us for corn chips!

My dad grabbed me and ran. Let’s just say that was the part of our zoo visit that we have never forgotten. And I think it’s safe to say I have a healthy fear of geese after that incident. However, it did make for a great story.

While I hope that our zoo visits now are not quite that exciting, I do love to head to the zoo with Shadrach and Logan and make those great family memories. I’m learning to embrace the unexpected and enjoy our visits because the unexpected is what makes for the best stories and memories

I can’t guarantee excitement and unexpected moments, but I can give you a few tips on how to make great family memories when you visit the zoo. Here are seven ways to create memories and enjoy your visit at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

Take Your Time

Something I’m learning as a parent is that when we visit places, it is less about what I want to do and see and more about making sure that my child gets to look at the things that interest him. I want Logan to have a love of exploring and learning as we go, which means letting him lead us and direct us in his time and not ours.

I think as adults we tend to want to see everything and hurry through the zoo. It is so hard sometimes to slow down and enjoy where we are and what we are seeing. I’m learning that I miss so much by not slowing down enough.

I find it fascinating to sit and watch an active animal for a while. I’m pretty sure Logan could sit and watch fish of any kind for hours. Just a side note, the Cincinnati Zoo does not have an aquarium area, but I do believe there are some fish in the reptile house which Logan loved!

So, take your time as you walk through the zoo. Don’t worry if you don’t see every single animal. Let your children enjoy their visit. Maybe make out a list ahead of time of the animals they would like to see so you can plan your trip and ensure you see what is most important to your family.

Take Lots of Pictures

Part of making those memories at the zoo is watching my child’s expression as he learns and discovers animals. So, I make sure to get lots of pictures! I do get some of the animals but more than anything I want to capture and remember his excitement and awe at the moment as he sees each animal.

So, have that camera ready, whether it’s a big fancy camera, your phone camera or anything in-between. Be sure to capture those moments, like when they get excited to see their favorite animal. Years later, you’ll be glad you took the time to snap the picture.

Oh, and be sure to find those little cutout boards that you stick your head through. I love those, and we always stop to get a picture of them. They make fun memories, and the Cincinnati zoo has a few of them throughout the park.

Hit up the Extras (like the 4-D Theater, Train, and Carousel)

The day we visited the Cincinnati Zoo, it ended up being the hottest day of the year so far. I mean, 90’s hot where you sweat just standing there. So, we decided when getting our tickets that we would need a breather and bought tickets to the 4-D Theater, train, and carousel.

There were a few options on what to see in the theater, but we opted for the animated movie of Storks. This was not the entire movie, just a fifteen-minute condensed version and let me tell you; it was so much fun! We had 3-D glasses, and the theater was equipped to make sure that it all felt like we were experiencing the entire movie. Logan loved it! In fact, he was still talking about this for days after.

Keep in mind if you want to do the 4-D Theater that you need to buy tickets in advance (like at the entrance or online) and you must buy them for a specific time and show up at that time. We sort of lost track of time and ended up having to run to the theater to make it in time for our show. It was worth it though!

The train was also a must do on our list because Logan LOVES trains and we knew it would be a nice little break from walking. The train at the Cincinnati Zoo is fun, and you get to see parts of the zoo from a different perspective.

In short, check out the extras when you are heading to the zoo and consider them because they do make your visit to the zoo just a bit more special.

Check the Schedule for Shows and Special Feedings

If your children have a favorite animal, be sure to check the schedule to see if there is a special event during the day with that animal. For example, leading up to our visit, all Logan could talk about was seeing and feeding the giraffes. So, we made sure to get there and head straight for the giraffes so he could feed them. And, he is still talking about that experience.

You can check here for a list of animals and their feeding schedule. Let me tell you; it is one way to make memories that will last forever with your children. There is nothing quite like seeing your favorite animal up close and personal. Logan shares with everyone about how weird the giraffe’s tongue felt. I love that we were able to do this with him.

Look for Stations Set Up with Zoo Employees Featuring an Animal

As we were walking through the zoo, we happened upon a little booth set up with an employee. We ventured over to it and discovered that they had a lizard there that you could touch and learn a bit more about it. Logan couldn’t wait to feel the lizard, and he didn’t want to leave it.

So, keep your eyes out for these little booths throughout the park because they are a great way to get up close to animals you might not get otherwise. Also, you have the opportunity to learn more about an animal from an expert, and it gives your kiddos the chance to ask questions as well.

