Let me just apologies in advance! We had a very US centric episode this week. To be honest, I just did not see a way out of that when covering the State of the Union. Hopefully you’ll forgive us, and still enjoy the show. And quite the show it is!

Speaking of outside the US coverage, this thread was recently started on the Unfilter subreddit, I’d particularly like to reach out to Unfilter Supporters to hear their thoughts:

Suggestion: an episode on the crazy web censoring we’re getting in the UK. : unfilter

I’d love to see/hear an episode on this. For those that don’t know, the UK government is trying to clean up the internet for children and getting it horribly wrong. Instead of just porn being blocked there’s now ‘questionable content’ which has included; The fedora project website, Amnesty international website, sex education and gay/lesbian community websites and today the Jquery CDN that host the libraries, breaking a lot of websites.

It’s an interesting topic and we’re getting some horror stories. Be nice to see the views of the sys admin in all of this.

A lot of our supporters are outside the US, so this is something on my mind quite a bit. My general take is to try and document the US’s response to world events. I figure that’s my core strength, and it gives you outside the US perspective you can count on. But I don’t want to loose focus on the events that take place outside the US. And our subreddit is a great spot to help push content in that direction.

We’ll be back next week with a standard format show, but these live events are a ton of fun. I was looking forward to this all day, and I think we’ll plan to do more. These one off episodes are fun for us, and keep things fresh and challenging for us.

As the Unfilter Supporter base continues to grow, my goal would be to create these one-off live event shows when something big is happening. I’d love to get to the point where when a big event is happening, you can safely assume you can tune into jblive.tv and see Unfilter covering it.

Assuming our supporter base keeps growing, the goal immediately following that would be also still producing a standard format show, that would be separate from the live event show. Essentially giving us the best of both worlds. That’s not possible today due to resources and time, but the future could hold good things!

It’s hard to remove our selves from the situation and look at Obama’s NSA “reform” speech from a totally new perspective. Would it sound convincing? Would it sound like he was pushing for real change? I don’t think so. I think it fails the basic logic test. And that’s just part of what we covered in today’s Unfilter.

It’s been a busy week for Obama and the NSA, and the attack dogs are out against Snowden trying to change the dialog to another totally unproductive conversation and “debate”.

Neutered Net Neutrality | Unfilter 81 Supporters Show

Not a great week for the net, but thankfully things might not be as bad as you’ve read. They’re not great ether though. It was in the back of my mind that Verizon was challenging the regulations placed on their industry.

For some reason, about 10 minutes into the show Chase decided he wants to stand and do the show. At first, because I’m running the mixer and the clips I figured I’d stay sitting. But then it became really awkward to look up at him all the time when we were getting into a discussion.

So after a few minutes (during a clip) I muted my mic, and stood up and repositioned the mic to accommodate. You can tell during the show because I have to go off mic a fews times to back up clips, but it was really kinda nice. Kept the energy level up this episode I thought.

By enforcing net neutrality, the court found, the agency was imposing rules that didn’t apply to carriers. But in a sign of pent-up reform pressure on Capitol Hill, two measures dealing with the NSA were quietly included in the 1,600-page spending text with relatively little fanfare – or opposition from the White House – and are likely to pave the way for more binding legislative efforts once President Barack Obama outlines his own response to the surveillance scandal on Friday.

The first, and more unexpected, of the two NSA budget measures directs the agency to reveal “the number of records acquired by the NSA as part of its bulk telephone metadata program” over a five-year period, and to turn the data over to the House and Senate judiciary committees within 90 days.

“This report shall provide, to the greatest extent possible, an estimate of the number of records of United States citizens that have been acquired by NSA as part of the bulk telephone metadata program and the number of such records that have been reviewed by NSA personnel in response to a query,” it demands.

It is also calls for more information on the vexed question of how helpful such metadata has been in foiling terror plots, something that both NSA critics and Obama’s own review panel say has been greatly exaggerated.

