I spoke to various artisans, locals, and shopkeepers, and found that everyone had a story to tell. A story of how they came to Santa Fe. Perhaps they arrived in the ‘60’s in a VW microbus, or via a cross-country bicycle trip, or just fell in love with it when visiting one of the local ancient cliff dwellings.

Santa Fe can inspire creative aspirations in little ones. It’s for the future artisan and the budding adventurer. Santa Fe is a beautiful blend of pueblo revival architecture, a mix of the Native American and early Spanish influence amidst a vibrant green and brown high desert landscape. It was founded in 1607 and was once the capital of Spain’s and Mexico’s territories north of the Rio Grande. Santa Fe is home to the third largest art market in the United States. It also has the benefit of being an extremely walkable city.

Inspire the Artisan

Taking a stroll down Canyon Road is like taking a stroll through an art gallery. There are nearly 240 galleries located in Santa Fe. All manner of sculpture and art with varying styles from Southwest to contemporary modern can be seen from the road. Even if you’ve got toddlers that you don’t want to take into the galleries, there is plenty of colorful outdoor whimsy to keep short attention spans at bay.

What not to miss: Giant horse head sculpture

The Georgia O’Keefe Museum is the only museum in the United States that is dedicated to an internationally-known female artist. The museum showcases O’Keefe’s paintings, drawings, and sculptures. As art museums go, it is accessible and kid friendly. O’Keefe’s art runs the gamut from her trademark large paintings of flowers, to abstractions, and landscapes. The museum regularly houses new exhibitions such as the current, “Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: The Hawai’i Pictures.” Volunteer docents are on-hand to give in-depth tours, though if you’ve got kids in tow, know that they can potentially run 1.5 hours.

What not to miss: Discovery guides and sketchbooks that your kids can carry around the museum. Check the website for youth and family programs such as “Dramatic Play and Art” and early openings just for families with children.

If you’ve got kids who are budding photographers, photographic opportunities abound in Santa Fe. Popular spots include the Loretto Chapel with it’s miraculous free standing staircase, the nearby San Miguel Mission (1610) which is the oldest church in the U.S., and the various galleries along Canyon Road. The 1800’s era St. Francis Cathedral is hard to miss at the end of Cathedral Place and is filled with beautiful stained glass.

Meet a craftsperson

Walk the downtown Santa Fe plaza, a traditional Spanish-American colonial town center. Surrounded by boutiques, shops, and galleries, you’ll find locals and tourists alike milling about the town’s central green space.

The Native American Vendors Program is the place to stroll through to find one of a kind handmade wares made and sold directly by Native American artists. Located in the portal of the Palace of the Governors (1610), the building is the oldest continuously occupied structure in the United States. It is adjacent to the plaza and the New Mexico History Museum.

Looking for something that is heirloom quality? Check out the John Rippel U.S.A. shop just off the main plaza on Old Santa Fe Trail. The shop sells hand-engraved and hammered sterling belt buckles made by John himself, as well as unique jewelry such as the reversible flip ring crafted by local artisans such as Gloria Sawin.

What not to miss: Stop and take the time to have a conversation with the local artisans. Get a sense of place and learn about their craft.

Stoke your sense of adventure

Got kids with a sense of adventure and a love for the outdoors? Santa Fe has a myriad of outdoor activities for the hiker, skier, mountain biker, fisherman, or white water rafter. Start with a walk along the river, or walk up to the Cross of the Martyrs to get an expansive view of the city. If you want to head further afield, Bandelier National Monument is about an hour outside town and has a number of cliff dwellings that are fun for kids to explore. One highlight of my trip was the off road adventure in the six-wheeled Pinzgauer vehicle along the old Route 66. The Pinzgauer is a unique all-terrain vehicle which is named after an Austrian breed of horse.

The views of the high desert are expansive and stunningly beautiful. You’ll get a chance to marvel at the old unpaved route 66, the remains of the original El Camino Real, and various petroglyphs from the early inhabitants of the area.

The friendly and knowledgeable owners and guides Georges and Sue make the trip engaging and educational. You’ll learn about the different periods of history, including the Native American and Spanish cultures.

Play and learn

Kids need play and exploration time. The Santa Fe Children’s Museum is an engaging place and a great stop to do something that is entirely kid-centric. Do your kids like creepy crawlie bugs? The vast insect collection is remarkable. Let them play in the huge outdoor sand pit, build some creations at the LEGO station, play with magnets, splash at the water area, all while having fun learning about science via the interactive exhibits. Located one mile south of the Plaza.

