Almost everyone can remember the first book that made the world feel bigger.

If you think back to childhood, there's a good chance you can still picture it. Maybe it was a story about dinosaurs, pirates, hidden treasure, castles, or life on the moon. Perhaps it was a mystery that begged to be solved, an adventure across uncharted seas, or a journey into a world that existed only in imagination. The details are different for everyone, but the feeling is remarkably similar. For the first time, the world seemed much larger than your own backyard.

That is the first great adventure.

Watch a child disappear into a wonderful book and something remarkable happens. Curled up on the living room floor with books scattered all around, they are no longer sitting at home. They're climbing mountains, sailing across oceans, exploring rainforests, walking among dinosaurs, or discovering places they've never imagined. They haven't traveled anywhere at all, yet their curiosity has already carried them around the world.

One of the books that did that for me was The Man Who Sailed Around the World. I couldn't tell you every chapter today, but I remember exactly how it made me feel. It suggested that the world was impossibly large, filled with distant horizons, unfamiliar places, and adventures waiting somewhere beyond the map. Long before I ever boarded an airplane or visited another country, that book had already convinced me there was a much bigger world waiting to be discovered.

The best children's books have always done exactly that. They don't simply help children learn to read. They ignite passions that can last a lifetime. A fascination with dinosaurs becomes a love of science. A story about explorers inspires dreams of future journeys. A novel set in another country opens the door to new cultures, languages, and histories. Even when those childhood interests change, the habit of asking questions and wanting to know more often remains.

That same spirit of curiosity is at the heart of Travelreads. The books we recommend for young readers celebrate exploration in every sense of the word—through unforgettable adventures, remarkable people, extraordinary places, and the endless wonders of the natural world. Every story is an invitation to imagine something new, discover something unexpected, and see the world a little differently than before.

Not every child will grow up to travel the globe or climb a mountain. But every child deserves the chance to dream about those possibilities. The adventures we discover in books become part of who we are, encouraging us to stay curious, embrace the unfamiliar, and believe that there is always something new waiting just beyond the horizon.

Years from now, most of us won't remember every plot or every character from the books we loved as children. We'll remember something even more important: how they made us feel. They made the world seem bigger, more mysterious, and full of possibilities. The places we eventually visit may become some of life's greatest adventures. But for many of us, the first great adventure wasn't measured in miles. It was measured in pages.

Meet the feline hosts who make independent bookstores even more memorable.

There are few places in the world that invite us to slow down quite like an independent bookstore. The shelves encourage wandering rather than rushing. Conversations happen naturally. Recommendations are handwritten instead of generated by algorithms. Every visit feels a little different from the last.

And then, every so often, you notice a cat.

Our first memorable encounter came at E. Shaver, Bookseller in Savannah, Georgia. Wandering through this lovely bookstore's cozy rooms, we discovered that we weren't the only ones exploring the shelves. One of the store's resident cats had quietly claimed a comfortable chair, watching visitors with complete indifference before eventually stretching out for another afternoon nap. It felt perfectly natural, as though bookstores had always belonged to cats just as much as they belonged to readers.

The more bookstores I visit, the more I notice the same delightful pattern. Independent bookstores around the world seemed to share their shelves with feline companions. Some greet customers at the front door. Others spend the day sleeping in sunny windows, curled atop stacks of books, or quietly supervising the day's browsing from behind the register.

Perhaps that's because bookstores and cats seem to speak the same language. Neither is in much of a hurry. Both reward curiosity. Both invite us to linger a little longer than we planned.

While putting together this collection, we discovered Brandon Schultz's wonderful book, Bookshop Cats, a charming celebration of bookstore felines from around the world. Rather than trying to recreate that remarkable book, we've chosen a handful of our own favorites—including several not featured in its pages—and we'll continue adding new discoveries as readers share them with us. (Learn more about this wonderful book on our Bookshop.org shelf.)

A Growing Collection of Bookstore Cats

E. Shaver, Bookseller — Savannah, Georgia

Located in Savannah's historic district, E. Shaver, Bookseller is beloved for its welcoming atmosphere, thoughtfully curated rooms, and its resident cats. They have become part of the bookstore's identity, often greeting visitors or finding the perfect sunny place to nap while customers browse.

Shakespeare and Company — Paris, France

One of the world's most iconic English-language bookstores has welcomed generations of resident cats over the decades. Their quiet presence has become part of the magic of visiting this legendary literary landmark, where readers and writers from around the world continue to gather.

The Iliad Bookshop — Los Angeles, California

With more than 100,000 used and rare books, The Iliad Bookshop is one of Southern California's great independent bookstores. Resident cats Apollo and Zeus have become beloved fixtures, helping make every visit feel even more memorable.

Barter Books — Alnwick, England

Housed inside a beautifully restored Victorian railway station, Barter Books is famous for its fireplaces, comfortable reading spaces, and endless shelves of books. Its resident cats seem perfectly at home among one of Britain's most enchanting bookstores.

Wild Geese Bookshop — Franklin, Indiana

Wild Geese Bookshop became home to Quimby after partnering with a local animal rescue during Independent Bookstore Day. Today, the friendly cat has become one of the bookstore's best-known personalities, delighting visitors almost as much as the books themselves.

Weiser Antiquarian Books — New York City

Known internationally for rare and antiquarian books, Weiser Antiquarian Books has also been home to resident bookstore cats over the years. Their quiet companionship feels especially fitting among shelves devoted to centuries of history and scholarship.

Old Florida Book Shop — Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Specializing in rare books, maps, and vintage publications, the Old Florida Book Shop has welcomed readers since 1978. Resident cat Peter has become a familiar face to visitors and regularly appears in the bookstore's own photos and social media.

Ophelia's Books — Seattle, Washington

For decades, Ophelia's Books has embraced the tradition of bookstore cats. The shop itself was named after its original feline resident, and today's cats continue that welcoming legacy for customers who stop in to browse.

Booktenders — Barboursville, West Virginia

Booktenders is home to Copper, a rescue cat who has become part of the bookstore's personality. Like so many bookstore cats, Copper reminds visitors that independent bookstores are as much about community as they are about books.

MacLeod's Books — Vancouver, British Columbia

Anyone who has wandered through the towering stacks of MacLeod's Books knows the store feels wonderfully timeless. Its longtime association with resident cats only adds to the charm of one of Canada's most unforgettable used bookstores.

More Than Just Cats

Of course, bookstore cats aren't really why we visit these places.

We visit because independent bookstores still offer something increasingly rare: the chance to slow down, browse without purpose, and discover something unexpected. They are places built around curiosity rather than convenience, conversation rather than transactions. Every store has its own personality, shaped by the people who run it and the community that supports it.

The cats simply seem to understand that better than anyone. Maybe that's why they fit so naturally among the shelves. They remind us to linger a little longer, to find a comfortable chair, and to enjoy the simple pleasure of being surrounded by stories.

Have You Met a Bookstore Cat?

We're always looking to add new feline booksellers to this growing collection.

Have you discovered a wonderful bookstore cat during your travels? Tell us where you met them in the comments, or tag Travelreads on Instagram with your photos. We'd love to continue growing this celebration of the world's most charming bookstore cats—one bookstore, one journey, and one unforgettable feline at a time

In this busy and overscheduled world, there are very few places left in our lives where getting lost feels like a gift.

Most days are carefully planned. We move from meeting to meeting, errand to errand, notification to notification, always thinking about what comes next. Even our moments of relaxation are often interrupted by glowing screens and endless distractions. A bookstore asks something wonderfully different. It invites us to slow down, wander without purpose, and simply see where curiosity leads.

There is no wrong aisle to explore and no algorithm deciding what deserves your attention. Instead, thousands of stories wait patiently on the shelves, each offering the possibility of surprise. You might arrive looking for one particular title, only to leave captivated by a novel you've never heard of, a beautifully illustrated travel book, or a biography that sends you down an entirely new path of discovery. That freedom to browse without an agenda is becoming increasingly rare, and perhaps that's why it feels so refreshing.

As you wander, something subtle begins to happen. The noise of everyday life fades into the background. You become present in a way that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. You notice the weight of a hardcover in your hands, the texture of thick paper, the beauty of a thoughtfully designed cover, or the quiet recommendations handwritten by booksellers who genuinely love what they do. Time slows down, and for a little while, your only responsibility is to follow your own curiosity.

