The race has been extended to 100 laps, making it the longest NASCAR Cup Series event ever held at the New York road course. Track limit changes at the exits of Turns 1 and 5 have also tightened two key areas, adding extra precision to a circuit that already punishes small mistakes.

For van Gisbergen, the assignment is familiar. The Trackhouse Racing driver has become NASCAR’s modern road course measuring stick, and he reinforced that status by topping practice averages before taking pole position in the No. 97 Chevrolet.

“Only Turn 1, I find different,” van Gisbergen said after qualifying. “You really have to brake a bit earlier and harder to stop the corner, and then you’ve got no margin for error.”

SVG sets the standard again at Watkins Glen

Van Gisbergen enters Sunday as the defending winner and clear favourite, with all six of his Cup Series victories coming on road or street circuits. His speed across short and long runs in practice suggested he will be difficult to beat if his car remains stable over the full distance.

He will not have a clear path, though. Michael McDowell joins him on the front row and has shown strong pace at Watkins Glen throughout the Next Gen era, even if results have not always matched performance.

“We’ve had good speed and not the best finishes,” McDowell said. “For me more than anything, it is just about putting together a good weekend.”

Trackhouse Racing also looks strong beyond its pole sitter. Connor Zilisch, fresh from winning Saturday’s O’Reilly Series race at Watkins Glen for a third straight year, starts fifth in the Cup race. Ross Chastain also qualified inside the top five, giving the team multiple strategic options near the front.

Longer race, tighter limits and strategic trade-offs

The extra 10 laps could have a major impact on strategy. Road courses often force teams into difficult choices over stage points and track position, with crew chiefs deciding whether to stay out for points or pit early to gain an advantage later in the race.

That dilemma could be even sharper this year. Cooler conditions and increased tire fall-off were already a major talking point after Saturday’s sessions, with van Gisbergen comparing the marbles and degradation to Bristol when conditions are cold.

The revised track limits may also change how drivers approach restarts. Tire barriers at the exits of Turns 1 and 5 should reduce the ability to run wide without consequence, but they also make those sections less forgiving when cars are stacked together on fresh restarts.

Chris Buescher, who beat van Gisbergen at Watkins Glen in 2024, said the New Zealander’s arrival has forced the garage to reassess its road course standards.

“SVG is coming into the NASCAR world and has instantly shown to be an exceptional talent,” Buescher said. “That’s been a benchmark for the entire garage.”

A field packed with storylines

Katherine Legge returns to the Cup Series this weekend in the No. 78 Chevrolet, making her first start of the season. The English driver has spoken openly about the significance of the opportunity and the challenge of proving herself in NASCAR’s top division.

“The opportunity to get back in is very cool and it doesn’t escape me how lucky I am,” Legge said. “So I’m hoping to make the most of it.”

Joey Logano also arrives looking for a reset after a difficult recent stretch, while Ryan Blaney enters as a potential contender given his past speed at The Glen and strong position in the championship standings.

For fans watching the live stream, the appeal is clear. Watkins Glen combines speed, braking pressure, strategy and road course precision in a way few NASCAR tracks can match. With van Gisbergen on pole, Zilisch rising quickly, McDowell chasing a breakthrough and several championship contenders lurking, Sunday’s race has all the ingredients for a tactical and unpredictable afternoon.

The Arrow McLaren driver won the 85-lap race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course from fourth on the grid, leading 20 laps and finishing 4.6713 seconds clear of David Malukas. It marked Lundgaard’s second career IndyCar win and his first since Toronto in 2023.

Malukas finished second for Team Penske after leading 27 laps, while Graham Rahal completed the podium for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Josef Newgarden took fourth, with polesitter Alex Palou fifth after leading 23 laps but losing his grip on a race he had won in each of the previous three years.

Further back, Dennis Hauger produced one of the standout recovery drives of the day, climbing from 24th to eighth for Dale Coyne Racing, while Nolan Siegel secured a top-10 finish for Arrow McLaren. Pato O’Ward endured a frustrating afternoon from the front row, slipping from second on the grid to 18th after five pit stops.

