G7 Summit 2021: More than a few famous faces have graced our cameras, but perhaps none more recognisable than President Joe Biden. During the G7 meetings in Cornwall, we were tasked with photographing the visiting dignitaries as they landed at Newquay Airport.

Charity events

Surfers Against Sewage: This Is An Ocean Emergency: We’re big believers that great photography not only has the power to entertain, but to inform, engage and ultimately to create positive change. It’s been our pleasure to work with Surfers Against Sewage over the years. On this occasion, we went to governments front door to hand in a petition demanding tighter legislation around sewage outlets and water companies. If that sounds a little scary, don’t worry! We had the support of two schools of committed and passionate young activists and Olympian Hannah Mills!

Phytome: Cornwall is a hub of innovation and business leadership and throughout the past few years, we’ve been on hand to document the fantastic initiatives that come to life in our county. This time was an mixer and speaking event hosted by Phytome!

Paul David Smith is a professional photographer who didn't initially set out to pursue a career in photography. He gradually fell into the profession through upgrading his digital cameras over time and investing in his first DSLR camera, a Nikon D80. Despite initial frustrations with his equipment, Paul became increasingly interested in photography and honed his skills over time. He turned professional in 2008, specializing in events, product, and portrait photography, and has successfully made a living from his craft ever since.

Charlotte Dart is a Cornwall-based photographer who has been fascinated with cameras from a young age. Lee Searle discovered photography at age 17 while recovering from an illness. It became his therapy and focus during his recovery and later became a dominating factor in his life. Lee started working in the photography industry, managed and worked in various photography outlets before becoming a full-time photographer. Despite the challenge of going from a full-time wage packet to holding a camera with no wages, Lee had passion and time on his side, which helped him make the transition to full-time photography.

Surfers Against Sewage: We’ve worked with Surfers Against Sewage on quite a few of their campaigns over the last few years, but the project we’re most proud of involved knocking on government’s front door and demanding more action.

Alongside an army of school children, Olympian Hannah Mills and the SAS team, we travelled to Downing Street to hand in a petition box containing the signatures of the thousands of people across the UK who are fed up with polluted waters.

In the preceding months, we’d worked with SAS on content for their social media and website campaigns to gather these petitions, creating video and photo content. We then had the pleasure of documenting the action when the big day in London came.

Domino’s Pizza: It’s not everyday that we get up close and personal with a jetpack clad pizza delivery driver (yes, you read that right!) but that’s precisely what happened when we joined forces with Here, Now Films to shoot a viral PR stunt for the top dogs of dough. On hand throughout the day to provide the photography stills and BTS, we had a wicked time chasing a jetpack across the rolling hills of Glastonbury as the driver delivered a pizza right into the middle of the iconic Glastonbury festival. A repost of one of our photos by Sir Elton John was the cherry on top!

FatFace: In 2023, FatFace launched into uncharted territory and hosted their first ever family festival in Cornwall. Rock Up and Sea was a screaming success and featured a day packed to the gills with FatFace’s adventure everyday lifestyle. Hosted by legendary explorer George Bullard, they brought surfing lessons, delicious food, sustainability talks, foraging walks, and of course awesome music from a series of headliners (oh, and a guest appearance from the one and only Dame Kelly Holmes)

FatFace invited us down for the day, entrusting us with capturing the magic of the day in photography, film, and social media content!

If you’ve not heard of CBD by now it might be wise to look up and double check you’ve not been living under a rock. Having taken the health and fitness world by storm over the past few years, this clever little plant extract boasts an incredible portfolio of benefits and through its many forms offers remedies to no small number of life’s daily struggles. Coming from the cannabis plant, cannabidiol (or CBD for short) isn’t psychoactive, is perfectly safe to use and is most well-known for relaxing the mind and body, without any of the funny business you may imagine when thinking of its parent plant. When I was asked by Ethica CBD, a Cornish based company out to ensure ethically sourced CBD of the highest quality is available to all, to help them market a brand new massage oil, I jumped at the chance to get a close up look and see just how good this stuff really is.