Far from draining your energy, bookstores have a remarkable way of restoring it. Every shelf offers a new possibility. History sits beside travel. Architecture leads to photography. A cookbook inspires tomorrow night's dinner, while a travel memoir quietly plants the seed for your next adventure. Unlike scrolling endlessly online, where each click often leaves us feeling distracted, wandering through a bookstore leaves us feeling energized. We aren't simply consuming information—we're discovering it, and discovery has always been one of life's greatest pleasures.

Perhaps the greatest thrill is finding something you never expected. Every bookstore seems to hold the possibility of an unexpected treasure waiting quietly on the shelf. One of my favorite discoveries happened in a small bookstore on Cape Cod, where I found a pretty red copy of Japan: The Official Guide, published by the Japan Travel Bureau in 1954. It looked like an ordinary vintage travel guide, but I then realized I was holding a fascinating snapshot of a nation reintroducing itself to the world less than a decade after World War II. (Read the full story in The Story Behind Japan's Extraordinary 1954 Travel Guide.)

There is another feeling that's harder to describe but just as real. Surrounded by thousands of ideas, perspectives, and stories, we are reminded of how much there is to learn. It's not about appearing intellectual or trying to impress anyone. Instead, bookstores reconnect us with our own curiosity. They remind us that learning is joyful, that asking questions is exciting, and that every great reader is simply someone who never stopped wondering. We often leave feeling a little more thoughtful, a little more inspired, and perhaps even a little wiser than when we walked in.

Travel has taught me that bookstores reveal something essential about a place. They are more than shops; they are reflections of the communities they serve. Local history fills the shelves. Regional authors share stories that never appear in guidebooks. Staff recommendations offer personal invitations into the culture of a neighborhood. Conversations begin naturally between strangers reaching for the same title or asking for the next great read.

That sense of community is one of the quiet joys of independent bookstores. Every purchase helps support people who have chosen to dedicate their lives to books, conversation, and curiosity. These are the owners who remember regular customers, organize author events, welcome children for story time, and create gathering places where ideas are shared as freely as recommendations. Supporting them feels good because you're investing in something larger than a transaction. You're helping preserve places that make neighborhoods richer, more interesting, and more connected.

Bookstores also possess an uncanny ability to solve one of life's most difficult challenges: finding a meaningful gift. Somewhere among the shelves is often the perfect novel for a friend starting a new chapter, a cookbook for someone discovering a love of cooking, a travel memoir for an adventurer, or a beautifully illustrated children's book that may become a beloved family favorite. The best gifts are rarely the ones we planned to buy. More often, they're the ones we discover while happily wandering without a destination.

Maybe that's the true magic of bookstores. We rarely leave with only the book we intended to find. Instead, we carry home new ideas, unexpected inspiration, and a renewed appreciation for the simple pleasure of curiosity. Sometimes we don't buy anything at all, yet we still leave feeling richer than when we arrived.

The Simple Joy of Getting Lost in a Bookstore

The Open Road and The Open Book

There is a particular kind of restlessness that belongs equally to the

There is a particular kind of restlessness that belongs equally to the traveler and the reader. But they are, at their core, the same impulse — both are acts of deliberate attention, and both require you to leave something behind.

On Exploration and the Unknown

A traveler arriving in an unfamiliar city and a reader opening a new book share something important: neither knows exactly what they are walking into. The map is incomplete. That is the point. Exploration, in both cases, is not about efficiency. It is about willingness — the willingness to be surprised, to follow a side street that was not in the itinerary, to linger on a paragraph that opens into something unexpected.

The best travel literature understands this instinctively. The moments of unexplained recognition are part of the gift.

On Presence and Patience

Both reading and travel reward patience in ways that almost nothing else does anymore. A book cannot be rushed without loss. A place cannot be truly seen from a moving window. The quality of attention that slow travel demands is the same quality that difficult, rewarding writing demands: a willingness to stay with something long enough for it to reveal itself.

In an era organized around speed, both the traveler and the reader practice a small, quiet resistance. They agree to be somewhere for a while. And that agreement, it turns out, changes everything.

On Learning to See

Travel changes what you notice when you come home. Reading changes what you notice everywhere. A book about the history of a city you have walked through reorders your memory of it. A journey to a place you have only read about makes the sentences feel suddenly three-dimensional. A philosopher's meditation on why we travel and whether we get from it what we think we will. De Botton pairs observations on anticipation, beauty, and the gap between expectation and experience with reflections on writers and artists who found their own answers in motion. It is a book that makes the familiar strange again, which is exactly what good travel is supposed to do.

Alone Time: Four Seasons, Four Cities, and the Pleasures of Solitude by Stephanie Rosenbloom. A New York Times travel columnist spends a year visiting Paris, Istanbul, Florence, and New York on her own terms — slowly, without an agenda, looking for what solo travel makes possible that group travel does not. Rosenbloom considers how being alone as a traveler deepens appreciation for everyday beauty, bringing into sharp relief the sights, sounds, and smells that company can sometimes crowd out. It is a book about presence as practice, and it makes a compelling case for the table for one.

The Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen. A trek through the Himalayas in search of a rarely seen animal becomes an interior journey of equal difficulty. Matthiessen brings Zen Buddhism, grief, and natural history together in one of the great American travel books — a sustained meditation on what it means to be fully present in some of the world's most demanding terrain. Few books ask more of a reader, and fewer still give back more in return.

Lands of Lost Borders: A Journey on the Silk Road by Kate Harris. A former Rhodes Scholar and aspiring astronaut, Harris cycles the ancient Silk Road from Istanbul to the Himalayas with her childhood friend over the course of nearly a year, pedaling through the remote reaches of Central Asia, Tibet, and Nepal. Her retelling is a travelogue infused with science, history, and literature, and the questions she asks along the way — about borders, exploration, and what it means to refuse to live within the lines — give the adventure a philosophical depth that lingers long after the journey ends. Winner of the Banff Mountain Book Award and one of the finest debut travel memoirs in recent memory.

Less a memoir than a magnificent commonplace book, this is Theroux's wide-ranging anthology of travel wisdom drawn from writers across centuries — from Thoreau and Twain to Chatwin and Naipaul. Theroux organizes their voices around the great themes of the road: solitude, strangeness, the transformative power of departure, the impossibility of going home unchanged. For anyone who loves both travel and literature, it reads like a feast.

Short, dense, and joyfully unclassifiable, this is a book about a journey to the end of the world that is also a meditation on curiosity itself. Chatwin's method is to follow one question until it opens into ten more — which is a fair description of what both travel and reading, at their best, do to a person.
Some cities are pleasant to visit. New Orleans insists on being experienced. The heat, the music drifting from doorways, the moss-draped cemeteries, the way the French Quarter smells of jasmine and last night's revelry; it all adds up to something that simply cannot be found anywhere else in America. For book lovers, there's an additional layer: New Orleans may be the most literarily saturated city in the country. Writers have been falling under its spell for centuries, and the stories it has inspired are among the most beloved in the English language.

Whether you're planning your first visit or your fifth, here's why New Orleans belongs at the top of every reader's travel list.

A City That Has Always Called to Writers

New Orleans has a way of finding writers or perhaps more accurately, writers have always found their way to New Orleans.

William Faulkner arrived as a young man and wrote his first novel, Soldier's Pay, while living in Pirate's Alley in the French Quarter. The house where he lived and worked still stands at 624 Pirate's Alley — and it is now, fittingly, one of the finest small bookshops in America (more on that below). Sherwood Anderson was here too, and it was Anderson who encouraged the young Faulkner to keep writing.

Tennessee Williams called New Orleans his "spiritual home" and the French Quarter "the last frontier of Bohemia." He wrote A Streetcar Named Desire in a boarding house on Toulouse Street in the 1940s, and the city never quite left his imagination. The annual Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival — complete with its famous Stanley-and-Stella shouting contest — celebrates his legacy every spring.

Anne Rice was born here, and though she lived away for many years, she returned to the Garden District in 1989 and set six of her novels in and around the city, including The Witching Hour, which is set in her own mid-19th century home on First Street. The gothic grandeur of New Orleans, with its above-ground tombs, its lush decay, its old-world elegance, was the perfect landscape for her imagination.

