When it comes to tourist destinations in Italy, Venice is amongst the favorites. It is one of the top destinations in Italy – on almost every tourist’s list. However, a quick tourist trip to Venice will not give you an accurate feel of what it is like to live there on an everyday basis. Let us see some pros and cons of moving to Venice.

Pros of moving to Venice

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic hit Italy hard in the past couple of months. Venice was no exception. Its residents and economy both felt the full force of the pandemic. Amidst all the fear and hardship that took place, Venetians got the chance to experience Venice without tourists once again, and soak in the beauty of the city.

Romance

In addition to the fact that it is home to some of the world’s most exquisite architecture, numerous bridges and is a labyrinth of canals, it is Venice’s overall romantic feel that captures the imaginations and hearts of people all around the world. It’s no wonder that people often want to organize weddings in Venice. If this is something that you want to do, contact a company that will help you prepare everything for your big night.

The unique feel and the city setup

It is fair to say there is no place on Earth quite like Venice. It truly is a unique place where the hustle and bustle of busy streets filled with cars and the sound of their engines have been replaced by a network of canals and gondola’s slowly, patiently gliding across the water’s surface. Floating under one of the many bridges across the canals gives you that picture-perfect postcard feeling.

Venice represents a complex network of curving alleys, some of which go in a complete circle and others which lead to a central town square. There are many ways one could get to the central town square and trying out these different routes feels like exploring the unknown. The numerous pasta, pizza, and gelato shops tucked away in these alleys along the way are an added bonus.

It must be noted that the area between St.Marc’s Square and the Rialto Bridge offers more of a tourist destination vibe than it does a feeling of the authentic Italian lifestyle. The neighborhoods in the eastern parts of Castello and northern parts of Canareggio offer a real sense of community and neighbors can often be seen sharing stories in the streets.

If Venice becomes too much for you and you need a change of scenery there are a lot of destinations that you could take day trips to nearby. Venice has an international airport and a good rail system meaning that it has a good connection to the rest of Europe and the world.

When moving to Venice you can be sure that your view will always be beautiful.

Culture

The large variety of art and cultural heritage that Venice has to offer makes it a very attractive location for history, art, and culture lovers. Venice is home to the Venice International Film Festivals which is the oldest European film festival and one of the three major film festivals in Europe. The Venice Film Festival was founded in 1932 and forms an integral part of the Venice Bi-annual festival which began in 1893. Since then, this celebration of the arts and culture has grown and now encompasses a range of Italian and international art, theatre, music, architecture, and film.

Cuisine

When we think of Italian cuisine, we immediately think of pizza and pasta, but Italian cuisine has so much more to offer. Local Venetians eat differently from what the Italian stereotype would lead you to believe. Many Venetians eat out at local “Osterie” which are like pubs/restaurants, or at “Bacari” which have more of a bar-like feel to them. At these bars, food is traditionally ordered and then eaten while standing at the bar. One example of a traditional meal would be Chicchetti which is like a Venetian take on tapas. Whilst the exact ingredients in Chicchetti can vary, spicy meatballs and olives are often amongst them.

Cons of moving to Venice

Job opportunities

While Venice has much to offer, the coronavirus pandemic showed us that the Italian economy, like so many, is very fragile. Many people lost their jobs as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and there are limited job opportunities in the city itself nowadays. Before moving to Venice be sure to look for employment opportunities online so you would have something to rely on when you decide to move to the beautiful city of Venice.

Crowds

The same things that make Venice so beautiful and attractive to many, cause one of the main problems associated with living in Venice. Due to the large number of tourists who visit the city, crowds are commonplace. The narrow streets and canals can become very difficult to navigate.

Flooding and odors

During the fall and winter, the water level in the canals often rises causing flooding in the city. This causes several problems for the city’s population, especially those living on the ground floor. The city is sinking and some even estimate it to be sinking at a rate of up to 8 inches every century. Venice even got a tourist tax in order to fund a restoration project to protect the city from sinking.

When Venice experiences long periods without rain, with low water levels a bad odor can be noticed around the city sometimes. One of the reasons for this is the presence of sewage in the canals although the locals most commonly attribute this smell to naturally occurring algae and sediments.

When considering the pros and cons of moving to Venice flooding and sinking can be an important factor.

Taxes

A major downside to life in Italy is its tax system. Taxes in Italy are higher than in many other western countries and apply to every cent you earn. This is something you should take into account before deciding on a move to Venice. On top of the national tax, you will be charged a regional or municipal tax as well. These are factors you should take into consideration when negotiating any potential salary.

