We loved using Interlaken as our home base during our trip. It’s centrally located with excellent train and bus connections that made day trips to the surrounding mountains, lakes, and villages a breeze. Compared to smaller alpine towns, Interlaken offers more affordable lodging options and better access to stores and essentials — a big plus when traveling with little ones.

That said, if your dream is waking up to mountain views from a chalet balcony, then you might consider staying in a higher-altitude village like Mürren or Wengen. But even then, you’ll likely pass through Interlaken anyway for transportation connections. So why not make the most of what this family-friendly hub has to offer?

For us, Interlaken struck the perfect balance: close enough to nature for epic views and hikes, but practical enough to keep travel logistics simple — something any parent can appreciate.

Where to Stay in Interlaken with Kids

When traveling with kids, finding the right place to stay can make or break your trip. We were lucky enough to discover Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof, a cozy, affordable, and incredibly family-friendly hostel right in Interlaken. I honestly can’t recommend it highly enough — it was clean, welcoming, and full of thoughtful amenities that made life on the road easier for our family.

The location was perfect: close to shops, restaurants, and public transportation, yet tucked away enough to feel peaceful. They had a small playground on-site, free parking, a guest kitchen (so helpful for prepping picky-eater meals), and even laundry facilities. Plus, our kids loved the big backyard area to run around in after a day of adventuring.

Of course, there are plenty of other accommodation options depending on your family’s needs and budget. From vacation rentals and hotels to hostels and charming B&Bs, Interlaken has something for every family. But if you’re looking for a reliable, kid-friendly stay, Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof was a real gem.

Suggestions for What To Do in and Around Interlaken With Kids

Aare Gorge Canyon Walk, Switzerland (Aareschlucht):

The Aare Gorge Canyon Walk is a surprisingly easy hike with kids that yields some stunning views.  There is a playground at one end where the kids can make a game out of finding little green worm characters that are hidden in the rock walls.  I can’t take credit for this amazing find.  Check out the Moms, Tots Zurich Blog’s Aare Gorge Page for detailed instructions.

• Aare Gorge Tickets: 9 CHF adults, 5 CHF children 6-16, children under 6 are free
• How to Get to Aare Gorge from Interlaken: It is a 1 hour, 21 minute train ride from Interlaken to Aare Gorge.  There are two train stops, east and west.  Neither is a far walk to the gorge.  I suggest starting at the east stop and ending at the west as the west end is where the playground is.

Grindelwald First Cliff Walk  / Bachalpsee Lake Hike / Grindelwald Pfingstegg Toboggan Run

This area is awash with stunning scenery and fun stuff to keep the kiddos amused.  The Grindelwald Cable Car will take you up to Grindelwald First Cliff Walk where you will find a neat cliff walk and the start to the easy, stroller friendly Bachalpsee Lake hike.

The Pfingstegg Cable Car takes you up a different way to access the Grindelwald Pfingstegg Toboggan Run and a small playground.

To get to Grindelwald First, take the First Railway from the upper valley station (it is a 30 minute ride). Lauterbrunnen Valley Switzerland / Trummelbach Falls hike

The Lauterbrunnen Valley Switzerland is an area that we really would have liked to have spent more time exploring.  Surrounded by epic mountains, this area has idyllic Swiss villages and lots of beautiful waterfalls to explore.  The Trummelbach Falls hike from Lauterbrunnen is an easy pathway that leads to Trummelbach Falls.  Trummelbach falls is a series of waterfalls that cuts through the rock to funnel the immense volume of glacial melt off from the surrounding mountains.

Trummelbach falls might not be suitable for small children.  It is extremely loud and somewhat dark, wet and slippery.

• How to Get From Lauterbrunnen from Interlaken: Take the train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunen (20 minutes). You can catch a bus from Lauterbrunnen up the valley to Trummelbach Falls. You can also walk there (it is supposed to be a beautiful walk along a flat road, about 30 minutes).

Schilthorn / Murren Switzerland / Allmendhubel Funnicular and Playground

Taking the Schilthornbahn cable cars to the top of the Schilthorn and exploring the village of Murren Switzerland and the Allmendhubel Flower Playground at the top of the Allmendhubelbahn (funicular) was something that we all enjoyed.