The task was to organise a product photography shoot, building a deck of images which would stand as testament to the quality of the oil whilst also inspiring massage therapists to partner with Ethica and offer a new CBD service. So far so good I thought, commercial photography is a staple of my work and specifically product photography is something I know my way around very well. As it was a massage oil I’d be photographing, it stood to reason that we’d need a massage therapist, enter the very talented Louise from SaunaPod studio, and a volunteer model willing to be photographed in not much more than a towel. This was to be Gail Muller, who amongst her many accolades is a long distance hiker, public speaker, author, and Ethica ambassador. She’s lived with chronic pain for most of her life so her comments on the oil’s effectiveness are ones to stand by – and very fortunately for such an extremely intimate shoot, she’s someone I’ve worked with a lot in the past and feel fortunate to call a close personal friend.

Concerns of intimacy aside, there was still the slight hiccup that  although I knew lifestyle and product photography very well, trying not to disrupt a relaxing massage treatment and still capture all the right shots was not something I had too much experience with. Nevertheless, I had a background in photographing on film sets which by its nature requires a photographer to be as non-disruptive as can be, and I had full faith that Gail and I knew each more than well enough for her to tell me if I things were getting a touch to close. With that in mind, we got cracking.

I’ve not known Gail all that long, about 3 years at the time of writing, but anyone who’s fortunate enough to spend time with her quickly learns that times moves a little faster around Gail than the rest of us. Ever wrapped up in 4 tasks at once, she manages to squeeze more into the time she has each day than physics thought possible. In real terms that means that every minute you get with Gail feels like an hour of friendship. For Gail, it means that she’s constantly busy, always three steps ahead and rarely ever gives herself time to unwind. I’m sure she won’t mind me saying that other than sea swimming (which she does even in the depths of winter), reaching for the reset button and having some switch off time isn’t often a top priority for her. No matter who you are, everyone needs a moment every now and then to slip out from under the yoke of pressure we put on ourselves, both in our professional and personal lives, and recharge with a touch of self-care. An afternoon with Louise at SaunaPod studios was a perfect opportunity for Gail to take a second to breathe and for me to get some cracking shots for Ethica at the same time.

Arriving at Louise’s studio just outside Penryn is itself a part of the treatment. Close enough to the town that it’s easy to find, it’s just far enough away and buffered from the hubbub by a winding bank of trees to feel sublimely secluded.  First up was a 30 minute session in Louise’s chromotherapy pod. If you’re not quite sure what that entails – I certainly didn’t –I’ll give you a quick rundown. Essentially, chromotherapy uses light, of various colours, to bring physical and mental healing. Causing vibrations at a range of frequencies deep in your body’s cells, it’s characterised by a deep relaxation and a stimulation of the nervous system which is thought to bring your hormones, brain, and body back into balance. For someone who, as a professional photographer, spends their time chasing, capturing, and trying to emulate perfect light conditions, I was fascinated by the idea that exposing skin to light could have such dramatic health benefits.

My enthusiasm aside, this part of the treatment was for Gail alone. Chromotherapy relies on light getting on as much of the skin as possible, so I twiddled my thumbs next door whilst Gail got into the pod, then came in to take a few photos of the lights playing across her face before leaving Gail and letting the pod work its wonders. Afterwards she told us that 30 minutes in there felt like an entire day lying on a hot beach, a cosy warmth having flooded her body and left in its wake a deep and lasting relaxation.

Speedy beach day over, we were on to the star of the show, an upper body and facial massage from Louise using Ethica’s brand spanking new CBD massage oil. Designed especially for use by professional massage therapists the photo shoot was not only to capture images of it in use, but to field test the oil in the hands of a skilled practitioner. What ensued was 30 minutes of blissfully relaxing treatment, that even as I write this article, has me sinking a little deeper into my office chair just at the thought of it.

Now you might assume that this could be a little awkward, just you and a trusted massage therapist in a very intimate space, trying to relax whilst a photographer frequently punctuats the silence with the painfully stark staccato clack of the shutter. From the view of a professional photographer, it was actually an interesting challenge, forcing me to be acutely aware of how often I was hitting the shutter button, not a regular issue with product photography where volume is king and having every conceivable shot to play with later is almost always a given. Mercifully, both Gail and Louise assured me after that it wasn’t as distracting as it felt, and I can personally attest to just how hypnotic it was to watch Louise work. At one point I found myself following Louise’s instruction to take a deep breathe. Standing there, fully clothed with camera in hand as I was, I nonetheless almost felt like I was having a treatment myself. For that, full credit goes to Louise for having created such a serene space within her studio, and for the incredible talent she has for putting people at ease and eking out every drop of stress from mind and body.