The roster goes on: Mark Twain frequented the Old Absinthe House. F. Scott Fitzgerald passed through. Truman Capote claimed to have been born in the Monteleone Hotel (a claim the hotel is happy to encourage). The Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone has welcomed Faulkner, Hemingway, Williams, Eudora Welty, and Anne Rice. There is something about New Orleans that doesn't just attract writers, it produces them.

Three Books to Read Before You Go

1. A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

If there is one novel that captures the absurdist, larger-than-life spirit of New Orleans, it is this one. Set in the early 1960s, the book follows the magnificently insufferable Ignatius J. Reilly — medievalist, philosopher, and hot dog vendor — as he lumbers through the city in a state of perpetual outrage. Toole never saw it published; he took his own life in 1969. His mother spent a decade getting the manuscript into print, and when it finally appeared in 1980, it won the Pulitzer Prize. Reading it before you visit means you'll see the city with a knowing smile — the French Quarter streets, the oyster bars, the peculiar pride of New Orleans's characters all come alive on every page.

2. Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice

The novel that launched one of the most beloved series in modern fiction is also a deeply felt love letter to New Orleans. Rice sets the early sections of the book in 18th and 19th century Louisiana, and the city's atmosphere — its beauty, its danger, its complicated history — runs through every page. Walking through the Garden District or the French Quarter after reading this novel takes on an entirely different quality. The shadows feel older. The architecture more conspiratorial. It is, frankly, the ideal companion for a city that has always trafficked in mystery.

3. Mosquito Supper Club: Cajun Recipes from a Disappearing Bayou by Melissa M. Martin

A cookbook belongs on this list because this one reads like a love letter to a place. Melissa Martin grew up on the Louisiana coast and has spent over 25 years in New Orleans, where she runs the acclaimed Mosquito Supper Club restaurant. Her debut cookbook won the James Beard Award for Best Book in U.S. Foodways and was named Cookbook of the Year by the International Association of Culinary Professionals, and it earned those honors by being far more than a collection of recipes. Woven through the duck gumbo, crawfish étouffée, and cane syrup cake are stories of shrimpers, oystermen, and bayou farmers whose way of life is threatened by rising waters and coastal erosion. It is a book about food as memory, culture, and survival. Reading it before your trip will deepen your appreciation for everything on your plate, and for the fragile, extraordinary world that produced it.

The Bookstores You Must Visit

New Orleans takes its bookshops seriously, and the city's independents are as distinctive as the neighborhoods they call home.

Faulkner House Books is the essential literary pilgrimage. This is the actual apartment where William Faulkner lived and wrote in the 1920s, now a small, beautifully curated bookshop specializing in Southern literature and first editions. It is not a large store, but it is an extraordinary one. Even if you leave empty-handed, simply standing in those rooms is worth the visit.

Garden District Book Shop is a beloved neighborhood institution that has long championed local authors and hosted countless book signings and literary events. In 2024, it unveiled Bar Epilogue — serving literary-themed cocktails — making it perhaps the only bookshop in America where you can browse new releases over a beautifully named drink. It is the kind of place that makes you want to move to New Orleans.

Octavia Books in Uptown is a warm, independent shop with a well-curated selection and a loyal following. It connects directly to the adjoining Café Malou, a breakfast and lunch spot, meaning you can spend a morning moving seamlessly between bookshelves and coffee cups, which is, for many readers, the definition of a perfect day.

Baldwin & Co. in the Marigny is a Black-owned bookstore and coffee shop with a strong focus on titles from Black authors across all genres.
If you've been following Travelreads for a while, you already know we're passionate about amplifying the women who are redefining travel literature — writers who swap postcards for hard truths and trade glossy itineraries for something far more interesting. We're back with another roundup, and this time we're going deeper: three books that deserve a spot on your shelf, three writers whose careers are worth following closely, and a highlight on a brand-new anthology that's making waves right now.

Three More Books to Add to Your Reading List

Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle by Dervla Murphy

If you haven't encountered Dervla Murphy yet, prepare to feel slightly humbled. In 1963, the Irish writer cycled solo from Dunkirk through frozen Europe, across Persia and Afghanistan, over the Himalayas, and into India, during one of the worst winters on record. Full Tilt reads like a dispatch from another world: gritty, funny, and utterly unsentimental. Murphy wasn't performing adventure; she was just living it, and her writing has the rare quality of making you feel both the cold and the joy of the road. For anyone who thinks modern travel writing invented the idea of the independent woman traveler, this book is a very satisfying corrective.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic for good reason. When Frances Mayes bought a crumbling villa in Cortona on what can only be described as a glorious impulse, she gave us one of the most sensory, warm-hearted travel memoirs ever written. This isn't a book about ticking off sights, it's about the slow, delicious work of belonging somewhere new: learning the language through food, navigating Italian bureaucracy with humor, and falling in love with a place one restored tile at a time. It's the kind of book you read with a glass of wine and immediately start planning a trip.

Wanderers: A History of Women Walking by Kerri Andrews

This one sits at the intersection of literary history and travel writing, and it belongs on every Travelreads shelf. Andrews profiles ten women across three centuries — from the 18th-century poet Elizabeth Carter to Dorothy Wordsworth, Virginia Woolf, Nan Shepherd, and Cheryl Strayed — for whom walking wasn't exercise but a way of thinking, creating, and claiming space in the world. It's a book that quietly makes the case that some of the most radical travel has always happened on foot, and that women have been doing it, and writing beautifully about it, for far longer than the cultural conversation acknowledges. Essential, and quietly motivating.

Three Women Writers Worth Your Attention

Marcia DeSanctis — A Contributing Editor at Travel + Leisure and a seven-time Lowell Thomas Award winner (including Travel Journalist of the Year), DeSanctis writes about Europe with an intimacy that most writers never quite achieve. Her essay collection A Hard Place to Leave: Stories from a Restless Life captures a particular kind of wanderlust — the longing that doesn't go away even after you've arrived. She's one of the sharpest voices working in the genre today.

Kira Salak — In 1995, Salak became the first Western woman to traverse Papua New Guinea solo, traveling by dugout canoe and on foot through remote jungle. She wrote about it in Four Corners and hasn't let up since. Salak writes about places and experiences that most travel writers simply don't go, physically or emotionally, and her work consistently refuses the comfortable narrative.

Freya Stark — Long before solo female travel had a hashtag, Freya Stark was trekking into the unmapped valleys of western Iran and the mountains of Lebanon armed with little more than curiosity and extraordinary nerve. Writing through the early and mid-twentieth century, she produced dozens of books that combined meticulous geographical observation with lyrical, unhurried prose. Her debut, The Valleys of the Assassins, remains a landmark of the genre and proof that the spirit of adventure has never belonged exclusively to men.

Special Highlight: The Best Women's Travel Writing, Volume 13

If you want a single book that captures the full, glorious range of what women are writing about the world right now, look no further. Volume 13, edited by Lavinia Spalding, her seventh time helming the series, brings together 27 writers including Roxane Gay, Susan Orlean, Ann Hood, Faith Adiele, and Marcia DeSanctis. The essays span all seven continents and explore how travel can illuminate, heal, inform, and transform a life, with themes ranging from kindness and adventure to motherhood, spirituality, identity, and resilience. What makes this anthology so valuable isn't just the caliber of the names, it's the range. AFAR described it as "sorrowful and joyful, the positive side of travel and the negative, reflecting the duality many travelers face." That's exactly right. This is travel writing as it should be: honest, contradictory, alive. It was published June 9, 2026, so it's fresh off the press and the perfect summer read.

The throughline connecting all of these writers, whether they're cycling the Himalayas, or restoring Tuscan farmhouses, is that they're paying real attention and sharing a voice that needs to be heard. That's what keeps us coming back to women's travel writing.

Women Who Write the World: A Literature of Restless Women

Beauty in Your Backyard: Why I Looked for Adventure Everywhere Except Home

When Jackie and Mark bought The Beast, a vintage, six-wheel army lorry

** Guest Post ** Jacqueline Lambert, Award-Winning Travel Humour Writer, Nomad, & Dogmother

Like many travellers, I used to think that “adventure” had to involve at least a long-haul flight or a whiff of diesel at some questionable third-world border crossing. As a UK citizen, I can’t believe I saw New Zealand before I visited Scotland. Why did I go halfway around the world when I had THAT on my doorstep?! Yet, so often, we dismiss our doorstep in the mistaken belief that we can only find amazing landscapes, excitement, and cultural enrichment in exotic, faraway lands.