Eat well

Santa Fe has plenty of family-friendly restaurants, many with outdoor seating. First on your list should be the casual Cowgirl BBQ Santa Fe. Why? It’s got “The Mother of All Green Chile Burgers,” a great selection of craft beer, AND an outdoor playspace for the kids! The menu has a wide variety of items, including some vegetarian options.

For a quick, fun, and not so healthy lunch, check out the Five and Dime at the edge of the plaza. It may look like a general store, but head to the back and it’s got a snack bar that sells frito pies. What’s a frito pie you ask? Hot steaming chili and cheese thrown into a fritos chip bag! Anthony Bourdain ate it, and so did I.

Looking for a romantic dinner or a fantastic breakfast? Check out Luminaria, located at the Inn and Spa at Loretto. The patio and veranda also lend a great outdoors atmosphere on warm nights. I recommend trying the blue corn pancakes with piñon syrup. Luminaria is a Conde’ Nast Traveler’s 2012 World’s Best, Gold List award recipient.

Sleep soundly

Santa Fe has a wide variety of accommodations. The Inn and Spa at Loretto is a solid choice. Stay near the plaza in this distinctive pueblo revival style hotel modeled after the Taos Pueblo. This posh inn and spa is within walking distance to all of downtown, next to the historic Loretto Chapel, and made it on Travel + Leisure’s 500 World’s Best list. There is a refreshing outdoor pool, and some of the rooms have balconies, which offer views of the city and the sunrise. The spa is top notch, having earned a Reader’s Choice award from Conde Nast Traveler.

What not to miss: The miraculous steps at the adjacent Loretto Chapel. The blue corn pancakes with piñon syrup for breakfast at Luminaria restaurant.

Tip: If you’ve got light sleepers (kids or adults), request a room on the side opposite from the cathedral, as the bells can tend to ring loudly.

Traveling to Santa Fe

Santa Fe is easily accessible via plane, train, or automobile. The Santa Fe Municipal Airport is accessible via flights from Dallas, Denver, and Los Angeles via American Eagle and United Airlines. Another option for the multi-modal traveler would be to fly into Albuquerque and take the one hour drive. Better yet, skip the car and grab a ride on the New Mexico Rail Runner train, which runs 7 days a week between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Banff to Jasper Driver Stop 2: Lake Louise

Only a 40-minute drive from Banff lies Lake Louise. The small community named after the lake that made it famous is definitely worth visiting. Lake Louise itself is a turquoise-colored lake that sits at 5,740 feet above sea level.

In the background of this iconic scene, the Victoria Glacier can be seen year-round. Lake Louise is home to adventure year-round. In summer, rent a canoe to explore the lake or hike to the Lake Agnes Tea House.

Families with experience hiking may want to continue on to Little Beehive, a trail with incredible views. In winter, hit the hills at the Lake Louise Ski Resort.

Banff to Jasper Drive Stop 3: The Icefields Parkway to Saskatchewan River Crossing

Be sure to watch for animals as bears, goats, wolves, coyotes, elk, and deer are often seen along the Banff to Jasper drive. On this portion of the highway, you’ll want to have a camera ready as each turn leads to another incredible mountain view. 

Along the Icefields Parkway, there are numerous signs marking hikes and viewpoints. Keep an eye out for the sign to Bow Summit Lookout.

This stop is best known for its view of Peyto Lake. In summer, Peyto Lake is a unique bright turquoise color. Some visitors also remark that the lake is shaped like a dog. Peyto is one of Canada’s most photographed lakes due to its sheer beauty.

Once you continue on the Banff to Jasper drive, keep an eye out for Parker Ridge. This 2.7 km hike (5.4km roundtrip) leads you to a viewpoint of the Saskatchewan Glacier. This hike is easy for families. 

Once you arrive at Saskatchewan River Crossing, turn onto Highway 11 to access some lesser-known hikes. Families particularly love hiking to Siffleur Falls. Here, families can explore an easy and wide trail that features a suspension bridge and a boardwalk leading to an incredible gorge and three waterfalls.

Banff to Jasper Drive Stop 4: Columbia Icefield & Athabasca Glacier

The Columbia Icefield is one of the largest non-polar ice fields in the world. The Icefield feeds six major glaciers, one of which, the Athabasca Glacier is accessible from the Icefields Parkway.

