Great Wolf Lodge has a program called the Voyagers Club, a free loyalty program that’s now the easiest way to save. Members get exclusive offers, early access to sales, VIP experiences, and points on nearly everything purchased during your stay. Voyagers Club discounts can add up to hundreds of dollars over multiple visits, making it a no-brainer for families who plan to return.

2. Look for Discounts BEFORE You Book Your Great Wolf Lodge Vacation

A stay at Great Wolf Lodge is actually pretty reasonable, especially considering families receive two days of water park access for a single night’s accommodation rate.

But if the price-point seems a bit high for your family, don’t forget to look for discounts. Great Wolf Lodge is a regular on discount sites like Groupon (typically available during the off season) and their official site often features sales and bundled offers.

If you are looking to combine your Great Wolf Lodge vacation with other theme parks like Disneyland, Universal, or LEGOLAND, Getaway Today has great packages for families.

Great Wolf Lodge also offers a discount to all military, fire, emergency medical service personnel, police, and correctional officers through their Howling Heroes program! 3. Consider Day Passes Instead of Overnights

Newer to Great Wolf Lodge is the option to buy Day Passes, giving families access to the water park without an overnight stay. Passes must be purchased online in advance, and kids two and under are free. This is a great option if you’re local or want to “try before you stay.”

5. Consider Upgrading Your Great Wolf Lodge Accommodations

Although your family will likely only need one room while staying at Great Wolf Lodge, you do have some options for upgrades that should be considered in advance.

The Wolf Den and Kid Cabin suites are adorable and your kids will love having their own space to spread out while engaging in the themed interactions.

Parents should know that there is only a partial separation between the kids and adult sleeping areas, although kids do have their own YouTube & Netflix-enabled TV to watch from the kid beds.

To get the full themed-suite experience, these rooms “come to life” with a wave of a MagiQuest wand. Without this purchased upgrade, the rooms remain themed, but there are no sounds or interactions.

Parents also should know that you cannot “turn off” the themed interactions. Keeping the wands far away from the theme (in the corner of the room) seemed to help. Kids can also enjoy fun, fort-building kits, delivered in room.

6. Celebrate a Birthday or Holiday at Great Wolf Lodge

Consider celebrating your child’s birthday at Great Wolf Lodge. A variety of birthday packages are available that include room decorations, party activities, and birthday cakes (allergy-friendly cakes are available if requested in advance.).

Kids visiting the lodge will get special “birthday wolf ears” which signal the occasion. Staff and even guests will offer hearty birthday wishes to all birthday guests throughout your stay.

Holidays are also extra special at Great Wolf Lodge. Every year, they celebrate “Howl”-o-Ween, Snowland winter “howl”idays and Springfest with extra special activities, crafts, themed-dining, and more.

7. Don’t Over Pack for Your Stay at the Great Wolf Lodge

Although you’ll want to bring your family’s basics, here are a few things you can leave out of your suitcase when heading to Great Wolf Lodge. Don’t pack:

• Towels. Waterpark towels are plentiful, dry, free, and easy to grab.
• Flotation devices. The park provides these safety devices, which actually must be worn on certain attractions by smaller guests.
• Fancy clothes. Unless you plan on leaving the property to head to a fine-dining experience, you don’t need to pack anything fancy. The most luxe dining on property does have a no-swimwear rule, but shorts and a T-shirt are always appropriate.
• Sunscreen & Sunglasses. Unless you plan on spending a significant amount of time in the outdoor pool area, you won’t need sunscreen or glasses.
• Hats. I love wearing hats at the beach or a pool. But indoors, at Great Wolf Lodge, it just sat on the table waiting to be used.

8. But DO Pack These Extras

An onsite amenities store is filled with anything you do forget on your trip, but here are a few items to pack to help you make the most of your stay. Do pack:

• Bathing suit cover ups. These make it super easy to go from room to water park to resort activities/meals.
• Athletic shoes if your Great Wolf Property has a ropes course (SoCal does not).
• Snacks to keep in your room (outside food cannot be brought into the water park). Each room has a mini-fridge and microwave, making it easy to store grab-and-go meals.
• Reusable water bottles. Hydration stations are now available at most lodges.
• Waterproof phone case. Cases come in handy for taking pictures, videos, and staying in touch with family while in the pools. These are sold on property as well.
• Headphones. If you want to enjoy a book/quiet time while your kids are playing in the water park, you’ll need headphones for white noise or peaceful music. The water park is quite noisy.
• A Pool Bag. Since you can start playing at the water park on check-in day, having a “swim bag” with all of your swimming suits and necessities will help you easily visit the water park without unfolding your entire trip bag in the lobby. This same bag can be used on check-out day, when you can stay in the park until it closes. Don’t forget to fill this bag with underwear and dry clothes before heading out of your room at check out.

Great Wolf Lodge Tips- When You Arrive

9. Check In Early 9and Use the App)

Guests can gain access to the water park as early as 1pm on the day of check-in and enjoy the water park until closing time on the day of check out. This feature really allows families to maximize their water park experience.

Most families are in on the “check in early” secret, so lines can be long. Save time by:

• Checking in via the Great Wolf Lodge app — you can upload your ID and payment, then skip most of the line when you arrive.

• Picking up wristbands at kiosks — many locations now have self-serve pickup stations.

