Months have now elapsed since the unusual U.S. embassy shooting here in Toronto.

To refresh, in March of this year a vehicle pulled up in front of the United States embassy on University Avenue, two people got out, opened fire on the building, returned to their SUV, and sped off to the south. At the time the cops were calling it a “national security” issue.

On May 19th an update on the incident was reported by CTV news in which an Iraqi national by the name of Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi was implicated. It’s alleged that Al-Saadi was associated with a group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya (HAYI), translated as the “Islamic Movement of the People of the Right Hand” (or something like that).

It’s claimed that HAYI was unknown until March of this year although, ostensibly, a dormant Telegram group existed for it as far back as 2024, maybe earlier. The history here is a bit murky.

Nevertheless, the narrative has since widened, implicating a parent Iranian group by the name of Kata’ib Hezbollah in the recent killing of Toronto Police Services Constable Marc Pinizzotto.

According to reports of the time, a co-conspirator named Nicholas Bennett was shot by TPS during a related takedown and a 19-year-old male going by Zara Jabbi (below) escaped.

“… wanted in connection with the March shooting at the U.S. Consulate … considered armed and dangerous.” — Toronto Police Service

Four other people were in the apartment at Martha Eaton Way near Trethewey and Black Creek at the time of the coordinated raids. Additional details remain scarce, with the exception of the alleged supplier of stolen transport equipment, Sheldon Tracy-Stewart.

It’s recently come to light that the final suspect (Jabbi), has been arrested. To wit, “He is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, discharging a firearm at a place, attacking premises of internationally protected persons, and multiple firearms offences.”

Here’s where it gets weirder: I meticulously analyzed and questioned the official timeline of the shooting which was reported as beginning at around 4:29 a.m. Yet the current mainstream record claims that, “Police allege Jabbi and another suspect drove a stolen white Honda CR-V to the consulate around 5:29 a.m., exited, and fired multiple rounds at the building before fleeing.“

Maybe this is just an AI summarization error; all I know is that there’s still a missing and unexplained hour in the timeline. Could be a Mandela Effect.

I have some history with this subject.

A little over 16 years ago I posted about the start of the St. Market North redevelopment project. If you’re not familiar, the north building sits directly across the street from Toronto’s historic St. Lawrence Market — an adjunct, if you will.

Initially, five teams identified only by colour put forward their proposals for the upgrade. About 2 months later, City Council chose the “Red Team” consisting of Adamson Associates Architects and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.

The following is a panorama I took of the north market at the time. For comparison, below it is the original “Red Team” design from about the same angle:

I stand by my earlier description of the then-existing market as “a stripped-down school gymnasium”. Built in 1968 as a “temporary” measure, it was basically a concrete enclosure into which folding tables, camping chairs, and local farm products (antiques on Sundays), were dragged on a weekly basis.

No matter which team’s design was chosen, the redevelopment was bound to be an aesthetic improvement.

The new north market finally opened about a year ago, in early April 2025. The following image is probably also a rendering (too many suits in the area!) but this is pretty much exactly how the building looks today — same angle as that initial 2010 pano:

A budget for the redevelopment was estimated at $58 million and the building was expected to be finished in 2014. Unofficially.

The official budget was nearly $75 million, revised in 2013 to about $95.5 million, and the final approved cost in 2024 was about $128 million.

An official timeline for the project’s completion may exist but I haven’t yet found it. There was the whole “archeological finds” thing but that accounted for only a couple of years of delays.

In short, based on the available metrics the St. Lawrence Market North project was close to a decade behind the estimated schedule and close to 70% more expensive than the official outlook.

Sounds familiar.

As I work my way down the quickly dwindling roster of the Raisin Gang, it’s understandable that its members should become more elusive and difficult to track down.

And my penultimate target has proven to be an exceptionally slippery one: James Boyd

To the best of my knowledge, he only ever orchestrated various Gang activities from behind the scenes so tracking him by physical characteristics like face or voice wasn’t possible.

Nevertheless, I started with a simple search and hit on a matching profile nearly right away: a James Boyd of Toronto, currently production manager at Brown Bag Films with a bunch of experience in audio production and the music business.

Gotcha!

But … hmm … no mention of Ryerson/Metro University. In fact, this James claims to have studied music at Keele University about a decade earlier.

An expanded search produced more numerous but less likely candidates, everything from realtors to VPs at gold mining outfits. It took me a while to dig through the pile but I’m fairly certain that I’ve found our elusive Mr. Boyd.

As may be expected, he’s presently hiding out as a lawyer with Siskinds, LLP in London (Ontario).