The Arrow McLaren driver won the Sonsio Grand Prix on Saturday after a race packed with cautions, strategy swings, pit lane drama and one decisive late move on David Malukas. It was Lundgaard’s second career IndyCar victory and his first since the 2023 Honda Indy Toronto, when he was still racing for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Lundgaard crossed the line 4.6713 seconds clear of Malukas, who delivered a strong second place for Team Penske, while Graham Rahal completed the podium in third. Josef Newgarden finished fourth, with polesitter Alex Palou recovering to fifth after a race that slipped away from him despite controlling the early stages.

“I really didn’t expect this today, but I hoped for it,” Lundgaard said after the race. “This was a long wait for this win.”

Lundgaard takes control after tense Malukas battle

The race turned in the final pit sequence. Malukas was leading, with Lundgaard close behind, when the Arrow McLaren driver stopped first with 20 laps remaining. Malukas responded one lap later and emerged still ahead, but Lundgaard had warmer tyres and immediately attacked.

The Dane forced the issue into Turn 1, then held side by side with Malukas through the backstretch kink and into the high-speed chicane. Malukas fought hard, but eventually backed out at the last moment, avoiding contact and handing Lundgaard the lead he would not lose.

From there, Lundgaard controlled the closing laps, sealing Arrow McLaren’s first victory of the 2026 IndyCar season and moving himself into fourth in the championship, 55 points off the lead.

It was also a major missed opportunity for Palou, who had led every session he contested before the race and started from pole. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver led the first 23 laps, but his race unravelled when his team appeared to misread the caution situation around Alexander Rossi’s stalled car.

Palou and Kyle Kirkwood stayed out while others pitted under a local yellow. When the full-course caution finally came, both had to stop and dropped to the back of the field. Palou fought back to fifth, while Kirkwood later lost more time in a slow Andretti Global stop and finished ninth.

The race began with immediate trouble at Turn 1. Felix Rosenqvist, who started third, locked up and tagged Pato O’Ward, sending both cars spinning. Scott Dixon and Caio Collet were also caught in the incident, while several drivers were forced onto the grass to avoid the wreck.

That was only the start of a messy afternoon. Rossi later stopped on the front straight with a mechanical issue, prompting questions over why race control initially held the caution as local yellow while his car sat stationary. Rosenqvist’s day then ended after another incident when his car launched over a spinning Kyffin Simpson.

There was more trouble for O’Ward, whose recovery from the opening-lap chaos was ruined by pit stop issues after he left his box without all four wheels properly secured. He eventually finished 18th after starting on the front row.

Further back, Dennis Hauger produced one of the drives of the day by climbing from 24th to eighth for Dale Coyne Racing, while Nolan Siegel gave Arrow McLaren a second car inside the top 10.

But the day belonged to Lundgaard. After nearly three years without a victory, he delivered when it mattered, beating Team Penske, ending Palou’s three-year run of wins at the event and giving Arrow McLaren a major result at the start of the Month of May.

Naturally, the next question is: when will Saudi Arabia have one of its own on the F1 grid? But among the 35 million who make up Saudi Arabia’s population is a talent who has the skill and grit to make the wait a short one.

Janna Talal Al-Nujaiman is a young woman in a hurry. Despite her late start, the 14-year-old from Jeddah has impressed those in the European karting scene with her speed and strong racecraft.

But just who is Janna, and how did she go from humble beginnings to rubbing shoulders with top-level go-karters?

A trip to the mall inspires a career change

Born to a Saudi father and a Ukrainian mother, Al-Nujaiman began her sporting career at a young age, but her first love was not four wheels. Initially, Al-Nujaiman took up tennis, training under a coach until the age of nine, when an ordinary visit to a mall in 2021 changed her life forever.

The mall featured a go-kart track near its car park, and after a friend invited her to go karting, Al-Nujaiman had her first taste of motorsport. Despite no prior racing experience and no family background in motorsport, Al-Nujaiman‘s father, Talal, a highly esteemed pilot, noticed something special in his daughter’s abilities behind the wheel.

“The first minute she started driving, compared to the others, okay, which is normal, people, children and adults mixed, I noticed Janna is driving well,” reflected Talal. “And she’s overtaking and speeding, and I was like, wow!

“Immediately, I called her mom. I said, ‘Have you ever brought Janna here before?’ I mean, did she drive before she said, ‘Never?’ I said, “Wow, the girl she’s driving.”

“I noticed that the way she drives is really good.

