Watalappan is a rich and creamy dessert from Sri Lanka that is made with a mixture of coconut milk, jaggery, and spices. It has a unique flavor and texture, with the sweetness of the jaggery and the nuttiness of the coconut milk complementing each other perfectly. The addition of spices such as cardamom, cloves, and nutmeg give it a warm and aromatic taste, while the egg yolks help to thicken the mixture and create a custard-like texture. Watalappan is traditionally served chilled, making it a refreshing and satisfying dessert that is perfect for warm weather.

Ingredients:

2 cups of thick coconut milk

1 cup of jaggery

2 crushed cardamom pods

2 cloves

1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg

2 egg yolks

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tablespoons water

Instructions:

In a saucepan, heat the thick coconut milk and jaggery over medium heat until the jaggery is completely melted.

Egg hoppers are a variation of Sri Lankan hoppers that have a fried egg cooked into the center of the hopper. Here's a guide on how to make egg hoppers:

Ingredients:

2 cups of rice flour

1 cup of coconut milk

1 teaspoon of sugar

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1/2 teaspoon of instant yeast

1/2 teaspoon of baking powder

1/2 cup of warm water

Oil for cooking

4-6 eggs

How to make:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the rice flour, sugar, salt, yeast, and baking powder.

Slowly pour in the warm water and coconut milk, mixing continuously to form a smooth batter.

Cover the batter and let it sit in a warm place for about 4 hours to ferment.

AWUKANA BUDDHA STATUE

Anuradhapura is the major city that decorated with thousands of buddhist monuments. Stupas and statues are everywhere in the district. Here is my new divine destination in Anuradhapura the Avukana Buddha statue.

Avukana buddha statue is not located in the Anuradhapura town. This statue stands near Kakirawa. The statue is a standing statue. There are nearly 45km from the Anuradhapura town. A bit far away from the main city, the site is worth to visit. It is better to take a tuk tuk (three-wheeler) to reach this destination.

Avukana buddha statue was built by King Dathusena. The statue is located near the Kala wewa which was built by King Dathusena too. The Avukana buddha statue was completely carved out of a large granite rock. The height of the statue is 13m. The variation of the statue is called as Abhaya Mudrawa.

MIHINTHALAYA

Mihintale, located in the Anuradhapura District of Sri Lanka, is considered to be one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the country. The site is believed to be the place where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka, and it has a long and rich history that is closely tied to the country's religious and cultural heritage.

Road to A Divine Destination

The history of Mihintale dates back to the 3rd century BC, when it is said that the Indian monk Mahinda, the son of the great Emperor Ashoka, arrived in Sri Lanka and met with King Devanampiyatissa. According to legend, Mahinda convinced the king to convert to Buddhism, and the Mihintale rock fortress was built as a monastery to house the growing number of Buddhist monks.

The Mihintale complex contains several ancient structures, including temples, stupas, and rock-cut statues, which are of great architectural and archaeological significance. The most significant of these is the Maha Stupa, which is said to contain a relic of the Buddha. The stupa is surrounded by a large number of smaller stupas, and it is considered to be one of the oldest stupas in Sri Lanka

Sago Payasam- The Delicious Recipe From A Jaffna Kitchen

Payasam is the most common dessert in Jaffna peninsula. The dessert is made with Sago seeds. Kind of white colour seeds. Simply this is a kind of porridge which is made by using sago, milk and sugar. This dessert is offered by many hotels in the Jaffna peninsula. So, let’s try another delicious Jaffna special recipe with me. It is time to have some Sago Payasam.

INGREDIENTS

½ cup of Sago seeds

4 cups of milk

1 ½ cups of Sugar

12 tbsp of ghee

2 cardamoms

3 tbsp of Cashew

3 tbsp of raisins

HOW TO MAKE IT

Put the ghee into a pan and roast cashew. Once the cashew become golden brown keep aside and roast the raisins too in the same pan. After keeping aside both of them, put the sago seeds into the pan and roast for a few seconds till they turn light brown. Add the 1 cup of water and ½ cup of milk, cook on a low temperature till the sago becomes soft. Then add the rest of the milk into the pan. Keep it in the low temperature for some few minutes and when the mixture gets thickened put the sugar into the pan and stir well till it dissolves well. Stir well and make it to simmer. Finally add the roasted cashew, raisins and cardamom into the Payasam and stir well. Now you have the one of best dessert in the world and serve your fresh payasam warm or chilled. But keep in your mind that as the Payasam cools down, the payasam will become thicker. Add some milk before serving to avoid the high thickness.