Hazardous canals

Whilst the canals in Venice give it it’s unique feel, they can be a real danger, especially for young kids. The canals have no railing other than on the bridges, so falling into them is easier than you’d think. If you are looking for some tips on traveling to Venice with kids start here.

Expensive public transport

Although the waterbuses which commute around Venice are the cheapest option for getting around the city, they are still fairly expensive, especially if you need to use them on an everyday basis unless you get the resident/long-stay option.

Transportation in Venice is based on means of water transport, you can get around by foot or by water canals.

There will certainly be changes in the next few months in a way the Venice and people here live due to coronavirus, but life is slowly returning to normal. Stay informed about the situation, act according to health guidance, and stay safe. If the spread of coronavirus taught us anything, it is that you need to be prepared for any situation. When you live in a foreign country you need to have something to rely on as a support system and in terms of a financial cushion.

Venice represents a real mix of cultures due to a large number of tourists and new residents, the local community and their traditions are still strongly felt throughout the city. Whatever your reason for wanting to move, we hope this list of pros and cons of moving to Venice gave you some insight into what you can expect.

Italian heritage is much more than the world-famous art and cuisine. The complexity of modern life intertwined with historical monuments in Italy is continually enchanting visitors and turning them into ex-pats. A sincere pleasure of indulgent way of life that most Italians lead rubs off easily. Enjoying food and drinks, culture, and natural beauty in all its forms in a fast-paced world is true art. Moving to Italy is bound to teach you to appreciate it.

Advantages of moving to Italy

Life in every country has its advantages and disadvantages, but in the case of Italy, the pros outweigh the cons. Hectic life and crowds in popular destinations are a necessary evil of relying on tourism, but laid-back Italians find peaceful spots and simple pleasures with ease. The Italian countryside, however, is not as crowded as big centers. Scenic towns across the peninsula offer the most desirable work-life balance incorporating

Easy-going lifestyle

Affordable living costs

Historic landmarks at every step

Cultural richness

Picturesque landscapes

Vast transportation options

Variety and abundance of high-quality food and wine

It is too easy listing the benefits of moving to Italy. The real challenge is deciding what to do first once you move.

The ability to harmoniously mix new and old has put Italian cities among the most popular destinations in the world, for short and long visits alike.

Lifestyle

The Italian lifestyle is based on traditions that take place for centuries. Family and religion are, beyond doubt, foundations their society is built upon. Hence, visitors inevitably warm-up for the genuine sense of togetherness witnessed throughout Italy. Generations sitting together in family-owned restaurants, enjoying slow food and a quick coffee, is a fairly common sight.

Moreover, the Italian lifestyle seems to follow a simple rule: we know what we have and we’ll find time to savor it. And they do. Every region in Italy has been dedicated to improving a specific product to perfection. While you can enjoy a taste of Italy in the States and many other countries around the world, nothing beats the real thing.

Nightlife is a vital part of lifestyle for social Italians. Complemented with exquisite fresh food, quality wine, and delicious sweets, their enthusiastic outlook sweeps away (un)suspecting visitors.

Affordable living

Major tourist zones in Italy are expensive, but so it is in every other country. However, the Italian countryside is equally or more beautiful and costs less. Logically, when you decide to move overseas, it will be to enjoy the best things in life at an affordable rate. Moving to Italy can accomplish that. Moreover, eating local food doesn’t have only financial benefits; it is fresh, tasty, and produced nearby. Italians are proud of their produce and cuisine and, thus, the relative absence of popular fast-food chains is notable.

Diversity is what makes every region in Italy so unique and attractive and Italians are rightfully proud of it.

Housing costs and bills tend to drop significantly as you move away from the big tourist centers. So, to get the most for your money after moving to Italy, opt for a home in the Italian countryside. True, you will have to learn Italian to get around but if George Clooney could do it why can’t you? Furthermore, conveniently lower living costs on the outskirts of big cities don’t imply that you are cut off from the rest of the world. If you plan to settle in Italy with your kids, know that you can count on excellent public schools and equally good public healthcare. School lunches are expectedly delicious, healthy, and varied.