The tip-off was a small mention at the bottom of his profile: “Prior to pursuing a legal career, James owned and operated a corporate video production company in Toronto for five years…“

The “corporate video production company” is ostensibly “Single Space Productions” which lists Ryerson University as a client. Accordingly, James studied at Ryerson from 2004 to 2009, starting out in film and going on to major in “Radio and Television Arts”.

In the summer of 2009 his story goes dark but we can infer that the he and the Gang probably sat around stewing in the hot juices of their own malevolence until mid-August when the first Raisin Gang video was uploaded. I discovered them about ten months later.

Among James’ earliest recorded experiences, from late 2007 to early 2009, is the role of “Equipment Distribution Centre staff” at Ryerson where, “I tested and maintained the department’s audio and video equipment & facilities and authorized & supervised the rental of equipment … also one of the senior staff in charge of supervising the other staff on-duty and overseeing daily operations of the centre.”

I believe that’s how you spell “smoking gun”.

And just like the rest of the Raisin ne’er-do-wells, in 2015 he desperately tried to cover his tracks by spending a few years Doctoring a Law degree at Western University (also in London).

Thus physically removed from repercussions of the Gang’s history, he was able to freely oscillate between studying his filthy trade and working his way up the legal ladder. He now splits his time between spreading his undoubtedly vile doctrine at the university and putting it into practice at the firm.

Raisin Gang/corporate video straight to lawyer; the man is pure villainy. Enough said.

And with that I turn my attention to the last remaining Gang member: Dan Ramos.

You’ve seen it with your own eyes, Dan. My exposés are merciless. The curtain sets. I await your imminent contact.

If you go back a little bit through the history of TCL posts you’ll find that I’m no stranger to edgy software and modern technologies. I also tend to interpret such things through a particular lens.

Yet, despite the inherent incredulity of my purview, I was surprised to discover this obscure tidbit of homegrown PC history: the MCM/70 portable computer by Micro Computer Machines Inc.

Here’s their 1973, totally undercover “Executive” edition:

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a spring-activated blade ready to shoot forth from within a well-placed cooling vent in there somewhere … strictly for personal defense, of course.

Originally, MCM Inc. operated out of a desolate area of what is now Toronto called Willowdale. Founded in 1971, the company had a roughly 10-year production run before shutting down operations. One of the most notable names behind the effort was Professor Mers Kutt. Other participants are less well known.

It’s safe to say that the MCM/70 is considered to be among the first, if not the first, in the field of personal/portable computing. In other words, this is a very early version of the thing you carry around with you whenever you vacate your domicile, bowels, etc.

More extensive histories and galleries of the machine exist online but projects involving subsequent products, such as the results of the Department of National Defence’s war games simulations using the MCM/800, remain unavailable.

May was a busy month. Let’s just have a stiff drink or two and leave it at that, okay?

June is presenting its own unique set of challenges but thankfully it’s also presenting some low-hanging fruit:

In case you can’t or don’t want to watch the video, it can be summarized thusly: a cyclist is recording their trip along a waterfront biking trail when they spot a group of cops tackling another cyclist, ostensibly for running through a stop sign, and seemingly trying to escape the orders of the same officers; basically a traffic stop that ended in an aggressive takedown. At one point up to three cops are piled on top of the guy, apparently in order to restrain him.

Understandably, this has generated some online debate about excessive force but since we can’t see what happened prior to the tackle we should probably wait a bit longer to get the full story. Maybe the guy had a gun? Maybe he just stole some old lady’s purse? It’s not as if I’m a fan of state coersion but at this point I don’t have enough information to pass judgement.

It’s worth noting that the video is not actually taken on “Lakeshore”, it’s a little farther south along Queens Quay at Little Norway Crescent. Were the person recording the video to pedal their conveyance a few seconds longer they would quickly reach Bathurst Street and the southern edge of 545 Lake Shore Boulevard West, a Homes First project that straddles both streets, and an interesting juxtaposition to the events in the video.

Although 545 Lake Shore is billed as a homeless shelter, in reality it’s more of an open-use drug site and repository of often shady, sometimes nefarious characters. Of course there are some genuinely down-and-out folks there but between the ubiquitous meth-heads, leaners, and those who supply them, the truly needy are far outnumbered by those who need not be there.

Right across the street is the Waterfront Neighbourhood Centre which houses various preschool programs and a JK-to-grade-8 public school.

Given this context, does the recorded incident simply represent a determined decision to enforce the law or is it something along the lines of performative theater, perhaps in advance of certain events? Hard to say.

Six months of spooky silence … I bet you thought it was over, didn’t you, Raisin Gang?

Wrong!