The village of Murren Switzerland was easily one of the prettiest places that we have ever been.  It was picture perfect, and it looked like something out of a postcard.  This would be a great place to spend a couple of nights if you were looking for that iconic Swiss mountain experience.

Seilpark Interlaken

If your kids love climbing as much as mine do, they will love the Seilpark Interlaken. This climbing ropes park offers courses for the whole family. The minimum height for the smallest course is 3 feet, and there are options for varying levels of adventure from there.

• How to Get to the Seilpark Interlaken: This is located just outside of Interlaken. From Interlaken West Bahnhoff, take the 104 bus 2 stops towards Rugenparkstrasse. Get off at the Heimwehfluhbahn stop. You will have to walk 550 meters from where the bus drops you off.

Harder Kulm Interlaken

Taking the funicular to the top of Harder Kulm Interlaken was a surprise highlight of our trip.  We ended up here on our last day in Interlaken because the weather was bad higher in the mountains.  Harder Kulm is considered Interlaken’s “home” mountain.  Visiting Harder Kulm is one of the best things to do in Interlaken Switzerland and truly one of the easiest Interlaken family activities! 

The bottom of the Harder Kulm funicular is an easy walk, right off of the main street in Interlaken.  The panoramic views from Harder Kulm viewpoint of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz were unforgettable and there were a number of Interlaken hiking trails that are accessible from here. The viewing platform that extends off the side of the cliff giving you incredible views of both lakes is one of the best places to visit in Interlaken.

A Boat Cruise on Lake Thun Switzerland (or Lake Briensz):

If you want a laid back, super easy way to see the area and the beautiful mountains from a different perspective, a boat cruise on Lake Thun Switzerland (or Lake Briensz) is a perfect choice! 

This is a great choice for a boat cruise that allows you to hop on and hop off as you wish, so you can see the various villages and attractions around the lake at your family’s own pace. This is one of the easiest things to do in Interlaken with kids!

Thun, Switzerland:

Thun Switzerland is a super cute and off the beaten path Swiss village at the opposite end of Lake Thun from Interlaken.  You can either take the train or take a boat cruise across the lake (or do the cruise one way and the train the other.)  There are some great things to do in Thun Switzerland making it an easy daytrips from Interlaken.

• How to Get to Thun from Interlaken: Thun is a quick and incredibly scenic 30 minute train ride from Interlaken. Trains depart regularly throughout the day.

Lucerne Switzerland and the Mount Rigi Cogwheel Train

One could easily spend a few days exploring Lucerne on its own merits.  If all you have is a day, it is one of the most pleasant day trips from Interlaken.  You can either DIY this or book a tour for maximum convenience.  The city and its iconic bridge against the backdrop of the mountains are a sight to see.  

Mount Rigi is even more impressive – this was one of our favorite days of our trip!  Taking the Mount Rigi Cogwheel train to the top of Mount Rigi will yield spectacular views that you are sure to remember.

TIP:  Just like other mountains in Switzerland, taking the Mount Rigi Cogwheel Train to the top of Mount Rigi in the morning will give you the best chance of clear views.

• How to Get from Interlaken to Lucerne: The train from Interlaken to Lucerne takes approximately 2 hours. There are direct trains approximately every 60 minutes (check to see when you arrive at the train station what the most direct trains are at that time).
• How to Get to Mount Rigi from Lucerne: We took the boat from to Lucerne to Mount Rigi and it was a really fun day trip. You then can take the train back down the other side to Goldnau and take the train back to Lucerne from there.

Ballenberg Open Air Museum:

The museum features 250 traditional Swiss buildings in an idyllic mountain setting with farm traditional farm crops and gardens.  This is a really fun day out for those looking for Interlaken Switzerland activities with kids!

What to do in Interlaken When it Rains

Rain happens, and some raingear can often salvage a rainy day in Interlaken.   If you just need some ideas for what to do in Interlaken when it rains, here are a few options that should keep you that way.

St Beatus Caves:

St Beatus Caves Switzerland are a neat cave complex and series of impressive waterfalls not far from Interlaken.  There is a captivating dragon themed playground, making this a good half day option for those looking for Interlaken activities with kids.