Like I said before Anuradhapura is the temple town in Sri Lanka. I have already visited as well as worshipped some significant temples and stupas. And my next stop was Isurumuniya Temple. Isurumuniya also has been considering as one of significant temples in Anuradhapura. This temple is located near to the Thissa tank. The temple was built based on a kind of big rock. The stone carvings of the Isurumuniya temple are more famous than the religious importance of the place. There are three main stone carving in the premises. They are Isurumuniya lovers, Elephant Pond and the Royal family. The stone sculptures are very attractive. The place was not so crowded but has a decent crowd. The wind which are coming over the Thissa tank cool this place nicely.

Visiting a museum is a best way to discover the pride history of a nation. Here the total Anuradhapura is a kind of museum. Ancient ruins are spreading all over the old kingdom. And the museum has more to watch. In the Anuradhapura Museum I watch some brilliant piece of sculptures and some tools which were built during the ancient civilizations. Not only that, but there are also some ancient gold coins. My favorite was there some demo structures of the famous stupas in the city. And by visiting this place you can have a deep knowledge on the glorious history of an old kingdom. It will not a perfect tour till you visit this museum and watch the fantastic archeological things.

Semolina (Rava) Kesari

Semolina (Rava) Kesari is a kind of common dessert which are served by the many hotels in Jaffna. A yellow color rectangular sweet has a unique taste. This is a free offering dessert with every rice parcel. Nut many hotels use some essence to make a low-quality product, but the original recipe is so delicious. Anyhow, here I am writing another food article of the great sweet dessert of Jaffna. It is time to have some Kesari.

Ingredients

1 cup of Semolina

4 tbsp of ghee

10 cashews

2 tbsp of raisins

2 cup of water

1 ½ cups of sugar

4 tbsp of saffron water

½ tbsp of cardamom powder

How to Make: -

Heat a pan well and put the ghee into the heated pan. Put the cashew and raising in to the pan and roast them for a while. The time when the cashew gets golden brown keep the cashew aside. Now put the semolina into the same ghee pan and roast on a low temperature for five minutes and keep it aside too. Take a deep pan and boil the 2 cups of water. Once the water boil well decreases the temperature to a low point and add the semolina into the pan. Stir well till the semolina absorbs water well. Then pour the sugar into the pan. Stir well till the sugar dissolves while keeping a low temperature. Then add the saffron water to make it colourful. Stir continuously till the mixture shows zero lumps. Then cover the pan and let it cook for few minutes. Add the roasted cashew and other ingredients to make it tastier. Finally separate the delicious dessert from the pan and it is now ready to save. If you need some extra taste add some extra ghee.

Japan is a country with a rich and fascinating history. It is the birthplace of the legendary samurai warriors and ninja assassins, who have become iconic figures in popular culture. Most popular cities in Japan are Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hiroshima and Nagasaki have a glorious and a sad story behind their history. But among the above three cities, I pick my favourite dream destination as Tokyo. The capital of Japan.

Visiting Tokyo has been a dream of mine since I was a child. This vibrant city is full of culture, delicious food, and exciting activities. I have always wanted to explore the many destinations this city has to offer and experience the unique culture that it provides. From sampling some of the best sushi in the world to visiting temples and shrines, there are endless possibilities for exploration in Tokyo. I am excited to experience all that this city has to offer and learn more about its rich history and culture. My trip to Japan in October 2016 provided me with the opportunity to experience a new culture and learn about the rich history of this country. Each destination that I visited was more and more impressive than the last. The beauty of Tokyo is unparalleled, but it is not just this city that offers an unforgettable experience. My time in Japan was filled with cultural experiences that I will never forget. I am so grateful for my time in Japan and my memories are priceless!

MEJI SHRINE

Japanese are always very close to the nature. According to them, every tree is a god. The major religion in the country is Shinto. Shinto is the most eco-friendly religion in the world. Meji Shrines is considered as one of the major Shinto shrines. This shrine is surrounded by a fascinating park. I would join the traditional rituals too. Japanese architecture has a unique design, and it would be great to spend some time watching this fantastic shrine.

TOKYO NATIONAL MUSEUM

Visiting a museum is a great way to discover the culture and history of a nation. Tokyo national museum is the largest museum in Japan. In the museums I would be able to see the great history of the legends Samurai. Samurai swords and armor are displayed at the museum, and they are the most attracted things in the museum. Japanese culture is very different than the other cultures in the world. The visit to the museum will help me to learn about the Japanese culture and the history of this proud nation.