I even remember who was next on the list: Mary Kelly

Back when the Gang was in its public phase, Mary styled herself as an audio expert. It seems she liked to surreptitiously record and listen to certain conversations and other “ambient sounds”. Perhaps it’s just a coincidence, but so did the Stasi.

The dots connect just a little too well. After all, blackmail is used primarily by people pulling strings from behind the scenes, and I can’t help but notice Mary’s nearly ubiquitous absence from the Gang’s productions. To the best of my knowledge, she only makes two appearances in their videos.

One is a walk-through role, almost as if some sort of subliminal trigger, in the ultra-violent “Precision Elevator”.

The other is a hallucinogenic, MKUltra-esque nightmare called “Frasierberry Soda”.

While Mary is one of the more elusive background members of the Gang, I was able to find what seems like her abandoned online profile. The face fits. The timeline fits. The city fits. And to add more credence, I note that although the profile is clandestinely sparse, even then it boasts managing people from behind the scenes.

Understandably, details are thin.

The only established claims are that Mary was a literary administrative assistant with GLAM for a couple of years after splitting from the Gang. After that, the timeline has her landing a production coordinator gig at Nelvana for just over a year. Then, on May 2014, she disappears.

Maybe I’ve got the wrong Mary Kelly. Maybe there never was a “Mary Kelly”. Doesn’t matter. If the Raisin Gang are going to start a Frasierberry, they’d better be prepared to finish a Frasierberry. If some innocent people get caught in the crossfire, well, that’s just more sticky liquid on the Gang’s hands as far as I’m concerned.

So here we are. By my count, only Dan Ramos and James Boyd remain. Still willing to roll the dice on your covert operations, fellas?

You know where to reach me.

Perhaps you think that I’m engaging in cynical hyperbole but I assure you that I’m not: City Hall is going to demolish the most iconic section of Yonge Street in downtown Toronto. Sure, they plan to rebuild it again afterwards but it’ll look and feel much different — the old Yonge Street of today will be gone.

The push for this started back in the summer of 2011. At the time it was considered a long shot since the concept was mainly just a pedestrian-friendly facelift put forward by gay, lefty-pinko junior Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam and Pride-avoiding, right wing, penny-pinching, newly-elected businessman Rob Ford (remember him?) who, it may surprise you to learn, wasn’t really a big fan of walking or running, wasn’t onboard. So the idea simmered on the back burner for about a decade.

At some point it was determined that a length of Yonge would need century-old water mains replaced and, since this requires wrecking and rebuilding the street anyhow, the proposal resurfaced, congealing early in 2021 into something called yongeTOmorrow. I don’t know to what extent the Wong-Tam’s plan has morphed over the years but right now City Hall is eyeing the portion between Queen Street and College/Carlton for the first phase of a Yonge makeover.

As of 2024, the most current design by engineering firm Parsons splits up the initial stretch into three themed sections.

Each of these sections are clustered around what the project calls Anchors, defined as “existing landmarks that contribute towards the identity of Yonge Street.”

While the “Green Gateway” is indeed quite green and the “Performance/Retail” portion is also aptly named, I’m hesitant to use the word “Innovation” for its designated section simply because of that area’s proximity to Ryerson/Metro University. Some of their innovations are dubious if you ask me.

Nevertheless, the practical result of the current plan would be the reduction of the street to one lane in each direction, to be shared by both motor vehicles and bikes. The design includes “Designated Short-Term Areas”, presumably short bits where the road flares out to two lanes for drop-offs/pick-ups. Along with this there’s a speed limit reduction to 30 km/h.

The resulting space will be used to widen sidewalks and include strips with greenery and street furniture, sort of like permanent curb lane cafés à la CaféTO. How much of these strips will be for public use and how much will be designated for adjoining businesses (i.e. private, à la CaféTO), remains to be seen.

Tenders for the construction are expected to begin in 2030 and construction itself is expected to take about 5 years — with the proviso that this is dependent on the progress of Doug Ford’s unspoken tribute to his late brother Rob, the Ontario Line.

If the timelines of something like Union Station Revitalization or the new St. Lawrence North Market are anything to go by, it’ll be a miracle if any projected costs haven’t at least doubled by the time shovels are in the ground, or whatever futuristic digging implements will be in use at the time, which will likely be 2040 at the earliest.

That gives us at least 14 years to experience and capture the downtown Yonge Street of future yesteryear.

The design is still undergoing public review and there’s a scheduled public drop-in event next Tuesday at the central YMCA that, “will provide an opportunity to view the project information panels and speak with members of the project team one-on-one.” In other words, if you want to meet some of the people who will eventually be responsible for astronomical cost overruns, extensive delays, and assorted disruptions to the surrounding community, this might be the event for you.