“So when they finished, I said, ‘Are you happy?’ She said, ‘Yeah, Daddy, I’m okay fine, I love it.’ Then I told the woman, ‘Okay, sit down, don’t leave the car. I want another turn,’ which is like, 10 minutes, you know, every time.

“So when she started doing it again, I did it for a purpose. I want to see the printout, I want to see the result. Cause there is something in my mind. What I’ve seen is not normal.

“So I took the result, and I asked the guy, I said, ‘Can I ask you a question, please?’ ‘For a girl nine years old, never driven a vehicle or a motor, or even PlayStation, is this normal? For a girl, he said, ‘No, it’s not normal’.”

Not long after her first laps, Janna was back on track, getting more time behind the wheel and consistently beating targets set by her father, with local teams keeping an eye on her progress.

However, the war in Ukraine left Janna on the sidelines for two years and stalled her progression before a summer vacation to Nancy, France. There, the Al-Nujaimans spotted a karting track nearby.

The circuit was directed by Herve Mountain, a retired French rally driver, and with his guidance, Janna continued where she left off, impressing circuit owners and teams alike, including WRC champion co-driver Vincent Landais.

Despite going up against rivals with over a decade more experience, Al-Nujaiman was not there to make up the numbers and showcased strong racecraft, allowing her to climb through the field.

Upon returning to Saudi Arabia, Al-Nujaiman competed in regional championships, continuing to gain experience and consistently breaking into the top 20 from the back of the grid.

Al-Nujaiman also showed great determination and poise in the face of adversity. One example came in the French Open Championship in 2024, as despite missing two races due to mechanical failures, she charged from 32nd and last on the grid in the superheat to finish 16th.

Al-Nujaiman’s performances caught the attention of French team Dream Racing, who secured her signature for 2024, during which she once again raced in Europe and the Middle East.

The increase in competition forced Talal to make the decision of his life and quit flying Boeing 777s around the world as a pilot in command. It brought an end to 35 years of experience across all aircraft categories and allowed him to request early retirement, so he could devote all his time to his daughter and be by her side as she navigates the European karting scene.

Al-Nujaiman’s growth as a driver continued at the 2024 IAME World Championship in Zuera, Spain, one of the most prestigious events on the karting calendar. In each of the three heats, she overtook a dozen drivers and achieved a best finish of 15th in the second heat.

Visit from Vettel gives Janna increased recognition

Ahead of the 2025 Saudi GP in Jeddah, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel paid a visit to the country, hosting a Race4Women event to develop grassroots go-karting in Saudi Arabia.

Al-Nujaiman, along with nine other Saudi women, was invited to compete against Vettel in a short race, with Janna setting the early pace in practice.

In the race itself, Al-Nujaiman looked on course to beat Vettel, only for a technical issue late on to drop her to last. Nonetheless, Janna had earned the respect of the four-time world champion, who was quick to console her after losing a likely victory and invited her to the podium.

Can Janna go to the top?

After once again representing Saudi Arabia in the IWF finals of 2025, where she secured solid results including a 13th-place finish in one of the heats, as well as a 19th-place finish in the IAME EuroCup final in France, Al-Nujaiman remained with Dream Racing for 2026.

Naturally, Janna’s next step is moving up to cars, either graduating to Formula 4 or F1 Academy, which races in Jeddah as part of the support bill for the Saudi Arabian GP.

Ahmed Baokbah, a prominent expert on the local Saudi Arabian motorsport scene, believes Al-Nujaiman has what it takes to make it to the top.

“There has been a race among motorsport drivers in Saudi Arabia, to get the first [Saudi] F1 driver on the grid, and for me it would be cool if the first Saudi F1 driver would be a woman,” said Baokbah. “And that is Janna representing Saudi Arabia in F1 Academy.

“A lot of people believe our region is drenched with money, and anyone who can be in the sport is rich. However, that is not the case; we have parents who are doing their best to support their kids in pursuing their dreams and see them come true.

“As of now, Janna can only go as far as karting, but anything further than that, they’ll need a proper support, a proper system that backs her and propels her forward to something like F1 Academy. She has proven she is worthy of that support, and she is the number one candidate in Saudi Arabia for such a spot.”

Al-Nujaiman currently lies second in the KSA Rotax Max Challenge standings and has qualified for the Ladies Cup, a world championship for young women drivers held at Le Mans, France, in October of this year.