Great Wolf Lodge anticipates this and offers activities in the lobby throughout the day, especially from 1pm-5pm when most families arrive at the park. From “Lobby Bingo” to story time, crafts, and more, there is typically a “distraction” for kids while one parent waits in the check-in line.

Tip: Consider checking in early on the official Great Wolf Lodge app. You can bypass even more of the line!

10. Wristbands= Room Key + Wallet

At check-in, every family member gets a color-coded wristband. These serve multiple purposes:

• Height indicator (so lifeguards know which rides your child can enjoy).
• Room key (no more digging for cards).
• Cashless payment option (charge food, drinks, and activities to your room).

Parents can choose whether kids’ wristbands have charging privileges — handy if you want tweens to grab a snack without carrying cash.

11. Bring the Baby (and the Swim Diapers)

Tots will enjoy the zero-entry water play at Cub Paw Pool and parents will be thrilled to know this area is completely fenced in and has a magnetic safety latch to ensure little ones don’t wander off.

Babies are required to wear swim diapers in the pools. These are sold on property, but bringing your own is a good idea.

12. Walk Through the Water Park with Your Children

When children enter the water park for the first time a lifeguard will measure your child’s height and give them a wristband which determines which rides they are able to go on and which places shorter/younger children must wear a life jacket.

Taking a quick “walking tour” of the water park is a good idea upon arrival. Parents can point out the lifeguards and bathrooms, remind children of instructions, and choose a meeting place in case anyone is lost.

The park features a massive water play structure, Fort Mackenzie, which is the ideal place to splash without a pool. Water slides are everywhere from short slides for preschoolers to massive tube slides that take thrill-seekers on watery adventures.

The Southern California location also features a pool with water basketball and and obstacle course as well as wave rider where kids could boogie board or surf. Of course, no water park is complete without a lazy river and a wave pool, so Great Wolf has both.

Some lodges (like Scottsdale and Niagara) now feature expanded outdoor pools and splash pads. If the weather’s good, build in time to enjoy those too.

13. Set Up Camp

Although families are free to come and go (and should take breaks) while at the water park, be sure to set up camp each time you start your day.

Kids need to easily be able to see mom and dad in a sea of other moms and dads. An ideal location is within view of the clock tower so everyone can keep an eye on the time.

14. Stay with Little Kids (But Rest Assured in Water Safety)

The official water park signs request that parents supervise their children constantly. It also reminds you that life jackets are not a replacement for parental supervision.

That being said, Great Wolf Lodge takes water park safety seriously. There are always several lifeguards on duty at each attraction and the lifeguards are rotated frequently to prevent fatigue.  

15. Give Your Tweens Some Freedom.

The tween and teen age can be a challenge on family vacations. Great Wolf Lodge is a great place to offer a little bit of freedom without parents going into full panic mode wondering where they ran off to.

If you want your kids to have access to the room key or charging (on a special wristband), be sure to ask for that at check-in. This system works so nicely (hurray for not searching for the room key in a bag full of stuff!), but there are no room keys to pass around while grabbing something from the room.

Be sure to select a meeting place for your kids. Giving them a phone with a waterproof case is a great idea and can keep you updated on their whereabouts.

16. Allow Yourself Plenty of Time to Play MagiQuest and Other Games

The main draw of the Great Wolf Lodge is the water park, but there are lots of other things to do.The Southern California location features mini bowling and a Build-A-Bear workshop.

There is also MagiQuest (an addictive live-action role playing game where kids use magic wands and solve clues by heading to various video portals around the resort), a large (and ticket generous) arcade, a fun laser game, glow golf, fun dance parties, the Forest Friends show, morning Wolf Walks, and nightly Story Time in the Grand Lobby.

My kids played MagiQuest on our last trip and I allotted about an hour for them to enjoy this game on check-out day. I since have learned that completing the entire series of games (there are more than one) can take about 9 hours of work!

We spent nearly two hours trying to get to the point where we could “slay the dragon” for the first time. This game was one of the highlights of my trip, but make sure you allot enough time to play before purchasing. Great Wolf Lodge Tips- Saving your Sanity

Throughout my stay at Great Wolf Lodge, I realized something profound. Great Wolf Lodge is the kid equivalent of Las Vegas.

Instead of drunken twenty-somethings pounding shots, pressing their luck for a big cash payout at the casino, and strutting their stuff at the hip pool, Great Wolf is filled with candy-crazed kids pounding Dippin Dots, pressing their luck for a big ticket payout at the arcade, and giddily running from water slide to water slide (thankfully without the strut!).

A few of the other parents must have also gotten this vibe. We shared looks of solidarity. Here are a few tips for saving your adult sanity at Great Wolf Lodge.

17. Manage Your Expectations

If you arrive at Great Wolf expecting peace, quiet, and a serene time with just your small family, you will not be satisfied. Great Wolf Lodge is the kid equivalent of Vegas- noisy, busy, and packed with thrills.

If you expect that your kids will want to play from sun up until midnight, will want every toy/candy/treat/game/offering onsite, and will likely have a few meltdowns in the process, you’ll be able to join them in the fun of the resort with a lot less frustration.

18. Buy a Bundled Pass

In order to get into the water park, your family will have to walk through an underground mall/game paradise stocked with everything your child has ever wanted on planet earth. The games and extras can really add up quickly, but with some advance planning, enjoying many of these activities is quite do-able.

Bundled passes offer a variety of activities, treats & adventures at a discounted price, starting at $50/person.