Maybe I’m just trafficking in hyperbolic cynicism. Maybe they’ll have coffee and doughnuts. Whatever the case, a “pt.2” is inevitable.

Unfortunately, further productions by Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol are no longer welcome around here.

Shame because I enjoyed Nirvana The Band/Nirvanna The Band The Show. I mean, it got a bit long in the tooth near the end but the premise was fun: two lifelong buddies try creative ways to get booked to perform at the Rivoli. The execution/production of the show was great, they had good chemistry, and the ubiquitous backdrop of Toronto circa 2007/2017 was gratifying.

Besides, they clearly worked hard on it.

However, having sat through Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie I can now confidently say that the shark has been thoroughly jumped. Aside from the quirky humour, one of the appeals of the original series was the captured reality of urban Toronto. In other words, the earlier episodes didn’t feel like they needed a whole studio production crew.

Unfortunately this feeling has been lost. The budget’s grown, the jokes feel tired and hackneyed, and then there’s the time-traveling RV with a contrived plot involving spilled Orbitz. Even the movie poster’s kinda lame.

If you’re looking to see a recorded slice of Toronto and get in a few chuckles then I can recommend (most of) Matt and Jay’s old series. The movie … not so much.

It’s new been a little over a week that a number of bullets hit the US embassy here in Toronto. Although the exact number of reported shots fired ranges anywhere from two to “multiple”, it’s reported that “roughly 10 shell casings” were found outside the building (so probably closer to “multiple”). Apparently the weapon used was a handgun.

According to a Toronto Police Service news release, two people drove up to the front doors of the embassy on University Avenue at 4:29 in the morning of the 10th in a white Honda CR-V, one or both of them got out, blasted the building (cops state that both individuals were involved in the “discharge of the gun”), jumped back in, and drove off toward Queen West.

A couple of days later, @TPSOperations posted that the vehicle used had been stolen but recovered somewhere in Toronto “within hours” of the shooting.

FIREARM DISCHARGE: (UPDATE)
University Av. & Queen St. W (US Consulate)
-the suspect vehicle, a white Honda CR-V, has been recovered in Toronto
-the vehicle was stolen shortly before the incident and recovered within hours
-no further information can be provided at this time
^vs
— Toronto Police Operations (@TPSOperations) March 12, 2026

This isn’t exactly the norm for Toronto but within this odd event are nestled some even odder details.

First, it’s reported that embassy staff didn’t contact the police until an hour after the shooting. Although there’s no explanation of why they waited so long, the media consensus (as primed by the cops), seems to be that because the embassy is heavily fortified, the people working in the building probably didn’t even notice anything amiss.

What’s odd about this claim is that the building is indeed heavily fortified and surveilled (the image near the top is from one of numerous embassy cameras). Based on the embassy’s amount of obvious and public-facing surveillance equipment, not to mention being chock-full of spies, I find it difficult to believe that not a single person, security or otherwise, noticed anything amiss for an hour.

Second, according to a CTV report the incident was reported to an officer that “was flagged down in the area”. Yeah, someone (presumably) from the embassy literally went outside to look for a cop on the street to report the shooting instead of picking up a phone or walking to the nearest police station (52 Division), which would’ve taken about 5 minutes.

Third, in the same report it was stated that, “witness evidence shows that a white Honda CRV was spotted heading west on Dundas Street before turning onto University Avenue and stopping in front of the U.S. Consulate”. That’s a distance of about 190 meters (623 feet). You can see how far this is by taking a trip down University from Dundas in Google Street View:

With good eyesight it wouldn’t be impossible to spot the vehicle from Dundas but it would require standing in the middle of the southbound lanes, perhaps in the crosswalk, as the lines of sight on both sides of University are obstructed. The other possibility is that the SUV was followed by the “witness” in a vehicle but this begs the question of why anyone would’ve remembered a car pulling over for a few minutes — and nothing else.

For context, the shooting happened at around 4:30 a.m. and it was reported on by the media at around 6:30 a.m. at the earliest. Global News had already included this “witness” information in an article just before 8 a.m. yet a press conference held by the police, in which they asked for witnesses to come forward, didn’t happen until 10:30 a.m.

Going by this timeline, the “witness” saw the white SUV drive west on Dundas, turn south on University, then stop in front of the embassy. For some reason the “witness” remembered this commonplace detail but ostensibly didn’t see or hear any shots fired since the cops didn’t receive any report until an hour after it happened, and then only because embassy staffed ventured out into the street to flag down a passing cop.