The Columbia Icefield lies atop of a triple Continental Divide meaning its waters flow to the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Hudson Bay. As you approach the Columbia Icefield and Athabasca Glacier, the scenery along the Banff to Jasper drive turns from stunning to out of this world. 

While the drives between stops on the Icefields Parkway are short, they can take much longer than expected as mountain goats wander on the highway and visitors stop numerous times to take in the views. When planning to visit the Athabasca Glacier, you will want to schedule at least 3-4 hours.

The easiest and safest way to experience the glacier is by embarking on the Columbia Icefields Adventure. The tour offered by Pursuit allows guests to board an Ice Explorer that takes you across a sheet of ice.

Guests are allowed to disembark to explore the glacier and fill water bottles with glacier water. After the tour, guests are whisked to the Skywalk, a glass walkway that stands 918 feet above the Sunwapta Valley. Advance bookings are required for both these experiences. 

Where to Stay Near the Athabasca Glacier

Glacier View Lodge – In previous years, the Athabasca Glacier was a day trip from Banff and Jasper. Now with the opening of the Glacier View Lodge, guests can sleep in a Dark Sky Preserve with a view of the glacier. Banff to Jasper Drive Stop 5: Athabasca Glacier to Sunwapta Falls

The upper falls are visible from the road. Families will love exploring the short trail through the forest to the lower falls. These falls are formed by a change of flow in the Sunwapta River that has carved a beautiful gorge. The roar of falls can be heard throughout the hike.

Banff to Jasper Drive Final Stop: Jasper National Park

In summer, kids love riding the Jasper Skytram to the top of Whistlers Mountain. Look for marmots on the top of the mountain whose whistling gave Whistlers Mountain its name.

At the Tower of London, you can introduce your teens to 1,000 years of history and experience the Crown Jewels, the most powerful symbols of the British Monarchy.

Tell them the story of Henry VIII at Hampton Court Palace. Then explore the birthplace of Queen Victoria at Kensington Palace. Other London royal palaces to visit include Kew Palace, Banqueting House, and Hillsborough Castle.

2. Do Everything Double-Decker

Riding a double decker bus is a quintessential London experience. Nearly the entire city fleet of city buses are double deckers, so riding one is as easy as a tap of your credit card.

The London Eye River Cruise is equally as exciting but it comes with a bonafide tour guide. From each ride, your teens will spot world famous London attractions such as Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, The London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Shard, and Tower Bridge.

7. Take Your Teens to A Show in the West End

It’s really fun to catch a show in the West End. It’s Broadway but not quite Broadway, and the plays and musicals are as impressive as it gets. Often shows go to London before Broadway, so it’s a good way for your teens to get in on the action.

9. Take a Walk Through Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath is a large, ancient London park, covering 320 hectares. Running from Hampstead to Highgate, it’s one of the highest points in London, and it makes for a great afternoon stroll with your teens. The park is accessible by Tube and offers beautiful views of the city that you won’t get anywhere else.

10. Explore the Neighborhood of Shoreditch

Shoreditch is a wonderful trendy neighborhood in East London. It’s artsy and is full of many lovely restaurants and shops.

11. Take in a Production at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is located in Southwark. It’s a modern reconstruction of the original Globe that was built in 1599. You can get tickets to see a Shakespeare production practically every day. So go ahead and introduce your teens to Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream or Romeo and Juliet. Tickets start at just $5!!

Teens will enjoy Instagramming and posing in front of the Clock Tower at the Palace of Westminster, which is probably the most famous clock in the world. Westminster Abbey, formally titled the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter at Westminster, is a large mainly Gothic abbey church just to the west of the Palace of Westminster.

Better known today as the Houses of Parliament, the Palace of Westminster is the oldest royal palace in London. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as one of the most recognized buildings in the world.

14. Discover the Magic of Abbey Road Studios

Abbey Road Studios is where the Beatles recorded their albums. It is still being used as a recording studio today.

Music-loving teens will appreciate taking photos outside the studio and walking across the famous Abbey Road zebra crosswalk.

15. Wander Through Chinatown

From bubble tea to red bean rolls, dumplings, and more, teens will find delicious food in London’s Chinatown by just wandering the streets. There are more than 70 restaurants packed into a tiny collection of streets, with cuisines ranging from Malaysian to Middle Eastern, but most are Chinese.