That’s not to say I never had grand plans to explore my home turf. I was saving it for my frail dotage – for when I was too old and decrepit to backpack around Asia or overland through Kazakhstan. I had Britain earmarked as a retirement plan. Gentle, leisurely – and filled with lashings of tea and cake. My husband, Mark, and I quit work in 2016 to become full-time nomads. Initially, we toured Europe in a caravan (RV trailer) with our four dogs. Then in 2020, Brexit – Britain’s exit from Europe – jeopardised our freedom of movement and prompted me to utter a life-changing sentence to my beloved: “Let’s go to Mongolia!” This Brexit-busting plan led to a hasty impulse purchase. We bought The Beast, a colossal 6×4-wheel-drive ex-army truck, blind off the internet. Our intention: to create a ‘Go Anywhere’ expedition vehicle to replace our trusty trailer, since we were fairly sure Caravan ‘Kismet’ (‘Fate’) would not survive the Gobi Desert.

Then COVID struck. Lockdowns were an opportunity to build our Beast, and imagine ourselves crossing deserts, mountain passes, and possibly sinking into a Mongolian marsh. What we didn’t imagine was a pandemic closing every border except the one around our own driveway. After eighteen months of blood, sweat, and Sikaflex adhesives, we triumphantly rolled out in our fully off-grid home-on-wheels – only to discover that the furthest we could legally travel was our own native land.

At first, this felt like gearing up to conquer Everest, before being dispatched to the kiddies’ climbing wall at the local leisure centre. But once we hit the road, something surprising happened. We fell back in love with an old flame. We already knew that the UK – our own backyard – was staggeringly beautiful. But like the girl next door, she’d always been there, languishing quietly in the wings. Familiarity meant that we not only failed to notice her unique charms; we took them completely for granted. In all my global travels, I’ve not found anywhere that comes close to the variety of landscapes, culture, and history crammed into so small an area. Britain is an unbelievably compact marvel. Packed onto an island three times smaller than the US state of Texas you’ll find rugged mountains, sandy beaches, windswept cliffs, tranquil lakes, ancient forests, rolling downs, and stark moorland. There are vibrant cities, picture-perfect villages, and historical sites whose timescales span from the present back into prehistory. Although I’ve stood on six of the seven continents, my favourite view on Earth remains the incredible 360-degree panorama from the top of Hengistbury Head near Christchurch in Dorset.

Forced into a British odyssey in a ludicrously unsuitable vehicle, we discovered graffiti scratched by a soldier sending a message down the centuries, a tiny hamlet of 35 residents that almost changed the course of Britain’s history, and a sleepy market town that was England’s first capital – and home to a flying monk, the country’s earliest tiger casualty, and an internationally famous medieval chronicler. Too frequently, the familiar becomes invisible – until a sudden jolt compels you to look again. I spent so long hurling myself across continents in search of shock and awe that I overlooked the wonders waiting right outside my front door. Touring Britain was every bit as rewarding, exciting, and gloriously unpredictable as any safari to distant lands.

Our journey taught me that adventure isn’t a postcode – it’s a mindset. It’s about curiosity, openness, and saying, “Yes!” to whatever’s around the next corner. Even if that corner takes you to Corby rather than Kazakhstan. So, if you’re saving your own doorstep ‘for later’, why not think again? Grab your boots, fuel up your van, stick your pooch on a lead, and go.

Now! You never know. The hidden beauty of your backyard might just surprise you!

Getting kids to love reading doesn't have to be complicated. It's really about finding the right books and making reading feel fun, and not forced. When a child discovers a story that grabs them, reading stops being homework and starts being something they actually want to do. The key is keeping things relaxed and letting kids have some control. Take them to the bookstore or library and let them browse. When they pick their own books—even if it's the same dinosaur book for the hundredth time—they're more invested. Mix reading into regular life: bedtime stories, audiobooks in the car, or reading together on a lazy Sunday morning. The goal is making books feel like entertainment, not a chore.

Here are seven books that consistently hook young readers and help develop a genuine love of reading:

1. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

This picture book packs serious emotional depth into just a few pages. Max's journey to the land of the Wild Things and back home again resonates with kids dealing with big feelings. The illustrations are captivating, and the story validates children's emotions while showing them that imagination is powerful. It works for kids ages 3-7 and often becomes a book they return to as they grow, discovering new layers each time. Parents appreciate how it opens conversations about anger, adventure, and the comfort of home.

2. Charlotte's Web by E.B. White

This chapter book is often a child's first experience with a story that makes them cry—in a good way. The friendship between Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider teaches empathy, loyalty, and that saying goodbye is part of life. It's perfect for ages 7-10 and works well as a read-aloud for younger kids or independent reading for older ones. The farm setting and animal characters make complex themes accessible, and many kids finish it with newfound respect for the natural world and a deeper understanding of what friendship really means.

3. The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

This modern adventure follows Roz, a robot who wakes up alone on a remote island and must learn to survive in the wilderness. For ages 8-12, it's a brilliant exploration of adaptation, belonging, and what it means to find your place in the world. As Roz explores the island, makes unlikely friends with the animals, and learns to navigate an entirely foreign environment, kids see themes of discovery and resilience play out in fresh ways. The story works on multiple levels—it's exciting and fast-paced while also raising questions about nature, technology, and home. Many readers finish it and immediately want the sequels, making it an excellent gateway to series reading.

4. Matilda by Roald Dahl

Matilda herself is a book lover, which makes this story particularly effective at encouraging reading. Kids identify with her intelligence, her frustrations with unfair adults, and her magical abilities. For ages 7-11, it validates smart kids who feel different and shows that reading itself can be an act of rebellion and empowerment. Dahl's humor keeps the pages turning, and the message that knowledge is power resonates long after they finish. Many reluctant readers get hooked on this one because Matilda makes being a bookworm look cool.

5. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

This fantasy classic offers everything: a hidden magical world, talking animals, good versus evil, and siblings who must work together. For ages 8-12, it's often a gateway into longer fantasy series. The wardrobe itself becomes symbolic—kids start seeing ordinary objects as potential portals to adventure. The themes of courage, sacrifice, and redemption work on multiple levels, making it a book that grows with readers. It also naturally leads to the rest of the Narnia series, giving newly hooked readers more content to explore.

6. Wonder by R.J. Palacio

This contemporary novel tells the story of Auggie, a fifth-grader with facial differences starting school for the first time. For ages 8-12, it's a powerful lesson in kindness, empathy, and seeing beyond appearances. What makes it especially engaging for young readers is the multiple perspectives; the story shifts between different characters, showing how the same events look through different eyes. Kids often report that it changed how they think about others and themselves. It sparks important conversations about bullying, friendship, and acceptance without feeling preachy. The book's popularity means many kids have friends who've read it too, creating natural opportunities to discuss the themes together.

7. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

This action-packed adventure introduces Percy, a kid with dyslexia and ADHD who discovers he's actually a demigod. For ages 9-13, it's the perfect blend of humor, mythology, and relatable struggles. Riordan cleverly weaves Greek myths into a modern American setting, making ancient stories feel relevant and exciting. What hooks reluctant readers is the fast pace—there's always another monster to fight or mystery to solve. Percy's learning differences are portrayed as strengths in the world of demigods, which resonates deeply with kids who struggle in traditional school settings. It's the first in a long series, so once kids are hooked, they have plenty more to read. Many parents report this was the book that finally turned their non-reader into someone who couldn't put books down.

Why Books Make Better Gifts Than Toys

Books don't need batteries, they don't break, and kids don't outgrow them the same way they do toys. A good book gets read multiple times, passed to younger siblings, and remembered years later. Picture books for toddlers, early readers for kindergarteners, chapter books for elementary schoolers… there's always something age-appropriate that will capture a child's imagination. Unlike the latest trending toy that'll be forgotten in three months, books become part of a child's story.