Standing in front of the embassy, it would’ve been equally difficult to spot the vehicle turning south from Dundas. And was this “witness” just hanging out for the hour before police showed up? The whole thing strains credulity.

Unfortunately, this event has been designated a “national security” issue which means that we may never know the full story. Still, with all of these intriguing little details I’m eager for a follow-up. Rest assured that if/when there are any updates they’ll be promptly posted here.

We seem to be approaching the 6-month mark since the previous installment so, ladies and gentlemen, without further adieu I bring you a bespoke version of the most elegant:

Toronto Sunday World, 21st of May, 1922

Despite its obvious advances in everything from fashion to medicine, one may perhaps be tempted to dismiss the Toronto of over a hundred years ago as an inconsequential anachronism in the context of the modern metropolis. For example, one may point to the seemingly ubiquitous springtime intestinal troubles experienced by locals, as evidenced by the apparent popularity of certain products that appeared in advertisements of the period.

Pish posh, I say! Can one honestly claim that we don’t have to deal with different types of shit in Toronto every season?

Besides, perhaps their physical ailments were related to the introduction of inferior arsenic and strychnine into various products, or perhaps the complete absence of such healthifying ingredients in fake products (shame on the flim-flammers!), but I’m certainly no doctor so we can just go ahead and file that under “speculation”. Moreover, such an analysis fails to take into consideration the countering health benefits provided by certain yeasty tablets which, along with vitamins A, B, C, and calcium, contained only the finest and most refined naturally occurring strychnine.

There are, it must be said, many traditional concepts that we should like to dispense with but that have held through to the modern era due to their enduring aptness. Is it for me to say that they’re wrong?

Why, even non-scientific, which is to say artistic, endeavours from bygone years have stood the test of time. Should I claim that my tastes in decorative motifs are the sole and correct ones?

It’s precisely for these reasons that one should occasionally glance to the past and say, “Gee whiz, that sure was something.”

I make no promises but as work on the second part continues, you may find some other there stuff too.

This is a bit of an exception from my usual posts but I thought I’d add it here since people seem to have been struggling with this for years and since you can presently get this hardware around Toronto for as low as $10.

I happen to have a Rogers-branded box but I suspect this method would work just as well for any other any other branded CGN3 models. It might even work with other branded Hitron networking devices but that’s a whole lotta conjecture on my part.

Want local router, can’t log in

As mentioned, this simple bypass will only allow you to set up the CGN3 as a standalone router and assumes that you can’t log in to configure it for this purpose (otherwise just log in and configure it!) Usually this is because the device is brand-locked (e.g. to Rogers), and requires a confirmed cable internet connection before allowing you any further.

If you’re planning to use the router for cable internet access then you should go through the regular setup outlined by your ISP. If that doesn’t work then contact them for assistance (that’s what you’re paying for!)

Otherwise, use this method to connect your WiFi and wired devices together so that they can communicate. Typical uses include LAN gaming, connecting to local networked printers and scanners, using local webcams, accessing local network storage devices, local file sharing and media streaming, etc.

Instructions

Perform a full hardware reset on the unit and then turn it on (plug in the power supply).
The manual claims that you only need to press and hold the hardware RESET button (the tiny button on the back that requires a paperclip), for about 10 seconds but I hold it longer just in case.

Use a computer or tablet to connect to the CGN3.
The manual describes both the wired (Ethernet) and wireless (WiFi) methods. You might be able to use a mobile phone for this but I haven’t tried it and it seems like it would be a pain in the ass.

Fire up your favourite browser and go to the following URL:
http://192.168.0.1/selfinstall/index.html#test_success

Open up the Developer Tools panel (CTRL-SHIFT-I or CMD-SHIFT-I in most browsers) and switch to the JavaScript Console tab (often just called “Console”). Then copy and paste the following code into the console, followed by ENTER:

document.querySelector("#test").value = "1";
document.querySelector("#name").value = "";
document.querySelector("#pass").value = "";
initHistory();

Turn the modem off and then on again (unplug it and then plug it back in).

Reconnect back to the modem using your preferred method (see step 2).

In your browser go to:
http://192.168.0.1/

Log in with the username “cusadmin” and same password as network password — blank, unless you specified some other value for the “#pass” part in step 4.

Configure away! (I recommend starting with changing the admin password.)

But why?

Again, it’s a cheap option if you’re looking for a wireless+wired router that supports 802.11b/g/n concurrent dual band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) along with WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK security. It’s got pretty flexible configuration options and it can even act as a Samba (network) storage server — just plug a USB storage device or two in the back.

I can’t say that the CGN3 is the best router I’ve ever used but it works pretty well, most of the time. For the money, I can’t complain.

