The Victorian-themed establishment is lavishly adorned in art and antiques, with every detail as thoughtfully chosen as the witty words of a clever playwright. Leafing through the cocktail menu offers a history lesson on Oscar Wilde and on the building’s history: drinks are crafted to evoke moments in Wilde’s life and career as well as New York City’s complicated history with prohibition and temperance. The Oscar Wilde is the must-visit among famous bars in NYC, turning the straightlaced Victorian vibe on its head with cleverness and panache!

McSorley’s Old Ale House / 15 E 7th St, East Village

When your establishment’s most famous patrons include both John Lennon and Abraham Lincoln, you know you’ve made it amongst the most famous bars in NYC. McSorley’s Old Ale House boasts “they’ve been here since before you were born,” as NYC’s oldest continuously-operating bar. They don’t let the fame go to their head, though: the bar is cash only, the menu is restricted to burgers and sandwiches, and the drinks on offer are listed as simply “light ale” and “dark ale,” but the laid-back, no-frills atmosphere is a refreshingly grounding experience for patrons who’ve been returning since 1854. According to Golden Girls lore, Sophia Petrillo claimed to have given birth to Bea Arthur’s character Dorothy on the pool table at McSorley’s - HOWEVER! This is a historical anachronism, as McSorley’s didn’t permit women entry into the bar until a landmark Supreme Court case in 1970! When women were allowed in, there was no dedicated restroom for them to use, therefore, McSolery’s was one of the first NYC bars to have an all-gender restroom by default. That’s some history!

The Stonewall Inn / 53 Christopher Street, Greenwich Village

The National Historic Landmark Stonewall Inn simply must be counted among the most famous bars in NYC. The birthplace of Pride, a history born out of strife, has turned into the headquarters of LGBTQ+ joy in Greenwich Village. In addition to the historic bar (which saved my life during a random hailstorm one August by offering shelter and brandy to warm up), the venue boasts an upstairs piano bar with singing waitstaff, a lounge with a pool table and karaoke, weekly bingo nights and drag performances on a rotating schedule. It’s definitely the entertainment that draws patrons to The Stonewall Inn, spilling out into Christopher Street during summer Open Streets weekends. The Stonewall Inn radiates the energy of Greenwich Village far beyond its walls, cementing their legacy as one of the most vibrant, historic, and famous bars in NYC.

The Algonquin Hotel Blue Bar / 59 W 44th Street, Midtown

Home to the famous Round Table, the Algonquin was one of the most famous bars in NYC about 100 years ago, and I think it’s overdue for a revival! Their newly reimagined Blue Bar brings a modern aesthetic to this space steeped in history. Dorothy Parker drank here. No, really. The artwork of Al Hirschfeld, another regular at the Algonquin, adorns the space to bring its legacy into the modern era. The well-rounded menu features wines, some beers, and signature and classic cocktails - I once had the most flawlessly executed Old-Fashioned here that definitely made me feel as glamorously witty as Dorothy Parker, and you can’t tell me otherwise. As she once famously mused: “Three be the things I shall never attain: envy, content, & sufficient Champagne.” If you’re in Midtown, you can certainly find sufficient champagne at the Blue Bar at the Algonquin Hotel!

Beauty & Essex / 146 Essex St, Lower East Side

If we’re all reminiscing about the early 2010s, I am reminded of the time when every Millennial’s dream was a lavish night at Beauty and Essex. In the trendy neighborhood of the Lower East Side, this lavishly-decorated speakeasy has a decidedly opulent feel: grand staircase, playful chandeliers, warm hues of salmon and pink - and it doesn’t stop there! Serving not only a range of signature and luxury cocktails, there is a menu of inventive zero-proof options. Beauty and Essex also serves food - and boasts a dedicated vegan menu! Bring the girls for brunch and order the show-stopping Wonder Wheel: a chef’s selection of sweets served in a functioning, light-up ferris wheel. No “wonder” this remains one of the most famous bars in NYC!