A Chocolate Making Workshop at Funky Chocolate Club Switzerland

Your kids will be in heaven.  They can eat as much chocolate as they want!  You will all learn together the origins of chocolate, making chocolate, tempering chocolate, pouring it into molds, and of course takting chocolate!

The workshops are scheduled multiple times a day, and they take about 75 minutes.  If you can’t get in for a workshop, you can always stop in to the cafe on a rainy day for some hot chocolate and treats!

Jungfrau Park:

This will be a nice treat if your kids are just done with mountains and cutesy little villages.  This is an amusement park that has a great indoor and outdoor play area for kids as well as a variety of other shows and amusements.  It is also great for those looking for an option for what to do in Interlaken with kids on a rainy day!

Visiting the Costa Rica Caribbean Coast with our kids was truly one of the most fulfilling family vacations that we have ever taken. Yes, the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica is a little out of the way to get to, but that is part of its charm. Life moves at a slower pace here.

From our home base in Playa Chiquita Costa Rica we enjoyed visits to Cahuita National park, as well as the Jaguar Rescue center as well as taking a tour of a chocolate farm. We played on many, many beautiful beaches. Every afternoon, we enjoyed picking up fresh fruit from one of the local fruit stands and heading back to our jungle oasis to cool off by swimming in the pool.

For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, this region delivers with its laid-back atmosphere and rich diversity of wildlife. Not to mention, it’s the perfect spot for families, solo travelers, and couples alike. Getting to the Costa Rica Caribbean Coast: Travel Options and Tips

Depending on where you are heading to in Eastern Costa Rica, it is about a 6 hour drive from San Jose (where you will likely fly in.)  There are a few different ways to get here, depending on your preferences:

Flying to the Caribbean Coast: 

 Sansa Air operates daily flights between San Jose and Limon, Costa Rica.  From Limon, you will have to arrange a private taxi or shuttle to continue your journey down the coast.  Because these are small planes, there are strict limits on luggage weight, so this might not be the best option if you are a heavy packer.

Driving from San Jose 

You can rent a car and drive!  This is what we did.  The drive between San Jose and Playa Chiquita Costa Rica (where we stayed) takes you across the country on Route 32 and through Braulio Carillo National Park.  It did take a little patience.  Google Maps tells me that this drive should take 3 hours, and you essentially need to double that.  The driving in Costa Rica wasn’t difficult, but it was sometimes slow going and took some time.  This is a great option if you want the freedom to be able to explore independently.  

If the drive is a little long, you can break it up by staying a night in one of the eco lodges after you get through Braulio Carillo.  You would not want to be ending your drive in the dark, so if you are not getting started before lunchtime, you might want to consider an overnight stay anyways.

Shuttle Services and Public Transport: 

If driving is not for you, a shuttle might be a great option for you.  Because of the high cost of required rental car insurance, taking a shuttle honestly doesn’t usually cost much more than renting a car.  You save the stress of navigating, and can just sit back and enjoy the drive.

Caribe Shuttle, Interbus and Pleasure Ride all operate daily shuttle service to this area.  The cost is around $50/adult, depending on how far down the coast you are heading.

Where to Stay on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica

Playa Chiquita Costa Rica/Playa Punta Uva 

The little town of Playa Chiquita was a perfect base for our last Costa Rica travel adventure on the Costa Rica Caribbean side.  It is centrally located just 10 minutes down the coast from Puerto Viejo and 30 minutes from popular Cahuita National Park.  The town has a variety of appealing local restaurants and a grocery store. 

Punta Uva Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica for families with small children, and it is easily accessible from Playa Chiquita. This hip little town has just the right balance of enough restaurants and shops to provide variety without being overwhelming.  It definitely has a laid back, small town vibe. Lots of folks get around on bicycles and everyone seemed to know each other. When we return again, this is definitely where we will stay.

Cahuita

Cahuita is a larger town that is north on the Costa Rica Caribbean coast from Puerto Viejo and Playa Chiquita.  It is a mid-sized town that is a little less busy and party-like than Puerto Viejo, but offers more restaurants and shopping opportunities than Playa Chiquita.  

The main draw for folks to stay in Cahuita is its proximity to Cahuita National Park.  There is a short walking trail on the south end of town that will take you right into the park.  Cahuita National Park has some epic beaches.  Cahuita would be a great option for someone who wanted a larger town with more amenities than Playa Chiquita or Manzanillo, but less of a party atmosphere than Puerto Viejo.