As for actually conducting the photography shoot, light was a key concern, as it always is with any professional photography. Inside Louise’s studio is a sombre darkness which not only lends it an atmosphere of restfulness but makes it a veritable nightmare to photograph too.  To ensure I could pick out my subjects and the oil without glaringly unsettling bursts of flash, I used soft boxes over the flashes to preserve the ambience and give me beautiful, diffuse light on the pair throughout the treatment. I also made sure to shoot with quite a wide aperture, not a usual tactic with product photography where you want to maximize details, but for this shoot I wanted to tell the story of the oil in use, lending a dream-like cosiness to the images with soft, blurred backgrounds. When it was over, I had a set of very considered photographs, which both highlighted the massage oil and communicated the peacefulness of SaunaPod studio’s massage room.

At this point my mind felt like treacle, having been following along with Gail’s treatment I’d inherited a good deal of second hand tranquillity and for Gail, it felt like having had the plug pulled on a tank of stress and tension. Louise was quick to mention that whilst the treatment went a little different than usual (my presence being the prime culprit), the massage oil was incredibly good. From her technical comments, it seemed clear that the oil was of fantastic quality, had excellent glide over the muscles, and resulted in top notch massages. Not to mention the myriad of added benefits that CBD brings along with it.

Look at the media surrounding outdoor spaces and you’ll likely see images of strong and youthful characters, bravely forging on along untrodden paths. There’s a fallacy about adventures that they exist somewhere over there, in a remote corner of the world populated by people much braver than everyone else who’s fitness and conviction take them to places others simply couldn’t reach. You simply don’t see a lot of people going on adventures of a less grandiose nature and using the outdoors as a space to recover, work through their feelings and build up their strength. The outdoors can often feel like a destination you earn the right to be in and less like the non-judgemental space it should be. And yet, if lockdown has taught us anything it’s the healing and respite that time outdoors brings us that we have most dearly missed over the last two years.

This makes Gail Muller exciting. Not that she is defined by her condition – her social media is also a teeming hub of countryside information and practical tips for aspiring adventurers. But by not being afraid to be vocal about the things she struggles with and showcase her vulnerability she’s opening a space that the picture perfect lives and daring exploits of ‘adventurers’ have previously left closed.

Throughout her childhood, Gail was always outside. From gig rowing to walking sections of the Southwest Coast Path near her Cornish home, she was out in the elements every second she could be, making the twinge in her back and creeping loss of movement as symptoms of her chronic pain steadily grew throughout her twenties all the more devastating. Gail describes chronic pain as a slow realisation that you’ve got something wrong that isn’t going to get any better. Nothing you do can achieve a resolution of your pain, and so she found a way to accept it as a companion, working with her pain, rather than fighting it, in order to thrive.

Following this radical change in perspective, Gail has completed the 630 mile SWCP, the 2200 mile Appalachian trail South Bound (a trail so gruelling that more people have summitted Everest than reached its end) and has plans to hike the Tour de Mont Blanc this year. Back in 2021 however, she set out a bit closer to home, completing the West Highland Way with Kris Hallenga, friend and founder of breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel! Whilst the hike might seem a touch shorter at just 96 miles, it was Kris’ first ever long distance hike and carried with it some pretty lofty ambitions.

Like Gail, Kris found out in her 20s that she had a problem that wasn’t going away. For Gail it was chronic pain, for Kris it was stage 4 cancer. At the time, Kris had no idea that cancer could be found in people so young. She hadn’t heard it talked about or learnt about it in school and as a result wasn’t checking for early symptoms. Hearing that you’ve got cancer is one of those things that no one ever expects to happen to them, and Kris was no different. Looking back on it now the standout thing for Kris is a feeling of frustration, that this had happened to her and that whilst it maybe couldn’t have been avoided, the impact could have been lessened if caught early.