The Fraunces Tavern / 54 Pearl St, Downtown

History buffs will remember the Fraunces Tavern at George Washington’s favorite local restaurant - yes, it’s THAT historic! Located inside the old Delancey family home, you can feel the history around every corner of this legendary Downtown space. In the spacious dining rom area, there is a vast mural of New York harbor, painted in 1765 - or, curl up in a cozy chair by the fireplace in the Dingle Whiskey Bar. Personally, I’ve enjoyed many a Friday night in the annex of the space, built in the 1800s, with itchy cow-hide booths and a DJ spinning classic dance hits. The bar boasts many beers and ciders on tap, and the cocktail menu is vintage in feel as a nod to their history - think gimlets, old fashioneds, even the obscure Parisian cocktail the Boulevardier! Cramped but cozy, the Fraunces Tavern is among my favorite famous bars in NYC. Get the truffle fries. Trust me on this one.

Babka is what put Breads Bakery on the map, so Breads put a babka on their logo. Literally! Their signature chocolate babka is a mixture of Nutella and dark chocolate, which alone is an impressive innovation on the babka classic. But if you visit their DUMBO location, you have the exclusive opportunity to taste their Pizza Babka, with spicy shakshuka-inspired tomato sauce atop the flaky pastry. Now that’s what I call a New York Babka!

What’s better than one gluten-free babka? How about seven creative flavors of gluten-free babka! Bronx babka breakout 3x3 Kitchen offers innovative flavors that expand on traditional babkas, such as adding cardamom and saffron or walnuts to their cinnamon babka and pistachio to their chocolate offering, without the pesky gluten!

Scooping up cones & dishes under the iconic yellow dragon flag since 1978, Chinatown Ice Cream Factory makes some of the best ice cream NYC keeps coming back for! Some of our favorite flavors include Lychee, Black Sesame, Red Bean, Ube, and Banana - but they're always rotating in special flavors like Cherry Pistachio, Pumpkin Pie, even Durian (yes, DURIAN) flavored ice creams! This second-generation-run “unofficial landmark” of NYC is a sure thing and ranks highly for me personally among the best ice cream NYC boasts.

2. Van Leeuwen / 📍 Various Locations

One of the best ice cream NYC makes right here at home, Van Leeuwen is hard to spell but easy to enjoy, as they offer a variety of flavors both with dairy and without! Vegans & the lactose-intolerant, rejoice! Starting off as a cheerful yellow ice cream truck in 2008 right here in NYC, Van Leewen has proliferated the NYC ice cream scene with their classic standbys. I am always torn between my favorites, like their Earl Grey Tea and Black Cherry Chip flavors, and their experimental and exciting seasonal specials. Van Leeuwen is not one to shy away from pushing the envelope of what is acceptable in ice cream (remember the viral Mac n Cheese flavor controversy?), yet with their ice cream wizardry, they always manage to stick the landing!

3. Oddfellows / 📍 various locations

A trip to Oddfellows is definitely … a trip! Wind-up Monkeys are the mascot for this manic sweet spot, whose classic flavors offer a subtle twist (Sprinkles IN the ice cream? Strawberry JAM, not plain strawberry?), but it’s the specials you gotta watch out for. My first taste of Oddfellows years ago was a scoop of Miso Cherry, a special that still brings me back. Oddfellows in DUMBO, Brooklyn is where I happened to try their fleeting special of Wasabi Chocolate Chip, which blew my mind as one of the best “wacky” flavors I’ve EVER tried. Oddfellows is really not afraid to GO THERE with the flavors, and if that’s your kind of circus, these are YOUR kind of monkeys.

4. Malai / 📍 268 Smith Street, 2025 Summer Pop-up at 9 Christopher Street

Drawing on South Asian flavors from founder Pooja Bavishi’s childhood, Malai has been the destination for some of the most unique, best ice cream NYC locals have been searching for since 2015. My friends and family have been following Malai from various pop-ups and to their Brooklyn shop for their ice cream treats, including Kulfi - ice cream bar popsicle treats - and their Gulab Jamun Ice Cream Cake is still held in high esteem at family gatherings. Their 2025 summer popup location on Christopher Street brought their sweet treats to the epicenter of culinary excellence in Manhattan, an easy stroll over from Washington Square Park! Ice cream connoisseurs such as myself are excited to see what the next ten years hold as Malai continues to grow!