The report should be “unclassified to the greatest extent possible and with a classified annex if necessary, listing terrorist activities that were disrupted, in whole or in part, with the aid of information obtained through NSA’s telephone metadata program and whether this information could have been promptly obtained by other means”, says the budget text.

However, the demand for fresh NSA disclosure is contained in an introduction to the budget bill rather than the main text of the legislation and, according to congressional staff, is thought likely to have an advisory effect rather than carry the full weight of law.

I think one of our best clips this week was one played only in the supporters show, I really enjoy the mix of music and casual nature of the supporters show. Unfilter is BACK! Well, at least half of it! Chase will be back next week with the CES plague in tow I am sure! ;)

With Chase away the mice will play, so I took the opportunity to cover a story we’ve been on since the moment it was born, Cannabis legalization in Colorado and Washington. We’re now one week in, and I felt like it was a good time to take a look at where we are at, and have a bit of a debate around the merits of the topic.

But that doesn’t stop the NSA, I know some of this stuff is old news to our supporters, but I had to cover a few bits of important info that took place during our break. But really the meat is in our supporters only shows, if you’ve not listened to those yet, they are in the supporters sync labeled as UFS.

2014 is already off to a bang of JB, I’ll be sharing more about that in the future. But the tl;dr version is: Your support matters more then ever, and I’m always open to new ways to increase the value our supporters get. So if you have ideas for supporters benefits, don’t be shy!

I’ve started a very rough outline of what we already know 2014 is going to bring topic wise for the Unfilter show. And I’m almost positive we’ll toss most of it out the window as major stories break. But one thing was clear to me, we certainly have a much better idea of the major players in DC and the private sector to watch then we did at the start of last year. I really feel like the show is geared up and ready to capture whatever happens.

NSA Panel Member Recommends Increased Data Collection

Michael Morell, the former acting director of the CIA and a member of President Obama’s task force on surveillance, said in an interview on Sunday that a controversial telephone data-collection program conducted by the National Security Agency should be expanded to include emails. He also said the program, far from being unnecessary, could prevent the next 9/11.

President Obama Says He’ll Rein In NSA… Then Proceeds To Praise And Defend Everything They’ve Done

In an interview on Thursday, President Obama said that he’s going to propose some “self-restraint on the NSA” and to “initiate some reforms that can give people more confidence.” Of course, he’s the boss of the NSA. He doesn’t need to “propose” anything – he can order them to stop. Furthermore, it appears that nearly everything else he talked about was supporting the actions of the NSA, so it’s a bit difficult to take seriously this idea that there will be any significant decrease in NSA activity.

NSA Review Panel’s Report Does Not Recommend Any Major Curbing Of Government Surveillance

It also doesn’t specifically mention anything about curbing the bulk collection of e-mail, instant messages or other systems data, information of which is much more valuable than telephony meta-data. So really, the report is not suggesting any government surveillance or data collection be stopped. It is instead suggesting that they change the method of how one type of information is collected and stored.

In between its coverage of Benghazi and the N.S.A., “60 Minutes” drew criticism for letting Amazon promote a drone delivery program that is years from actually happening, if it happens at all. It was a fanciful look at the commercial future, though Charlie Rose, the reporter, also asked Jeff Bezos, the chief executive of Amazon, some tough questions: whether providing cloud services to the C.I.A. was a conflict, and whether its “ruthless” pursuit of market share was fair.

It’s been the perfect year for a show like ours, I’m really thankful that I’ve had a place to share my thoughts, discuss what we find, and share our ideas with like minded people all around the world. This small group of people keeps us going every week, and helps bring a little peace of mind to thousands of people who no longer have to feel like their crazy.

The old media empires are still around, and rich. But their conversation and message is hollow and manipulative. So many of us see it now, and shows like Unfilter will be there as more people look for something beyond the official talking points.

We might even find out selves years from now looking back at these episodes asa living documentary of what was going on during these times. And I think that might just be invaluable.