Plan a Fun Lunch

When planning our visit, we debated between taking a picnic lunch or eating at the zoo. We decided on this trip to eat at the zoo. Usually, the dining options have pretty good food. I have to say though; I never expected to find a food truck inside the zoo! The food was so good! There are lots of options at the Cincinnati Zoo that you won’t see at most zoos and you can check out the list here.

Although we bought meals this time, I love having a fun picnic at the zoo too! So, go with whatever works for your family and relax and enjoy it! I promise you won’t be disappointed with whichever option you choose!

Know Your Children’s Limits

My last tip for making memories at the Cincinnati Zoo is to know your children’s limits. Know that trying to get through the entire zoo might be too much. It is a relatively large and spread out zoo, so it does take a while to get through.

Plan out your visit ahead of time. Discuss as a family what animals are a must-see and help everyone understand that you may not see every single animal. That way if you do end up making it through the whole park, it’s a pleasant surprise, but if you don’t, no one is upset.

We arrived at the zoo later than we planned and ended up running out of time to see everything. The funny thing is this ended up being a blessing because Logan was tired after seeing half the zoo and spending four hours there. So, it worked out exactly as it needed to.

At the end of the day, you know your children and how much they can handle, so plan your trip according to that.

Most of all, have fun! Enjoy each other’s company and focus on creating memories that will last forever.

A Few Quick Tips for Your Visit

1. Be sure to bring a stroller or wagon if you know your children won’t be able to walk the entire zoo.
2. Plan your visit before you go so you can ensure you get to do animal feedings or extra’s like the 4-D theater.
3. Avoid planning your visit around busy and hot times. We went the Friday of Memorial Day weekend thinking it would be kind of slow because it was a weekday. Boy, were we wrong, and it ended up being hot and crowded! So, plan around holidays and weather if possible. (maybe even go one day in the middle of the week while everyone else is working)
4. Don’t forget your sunscreen, hats, water, and a camera!

Now Go Make Adventures at the Cincinnati Zoo

I hope this helps you plan your trip to the Cincinnati Zoo in a way that will be enjoyable and create unforgettable memories with your family. We loved our visit and throwing in a few of those extra things helped make this visit a memorable one for Logan.

The Cincinnati Zoo does have such amazing animals and most of all, I loved that they kept the habitats feeling natural. A lot of times I didn’t feel like I was looking at animals through a cage and I love that! This is a fantastic zoo and is guaranteed to make for a great family adventure.

So, I’m at this game, and I’m watching. Everyone is excited and cheering, so of course, I stand up and cheer with the crowd. At one point I notice the referees were throwing these little orange things down on the field. I asked my dad why those men were throwing trash on the ground because from where we were sitting, that is what it looked like.

My dad and older brother had a good laugh. Then they proceeded to try and explain to me that the ‘orange things’ were penalty flags. Let’s just say that was the extent of my knowledge of football, even into adulthood.

Fast forward to February of this year. I received an invitation from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio to come for a visit. I’ve got to be honest; my first thought was that I had no business in a football museum. I know pretty much nothing about the sport.

I mentioned the invite to Shadrach, who knows even less about football than I do (because of growing up in the Caribbean). He hesitated at first and then decided that we should go for the adventure . It is good to expose our child to something even if we don’t know much about it right?

So, the weekend came. We made it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised. There is so much more to the museum that inducted football players into the hall of fame. We learned about the history of how the game began. Also, it walks through the timeline of football all the way to the present day.

By the end of the day, I realized that we had made the right decision in making the trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. We learned so much about the sport and had such a fun family day making memories. We had so much fun that I want to share with you nine reasons why the Pro Football Hall of Fame should be on your family’s bucket list…

1 – A Love of Football is not Required

If you think you or your entire family must love football to visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame, then you are wrong. Football is a part of American history and a great past time. It doesn’t matter if you enjoy watching football or not, learning the history of it is interesting.

As I explained up above, we are not die-hard fans, and there is not one specific team we cheer on, but that did not stop us from really enjoying our visit and having fun. In fact, if nothing else it gave me a deeper appreciation for the game and a better understanding of where it started. Plus Logan learned that tackling is not the same thing as wrestling. ????

2 – The Insider’s Museum Tour is a Perfect Way to Introduce the Museum to the Whole Family

The first thing we did upon arrival at the Pro Football Hall of Fame was meet our tour guide, Harry. He took us on the Insider’s Museum Tour. To be honest, I was a little worried about how Logan would do on this tour because he is only five and has a short attention span. There were a few moments where he got distracted by other displays, but he mainly stood and listened to Harry and learned some things as well.