I’m not really big on end-of-year wrap-ups or retrospectives in general but I think it’s worth reviewing some of the things I’ve been following and projects I’ve worked on this year. By extension, I suspect that 2026 is going to be a busy year.

Ye Olde Yuletide Stats

Although I haven’t matched the zeal of the blog’s first year it’s nice to note that as TCL heads into its 16th year it’s still going strong.

I know that the site’s stats are a minuscule drop in the ocean of modern internet traffic but it’s rewarding to note that TCL has a reach that is both global and for the most part organic, meaning that I spend exactly 0 minutes and $0 on promotion. By this mean I mean that I’m open to select and affordable promotions so reach out if you’re interested (see sidebar).

Core SPI

TCL readers may recall the SPI project. To wit, it’s an effort in which Toronto Police Service’s Calls-For/4-Service data is collected and analyzed over a multi-year period. Basically, any time the Toronto Police are dispatched to a call, whether valid or not, it appears in the C4S data.

Interesting patterns have emerged to my naked human eye and I suspect that subtler patterns may emerge to the digital eye. As an example, in the past I’d noted that the 12 overnight hours during Halloween seem like the busiest time for Toronto Police.

Do other interesting patterns exist within this data? Are there other observables that could be recorded and analyzed in a similar manner? Questions linger, efforts continue.

Artificial Intelligence

Now that we’re more-or-less living in cyberpunk land I thought it best to get in on the action. The early results of my experiments with generative AI were satisfactory but not always what I expected. However, the technology improved pretty quickly and I think I was just as astonished as most people by the human-like coherence of its output. We now have potential access to incredible tools with which to create realistic images, videos, sounds, and music.

I use the word “potential” because all these tools include some sorts of limits, primarily because they’re being hosted on remote servers by remote people living in remote realities. As usual, paywalls have been erected.

In response, I learned to adapt some of their stuff to my local, albeit limited, setup. The results make me wonder if we couldn’t cooperatively rent/borrow out our meager hardware (or rent/borrow out others’), in order to add to the parallelism of modern-day AI inference tasks.

Either way, AI has escaped the government-corporate sphere and is currently available to anyone who wants to avail themselves of its abilities. And now it’s agentic. How long the situation will last is anyone’s guess so, looking forward, I deeply recommend looking into it.

/sectionb

If you’re feeling a bit worn down by walking the “straight and narrow path on the tree-lined route, weakly lit by sparse and sickly yellow lights that barely hold back an encroaching darkness“, consider a slight detour.

The first full-length /sectionb novel is now complete, online, and publicly available. The follow-up is in the works.

Why did I make the first novel freely and fully available online? Simply, as many dope dealers will gladly explain, because “the first one’s free!”

I’m continually in the process of adding promotional material which you’re free to distribute to all your edgy friends, radical underground buddies, and any other easily malleable subjects that you may encounter.

Obviously this is heading somewhere so stay tuned in the new year!

Intel 2026

Speaking of the new year, what would a year-end post be without a little analysis? I’ll leave out the obvious “rise of AI” obviousness and instead posit something large that no one yet seems to be mentioning.

While this is strictly speaking not Toronto-centric, am I the only one smelling the presence of global armed conflict? Ukraine may have been a hopeful NATO proxy for a while but it’s looking more like the masks are coming off (and true intentions are emerging).

For example, in Germany:

Germany will require all men to register for potential military service from 1 January 2026, with compulsory service to be reintroduced if volunteer numbers fall short of targets set to meet NATO commitments.

“Modern military service is coming,” said Jens Spahn, Chairman of the ruling CDU/CSU parliamentary group, in a press statement.

“We will have more commitment to voluntary service, the aim is to establish a binding growth path in law with a six-monthly reporting obligation to the German Bundestag.”

…and France:

French President Emmanuel Macron is widely expected to unveil a new proposal on reintroducing national military service on Thursday. During a visit to the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade – one of France’s most elite military units – in the southeastern town of Varces earlier this week, the Élysée Palace said Macron would make an announcement that would “reaffirm the importance of preparing the nation and its morale to face growing threats”.

…and the UK (also Sweden, Norway and Denmark):

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he believed bringing back compulsory service across the UK would help foster the “national spirit” that emerged during the pandemic.

Labour criticised the plans, expected to cost about £2.5bn, as “desperate” and “unfunded”.

The Conservatives want the first teenagers to take part in a pilot from September 2025, with details to be worked out by a Royal Commission

The armed forces placements would allow young people to learn about cyber security, logistics, procurement, or civil response operations.

…and Poland:

Work is under way to make all men in Poland undergo military training, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.

In a speech to the Polish parliament, Tusk said the government aimed to give full details in the coming months.