The 21-year-old, promoted from Racing Bulls for the 2026 Formula 1 season, had the worst race of his career so far as he was ruthlessly out-performed by Max Verstappen in the United States from May 1-3.

He was beaten in Sprint Qualifying by his four-time champion teammate by nearly a second and had to settle for ninth on the grid, where he failed to make any progress and finished 22 seconds behind the Dutchman over 19 laps in the Sprint Race.

Things did not get much better for him in Grand Prix qualifying either as he came home a second down once again and initially ninth, only to receive a double-whammy on this occasion by being disqualified for a breach of the FIA’s technical rules.

Forced to start from the pit lane, he then crashed out of the Miami GP on Lap 4 as he tried to make progress through the field, clipping the inside wall of the entry to Turn 14 and heading straight into the barriers at Turn 15.

The outcome was somewhat of a mercy for the French-Algerian racer after a miserable weekend in the USA as he struggled to bring his typical competitive pace and consistency to the table, especially next to Verstappen who finished fifth.

But perhaps what was most concerning was the comments from Hadjar after the race as he sparks fears by admitting to confusion as to where his speed vanished to, repeating a trend in history of drivers inexplicably struggling in the second seat at Red Bull.

“Honestly, since this morning, I’ve been struggling to… I don’t really understand whats going on,” Hadjar said, after Sprint Qualifying. “It’s frustrating; I’m a second behind my team-mate.

“I’ve always known why I was slower and why I was sometimes faster than him in the first three races. But a second? We’ll have to find out why. I know I can still drive.

“I’m not going to understand it. It’s also difficult to analyse the developments in this context, that’s for sure. I’m not enjoying the car at all. For me, it’s not a big step forward.

“For Max, he’s certainly half-a-second off pole. It’s the best result of the year for us.”

Have Red Bull’s upgrades cost Hadjar?

The comments and loss of speed come at the weekend where Red Bull have introduced their first major upgrade package of the 2026 F1 season, as the team aims to move back towards Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes.

And on Verstappen’s side of the garage, that was certainly accomplished as he qualified second for the Miami GP, only beaten by the championship-leading W17 of Kimi Antonelli, who also tops the drivers’ standings.

The 28-year-old admitted for the first time in the new campaign, after spending much of his time battling the Alpine and Haas teams in the midfield, he feels as though he has a car with a balance that he can trust.

The eye-catching Red Bull introduction was their own take on Ferrari’s rear-wing concept to effectively bring back the old style of DRS when the wings open as a part of the active aerodynamics, dubbed the macarena wing for its spinning motion.

But along with this, the team also introduced new endplates to the front-wing, adapted the diveplanes, and revised wheel ducts as well as making further changes to the sidepods along with a new floor.

The aim is to help generate more aerodynamic load and ensure that it is stable, thus giving their drivers confidence to attack the F1 circuits. It seems as though Verstappen has gelled with them better.

If this is the case, then Hadjar’s Miami GP and deficit to Verstappen mirrors the trend against his past teammates since Daniel Ricciardo departed the team in 2018, but namely Alex Albon and Sergio Perez.

The duo began their Red Bull careers performing fairly well against the now-71-time Grand Prix winner, with a then-rookie Albon produced a respectable effort in the 2019 F1 season following his mid-season promotion.

Whilst Perez had strong openings in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Adding up the first seven rounds of each season, the Mexican achieved 12 podiums from 21 races as well as three victories – including at the 2022 Monaco GP.

However, as the pair discovered, once the base car shifted more and more to Verstappen’s comfort zone, they began increasingly unable to keep up as the front began more and more sensitive to driver inputs.

Verstappen, being one of the most naturally gifted drivers of all-time, was able to manage the ultra-sensitive front end, which naturally introduces a looser and more unstable rear-end, and the gap would grow with each update.

The result is that Albon and Perez both began to look amateurish in comparison and eventually became crash-prone too, ultimately going on to cost them their seats at the team in 2020 and 2024.

Could Hadjar be about to experience the same fate?

McLaren completed the afternoon with a second and third place with the defending world champion ahead of Piastri, although both ultimately came home behind the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli in the United States.

The result concluded an encouraging weekend for Andrea Stella’s team after Norris secured the Sprint Race victory on Saturday, verifying that their upgrades have closed the gap to the Silver Arrows – at least temporarily.