It was channelling that frustration which drove Kris to set up her charity, CoppaFeel! over the next year and today the charity achieves an incredible impact every year, empowering and educating thousands across the UK. Yet, its only in recent years that Kris has come to realise that she perhaps didn’t give herself the space and time to confront her trauma, something which a self-propelled journey through the outdoors offers the space to do.

There was a lot wrapped up in those 96 miles. Most immediately, it was two great friends going for a long walk together. As Kris’ debut multi-day adventure, it was her first taste of the thrill of thru-hiking and a chance to taste the sense of freedom and fill her lungs with the fresh air we’ve all been missing whilst barricaded in doors on and off over the last 2 years. It was also a chance to work through the feelings, emotions, thoughts and sensations we push down in our daily lives. The outdoors gives us the space and time we need to rediscover what you’re capable of and find our limits, pushing past them or learning to accept them and love ourselves for how far we’ve come.  

The way was long and tough, and there’s no getting around the fact that tears were shed (nor should be we hiding that sometimes life is hard) At times putting one foot in front of the other seemed like an insurmountable challenge, however, for every valley, there will be a peak and after 96 miles of packet food, tears of joy and of frustration, breath-taking vistas and  swarms of midges, these two inspiring women found themselves triumphant in Fort William.

Simply by being who they are and choosing to speak out about their experiences rather than hide behind the façade of normality so often found covering invisible illnesses, both Kris and Gail are sending a message that adventures are for all and that everyone, regardless of any adversity or illness is just as valid in the outdoors as anyone else.

Sometimes photography is straightforward, and sometimes your images have to serve a variety of conflicting purposes. On a recent trip to London with Surfers Against Sewage, simple photojournalism wasn’t going to cut it. There to document the handing in of a petition pushing for ocean health, our images needed to document the days events, be striking enough for social media, and give viewers a sense of the emotions of the day in a way that only storytelling can. Read on to find out how we managed it, the key elements to storytelling , and practical tips on using photos to tell a story.

Surfers Against Sewage are an organisation close to our hearts at Tin and Copper. Working to protect the landscape we love here in Cornwall; we’ve worked with them over the last few years, producing photography and videos for their campaigns bringing much needed to change in areas from river pollution to single use plastics in business. That said, it was a no brainer when we got the call to head up to London and photograph the handing in of their momentous Ocean Emergency petition. The plan was to meet outside Westminster Tube station at 09:00, where we would not only be meeting the SAS team and our good friends from Here Now Films, who would be filming the day, but also 20 school children from Surfers Against Sewage plastic free schools. From there we’d move en masse to Downing Street, collecting Olympian Hannah Mills on the way, and knock on governments front door to deliver a list of demands backed by 68’000 people.

The challenge – photojournalism vs storytelling

On the surface of it, it seemed like a straightforward photojournalism job, albeit with the unique trials and triumphs that come with photographing children (read our top tips on that here). Photojournalism is rarely, if ever, considered an artistic pursuit, and in that spirit, we were to focus on honesty over beauty, creating a frank and digestible report of the day’s events. That seemed easy enough, nothing we hadn’t done before. Big open images, capturing detail and action, the kind of all-encompassing snapshots you see in every news report. The actual project turned out to be just a bit more complicated.

We soon learned that the images were going to be used not just to document the day, but as attention grabbing snapshots for social media, on the SAS website, in press releases and on their blog. That changed things a little, no longer dealing with pure documentary photography we were now tasked with communicating the sense of hope and triumph that the event stood for as the final action in a months long campaign. In other words, we weren’t just documenting an event, but telling a story.

Telling a story with photography is a far cry from its documentary cousin. Whereas the old adage, a picture is worth a thousand words, fits perfectly with photojournalism, where the object really is to efficiently impart maximum information with a short set of photos, if not a single image, when telling a story with photos we are looking to guide the viewer through every nuance of the narrative. Here, the feelings and emotions, tensions and triumphs are just as important as what’s actually happening. We want our audience to feel like they’re a part of what’s going on, illustrating every step of the journey so they feel as though they’re experiencing it themselves, and exploring every angle, every feeling along the way.

Tips and tricks

Remember the details – this can be photographs of closeups or scenes away from the main ‘action’ that on their own may not tell you much about what’s happening, but give you a sense of the emotions at play – yes, we were documenting children handing in a petition but showing them both nervously chatting beforehand and proudly displaying their ocean activist badges outside No.10 tells viewers a lot more than a head on press shot ever could.