Ease of traveling

Exploring Italy after the move is not only encouraged, but expected. The network of public transportation is connecting small and big cities alike. Fast trains will comfortably take you wherever you wish, especially if you prefer to travel to Venice with kids. Big cities are not car-friendly, streets tend to be narrow, parking spots insufficient, and heading downtown by car can quickly ruin the impression. Hence, owning a Vespa in Italy is not a cliché but a great convenience.

If you get a flair for traveling after moving to Italy, neighboring countries will be a short, low-cost flight away. Italy itself is well covered by affordable flights, too. However, the true beauty of Italy can be discovered only if you travel by car or motorbike. Good motorways will take you close enough even to the medieval, hilltop villages. Traveling around doesn’t cost much and pays off greatly in the bounty of experience.

Locally grown fresh produce is a trademark of Italy and a basis for its world-famous cuisine.

Weather and scenery

Another benefit of affordable and comfortable travel by train in Italy is the ability to enjoy the spectacular scenery. The specific geographic location allows for a diverse landscape. Italy has it all. Mountain ranges, valleys, hills, lakes and rivers, beaches, islands, and even volcanoes. The landscape is dotted with vineyards and olive groves which are a basis for their excellent wine and oil.

The largest part of Italy settles in the Mediterranean climate zone granting hot sunny summers and cold and humid winters. The weather in general favors the outdoor lifestyle. On the other hand, the Italian countryside provides opportunities for walking, cycling, swimming, horse riding, and relaxation. With so many sunny days, things to do and places to see, moving to Italy feels like an indefinitely extended holiday.

Cradle of art

There are not many countries in the world that incorporate modern and ancient so harmoniously as Italy does. Historic centers have been built around churches, administrative buildings, and squares humming with life. Not much has changed over the centuries except that most towns have spread past their historic centers and their residents are richer for distinctive pieces of art and architecture. Every single town in Italy carries a piece of its long history at its core and is worth exploring. While visiting the pillars of art and culture in major cities is inevitable, touring the countryside will reveal more pearls than you can count.

General tips on traveling to Venice with kids

Here are some useful, general tips when preparing for a trip with your family.

Book a longer stay

As you may already know, doing things with your kids takes time. No matter how precisely you plan something, kids are often unpredictable with their needs, moods and sleeping schedules. So, to make sure you see and do everything you want in Venice, give your family more time than you first planned. Book a stay two or three days longer so you don’t end up hurrying through crowded streets (and canals) of this beautiful city.

Make a detailed plan

Even though your kids may be unpredictable, your trip schedule shouldn’t be. Make sure you make a certain plan for your trip and know which locations you want to visit. Furthermore, learn everything about those places – working hours, entry fees, kid-friendly activities, etc. Learn more about Venice, so you can be your own tour guide and make this trip more interesting for your kids, therefore keeping them interested and in a better mood.

Check where you can get discounts

Traveling with kids doesn’t need to be expensive. Many locations and facilities have special offers for family visits, as well as discounts for children’s entry fees.

Bring an ultra-light stroller or an infant backpack holder

Traveling with a baby or a toddler can be challenging in terms of walking up and down the narrow streets and bridges. So, if your child can’t walk on its own yet, be sure to bring an ultra-light and compact stroller that is easy to pack and carry around when necessary.

An even better solution would be an infant backpack holder, which makes moving through narrow streets and up and down the many steps much easier and faster. It will also make carrying items much easier since your hands are free and help you avoid lifting the stroller when crossing a bridge or going up some stairs – which can be pretty common when traveling to Venice with kids.

Things to avoid when traveling to Venice with kids

Yes, traveling to Venice with kids is possible and can be very successful. However, there are some things you should definitely escape so you can increase safety and improve the mood of your trip. Here are some things you should definitely avoid when traveling to Venice with kids:

visiting most popular locations at the busiest times – of course, you want to see places like St. Mark’s Basilica, Rialto Bridge or Doge’s Palace. And thousands of other tourists want that, too. So, when traveling to Venice with kids, be sure to avoid the main attraction in peak hours – try visiting them in the afternoon, around 4 PM or later.

not being safety conscious – since Venice is a busy place with over 20 million tourists each year, it’s not unusual to worry about safety. That’s why you should be aware of the pickpockets that often appear at the busiest places in Venice.

packing more than necessary – when traveling to Venice with kids, the main thing you should remember is that lighter is always better. Avoid carrying heavy luggage, especially if you have to carry your kids too.

spending too much money on food – kids often leave their plates half full which leads to spending more money than it’s necessary. Moreover, fancy restaurants close to the main tourist attractions are particularly pricey, so make sure you avoid them. Try local trattorias, which offer amazing local food (mainly seafood dishes) that are very affordable.