If there is one thing that I want to urge you to do when you visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it is to do the Insider’s Museum Tour! We all learned so much, and I honestly enjoyed it! Harry was hands down the best tour guide! In fact, this makes me wonder how much we would have missed if we hadn’t done the tour. It made our whole experience there exceptional. Yes, it does cost a little extra, but I promise you it is worth every dime!

3 – The Pro Football Hall of Fame has Great Values Worth Teaching to your Children

When you first walk into the museum, the mission statement above the wall reads:

• Honor the heroes of the game
• Preserve its history
• Promote its values
• Celebrate excellence EVERYWHERE

While it would be easy to walk right past these and not think much about them, they are essential to understanding the mission of the museum. Plus, it’s a great way to help teach your children that football has excellent values too.

I look at them more like the core values of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I love that it helps reinforce my mission to teach Logan that history is essential. Also, I think it is important to show my child that excellence really can come from anywhere and everywhere. So, I look at this visit as an opportunity to help reinforce values and morals with my child.

4 – They have the best hospitality!

Excellent hospitality and customer service are something that Shadrach and I always look for when we visit somewhere new. The thing is when we find a place that is friendly and goes above and beyond to make us feel welcome; we tend to rave about that place and want to go back again and again. Every single person that we came across that works at the Pro Football Hall of Fame was the kindest and most helpful people.

When we first arrived, and we were waiting to start our Insider’s Museum Tour, Logan wanted to go into the gift shop to look at something. I asked him to wait until later, so we could spend some time in there. One of the ladies that works at the museum overheard Logan and came up and asked me if she could take him to see the gift shop.  She took him right to the entrance, where I could still see him. Then, she let him talk to her and show her everything he found interesting. That spoke volumes to me that she would take a few minutes of her time and give her full attention to an excited little boy.

I could go on and on about all the different moments where the staff went above and beyond and made us feel like we were important. To me, that is what sets this museum apart!

5 – Lots of Hands-on and Interactive Displays

One of the main things we look for when visiting a museum is that there are hands-on displays for Logan. He is the type of kid that will touch everything and anything just because that is how he learns. So, to discover that the Pro Football Hall of Fame has lots of hands-on, interactive displays just made me love this place even more.

As we walked through the museum, there are lots of hands-on places that kids will love. Like trying on football pads, or a football helmet, or comparing your hand and muscle size to famous football players. Also, there are various touch screens throughout that allow you to read, watch and learn more about the players.

I think Logan’s favorite part was getting to the lower level of the museum and playing the EA Sports Madden Football game. In fact, I think this area becomes a huge favorite among most kids and even some adults. ????

 6 – Enjoy A Unique Theater Experience

I have to admit that the two theaters inside the museum ended up being one of our favorite parts of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They are placed in precisely the right places throughout the museum. So just when you feel like you need to sit down for a few minutes, you can stop and watch a short movie and take a rest. The thing is, these theaters provide a unique viewing experience.

The first one is the “A Game for Life” holographic theater. Our museum guide, Harry, took us into this theater during our tour. It is amazing! Logan, a wiggly little boy, sat perfectly still for the entire twenty minutes of the show. The thing that makes it so unique is that they had taken a few of the Hall of Fame Legends and turned them into holograms. So it seems like they are walking and talking in front of you. Plus the stories that they told about specific players, really helped to reinforce the values of football and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. So, when you finish in the bust room, make sure to stop and check this impressive theater out!

The second show is located right after the Super Bowl trophy (and yes it is the REAL trophy for the upcoming Super Bowl). Here is where the museum gives you a recap of the most recent Super Bowl. Since we didn’t watch the game when it happened, it was nice the way they pulled all of the highlights of the game and took you through it all. Shadrach really liked how it was done and it  turned out to be another one that kept a wiggly five-year-old’s attention. I would imagine whether you have seen the super bowl or not; this is worth your time (even if your team didn’t win ????).

7 – They Host Special Events throughout the Year that Enhance Your Experience

During our visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, there were a couple of special events going on that was a surprise to us. The first one is that the NFL draft was happening. The President of the Hall of Fame was doing some live updates on some of the draft picks for Ohio teams. While we didn’t get to see any live taping, it was awesome to see them setting it all up. Plus, it added a certain level of excitement.

The other unique event during our visit was that there were three of the Cleveland Brown’s players there doing a signing. At first, it was unclear about what was going on and we figured it cost extra to see them. Then one of the museum employees informed us that it was free. So, we got in line and met three of the Cleveland Browns!