These passes include options like MagiQuest wands and games, glitter tattoos, candy, ice cream, arcade points, and more. I recommend families explore the passes online before check-in when pressure to purchase a specific pass is amplified by anxious kiddos hoping to explore everything.

There are passes designed for families who want to do it all (the Wolf Pass), for families wishing to do a few activities (the Paw Pass), and even for families with only young kiddos (the Pup Pass).

19. Take Advantage of Free Activities

When your six-year-old is sad she can’t play any more arcade games, distract her with the free social activities happening on the lobby level.

Although there are a lot of activities on site that have an associated cost, there are plenty of free activities already included in your stay. Take advantage of these perks such as:

• Dance parties and story time in the lobby
• Yoga for kids and parents
• Seasonal crafts (especially during Howl-O-Ween, Snowland, and Springfest)
• Character meet-and-greets

Tip: The Great Wolf Lodge app lists daily activities and can send reminders so you don’t miss a thing.

20. Look for Sensory-Friendly Programming

In partnership with Autism Speaks, many Great Wolf Lodge locations now host sensory-inclusive events and provide quieter spaces for kids who need a break from the stimulation. Check with guest services or the app for availability during your stay.

21. Pack Snack & Easy Meals

Great Wolf Lodge boasts numerous on-site restaurants, so you won’t go hungry. But if you are looking to save some money on dining, consider packing some of your own food from home. You can even tote a cooler through the lobby and into your room (but you can’t take it in the water park).

All rooms feature coffee makers, mini-refrigerators, and microwaves. Packing snacks, a few drinks, and simple breakfasts is incredibly easy.

Note: Outside food is not allowed in the water park; you’ll have to take a swim break to head to your room for PB&Js if that is your plan.

22. But Plan on Enjoying the Onsite Food as Well via Dining Deals

Packing a few meals can be a huge money-saver, but not preparing meals can be a great relaxer for moms and dads looking for a getaway themselves.

Southern California features two dining options inside the water park: Buckets (think fries, hot dogs, chicken strips, etc…) and Grizzly Jack’s Bar & Grill (located outside with a bit more sophisticated flare- shrimp tacos, poke bowls, mixed drinks, etc…).

Prices are not terrible, especially on shareable items. One of the better ways to save money is to purchase Dining Deals. The Platinum Dining Deal gives you $150 worth of food credit for $135. The Gold Dining Deal will give you $100 worth of food credit for $90.

Finally, the Wolf Wakeup Breakfast gives you access to the buffet for $20.99 per day. This is best for families that are big breakfast eaters and can take advantage of the all-you-can-eat concept.

Also on site is Hungry Like a Wolf pizza restaurant with very reasonable prices on whole pizzas or by-the-slice options; Dunkin’ Donuts, for an afternoon pick-me-up; Bear Paw Sweets & Eats, with everything from crepes to ice cream, fresh fruit, and more; The Loose Moose Family Kitchen, a buffet with a wide assortment of options; and Lodge Wood Fired Grill, which served up one of the most delicious filet mignon steaks I have had in ages.

Other than the buffet, all on-site food can be packed and taken into the water park.

23. Mobile Ordering = Less Waiting

The Great Wolf Lodge app now allows mobile ordering at most restaurants. This means you can order pizza, snacks, or even drinks from your lounge chair and skip the lines. On busy weekends, this is a major sanity saver.

24. Ask About Food Allergies

Great Wolf Lodge takes food allergies very seriously. The resort recognizes that food allergies and special diets are more common than ever and they go to great lengths to make sure everyone is safe.

The entire resort is nut free! Everything that goes into the fryer is gluten free to prevent cross contamination. We did run into a couple servers who were not extremely accessible/knowledgeable about food allergies during our visit, but when we asked for a chef or manager, we received amazing, careful care.

25. Splurge on a Cabana

Especially on busy days (we once visited when the resort was at 100% capacity), the water park can get very crowded. Finding enough chairs for the whole family, keeping those chairs, and having a bit of privacy/seclusion can be a challenge.

Enter the cabana rental. Although it is pricey (rental prices change depending on season but start around $150/day), a cabana is a splurge worth having, especially for groups.

Each day’s rental comes with chairs and a table for six, ice-cold refrigerator stocked full of non-alcoholic drinks, on-call food and beverage service (no need to wait in any lines!), a fresh supply of towels, a television for down time, ceiling fan to cool non-swimmers, a safe for storing your valuables, and easy access to your cabana the entire day.

Note: Many of the cabanas are outdoors. Although these are nice for families wishing to soak up some Vitamin D and the outdoor pool and splash area, they are quite removed from the water park.

26. Mind the Thrill Gap

My two older kids love adventure and they spend about 90% of their time on the big slides. My youngest is extremely timid and she spends about 90% of her time on the lazy river.

I felt like I spent about 90% of my time making sure my youngest wasn’t alone, didn’t feel left out, and secretly trying to sneak off to ride a few big slides. I pined for a few minutes with my hubby as we spent most of our time “dividing and conquering.”

If your family is made up of varied ages or thrill gaps (as mine is), I heartily suggest bringing a friend (or even a whole family of friends) that can give everyone a like-minded buddy to have a great time with.

27. Grab a Drink

In addition to sodas, Icees, and water, Great Wolf Lodge also serves up adult beverages to help the grown ups relax a bit more. The resort offers a wide selection of wine, craft beer, cocktails, and coffee.