Child-friendly activities in Venice

To have a successful trip to Venice, here’s a list of kid-friendly activities you can do with your family.

Have a Vaporetto tour

Venice water buses, vaporettos, are an amazing way to see Venice from the Grand Canal. These buses are much more affordable than gondolas, which is great for the family budget. And most importantly – the kids will love the ride.

Count lions

The lion is an important symbol of this city and there are lions everywhere. Since kids love animals, it may be very interesting to go lion chasing around Venice and see some amazing locations as you go.

Chasing lion can be an interesting activity when traveling to Venice with kids – try it out!

Try out Venetian masks

Another symbol of Venice is the mask, and there are many shop and street vendors who sell carnival masks of different colors, sizes, and shapes. Kids love masks and dressing up, so trying them out and buying a favorite one as a souvenir is definitely one of the interesting kid-friendly activities.

Masks are very interesting to kids – and Venice has a lot of them!

Visit the spookiest place in Venice

Older kids probably like spooky and scary stories. That’s why visiting prisons in the Doge’s Palace is another amazing activity on the list.

Visit Murano

Murano is an island in Venice famous for glassblowers. Watching these craftsmen create amazing glass pieces can be an amazing thing to do with your kids.

Have a ride in a gondola

One of the most interesting things to do with kids in Venice is definitely a gondola ride. It’s not only a romantic thing to do with your partner, but a fun way to explore Venice with your kids, too.

Visit the Natural History Museum

For school-aged kids or older, visiting the Natural History Museum will be a lot of fun. They can see taxidermied animals, dinosaur bones and other different exhibits. So, if you have a dino-lover in the family – head over to this place!

Moving to Venice with kids

Traveling around the world often helps us pick our top places to consider when starting over, which can happen in Venice, too. However, if you have a family, you may be afraid of the whole moving process and its complexity. Well, it doesn’t need to be like that – working with a moving professional can make your move an amazing experience, and you will relocate your family in no time. Like in traveling, planning and good organization is key, as well as having professional and reliable help.

In the end…

The best way to have a stress-free trip when traveling to Venice with kids is to adjust your expectations. Don’t compare this trip to when you traveled by yourself. You may not be able to do everything as you imagined, but being prepared will help you do and see as much as possible. Creating memories with your children is precious, so be sure to enjoy every moment of your trip.

Luxury Boat Hotel in Venice

We all know Venice as “the floating city”, with it’s canals and bridges and boats, so why not stay on a floating hotel? That’s exactly what Benedini family decided to offer to locals and visitors: a luxury stay that floats on a the water known as Hotel Yacht Bert Venezia. What better way to take in the water views than from living on a 100-foot luxury yacht docked at the Marina of Sant’Elena in Castello. It’s like a stationary cruise stay, but even better, cause you can enjoy all that Venice has to offer just a few steps away and have a truly unique experience!

This yacht boasts of 6 elegant air-conditioned ensuite cabins, each with their own double bed or twin bed, flat screen TV, and views of the Venice Lagoon and Lido. Some bedrooms even have a private jacuzzi! There are also 3 decks where guests can enjoy breakfast, dinners, aperitifs or simply get some sun. A private room in this yacht will cost you around US$170/night which is fairly competitive with what hotels are charging.

The staff is always on-site to help with recommendations of what to do, see or where to eat in Venice. And let’s not forget that this yacht can also serve as a unique venue for private events such as Biennale private parties, elegant dinners, retreats, anniversaries and more. The Sant’Elena water bus stop is just a 5 minute walk away or water taxis can come and get you as you please.

For more information on how to book a private room in the yacht, the whole boat or to reserve it for an event, please contact Riccardo Benedini at +39 320 066 4393 or email yachtbertvenezia@gmail.com

Venice Home Dinners in a Historic Venetian Palace

Wine and Dine like the royalty did centuries ago in this glorious and elegant 15th century private palace in the historic city of Venice. While the city is over-populated with tourist trap restaurants, eating well in Venice is not easy, but this unique gastronomic tour rectifies that. You will be welcomed into a private Venetian house, where the owner, an incredible cook, ex-interior designer and antique collector, wanted to preserve the Venetian heritage and prepare exquisite Venetian meals just for you.