16. Go Shopping on Oxford Street

Teen girls love shopping on Oxford Street in the middle of London. Its stores have a tremendous range, and your kids will be sure to find their favorite shops along the road.

Many of the stores are flagship locations, such as Topshop, so they are big and well-stocked. Other girl teen faves include Uniqlo, Urban Outfitters, Primark, Lush, and H&M.

Teen boys will gravitate toward the new Microsoft store and sporty stores such as Nike Town and Adidas. There are also souvenir stores and department stores, such as Selfridges, John Lewis, House of Fraser, Debenhams, and Marks & Spencer. In addition, most of these stores have food halls with whole floors dedicated to specialty foods and sweets.

17. Spend Time at Madame Tussauds London

Teens will love a visit to Madame Tussauds London where they can scout out lifelike replicas of 250 famous Brits made out of wax. The London location is the original location of Madame Tussauds, so it is a special place.

Which Brits will your teens be able to identify? There’s Elton John, David Beckham, Sir Lawrence Olivier, and, of course, the Royals. There is also a movie, Alien: Escape, Marvel Superheroes 4D. Be sure to book online in advance to save money on the cost of admission.

18. Explore Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is dedicated to the memory of the London 2012 Olympics, one of the most exciting events ever to take place in the history of London.

Teens will enjoy reliving the popular event with its adventure playground, Timber Lodge, and the amazing ArcelorMittal Orbit with views of the park and the rest of London. Your teens can even swim in the London Aquatics Centre.

19. Take Time Out in Hyde Park

Hyde Park covers over 600 acres in central London. Active teens will like taking a break and taking in a bike ride, stroll, or renting bikes on the lakes. Or they may want to chill and spend some time lying on the grass after a day of touring, checking out their phones.

If you’re at Hyde Park on a Sunday, be sure to go to Speaker’s Corner for public speeches and debates by random British citizens taking on random subjects. It will surely be an experience your teens won’t forget anytime soon.

20. Have a Fright at London Dungeon

Horror-loving teens will love reliving the city’s past at the London Dungeon, located on the South Bank. London Dungeon features 19 different live shows and two thrilling rides that recreate historical events and is one of the best things to do in London with teens.

21. Tour Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

If your teen is (or once was) a fan of the Harry Potter series, then the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London is an absolute must! The tour is located just 20 minutes outside of London in Leavesden. Buses are available from the city center. 

The tour offers an inside look at at all of the Harry Potter films in the franchise. Your teens will be able to tour the sets of Hogwarts, Dumbledore’s office, the Great Hall, Diagon Alley, and more!

22. Have High Tea at the Dukes Hotel or The Sanderson

The Dukes Hotel is a quiet, unassuming, and completely traditional hotel that’s close to Piccadilly and West End. It’s also the perfect place to indulge in your family’s tea and cake obsession.

High tea includes various English teas, chocolate cupcakes, plain scones, cheese & jelly sandwiches, and other English delicacies.

23. Hit the Tate Modern for a Dose of Art and Take a Stroll Down Southbank

The Tate Modern is located in the heart of Southbank. This modern art museum is free (as are most of the museums in London, a definite perk of visiting the city!) and offers peeks at modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali.

Located right on the River Thames, Southbank is a cultural center that houses the Royal Festival Hall, Hayward Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall and more.

It’s also a beautiful walkway on the river with restaurants, buskers and a lot to see on a stroll. The views of London across the way are stunning and it also holds much in the way of Instagram possibilities for your teens.

24. See the Changing of the Guard

Watching the changing of the guard is about as “touristy in London” as it gets, but it still is fun to watch! This event will be a true highlight for any teen visiting the city. It typically takes place in front of Buckingham Palace at 11:30am, every other day.

Check the palace website for up to date information. Arrive 30 minutes early to secure prime viewing.

25. Ride the Canals in Camden & Have Launch at Waterside Cafe

After a stroll through Camden Market’s unique stalls full of interesting fashion items and collectibles, jump on a boat operated by Regent’s Canal Waterbus which takes you for a ride through Camden Lock, Little Venice, and the London Zoo.

For about an hour, your can ride through the canals past interesting architecture, industrial history, wildlife, and scenery. 

Then have lunch at the quaint Waterside Café, a restaurant that sits on the water in a converted houseboat in nearby Little Venice.  They serve traditional British cuisine.