Efforts are being made to “prepare large-scale military training for every adult male in Poland,” he told the Sejm.

“We will try to have a model ready by the end of this year so that every adult male in Poland is trained in the event of war, so that this reserve is comparable and adequate to the potential threats.”

…and a few other countries:

In the past two weeks alone, Germany and France announced new schemes to enlist more young recruits into their armies.

Belgium also announced the reintroduction of a form of voluntary military service for all 18 year olds earlier this year, just as the Netherlands did in 2023.

Others, like Lithuania and Sweden, saw Russia’s seizure and illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 as an early warning sign to beef up their armies, and reintroduced conscription soon after.

Although Canada has not (yet) made a similar announcement, a recent interview with Canada’s top brass suggests a similar direction, which is to say bellicose and anti-Russian:

I already have (provided) significant contributions to Ukraine. We can go up to 600 members.

What we want to do is have scalable options that dial up or down depending on the demand. And there are ways to rearrange current forces serving in Europe via the NATO stream.

I don’t believe you need to take any sides in this brewing conflict in order to see the pieces moving into position. In the mix is Russia’s stance on any enemy combatants that they may capture in their encounter with Ukraine:

Any Western troops deployed to Ukraine would either become legitimate targets for Russian forces while hostilities continue but deploying them would serve no purpose in the event of a peace deal, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.

So if any of those “up to 600 [Canadian] members” are captured in the seemingly swelling conflict, would they be considered traditional prisoners of war? Considering that no declaration of war has been issued, and if some reports are to be believed, shit’s about to get messy for everyone. I doubt Toronto will be spared.

About a month ago IEEE Spectrum magazine published an online piece by Matthew Smith entitled “Your Laptop Isn’t Ready for LLMs. That’s about to change“

In the article Matthew laments that, “for the average laptop that’s over a year old, the number of useful AI models you can run locally on your PC is close to zero. This laptop might have a four- to eight-core processor (CPU), no dedicated graphics chip (GPU) or neural-processing unit (NPU), and 16 gigabytes of RAM, leaving it underpowered for LLMs.“

“That’s odd,” I thought to myself. “It sure seems like I’ve been using considerably more than ‘close to zero’ useful models on my setup.”

For comparison, I’m running a dual-core (multi-threaded) system with 128MB integrated Intel UHD graphics, definitely no NPU, and by modern standards a measly 8 gigs of RAM. The machine is about 3 years old and it was already a “budget-friendly” laptop back when I got it. As a gaming machine in 2004 it would’ve been pretty badass. Today, not so much.

Admittedly, most of the models I run locally are not (by modern standards) considered large but they’re pretty much on par for my daily needs. There appear to be a good variety of minimal desktop models to choose from and although they’re not all used for interactive chat, within my personally limited specs the number of choices is still quite large.

While Matthew makes mention of the Small Language Models that I employ, his only criticism is that these models “either scale back these features or omit them entirely“ without actually defining what “these features“ are (unless the ginormous size of LLMs is considered a “feature“?)

I’ll grant that generating responses on my hardware is noticeably slower than when using larger (remote) models but that just means that my (fully local) agentic sidekick needs to wake up a bit earlier in the morning in order to complete its high-priority tasks before my first coffee of the day. After that there are plenty of assignments that it can accomplish in the background while I finish another high-quality, fullscreen mission in “Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy”.

All told, a 3-to-6 billion parameter model is probably the upper limit for my setup but even then I’ve got some great options like Google’s Gemma, Microsoft’s Phi, or Alibaba’s Qwen. All three come in a variety of quantized flavours that include thinking/reasoning and integrated software tool use.

If I want to use a model that’s not specifically trained for out-of-the-box tool use I can provide it with programmatic rules, not unlike how llama.cpp operates. Moreover, I can comfortably use these models concurrently with other, smaller, and more specialized models for tasks like computer vision, speech, etc.

Should I need to tighten my resource belt I can hot-swap down to slimmer language models like Liquid AI’s LFM or IBM’s Granite. Additionally, there are many derived and tweaked models available for deeply “underpowered” machines like mine.

Point being, I think that Mr. Smith got it wrong on this one. Laptops like mine are more than sufficient to run modern (albeit smaller), models. Even geriatric machines and browsers can contribute to the effort — depends on your requirements and your ability to split up the workload.

For example, there are certain tasks like generative image and video creation that my setup can’t reasonably handle but for these cases either me or my agentic buddy can farm the work out to a public interface like Google’s Colab.

There are limits, of course, but fully local agentic natural-language AI, as of late 2025, can definitely help with some of the day’s heavy lifting. In conclusion, Mr. Smith, I must judge your information to be a smidge out of date.