Let’s me say, Logan was super excited, and it made his day to meet three real football players. Overall, these events made our visit seem extra unique and very memorable. Check here if you’d to see any upcoming events the Pro Football Hall of Fame may be having so that you can plan your visit! It will make your trip unforgettable!

8 – The Perfect Location

Something I didn’t realize until our tour guide, Harry, told us, is that Canton, Ohio is about eight hours or less from some major cities (like Detroit, Pittsburg, Chicago, New York, etc.). This makes it a great central location for families to make a little road trip and spend the weekend at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

So, whip out your phone and check your maps to see how far you are from Canton, Ohio. It is worth the drive to visit especially with some future additions the museum will be making…

9 – Future Expansion that will make it the Ultimate Family Experience

We learned during our visit that the Pro Football Hall of Fame is expanding and will have some exciting additions coming in 2020! As you can imagine, every year there are new players and coaches inducted into the Hall of Fame. So that means that there needs to be space to continue adding Hall of Famers in upcoming years. So, the museum itself will be expanding and changing.

Also, there will be a Hall of Fame Hotel on-site, with different themed rooms and a promenade that includes shops, interactive games, and a football-themed indoor waterpark!!! So, by 2020 the Pro Football Hall of Fame will be a huge family-friendly destination! Shadrach and I are super excited about the upcoming additions! You can read more about it here.

A Few Quick Tips to Make Your Visit Perfect

If you plan to head to the Pro Football Hall of Fame here are a few tips to make your visit enjoyable and unforgettable.

1. If you get hungry during your visit, there is a café and vending machines. We enjoyed a lovely lunch at the cafe during our visit, and the food was pretty good.
2. When you first arrive, there is a green screen and a place where they will take your picture as a family. The pictures are a great way to remember your visit and a way to get a family photo (because if you are like us, we rarely get family photos). So, be sure to stop and get a picture and check them out before you leave.
3. Be sure to consider the Insider’s Museum Tour. The little stories and information shared during this tour is not something you can learn just walking through on your own. I promise it is worth it!
4. When you are ready for a little walking break, be sure to stop in to the two theaters! They are worth the time and its included in the price of admission.

The post 9 Reasons the Pro Football Hall of Fame Needs to Be on Your Family’s Bucket List appeared first on The Rambling Ramnaths.

At this point in the winter season, we tend to have the TV and iPad are going daily (insert mom guilt). Every day, I try to make Logan shut everything off for a few hours and play. Some days he does an excellent job finding things to keep him entertained and some days I must rack my brain for ideas.

Here is a list of a few kid-friendly screen-free indoor activities (seven to be exact) that seem to work right now, and I have them on rotation. Keep in mind that my child is a five-year-old boy. So, they may not work for everyone, but hopefully, they will give you some ideas! Oh, and if you make it to the bottom of the post, there is a free printable for you!!

Board Games

Right now, the board games in our house have come out every single day! No joke! The two that Logan is loving is Trouble and Aggravation. I think we play at least two games in a row every time. I know that games are not exactly a solo activity, but they help us turn off the TV and enjoy some quality time together.

Since Shadrach and I have gotten a little tired of playing the same two games over and over, we picked up some fun kid’s card games at Target recently. Logan still has a little trouble holding all the cards, so we ordered these excellent card holders too, which have made playing them so much easier!

Building Toys

The first thing I always think of when it comes to building toys is Legos, which is a favorite in our house right now. However, we have come across a few others that Logan LOVES and are just as fun and entertaining.

• Bristle Blocks
• Magformers
• Smarty Parts
• Squigz

These are the few that we have, and every time Logan pulls them out, his imagination always runs wild, and he stays entertained for hours!

Sticker and Activity Books

Since Logan was two-years-old, he has enjoyed sitting down with a sticker book. In fact, on a cold rainy day, or a sick day, it is something simple and easy to keep little ones entertained. We’ve gone through quite a few. My mom is the one that supplies them for us, but here is one that is similar to what we have.

Also, I like to hit up the dollar tree and check their kid’s section. They almost always have some fun little activity books, and they are only $1! I had a few on hand for about a year now, but Logan has just recently started showing interest in them.

One other type of activity book that I keep on hand for days stuck in the house is dry erase books. I love these the best because we can use them over and over again!

Balloons

Okay, so you may be wondering why in the world I’m mentioning balloons, but they are one of my favorite things to pull out! This activity helps to let some energy out!

