The FIA announces changes to the Formula 1 regulations ahead of Miami Grand Prix, following consultations with the power unit manufacturers and teams in the wake of the controversy of the Japanese GP.

The bold new regulations, which introduced a controversial 50:50 split between the internal combustion engine and the electrical MGU-K battery, have left the likes of Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen far from impressed.

Verstappen, in particular, voiced particular frustration, likening the cars to “Formula E on steroids” and comparing the rules to Mario Kart and claimed he could even retire from the sport on the basis of what he views as poor racing quality.

Super Clipping, where battery depletion before braking zones forces sudden speed drops despite full throttle, exposing drivers defensively and creating unpredictable closing speeds between cars still deploying full electrical output.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" v="832752a5fa8dfe8a99e22550ffbf3ca8" image-id="esmeT23vAsMZ" theme="iy-theme" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 1.4998141954663693; max-width: 4036px;"></smartframe-embed>

Complications are intensified by intricate software managing energy deployment, often overriding driver input, as seen with Charles Leclerc and Hamilton, whose performances were impacted upon deviating from programmed energy strategies at Suzuka.

Race starts have also degraded due to removal of the MGU-H, previously vital for turbo efficiency, leading to slower launches and inconsistent acceleration phases, an issue notably affecting teams such as Red Bull.

Tensions escalated during a Lap 22 incident involving Oliver Bearman and Franco Colapinto, where abrupt energy mode changes caused a dangerous speed differential into Spoon Curve.

Bearman was forced off track, losing control and crashing heavily with a 50G impact, echoing severity seen in past incidents, though he escaped major injury, while the Safety Car reshaped race strategies and competitive order.

Following the crash, drivers including Carlos Sainz urged immediate reform, prompting the FIA to fast-track evaluation of 2026 regulations, focusing on mitigating unsafe power delivery inconsistencies.

And the FIA now announces several planned changes to the Formula 1 regulations ahead of May’s Miami GP, where the sport will return following a months’ break due to the cancellation of the Bahrain GP and Saudi Arabian GP.

What are the changes the FIA proposes to the Formula 1 regulations?

The FIA has approved a focused package of refinements to the 2026 F1 regulations after extensive dialogue with teams, manufacturers and commercial stakeholders.

Guided by early-season evidence and driver input, the governing body has concentrated on improving energy deployment, reinforcing safety measures, and delivering more consistent behaviour across sessions, with most updates scheduled to debut from May 3.

To reduce excessive harvesting and eliminate mid-lap lifting, the permitted recharge limit falls to 7MJ, while peak deployment rises to 350kW, cutting recharge phases and easing workload, with select circuits allowed tailored energy limits.

During races, additional boost is capped at +150kW to avoid erratic performance gaps, while MGU-K output remains high in acceleration zones before dropping elsewhere, a balance aimed at reducing dangerous speed deltas without harming overtaking potential.

A new automated low-power detection system will trigger deployment if launches are abnormally slow, ensuring baseline acceleration, while warning lights alert following drivers, and formation lap energy resets correct previous inconsistencies.

In wet conditions, ERS output is reduced to manage torque delivery and stability, complemented by adjustments to tyre blanket parameters and rear lighting systems, all designed to enhance control and visibility in low-grip scenarios.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" v="832752a5fa8dfe8a99e22550ffbf3ca8" image-id="esmez3dGGrF4" theme="iy-theme" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 1.5; max-width: 6000px;"></smartframe-embed>

What happens next with FIA changes to Formula 1 regulations?

These final proposals will now be put before a FIA WMSC e-vote, in which they will either be ratified or rejected. If they are approved, then the plan is to put them in place before the Miami GP, which runs from May 1-3.

Free Practice 1 will take place on Friday, May 1 and will be shortly followed by Sprint Qualifying on the same date at 12:30 ET (local time). The Sprint Race and Grand Prix Qualifying will take place on Saturday, May 2 from 12:00 ET and 16:00 ET respectively.

And finally, the Miami Grand Prix itself will take place at 16:00 ET on Sunday, May 3.

George Russell has been accused of being too soft by ex-F1 driver Christijan Albers, who feels the Brit could be bolder when it comes to his wheel-to-wheel battles against the likes of Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris.

Despite winning the Australian Grand Prix, the 28-year-old has lost control of the Formula 1 championship to his Mercedes teammate Antonelli, who has rushed into a nine-point lead at the summit of the standings.

The change of guard came after a challenging Japanese GP at the Suzuka International Racing Course in which a poor start had dropped him behind Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari and Oscar Piastri’s McLaren, tasking the Silver Arrows star with a fight-back challenge.