Customize a magnet for each member of your crew, with his or her name in Mickey ears, featuring Disney characters they love, or whatever floats their boat.

“My boys loved that they could easily find our stateroom by looking for their magnets,” said mom and regular Disney cruiser, Heather Mikulskis.

You may also want to have a special ship magnet made to commemorate your first sailing on that particular cruise ship. My family sailed on my husband’s birthday and during Halloween on the High Seas, so we had Disney cruise door magnets for those occasions. Check out these inspiring Halloween magnet ideas for bats, ghosts, and spookiness.

While I’d like to think I’m creative, I’m not super crafty. I relied on the experts at Etsy to help us bring awesome door decorations.

On Etsy and other creative sites, you’ll find many Mickey ear designs that you can customize with names of each family member, the year, name of the ship, destination, etc. You’ll also find magnets of other Disney characters, nautical elements like anchors, birthday, anniversary, and seasonal magnets.

In the photo above you can see the main Disney Cruise door magnets we ordered from CruiseDesignsBB, customized with our names and printed on magnetic paper. They came protected in photo envelopes and with a Disney Cruise countdown magnet to boot. How cute!

Peruse Pinterest and Facebook Groups for Disney Cruise Door Magnet Ideas

Whenever I need a little inspiration, Pinterest is a great place to go. “My wife, Julie, found our Disney magnet ideas on Pinterest,” says dad Nick Deka. “Once we started, it was easy. We used a plastic laminate covering. All the supplies were purchased at Hobby Lobby. My favorite was the big family lifesaver sign.”

There are Facebook groups out there for practically everything! Just search for “Disney Cruise door magnets” and voila- you’ll find all sorts of new friends willing to share ideas.

“I found our magnet templates on a Disney graphics Facebook page I stumbled across,” says mom Katey Rybski. “I downloaded them, customized with our family’s names, and printed them on magnet paper with our home laser printer.” Printing at home is a great way to save money.

Bring Interactive Magnets for the Inside of Your Stateroom

The inside of your stateroom door is magnetic too!

“Bring some fun magnets for the kids to play with on the inside of the door too,” suggests mom Heather Mikulskis.

Our stateroom had a dry erase magnetic board to write notes on or play tic-tac-toe. You could also bring character-shaped magnets for kids to play out scenes, magnetic pieces that spin and move, or even magnetic letters to spell out playful messages.

Pack Your Magnets Carefully

Because they’re precious, pack your creations carefully.

“You want to minimize creasing,” warns dad Nick Deka.

I packed my cruise door decorations in sturdy, cardboard envelopes with tissue around each to protect them. I also suggest putting your cruise door magnets in a zippered pocket of your luggage to keep them from jumbling around or getting crushed by other objects.

DIY Disney Cruise Door Magnets

Print Designs On Magnetic Paper

A simple way to make Disney cruise door magnets at home is to print the design on magnetic paper and cut them out. You can find all sorts of images online.

Print on the glossy side of the magnetic paper. Then cut out them out. If you have square edges, you can cut with scissors. Otherwise, use an X-Acto knife, for more precise curves and edges. Magnetic Paper can be found at craft stores or on Amazon.

Have the Kids Cut Construction Paper, then Laminate and Add Magnets

Let the kids get in on the action and watch their creative juices flow! Kids can cut shapes out from construction paper and decorate with markers.

“The kids did most of the work on our cruise door magnets,” says dad Nick Deka. “We then laminated the paper and stuck little magnets on back.”

You can also use self-adhesive lamination to make it even easier. Heather Mikulskis had her three boys each draw a design of their own. What a fun way to all add to the excitement for the upcoming family vacation! To make cutting shapes even easier, consider using stencils or even cookie cutters.

Cut Cloth or Crochet Designs, then Attach Magnets on Back

Grandparents and other family members can help make memorable magnets too. If you find a fun fabric with Disney characters, cut it out and put magnets on the back. Those who know how to crochet can make special shapes and designs sure to help your cabin door standout.

Think Outside of the Flat Design

When I asked Jimmy Lynett, cruise director on the Disney Dream, about Disney cruise door magnets, he said he loves the fun surprises and how they demonstrate the welcoming spirit of Disney. The best door decorations he ever saw involved a Mickey head silhouette assembled with Dum-Dum lollipops. It definitely made him want to walk by that cabin door a few more times than necessary.

The Best Things to do in Hawaii Big Island

Things to do on the Big Island are as varied as the island itself. Diversity reigns on the island of Hawaii, known to most mainlanders as “The Big Island.”