Building Lifelong Readers

Developing reading skills and a love of books doesn't require rigid schedules or forced reading time. It happens when books are accessible, when adults read too (kids notice), and when stories are shared experiences. Whether it's letting a child stay up fifteen extra minutes to finish a chapter, asking what happened in their book over dinner, or simply having a house full of books to choose from, these small things add up. Once a child finds that first book they can't put down, something clicks. They realize reading isn't something adults make them do—it's a way to experience adventures, learn about anything they're curious about, and escape into different worlds whenever they want. That's when the real magic happens, and that love of reading tends to stick with them for life.

Books to Spark a Love of Reading for Kids

The Best Six Books for Exploring New York City

There’s something about New York City that sparks the imagination long

There’s something about New York City that sparks the imagination long before someone ever arrives. Its neighborhoods, characters, and energy have been captured by countless writers, each adding their own lens to the city that never sleeps. For anyone visiting New York, diving into a few thoughtfully chosen books can make the experience richer, more personal, and more memorable. Here are some top recommendations on books to help tourists transform to temporary New Yorker, revealing the city's hidden layers that even longtime residents still discover.

Dear New York by Brandon Stanton

Brandon Stanton, creator of Humans of New York, returns with his most intimate project yet—a visual journey through all five boroughs that captures New York as only he can. Dear New York features hundreds of never-before-published photographs and stories, each one revealing the contradictions that make the city breathe: beauty and struggle, isolation and connection, dreams and hard-won survival. It's a love letter to the voices that rarely get heard and the faces that make up the soul of the world's most complex city.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

This classic novel isn’t a guidebook in the traditional sense, but it’s a story that breathes life into Brooklyn’s streets in the early 20th century. Following young Francie Nolan as she comes of age in Williamsburg, it gives readers a deeply human view of the struggles and small joys of immigrant families. While Brooklyn has transformed in countless ways since then, the emotions and sense of place linger. Visitors who walk through Williamsburg today can still imagine the echoes of Francie’s world and appreciate how layers of history have shaped the borough.

Walk with Me New York by Susan Kaufman

For those who like to experience a city visually, Walk with Me New York is a treasure. It’s a beautifully photographed love letter to the details that make New York so unique—stoops, brownstones, iron railings, flower-filled window boxes, and charming street corners. It’s the kind of book that inspires readers to slow down while exploring, to look up and notice the small, ordinary things that give each neighborhood its personality. Carrying its spirit on a walk through Greenwich Village or the Upper West Side makes the city feel both grand and intimate at the same time.

That’s So New York: Short (and Very Short) Stories about the Big Apple by Dan Saltzstein

This collection is a fun, modern take on the city, told through bite-sized stories that capture the quirks, rhythms, and personalities of New York. Each piece offers a snapshot of life in the Big Apple—sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, always distinctly New York. It’s perfect for dipping into between subway rides or while sipping coffee at a neighborhood café. For visitors, the book provides a patchwork of impressions that feel like conversations overheard on the streets.

The Lonely City by Olivia Laing

For a more reflective take, The Lonely City explores what it means to be alone in one of the busiest places in the world. Blending memoir, art criticism, and history, Laing looks at artists who lived and worked in New York and how the city shaped their solitude. It’s a thoughtful companion for anyone who might feel both connected and isolated while exploring a metropolis of millions.

This Is New York by Miroslav Šašek (Children’s Classic)

No family trip to New York would be complete without something for the little ones, and This Is New York is a timeless choice. Originally published in 1960 and reissued in recent years, it’s full of vibrant illustrations that capture the magic of the city’s landmarks and neighborhoods in a way that’s accessible to children. Reading it together makes exploring places like Central Park, Times Square, or the Statue of Liberty all the more fun and meaningful for kids (and nostalgic for adults).

Final Thoughts

New York City is more than just a destination—it's a living collection of layered history, diverse neighborhoods, and the people who bring it to life.
Travel writing has long been dominated by male voices, but some of the most compelling and honest accounts of the world come from women who've ventured far beyond the familiar. These amazing five books offer something rare: perspectives that challenge assumptions, reveal hidden corners of the world, and remind us why we read about places we may never go.

Walking with Nomads: A Journey Through the Moroccan Sahara by Alice Morrison

Alice Morrison traded her life as a BBC journalist for the Moroccan desert, and in Walking with Nomads, she documents her 2,000-kilometer trek across the Draa River valley with a Berber family. This isn't a romanticized tale of "finding oneself" in exotic locales; it's an unflinching look at the physical demands of nomadic life, the complexities of cross-cultural friendship, and what happens when you genuinely embed yourself in a way of life that's disappearing. Morrison writes with humor and self-awareness about her own limitations while offering deep respect for her companions.

On the Shadow Tracks: Leaving Footprints Across India and Afghanistan by Robyn Davidson

Robyn Davidson first became known for crossing the Australian outback with four camels in the 1970s. On the Shadow Tracks finds her decades later, retracing the migration routes of the Rabari people across India with their herds. Davidson writes about memory, aging, and what it means to return to nomadic life when your body no longer cooperates the way it once did. Her prose is spare and honest, grappling with the tension between outsider observation and genuine participation.

Black Ghosts: A Journey Into the Lives of Africans in China by Noo Saro-Wiwa

Noo Saro-Wiwa, daughter of executed Nigerian activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, spent five months traveling through China investigating a little-known community: African economic migrants living in the People's Republic. Her encounters include a cardiac surgeon, drug dealers, visa overstayers, and men married to Chinese women who speak English with Nigerian accents. Saro-Wiwa explores how Africans navigate a society known for its unprogressive views on race, where Black people lack the cultural currency they hold in the West. The title refers to the derogatory Chinese term for Africans, but also captures their precarious status—people who can live in China for a decade with Chinese spouses and half-Chinese children yet still only qualify for one-year visas. Written with candor and sharp observation, the book won the Stanford Travel Writing Award in 2025, recognizing Saro-Wiwa's revealing portrait of this poorly documented migration.

In the Shadow of the Mountain: A Memoir of Courage by Silvia Vasquez-Lavado

Silvia Vasquez-Lavado's In the Shadow of the Mountain is part mountaineering memoir, part reckoning with trauma. The Peruvian-American author writes about climbing the highest peaks on each continent while confronting the sexual abuse she experienced as a child. This isn't a straightforward adventure narrative—Vasquez-Lavado braids together her physical journeys with the harder internal work of healing, creating something raw and necessary. Her voice is unflinching, particularly when describing how she used mountains as both escape and therapy.

Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure by Sarah Macdonald

When Sarah Macdonald's partner was posted to India, she reluctantly followed—and found herself in a country she'd previously dismissed after a difficult backpacking trip years earlier. Holy Cow chronicles her attempts to understand India's spiritual landscape through immersion: she tries everything from ashrams to Vipassana meditation, Catholic services to Sikh temples. Macdonald writes with self-deprecating humor about her own prejudices and misconceptions, creating a book that's as much about confronting your own assumptions as it is about India itself.

The Best Women's Travel Writing Series

For readers hungry for more voices like these, the Best Women's Travel Writing series, published annually, offers a vital collection of essays from women writing about the world. Each volume gathers pieces that range from humorous misadventures to profound cultural observations, from solo journeys to family travels. What unites them isn't a single style or destination but a commitment to honest storytelling—these writers don't perform fearlessness or fake epiphanies. They write about being uncomfortable, making mistakes, and seeing clearly. The series has become essential reading precisely because it refuses to limit what women's travel writing can be, showcasing voices that are funny, angry, contemplative, and always paying attention.

These books prove that the best travel writing isn't about ticking off destinations or achieving some manufactured transformation. It's about attention, honesty, and the willingness to sit with complexity—qualities that these brilliant women bring to every page.

Extraordinary Travel Writing by Extraordinary Women

Why Travelreads is Obsessed with Readaways (And You Will Be Too)

Travelers are rewriting the rules of vacation planning in 2026, trading

Travelers are rewriting the rules of vacation planning in 2026, trading packed itineraries for peaceful escapes centered around books. According to Vrbo's latest insights in the annual Unpack '26 travel trends report, 91% of travelers are seeking getaways centered around reading, relaxation, and quality time with loved ones. The rise of Readaways, literary-themed vacations designed for unwinding with a good book, is reshaping how people plan their time off.