I find the balloons at the dollar store, 15 for $1. I blow up one or two and then give them to Logan. He loves to play the game of hitting the balloon up in the air or back and forth with someone. Whenever I play with him, I make the rule that the balloon can’t touch the ground.

This is such a simple activity, but it’s always a big hit!

Podcasts

Sometimes the TV ends up being more just background noise instead of entertainment. However, I do get tired of hearing the TV on. So, I will suggest a podcast. For Christmas, we got Logan a little, rugged, Bluetooth speaker so I could turn on music or podcasts without him having access to his iPad or my phone. Let me tell you, it’s been wonderful. Logan loves them right now!

A few of his favorite podcasts at the moment are:

• WOW in the World (by NPR)
• Story Pirates
• Mick Munter Monster Hunter

While he is playing with his Legos or working in an activity book, he plays one of these podcasts. They are educational and fun, so I don’t feel guilty for letting him listen for a while.

Dance Party

When all else fails, and you are desperate to get some energy out, turn on some music and have a fun little dance party! This always puts smiles on our faces, and there are usually some giggles involved too!

Some of my favorite kid’s music to dance to is The Laurie Berkner Band. If you haven’t heard these songs, run and check them out! They are original and not at all annoying! There is very few kid’s music that I can listen to on repeat, but these I enjoy, and so does Logan.

Snow Day Activity Sheet

I don’t know about you guys, but I am NOT a Pinterest mom. Don’t get me wrong, I love looking for fun things to do with my child on Pinterest but 99% of the time, I never do them. I do like finding free printables though that I can have right away and that requires little to no prep. Arts and crafts just aren’t my jam.

Well, if you feel this way too, I have a fun little printable for you! Education.com has kindly given me a fun snow day printable to share with you. You can use it if you just need a few minutes of sanity to do something, like take a shower, or just have some peace and quiet. Just print it and enjoy! Also, if you are looking for some more educational, fun activities, be sure to head over to their website and check them out!

• Also, if you have a baby or toddler, be sure to check out thinkbaby.org for some great tips and tricks for your little one! Their website is so informative and a great go-to website for all of those questions that come up when you have a baby! 

Trying to Unplug with Indoor Activities

Hopefully, this gave you a few ideas of some things you can do to turn off the TV or tablet and keep your children busy on those snowy/rainy days. Also, just know that if screen time ends up happening more than you’d like, there is no judgment here. Chances are we have some sort of screen on more than we should too!

Well, the weekend came, and it started raining our first night there and didn’t stop! Everything I had planned involved being outside. So, I had to figure out some new things to do and quickly! The hard part was that our full day there was on a Sunday and not many museums were open.

Then I remembered that there was one place I had wanted to visit and I quickly looked it up to discover it was open on Sunday! So, we headed to the American Sign Museum for the afternoon.

The American Sign Museum

When we first pulled up, I was bummed that it was raining because there are signs outside of the museum that are fun and fabulous and would have made for some great pictures. So because of the rain, we just ran inside instead.

The people at the front desk were super friendly. We paid and headed on in. Just a little tip, if you plan on going, keep an eye on Living Social because sometimes they have deals for visiting the American Sign Museum and are very worth it!

Must See Signs

Once we paid and headed inside the museum, I was super impressed! All the signs are fantastic, and they are everywhere! Some light up, some are hand drawn, and then there is everything in between. As you walk through, the museum goes through the entire history of signs. You may be thinking this place is boring, but I promise you, it isn’t.

I feel like you almost must walk through it more than once, just to see everything. There are things in every little nook and cranny, including above you. So don’t forget to look up!

When to Visit

I have to say, Sunday afternoon seemed like a great time to go. I’m not sure what it is like on the other days it is open (which you can check the times here), but there were not that many people there when we visited. I surprised given that it was raining and the museum is indoors.

So, I would say this is a great place to go when it’s raining, or on a day date. It isn’t a huge place and doesn’t take all that long to walk through. I think we may have spent close to two hours exploring the museum and that was walking through more than once.

Is the American Sign Museum Kid Friendly?

Since we visited without Logan, I can’t tell you how kid friendly the museum is. I will, however, give you my opinion if we were given the opportunity to go back with him.

This museum is not a hands-on place, and a lot of the signs are not roped off. So that being said, if you have young children that tend to touch everything, this may not be the best place to take them. I would take Logan because I think he is getting old enough to know when not to touch and I think he would have loved seeing all the signs.