28. “Wine Down” Your Day

Great Wolf Lodge recognizes that as fun as it can be, it takes a lot of energy for moms and dads to play with their kids all day. They offer an evening “Wine Down” service.

Parents can pick a time frame and receive a bottle of wine, wine glasses, opener, and even wine pairings (we had the chocolates!) to enjoy while the kiddos sleep away their exhaustion.

If you can afford to, staying on Disneyland Resort property during your Disneyland family vacation is a great way to go. Disneyland Resort hotels come with some great perks.

Those staying at one of the Disneyland Resort hotels may take advantage of a 30-minute early entry into a designated theme park for every day of their hotel stay. Each day, either Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure Park will be open early. You can find out which park opens early on the theme park calendar.

The prime location of these hotels makes for easy access to both parks, with a separate entrance for resort guests to Disney’s California Adventure through Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and those staying at Pixar Place Hotel can use a walkway across the street from their hotel to access the park.

If you are looking for suites that are designed to sleep up to nine people and several of the comforts of home with plenty of Disney Magic mixed in, look no further than the Villas at Disneyland Hotel. These brand new villas are the 16th Disney Vacation Club (DVC) resort, and are inspired by the iconic storytelling of Walt Disney Studios.

And here is the best part- you don’t have to be a member of DVC to book a stay here!

The decor in villa rooms is inspired by Disney animation classics and every room has a gorgeous, story-themed mural from films like The Jungle Book, The Princess and the Frog, and Fantasia.

Families will especially adore the one- and two-bedroom villas which include a full-size kitchen, dining area, living area, and in-room laundry. One bedroom villas sleep five and two bedroom villas sleep nine. One bedrooms can also be adjoined with a Deluxe Studio room, a great option for multi-generational groups. Deluxe studios sleep four and duo studios sleep two.

One- and two-bedroom villas also have master bedrooms with a swanky en-suite bathroom featuring gorgeous mosaic murals, soaking tubs, and spa-like showers. And we absolutely love Disney’s space-saving solution to sleeping- queen-size Murphy beds in the main room can be pulled down over the sofa! So much better than those uncomfortable sofa beds!

If you really want to go big, book the absolutely breathtaking, two-story Grand Villa. As a writer who has covered Disney for 15 years and had the opportunity to tour several amazing lodging spaces, I think this one tops them all! The wall of windows with its double-sided fireplace connecting the living area to a private outdoor balcony with a wow-inducing view took my breath away.

The three-bedroom villa sleeps up to 12 and has a full-size kitchen, large dining area, and Bambi-inspired master suite. Up the impressive spiral staircase you will find two more bedrooms- one with a Frozen theme and one with a Moana theme- which have their own en-suite bathrooms.

Disneyland Hotel

Best for the ultimate magical experience

This magical hotel delights families with lots of special touches such as headboards that play ” A dream is a wish your heart makes”, character greetings in the lobby, and many interactive experiences like learning how to draw Disney characters from Imagineers.

The Disneyland Hotel is the original Disney-owned hotel, with a prime location and easy access to the Monorail Station in Downtown Disney which takes families directly to Disneyland’s Tomorrowland.

You will want to reserve at least one afternoon of your vacation for swimming in the hotel’s E-Ticket Pool. The kids will especially love splashing down the Monorail Slide. Mom and dad will want to stop by Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar to pick up a boozy treat.

Disneyland Hotel opened in 1955 just three months after Disneyland. As part of the Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration, there will be special banners, medallions, and wall art decorating the hotel. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa

Best for a luxury splurge

A stay at the Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is a must if you can afford the splurge. The Craftsman-style architecture instantly whisks you away from Orange County and drops you into a luxurious national park lodge with its high ceilings, wood beams, and a roaring warm fire filling the lobby.

Standard rooms are well equipped and comfortable, although not overly large. If you can manage to snag a Disney Vacation Club villa, you will have lots of space and even kitchen space.

This property was recently renovated and now has rooms decorated with Pixar-themed furnishings. On select nights, you can even enjoy Disneyland fireworks and the soundtrack that accompanies them from the hotel’s third floor pool deck.

Character dining, a new pool deck with Crush’s Surfin’ Slide, games on the Pixar Shorts Court, and early entry to theme parks are just a few reasons why your family will love Pixar Place. This relaxed and contemporary property is a great place to make your Disney memories.

More Great Hotels Near Disneyland for Families

You don’t have to stay on Disneyland Resort property to stay at a great hotel. As a matter of fact several of our most favorite hotels near Disneyland are off-property but still have quick and easy access to the parks.

Long gone are the subpar motels that used to line Harbor Blvd and Katella Avenue. Anaheim is a family-friendly destination that is newly revitalized. Great accommodations can be found all over the city and most area hotels offer pools, dining experiences, and transportation options to the resort.

Walt Disney Travel uses the term “Good Neighbor” to indicate a property that provides quality accommodations and is located close to the Disneyland Resort. Thankfully, with so many properties close to Disneyland, there are lots of great options.

Anaheim Majestic Garden Hotel

Best for the royal treatment

When I was growing up I simply knew it as the “castle hotel” and thought only the most rich and famous could stay there. In reality, this gem of a property is called Anaheim Majestic Garden Hotel, and it is priced within reach of many families looking for a storybook stay near Disneyland.