He did swiftly pick off Leclerc to move into second place with the Ferrari power unit struggling to horsepower against the W17 on Sunday, March 29, but he then found himself stuck behind Australia’s Piastri.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" v="832752a5fa8dfe8a99e22550ffbf3ca8" image-id="WmOBqbMiwStF" theme="iy-theme" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 1.4992492492492493; max-width: 3994px;"></smartframe-embed>

With McLaren also sharing the Mercedes engine, there was not an obvious advantage in terms of deployment recharge and potential for Russell to use against the MCL40 and he found himself stuck as a result.

Piastri continued to control the early stint until he opted to pit early to prevent against the undercut whilst Russell began coming under pressure from Antonelli, who showed exceptional pace upon moving into third place.

Mercedes then him to avoid a headache with Antonelli’s pace, only for Russell to lose out due to Oliver Bearman’s dramatic crash at the Spoon Curve, bringing out the safety car and allowing the Italian and Piastri to get back ahead.

At the restart, he then lost a further position to Lewis Hamilton in the other Ferrari before later reclaiming the spot, only to then be passed by Leclerc on Lap 37 – although it was due to a battery issue.

Reliving the moment Kimi Antonelli became the youngest championship leader ever! 🏆 #F1 #JapaneseGP pic.twitter.com/SBwVBU2EYp
— Formula 1 (@F1) March 30, 2026

Regardless, the moment relegated him to fourth and he could not recover to the podium positions thus confirming the loss of the championship lead as Antonelli went on to win comfortably from Piastri.

As a result of the difficult Sunday in Far East Asia, Russell finds himself being accused of being too much of a “softie” by Albers, as the ex-F1 driver claims he didn’t take advantage of the soft racing code of conduct allowed by the FIA.

“Look, for example, at how they overtake him again at the second corner,” Albers said to the Telesport podcast. “You’ve already seen it with Piastri.

“Just open the steering wheel a little and Piastri becomes a professional lawnmower. He can’t go anywhere. It’s on the outside.

“They don’t sanction you. You get nothing. He’s a softie. That also happened in China. It is already the second time.

“I have the feeling that he thinks, ‘Well, I’ll catch up with him later, I’m not going to do anything because I’m not going to take any risks here.'”

<smartframe-embed customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" v="832752a5fa8dfe8a99e22550ffbf3ca8" image-id="WmOBqbuGzYjI" theme="iy-theme" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 1.4951456310679612; max-width: 2464px;"></smartframe-embed>

David Coulthard calls for George Russell to stop being nice

The criticism is particularly poignant with Albers having finished runner-up in the 2003 DTM championship with Mercedes, before joining F1 where he raced from 2005-2007 with the Minardi, Midland and Spyker teams.

After leaving F1, Albers returned to touring cars and endurance racing before transitioning into management and even served as team principal of the Caterham F1 Team in 2014 during a difficult period for the team.

And Albers isn’t the only ex-driver with strong words for Russell as David Coulthard, winner of 13 Grands Prix from 1994-2008, also told the Brit that he has to begin treating his situation at Mercedes more akin to a war zone.

“If I were George Russell, this is now a war zone – no more Mr Nice Guy,” Coulthard told F1 Nation. “We said it after Kimi got his first victory. There was a really good interview that I saw online with Toto and George, where they were sort of debriefing in real time.

“I thought it was great that Mercedes shared that on their socials. It gives us an insight to the fact that Toto is there, in one moment, sort of trying to pick up George.

“And then on the other side going ‘You did it, I believed in you.'”

Formula 1 is often viewed as the pinnacle of speed and engineering, but behind every race is a culture built on precision, teamwork and relentless performance improvement. The same principles that determine success on the track, from rapid decision-making to marginal gains and collective accountability, are increasingly shaping how modern organisations think about leadership and high performance.

Few speakers bridge that gap between motorsport and business as effectively as Nick Butcher, a leadership strategist and Formula One (F1) expert who founded Ignition Human Performance to help organisations apply elite motorsport principles to business environments. Over the course of his career, he has worked across automotive, HR and organisational development, translating the fast-paced, results-driven mindset of Formula 1 teams into practical strategies for companies seeking stronger leadership and team performance.

Through his work with businesses and initiatives such as leadership programmes connected to Sir Jackie Stewart’s charity Race Against Dementia, Butcher has developed a reputation for showing how the “F1 attitude” can sharpen focus, accelerate decision-making and strengthen team culture.

In this exclusive interview with SpeakOut Speakers Agency for Total-Motorsport.com, Nick Butcher shares how Formula 1’s high-performance culture can shape better leadership, why teamwork under pressure matters more than ever, and what businesses can learn from the mindset that keeps racing teams competitive at the highest level.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" v="832752a5fa8dfe8a99e22550ffbf3ca8" image-id="esmeEcj4aX2A" theme="iy-theme" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 1.5; max-width: 6000px;"></smartframe-embed>

Q: What defines an F1 mindset, and how can that approach translate into stronger business performance?