Skip the crowds and tightly packed tables, and dine in an intimate and lavish atmosphere like a true Venetian. Your meal will be prepared according to authentic traditions developed by the city’s historic contacts with Arabs, Jews, Byzantines, Armenians, and Greeks. This led to a cuisine that is simple, but enhanced by ingredients often exclusive to the Venetian lagoon.

The Menu is comprised of a Five Course Dinner including a bottle of local Veneto wine!

First Course: ANTIPASTO (bread with a cold or hot appetizer)

Second Course: PRIMO PIATTO a fresh pasta dish (homemade by Gabriella) or Risotto

Third Course: SECONDO PIATTO (which is a choice between white meat, red meat, & seafood (may include shellfish))

Fourth Course: CONTORNO (a vegetable or salad dish)

Fifth Course: DESSERT (accompanied with wine, coffee/tea, and water).

Savor the flavors of a home cooked Venetian meal in a private house in Venice, where Gabriella will cook a full dinner for you. Experience the unique cuisine of the Venetian lagoon, with terrace seating in the warm summer months to enjoy the canals and city views.

Gabriella’s Venice home dinners in Venice is a new cultural initiative which offers foodie travelers the opportunity to enjoy Italian hospitality behind the private doors of a Venetian Palace and to taste the lagoon’s unique flavors such as Sarde in Saor, Baccalà, Seppie in Umido, Tagliatelle al nero di seppia and more! It’s a new eating experience in Venice: a culinary revolution of a small closed-door restaurant (also known as underground dinners, a home supper club, or home bistro). The menu is always changing based on what’s fresh that day at the Rialto fish market or which vegetables are in season, so no two dinners are alike!

Highlights:

Savor the flavors of a home cooked Venetian meal in a historic private palace

Enjoy a full dinner prepared according to Venetian traditions

Sit on the terrace in summer and enjoy the views of Venice

Sample local cuisine and ingredients exclusive to the Venetian lagoon

Staying in Historic Venice vs. Mestre or the Surrounding Islands

While there are hundreds of options, let me begin by saying that if you’re coming to visit Venice, then Mestre is not the best option unless you absolutely have to be near the airport. Even so, I would recommend staying near Piazzale Roma or the Santa Lucia train station and leaving thirty minutes earlier, just to make the most of every minute in Venezia. Many say that you can save a few bucks but the experience is not the same. Staying on the mainland is completely different from the historic island, where you can roll out of bed and take in the sounds and life along the canals.

As I mentioned before, all the sestieri (districts) are safe, and each has its own feel, but not to worry—there is no part of Venice which doesn’t constantly remind you of its beauty and charm. There are some parts that are noisier because of the people-traffic, but unless you have a room in one of the surrounding islands, you will always hear the echoes of footsteps, neighbors opening or closing doors, and the Venetian voices, which seem to carry along effortlessly down the echoing calle (alleyways).

Below is a map with the various sestiere of Venice and what they are most known for:

Santa Croce – The innermost part is great to roam around, with fewer tourists and more local artisans.

Cannaregio – The train station, Jewish Ghetto, and longest shopping promenade are located here.

San Polo – Enjoy the oldest bridge, great restaurants, and the not-to-be-missed Rialto Market.

Dorsoduro – Mingle with the university crowd or shop at smaller boutiques. Includes Giudecca Island.

San Marco – Where the only basilica and entrance to the city are located as well as many tourist traps.

Castello – Home to the Biennale Art Exhibit, runner’s circuits, and the only area with trees and grass!

I highly believe in staying in a safe and clean place, but remember: space is limited in Venice, so if you need lots of space, you will be paying NYC prices. Rialto is right in the middle of the city, and San Marco is just a ten minute walk away from there. There is no bad spot, as long as you’re on the main island.

The only time you may want to stay on the island of Lido is for the Venice Film Festival (but prices skyrocket then), or if you prefer to hang out at the beach during the summer, but I suggest this to second-time visitors. On your first visit, just pick any hotel, B&B, apartment, or guest house anywhere in Venice. I recommend staying in B&Bs, apartments, or guest houses as I feel that is the best way to get the feel of how Venetians truly live. Many B&Bs and apartments now come with Wi-Fi access in the room, while hotels usually limit the usage to the lobby area. Hotels may have gyms, gardens or rooftops which are like gold in Venice, but now with the wide variety of private apartment rentals, I think there is something out there for everyone. Any hey, why not, live as the locals do!

That’s why I have included my personal favorites in the links below:

Apartments in Venice

B&Bs in Venice