TOKYO IMPERIAL PALACE

Just like the United Kingdom Japanese also have a Royal Family. Naruhito Emperor is holding the crown of now. Tokyo Imperial Palace is the home for the Imperial family today. The Japanese architecture is clearly visible through this fantastic masterpiece. The garden is also so fascinating to watch, and the palace is surrounded by these marvelous gardens. I have read many articles on this fabulous masterpiece and If I ever been in Tokyo, I will never miss the chance to get the access to this Imperial Palace. The passes that allow people to visit the Imperial palace is a very rare opportunity and I wish I will enough be lucky to get the pass.

TOKYO SKY TREE

Tokyo sky tree is the tallest building in Tokyo city. The sky tree is 1150 feet height and has two observation decks which give a fabulous viewpoint over the big city. Tokyo sky tree is considered as the most popular and visited destination in Tokyo city. This building has a super-fast lifting system too. I have read some articles explaining their experiences on the Tokyo sky tree and I am also willing to have such a wonderful experience. I will click some best photographs in my life on the observation decks. According to the sources there are some quality restaurants which offer some great meals in the town. So, this would be a nice stop to have an enjoyable meal.

TOKYO TOWER

The top sky-craper of Tokyo is Tokyo Tower. First time when I saw this Tokyo Tower, I thought it’s Eiffel Tower. The structure is similar with the Eifel tower. The Tokyo Sky Tree is 1092 feet high. Transmitting the television and radio signals over the Tokyo sky is the main object of building this mammoth structure. But now it is a tourist attraction too. The tower has an observation deck which gives a great view of the city, and I will spend more time in the observation deck sipping a cup of coffee watching the setting sun. I would like to climb the sky tree night. Watching the sparkling city under the stary sky will be a great way to relax the mind.

RAINBOW BRIDGE

Golden gate, London bridge are considered as the iconic landmarks for the respective countries. Rainbow bridge is the iconic symbol of the Tokyo. According to the sources Rainbow bridge is a perfect place to enjoy the views of the Tokyo Bay. The bridge has been built over the Tokyo Bay and this is the most famous bridge in this big city. I have seen a lot of pictures of this fascinating bridge and my opinion is bridge is even better at night. The bridge is lighting up at night at watching the bridge from a distant would be fascinating.

I will travel the above-mentioned destinations if I visit Tokyo. So, what about the activities. Not only the sightseeing I will have some quality time in during my visit of Tokyo. Here are the things which I will do one day in Tokyo, Japan.

HAVING A NIGHT WALK

Night life of Tokyo is really fascinating and vibrant. Tokyo is the city that never sleeps, and if you’re looking for a nightlife experience like no other, then this is the place to be. From traditional Japanese bars to world-class clubs, there are plenty of things to do in Tokyo after dark. So, I will not miss the chance to roam around this sleepless big city. Watching some iconic destinations at night will be another level of experience.

Origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, is an ancient craft that has been practiced for centuries. Origami has been used to create everything from intricate sculptures to simple decorations. It's a skill that requires patience and precision, but the end result is often stunningly beautiful. Origami can be found all over Tokyo, from stores that specialize in the art to tourist attractions showcasing origami creations. So, looking for some of the best origami in Tokyo, I will definitely visit some of the city’s top museums and galleries. I also knew some origami artworks and I know how to make peacocks and rabbits by a paper. During my time in Tokyo, I will visit some best Origami shops and I will learn few more tricks with paper too.

VISIT RYOGUKU KOKUGIKA

Ryoguku Kokugikan is a historic sumo wrestling stadium in Tokyo, Japan. It has been the home of sumo tournaments since 1909 and is the most important venue for professional sumo in Japan. It is a fascinating place to visit, especially for anyone interested in Japanese culture and history. Visitors to Ryoguku Kokugikan can watch exciting matches between some of the best sumo wrestlers from around the world. I will also learn about the history of this ancient sport and its traditions, as well as see some amazing displays of strength and agility from these incredible athletes. I am not fat enough to be a sumo player, but I will enjoy the fight of a Sumo player.

Kabuki-za theatre is a traditional Japanese form of theatre that has been around for hundreds of years. It is known for its elaborate costumes and makeup, and spectacular performances. I have watched some documentary on these Kabuki dramas and Watching a Kabuki drama will be a great experience.