Nick Butcher: “F1 is a high-paced environment which is constantly reviewing both success and failure. Ultimately, if an F1 team isn’t ready by key deadlines, so getting the car to the race, onto the transporter, it’s not going racing. And in business that’s something that sometimes we have a luxury of more time because we don’t have those deadlines.

“But actually that can mean that things can drag on, projects can drag on, deadlines can be hit, oh it doesn’t matter. So really when we talk about F1, or F1 attitude, it’s about having that deep look into something, constantly reviewing something, but also doing it with a fast pace in order to achieve success.”

Q: What does Formula 1 reveal about teamwork and trust when performance is under pressure?

Nick Butcher: “I think the best example of high-pressure teamwork in Formula 1 is the pit stop. It’s the best and it’s the most visual. A driver can’t go drive the race and then come to the pit stop and go and change all their tires on their own. They’ve got to trust the team.

“Ultimately, success and failure is dependent on what now with a pit stop is two seconds. And it’s interesting how overtime that’s evolved as well. We were looking at probably 10, 15 years ago, pit stops of, a good pit stop was sort of 8 to 10 seconds.

“So, it’s all those little marginal gains and all those little bits. But ultimately, the pit stop just shows that you are a team and for that moment the driver is completely reliant on the team and whether they do a good job or a bad job affects the overall outcome of the race.”

Q: When you speak publicly, what do you want audiences to learn from Formula 1 leadership and team culture?

Nick Butcher: “I hope people take an understanding that actually there’s so many lessons when it comes to leadership, teamwork, high-performance mindset in the public domain. Whether that is watching your favourite sport, whether that’s following a particular business that you like, there’s so much to learn and it doesn’t have to come all from a book.

“Really when we look and talk around Formula 1, I hope that people will watch the TV on the Sunday and think when they see people like leaders like Toto Wolf or Christian Herer and they might be coming out defending their team, that they actually understand why they’re doing it and think, well actually I see that as a particular leadership style or a particular way that they are communicating with the media and that will obviously get back to the team.

“So I think it’s just taking those sorts of lessons and realising that actually there are lessons everywhere, and what I talk around is just bringing those lessons to your attention to almost develop your own leadership style.”

Kansas Speedway is one of Toyota’s top NASCAR Cup Series tracks, and the AdventHealth 400 seemed to trend in that direction as Denny Hamlin dominated with Tyler Reddick right behind. However, there was a very real chance their effort would’ve been for nothing after a near-catastrophic ending and agonising overtime. Fortunately, Reddick came in clutch at the last moment.

Hamlin led the most laps on Sunday with 131 of 274. Reddick followed him before making a pass for the lead with ten laps remaining. Despite hitting the wall, Reddick kept going unil he suddenly ran out of fuel. Just when it looked like his chances were gone, Cody Ware spun to bring out the caution and allow him to refuel.

“Seemed like a fuel pump issue,” Reddick surmised. “Thankfully, I was able to catch it. Instinctually as a driver, when that happens, you’re out of fuel typically. I was trying to figure out if it was a fuel thing, just all that going on, me going down the back, talk on the radio, hear what Billy [Scott, crew chief] said, everything all at once.

“I lost focus unfortunately and drove right into the fence. Oddly enough, we drove to Denny really well, got clear of him. It was the longest green-flag run of the day. We were getting lap cars better than we were used to. I made bad choices to set myself up to get by Austin Dillon. One time looked like he was going to fade low, give me the top.

“He took the top, lost some momentum there. All on my own, drove into the fence. Unfortunately, that was one of those days where I gave it away. We got very fortunate that the caution came.”

Kyle Larson, who led the second most laps, hoped to spoil the Toyota party and win for a struggling-but-trending-upwards Chevrolet. He took the lead as overtime began and held it through the first lap. Further back after refuelling, Reddick made up all of his lost ground and caught Larson as they went through Turn 1.

Reddick stormed off to his fifth win in just nine races, a feat las achieved by Dale Earnhardt in 1987.

“That stat is crazy. 1987 was the last time that happened? I mean, that was generations ago,” Reddick remarked.

Hamlin fell to fourth, but he still had plenty to be happy with as Reddick’s boss. The rest of 23XI Racing had a strong day too with Bubba Wallace in fifth, Riley Herbst in 14th, and Corey Heim in 15th.

Herbst, whose spot on the team has long been maligned due to his poor rookie season in 2025 compared to his team-mates’ performances, remains a midpack driver but has been improving as 2026 progressed. The 14th is his best run on an intermediate track so far. Heim enjoyed his third top-20 Cup Series finish as he remains a part-time driver in 23XI’s driver academy.