Mercedes are due to bring their own wave of upgrades at the Canadian GP from May 22-24 but for now, CEO Zak Brown can sit happy having seen his team leave the USA with 48 points to add to their constructors’ championship defence.

But it almost went very wrong on Lap 1 as onboard footage captured how the Miami GP almost ended in disaster for McLaren when Norris went too deep into Turn 1 and narrowly avoided wiping out Piastri, who had made a good start.

Captured from Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari, which started from sixth, the seven-time world champion had a perfect view as Norris almost ran into the side of his colleague, but managed to avoid hitting the Australian.

The British driver then showed smart racing instincts to react to Max Verstappen‘s spin by dodging the Red Bull and settling in behind Kimi Antonelli, after the Mercedes had locked up into Turn 1.

And onboard footage from Piastri’s own McLaren shows that had his teammate ran an extra metre too deep into the first corner, they would have both been left with notable bodywork damage at best – possibly even two sets of broken suspensions.

Fortunately they dodged contact and continued on in the race in a strong position with Charles Leclerc leading Antonelli for Ferrari as Norris began pursuing the cars ahead and Piastri moved into fourth.

The fine margins of Lap 1 proved vital to McLaren’s ultimate result at the Miami GP and highlights how the team have two drivers who can race on the edge of fairness and the limit, a key foundation to team harmony.

That harmony helped keep things in check in the opening stages with Piastri racing Norris with respect by not attempting any bold moves, which allowed the 26-year-old to begin reeling in the Ferrari and Mercedes.

Norris eventually passed Antonelli on Lap 7 just prior to a safety car, before Mercedes then regained the place through the undercut pit strategy as they entered a tense battle until the end of the race, both tasked with perfect driving in order to win.

And as Antonelli didn’t make any errors, he managed to cross the finish line ahead of the McLaren behind by just 3.7 seconds, whilst Piastri overtook Leclerc late into the race to round out the podium positions.

“Yeah, got a great start. Obviously, yeah, Turn 2 was pretty interesting once again,” Piastri told media, including Total-Motorsport.com. “So yeah, I was obviously just trying to pick which way to go there.

“And yeah, I think our starts as a team have always been strong, and I think today was another good one. And then after that, the pace was strong. The first stint before the Safety Car, I made a few mistakes and just wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be.

“But I think the second half of the race felt much more comfortable. I think the pace was just a lot better as well and was able to chase down George and obviously Charles at the end as well. So very happy about that.”

Whilst Norris said: “I think we’re talking small margins, but his pace at the end of the stint on the medium was a lot stronger than me, and it was impressive how good they were at the end of stint one.

“I think we were both pushing flat out for every stint, but he could always then stay a bit closer to me when he was behind me than I could ever kind of get to him when I was behind him. I think one of the things that made it always a little bit tough was where our strengths and weaknesses lie.”

The fourth came in the final laps of Sunday’s Würth 400. Things were going fine for Busch, who was battling for a top ten in what he hoped would be a career revitalisation under new crew chief Andy Street. With two laps to go, he and John Hunter Nemechek collided while fighting for 12th.

They ran down the backstretch side by side, with Busch getting clipped into the outside wall. As they entered Turn 3, Busch drove up into Nemechek and sent him into the wall.

The damage dropped Busch and Nemechek to 20th and 21st, respectively. Over the radio, Nemechek called Busch an “ass” and questioned his driving. Busch insisted he did nothing wrong, writing on X that Nemechek “apparently doesn’t know where the [right side] of his car is and where he is in relation to the outside wall.”

While Busch had been faring well for much of the day, it was obvious he was on edge. Busch long had a reputation for lashing out at others, which seemed to mellow in recent years before his recent struggles—encapsulated by what is now a 104-race winless streak—got him back on the brink. He openly cursed out pole-sitter Carson Hocevar for his driving style on the radio, accusing him of “fucking stupid shit that makes him a fucking asshole.” When his spotter Derek Kneeland urged him to calm down, Busch retorted by calling him a “psych major” and told him to “put a bag of ice on your crotch.”