Establish a scene but show it from every angle – For this shoot the location was obviously important, it’s not every day you get to shoot on Downing Street and the classic, head on press style shot was a must. But that doesn’t mean it tells the whole story – behind the scenes shots or shots just before or after that perfect photo-journalism one give depth to the story – the SAS team laughing and taking a selfie on Downing Street shows your audience the pride and triumph swelling up inside of them as a campaign they’ve worked long and hard on comes to a head and they make a real, demonstratable impact for the good of the environment.

Introduce relationships – be careful about who you include in each shot. Teachers are there with kids but that doesn’t mean they have to be together in every shot – these kids were self-motivated and independent – no responsible adult was going to let them walk through London alone but that doesn’t mean they needed them there. In terms of telling the story, leaving the adults out of some shots shows just how brave and steadfast in their beliefs these young activists are.

How did it go?

On the day, things went great. Whenever kids are involved, things are always a little chaotic and there was the added challenge of shooting around a film crew who just like us, only had one shot as we made our way to Downing Street on a strict schedule. The important thing to keep in the back of ours minds was the mix of images we needed to produce. Waiting to begin walking, the kids were wrapped up in that giddy blend of nerves and excitement that come before any big day. Something we could communicate to audiences down the line in photos of restless feet and giggling faces full of suspense and anticipation.

Once we were on the way, we made sure to photograph for context as well as showing the kids underway, capturing scenes we passed like the crowds watching the changing of the guard, signs for Downing Street, and London’s iconic architecture which would help viewers sink their teeth into the narrative and feel immersed in the story. Outside No.10 we of course got the all important photojournalism shot, edited and released not even an hour after the event took place but we also took time took take some behind the scenes shots, photos which told the story from our perspective too and gave depth and character to the smiling faces holding their petition box in that one photo.

Photographing children might sound like a nightmare to some, but it can be just as fun and exciting as it is challenging. Whatever you shoot, be it lifestyle, food, interiors, or products... the majority of professional photographers will at some point end up working with children. Most recently for me, it came on a press / documentary project with environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage, delivering a very serious petition to No. 10 Downing Street, so believe me when I say the opportunity really can crop up at any moment.

We spend a lot of time as photographers trying to tease perfection out of our subjects, looking for the best angle, the crucial moment, the lighting set up that brings everything to life. For me, at least, children’s photography throws a lot of that out the window and replaces it with something much simpler and joyful; bringing the same wonder and excitement with which kids view the world to an adult audience. Read on for my top tips on achieving just that..

Have a chat and be prepared to get a little silly.

It’s been a little while since I was 3ft tall, and sometimes its easy to forget that the world, whilst new, vibrant and exciting, can be  intimidating to kids. Especially when there’s a big, tall stranger pointing a camera in their face. Start every interaction without the camera, find out a bit about them, what they like to do, what they’ve done that day, they may be small but more often than not they’ve got big personalities. The key here is to get on their wavelength, asking about things they’re really interested in and not falling into the trap of sounding like a teacher or grandparent asking about their day at school. Ask about their favourite animal or their best jokes, and don’t be afraid to join in with any silliness. Children are going to play, they’re going to get distracted and dance around, getting on board with this not only makes you much less intimidating, but helps you connect with who they are, something that will come across in the final images.

Get down on their level.

Another way to seem less scary is to literally get down on their level. An added benefit of this is the unique perspective you end up with. Throughout the photo shoot, you want to avoid looking down on children as much as possible. Instead, shoot looking upwards or at their eye level. This isn’t an angle you see often and it helps communicate that childlike wonder and excitement to your audience, almost as if they’re seeing the world from a kids eyes. You also never know what you might miss because you’ve got your head stuck in the clouds up at adult height.

Don’t pose them.

Good luck if you even try. Even if its studio photography, children rarely want to sit still long enough to pose for a photo. You’ll get much more natural images and capture who they are as (little) people far better letting them do their thing, albeit with a little direction. If there’s a specific shot that you need that they aren’t getting, simply come back to it. They’re also much less likely to get bored and tired that way (something which almost certainly spells game over). The best children’s photography is full of smiles and excitement, and those big, natural ear to ear grins are only going to be unleashed when your subject is comfortable and enjoying themselves.