Trackhouse continues to struggle

It feels like ages ago that Trackhouse Racing was knocking on the door as a potential second- or even first-tier Chevrolet team. Shane van Gisbergen remains the main threat on road courses, but with just one of those so far in 2026, the team as a whole seems to have taken a major step back.

Perhaps it says a lot that van Gisbergen is the team’s best driver in 2026 despite his modest numbers on ovals. Even then, he sits 18th in points and outside the Chase after a disastrous Sunday where he finished second to last after struggling with handling problems and a voltage issue.

Trackhouse had no luck the entire weekend. Van Gisbergen qualified the best of the trio in 17th to Ross Chastain and Connor Zilisch’s abysmal 31st and 37th. Chastain and Zilisch struggled mightily as well on Sunday, the former never finding his pace as he finished a paltry 26th whereas the latter was 29th.

Chastain, only four years removed from making the Championship Round, has only one finish better than 16th (a third at Atlanta, a superspeedway that’s basically a lottery). Zilisch’s best run is a mere 14th at Circuit of the Americas, a road course, while his 18th at Darlington is his only other top 20.

To add insult to injury, Daniel Suárez—who lost his seat at Trackhouse to make room for Zilisch—moved up to 16th and now holds the final Chase spot. Suárez has been open about his Trackhouse departure coming on less-than-amicable terms, and his exit coincided with co-owner Pitbull selling his stake in the team.

One of the likely reasons for the team’s struggles is tied to Chevrolet as many of the manufacturer’s customers are still struggling to figure out the aerodynamics of the genericised Camaro body introduced for this season. After all, Chase Elliott’s win at Martinsville is still the only victory for the Bowtie in 2026.

Further compounding matters is the decline in performance by Trackhouse’s engine supplier Earnhardt Childress Racing. Trackhouse and ECR owner Richard Childress Racing, nominally the second-tier Chevrolet teams behind Hendrick Motorsports, have been atrocious on track with underpowered engines compared to those built by Hendrick. Spire Motorsports, whom Suárez joined after leaving Trackhouse, uses Hendrick motors and has two drivers in the Chase picture (Carson Hocevar sits 12th).

While there is still plenty of time until the Chase and Talladega next Sunday offers an equalising opportunity, Trackhouse might be running out of time to do some soul searching.

Alex Palou strengthened his early championship charge with victory in the 2026 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, converting another polished afternoon into his third win from the opening five races of the 2026 IndyCar season.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver completed the 90 lap race in 1:49:09.5058 and finished 3.9663 seconds clear of Felix Rosenqvist, who delivered an impressive second place for Meyer Shank Racing after starting from pole. Scott Dixon made it two Chip Ganassi Racing cars in the top three by taking third, just 1.4800 seconds behind Rosenqvist.

It was another major result for Palou, who continues to set the pace in the title fight with a blend of consistency and race craft that has become familiar in recent seasons. Long Beach had previously been one of the bigger events missing from his list of victories, but that changed with a measured drive that gave Honda a clean sweep of the podium places.

Behind the leading trio, Kyle Kirkwood came home fourth for Andretti Global, while Pato O’Ward finished fifth for Arrow McLaren. Scott McLaughlin was the highest placed Team Penske driver in sixth, with team mate David Malukas just behind in seventh.

The race also produced a strong recovery from Alexander Rossi, who finished ninth for Ed Carpenter Racing, while Kyffin Simpson secured 10th to add another top 10 for Chip Ganassi Racing. Further down the order, Marcus Ericsson was the only retirement classified in the results after completing 38 laps for Andretti Global.

For Palou, though, the headline was simple. Another win, another points boost, and another sign that he remains the driver everyone else is chasing in 2026.

The wait for Alex Palou to win at Long Beach is over, and the way he did it said plenty about why he remains the benchmark in IndyCar. On a day when Felix Rosenqvist controlled the early stages of the 2026 Grand Prix of Long Beach, Palou and Chip Ganassi Racing stayed close enough to strike when the race turned, then executed perfectly when the biggest moment arrived.

By the finish, the Spaniard had his first career Long Beach victory, his third win of the 2026 IndyCar season, and another important step toward what would be a fifth series title.

That outcome was not obvious at the start. Rosenqvist had earned pole and converted it cleanly, leading from the green flag while Palou quickly moved past Pato O’Ward to settle into second.

The first phase of the race belonged to the Meyer Shank Racing driver, who built a useful gap and even held station through the opening pit sequence as the leaders cycled onto their second stint. For long stretches, Long Beach looked set to deliver one of Rosenqvist’s most satisfying wins in years.

Instead, the decisive moment came much later, and it came in the pits. A caution on Lap 57 for debris wiped out Rosenqvist’s advantage and brought the field in together. When the leaders stopped on Lap 59, Chip Ganassi Racing produced the cleaner service.