So, my suggestion is, if you have older kids, it’s definitely a fun place to take them. By older I mean four and up. If you have young children (four and under), reserve this place for an adult only date.

 A Must See in Cincinnati

Even though I was bummed that the rain ruined all our plans during our weekend away, I am glad that we could visit the American Sign Museum. I consider it a must-see if you are ever in Cincinnati, Ohio. It turned out to be our saving grace for the weekend.

The post A Fun Day Date at The American Sign Museum appeared first on The Rambling Ramnaths.

So, earlier this month we decided specifically to visit a place that had Christmas lights display. We went to Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park in Hamilton, Ohio (I wrote about our visit, which you can check out here), and planned it so we could see their Holiday Lights on the Hill after dark.

Let’s just say, it did not disappoint! Logan pretty much declared he wanted to live there. I then decided that all neighborhoods should require every house to be decorated so we can live and experience that kind of magic every day during the holiday season! Ha!

Well, let me share a little bit about our visit. Also, be sure to check out the video below so you can get an idea of how fantastic this place is!

Holiday Lights on the Hill

So, what is Holiday Lights on the Hill? I’m so glad you asked! Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park dedicates a part of their park to this event and goes all out with lights. It is a drive through display. The whole ride is about two miles long. So, it’s a mile in and then you turn around and come a mile back.

I’m not sure exactly how many lights there are, but it’s A LOT! We felt like we were in a winter wonderland. Plus, one of the things I loved about it, was the lights were not in some sort of design or shape, like Santa. Don’t get me wrong, there was some of that, but there is also a lot of the trees and surrounding objects that are all decorated. That just makes the whole drive seem magical.

My favorite part is when you get to the top of the hill and circle around to come back down. The view from the top is spectacular. I wish we could have stopped and soaked it all in for a while. However other cars were driving behind us, so we had to keep moving. Bummer, I know.

A Few Tips

Here are just a few quick tips to help make your visit to Holiday Lights on the Hill even better!

1. If it is possible, let your kids wear their jammies! We forgot to bring some, so we made a quick stop at Target after dinner and picked up a pair for Logan. This way if he fell asleep on the drive home we could just put him straight to bed. Plus there is just something fun about wearing jammies in the car.
2. Be sure to play some Christmas music as you drive through. In all honesty, we did not do this because Shadrach is not a fan. However, if you do like Christmas music, this is a great time to bust it out!
3. Keep in mind that you are NOT allowed to get out of your car. There are a lot of places where you can get out and walk to see Christmas lights, but this is not one of them. For us, that is great because Ohio weather is usually cold this time of year. So, it was nice to have heat and warmth while seeing the lights.
4. Know that if you have children on each side of the car, that they will eventually see everything since you circle around at the top of the hill and come back the same way. This way, people on each side of the car see everything!
5. I’m not sure if there is a perfect time to go our not. We got there around 8 pm on a Saturday night. It was also the first weekend of December when we went, and it was not busy at all!! There were moments where there were no cars in front or behind us. Now, keep in mind, the closer you get to Christmas, the busier it will probably get.

A New Tradition

In case you can’t tell, I really loved Holiday Lights on the Hill! It was the perfect way to jump-start the holiday season. I’m hoping we are able to make it back again next year (seeing as how it is 1.5 hour away from our house, it was quite a drive).

It really is a magical experience, and we all loved it! Plus it made for a fun family day to visit the park in the afternoon, get dinner, and then head back to see the lights. In full disclosure, the fee you pay to visit the park during regular hours does not cover the cost of seeing the lights. That is extra. The post A Family Experience with Holiday Lights on the Hill appeared first on The Rambling Ramnaths.

Well, this is Ohio and the weather had different plans whenever we tried to go on a date. So, we ended up making it a family day trip, and I have to say, I’m happy we did!

Our Groupon was only good until February 2018. So, I was desperate to make sure we used it as soon as possible because winter is not very kind to us. I kept a lookout for a mild, sunny, winter day and it just so happened that a few weeks ago, everything aligned and made it possible for us to enjoy a family day outside at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park.

What is Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park?

I bet you are wondering what exactly this place is. Well, it’s a 300 plus acre park located right outside Cincinnati, Ohio in a small town called Hamilton. There are around 60 huge, unique sculptures all over the grounds as well as a museum with real, ancient sculptures dating all the way back to 1550 B.C!

There is such a fascinating history of how and why this park was founded by a man named Harry T. Wilkes, which you can read more about here. Also, I highly suggest if you do get a chance to visit, stop by the founder’s room inside the museum, as it goes into more detail about the history of the park.