Texas in particular has been a sore spot for Busch and his meltdowns. At the 2007 spring race, he crashed and immediately left the track while his team worked on making repairs so they could rejoin the race and salvage some points. With Busch nowhere to be found, one of his pit crewmen asked Dale Earnhardt Jr.—who retired earlier in the race with an engine failure—if he’d like to fill in for the rest of the day. Curious about how a rival car worked, Earnhardt acccepted and finished the race. Busch left Hendrick at the end of the season while Earnhardt joined the stable.

In the fall of 2010, the now-Joe Gibbs Racing driver spun. After pitting for new tyres, he received a penalty for speeding so had to return to the pits and wait a lap. While parked in his pit stall, Busch raised both middle fingers to the NASCAR official overseeing the penalty and told them, “Fuck you guys.” NASCAR responded by making him pit a second time for two laps.

Busch protested the penalty by asserting NASCAR was “going against the Constitutional rights of everybody” like free speech. Crew chief Dave Rogers, tired of his antics, begged Busch to “stop, please! Man, we all worked too hard for this, you’re costing us! […] They always have the last word.”

Just a year later, Busch was competing in the Truck Series race when he got squeezed into the wall by Ron Hornaday. Under the ensuing caution, he disregarded his spotter’s pleas to calm down and tailgated Hornaday before hooking him into the wall. Hornaday was third in the Truck championship at the time and would be mathematically eliminated from title contention by the wreck. Busch was suspended for the rest of the weekend, also killing his quest for a Cup title.

Guess that’s why his nickname is “Rowdy”. Quite a stark contrast to Chase Elliott, who doesn’t have any nicknames save for “Chase” (his real name is William), as he coolly held off Denny Hamlin to win for the second time in 2026.

Fords absent from O’Reilly

The last time a NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race didn’t have any Fords, the Soviet Union still existed and Michael Schumacher was about to wrap up his rookie season in Formula 1.

After 12,606 days or 34 years, 6 months, 5 days, that streak came to an end on Saturday. The 38 cars competing in the Andy’s Frozen Custard 340 consisted of 32 Chevrolets and six Toyotas, with not a single Mustang.

It was the first NOAPS race since the 1991 season-ending Winston Classic at Martinsville with zero Ford cars. Like at Texas, no Blue Ovals were present in the 32-car grid or even among the four drivers who failed to qualify. By comparison, the race before that had a quartet of Fords while the 1992 season opener featured six.

Ford’s decline in NASCAR’s second tier has been gradual. Despite winning championships as recently as 2023, the company slowly phased out its investment into the series as there was little reason to focus on it with an already loaded Cup Series driver lineup and a solid foundation in the Truck Series. Many of the top Ford teams soon defected to Chevrolet like Haas Factory Team and RSS Racing.

The Miami International Autodrome produced a race built around tyre management, late race pressure and damage limitation. Antonelli beat Lando Norris by 3.264 seconds after 57 laps, while Oscar Piastri finished third, 27.092 seconds behind the winner. George Russell, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc were separated by just over a second at the flag after a frantic closing phase that changed the complexion of the final points order.

1. Mercedes

Antonelli’s win was the centrepiece of the weekend. The Mercedes driver controlled the race from the front, resisted pressure from Norris, and finished 3.264 seconds clear of the McLaren. It was not a dominant runaway, but it was another example of Mercedes having the fastest overall race package when it mattered.

The key strength was Antonelli’s ability to manage the race without losing control of the lead. Miami was not simply about raw speed. It demanded tyre discipline, clean execution and the ability to handle pressure across a long one stop race. Mercedes ticked those boxes with its lead car.

Russell’s fourth place made the result even more valuable. His race was compromised by front wing damage, yet he still recovered enough performance to beat Verstappen and Leclerc to the line. Russell finished 43.051 seconds behind Antonelli, but the important detail was the position rather than the gap. On a difficult afternoon, he still protected a strong points return.

The one reason Mercedes do not score a perfect 10 is that the team did not secure a one two. Russell’s damage meant the team could not turn its race winning pace into maximum damage against McLaren in the constructors’ fight. Even so, Miami was another statement weekend.

2. McLaren

McLaren were the best overall two car operation in Miami, even if they didn’t win the race.

Norris finished second and was close enough to Antonelli to keep the result alive into the final phase. The gap of 3.264 seconds underlined how competitive McLaren were, particularly in race trim. Norris did not have enough to force the win, but he made Mercedes work for it.