Palou’s crew completed the stop in 7.3 seconds, beating the Rosenqvist crew’s 8.4 second effort and flipping the race lead in an instant. From there, the complexion of the afternoon changed completely. Palou nailed the restart, pulled clear, and never looked vulnerable again.

“It’s huge,” Palou said. “Super proud of everybody’s job but especially this crew. Incredible to finally win here at Long Beach.”

That captured the mood because this was not just another routine win. Long Beach is one of the most prestigious stops on the calendar, a street circuit that carries real weight in American open wheel racing.

For Palou, who had been consistently strong there without quite getting over the line, this was a missing piece. It also pushed him 17 points clear of Kyle Kirkwood in the championship standings after five rounds.

Felix Rosenqvistleft to rue the final stop

If Palou had every reason to celebrate, Rosenqvist had every reason to feel the sting. He led a race high 51 laps, looked composed at the front, and did little wrong in the opening two thirds of the event. But Long Beach often rewards the smallest margins, and this time the final stop was enough to decide it.

“A little bit of a bittersweet race,” Rosenqvist said. “I lost a little bit on the stop. Alex is obviously going to be 10 out of 10 almost every stop, so I don’t think it was necessarily that our one was slow, but they probably had a great one, as well. That’s how it goes.

“At the end of the day, we’ve got to celebrate this one. P2, plus the points and podium, that’s where I want to be.”

It was a fair assessment. Rosenqvist did enough to show he and Meyer Shank Racing are capable of running at the front, and second place still marked his first podium since Road America in June 2025. But against a driver as relentless as Palou, any small opening can become decisive.

Chip Ganassi leaves Long Beach with another statement

There was more for Chip Ganassi Racing to enjoy than just the winner’s trophy. Scott Dixon completed the podium in third, giving the team two of the top three finishers and helping lock in a Honda sweep of the top three. Kirkwood came home fourth for Andretti Global, while O’Ward finished fifth for Arrow McLaren.

The broader message was familiar. Palou did not dominate every lap, but he controlled the race where it mattered most. He stayed within reach, relied on a sharp pit crew, then managed the closing stint with the same calm authority that has defined so much of his success. Long Beach may have taken time to yield to him, but once the chance appeared, he took it like a champion.

The next stop is the Sonsio Grand Prix on May 9 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, where Palou will arrive with fresh momentum, another trophy, and the championship lead firmly in his hands.

Momentum has been difficult to sustain in the early stages of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season, and that trend adds intrigue to the AdventHealth 400 as the series heads to Kansas Speedway. The NASCAR LIVE stream will capture a race that blends contrasting narratives, from Tyler Reddick’s consistency to Kyle Larson’s search for a long-awaited return to Victory Lane.

Kansas has been a stronghold for Larson in recent seasons. The Hendrick Motorsports driver arrives as the defending winner of the spring race and has claimed the last two editions at this venue.

Yet, despite lifting the championship trophy last year, Larson enters this weekend without a race win since his previous Kansas triumph, a drought that has stretched longer than expected for one of the sport’s most dominant drivers.

“It’s kind of wild to think that it’s almost been a year since I’ve won,” Larson admitted recently. “We’re working as hard as ever as a group. We want to win. It’s just gotten really tough.”

Reddick leads the field as Kansas form takes shape

While Larson searches for momentum, Tyler Reddick continues to set the early benchmark in 2026. The 23XI Racing driver secured pole position for Sunday’s race, his fourth of the season, underlining his pace across a wide variety of track types.

Reddick will be joined on the front row by Denny Hamlin, with Joe Gibbs Racing once again well represented near the front. Ty Gibbs, fresh from his victory at Bristol, starts third, while Larson lines up fourth as he looks to translate recent speed into a breakthrough result.

The depth of the field is evident just behind them. Chase Briscoe completes the top five, with Carson Hocevar, Chris Buescher and Daniel Suarez all inside the top ten. Ryan Blaney, who has already taken a win this season, starts ninth, while Bubba Wallace rounds out the top ten.

A season of unpredictability continues

The 2026 campaign has already produced five different winners, highlighting just how competitive the current Cup Series field has become. Alongside Reddick’s early dominance, victories for Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott and Ty Gibbs have ensured that no single driver has been able to fully control the championship narrative.

That trend is likely to continue at Kansas. Intermediate tracks reward a balance of aerodynamic efficiency, tire management and long-run pace, making them one of the best indicators of overall performance. Teams that excel here often carry that form deep into the season.

For Gibbs, the opportunity to build on last week’s Bristol victory is particularly significant. A second consecutive win would mark a major step forward in his development and reinforce his position among the series’ rising contenders.

When Alex Bowman took the green flag in Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, it was his first NASCAR Cup Series action in over a month. Because fate is cruel, he barely completed a third of the race.