I’m collecting clips already for next week’s show, and I can’t believe we are on the doorstep of 2014. It’s probably just me at this point, but the NSA stories still feel new and interesting.

Watching the news feeds has been really interesting today, as the media outlets have been responding to the releasing of the Sandy Hook 911 Calls. It’s been quite a clown show watching them fall over-them selves to talk about their journalistic integrity, and how their never going to air them. Only hours later of course they do play them.

I asked him about the NSA disclosure that bothered him most. He described how, in the name of defending the country, the hackers of the NSA are committing a cardinal digital sin: weakening the Internet by targeting cryptography and other security measures that make the Internet secure for the bad guys and for everyone else too.

Credit goes to my wife Angela this week for convincing me to go forward with our JFK episode. Until last night I hadn’t decided to go through with it. The assassination of JFK has fascinated me for a long time, and about a year ago I really started to dig take an interest in some of the better books on the topic.

But it’s too big of a story, the rabbit hole never ends, and the chance of making everyone listening satisfied is slim.

I deiced to focus on a few key parts of the assassination. The context of the events in the years and months leading up to the assassinations, key weak points of the official story, and eye whiteness testimony that raises valid questions.

Weeks ago, really, maybe even months, I noticed an up-tick in the JFK stories on mainstream media. I realized quickly that they were going to pump the 50th anniversary for everything it’s worth, and use it as an opportunity to re-sell a new generation on the Warren commission story. Once again lacking in real discussion, even when under the pretense of “busting myths”, asking the hard “questions”, the conversations are so heavily skewed to the establishment.

I’ve created a living archive of some of the interesting media I’ve come across during my research. For our supporters I’m giving out read/write access. These clips represent many hours of work, so please don’t delete them. I welcome organization, annotations, and any additional clips (notes, audio, graphics, text) you might have to add value to the archive.

I’ll probably take a break from this story, but I expect I’ll add things from time to time to the archive. The Unfilter back-catalog will continue to be played, and for years people will just be downloading episode 76 for the first time, and I’d like to think the archive will be even more revenant.

Thirty-three years ago, Gerald R. Ford changed ever so slightly – the Warren Commission’s main sentence on the place where a bullet entered President John F. Kennedy’s body when he was killed in Dallas.

It’s so much fun to do this show in studio with Chase, it’s a freaking hoot when Mr. Clinton stops by. You have to stay tuned until the end of this week’s supporter show for a good laugh.

As I write this episode 75 of Unfilter is cooking in the various format encoders, the supporters show is being leveled, and the supports source is syncing.

I forgot to mention last week, in the pre-show folder there is a great video on the money problem in DC.

I’m brain storming a way we could collaborate on collecting clips on something major. IE some huge story breaks, we toss up a read/write shared folder that people (who want to) start contributing clips, notes, pdfs, etc too. Nothing firm yet, but its something I might start trying out with a few folks.

This week I was really worried about the topic, I want every Unfitler to be the one that gets people watching every week. And that puts pressure on me to come up with something folks will really respond too. But as I looked at the news events of the week, I knew the story our Unfilter supporters needed to hear about was the TPP. We’ve been meaning to dig into it, and this week was the right time.

I think we pulled off a decent episode cover a trade agreement at least some what interesting, and informational. If you had told me a year or so ago I’d be saying that, I’d probably have laughed at you.

Unfilter has always provided really rewarding challenges. This show tests me in ways no other show ever has, it can really rock me to my core, and pulling off a win after that can feel great.

Less Than 20% Of Americans Believe That There’s Adequate Oversight Of The NSA

A recent poll from YouGov found that only 17% of people believe that Congress provides “adequate oversight” on the spying of Americans. A marginally better 20% (though, within the 4.6% margin of error, so meaningless difference really) felt that Congress provides adequate oversight of the NSA when it comes to collecting data on foreigners. Basically, that part of the NSA story just isn’t particularly believable in light of everything that’s come out. Oh, and people are paying attention to the news. A full 87% had heard something about the spying on foreign countries – with only 14% thinking that such a program has helped US interests abroad.