With a little over two months since my last devastating revelation I’d bet that the Raisin Gang thought I’d forgotten about my efforts to expose them to the world. Well, they’re wrong!

Cue the next target: Kye Fox

Living up to his sly title as the “Fox”, Kye has proven to be considerably more elusive than his fellow Gang members. Although he’s occasionally included in the credits of the Gang’s roster of videos, to the best of my knowledge he’s only ever appeared in an “official” Raisin Gang capacity one time:

I know I’ve included this video in a previous post but given the wily nature of this particular individual it’s the best I could muster. At this point I can only speculate but maybe Kye’s hidden-behind-the-scenes strategy has something to do with regret and contrition. This may help to explain why he ended up ostensibly parting ways with the Gang and becoming a certified addiction recovery coach.

Truth be told, I suppose that after witnessing what the Gang was capable of I too may have encountered problems with pain-and-memory-killing drugs. Would I be open to vicariously sharing such a history with the world? Hard to say, but then again I was never a nefarious Gang member.

It’s difficult to estimate exactly how long Kye has donned this phoenix-like persona but according to his LinkedIn profile he’s been “helping people” for a few years. Between the periods of his contemporary “rebirth” and his membership in the Raisin Gang, the only reference I was able to find was an old online ad for a seven-bucks-a-pop “1-2-3 Laughter!” show that doesn’t even mention any of the Gang members by name. Not sure why it popped up in the search results, and maybe the timeline’s a bit wobbly, but all of it spells “evasive” to my mind.

Other than what appears to be Kye’s reading list there’s little else that I was able to find but you may be able to extrapolate more information about Mr. Fox from his linktr.ee profile. Nevertheless, I would caution that what you see may not necessarily be what you get. Call me crazy but I believe that a fox never changes his stripes.

So what’s it to be, Raising Gang? Are you prepared for more public infamy, shaming, and anthropomorphising, or are you ready to come clean?

My patience is wearing as thin as a moulting coat.

So it’s been another 7 months but I swear that the timing’s not intentional. Not on my part anyway.

Once again I find the TCL stats being deluged with much higher numbers than usual. Most of the visitors (howdy!) seem to be legit and tend to exhibit very similar behaviours. A handful, however, are very clearly scraping the site for content, often in coordination with other suspicious “visitors”. The patterns aren’t hard to spot.

Having now laid out a couple of alternative theories regarding this phenomenon, I have arrived at a third: the content is being used to train artificial intelligence models.

I’m not trying to over-inflate TCL’s importance here; I know that training an AI model requires lots of material and TCL would at best only make up a tiny fraction of that. Still, it’s kinda neat that my thoughts and motivations might be integrated somewhere deep within a cybernetic “supermind”.

Yes … very neat … muhuhuhaHAHAHAHA!

*rubs palms gleefully*

Of course this doesn’t preclude the possibility that the Germans or the Americans or the Chinese are involved in this affair, possibly for similar reasons, but it seems to me like the implications are similar.

So if this you, AI, don't be bashful!

Now that we’re about in the middle of the season I’d like to take a moment to reflect on how one would have stayed cool in the heat of a Toronto summer without our modern accoutrements.

A dip in the lake might’ve been an option but I suspect that it would have been about as clean as it is today. You can more fully appreciate the meaning of that comparison if you hang out by the water during low tide on hot, humid days. Yum.

Cool drinks, paper fans, and refreshing mist might’ve been helpful but if we’re being honest there’s nothing that compares to a classy ride through Toronto in a horse-drawn carriage, amirite?

If you’re feeling the heat then let’s get our rides on, bitchez!

If the Gang thought that I’d lost interest in pursuing their unholy organization, they were sorely mistaken. I also recall mentioning that the timing of these exposés wouldn’t be on any sort of regular schedule.

So it is in this context that I introduce: Michael Peddle.

Micheal Peddle, a.k.a. Mike P, appears so far to be the most elusive of the Gang. Apropos, then, that he should also appear to be mostly absent from the original contact with TCL.

Thankfully a more extensive archive exists:

Guy sure had a hard-on for peddling his “religion”, huh? And what about the following attempt to manipulate and warp young minds?

Scrambled eggs indeed.

The last trace of “Mike” was in 2007 when he appeared as a writer and voice actor for the animated short “Coffee Mishap“:

I prefer my coffee mishap-free so I can’t say that I’m eager to partake of this “humorous” outing but if I get more info on “Mike” I’ll be sure to post it here posthaste.

In the meantime, the timer’s still ticking. Are you still paying attention, Raisin Gang?