Bowman withdrew mid-race at Circuit of the Americas in March after he started experiencing vertigo, allowing Myatt Snider to step in for what was technically his Cup début. Anthony Alfredo and Justin Allgaier took over his #48 for the next four races.

“COTA wasn’t a lot of fun for me,” he explained. “Everything was fine until it wasn’t in the car. Dizziness, throwing up on myself, spinning, all of the things. I was going to end up running into something or somebody and the smart thing to do in that case was to get out.”

Health has been a major concern for Bowman in recent years. He missed five races at the tail end of the 2022 season because of a concussion sustained in a crash, effectively keeping him dead last among the 16 playoff drivers. Just one year later, he was out for three weeks when he broke his back in a sprint car race. This, along with a huge penalty he received at the start of the season, did him little favours as he missed the playoffs.

With the vertigo marking 2026 as yet another third season in which he had to miss time for medical reasons, there was reason to be concerned. Speaking before Sunday’s race, Bowman was frank about feeling like his career was entering a dark time.

It also didn’t help that his #48 is considered the weakest link at Hendrick Motorsports, meaning he is usually rumoured to be replaced by someone else every off-season. Such speculation only intensified at the start of 2026 when Bowman crashed out of the Daytona 500 then finished an unimpressive 23rd at Atlanta, though Snider, Alfredo, and Allgaier also underwhelmed; Allgaier’s 22nd at Martinsville is the car’s best finish so far this season.

Despite the struggles, Hendrick has firmly stood in Bowman’s corner. He faces an uphill battle in trying to make the Chase as the missed time means he is just 36th in points and must gain 20 positions to qualify.

“Honestly, when I got out at COTA, I was like, ‘This is probably it,'” Bowman admitted. “That was what was going through my head. That sucked. Thankful that I get another shot at it. […] Spent a lot of time with a lot of different doctors and had a lot of different help to go about the best rehab process possible and best practices going forward and everything to get back to where I needed to be to get back on the car.”

Bowman was cleared to return at Bristol, which was a risky call because of the high bankings and physicality of short track racing. However, while he acknowledged it is “probably the worst place possible to come back to”, he was unfazed by the challenge. He proclaimed, “I’m a race car driver, so you tell me I’m clear and I’m going to go do it.”

In hindsight, that might have been a bad call after all. Bowman qualified a mediocre 27th before being collected in a Lap 163 crash with Shane van Gisbergen, John Hunter Nemechek, and Zane Smith. Van Gisbergen had been running ahead of Bowman when he spun out, prompting Nemechek to swerve up but sandwiching Bowman against the wall in the process. While the other three were able to continue the race, Bowman’s car took too much damage and relegated him to last place.

Shane van Gisbergen went around and collected John Hunter Nemechek and Alex Bowman.
Yet another finish at the bottom means Bowman is now 36th in the standings, though he can obviously be excused by his injuries. The #48 car, with the combined efforts of the four drivers, sits a paltry 34th in owner points while its three team-mates are all in the top ten.

“Frustrating day. Really struggled with our our Ally #48 Chevy,” Bowman commented. “Thought we were okay in practice and then qualified bad and then really struggled with the handling today. Bummer, hate that.

“We didn’t get a chance to work on it, make it better and finish the race, but outside of our control. When you run that bad, stuff can happen and it happened to us. Move on to Kansas. Should be another good race track for us. This one should have been too.”

Ty Gibbs finally a Cup winner

After four agonising seasons, Ty Gibbs has finally slayed the nepo baby pejorative for good. Despite being the 2022 champion in what is now the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and a solid Cup Series rookie campaign a year later, Gibbs struggled mightily compared to his Joe Gibbs Racing team-mates.

He missed the playoffs in 2025 while the other three JGR drivers qualified, and had a disastrous start to the 2026 season. His ride was still more than safe despite his struggles as the grandson of the eponymous team owner, which understandably meant many criticised him as nothing more than a pay driver who was gifted a quality ride.

Amidst the scepticism, he chose to keep his head low. This strategy has actually worked out tremendously in his favour as he scored top-six finishes across the next five races, shooting him up to sixth in points entering Bristol.

After qualifying fifth, Gibbs ran well for much of the day but couldn’t catch pole-sitter Ryan Blaney or Kyle Larson. It wasn’t until Larson’s team-mate Chase Elliott spun with 25 laps to go that he finally found his opportunity. Rather than pit like everyone else, he opted to stay out and hope the older tyres would hold on the half-mile track.

Sure enough, it did. Multiple drivers, including his JGR colleagues Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe, opted for the same strategy, giving him a bit of a cushion. Blaney and Larson quickly catch Gibbs, but couldn’t find a way around him.

Riley Herbst was spun by Kyle Busch with three laps remaining to set up overtime. Despite the pressure, Gibbs barely beat Blaney to the line by .055 seconds, the closest finish at Bristol since the 1991 Valleydale Meats 500 when Rusty Wallace edged out Ernie Irvan by just one foot.