Sen. John McCain’s office says he’s not urging National Security Agency Director Gen. Keith Alexander to step down, even though a German magazine quoted the senator saying as much on Sunday.

Now this might be my Thai food induced comma talking, but I think Google is quite upset about this whole NSA tapping into their data centers thing! Now the real question is, did folks at Google already know? Ether way we got a fired up Eric Schmidt this week.

NSA vs The World | Unfilter 73

You sure can learn a lot, from some unsecured power point presentations stored on an intranet server. Just ask my buddy Ed.

This week I’m rolling out a new exclusive just for our supporters, basically the source code of our show. All the clips, assets, notes, etc that I store in each episodes “notes” folder. What’s in there will vary depending on episode, and now that I know I’m sharing it with our supporters I’d suspect you’ll see a lot more added over the coming weeks.

Mostly you’ll find what you’ve heard in the show, but often a little more.

I’m not totally sure what I expect the use for all these clips will be, its already nearly 3GB’s and growing, and that’s just the stuff since episode 54. I guess part of me might be hoping someone can use them for some good, or for informing someone else, or perhaps even putting together something that could be used in a future episode of Unfilter.

I know not everyone uses Bittorrent Sync, but it has a lot of advantages for distributing content like this. It’s almost the perfect tool really.

Broadcasting this week from our UAV control booth, it’s another edition of the Unfilter show!

This was one of those week’s where I was really struggling leading up to Wednesday morning to zero in on WTF our show was going to be about. I have a gut feeling for stories “good” enough to make it into the show, and wasn’t feeling what I’d been following so far.

But as I dug through all the recordings, clips, and surprisingly a Hong Kong news broadcast I realized these drone reports are kind of a big deal, and the start of a new wave of pressure and push back against the US’s drone policy.

We deiced to have a bit of fun and cover the final moments of the shutdown live in the Supporters Show this week. It certainly made for another long supporters show. As I write up this news letter, I’m watching a little Star Trek. You’ll forgive me, but it’s late and it helps get me through the late night. For you TOS fans you might remember “Day of the Dove” where a super power alien, I can’t remember their name, lets just call them the Kochs. They come in and arm both sides with ridiculous armatures, superficial hate, and a lot of hot air.

So there are always a few areas I regret missing on the Unfilter show, as you guys can probably imagine, the week between episodes there are a hundred things I want to bring up on the show, and I probably forget 70% of them. But the Koch brothers angle on these entire shutdown situation is something I have meant to get to for the last two weeks. So at least I can pass on to you, our supporters, a little more info:

The main issue with this on-going federal government shutdown is that it doesn’t go nearly far enough. It is comical that during this supposed crisis that some of the most expensive and hated government institutions like the Department of Homeland Security and others continue to function. We also see the U.S. military continuing to occupy foreign lands at great expense. It’s clearly become political theater, and the expense of some of those who have paid the greatest price for the US.

Shutdown Shenanigans | Unfilter 69 Supporters Show

Ok this one was a little rough, Chase was out… And I think I got about an hour of sleep last night. But even under those circumstances, the Unfilter show won’t shutdown!

Big show this week, lots to chew on and we had the opportunity to loop in a few perspectives from outside the US. A nice look at some of our shenanigans from the outside.

I never really got around to the media’s take on this entire shutdown. Boy oh boy have they rolled out the fancy graphics, new themes, and on locations “discussions” where they sit around in lawn chairs outside a DC building. What a joke. CNN wins the ridiculous badge for the week however. Their countdown really puts it over the top, they are determined to milk every drop out of this current drama.