Playa Manzanillo

Manzanillo is a sleepy, laid back little beach town at the far southern end of the coast.  The main road down the coast ends here, turning into walking trails that will take you into the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge.  The town is small, with limited restaurant and shopping options.  

The main reason to stay here is the fact that there are many stunning jungle lodges to stay in and the prices are very reasonable.  If you are looking to stay in a stunning jungle setting or for a sleepy beach town where you will have the Playa Manzanillo beach all to yourself, this is a perfect spot.  For those looking for nightlife or any sort of shopping or entertainment, Manzanillo will likely be too quiet for your tastes.

Puerto Viejo

When we went into Puerto Viejo for dinner or shopping, it was fine, but I think it would have been too busy for us to use as a home base to stay.  If nightlife is not important to you, I would consider staying in one of the smaller towns and making trips to Puerto Viejo as needed.

Top Beaches on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast for Every Type of Traveler

The Costa Rica Caribbean coast is home to some of the most picturesque and varied beaches in the country. Whether you’re a family looking for calm waters, a couple seeking a quiet spot for relaxation, or a solo adventurer in search of rugged beauty, there’s a beach for everyone. Let’s take a look at some of the top beaches to visit.

Punta Uva Beach 

If you’re traveling with kids, Punta Uva Beach should be at the top of your list. It was located close to our lodging at Angler’s Lair. This sheltered bay is the perfect spot for families, thanks to its calm, shallow waters and soft white sand. Fringed by palm trees, the beach is picture-perfect and has a laid-back vibe. We spent a whole day here, building sandcastles and swimming in the gentle waves. It’s quiet and uncrowded, making it ideal for relaxing with little ones.

Although there’s a small snack bar nearby, it’s a good idea to pack a picnic if you’re staying for the day, as amenities are limited. Keep in mind there are no restrooms on-site, so plan accordingly if you’re visiting with kids.

Punta Uva Arrecife

Playa Punta Uva Arrecife is just down the coast from Playa Punta Uva.  A dirt road connects the two. This beach is of almost equal beauty as Playa Punta Uva, but it is even less well known and less touristy.  If you are looking for a beautiful beach that is really off the tourist path, this is it. There is a small restaurant here, as well as a few lodging choices if you want to stay right on the beach in your own little piece of paradise. 

Playa Blanca Costa Rica, Cahuita National Park 

Playa Blanca is located inside the popular Cahuita National Park.  It was a relatively short and easy 15-30 minute walk from the town of Cahuita down the main coastal trail in the park.  The trail was flat and we could have done it 

Playa Blanca is truly spectacular. It had bright white sand, beautiful palm trees and ample wildlife spotting opportunities (we saw a sloth, racoons, monkeys and snakes during our short visit.)  The waves were a good size for small children, and the sand dropped off very gradually.

A few little notes about Playa Blanca/Cahuita beach.  The only bathroom was back down the trail at the entrance to the park.  There were no restaurants or food nearby. We were also harassed here by gangs of wild racoons who desperately wanted any scrap of food that we had.  They were kind of cute at first, but my husband got tired of fending them off after a while (while not vicious, they did keep creeping ever closer to our beach blanket when they thought we weren’t looking.  Whether they actually would have hurt us, I do not know.)

Playa Manzanillo

This beach is at the end of the road.  Literally. The town of Manzanillo is where you come when you want to get away from it all.  It consists of a small collection of hotels, eco lodges and small cafes, pressed between the jungle wilderness and the ocean.  The beach is beautiful, and we had it just about all to ourselves for the afternoon. The beach is nice for kids, as the waves were relatively small and it was very uncrowded.  

Honestly, it is not the prettiest beach on the coast.  It only has a few sparse palm trees at the back instead of the dense, lush jungle that many of its neighboring beaches are lined by.  For us, it was a pleasant place to picnic and play in the sand for a couple hours at the end of the road.

Playa Chiquita 

Playa Chiquita is a beach best known for its natural beauty and tranquil vibe. It’s a small, less-developed beach that’s great for exploring, especially if you enjoy walking along the shore and finding quiet spots to sit. The waters here can be a little rough for swimming, especially for young kids, but the beach is ideal for nature lovers and those who want to explore tide pools during low tide.