On a hot day Downtown - or any day, really - you will likely find me & my husband at Mister Dips! I have been a loyal fan of their soft-serve since the days of their seasonal airstream trailer in Vale Park in Brooklyn. Now located in the Seaport District, they just might be the coolest spot downtown. Literally. It's ice cream. Get it? Their signature sundaes are solid, but the seasonal specials - like the dip cone in the shape of a Christmas tree for the holiday? - will keep you on your toes. That's if your socks aren't knocked off by their spicy cheese fries (yum) or their boozy milkshakes! 

2. Big Gay Ice Cream / 📍 various locations

Who remembers the summer when we all chased the Big Gay Ice Cream truck all over the city? As Sophia Petrillo would say, “Picture it: NYC, 2012” - Gosh, am I as old as the Golden Girls, whose pop-art portraits hang in this edgy, campy NYC must-visit ice cream joint? While Big Gay Ice Cream serves up cones and dishes in a variety of flavors, it was their signature salted-caramel-infused chocolate-dipped vanilla treat that created a viral food trend sensation in my late 20s (oh my, I AM a Golden Girl!). Foodies simply MUST visit and see what all the fuss was about! 

3. Glace / 📍 1266 Madison Ave, truck at Rockefeller Plaza

Speaking of viral food trends, I have been seeing Glace EVERYWHERE on social media. Boasting innovative and sophisticated sundaes that are ALL gluten free, you know I had to go there… on my BIRTHDAY! The allure of the Passionfruit Merengue soft serve sundae was too strong to be denied. Decadent and tart, this was a satisfyingly sweet and refreshing summer treat, as bright as the summer sun itself. This might be emerging as the best ice cream NYC has seen in recent years!

1. Venchi  / 📍 various locations

Venchi is my go-to for indulgent chocolates, so you know their gelato selection does not disappoint. Outstanding in both richness of texture and boldness of flavor, a small scoop packs a big bite! I’m a fan of anything Venchi does in a pistachio flavor, and most stores offer both regular and dairy-free versions of my go-to flavor. And while you're there, you might as well scoop up some chocolate from, ahem, North America's largest chocolate waterfall as well!

2. Amorino Gelato / 📍 various locations

This rose, by any other name, would TASTE as sweet. Yes, Amorino Gelato is famous for serving their signature frozen dessert in the shape of a blooming rose, but it is so much better than that! They use only naturally derived flavors, no artificial coloring, and all of their gelato and sorbetto is 100% gluten free. Talk about natural beauty! To top it off - literally - Amorino's signature move is the option to add a macaron to the center of your blooming rose, for an extra hit of sweetness and crunch! Don’t forget to try their affogato, either!

When you spot a summer pop-up from La Newyorkina, RUN dont walk! In past seasons, they have been spotted on The Highline, and foodie insiders can find their paletas for sale at Mijo inside Market 57. Their brick-and-mortar shop in Red Hook is a reliable spot to get the most flavorful, innovative paletas in NYC - but if you ask my husband, you gotta go with classic strawberry!

2. Grace Street Coffee and Desserts / 📍 17 West 32nd Street

Unquestionably, Grace Street is THE destination in NYC for Shaved Snow - those piled-high, silken ribbons of shaved ice topped with fruit, condensed milk, crumbled cookies, anything you can imagine! Big enough to share (or NOT!), the decadent yet refreshing mountains of frozen confection are great to bring the group together around on a hot summer night - or to post to the feed for brag-worthy status. If you feel daunted just looking at the towering shaved snow and prefer something more bite-sized, for what it’s worth, my favorite mochi in all of NYC comes from Grace Street Coffee and Desserts. 

3. Butterfield Market Fro-Yo Window / 📍 various locations

After cooling off in Central Park or by strolling the air-conditioned halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a trip through Butterfield Market’s Upper East Side Walk-Thru Fro-Yo window is a MUST. Offering a short list of flavors, this spot gets a shoutout from me because the portion sizes are SO GENEROUS for the price. Seriously. On Memorial Day, I split a “small” dish with my husband, and we struggled to finish it. Though their options and flavors are limited, they do occasionally roll out special toppings (olive oil? I’m in!). Let’s be honest: sometimes you just need a GIANT dish of frozen yogurt for a couple bucks, and that’s where this spot is my hero.