One big topic this week we did not get to was the the shutdown of Silk Road, and the arrest of it’s main operator DPR. There is a great thread on r/bitcoin that covers the highlights from the report (which I’ve read):

The U.S. government in July obtained a search warrant demanding that Edward Snowden’s e-mail provider, Lavabit, turn over the private SSL keys that protected all web traffic to the site, according to to newly unsealed documents.

I almost feel like I say this every week - But this week felt historic. When I put “historic times” in the intro video, I really meant it. I hope these shows live on as a document of WTF was going on during these times. And that thought makes me even more appreciative of our supporters. It’s the Stupid Economy | Unfilter 68 Supporters Show

Episode 68 was new territory for us. I have been really wanting to get to this discussion since the start of the year, here we are now on the eve of Obamacare, Cruz is grandstanding for 2016, and a shutdown showdown looms. It seemed like now was the time.

At the end of it I told Chase I think we pulled it off better then I expected, and now when/if this topic comes up as our main topic again, we’ve laid down some good ground work for those discussions.

Gaming is to Blame | Unfilter 67 Supporters Show

Games are sick, and a bunch of kids! Right? Right guys? Oh wait. That’s a ridiculous stereotype on it’s face, that would never hold up to any logical scrutiny. Or at least you’d think so.

Another crazy week for the Unfilter show to cover, I never enjoy covering these shooting events. The gun topic is such a hot topic with passions that flair up on all sides. But to see the media industry turn their collective attack dogs on games, again… It was too much to stay quiet!

It wasn’t until about 3pm our time, so about 3 and half hours before the show starts, that I really clicked into what this episode was going to be about. It was after sifting through all the reports I had recorded, and clipping them down, that the messaging and trends really stood out. And I realized the media was back into a pattern, which I wanted to expose.

Syria seems to have cooled down from a US involvement standpoint.

There was an aspect to the Syria story we did not have time to cover in this week’s show. And that’s the new effort behind arming the rebels.

The idea has been under consideration since the August 21 chemical weapons attack outside Damascus, which the United States says was carried out by the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

“We have any number of options under development that could expand our support to the moderate opposition, but no decision has been taken at this point,” Joint Chiefs Chairman Martin Dempsey said when asked by reporters on Wednesday about the proposal.

And in what appears to be a rather hollow move to get back at the Russians:

In cold war style, US Senators have urged the Obama administration to freeze assets of three major Russian banks, ban their activities in the US, and deny employees’ entry into the country on the suspicion they are doing business with the Assad regime.

Well I guess we should have seen that one coming!

I’ll be honest, I was worried this was going to be the episode we covered the strike. It seemed like it was becoming a long shot, but the momentum was built and the war drums were banging.

But Vlad shook things up on Friday with a new deal. I knew right then what this episode would be about.

The CIA document, Foreign Policy says, states that US satellites in 1982 found “a probable CW [chemical weapon] nerve agent production facility and a storage facility… at the Dimona Sensitive Storage Area in the Negev Desert.” Furthermore, the document is claimed to have said, “Other CW production is believed to exist within a well-developed Israeli chemical industry.”

Our notions of risk are not absolute; they’re based more on how far they are from whatever we think of as “normal.” So as our perception of what is normal gets safer, the remaining risks stand out more. When your population is dying of the plague, protecting yourself from the occasional thief or murderer is a luxury. When everyone is healthy, it becomes a necessity.

So will Russia’s shipments of arms continue to Syria? Will we have an official word from Assad about a chemical weapons deal? Or is this going to be one slow painful delay after another?

Why so Syria | Unfilter 65 Supporters Show

We’re back, and just in time to watch WWIII kick off! Well, let’s hope not. But we (the US) are defiantly moving close to that line this week.

This will probably be a topic we get into a bit deeper next week, but there are major ramifications to action in Syria. We’re seeing more and more warnings that a strike will be met with a strong response. We’ll be watching for more of this for coverage in next week’s show.

I figured I’d toss a few great reads your way, this week it’s stuff only you supporters get (IE, sometimes I do my favorite links from the show notes.)