Not Your Average Beach Read Situation

Taking a stack of books on vacation isn't exactly groundbreaking. But Readaways represent something different entirely. "It's not new to take a stack of books on vacation, and that's not what Readaways are," says Melanie Fish, VP of Communications at Expedia Group. "These are restful retreats shared with fellow book-lovers, where the real adventures unfold on the page – from a quiet corner in a cozy library, a porch swing, or a pool lounger."

The reading is the point. Everything else, the location, the accommodations, the daily rhythm, gets designed around creating the perfect environment for getting lost in a good book. No museum sprints. No packed restaurant reservations. Just pages and peace.

Instagram Made Me Book It

The numbers tell the story. Pinterest searches for "book club retreat ideas" have surged by 265%. Vrbo has seen reading-related terms like "library" or "reading retreat" in guest reviews nearly triple globally. Travelers are actively hunting for properties that cater to their reading habits.

Social media deserves a lot of credit here. Bookstagram has turned reading into a visually stunning lifestyle choice. Scroll through the hashtag and there are thousands of perfectly styled shots: hardcovers stacked beside steaming mugs, paperbacks splayed open on vintage quilts, reading nooks bathed in golden hour light. These posts do more than showcase books. They sell an entire aesthetic and, increasingly, a vacation concept. Readers see those dreamy images of coastal cottages with floor-to-ceiling windows or mountain cabins with overstuffed armchairs, and they want in.

The Perfect Reading Spot is Everything

Here's the thing about a truly great reading spot: it transforms the entire experience. Sure, readers can technically enjoy a novel anywhere, but there's something magical about the right setting. A window seat with morning light streaming through. A hammock strung between two trees with a view of the mountains. A deep armchair positioned perfectly in a book-lined room. These aren't just nice amenities. They're the whole vacation.

Coastal homes with ocean views have that effortless drama. The sound of waves as background noise while flipping pages feels impossibly luxurious. Mountain chalets offer the opposite appeal, all cozy isolation and crackling fireplaces. Countryside retreats provide the kind of quiet where readers can actually hear themselves think. The location sets the mood for whatever story unfolds on the page.

Why Everyone's Suddenly Into This

The post-pandemic reassessment of how people want to spend their time keeps influencing travel choices. The pressure to see and do everything has lost its appeal. Turns out, actually feeling rested on vacation matters more than an impressive itinerary.

There's also the always-on problem. Modern life doesn't offer many guilt-free reasons to completely disconnect. But when the vacation plan centers on reading, there's built-in permission to ignore emails and let the phone battery die. Nobody questions why someone on a Readaway isn't posting constant updates or responding immediately to messages.

Plus, Readaways often cost less than activity-packed trips. No expensive excursions, no advance tickets, no pressure to hit every trendy spot. The money goes into the accommodation itself, which becomes the destination rather than just a place to crash between adventures.

What This Means

The rise of Readaways suggests that after years of hustle culture and overscheduled calendars, people are ready for slower, simpler pleasures. Sometimes the best vacation doesn't involve seeing new sights or checking items off a bucket list. Sometimes it just means finding a comfortable chair, opening a good book, and staying there as long as the story demands. No apologies necessary.

Why Travelreads is Obsessed with Readaways (And You Will Be Too)

Travel Smarter: 4 Game-Changing Books That Unlock Savings

Whether you're dreaming of European backpacking trips, luxury getaways on a

1. A Stranger in Your Own City: Travels in the Middle East's Long War by Ghaith Abdul-Ahad

Winner of the 2024 Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year, this book hits differently because Abdul-Ahad isn't an outsider looking in—he's an Iraqi journalist who's witnessed his region transform over decades. What makes this remarkable isn't just his access to places most of us will never see, but his ability to find moments of unexpected humanity in the midst of chaos. Abdul-Ahad doesn't romanticize or sensationalize. Instead, he shows us the shopkeeper who jokes about customers while mortars fall nearby, the families who've learned to read the subtle differences between different types of gunfire. It's devastating and beautiful and utterly real.

2. Season of Migration to the North by Tayeb Salih

Okay, this one's technically fiction, but it reads with the intimacy of memoir. Set between Sudan and London, it's the story of a man returning home after studying abroad, grappling with identity, colonialism, and what "home" even means when you've been changed by distance. Salih captures something universal about the experience of being caught between worlds—which, let's be honest, describes a lot of life in our globalized world. The writing is gorgeous, the insights cut deep, and you'll find yourself thinking about it months later.

3. The Bookseller of Kabul by Åsne Seierstad

This Norwegian journalist embedded with a bookseller's family in post-Taliban Kabul, and the result is an intimate portrait that's both eye-opening and controversial (the family later disputed some of her portrayals, which adds its own layer of complexity to consider). What comes through powerfully is the texture of daily life—the negotiations, small rebellions, and adaptations people make when living under restrictions we can barely imagine. It's a reminder that even in the most controlled societies, human spirit finds ways to express itself.

4. The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan

This isn't technically a travel book, but it follows an incredible journey spanning decades and continents. Tolan traces the story of a Palestinian family's lemon tree in their front yard, and what happens when an Israeli family moves into their home after 1948. What could have been a heavy-handed political treatise instead becomes an achingly human story about two families trying to understand each other across an impossible divide. Tolan follows both families' children as they grow up, meet as adults, and attempt to bridge the gap between their narratives. It's a masterclass in showing how the biggest political conflicts play out in the smallest, most personal spaces.

5. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

Yes, it's a graphic memoir, but it's also one of the best travel books about Iran you'll ever read—even though most of it takes place in one city. Satrapi shows us Tehran through the eyes of a girl growing up during the Islamic Revolution, and later through her experiences as a young woman trying to find herself in Vienna and back home again. The genius of Persepolis is how it makes the political deeply personal. Revolution isn't abstract policy—it's your parents whispering late at night, it's having to change how you dress, it's the small daily negotiations between who you are and who you're supposed to be.

Why These Books Matter

What unites all these works is their refusal to reduce complex places to simple narratives. They don't ignore conflict or hardship—that would be dishonest. But they also don't let that be the only story. They remind us that everywhere in the world, people are falling in love, raising children, arguing with their mothers, dreaming about the future, making terrible jokes, and finding ways to laugh even when everything seems impossible. These are the stories that help us understand each other as humans first. In our current moment, when it's easy to see only the divisions and the violence, these books offer something precious: nuance, empathy, and the recognition that every headline represents thousands of individual human stories worth knowing. So next time you're planning your reading list, consider taking a journey through someone else's daily reality. You might just find that the distance between your life and theirs is smaller than you imagined.

Beyond the Headlines: 5 Travel Books That Show Real Life in the Middle East

The Story Behind Japan's Extraordinary 1954 Travel Guide

This particular book, published in 1956 by the Japan Travel Bureau, tells

One of the reasons I love old book stores is to think through the history of how each book ultimately came to be published. I was lucky enough to find a weathered volume of "Japan: The Official Guide" tucked away in a corner for sale at the Parnassus Book Service in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, that really peaked my interest. This particular book published in 1954 by the Japan Travel Bureau tells an extraordinary story. At over 850 pages thick and featuring more than 60 meticulously detailed fold-out maps, this wasn't just a guidebook—it was a declaration of hope, an act of profound courage, and perhaps most importantly, an invitation extended to a world that had every reason to turn away.

The Weight of History

To understand the significance of this guide, we must first consider the Japan of 1954. The country was emerging from the ashes of defeat, occupation, and international isolation. The atomic bombs had fallen on Hiroshima and Nagasaki just eleven years earlier. American occupation had only ended in 1952. Much of the nation's infrastructure lay in ruins, and Japan's reputation on the world stage remained deeply scarred by the events of the war. Yet someone at the Japan Travel Bureau looked at this devastated landscape and made an extraordinary decision: they would create the most detailed, most welcoming travel guide the world had ever seen. They would open Japan's doors not with hesitation or apology, but with unprecedented thoroughness and genuine enthusiasm.

The sheer ambition of "Japan: The Official Guide" is breathtaking when viewed in historical context, with extraordinary detail not only on the major cities and famous temples, but also on every worthwhile destination across all four main islands. Those 60-plus fold-out maps required painstaking cartographic work, often of areas that had been recently rebuilt or were still under reconstruction. This was more than tourism promotion—it was an act of faith in Japan's future. The guide's creators were betting that the world would want to visit Japan, that foreign travelers would be curious about Japanese culture, and that the country could transform itself from a pariah nation into a destination people would actively seek out.