With plenty of rinks to choose from all over town, the view - and the vibe - is up to you! Will you go for the classic skate at Rockefeller Center, beneath America’s Christmas Tree? Christmas Markets

One of my favorite Christmas things to do in NYC is visit the Winter Village at Bryant Park. I find the best, most unique gifts at the Holiday Shops, and some of my favorite food vendors at the food stalls! The Union Square Holiday Market was named the Best Holiday Market in America in 2023, and at least once a year, I find that “they’re gonna flip out when they open this” gift made by one of the creative artisans. At the southwest corner of Central Park is the Columbus Circle Holiday Market, a newer addition to the NYC holiday market scene. While you’re snapping pics of the annual Macy’s holiday window display, swing by the Macy’s Holiday Square! Too chilly for outdoor markets? Swing by Grand Central Terminal for their Holiday Fair, located in Vanderbilt Hall - just a short walk away from the Holiday train display inside the Transit Museum outpost inside the GCT (another holiday must-see of mine!)

Christmas Bars

‘Tis the season to eat, drink, and be merry! While you’re ticking Christmas things to do in NYC off your list, make time to gather with friends and raise a glass at one of NYC’s opulently and festively adorned bars! Lillie’s Victorian Establishment (Union Square location) goes baubles-to-the-wall in Victorian style to capture the Dickensian holiday spirit! Be sure to book in advance for Jingle Jangle at The Dead Rabbit (FiDi), a three-story kitschy vintage Christmas experience! Rolf’s German Restaurant (Gramercy) has established itself as the most festive restaurant in NYC, not only will you want to book ahead, you’ll wanna take lots of pictures! Nobody paints the town red like Pete’s Tavern (NoMad), with their vibrant glowing lights display above the bar. Any of these spots will help you put the “spirit” in “holiday spirit”! 

The Rockettes Christmas Spectacular

What could be more New York, and what could be more Christmassy, than the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall? The first Christmas Spectacular hit the Radio City Music Hall stage in 1933, and almost a hundred years later, the show continues to grow in spectacularity! If that’s not a word, it needs to be one, because none other can describe this show. Though it’s changed through the years, the beloved “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” marches on, as does the “Living Nativity” - yes, the one that features live animals on stage!

New York Cultural Institutions Celebrate the Holidays

Every year, I visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Christmas Tree and Neopolitan Baroque Crèche, adorned with antique angels. It’s a favorite of mine every year, along with a mandatory visit to the American Museum of Natural History to see that year’s Origami Tree, festooned with over 1,000 folded paper creatures following the annual theme (for 2025, it’s “New Beginnings”). Lightscape at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden returns once again, to light up the night with wonder and awe. For those who want a calmer, more nostalgic holiday activity, The New York Botanic Garden annual Holiday Train Show even offers sensory-friendly mornings for quiet enjoyment of the model train exhibit with less overwhelm.

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights

Finally, my absolute favorite holiday tradition - and my personal Number One Must-Do of all the Christmas things to do in NYC - the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights! The neighborhood’s tradition of decorating every available inch of their homes with lights, inflatables, and projections was started over 30 years ago by Lucy Spata, resident of 84th Street. For me, it just isn’t Christmas unless I’ve bundled up and made the trek out to Dyker Heights. For those with a sweet tooth looking to start the tradition, you can borrow mine: first, stop in at Tasty Pastry Shoppe on your walk over from the D train for a cup of hot chocolate and a box of cookies to munch as you peruse the neighborhood (don’t sleep on those pecan sandies)! Then, on your way BACK to the D train, go BACK to Tasty Pastry Shoppe for treats to last the ride home! 

Rockefeller Center & Fifth Avenue Windows

Kevin McCallister knows what’s up: the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is the true meaning of Christmas in NYC. Erik Pauze is the man behind the magic: he starts scouting Norway Spruces years in advance to see if they could fit the bill for America’s Christmas tree. After the holiday season, after it has appeared in thousands of tree-selfies from locals and visitors alike, the tree is donated to Habitat for Humanity and its lumber is used to build homes for those in need. As if we needed another reason to love the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree! My hot tip is to visit the tree by taking a stroll down Fifth Avenue, past the annual stunning window displays and decorations up and down the commercial center.