It’s also conveniently located near several eco-lodges and vacation rentals, making it a great base for anyone staying in the area.

Playa Blanca (Cahuita National Park)

If you love wildlife and want to combine beach time with a bit of adventure, Playa Blanca in Cahuita National Park is the spot for you. The beach is known for its bright white sand and clear blue water, making it one of the most beautiful beaches on the Caribbean coast. It’s also incredibly family-friendly, with calm waters and a gradual drop-off, making it perfect for younger swimmers.

The real highlight of Playa Blanca, though, is the chance to see wildlife. During our visit, we spotted monkeys, sloths, raccoons, and more, right from the beach! You’ll need to walk a short trail through the park to get there, but the flat, easy path makes it accessible even if you have young children in tow.

Playa Negra

For something a little different, check out Playa Negra, known for its striking black sand. This beach is a popular surf spot, but it’s not the best for swimming, especially if you’re traveling with small children. The waves can be strong, so it’s better suited for surfers or those who just want to take in the scenery.

We stopped here briefly to let the kids play in the unique black sand, which was a fun experience in itself. Even though it’s not a prime swimming beach, Playa Negra is worth a visit for the unique landscape and photo opportunities.

The main trail through the park runs along the coast, making it an easy, family-friendly walk with stunning ocean views.

During our visit, we saw everything from raccoons to monkeys swinging in the trees, and even spotted a sloth hanging lazily above the path. If you’re lucky, you might also spot sea turtles nesting on the beaches, depending on the time of year. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera, because the wildlife here is truly spectacular.

Jaguar Rescue Center

Just a few minutes from Puerto Viejo, the Jaguar Rescue Center is one of the most memorable stops on the Caribbean coast, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Despite the name, the center doesn’t actually have jaguars anymore, but they do rehabilitate injured and orphaned animals such as baby sloths, monkeys, and toucans.

The guided tours take you behind the scenes to learn about the center’s conservation efforts, and you’ll get to see many of the animals up close. We were lucky enough to visit during feeding time, which gave us an even better look at the baby monkeys. The kids were especially thrilled by the baby sloths, which were the stars of the show. Morning tours are best, as the animals tend to be more active.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving at Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge

For those who love to explore the underwater world, Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is a hidden gem. The coral reefs in this area are home to vibrant marine life, making it a fantastic spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. You can arrange a guided tour to explore the reefs and spot tropical fish, sea turtles, and rays.

The refuge itself is also a great place to hike, with trails that take you through dense jungle and along the rugged coastline. Chocolate Tours in Playa Chiquita

Who doesn’t love chocolate? One of the highlights of the Caribbean coast is the chance to visit local cacao farms and learn about the chocolate-making process. Chocoart, a small farm near Playa Chiquita, offers tours that show how cacao is harvested and transformed into the chocolate we all know and love. The tour ends with a tasting session, where you’ll get to sample a variety of chocolate products, from traditional drinking chocolate to more modern confections.

The kids were fascinated by the entire process, and it was fun for all of us to learn more about this sweet treat, which has deep roots in the region’s history.

Cahuita National Park Snorkeling and Beach Day

In addition to wildlife spotting, Cahuita National Park is known for having some of the best snorkeling on the Costa Rica Caribbean coast. The park is home to one of the most well-preserved coral reefs in the country. To protect the reef, you’ll need to book a guided tour, but it’s well worth it for the chance to see colorful fish, sea turtles, and even nurse sharks.

We took the same precautions we would in any unfamiliar destination, but at no point did we feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

While Puerto Viejo does have a more lively, party atmosphere at night, especially around the main strip, the smaller towns like Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva offer a quieter, family-friendly environment.

As always, it’s best to exercise extra caution when traveling with children. Here are a few more family-specific tips:

• Keep an eye on kids at the beach: While many beaches are family-friendly, the ocean can be unpredictable. Stick to safe, calm swimming spots.

These are easily accessible just outside of the town of La Fortuna Costa Rica and the Arenal Volcano (an area that many people include in their Costa Rica itinerary).

The Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park is easily accessible by hikers of all abilities, including toddlers.  Crossing the suspension bridges gave us all a thrill, and a birds eye view into the rainforest canopy.

How to Get to Mistico Hanging Bridges Park

Getting to Mistico Park Costa Rica from La Fortuna is a simple thing.  If you have your own vehicle, the park is approximately 30 minutes from downtown La Fortuna.  Head west on 142 until you cross the dam across Lake Arenal.  You will make a right hand turn just after crossing the dam and follow the signs to the park.

We did not have a car, so we chose to book the transportation provided by the park.  We booked on their website as a part of our tour.

There are not any regular, local buses that head to Mistico Park Costa Rica.  A taxi fare is approximately $20-$25 each way.  There are many tour operators that will combine the tour and transportation together.  This is often a more budget friendly option if you don’t have your own vehicle.

How Much is the Mistico Hanging Bridges Entrance Fee?

Here is the Mistico Hanging Bridges entrance fees (as of 2024):

• Adults: $32
• 11-18 years old: $21
• $65 and over: $26
• 6-10 years old:  Free

There are a couple options that you can add to your Mistico Hanging Bridges Entrance Fee:  

• Lunch:  $19/person
• Transportation from La Fortuna: $26/person

You can also book a tour to see the park.  We highly suggest this option (for reasons detailed further down). The tour costs below include the entrance fees, so this is really a great value:

• Adults: $48
• 11-18 years old: $36
• 65 and over: $42
• 6-10 years: $18

What Options are There for Hanging Bridges La Fortuna

There are currently two options for those looking for the iconic Costa Rica hanging bridges experience while visiting Arenal/La Fortuna: Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park and Sky Adventures.

We did not visit Sky Adventures on our trip, so I can’t comment directly on their offerings.  A little poking around on the internet shows me that the admission prices to visit the hanging bridges there are a little more expensive. 

Sky Adventures does offer some other adventure experiences (a zipline, and aerial tram and an adventure course) so if you are also looking to do some of these things on your Costa Rica vacation, you might consider a visit here instead. 

Our Arenal Hanging Bridges Hike

Our hike through the Mistico Hanging Bridges Park was one of the highlights of our amazing trip to Costa Rica!  The park consists of a series of 16 bridges.  Six of them hanging suspension bridges as high as 150 feet in the air!  The bridges are connected by two miles of smooth, well-maintained trails.

During our hike, we saw a huge variety of wildlife. We saw many species of birds, colonies of sleeping bats, a HUGE spider, families of coati, and leaf cutter ants (which my daughter was just fascinated with.)

The true highlight of our animal experiences during our Arenal hanging bridges hike was seeing a mother sloth up in a tree with a baby clinging on to her.  My son had been hoping to see a sloth for the entire trip after reading a book about sloths before we left.   This was for him the highlight of the whole trip!

The bridges themselves were amazing, and crossing them gave us a really unique perspective of the rainforest canopy.  They did wiggle a little bit when we crossed, but we felt very safe at all times.   The park is very careful about how many people are on the bridges at one time.  There was also a monitor at the beginning of each bridge to make sure, and all of the bridges looked to be strong and in good repair.

We also saw a beautiful waterfall during our hike, which was a great opportunity to stop and take this amazing family photo!

A couple of notes about the Arenal hanging bridges hike:

• The park is located in a rain forest, which means that there is a better chance that it will be raining than not.  It was raining on the day that we went and it was still beautiful.  The forest and clouds were sometimes covered in fog and mist and it made them beautiful and mysterious looking.
• Bring a rain coat.
• Plan on wearing proper footwear.  While the trails are generally not bumpy, parts CAN be steep and slippery, particularly if it is raining.

Why You Should ABSOLUTELY Book A Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Tour

You might be looking at all of the options for Arenal tours, wondering where your vacation funds will give you the biggest return on investment.   An Arenal hanging bridges tour should be on the top of your list.

Yes, you CAN visit the Mistico park Costa Rica on your own and explore the bridges.  You MIGHT see some animals during your hike, but I guarantee that you will not see the huge variety of animals that we did.

Our guide for our Mistico hanging bridges tour was AMAZING!  His trained eyes picked out many animals in the trees and in other hidden spots that we NEVER would have found on our own.  When he found an animal, he set up a telescope focused on the animal so we could look and get a close-up view.  This was especially exciting for the kids because they couldn’t always see them otherwise.