Piastri’s third place gave McLaren a double podium and a major points return. He finished 27.092 seconds behind Antonelli, which shows he was not on the same pace level as the top two, but he still delivered when it counted. His late move past Leclerc was important, both for his own race and for McLaren’s overall result.

McLaren’s strength was consistency. They were quick enough to challenge Mercedes, clean enough to avoid the late drama that hit others, and clinical enough to place both cars on the podium. In a championship context, that matters.

The only thing missing was victory. Norris had pace, but not quite the final edge needed to beat Antonelli. Piastri also had to recover rather than dictate his race. Still, no team other than Mercedes looked as convincing at the front.

3. Williams

Williams are the biggest climbers in the Miami GP team power rankings after turning midfield promise into a double points finish.

Carlos Sainz finished ninth, 82.072 seconds behind the winner, while Alexander Albon completed the points in 10th, 90.972 seconds back. Those gaps show Williams were not close to the front runners, but that was not the fight they needed to win. Their race was about beating the midfield, and they did that.

Sainz was the stronger of the two Williams drivers. He kept the car inside the points, managed the race cleanly and gave the team a result that felt fully earned. Albon then made sure it became a double score, which can be vital in a tight constructors’ battle.

What made Williams’ Miami performance stand out was execution. Several rival teams had one quick car, one messy race, or no finishing position to show for their potential. Williams converted both cars into points. That gives them the edge over Alpine, despite Colapinto finishing ahead of both Williams drivers.

It was not spectacular in the way Antonelli’s win or McLaren’s double podium was spectacular, but it was one of the most efficient team performances of the race.

4. Alpine

Alpine’s Miami GP was lifted by one of the strongest individual midfield performances of the race.

Colapinto finished eighth, 61.871 seconds behind Antonelli, and was the highest placed driver outside Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull Racing and Ferrari. In a race where the midfield was stretched out, that was a major result. It gave Alpine a clear reward from a weekend that could easily have slipped away.

Colapinto’s drive was especially valuable because he finished ahead of both Williams cars, both Haas cars, both Audi cars, both Racing Bulls drivers and both Aston Martin drivers. That is exactly the kind of result Alpine need if they are going to move up the constructors’ order.

The issue was the second car. Pierre Gasly started inside the top 10 but could not convert that into points. That stops Alpine from ranking above Williams, because one strong result was not as complete as Williams scoring with both drivers.

Still, Alpine had genuine pace in Miami and Colapinto gave them one of their best returns of the season so far. As a team performance, it was good. As a one car execution, it was excellent.

5. Ferrari

Ferrari scored with both cars, but Miami still felt like a missed opportunity and a painful result.

Leclerc finished sixth, 44.245 seconds behind Antonelli, while Lewis Hamilton came home seventh, 53.753 seconds back. On paper, that is a solid haul. In reality, Ferrari had the potential to leave with much more.

Leclerc started third and had the pace to be part of the lead fight early in the weekend, but his race unravelled late. He was passed by Piastri, Russell and Verstappen in the closing stages, turning what could have been a podium chance into sixth place. The fact he finished just 0.296 seconds behind Verstappen shows how tight that battle was, but also how costly the final phase became.

Hamilton’s seventh place added points, but he never looked like a serious podium threat. Ferrari had both cars in the top seven, but they were beaten by both Mercedes drivers, both McLaren drivers and Verstappen. That is not enough for a team aiming to fight at the very front.

The damage bill also mattered. Miami became a bruising race for Ferrari physically and competitively. They were not slow, but they were not clean, and their race pace did not match their starting promise.

6. Red Bull

Red Bull’s Miami GP was one of the hardest performances to judge because Verstappen rescued fifth, but the team still underachieved.

Verstappen started on the front row and finished fifth, 43.949 seconds behind Antonelli. That alone tells the story. Red Bull had qualifying speed, but the race pace and tyre life were not strong enough to keep Verstappen in podium contention.

His strategy initially looked like it might work, especially as others dealt with damage and tyre concerns, but the final stint exposed the car’s limitations. Verstappen lost ground late and became vulnerable to the cars around him. He still beat Leclerc, but he was passed by Piastri and came under serious pressure from Russell.

The second car result hurt Red Bull’s ranking. Isack Hadjar started inside the top 10 but finished outside the points, leaving Verstappen to carry the team’s entire score. In a race where Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari and Williams all scored with both cars, that was costly.