The property, designed to look like a grand European castle, features a beautiful story of a princess who saved her kingdom that is featured on the walls of the halls, allowing children to navigate the hotel to follow the tale. Princess wake-up and tuck-in service is available upon request (reserve at least 7 days in advance).

The grounds are beautiful with lush gardens, bubbling fountains, and even a koi pond! There is a nice pool area with first-some, first-served cabanas and a pool bar that is open during the summer months. There are also movie nights in the courtyard during the summer.

Standard rooms include mini fridges and coffee makers and are spacious enough to fit a rollaway bed if needed. Most families choose to have two queen beds but there is a king option as well.

The hotel offers a free, direct shuttle to Disneyland via their Dream Machine buses and the ride is typically only 6 – 10 minutes.

Holiday Inn & Suites Anaheim

Best for easy walking to the parks and themed suites

Located next to the Mickey and Friends parking structure and Downtown Disney, The Holiday Inn & Suites Anaheim is a great option for those who want to walk to the parks or catch the shuttle from the parking structure to access the Disneyland Resort.

At this pet-friendly hotel you will be happy to learn that kids eat free (load up on breakfast before heading into the parks!), there is a pool with plenty of shade structures and pool loungers, an awesome splash pad for the kiddos, and standard rooms still come with microwaves and mini fridges- score!

Of course, you may want to upgrade to one of their themed suites which comes with separate living and dining areas, a bedroom with two queen beds, and super cute theming throughout. These are great (and quite affordable) for families who want space after a long day together at the parks. I toured the Mickey Mouse and Frozen suites but there are also others like Star Wars, Cinderella, and Pirates!

Trekaroo tip: If you don’t feel like waiting in the long security and tram lines that come with the Mickey and Friends lot, simply follow the signs at the bottom of the structure to the walkway to Downtown Disney. The walk is short and pleasant, plus the security line to enter Downtown Disney is always quick. From there you can stroll through Downtown Disney to the park entrances and often make it to the parks faster than if you took the tram!

Hyatt House Anaheim Resort/Convention Center

Best for apartment-style accommodations

The Hyatt House at Anaheim Resort, located on the corner of Harbor & Katella, is a fabulous option for families seeking modern, apartment-style accommodations during their Disney trip with the added perks & benefits of a hotel included.

The full kitchen allows families to dine in-room on a budget (or easily pack lunches, stash leftovers, etc…) while the complimentary buffet-style breakfast gets your family ready for a day’s worth of adventure with full stomachs.

Families will also feel at home with a variety of game rentals to play in room, sprawling pool deck with BBQs available for use, onsite dining and bar, fireworks views, and laundry machines that allow you to pack light. Kid’s Suites include bunk beds and separate TV areas.

Four Points by Sheraton Anaheim

In addition to a pool and hot tub, they also have a small splash pad, ping pong, and lots of seating around the Palapa Bar and Lounge which has a great tiki-thatched roof.

The other onsite restaurant, Tru Grits, serves up classic American dishes with an Asian twist and is open for breakfast and dinner. If you are craving pizza, Shakey’s, a classic of my childhood, is just a tenth a mile away.

Standard-sized rooms come with two queen beds or one king and have mini fridges and coffee makers for your convenience. Some rooms even come with Disneyland fireworks views!

As a Marriott Bonvey points accruer, I am always looking for a property that falls under the Bonvoy family of hotels but also has space for me, my husband, and my two teens to spread out. In addition to two queen beds, studio rooms at SpringHill Suites Anaheim Maingate also have a living area with a sofa bed, microwave, coffee maker, and mini fridge. Some rooms have fireworks views as well!

A full breakfast is included with your stay so your family can fill their bellies before heading out to the parks. There is also a pool, a fitness center, and a small marketplace. Best for large groups and family reunions

Anyone who has spent time at the Anaheim Convention Center is surely familiar with the Hilton Anaheim, a large, full service hotel that is popular with convention goers as well as park goers.

An 18-minute walk from Disneyland or a three-minute ride on their shuttle (for an additional fee), the Hilton Anaheim is not only close enough to get back and forth quickly, it’s also convenient enough for a mid-day pool break from the Southern California heat. 

Trekaroo tip: Walk across Harbor Blvd. to the Toy Story parking lot and you can catch the free Disney shuttle which runs continuously and drops you off right outside the parks!

The hotel is a 15-minute walk to the main gate (or walk around the corner to the Toy Story lot and catch the free shuttle) and located just across the street from the Gardenwalk, which hosts great shopping, musical events, and family-friendly food options.

The pool deck and water park is the highlight of this property. Not only is there a giant water play structure but there are two waterslides, a full pool, Jacuzzi and a one foot splash pool for the kids!

Located just down the street from the Disneyland Resort, Great Wolf Lodge Southern California is truly a destination unto itself. This resort features the first indoor water park in California as well as several other attractions such as minigolf, an arcade, a kids spa, and MagiQuest, an addictive live-action role playing game.

Many rooms include “Wolf Dens” or “KidCabins” which feature special little rooms for children complete with bunk beds and their own private flat-screen TVs.

I spoke to various artisans, locals, and shopkeepers, and found that everyone had a story to tell. A story of how they came to Santa Fe. Perhaps they arrived in the ‘60’s in a VW microbus, or via a cross-country bicycle trip, or just fell in love with it when visiting one of the local ancient cliff dwellings.