For the most part, the animals were not readily viewable right on the side of the trail.  Our guide was constantly working hard to find as many animals as he could for us to see and learn about.  This allowed us the freedom to enjoy the experience instead of trying to look for animals that we probably wouldn’t have found anyways.

My initial reaction after reading many reviews on Tripadvisor for visiting various Arenal hanging bridges was that the folks who had hired a guide all had AMAZING experiences.   Those that did not were less enthusiastic. After having our own amazing experience, I can tell you that hiring a guide made a WORLD of difference for us.

We booked our tour directly through the Mistico Hanging Bridges Park website. We loved the experience. They picked us up at our hotel and brought us back, reliably on time. There are many tour operators who offer this tour, and the benefit of booking one of these is that they are offered in combination with other tours, which can be a great value.

The cost was not huge in relation to the enhanced experience that having a guide provided.  If you are going to take the time to visit, we highly recommend taking a tour (especially if you have kids) because you will get so much more out of the whole experience.

Pigalle, Paris: History and First Impressions

Pigalle is the Paris Red Light District.  Soldiers during World War II nicknamed the place “pig alley” because of its seedy reputation, but it was actually named after a French sculptor.

Pigalle has had a long reputation of being a place where prostitutes were stationed on every street corner and criminals abounded, but in our recent visit, we did not many signs of illegal activity.

Perhaps this is due to recent efforts by the French government to clean up this popular tourist destination in Paris.

When you take the Metro to the Pigalle stop, you emerge right in the center of the action, near the world famous Moulin Rouge.   My husband and I came here for an evening stroll on our recent trip to Paris.  We came mostly out of curiosity and a desire to snap a tourist photo of the Moulin Rouge.

We weren’t sure what to expect.  Our only foray into a red light district had been in Amsterdam, and while it has been interesting, the pot smoking and legalized prostitution gave it a little bit of an out of control sort of feeling (probably why people like going there for wild parties.)

Pigalle had a classier sort of feeling than the feeling that we had gotten from Amsterdam.  It was cleaner.  There were more people walking around that seemed like they were having a relaxing night out with friends for dinner and some drinks and less people that looked like they were hell bent on a wild party.

There were many normal, middle-aged-looking couples, dressed up nicely, that looked like they would belong in a classy neighborhood in New York city.

Of course, there were still lots of sex shops, sex shows and the like.  It felt like a place where one could straddle the line between normal and risque…like you could dip your toes into the dark pool that is the sultry seductive pool of Paris’ other side.

Is the Pigalle Area Safe?

Reading about Pigalle and the Paris Red Light District online, I noticed that there have been some safety concerns reported there.  I am not sure how recent some of these scams and such have been happening.

I am under the impression that there has been a major effort in the last few years to clean this area up, and indeed, we felt very safe in this area at all times.

As a precaution, I would suggest making sure to take your partner or a friend with you in this area if you are unsure or feel unsafe.  Many of the scams seem to involve a single person being lured into a bar or club for a drink by a beautiful woman, and then being forced to pay a ridiculously high bill.

Use common sense; if there aren’t any other patrons in the bar or restaurant and all you see is the restaurant’s employees inside, pick a different place.  Stay in places where there are other people around you.  I have also read that things like this are less likely to happen if you are with a date or your spouse.

Before Dinner: What to See in Monmarte and the Pigalle Paris Red Light District

Here are some ideas for a what to do in Paris in the Monmarte area and the Paris Red Light District before dinner.

Sacre Couer Basilica

Start your evening by heading up to the steps of Sacre Couer Basilica to see the sunset.  The view of Paris is amazing from here, and this is a wonderful way to start your evening (you can get to Sacre Couer by taking the Metro to the Anvers metro stop and walking north up Rue de Steinkerque to get to where you can either walk up the stairs to the foot of the basilica or pay a small fee of a couple Euros to take a tram).

The Basilica itself is open seven days a week until 10:30pm, so while you are here waiting for the sunset, you will have time to check it out.

Where to Stay Near the Paris Red Light District

Here is my short list of researched and recommended hotels in or near the Paris Red Light District.