Red Bull were not disastrous, but they were well below the standard expected from a front row start.

7. Haas

Haas were close to the points, but Miami was ultimately a race of frustration.

Bearman finished 11th, one lap down, which left him as the first driver outside the points. That is never an easy result to accept, especially when Williams and Alpine both scored. Haas were near the fight, but not quite in it.

Esteban Ocon also finished outside the top 10, meaning Haas left Miami with nothing despite having enough pace to stay in touch with the lower end of the points battle. In a midfield this tight, those missed chances matter.

The positive is that Bearman was not far away from a top 10 finish. Haas did not look completely lost, and there was enough race pace to suggest points were possible with a slightly cleaner weekend or a more favourable race pattern.

But power rankings are about results as much as potential. Haas had a chance to score and did not take it.

8. Audi

Audi had a clean but quiet Miami GP.

Bortoleto finished 12th, one lap down, just behind Bearman. That was respectable, especially in a race where staying out of trouble still mattered, but Audi lacked the pace to properly attack the points positions.

Nico Hulkenberg also finished outside the top 10, which meant Audi never turned its afternoon into a genuine scoring threat. The team was competitive enough to remain in the lower midfield conversation, but not fast enough to force its way into the top 10.

The biggest issue for Audi was that its race lacked a defining strength. Williams had two cars in the points. Alpine had Colapinto in eighth. Haas had Bearman knocking on the door. Audi were present, but not prominent.

This was not a disaster, but it was not a breakthrough either.

9. Racing Bulls

Racing Bulls had a disappointing race after entering Miami with hopes of competing in the midfield points fight.

Lindblad finished 14th, one lap down, while Liam Lawson had an even more difficult afternoon. The team could not match Williams, Alpine or Haas over the race distance, and that left them with little to show for the weekend.

The frustration is that there had been signs of potential earlier in the event. But once the race settled, Racing Bulls did not have the pace, tyre performance or track position to make an impact.

Lindblad at least brought the car home in a position ahead of some rivals, but the team never looked close to turning Miami into a points finish.

10. Aston Martin

Aston Martin remain near the bottom of the Miami GP team power rankings after another race without points.

Alonso finished 15th, one lap down, and Lance Stroll endured a very difficult afternoon. The team simply did not have the pace to challenge the top 10, and there was little evidence of a route back into the midfield fight during the race.

Alonso’s experience could only do so much. In traffic and over long stints, the Aston Martin package looked limited. Stroll’s struggles made the overall team picture even worse.

This was the kind of race that highlights a team lacking momentum. Aston Martin were not just beaten by the established front runners. They were also behind Williams, Alpine, Haas, Audi and Racing Bulls.

11. Cadillac

Cadillac sit last in the Miami GP team power rankings after another race spent outside the points battle.

Sergio Perez finished 16th, one lap down, while Valtteri Bottas had a very tough afternoon and was well away from the competitive midfield. For a new team, there will always be weekends built more around learning than results, but Miami showed the scale of the gap Cadillac still need to close.

Perez’s experience remains important, especially for race feedback and development direction. But even with that, Cadillac did not have the performance needed to challenge the cars ahead.

The main target for Cadillac remains progress rather than points every weekend. Miami gave them more data, but not much competitive reward.

Mercedes were the clear winners because they took the victory and extended their status as the strongest team package at the front. Antonelli’s form is now becoming one of the defining stories of the season, and Russell’s fourth place ensured the team still scored heavily despite damage.

McLaren also leave Miami with huge positives. A double podium is a major result, and Norris finishing within 3.264 seconds of the win proves the gap to Mercedes is small enough to keep the title fight alive.

Biggest losers from the Miami GP team rankings

Ferrari and Red Bull were the two biggest underachievers relative to expectation.

Ferrari started with genuine promise but ended with Leclerc sixth and Hamilton seventh. That is not a terrible result in isolation, but the late race slide and damage made it feel far worse.

Red Bull had Verstappen on the front row and finished fifth. Hadjar’s failure to score also exposed the team’s reliance on Verstappen to salvage results when the car is not at its best.

Hadjar has shown promise already in 2026, but Miami was a reminder of how unforgiving life beside Verstappen can be when Red Bull finds more performance.