“I truly have a passion and love for racing,” said Gibbs. “People can say what they want, can say false things. I don’t really have an issue with it. I’m not big on social media. I just love racing cars. In a blessed position to do this. Just try to maximise my resources. I really love it.”

Life’s still unfair for Malcolm

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, sequel to the beloved 2000s sitcom, premiered on Hulu a day before the Craftsman Truck Series race on Friday. The revival takes place 20 years after the original show’s conclusion in 2006, following the antics of the now-adult titular protagonist and his family as his parents prepare to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Much of the cast from the 2000s show reprise their roles, including Frankie Muniz as Malcolm (who is established in one episode of the original series as being named after a NASCAR driver).

Unfortunately for Muniz, his luck on Friday seemed to reflect that of his character’s. While he wasn’t expected to contend for the win as Team Reaume is one of the weaker operations in the Truck Series, he was the victim of a crash with Tyler Reif on Lap 115 that relegated him to 35th and his first retirement of the season. His team-mate Clayton Green kept him from finishing last as the latter was black flagged for not meeting minimum speed.

Muniz was in position for the free pass when Reif dived to his inside off Turn 2, spinning Muniz as they entered Turn 3. Timmy Hill also incurred damage in the wreck.

“I thought we were running pretty good,” Muniz stated. “I felt pretty quick, we were in the lucky dog position, so I was trying to do some good lap times. We thought we could get the lucky dog and get back on the lead lap for the last stage. I felt really racy.

“We talked about when we get in that position where if the leaders catch us, the fast guys catch us, to protect the bottom so they know that I’m always going to go on the bottom and to make them pass me on the top. That’s what I did every single lap and everybody from 1st to 13th got by me figuring it out on the top.

“The #42 of Tyler Reif maybe got impatient. He was yelling at me and saying I’m a lapper like I shouldn’t be racing him. I’m in the lucky dog position. I’m fighting. I belong on that race track just as much as he does, just as much as the leaders do, and I’m not going to back down on that.”

Currently in his second full-time Truck season, Muniz earned much praise as a child and teen actor for his work on the original Malcolm in the Middle. During the peak of his acting career, he also pursued other projects like racing sports cars and in the IndyCar developmental ladder. His racing was eventually scaled back for reasons like a lack of funding, health issues, and occasionally dabbling in TV series and films. As his forties approached and with his life stable, Muniz resumed his motorsport career in stock cars.

Filming for Life’s Still Unfair took place in spring 2025. Hulu had to adjust its production schedule to accommodate Muniz’s rookie campaign, with racing on Friday or Saturday and filming at the Vancouver studio from Sunday through Wednesday. Muniz has been open about the gruelling calendar, but more than appreciated the experience.

His #33 truck for Friday’s race also sported a themed livery. Hulu previously sponsored Joey Gase at Iowa in 2025 to advertise King of the Hill, another revival of a popular 2000s television programme.

“It got TV time,” Muniz dryly remarked about indirectly promoting the show through the wreck. “Hopefully, people are going to watch the Malcolm in the Middle reboot right after this race.”

The NASCAR The Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway LIVE Stream brings the Cup Series back to one of its most intense venues, where 500 laps around the high-banked half-mile promise relentless action from start to finish. After a varied opening stretch to the 2026 season, the championship now shifts to a track where rhythm, aggression, and survival all collide in equal measure.

Bristol’s reputation as one of NASCAR’s toughest short tracks is well established. Cars run inches apart for much of the race, traffic builds quickly, and even the smallest mistake can trigger a chain reaction that reshapes the running order. With 37 drivers on the grid and limited space to work with, patience is often as important as speed.

Ryan Blaney will lead the field to green after securing pole position with a narrow margin over Tyler Reddick. For Blaney, the challenge is clear. Despite strong performances on short tracks across his career, Bristol has remained one of the few circuits where a Cup Series victory has eluded him. Starting at the front offers a crucial opportunity to change that narrative.

*Our NASCAR 2026 Food City 500 LIVE Stream is available in the following territories: Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Italy, Malaysia, Norway, Romania, Russia, Sweden, MENA.

Short-track intensity returns at Bristol

Alongside Blaney on the front row, Reddick continues to carry momentum as the current championship leader. While his form in 2026 has been among the strongest in the field, Bristol has not historically been one of his most consistent tracks, adding another layer of intrigue to Sunday’s race.

Behind them, the field is packed with contenders. Chase Briscoe starts third ahead of Riley Herbst and Ross Chastain, while Ty Gibbs, Chris Buescher, and defending race winner Kyle Larson are all positioned within the top ten. Larson, in particular, remains one of the most dangerous drivers on short tracks, and his ability to manage traffic over long runs could prove decisive.