The youngest of the Hawaiian islands, Hawaii boasts 8 of the world’s 13 climate zones including arid deserts, tropical rainforests, and even polar tundra on the tops of its mountain peaks.

The island is a geological and ecological wonderland. It is bursting with unique flora and fauna, active volcanoes that add to the island’s landmass each day, and even the highest mountain peak in the world when measured from the sea floor.

Spend Lots of Time at the Beach

There are more than 260 miles of coastline to explore on the island of Hawaii. Thanks to the island’s young history, a significant portion of the island’s coast is covered in black lava rock, but there are still plenty of family-friendly places to hit the water.

Finding soft, powdery sand on the Big Island of Hawaii is just a matter of knowing where to go! We have a full guide to the best beaches on the Big Island. Below are a few of the highlights.

Magic Sands is a good spot in Kailua-Kona. It is a popular local place in the summer and there is good snorkeling as well. The beach earned its nickname because winter storms often consume the beach and the sand disappears. It is a good place to boogieboard when the swell is up.

Waikoloa Beach is the best spot to swim in Waikoloa Village. It is a nice beach with protected waters, and there is some snorkeling on the southern end of the beach. The beach is in front of the Waikoloa Beach Marriott.

Hapuna Beach is the largest of the island’s white sand beaches, next to the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort.  It offers consistently good conditions for swimming, body-boarding, sunbathing, strolling and snorkeling. The south end of the beach is the most protected area.

Mauna Kea Beach a perfect crescent shape and extends for almost a quarter mile. A natural rock reef provides some protection from the surf. There is usually good bodyboarding and swimming here unless the surf is too big. You can also see Mauna Kea Volcano from the beach if the sky is clear. The beach is in front of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel but all beaches are public in Hawaii.

If you are looking for black sand and sea turtles, check out Punalu’u Black Sand Beach on the south end of the island. This black sand doesn’t stick to your skin, making post beach cleanup a breeze. There is a small concession stand on the beach where you can grab snacks and rent snorkel equipment, but check water conditions before swimming.

If it is green sand you are after, head to the southernmost point in the United States at Papakolea Beach. The green is a dull olive shade formed by olivine present in the lava. The 2.5-mile trail that leads to the beach is beautiful but hot so arrive early if you want cooler temps and the beach (mostly) to yourselves.

Due to the vast amount of lava rock, low tide brings a wealth of tide pool exploration across the Big Island’s Shores. Here are our favorite tide pools on the Big Island for families.

Thanks to the western facing Kailua-Kona coast, there are plenty of opportunities for amazing sunset views while visiting Hawaii. We recommend seeing the views via hammock at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, or hiking to a striking mountain top view at Mauna Kea (or the Visitor Information Center halfway up the summit).

Numerous ocean-front restaurants and hotels along the western shore offer tables with stunning views. The Kona Inn (Restaurant) and Lava Lava Beach Club are among the favorites.

Go Snorkeling and See Sea Turtles

One of our favorite things to do when staying on the Big Island with kids is go snorkeling and spot sea turtles. Of all the Hawaiian Islands we have visited (and we have visited five), we have found the most sea turtles while vacationing on the Big Island.

The sea turtles seem to be attracted to the algae growing on the lava rock that hugs much of the Big Island coastline.

Snorkeling on the Big Island is a fun adventure where families can experience calm water in numerous bays, hundreds of brightly colored fish, stunning masses of coral, sea turtles galore, and even manta rays and eels!

Kahaluu is a shallow cove in Kailua-Kona that is full of fish and is a popular sea turtle hangout. Since most of the cove is only neck high and the waters are usually calm it is a great place for first timers snorkelers.

There is also a good snorkeling spot off the beach at Magic Sands that is better for more experienced snorkelers. The reef is about 100 yards offshore (flotation devices for safety with kids are suggested) and is filled with big fish!

Kiholo Bay is a great place to snorkel with sea turtles at a black sand beach. The walk is about 25 minutes to the beach from the park along the highway, but this special place is worth the effort.

Another highlight of this beach is the partially submerged lava tube that you are able to swim in. You can go back pretty far but you will need a flashlight because it is pitch black once get back in there.

Explore Hawaii on Foot (or ATV, or Mule)

The island of Hawaii boasts miles of trails that lead you into the back-country of this stunning island. Since roads that traverse the island are fairly limited, be mindful of trail distances before setting out, and be sure you have packed enough water for your adventure.