Our Adventure

We left our house about 1 pm on Saturday afternoon and drove 1.5 hours to get there. So, it was close to 3 pm before we arrived, and the park closed at 5 pm. Which meant we didn’t have a whole lot of time to visit a 300+ acre park.

The first stop is at the office to pay and rent an ‘art cart’ if they are available.

Before we went, we researched and saw that they had these fun art carts, which is actually just a golf cart that you can drive around. Shadrach REALLY wanted to rent one, but with only 2 hours, we just didn’t feel it was worth the expense on this trip.

When all was said and done, it was easy to drive our car around, get out, look at all the sculptures in an area and then drive to the next section. The art cart allows you to drive on roads, made just for them, between the sculptures and I think if we ever go it to Pyramid Hill Park again, an art cart will definitely happen. ????

The Sculptures

So, the park has two parts to it. The first one, which is the largest, is all the outdoor sculptures. There are around 60 of them spread out all over the 300+ acres. Given our time constraint, we only saw a handful of them.

All of the sculptures are unique. There are various sizes, colors, and shapes. It was fun asking Logan what he thought they looked like. It turned out to be a great way to get him interested in art. If I’m honest, it made me a little more interested in art myself. I was afraid it would be kind of like I saw one piece of art and I’ve seen them all, but it was not at all like that. They are each unique and different, which made it fun.

Ancient Sculpture Museum

The second part of the park is the Ancient Sculpture Museum. I made sure that we had time for the museum because Logan kept begging to see it. I think he thought it was going to be like all of the children’s museums we’ve visited, but it’s more like a grown-up museum, aka no touching.

That said, I thought it was very impressive. In our video, we mentioned that we weren’t sure if the sculptures were real or replicas, but after reading more on the website, I’ve discovered that they are all authentic and ancient! It was so amazing to see these sculptures up close and read about them. Granted, we didn’t do much reading with a four-year-old around, but we did make it through the whole thing.

There are two sections to the museum; the ancient sculptures and then a gallery of current artists work. Overall, the museum is worth a stop in. Just be sure to let your kiddos know that they can’t touch. We told Logan no touching and, yet he still reached out to touch a sculpture right in front of the lady working there! She was kind about it, but I felt horrible and was so glad he didn’t break anything because I’m pretty sure we can’t just replace an ancient sculpture!

Tip for Visiting Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park as a Family

If you are looking for a great place to have a family day, I highly recommend Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park. It’s an awesome place to get outdoors and introduce abstract art to your little ones! Here are few tips to help make your trip a great one!

1. Make sure that the weather is going to be favorable before you go. While I’m sure some of you could make the best of it with the cold, or rainy weather, it is much more enjoyable when everyone is comfortable and not thinking about being wet or too cold.
2. Pack a lunch and eat outside! This place is a great location to be outside and have a picnic!
3. If it’s available and you can afford to, rent the art cart! I think it would be worth it! Especially since there are roads just for them all through the park.
4. Make sure to visit the museum. It is worth the time. Just remember to remind your little ones not to touch the sculptures. They are open and easily accessible by small hands.
5. When walking through the museum be sure to take a few minutes and stop into the founder’s library. The history of the park is explained in much more detail in this room than the website offers. Plus, there are chairs which would give little legs a chance to rest for a few minutes.
6. Give yourself plenty of time to go through the whole park. While I don’t think you need the entire day to make it through the park, more than two hours is necessary. So maybe give yourself half a day or more. Take your time and enjoy it!
7. There are all kinds of special events and children’s days held at the park throughout the year. So, check the calendar and consider visiting at those times. Just be aware that there is usually an extra cost involved.
8. Check out Groupon or Living Social for discounted tickets! I’ve seen Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park tickets frequently on there. It’s one way to visit a little cheaper.

These are just a few tips and thoughts to help make your visit a little more enjoyable and to make sure that you experience the park to the fullest.

The Perfect Introduction to Art

I must admit that we tend to shy away from art museums and places like those because a) we just aren’t that into art and b) we have a four-year-old that feels the need to experience everything by touching it! I believe most art museums frown upon that, however, this place intrigued me.

We enjoy being outdoors exploring and I loved that there was a considerable portion of it outside. Plus, if the sculpture is outside, in my mind that means it’s probably not breakable, and I don’t need to worry about Logan destroying it. I’m glad we found Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park, and it  turned out to be the perfect place for a family day and to introduce Logan to art!