Rolf’s German Restaurant / 281 3rd Avenue

Not only is Rolf’s German Restaurant well-known for its German cuisine, it might just be Instagram-famous as New York City’s most aesthetic restaurant! Known to decorate for the holidays with over-the-top baubles and lights displays, a glass of Glûhwein at Rolf’s is a Christmas tradition for many New Yorkers. The menu includes a variety of wursts - that’s sausage! - to accompany your German beer, wine, or Schnapps. Classic German cuisine includes schnitzel: a pounded-thin and breaded cut of meat, spätzle: egg noodle or small dumplings seasoned with nutmeg, and the absolute best: German potato salad! Every salad is better with potatoes, I believe.

Hoffbräu Bierhaus NYC / 712 Third Avenue

NYC’s very own branch of Munich’s Hoffbräu Bierhaus is just a short walk from Grand Central Station, but a complete departure from the ordinary. While you’re making new friends sharing a mini keg at the welcoming communal tables, pass around a plate of Frikadellen - German-style pork and beef meatballs in gravy, or split the massive Pretzel Party Platter, which includes biercheese and chips, schnitzel fingers, and sausages. There are even vegan and gluten free options to enjoy! That’s some real German hospitality!

Loreley Restaurant & Biergarten / 7 Rivington Street

What’s more iconic than a beer garden? How about a year-round, tented, heated, seasonally-decorated beer garden! While some enjoy cozying up to German cuisine in a dimly-lit, highly decorated spot, some enjoy the open air, and Loreley Beer Garden is for them! Alongside the menus of drinks, visitors can find a good variety of sandwiches, wursts, and schnitzel - including eggplant schnitzel for vegetarian guests!

Heidelberg Restaurant / 1648 Second Avenue

One of New York City’s oldest German restaurants, this Yorkville establishment dates back to 1939 - when one might hear the German language roll off the tongues of the Upper East Side residents as easily as yours can imagine the taste of the rich and succulent käesespätzle - oven-baked spätzle pasta smothered in Emmenthaller cheese. The pumpernickel, the potato pancakes, the sausages, the schnitzel! Whether year-round staples or special holiday treats, we’re big fans of Jewish food in NYC, and we love unraveling the history of rugelach, untwisting the tale of challah, and breaking the backstory of babka! 1. challah

Challah is a braided loaf of ceremonial significance to Ashkenazi Jews, native to Eastern Europe. It can be shaped into rounds for the High Holidays, to signify the return of the new year. Dating back to Austria or Southern Germany in the 15th Century, Fleishmann’s yeast products gave this tradition a rise following WWII, and today, Challah is enjoyed during Shabbat on Friday evenings - and often, as French Toast on weekend mornings!

2. hamantaschen 

Hamantaschen is a playful dessert cookie enjoyed during Purim. Shaped into a triangle to resemble the three-cornered hat worn by Haman, the villain of the Book of Esther, it is usually filled with sesame seeds, but can contain a variety of fruit fillings today. Originally called oznei Haman, or “Haman’s Ears,” these are eaten to celebrate Haman’s downfall following his unsuccessful attempt to exterminate Jews from the land of King Ahasuerus. 

3. babka

Babka is made by twisting a yeast-based dough, slathered with various fillings, into a loaf. Said to originate in 19th Century Poland, leftover challah dough can be used as the base, and the most common filling is sweet cinnamon. Breads Bakery in NYC used their innovative babka to be put on the culinary map: check them out for their unique “twist” on the traditional Jewish baked goods that are beloved among Ashkenazi Jews, New Yorkers, and Seinfeld fans alike.

4. sufganiyot

Sufganiyot are a Hannukkah tradition! Called ponchkis in Yiddish, sufganiyot are jelly-filled, sugar-dusted doughnuts fried in oil - to celebrate the miracle of the oil lasting for eight days. The word sufganiyoh is the popular term, believed to mean “spongy,” a reference to the plush and chewy texture of these traditional treats.

