The Study In order to understand the impact of social vulnerability on pediatric patients with head and neck cancers, researchers studied a cohort of 6228 patients, ages 0 through 17, who had been identified as having HNCs. The researchers divided the patients into four groups based on their level of social vulnerability using the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Vulnerability Index. The four groups were: “low”, “medium”, “high”, and “very high”. The study was conducted over a five year period and studied the receipt of care and survival time of the patients in each group. The results of the study showed that, compared to the “low” social vulnerability group, patients in the “very high” social vulnerability group had significantly lower likelihood of receiving care from various medical professionals. Additionally, the survival time for patients in the “very high” group was approximately one year lower than patients in the “low” social vulnerability group.