However, with Thanksgiving comes Black Friday. I’ll be honest, one thing that I have never really been too fond of is Black Friday. I’m not a huge fan of getting up before the sun comes up (which in my opinion no one should be up and functioning that early) and pushing my way through seas of people just to save a few bucks. Sorry, that is just not my idea of fun. (For full disclosure, if it is yours, that’s awesome, and I admire you for it!)

Instead, Shadrach and I stay up until midnight and try to catch as many deals online and then we hit up cyber Monday! Online shopping for the win!

Anyway, since I’m not a fan of shopping on Black Friday, I like to find fun things we can do as a family instead! So, I thought I would share them with you and maybe help you get some ideas for something different or fun to do Friday. Here are five different ways you can spend your Friday after Thanksgiving…

#1 – Get Outside

Since we live in Ohio, this isn’t one we get to enjoy often around Thanksgiving because of the cold. However, if you live somewhere, that doesn’t usually see snow or freezing temperatures, head outside. Pack a picnic lunch with all that yummy leftover turkey and head out for a hike! It’s a great way to work off some of that big meal from the day before.

If you don’t have a place to go hiking, then head to your local playground and let your kiddos run off some energy.

Or, you could even just get outside in your yard and play a fun family game of football or soccer. We love to get out and run around as a family, no matter where it is.

If you live in or around Dayton, Ohio, here are some suggestions:

• Bruckner Nature Center
• Charleston Falls Preserve
• Ohio Caverns

#2 – Visit a Museum

We are that family that loves an excellent museum, especially if they are kid friendly! Shadrach and I loved museums before we had Logan, and we have continued to share that love with him. Of course, we tend to stay away from the ones where things could get broken, or that won’t keep an active four-year-old’s attention.

Anyway, if you also love museums, Black Friday is a great day to visit one. I think it is a hit or miss on whether they are busy and a lot of times it all depends on what time of day you choose to go. Be sure to call or check the websites ahead of time to see if they are open and if they recommend a good time to go to miss the crowds.

If you live in, or around, Dayton, Ohio, here are few family-friendly suggestions:

• Boonshoft Children’s Museum
• The Airforce Museum – This one is free!!!
• Carillon Park

#3 – See Christmas Lights at Your Local Zoo

I’ll be honest and admit that we have not done this one yet. In the years past, we have been too chicken to venture out to the zoo when it is freezing outside. Plus, Logan was young, and we just didn’t have the proper clothes for it. However, this year, we have decided to buck up and attempt to visit one of our local zoos Christmas lights show. I’ve been told that they are amazing and worth the trip.

We may not make it on Black Friday, but I do know that all the zoo’s around us start their Christmas lights display before Thanksgiving. So, check out your local zoo because there is a good chance that they might too!

I also love the fact that you can go earlier in the day and visit the animals, then stay to see the lights. I would just caution to pace yourself because all day at the zoo can wear a person out and then there isn’t any energy left to walk around and see the lights.

When we go, we will probably arrive after lunch, mid-afternoon sometime. Walk around, stop for dinner, and then enjoy the lights as soon as it gets dark. Just a suggestion. Or you could just show up for only the Christmas light display. For our local zoos, you have to pay the zoo entrance fee to see the lights so we just figured we’d try to do a bit of both when we go.

# 4 – Head to the Movie Theater

Before becoming parents, Shadrach and I had a little tradition after our Thanksgiving meal of heading to the movie theater. It was the absolute perfect time to go because no one seems to go on that day and we would usually have the entire place to ourselves! (Score!)

This year we are planning to take Logan for his very first movie theater experience, on Thanksgiving Day (I’m just hoping he’s ready to sit through an entire film, I guess we will find out). However, this would be fun to do on Black Friday also!

#5 – Go Cut Down Your Christmas Tree and Start Decorating

I have gotten the Christmas itch super early this year, and I’m ready to head out this weekend and get our tree! Something we did last year for the first time was go cut our tree. It was a fun little adventure, even if it was cold outside (Can you sense a theme? Shadrach and I are not fans of the cold, but it’s growing on us. Four years in Ohio will do that to ya.)

*Umm, This is Shadrach “The cold is definitely not growing on me!”

So, a fun thing to do is look up a local tree farm that will let you walk out, pick your tree, and cut it down. Then you can spend the weekend decorating! Plus it will give you an excuse to drink some hot chocolate to warm up, and eat a few Christmas cookies! (Although, who needs an excuse for that right?)