5. rugelach

Rugelach is a tradition believed to be traced back to Medieval Poland. The little twists can be filled with nuts, chocolate, fruit preserves, even Nutella! While common on Ashkenazi tables during holidays and celebrations, these little horn-shaped pastries made the big time in the 90s when none other than Julia Child showed Americans how to make them on TV!

6. apple cake

Apple cake for Rosh Hashannah is traditionally made without dairy, so it can be eaten during the same meal as meat or dairy meals. A variety of recipes substitute oils or even orange juice for moisture to replace butter, and every creative alternative is a special family tradition! Apples and honey represent sweetness for the New Year, so a cake studded with apples is the perfect fresh and seasonal treat, as apples reach peak sweetness in the fall. Here in the Big Apple, I look forward to the gluten-free apple cakes at By The Way Bakery every year!

7. macaroons

Macaroons originate from the mingling of medieval Arabic and Italian culinary cultures, but are a modern-day Passover staple. They crossed over into Jewish tradition in 1871, first appearing in Esther Levy’s Jewish Cookery Book, which suggested both almond and dried sweetened coconut flavors for macaroons. These are eaten on Passover because they do not contain dairy or flour, so they are kosher to eat alongside meat and compliant with the Passover rules banning flour.

8. mandelbrot

Mandelbrot or “Mandel bread” is often likened to biscotti. Meaning “almond bread,” the crunchy biscuits can be seasoned with dried fruit, nuts, or chocolate, but the traditional almonds are the most common, of course! The baking process is similar to biscotti - dough is shaped into long loaves, baked until golden brown at the edges, then sliced into long, thin slices and baked once more to be extra crispy.

9. matzah

Matzo or Matzah is over 4,000 years old in its origins, but every Passover, you will find boxes of all varieties lining grocery store shelves! That is because Passover commemorates the flight from Egypt which was made in such haste, that there was no time to let the bread rise. Hence, the consumption of unleavened bread is tradition during Passover, and the consumption of chametz - leavening agents or grains which are self-leavening - is forbidden. Though it is rooted in ancient tradition, matzah is constantly being reimagined in inventive ways to keep traditions fresh! It has been ground into matzah meal to make Matzah Ball Soup, fried with eggs to make Matzah Brei, or covered in chocolate to make a sweet, crispy dessert.

The origin of Oktoberfest can be traced back to 1810, to the celebration of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Munich residents celebrated the royal wedding at a site called Theresienwiese, or “Therese’s Meadow.” The celebration grounds in Munich are still called the Wiesen, and the locals will greet each other during Oktoberfest with the phrase “Auf geht’s zur Wiesn!”, translating to “Let’s go to the Wiesn!”

Oktoberfest traditionally opens with a parade, before the Mayor of Munich taps the first keg and announces “It is tapped!” Revelers also take part in Masskrugstemmen, or Steinholding, the unofficial sport of Oktoberfest. Participants attempt to hold a full one-liter beer stein with an outstretched arm for as long as they can. Impressive!

With locations near all the major tourist sites, and a range of options for customization, this bagel spot is convenient and easy to check off on your whirlwind, action-packed NYC vacation.

It’s bright. It’s colorful. It’s HIGHLY controversial. However, the Rainbow Bagel took NYC by storm for a reason: because as much as we cling to tradition, we are as easily wooed by innovation. While Zucker’s and Sadelle’s offer a couple flavors of gluten-free bagels alongside their gluteny variety, at MB&B, it’s ALL gluten-free - including their rotating selection of classic Jewish baked goods and desserts. I was thrilled to finally find a gluten-free version of my childhood go-to sesame bagel, and with the Jalapeño Cheddar cream cheese (which was pleasantly flavorful and not “too” spicy), it was a perfect handheld treat for walking around the city and running errands.

1. Dim Sum Go Go | Best Dim Sum in Chinatown for people with dietary restrictions

Dim Sum Go Go has been one of our favorite spots for good reason, all the dumplings are made FRESH! The classic Shumai and Hargow are great, but they also do innovative dishes such as roast duck spring rolls. Their staff is very helpful and their menu clearly marks which dishes can accomidate certain dietary restrictions. If you want to go to Golden Unicorn, get there early, because there will be a line. If you do, you’ll be rewarded by taking an elevator up to some of the best Dim Sum in NYC Chinatown. Aunties and uncles will by pushing carts packed with goodness and inviting you to try what they have to offer. Don’t worry about being assertive, it’s welcomed and underneath the sometimes “business-like” exterior are a group of friendly people looking to help. Their Shumai are to die for.