Santa Fe can inspire creative aspirations in little ones. It’s for the future artisan and the budding adventurer. Santa Fe is a beautiful blend of pueblo revival architecture, a mix of the Native American and early Spanish influence amidst a vibrant green and brown high desert landscape. It was founded in 1607 and was once the capital of Spain’s and Mexico’s territories north of the Rio Grande. Santa Fe is home to the third largest art market in the United States. It also has the benefit of being an extremely walkable city.

Inspire the Artisan

Taking a stroll down Canyon Road is like taking a stroll through an art gallery. There are nearly 240 galleries located in Santa Fe. All manner of sculpture and art with varying styles from Southwest to contemporary modern can be seen from the road. Even if you’ve got toddlers that you don’t want to take into the galleries, there is plenty of colorful outdoor whimsy to keep short attention spans at bay.

What not to miss: Giant horse head sculpture

The Georgia O’Keefe Museum is the only museum in the United States that is dedicated to an internationally-known female artist. The museum showcases O’Keefe’s paintings, drawings, and sculptures. As art museums go, it is accessible and kid friendly. O’Keefe’s art runs the gamut from her trademark large paintings of flowers, to abstractions, and landscapes. The museum regularly houses rotating exhibitions such as, “Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: The Hawai’i Pictures.” Volunteer docents are on-hand to give in-depth tours, though if you’ve got kids in tow, know that they can potentially run 1.5 hours.

What not to miss: Discovery guides and sketchbooks that your kids can carry around the museum. Check the website for youth and family programs such as “Dramatic Play and Art” and early openings just for families with children.

If you’ve got kids who are budding photographers, photographic opportunities abound in Santa Fe. Popular spots include the Loretto Chapel with it’s miraculous free standing staircase, the nearby San Miguel Mission (1610) which is the oldest church in the U.S., and the various galleries along Canyon Road. The 1800’s era St. Francis Cathedral is hard to miss at the end of Cathedral Place and is filled with beautiful stained glass.

Meet a craftsperson

Walk the downtown Santa Fe plaza, a traditional Spanish-American colonial town center. Surrounded by boutiques, shops, and galleries, you’ll find locals and tourists alike milling about the town’s central green space.

The Native American Vendors Program is the place to stroll through to find one of a kind handmade wares made and sold directly by Native American artists. Located in the portal of the Palace of the Governors (1610), the building is the oldest continuously occupied structure in the United States. It is adjacent to the plaza and the New Mexico History Museum.

Looking for something that is heirloom quality? Check out the John Rippel U.S.A. shop just off the main plaza on Old Santa Fe Trail. The shop sells hand-engraved and hammered sterling belt buckles made by John himself, as well as unique jewelry such as the reversible flip ring crafted by local artisans such as Gloria Sawin.

What not to miss: Stop and take the time to have a conversation with the local artisans. Get a sense of place and learn about their craft.

Stoke your sense of adventure

Got kids with a sense of adventure and a love for the outdoors? Santa Fe has a myriad of outdoor activities for the hiker, skier, mountain biker, fisherman, or white water rafter. Start with a walk along the river, or walk up to the Cross of the Martyrs to get an expansive view of the city. If you want to head further afield, Bandelier National Monument is about an hour outside town and has a number of cliff dwellings that are fun for kids to explore. If you’re looking for some guided adventures for the entire family, check out Santa Fe Mountain Adventures. They offer hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and scenic cultural tours.

One highlight of my trip was the off road adventure in the six-wheeled Pinzgauer vehicle along the old Route 66. The Pinzgauer is a unique all-terrain vehicle which is named after an Austrian breed of horse.

The views of the high desert are expansive and stunningly beautiful. You’ll get a chance to marvel at the old unpaved route 66, the remains of the original El Camino Real, and various petroglyphs from the early inhabitants of the area.

The friendly and knowledgeable owners and guides Georges and Sue make the trip engaging and educational. You’ll learn about the different periods of history, including the Native American and Spanish cultures.

Play and learn

Kids need play and exploration time. The Santa Fe Children’s Museum is an engaging place and a great stop to do something that is entirely kid-centric. Do your kids like creepy crawlie bugs? The vast insect collection is remarkable. Let them play in the huge outdoor sand pit, build some creations at the LEGO station, play with magnets, splash at the water area, all while having fun learning about science via the interactive exhibits. Located one mile south of the Plaza.

Eat well

Santa Fe has plenty of family-friendly restaurants, many with outdoor seating. First on your list should be the casual Cowgirl BBQ Santa Fe. Why? It’s got “The Mother of All Green Chile Burgers,” a great selection of craft beer, AND an outdoor playspace for the kids! The menu has a wide variety of items, including some vegetarian options.

For a quick, fun, and not so healthy lunch, check out the Five and Dime at the edge of the plaza. It may look like a general store, but head to the back and it’s got a snack bar that sells frito pies. What’s a frito pie you ask? Hot steaming chili and cheese thrown into a fritos chip bag! Anthony Bourdain ate it, and so did I.

Looking for a romantic dinner or a fantastic breakfast? Check out Luminaria, located at the Inn and Spa at Loretto. The patio and veranda also lend a great outdoors atmosphere on warm nights. I recommend trying the blue corn pancakes with piñon syrup. Luminaria is a Conde’ Nast Traveler’s World’s Best, Gold List award recipient.