Walking under the beautiful Sakura trees in Tokyo is a magical experience. Every year, millions of people come to Tokyo to enjoy the beauty of these delicate pink blooms. The best time to experience this phenomenon is during springtime when the Sakura trees are in full bloom. The best places to take a walk under the Sakura trees are Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, and Chidorigafuchi Park. All these parks offer breathtaking views of the city skyline and provide a perfect backdrop for those wanting to take photos or just relax and admire nature's beauty. Sakura flower was the first attractive thing I knew about Japan. The gorgeous flower made me mad at Tokyo. So, if I ever find myself in Tokyo during springtime, I will not lose this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Sri Lanka Special Milk Rice

Milk rice is a sweet food which has been with the Sinhalese culture over the centuries. Sri Lankans make milk rice in every special occasion, such as weddings, openings and etc. Generally, milk rice is more suitable food for the breakfast. And the aroma is amazing, and the taste is also fantastic. Milk rice is very creamy and sweet. Here is the recipe for the mouth-watering milk rice for 5 serves.

Milk Rice With Katta Sambol

INGREDIENTS

500g of rice

2 cups of thick coconut milk

2 cups of water

Salt to taste

How to Make

Wash the rice nicely two or three times and put the rice in to deep pan. Closed the pan and give a medium temperature for 15-20 minutes. When the rice becomes a kind of soft pour the coconut milk into the pan. Stir well until it mixes well. Then add some salt to taste. Again, close the pan and boil it in a low temperature for another 10 minutes. Cook till the coconut milk has been absorbed. And it is time to serve the dish. You can serve this delicious milk rice with Date Syrup, honey or something spicy.

How To Make Katta Sambol

Grind some onions and dried chilies well and spray some lime juice over the Sambol. This hot side dish is enough to finish a plate of milk rice.

Sigiriya - The Pride of The Marvelous Ancient Technology of Sinhalese Part - II

After the polished wall called ‘Katapath pawura’, it is time to watch the gorgeous, beautiful artwork of Sri Lanka. Frescoes in Sigiriya are very popular among the tourists. This colourful paintings catch eyes of everyone. A portray of some bare breasted women are really awesome to see. There are some myths weaved around these frescoes, first one is it is said that the women in the paintings were the queens of the King and according to some others these girls represent the goddess of Rain and Lightning.

According to the sources there were over 500 paintings, but most of them have been vanished for some reasons. Unfortunately, in 1967 a kind of greenish ink was splashed on the frescoes and the nation was shocked hearing this sad news. The culprit was not found, and the government closed the Sigiriya for the visitors. Luciano Maranzi, an expert in Rome was appointed to the renovation project. After putting so many efforts he ended his five months project successfully, bringing back the beauty of the frescoes. Thanks to Luciano, these fascinating frescoes are still safe showing the glorious history.

Modern Day Stairs To Reach Sigiriya

The path to the top of the Sigiriya was built recently by using some modern technology. The original path had been destroyed by the time Sigiriya was discovered. On the way to the top of the rock, you can enjoy the exotic sceneries around the Sigiriya. There are not any highlands around the site, therefore you can enjoy a fantastic scene from the stairs to the top of the rock.

On the top of the rock, you can see the ruins of a glorious nation. The ruins of the palace are still visible, and I wonder what if the palace was not destroyed. It would be great. Anyhow there is a pond on the top of the rock and according to the sources, there is a water line connecting the pond and the fountain which is located in the bottom of the rock.

There are a lot of myths around the Sigiriya. According to some Sigiriya is a center of the Aliens who used to land their UFO s. And some others say that Sigiriya is a temple which was built to worship the Sun. Anyhow Sigiriya is a kind of fantastic and must watch destination in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya is regarded as the Eighth Wonder of the World, and it deserves your attention.

Tour De Food in Jaffna

Food Shopping Is also a great thing to do as a leisure. Especially if you are in a different country or area, it is better to try some unique foods of that area. So this is a little food review on my experiences in Jaffna. Though I am not an expert on food review I thought to share my experience with you.

Thosa

Thosa is the most popular food in Jaffna peninsula. This food looks like Pan cakes, but taste is completely different. Every hotel in Jaffna peninsula offers this food as their main item. You will be offered a kind of dhal curry called ‘Sambaru’ and a Sambol called ‘Chutney’. Tear a piece of the thosa and dip it into both ‘Sambaru’ and ‘Chutney’ and put the piece in to your mouth. The taste is amazing. In some hotels you can different kind of thosas. Just like Pizzas, those also have some variety based on taste. Onion those, ghee those, masala those, Kal those, paper those etc.