Imagine the teams of writers, cartographers, photographers, and researchers who brought this guide to life. Many of them had lived through the war, perhaps lost family members, certainly witnessed their cities reduced to rubble. Yet here they were, methodically documenting hot springs in remote mountain villages, mapping out temple visits, describing the subtle differences between regional cuisines.

These weren't government propagandists trying to whitewash history. The Japan Travel Bureau was genuinely attempting to share what they loved about their country with complete strangers. Every fold-out map represented hours of surveying and drafting. Every restaurant recommendation came from personal experience. Every cultural explanation had to bridge vast differences in customs and expectations.

A Window Into a Transforming Nation

The 1954 guide captures Japan at a pivotal moment—no longer the militaristic empire of the 1930s and 40s, but not yet the economic powerhouse it would become in the following decades. It documents a nation rediscovering its identity, deciding which traditions to preserve and which to evolve, all while extending a hand to the international community. The guide's very existence suggests remarkable optimism about human nature. Its creators believed that if they could just show the world the Japan they knew—the one with sublime gardens, profound spiritual traditions, and warm hospitality—visitors would be able to see past the recent darkness to appreciate the culture's deeper beauty.

"Japan: The Official Guide" was part of Japan's broader effort to reestablish itself as a welcoming destination and demonstrate the nation's commitment to international engagement. Those 850 pages and 60 fold-out maps contributed to laying groundwork for what would eventually become Japan's thriving modern tourism industry, which today welcomes millions of visitors annually. But perhaps more importantly, the guide represented something profound about human resilience and hope.

The Story Behind Japan's Extraordinary 1954 Travel Guide

Around the World in Five Books: Exploring Cultural Diversity Through Travel

Travel opens doors to new worlds, new people, and new perspectives.
Travel opens doors to new worlds, new people, and new perspectives. But sometimes the most transformative journeys don’t involve passports or airports—they happen when we lose ourselves in a great book. Travel writing can transport us to places we’ve never been, giving us a front-row seat to cultural traditions, histories, and everyday moments that shape life in every corner of the globe. If you’re ready to celebrate cultural diversity through stories, here are a few recommendations.

1. From Heaven Lake: Travels Through Sinkiang and Tibet by Vikram Seth

Before he became a celebrated novelist, Seth was a student in China who decided—on a whim—to hitchhike back to India. This book chronicles that journey through remote regions of western China and Tibet, capturing encounters with monks, shepherds, and fellow wanderers. It’s an intimate look at cultural crossroads where tradition and change meet.

2. In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin

Chatwin’s classic still earns its place on any travel bookshelf. His wandering through the rugged landscapes of Patagonia mixes history, myth, and unforgettable characters. What makes it stand out is how he weaves personal curiosity with the stories of people who have shaped—and been shaped by—this faraway land.

3. The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton

Rather than telling the story of one trip, de Botton takes us into the “why” of travel. With wit and wisdom, he reflects on how journeys—whether across the globe or to the corner café—change how we see beauty, culture, and ourselves. It’s a book that makes you rethink the meaning of exploration.

4. Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Cape Town by Paul Theroux

In this adventurous journey, Theroux travels the length of Africa, mostly by bus, train, and truck. Along the way, he meets teachers, aid workers, villagers, and travelers, painting a vivid (and sometimes challenging) portrait of the continent’s diversity. His observations remind us of the complexity and richness of African cultures, beyond the headlines.

5. Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan by Jamie Zeppa

Zeppa’s memoir of moving to Bhutan as a teacher is both heartfelt and eye-opening. What begins as culture shock transforms into deep appreciation as she immerses herself in Bhutanese traditions, values, and ways of life. It’s a story about how living in a new culture can reshape not just what we know, but who we are.

Final Thoughts

Each of these books shows that travel isn’t just about where you go—it’s about how you see, and who you meet along the way. Whether it’s a hitchhiker’s road through Tibet, a cross-continental trek through Africa or a quiet reflection on beauty in one’s hometown, these stories celebrate the endless diversity of our world. Reading travel literature is more than armchair exploration—it’s practice for empathy. It invites us to step into someone else’s shoes, to notice the rhythms of daily life in unfamiliar places, and to connect with voices we might never otherwise encounter. And when we do finally pack our bags, those stories remind us to travel not just as tourists, but as learners, listeners, and guests. In a world that sometimes feels divided, both reading and traveling keep us curious and connected. They remind us that while cultures differ in language, food, traditions, and values, we’re all part of the same human story.

Around the World in Five Books: Exploring Cultural Diversity Through Travel

Six Recommended Books to Inspire A Road Trip

Discover our blog featuring some great books on road trips.
Remember the days when planning a trip meant lugging around a thick guidebook? Those dog-eared pages filled with maps, hotel recommendations, and must-see sights were once a traveler's best friend. My Let’s Go Europe from 1989, pictured, is still my favorite travel souvenir. But in recent years, the trusty guidebook has faced stiff competition from a formidable opponent: the smartphone in your pocket.

I put the guidebook versus mobile phone question to the test on a recent trip to Japan. Quite honestly, I wasn't very satisfied with either option. My guidebooks didn't provide enough of the local insights and useful practical information that I expect, while the content I accessed on my phone often seemed biased and limited. The constant barrage of advertisements made it just too difficult. I found a couple good suggestions from a few blogs, but the only clear winners were Google Maps for navigation and a translation app for communication. But for comprehensive travel guidance? We're still lacking a truly great and trustworthy product that combines the depth of traditional guidebooks with the convenience and real-time updates of digital platforms.

The travel guidebook industry has been on a rollercoaster ride over the past decade. Sales of print guidebooks plummeted in the early 2010s as travelers increasingly turned to digital alternatives. Lonely Planet, one of the biggest names in the business, saw its revenue drop dramatically, leading to layoffs and restructuring. But print guidebooks have shown surprising resilience, with sales finally beginning to stabilize. Bottom line is there are pros and cons to both. Smartphones and travel apps offer convenience, they also have limitations. Battery life, data costs, and unreliable Wi-Fi can all throw a wrench in digital-only travel plans. Plus, there's something to be said (at least for me personally) for the tactile experience of flipping through a physical book. Rick Steves, the popular travel writer and TV personality, puts it this way: "A guidebook is $25 worth of information in a time-tested format. It's always there for you – no connectivity required."

To stay relevant, guidebook publishers need to evolve. Here's my recommendation!

Keep investing in crafting the unique, local, and hard-to-find content that is why travelers like me often fall in love with a great travel guidebook. Your dedication to authentic and detailed information enriches the travel experience in ways that just cannot be replicated by fleeting online reviews or algorithms.

Improve the physical design to make your books more portable, durable, and user-friendly. We personally love the size and cover quality of the DK Eyewitness guides. And here's a personal wish. Please, publishers, consider increasing the font size! Many travelers (like me) would appreciate more readable text, especially in low-light conditions or after a long day of sightseeing.

Update more frequently to ensure information stays current in a rapidly changing world. This must be challenging financially of course, but it is hard to even think about a travel guidebook that is more than a year or two old.

Enhance visual content to keep improving the quality of maps and infographics that add value beyond text. A great map showing travel highlights and walking distances is indispensable, and so much easier to read in a good book.

Embrace digital integration to develop ways to seamlessly blend print guidebooks with digital content, such as companion apps or online resources that complement and enhance the physical book experience.

Artificial intelligence isn't just coming to travel planning – it's already here, and it will in my opinion revolutionize the industry. In the very near future, we will see AI-powered travel guide apps that combine the best of traditional guidebooks with cutting-edge technology. These apps will create personalized itineraries, offer real-time language translation, and provide hyper-local recommendations based on a traveler's preferences and behavior. Imagine a digital travel companion that offers location-specific guidance, updating in real-time as you move through a city or region. It will alert you to nearby points of interest, provide current opening hours or ticket prices, and even suggest detours based on local events or weather conditions.