3. House of Joy | Best location for great dim sum

House of Joy is a relative newcomer, but it’s incredibly delicious. Located right on Pell Street in the heart of Chinatown, this dim sum palace boasts a large location, white table cloths, and a small army of dim sum carts. They do fried dishes very well here, and we really like the fried shrimp with taro balls and the sesame balls. The line might look long, but it moves fast. If you’re looking to dine in the heart of it all, we recommend House of Joy for some great dim sum in Chinatown NYC.

4. Jing Fong | Classic Dim Sum in NYC Chinatown for a reason

Jing Fong used to boast a golden escalator that took you up two stories to the biggest Manhattan dining room we have ever seen. They’ve since moved to a smaller location, but it’s still big for normal standard. Jing Fong is one of the more famous places on this list, and it’s for good reason. They nail the classics, have a variety of high-end Chinese dishes, and have a beautiful setting. Their dumplings are, of course, amazing, but try their sautéed Chinese broccoli. You’ve never had vegetables that tasted like this.

Parades, games, rides, and FOOD! All the Italian and Italian-American classics: sausage and pepper carts, towering Torrone, and cannolis as far as the eye can see. 

Oktoberfest Celebrations

From September into October, multiple venues across the city celebrate the Bavarian beer festival. From the Seaport to Midtown, we rounded up some of the Oktoberfest parties to attend, and some of our favorite German restaurants with special Oktoberfest menus. Jazz residencies 

As the weather gets chilly, there is no better time to cozy up to some hot jazz! Jazz is the indisputable soundtrack of NYC in the fall, and you can catch live performances from Robert Glasper’s Robtober residency at The Blue Note in Greenwich Village up to the perennial classic, Jazz at Lincoln Center. The Village Vanguard boasts an impressive lineup of performances this fall and is a bucket-list venue for jazz aficionados, but if you prefer something a little more avant garde, a crisp $20 bill (cash only!) will grant you entry to NYC legend John Zorn’s jazz club The Stone.

Dog Costume Parades

One of the most pup-ular events among locals are the Halloween Dog Costume Contests! The 35th Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade returns to NYC on October 19th! Registration is required to compete, but be forewarned - this event is VERY popular! The good news? Pumpkin Point at Governor’s Island

One of my personal favorite local events is Pumpkin Point on Governor’s Island! For the weekend of October 25th & 26th, visitors can pick a free pumpkin, attend free performances, even trick-or-treat on the island off the coast of southern Manhattan! Food and drink is available from local vendors, and I enjoy taking in the foliage of the island and perusing the exhibits in the surrounding galleries.

The Village Halloween Parade

Learn the thriller dance and roll along! Come to Greenwich Village in costume and marvel at the creativity and revelry of New York's most ghoulish and stylish residents. The 52nd annual Village Halloween Parade returns to NYC on October 31st at 7:00pm and is a *must attend* event in NYC in the fall! Hot Tip: stake out a spot near the Jefferson Market Library on 6th Ave to see the huge puppet show on the clock tower! SpoOoOoky!

The New York City Marathon

Cheer on our city along the route of the NYC marathon! On Sunday, November 1st, 2026, tens of thousands of runners will take to the streets (and bridges) of all five boroughs for the ultimate urban foot race. Make an encouraging sign, bring a cowbell or tambourine, and cheer on the runners who are raising awareness, raising money for a cause, or competing for athletic excellence. This is a bucket-list item, and the energy is absolutely infectious and uplifting! Maybe you’ll be inspired to run next year…?

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The final event of the fall is the one that officially kicks off the holiday season: the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! The Great Inflate of balloons the day before is free to attend from noon to 6 at 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue. For the main event, arriving earlier is better! Be sure to dress warmly and be prepared for crowds. Or, do what I like to do: sleep in, grab a thermos full of coffee, and linger down one of the side streets on the Upper West Side a ways back from the barriers.