Idli

Idli is basically a South Indian food. A white colour, UFO shaped food has a tasty appearance. The main ingredient is Urad dhal and, this is 100% vegan. Earlier I have posted an article on Idli mentioning the recipe too. You can enjoy the article by clicking here

Raw Banana Bajji

When you are enjoying the street foods in Jaffna, this food will definitely your favourite one. Raw banana (vazhakka) bajji is a mouth-watering snack and very cheap with comparing other snacks. It is a fried snack and have a lot of carbohydrates. Click here for the recipe.

If you ever have been Jaffna, you would definitely have the most popular snack in Jaffna. It is simply known as ‘Vada’. Basically, there are two types of vada. Dhal vada and urad dhal vada. Sigiriya- The Exotic Destination In Anuradhapura

King Kashyapa did not have a good fame in the history books. According to the sources he brutally killed his own father to be the king. Somehow his younger brother managed to escape to India. After his escaping Kasyapa knew that one day his brother will come with an Indian-backed army to revenge stole the crown. So, King Kasyapa built this rock-hewn fortress with a fascinating palace and so many things. Some sources says that the fort was originally built by King Dutugemunu, the fortress was later expanded by King Kasyapa.

Sigiriya Was A Strong Fortress For King Kasyapa

Seegirya is actually a fantastic place to build a fort. It stands alone with no mountains around and reaching the top of the fort is a mission impossible. Over 50km area can be visible and it is well enough to make some deadly blows.

Not only that this wonderful destination has got so many things to watch, first of all the main entrance is really amazing. The entrance is decorated with a face of a lion. The entrance is going through the mouth of the lion. The stone carved lion shows the pride history of the fort.

There was a water park around the Sigiriya rock with some ponds and stone made fountains. This fountain is connected with a pond which is located top of the rock. Guess what, there is a water line through a gigantic rock in 6^th century. Yes, the technology is not revealed till today. The Sigiriya fountain is the best proof to show how good the ancient technology was.

On the way from the main entrance, there is a polished wall along the left side which is called ‘Katapath Pawura’. This wall is full of some poems which were written by the normal people who visited the fort ancient. But now no one can even touch the wall. All the poems are written in ancient Sinhala language, and you cannot even understand the poems.

Hidden and Divine Destinations In Anuradhapura

Earlier I have described some of my experiences in Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya ,Ruwanwelisaya , Thuparamaya , Jethawanaramaya, Abhayagiriya, etc. Except the above divine destinations there are some more beautiful and fascinating destinations in Anuradhapura. I must tell this fact that all the above-mentioned destinations are located in Anuradhapura main city. So, this article is about some divine destinations in Anuradhapura.

Mirisawetiya

Mirisawetiya stupa is another gigantic stupa in Sri Lanka. Mirisawetiya was built by King Dutugemunu after he won the war against King Elara. There is a little story around the building of this fantastic stupa. According to the villagers, king Dutugamunu had been a ritual, that before having a food, he dedicated the food to the monks. Anyhow, one day king Gemunu accidently had a chili curry without offering it to the monks. So, he worried so much and about his mistake. As a punishment for his carelessness, he built this dagoba.

Mirisawetiya is considered as the one of most sacred places in Sri Lanka. The stupa was originally 122 metres in height. But due to the war and other reasons the stupa was destroyed, and the temple was abandoned. In the 19^th century the stupa was discovered again and went through some renovations. The process of the renovation was collapsed several times and finally in 1996 the Dagoba was renovated with 59 meters in height and 43 meters in diameter. Despite the all the above facts, Mirisavetiya is still stands fabulously scarping Anuradhapura sky.

LANKARAMAYA

Considering the other stupas like Ruwenwelimahasaya, Jethawanaramaya this is not a gigantic one. Lankaramaya was built by King Walagamba. The history of the stupa is out of the spotlight. Just like the other stupas this stupa was also left to wild and later the dagoba was renovated. A significant fact on this temple this the original structure had a kind of covering house around the stupa which was called as Watadage. Anyhow the watadage was also destroyed but you can see the ruins of the watadageya. The stone pillars are standing straight around the stupa. The diameter of the stupa is 14 meters and 10 meters in height. Among the mammoth stupas, Lankaramaya is not large, but it has a significant place among the Buddhists.