Sleep soundly

Santa Fe has a wide variety of accommodations. The Inn and Spa at Loretto is a solid choice. Stay near the plaza in this distinctive pueblo revival style hotel modeled after the Taos Pueblo. This posh inn and spa is within walking distance to all of downtown, next to the historic Loretto Chapel, and made it on Travel + Leisure’s 500 World’s Best list. There is a refreshing outdoor pool, and some of the rooms have balconies, which offer views of the city and the sunrise. The spa is top notch, having earned a Reader’s Choice award from Conde Nast Traveler.

What not to miss: The miraculous steps at the adjacent Loretto Chapel. The blue corn pancakes with piñon syrup for breakfast at Luminaria restaurant.

Tip: If you’ve got light sleepers (kids or adults), request a room on the side opposite from the cathedral, as the bells can tend to ring loudly.

Traveling to Santa Fe

Santa Fe is easily accessible via plane, train, or automobile. The Santa Fe Municipal Airport is accessible via flights from Dallas, Denver, and Los Angeles via American Eagle and United Airlines. Another option for the multi-modal traveler would be to fly into Albuquerque and take the one hour drive. Better yet, skip the car and grab a ride on the New Mexico Rail Runner train, which runs 7 days a week between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Banff to Jasper Driver Stop 2: Lake Louise

Only a 40-minute drive from Banff lies Lake Louise. The small community named after the lake that made it famous is definitely worth visiting. Lake Louise itself is a turquoise-colored lake that sits at 5,740 feet above sea level.

In the background of this iconic scene, the Victoria Glacier can be seen year-round. Lake Louise is home to adventure year-round. In summer, rent a canoe to explore the lake or hike to the Lake Agnes Tea House.

Families with experience hiking may want to continue on to Little Beehive, a trail with incredible views. In winter, hit the hills at the Lake Louise Ski Resort.

The village of Lake Louise is also home to Moraine Lake. This incredible lake is situated in the Valley of Ten Peaks. One of the most dramatic backdrops in all of Banff National Park. The road to Moraine Lake opens seasonally from June to late September.

Banff to Jasper Drive Stop 3: The Icefields Parkway to Saskatchewan River Crossing

The excitement begins as you pull onto the Icefields Parkway just minutes after departing Lake Louise. The gentle climb leads to incredible views quickly.

Be sure to watch for animals as bears, goats, wolves, coyotes, elk, and deer are often seen along the Banff to Jasper drive. On this portion of the highway, you’ll want to have a camera ready as each turn leads to another incredible mountain view. 

Along the Icefields Parkway, there are numerous signs marking hikes and viewpoints. Keep an eye out for the sign to Bow Summit Lookout.

This stop is best known for its view of Peyto Lake. In summer, Peyto Lake is a unique bright turquoise color. Some visitors also remark that the lake is shaped like a dog. Peyto is one of Canada’s most photographed lakes due to its sheer beauty.

Once you continue on the Banff to Jasper drive, keep an eye out for Parker Ridge. This 2.7 km hike (5.4km roundtrip) leads you to a viewpoint of the Saskatchewan Glacier. This hike is easy for families. 

Once you arrive at Saskatchewan River Crossing, turn onto Highway 11 to access some lesser-known hikes. Families particularly love hiking to Siffleur Falls. Here, families can explore an easy and wide trail that features a suspension bridge and a boardwalk leading to an incredible gorge and three waterfalls.

The Columbia Icefield is one of the largest non-polar ice fields in the world. The Icefield feeds six major glaciers, one of which, the Athabasca Glacier is accessible from the Icefields Parkway.

The Columbia Icefield lies atop of a triple Continental Divide meaning its waters flow to the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Hudson Bay. As you approach the Columbia Icefield and Athabasca Glacier, the scenery along the Banff to Jasper drive turns from stunning to out of this world. 

While the drives between stops on the Icefields Parkway are short, they can take much longer than expected as mountain goats wander on the highway and visitors stop numerous times to take in the views. When planning to visit the Athabasca Glacier, you will want to schedule at least 3-4 hours.

The easiest and safest way to experience the glacier is by embarking on the Columbia Icefields Adventure. The tour offered by Pursuit allows guests to board an Ice Explorer that takes you across a sheet of ice.

Guests are allowed to disembark to explore the glacier and fill water bottles with glacier water. After the tour, guests are whisked to the Skywalk, a glass walkway that stands 918 feet above the Sunwapta Valley. Advance bookings are required for both these experiences.

Glacier View Lodge – In previous years, the Athabasca Glacier was a day trip from Banff and Jasper. Now with the opening of the Glacier View Lodge, guests can sleep in a Dark Sky Preserve with a view of the glacier. Splurge for the all-inclusive experience to enjoy private tours of the glacier and Skywalk, a three-course dinner, and more. 

Banff to Jasper Drive Stop 5: Athabasca Glacier to Sunwapta Falls

The drive from Athabasca Glacier to Sunwapta Falls is a shorter portion of the Banff to Jasper drive but worth taking slowly. The Sunwapta Falls are a series of three waterfalls.

The upper falls are visible from the road. Families will love exploring the short trail through the forest to the lower falls. These falls are formed by a change of flow in the Sunwapta River that has carved a beautiful gorge. The roar of falls can be heard throughout the hike.

Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge – Families looking for kid-friendly accommodation on the Banff to Jasper drive will love the Sunwapta Falls Rocky Mountain Lodge. Stay in your own cabin with a wood fireplace as even in summer Alberta nights are cold. Access the Sunwapta Falls trail from the hotel parking lot and explore at your own leisure. Guests who hit the trail early often have it to themselves. 

Banff to Jasper Drive Final Stop: Jasper National Park

Once you have completed the Banff to Jasper drive on the iconic Icefields Parkway, you will not want to stop exploring. Jasper is one of Canada’s best national parks and adventure abounds.

In summer, kids love riding the Jasper Skytram to the top of Whistlers Mountain. Look for marmots on the top of the mountain whose whistling gave Whistlers Mountain its name.

Kids wanting to visit their first mountain summit will find the Whistlers Summit Trail easy and fun. From the tram to the top it is only 2.3 miles. 

On a hot summer day, join the locals at Lake Annette and Edith Lake. Bring floats and a picnic and take time to enjoy the stunning backdrops and hikes the depart from trailheads near the lakes. 

When visiting Jasper, a trip to Maligne Lake is always recommended. Board a boat with Maligne Lake Tours to see the iconic Spirit Island. Other not to be missed sites include visiting the Miette Hot Springs, Maligne Canyon, and Athabasca Falls.

9. Take a Walk Through Hampstead Heath

11. Take in a Production at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is located in Southwark. It’s a modern reconstruction of the original Globe that was built in 1599. 13. See Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the House of Parliament

Teens will enjoy Instagramming and posing in front of the Clock Tower at the Palace of Westminster, which is probably the most famous clock in the world. Westminster Abbey, formally titled the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter at Westminster, is a large mainly Gothic abbey church just to the west of the Palace of Westminster.

Better known today as the Houses of Parliament, the Palace of Westminster is the oldest royal palace in London. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as one of the most recognized buildings in the world.

Abbey Road Studios is where the Beatles recorded their albums. It is still being used as a recording studio today.

Teen girls love shopping on Oxford Street in the middle of London. Its stores have a tremendous range, and your kids will be sure to find their favorite shops along the road.

Many of the stores are flagship locations, such as Topshop, so they are big and well-stocked. Other girl teen faves include Uniqlo, Urban Outfitters, Primark, Lush, and H&M.

Teen boys will gravitate toward the new Microsoft store and sporty stores such as Nike Town and Adidas. In addition, most of these stores have food halls with whole floors dedicated to specialty foods and sweets.

17. Spend Time at Madame Tussauds London

Teens will love a visit to Madame Tussauds London where they can scout out lifelike replicas of 250 famous Brits made out of wax. The London location is the original location of Madame Tussauds, so it is a special place.

Which Brits will your teens be able to identify? There’s Elton John, David Beckham, Sir Lawrence Olivier, and, of course, the Royals. There is also a movie, Alien: Escape, Marvel Superheroes 4D. Be sure to book online in advance to save money on the cost of admission.

18. Explore Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is dedicated to the memory of the London 2012 Olympics, one of the most exciting events ever to take place in the history of London.

Teens will enjoy reliving the popular event with its adventure playground, Timber Lodge, and the amazing ArcelorMittal Orbit with views of the park and the rest of London. Your teens can even swim in the London Aquatics Centre.

19. Take Time Out in Hyde Park

Hyde Park covers over 600 acres in central London. Active teens will like taking a break and taking in a bike ride, stroll, or renting bikes on the lakes. Or they may want to chill and spend some time lying on the grass after a day of touring, checking out their phones.

If you’re at Hyde Park on a Sunday, be sure to go to Speaker’s Corner for public speeches and debates by random British citizens taking on random subjects. It will surely be an experience your teens won’t forget anytime soon.

21. Tour Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

If your teen is (or once was) a fan of the Harry Potter series, then the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London is an absolute must! The tour is located just 20 minutes outside of London in Leavesden. Buses are available from the city center. 

The tour offers an inside look at at all of the Harry Potter films in the franchise. Your teens will be able to tour the sets of Hogwarts, Dumbledore’s office, the Great Hall, Diagon Alley, and more!

23. Hit the Tate Modern for a Dose of Art and Take a Stroll Down Southbank

The Tate Modern is located in the heart of Southbank. This modern art museum is free (as are most of the museums in London, a definite perk of visiting the city!) and offers peeks at modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali.

Located right on the River Thames, Southbank is a cultural center that houses the Royal Festival Hall, Hayward Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall and more.

It’s also a beautiful walkway on the river with restaurants, buskers and a lot to see on a stroll. The views of London across the way are stunning and it also holds much in the way of Instagram possibilities for your teens.

24. See the Changing of the Guard

Watching the changing of the guard is about as “touristy in London” as it gets, but it still is fun to watch! This event will be a true highlight for any teen visiting the city. It typically takes place in front of Buckingham Palace at 11:30am, every other day.

Check the palace website for up to date information. Arrive 30 minutes early to secure prime viewing.

25. Ride the Canals in Camden & Have Launch at Waterside Cafe

After a stroll through Camden Market’s unique stalls full of interesting fashion items and collectibles, jump on a boat operated by Regent’s Canal Waterbus which takes you for a ride through Camden Lock, Little Venice, and the London Zoo.

For about an hour, your can ride through the canals past interesting architecture, industrial history, wildlife, and scenery. 

Then have lunch at the quaint Waterside Café, a restaurant that sits on the water in a converted houseboat in nearby Little Venice.  They serve traditional British cuisine.