Further down the grid, there are several drivers with ground to make up. William Byron’s qualifying struggles leave him starting deep in the field, while veterans like Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin will need to work through traffic on a circuit where overtaking is never straightforward.

Strategy, traffic and timing will decide the race

Unlike the intermediate and road courses that shaped recent races, Bristol places a premium on track position and tire management over long green-flag runs. Lapped traffic becomes a constant factor, forcing leaders to navigate slower cars while maintaining pace at the front.

Pit strategy also plays a critical role. With stage breaks and potential caution periods influencing decisions, teams must balance the need for fresh tires with maintaining position on track. A well-timed stop can gain multiple positions, while a mistake on pit road can prove costly in a race where margins are minimal.

Conditions could add another layer of unpredictability. Warm temperatures are expected throughout race day, which may impact tire wear and grip levels, particularly during longer runs.

Jos Verstappen says he doesn’t expect his son, Max Verstappen, to quit Red Bull because of the news that Gianpiero Lambiase would exit the team to join McLaren, despite previous comments from the four-time Formula 1 world champion.

The 28-year-old said during the 2021 F1 season that he would not wish to continue in the sport without his long-time race engineer, whom he has been partnered with since his promotion from Toro Rosso in 2016.

That came as he won his first world title and his 20th career victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with that last-lap overtake against Lewis Hamilton and highlighted the deep bond and connection between the pair.

So the comments have raised further concern that the Dutchman could walk away from F1 amid the continued collapse of his support network at Red Bull, following the departures of Christian Horner, Helmut Marko, Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley in recent campaigns.

<smartframe-embed customer-id="c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f" v="832752a5fa8dfe8a99e22550ffbf3ca8" image-id="esmeV09Byswt" theme="iy-theme" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; aspect-ratio: 1.5; max-width: 6000px;"></smartframe-embed>

Those figures were large drivers behind his success, and their departures have contributed to the current situation the team finds itself in: struggling to compete against Mercedes whilst being out of reach to Ferrari and McLaren too.

On top of this, the 2026 F1 regulations have frustrated the veteran racer as he has lambasted them with comparisons to Formula E, Mario Kart and even described them as “anti-racing”, such is his displeasure with the new engines.

A 50:50 split of power delivery from the internal combustion engine and electrical battery has forced drivers to adapt how they go racing, often focusing on protecting the recharge potential of the battery – even if it means driving against their own natural instincts.

For example, in March’s Japanese GP, Hamilton paid a hefty price for Ferrari by pushing at the safety car restart at the Suzuka International Racing Course – even though he overtook George Russell’s Mercedes.

Upon doing this, he found himself consistently down on electrical power due to minimising his braking distances and failing to moderate the throttle – something the battery did not like and punished him for.

Box office once again between the two Ferraris 🍿#F1 #JapaneseGP pic.twitter.com/bMncogOfoj
— Formula 1 (@F1) March 29, 2026

Consequently, he later tumbled from third to sixth because he was missing too much power, despite pushing flat out. This is the source of the issue and frustration for Verstappen as things currently stand.

So, things have changed drastically compared to that Abu Dhabi GP win in 2021 – something Jos was keen to point out as he says he doesn’t expect Verstappen quit amid the blow of Lambiase’s exit to McLaren, due to take place in 2028.

“We knew it for a while and we also knew when it was going to happen,” Jos told RaceXpress. “We still have 1.5 to 2 years to work with him.

“It is a huge opportunity for him, we understand it and also told him that he had to seize this opportunity with both hands. It’s up to Red Bull to replace him.

“Things have changed since then [2021], of course. Especially after four championships, you have achieved a lot together.

“However, I think he [Max] will just continue.”

The bigger pressure remains on Red Bull

That does not mean the concerns around Red Bull are imaginary. The team have already lost a number of senior figures in recent seasons, and Lambiase’s future departure only adds to the impression of a structure that has been reshaped repeatedly.

At the same time, Verstappen has not hidden his frustrations with the 2026 regulations and the way the new cars must be driven, especially with the heavier emphasis on energy management. Those frustrations are real, but Jos’ comments suggest they should not automatically be folded into a retirement prediction.

There is also a calendar context to all of this. Formula 1 confirmed in March that the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix would not take place in April because of the situation in the Middle East, leaving the championship on a break before the next round.

F1 is due to return with the Miami Grand Prix from May 1 to May 3, which gives the paddock extra time to speculate, but also extra time for emotions around the Lambiase story to settle.

For now, the clearest message is the simplest one. Yes, Lambiase leaving is a major blow for Red Bull. Yes, it touches one of the most important personal relationships in Verstappen’s career. But no, Jos Verstappen does not see it as the moment that will send his son out of Formula 1. At least from the family’s point of view, this is a painful change, not the end of the road. .