To explore the amazingly beautiful and secluded Waipi’o Valley, we suggest you take a mule, horse, or ATV guided tour as the climb back up the canyon is incredibly difficult and it is the steepest paved road in the US. You definitely don’t want to miss exploring this special places which is so stunning that it was once the former retreat of Hawaiian royalty.

Some of our favorite kid-friendly hikes include walking to the fish ponds at Honokohau Beach, trails within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (see below), and the Pololu Valley trails.

Take a Boat Tour off the Hawaii Coast

One of the great things to do on the Big Island with kids involves getting on top of the water. From sunset dinner cruises and dolphin excursions to parasailing, kayaking, taking off in an outrigger canoe or even venturing into the depths in a submarine, there is a boating experience for just about everyone.

The Atlantis Submarine Cruise is a family-friendly hit, especially for more cautious kids. It gets kids under the water without the requirement of masks, snorkels, and wildlife encounters.

If you are looking to try your luck at securing your own dinner, there are dozens of fishing charters to choose from. There are private charters that allow for up to six people and focus on catching mahi mahi, marlin, and tuna.

My family loved our Body Glove Dolphin & Snorkel Cruise. During this half-day excursion from Kailua-Kona, we saw dozens of dolphins swimming in our wake. We also snorkeled in a secluded bay we never could have reached on our own.

Another great option is the Hang Loose Boat Tour of Kealakekua Bay. It is one of the best places to snorkel on the island and gear and picnic lunch is provided. There are also great opportunities to spot dolphins on the way.

If you prefer to sail on a catamaran to your Kealakekua Bay snorkeling adventure, there are options for that as well.

For those who like to kayak, you will please to know there are great kayak and snorkel tours available on the Big Island as well.

Learn Something While Having Fun on a Farm Tour or Exploring Historic Hawaiian Sites

The Big Island is known for its agriculture. Farm tours are unique and fun things to do on the Big Island with kids.

See 125-year-old coffee trees, watch the roasting process, and sample varieties from local coffee plantations on a coffee plantation tour. At Kona Coffee Living History Farm, learn about the history of coffee-making at Greenwell Farms, see coffee trees, and sample coffee.

From macadamia nut plantations that feature walk-through tours to orchid farms boasting vanilla bean harvesting, the island is alive with produce and vegetation. The Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Mill is a good place to see macadamia processing in action, enjoy some refreshing macadamia nut ice cream, and buy some nuts at a discounted price.

If you are interested in beekeeping, you won’t want to miss this Honey Farm and Beekeeping Tour with Big Islands Bees. On this tour families go behind-the-scenes of a traditional honey farm and get an up-close look at the hives from a secure viewing are while meeting the beekeeper and learning about the honey-making process. And, of course, there are honey samples.

Trekaroo Tip: To explore a variety of farms without making the trek to see all of them, visit one of the island’s many farmers markets where local farmers showcase their fresh produce, coffee, nuts, honey, and artisan goods.

The history of the Hawaiian islands dates back much further than the state’s adoption into the United States in 1959. Throughout the Hawaiian Islands, visitors can get a sense of the native Hawaiian culture at various events, cultural exhibitions, and museums.

There are many educational things to do in on the Big Island with kids. Don’t miss a stop at the three national historic parks scattered throughout the western shore of the island.

You can complete the hands-on Junior Ranger program at all these national park sites. The program gets kids involved and helps make learning more approachable.

Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site is an easy drive 20 minutes north of Waikaloa Village and protects the ruins of the temple of King Kamehameha built around 1790.

Not far from Kailua-Kona, the Kaloko Honokohau National Historic Park is the site of ancient Hawaiian fish ponds. It is also an extremely popular place for sea turtles to hang out. We saw at least a half a dozen feeding on algae covering the shoreline rocks.

Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park is a nice place to learn about the traditional Hawaiian lifestyle and culture. Ancient temples and ki’i (wooden images) help tell the stories of Hawaii’s past. The park is also adjacent to a really popular snorkeling site with lots of turtles and fish.

Ready for the royal treatment? Visit the Hulhe’e Palace in downtown Kailua-Kona.

Make Friends with the Local Animals

There are many things to do on the Big Island if you are an animal lover. Top animal attractions on the island include Dolphin Quest at Hilton Waikoloa Village and the unique Seahorse Farm right next to the airport in Kailua-Kona.

The Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo is a great (and free!) option while visiting Hilo on the east side of the island. It is a tropical zoo with monkeys, Hawaiian Nene geese, and even tigers!

One of the most memorable experiences is taking a tour which allows you to snorkel with the manta rays. If you aren’t up for snorkeling, don’t miss the chance to see massive manta rays most nights outside of the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa at Rays on the Bay. Water timid travelers will be happy knowing they can check out the manta ray talks, and enjoy the above the shore views of the manta rays who make their way to this region nightly to feed on plankton attracted to the hotel’s lights.

Ooh and Aah at the Waterfalls

One of the more epic things to do in Hawaii Big Island on a family vacation is visit a legendary waterfall. After all, it isn’t a trip to Hawaii if you don’t snap a few pictures in front of a waterfall.

422-foot Akaka Falls is one of the island’s most famous and impressive. Even more impressive are the shrimp that make the annual swim up the waterfall to spawn- take that salmon!

Other must-see and easy-to-reach waterfalls include Rainbow Falls, PeePee Falls (the name alone will peak most kids’ interest), and Hiilawe Falls.

Another great option is taking a zipline tour to see some less accessible waterfalls. Umauma Falls Zip Line Tours are surely an experiences your family won’t forget.

Umauma Falls Zip and Dip combo is available for kids as young as four. It take you soaring across the canyon with stunning views of the falls and also includes a chance to swim and kayak at their base. There is also a giant swing on property and hiking trails throughout the grounds.

If you would like to take a tour which visits several of Hawaii’s major waterfalls and includes a stop at Waipio Valley, this small group waterfall tour is a good choice. Your tour will travel along the Hamakua Coast to Akaka Falls, Hi’ilawe Falls, Rainbow Falls, and even includes a swim at a private waterfall.

Saddle Up to Cowboy Culture

Paniolo (Hawaiian for cowboy) culture is huge on the Big Island. Hawaii boasts some of the largest cattle pastures in the United States. Introduced in the 1500s by the Spaniard, cattle have been a part of the Hawaiian culture for hundreds of years.

The Paniolos who learned to rope, wrangle, and corral cattle have a similarity to the Mexican vaqueros (where the name came from). Families visit the island can enjoy the Paniolo culture by visiting ranches, eating a cowboy cookout meal, or even chowing down on some of the best grass-fed beef you have ever had.

If they want to get out on horseback and enjoy spectacular scenery on an 11,000-acre working cattle ranch. There are a variety of horseback riding options for families with children ages eight and older and all include views of the ocean, the coastline down to Waikoloa, and all the major volcanoes on the island.

See the Stars

Visitors arriving from urban destinations around the world will marvel at the night sky views no matter where you are on the Big Island. The small amount of light pollution makes for some stunning stargazing.

If you are looking for a more hands-on experience, consider taking the road to the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy. A nightly stargazing party is held every day of the year and special events are offered throughout various seasons.

We were able to spot the rings of Saturn, Jupiter’s moons, and up-close views of the moon through free-to-use telescopes during our visit. The center also boasts educational exhibits, a gift shop, and clean restrooms.

Kids over the age of 16 are allowed to make the climb to the summit of Mauna Kea Observatory. Altitude sickness and a guarded ranger station keep little ones out of this area.

The road to the observatory is dirt, rough, steep, and a thrilling adventure on its own. If you don’t want to brave the drive yourself, consider booking a trip with one of the many tour operators who will package the event into a lovely sunset and stargazing combination tour.

Have a star lover in your family? Don’t miss a trip to the Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo. It is hands-on exhibits and daily planetarium shows.

Visit a Volcano

One of the most exciting things to do on the Big Island with kids is see the active lava flow of a volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It is one of the few places on planet earth where this phenomenon can be observed by traveling families, so a visit to this national park is a must.

There is so much more to get excited about at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park besides lava. Among the fun at this great national park are great trails, sulfur banks, and lava tubes to explore.

Where to Stay on the Big Island with Kids

Most of the major resorts are located on the west side of the island (hello, gorgeous sunsets!), although you will find a scattering of bed and breakfasts, and smaller, independent hotels on the wetter Hilo (eastern) side. On the western side, families can fly directly into the Kona International Airport (KOA) for easy access to most hotels and resorts within 30 minutes of drive time via hotel shuttle or rental car.