This isn't just speculation – it's an inevitability. And it presents an enormous opportunity for traditional guidebook publishers who have built their reputations on creating and providing truly helpful, unbiased content. These established brands truly have a chance to lead the way in this new era of AI-assisted travel guidance. Lonely Planet, are you listening? Your wealth of curated content and travel expertise, combined with AI capabilities, could create an unparalleled travel resource. The race is on to develop the ultimate AI travel guide, and traditional publishers have a head start – if they're willing to embrace the technology.

So, are travel guidebooks dead? Far from it, and I certainly hope not. In a world of information overload and too many of us spending too much time looking at a screen, there's still some amazing value in expert curation, thoughtful storytelling, and a beautiful physical book. Would love to hear your comments!

The Rise and Fall and Future of Travel Guidebooks

Discover Jimbocho: Tokyo's Tsundoku Heaven

Jimbocho, located in Tokyo's Chiyoda ward, is renowned as the city's "Book

Nestled in the heart of Tokyo lies a book lover's dream come true—Jimbocho. This remarkable neighborhood, often overlooked by first-time visitors, is home to more than 170 bookstores, making it the largest used-book district in Japan and one of the world's great literary destinations. I was lucky enough to spend a day wandering its streets during a recent trip to Japan, and it quickly became one of my favorite experiences in Tokyo. For anyone who believes the best way to understand a place is through its stories, Jimbocho is an unforgettable place to explore.

It's also the perfect place to indulge in tsundoku (積ん読), the Japanese art of buying books and letting them pile up unread—a temptation that's surprisingly difficult to resist here. As you wander Jimbocho's narrow streets, you'll discover towering shelves of books around every corner. Most are, of course, in Japanese, but many shops specialize in particular subjects or foreign-language titles. Whether you're searching for a rare travel guide, an antique map, or simply hoping to soak in the atmosphere, every bookstore offers something different.

One of the joys of Jimbocho is that no two bookstores feel alike. Here are a few that deserve a place on your itinerary.

Ohya Shobo

Founded in 1882, Ohya Shobo specializes in Japanese literature, history, and rare scholarly works. The traditional wooden interior feels wonderfully timeless, making it easy to imagine generations of readers browsing these same shelves. This was one of the highlights of my visit to Japan, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who loves books.

Isseido Booksellers

Established in 1903, Isseido is a paradise for collectors, with an extraordinary collection of rare and antique books. I especially loved browsing the vintage travel books, beautifully illustrated atlases, and leather-bound classics. Even if you leave empty-handed, the atmosphere alone makes the visit worthwhile.

Kitazawa Bookstore

Japan's oldest foreign-language bookstore, founded in 1902, remains one of the best places in Tokyo to browse English-language titles. Its shelves are filled with everything from literature to academic works, making it an enjoyable stop whether you're searching for a specific book or simply exploring.

Sanseido Main Store

While most of Jimbocho is known for its used bookstores, Sanseido offers six floors of new releases, art books, magazines, and gifts. Be sure to stop by the café before continuing your literary adventure through the neighborhood.

Book Town Jinbocho

If you'd like to browse several booksellers without walking too far, Book Town Jinbocho brings multiple bookstores together under one roof, making it an easy introduction to the neighborhood's remarkable variety.

More Than Just Bookstores

As wonderful as the bookstores are, Jimbocho's charm extends well beyond its shelves. Much of the joy comes from wandering without a plan, discovering cafés, vintage shops, and quiet corners that make the neighborhood feel distinctly its own.

Vintage Shops

Between the bookstores you'll find vintage camera shops, record stores, antique prints, and specialty retailers. I particularly enjoyed browsing Sheeplus for vintage cameras, while Coconuts Disk is a must for anyone who loves vinyl.

Cozy Cafés

Every great bookstore neighborhood deserves equally memorable cafés, and Jimbocho has plenty of them. Sabouru has been serving coffee since 1955 and is worth visiting for its wonderfully nostalgic atmosphere, while Curry Bondy became one of my favorite lunches in Tokyo.

Kanda Myojin Shrine

Just a short walk away is Kanda Myojin Shrine, one of Tokyo's oldest Shinto shrines. I unfortunately ran out of time on this visit, which simply gives me one more reason to return.

A Neighborhood of Learning

The area's proximity to several universities gives Jimbocho an unmistakably intellectual atmosphere. If you have time, the observation deck at Meiji University's Liberty Tower offers sweeping views across Tokyo.

Specialty Shops

Beyond the bookstores, don't miss Komiyama Tokyo for its outstanding collection of art books and vintage photography, or Tsunehiro Uno Shoten if antique maps and historic prints capture your imagination.

Visit During the Festival

If you're visiting in late October or early November, try to coincide your trip with the Kanda Used Book Festival, when the streets fill with additional book stalls, literary events, and readers from across Japan.

Practical Tips

Most bookstores open around 10:00 or 11:00 a.m. and close in the early evening.

Carry some cash, as smaller shops may not accept credit cards.

Look for the sign 洋書 (yōsho) if you're searching for foreign-language books.

Give yourself at least half a day. Jimbocho is the kind of neighborhood that's best enjoyed slowly.

Final Thoughts

Jimbocho is far more than a shopping district. It's a neighborhood built around curiosity, learning, and the simple pleasure of wandering. Every bookstore reflects a different corner of Japan's literary culture, while together they create one of the world's great destinations for readers.

Whether you leave carrying a rare first edition, an old travel guide, or simply memories of an afternoon spent exploring, Jimbocho offers something increasingly rare: the chance to slow down, follow your curiosity, and experience Tokyo through its stories. For anyone who loves travel and books, it's a place you'll never forget.

Discover Jimbocho: Tokyo's Tsundoku Heaven

The Best Books That Capture the Magic of Train Travel

This blog showcases books that celebrate the enchantment of train travel,

There's something inherently romantic about train journeys. The rhythmic clacking of wheels on tracks, ever-changing landscapes rolling by, the people-watching potential, and the promise of adventure around every bend. These six books don't just describe rail travel - they transport you, inviting you to feel the sway of the carriage and hear the whistle of the locomotive as you turn each page.

The Great Railway Bazaar by Paul Theroux

Theroux's classic travelogue takes readers on an epic four-month journey from London to Tokyo and back. With wit and keen observation, he paints vivid portraits of fellow travelers and distant lands, all while celebrating the unique perspective that train travel provides. Theroux's love affair with rail travel didn't end here. He went on to pen several other notable train-centric travelogues, including The Old Patagonian Express, chronicling his journey from Boston to Argentina by rail, and Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, which retraces his original The Great Railway Bazaar route thirty years later.

Around the World in 80 Trains by Monisha Rajesh

Rajesh's modern take on Jules Verne's classic sees her circumnavigating the globe by rail. From luxury carriages to crowded commuter trains, she offers a fresh perspective on train travel in the 21st century, proving that the romance of the rails is alive and well.

The Trans-Siberian Handbook by Bryn Thomas

For those dreaming of conquering the world's longest railway journey, Thomas's guide is indispensable. Packed with practical advice and colorful anecdotes, it's both a useful planning tool and an inspiring read that brings the Trans-Siberian experience to life.

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

This classic mystery novel unfolds entirely aboard the luxurious Orient Express. Christie's masterful plotting and vivid descriptions not only deliver a gripping whodunit but also capture the golden age of train travel. The confined space of the train carriage adds to the tension and intrigue, making the journey as central to the story as the characters themselves.

Night Train to Lisbon by Pascal Mercier

This philosophical novel follows a teacher who impulsively boards a night train to Lisbon, embarking on a journey of self-discovery. Mercier's work reminds us that sometimes the most important trips are those that lead us to ourselves.

Lonely Planet's Amazing Train Journeys

This comprehensive guide covers 60 of the world's greatest and most memorable train journeys, from classic long-distance trips like Canada's Rocky Mountaineer and Darwin to Adelaide's The Ghan, to little-known gems on regular commuting lines. It's a visual feast packed with practical information, inspiring you to leave the car behind and explore the world on rails.

These books capture the essence of what makes rail travel so special. They inspire us to slow down, to embrace the journey as much as the destination, and to see the world from a different angle. So pick up one of these titles, and let your mind wander down the tracks to your next adventure.

The Best Books That Capture the Magic of Train Travel

Discover Morocco: Must-Read Books

Here find our recommendations on books that offer rich insights into