• Hotel Rochechouart Paris:  This smart choice near Monmarte boasts budget prices with luxury touches (lookup on Tripadvisor or Booking.com).  The hotel has rooms in a variety of sizes including family “suites” with two connecting rooms.  I loved the fact that it has a rooftop terrace with Eiffel tower views.  Reviews touted a great, free breakfast with a variety of hot and cold items.
• Le Regent Monmarte: This is a hotel/hostel is located in a beautiful old building in Paris that is close to the Anvers Metro stop (lookup on Tripadvisor or Booking.com).  The completely renovated property has a wide variety of rooms to accommodate all sizes and configurations of families, from singles to quadruple rooms (some of the rooms have beautiful views of Sacre Couer.  If you can get one of these, do it!)  Free breakfast and shared kitchen round out this rare find.  This is DEFINITELY on our shortlist next time we stay in Paris!
• Grand Hotel de Turin: This 3 star favorite is on a quiet street near Monmarte (read reviews on Tripadvisor here or check on Booking.com). This historic hotel has 52 balcony rooms (do note – not all rooms have air conditioning…read the descriptions carefully). They do offers triples and quads for families as well as connecting rooms, which I love!
• Apart’hotel Adagio Paris Monmarte: This apartment hotel will provide all of the comforts of home and is conveniently located close to the Anvers metro stop (check on Tripadvisor or Booking.com).  The bright, airy apartments can accommodate up to four people with enough space to feel comfortable.  Cooking in its small but well equipped kitchen can save you money on food, which can get expensive in Paris.  A solid choice!
• Le Pigalle Paris: This small, boutique hotel is a great choice for those looking to stay right at the heart of the variety of restaurants and nightlife in Pigalle Paris (book on on Tripadvisor or Booking.com)!   This hotel has a hip, vintagey local vibe to it.  It is decorated with local art, antiques and kitschy odds and ends.

Entertainment Options in the Paris Red Light District

Lapin Agile

While this is technically not off of the Pigalle Metro stop, it is only two stops away and I couldn’t resist listing it as a great stop for a budget evening.  35 Euros for the show and a drink is a great deal by Paris standards.

This traditional cabaret show includes singing, comedy in a traditional French cabaret atmosphere.  This is not an adult show, there is no nudity, but it promises to be a good time.

• Metro Stop: Lamarck/Culaincourt (2 stops away from Pigalle)
• Cost: 35 Euros for show and 1 drink (extra drinks 7 Euro)

The Moulin Rouge

A splurge for sure, dinner and the cabaret show will run you approximately 175-200 Euros per person.  This is the mother of all French cabaret shows (and something that I haven’t experienced, but would like to, at least once.)  Even if you aren’t going to see the show, this is a must-see photo opportunity for anyone visiting the Paris Red Light District.

• Cost: 245 euros for show with dinner and champagne; starting at 133 euro for the show only without dinner

Le Trianon Concert Hall

This epic and stunningly beautiful concert venue is located in Monmarte (not quite in Pigalle, but close).  The theater is worth seeing on its own.  It is packed full of ornate, baroque architecture.  Seeing a concert here would certainly by a highlight of any trip to Paris!

Les Trois Baudettes

This Pigalle entertainment staple offers a music hall with a stage, two bars and a restaurant.  They feature a huge variety of French musicians in all genres.  This is a great place to enjoy some drinks (great happy hour deals) and listen to music in a local environment.

• Cost: Varies, not expensive (many shows seemed to be between 10-20 euros)
• Hours: Restaurant open 6p-midnight on concert nights (happy hour until 8p), music starts at 8p

Chez Michou

This Paris entertainment institution is a must-see if you like either Drag or a good time in the Paris Red Light District. This is an authentic French Cabaret show run by Mr. Michou who is a character in himself. Parts of the show are in French, so some of it might be better suited to native speakers, but it is still an authentic cabaret experience in a small, intimate space.

• Hours: Wed-Sunday. Doors open at 8:15pm, show at 10:15pm

Recommended Bars in the Paris Red Light District

La Fourmi

Unpretentious and laid back with a great local atmosphere.  Great burgers.  Affordable.  A nice bar that doesn’t have the same party atmosphere as some of the other bars in the area (no dance parties or DJ’s.)

Le Machine de Moulin Rouge