Use natural light.

Just like strict posing guides, extensive lighting set ups are going to make children tense up. The object here is natural photography and an enjoyable photo shoot for everyone involved. Sometimes a couple of lights can’t be helped, but wherever possible try and limit it to ambient sources or run the risk of looking like you’re taking school headshots – if its not a fond memory for you, don’t expect them to love it either. Taking your shoot out of the studio gives you much more light to work with and gives kids a big, open space they won’t feel penned in by. True, there’ll be more distractions but  that just means more opportunities to capture genuine interactions.

Shoot wide open.

Or at least wider than you usually do. For a lot of us, detail is king. Why else do we spend thousands on cameras with the latest sensors and the sharpest glass... When it comes to photographing children, we’re much more interested in capturing emotion than we are detail. Nothing gives that sense of beauty and magic like a soft, blended background. Portrait pros will tell you that 85mm is the golden length, but personally I like to shoot on a telephoto (Canon’s 70-200mm f2.8 III to be precise) giving myself a bit of range to work with, flexibility when kids run off, and the chance to pick out subjects against gorgeously soft backgrounds.

Most importantly? Enjoy it!

It might be out of your wheelhouse but its good to be pushed outside your comfort zone every now and then. Focussing on feeling is also a refreshing break away from the hunt for perfection, once you’re in the spirit of it, it can be a wholly rewarding experience to photograph without the constraints you might put on yourself in your other work. Above all else, I guarantee that if you can let go, get silly, and find a way to connect, you’ll go from seeing them as little terrors to your new best friends in no time.

Having just seen through the G7 summit, the UK is once more playing host to the play date of international policy makers, with the United Nations Climate Change Conference, known to its friends as COP26,  set to take place in Glasgow later this year. The goal of this big boys club is to ‘accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN framework convention on climate change’  - which when we translate diplomat to plain English means figure out how we can stop irreparably destroying the environment and move forward as climate conscious as possible.

Ask any of the primary school children on the day though and they’d tell you sure enough that the government simply wasn’t doing enough, and the likelihood was that we couldn’t rely on it to do better. And so, rife with stories of letter writing campaigns to BA regarding their plastic consumption, litter picks around their communities, and swaps they’d made to reduce single use plastic, these kids from SAS plastic free schools had come to knock on Boris’ door, declare an #OceanEmergency and hand over a list of demands.

Specifically, they were handing in a petition, signed by almost 70’000 individuals and schools across the country, calling for the UK to put the ocean at the forefront of climate negotiations. The people have spoken, and they want to see ocean rewilding and blue carbon habitat restoration, the implementation of High Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs), and recognition of the importance of marine ecosystems for human well-being by governments world-wide. Lending her support on the day, speaker and environmental activist Hannah Mills dropped by, oh and let’s not forget she’s also an Olympic champion sailor so yeah, she knows a thing a two about the health and well-being benefits a thriving ocean has to offer.

With Hannah, the Surfers Against Sewage team, and their teachers by their side, these kids marched dauntlessly past the towering gates of Downing Street, right up to the door of No.10.  Along the way we got a taste of what it meant for them to be there, their inspirations for fighting for a cleaner, more environmentally conscious world, and how they thought they could make a difference. Covering everything from melting ice caps interfering with the hunting strategies of polar bears to contacting your local MP; it quickly became apparent that these weren’t just a bunch of primary school children out on a class trip for the day, but committed, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic activists ready to create the changes they wanted to see (even if a few of those ideas did involve polar bears and saving their cute babies)

At the days close the whole team had shoved just a list of the biggest threats (and accompanying solutions) to the ocean right under the governments nose. Whether they choose to take it on board during COP26 negotiations remains to be seen but what we saw on the day not only goes to show the growing discontent with environmental policies but stands as a testament to the incredible impacts that SAS’ plastic free schools programme can have.

We’ve got a long way to go in the fight for a healthy, protected ocean, but we can rest a little easier knowing the fight wont end with us. There’s a new generation of activists on their way who are informed, inspired, and ready to finish what we’ve started – right after their breaktime ends...