Assad refused to sign a proposed agreement with Qatar that would run a pipeline from the latter’s North field, contiguous with Iran’s South Pars field, through Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and on to Turkey, with a view to supply European markets - albeit crucially bypassing Russia. Assad’s rationale was “to protect the interests of [his] Russian ally, which is Europe’s top supplier of natural gas.”

Instead, the following year, Assad pursued negotiations for an alternative $10 billion pipeline plan with Iran, across Iraq to Syria, that would also potentially allow Iran to supply gas to Europe from its South Pars field shared with Qatar. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project was signed in July 2012 - just as Syria’s civil war was spreading to Damascus and Aleppo - and earlier this year Iraq signed aframework agreement for construction of the gas pipelines.

The Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline plan was a “direct slap in the face” to Qatar’s plans. No wonder Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan, in a failed attempt to bribe Russia to switch sides, told President Vladmir Putin that “whatever regime comes after” Assad, it will be “completely” in Saudi Arabia’s hands and will “not sign any agreement allowing any Gulf country to transport its gas across Syria to Europe and compete with Russian gas exports”, according to diplomatic sources. When Putin refused, the Prince vowed military action.

And since I (for the sake of argument in the show capitulated to the assumption Assad used chemical weapons in the episode, here’s the other side:

So we basically have a single topic this week, because the scope of the coverage was so big.

Big week, and I have a strong feeling we have some big stories still about to hit. I’m glad I decided against recording this episode on Friday of last week and pushed the recording until our regular Wednesday. That gave tons of time for news to break, and the politicians to make jackasses out of them selves on the Sunday talk shows.

I can’t help but be reminded of the build up to war in Iraq, only this time around there is a hell of a lot more alternatives to the mainstream source of news.

Don’t miss a visit from President Clinton at the end of today’s Supporter’s show, he was in a rare mood and had me laughing so hard there might have even been tears.

Wednesdays are my big production day for Unfilter, we shoot Wednesday night so I live the show all day long, and then dump everything at the end of the day into the show. But I know the Manning verdict would be coming down today, but I was not expecting the NSA to declassify the court rulings. It was a double down Wednesday on the media clipping rig!

One of the clips we play during the supports show is about Obama warning we could be heading towards more economic troubles in the US. But its so quick they don’t give much info. Here’s a little more of what I found:

Obama warns of economic ‘bubble-and-bust mentality’

Obama this month spoke four times in five days of the need to avoid what he called “artificial bubbles,” even in an economy that’s growing at just a 1.7 percent rate and where employment and factory usage remain below precession highs.

“We have to turn the page on the bubble-and-bust mentality that created this mess,” he said in his Aug. 10 weekly radio address.

Obama’s cautionary notes call attention to the risk that the lessons of the financial crisis, which was spawned by a speculator-driven surge in asset values, will be forgotten, widening the income gap and undermining a broad-based recovery.

“Clearly, this is a growing concern both in the administration and at the Fed,” said Adam Posen, a former member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee.

But they seem to also be going to a lot of trouble to say there is no housing bubble. So.. What bubble are they worried about? Maybe that Bond bubble is starting to become an issue worthy of Obama’s attention?

And it’s hard not to look at this story without keeping this in mind:

Obama’s words of caution come as he decides who will replace Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, probably the most consequential economic decision of his second term.

Just because Obama takes sometime off, doesn’t mean Unfilter does! Well not yet… That’s coming in a couple weeks.

Last week I noticed CNN was ramping up the pro-weed talk, they’ve been doing it for months but this last week starting on Thursday they really starting laying it on thick. Not that I mind, but I am awfully suspicious.

So they got me, I watched Sanjay Gupta’s documentary, and I made sure to have my clipper armed. My wife took the kids out for the evening (last night) and I got to work. I hope the lighter topic will help folks who have felt a bit overwhelmed by the topics we’ve been focusing on lately.

So this is it, Obama has gone full Bush on us. All we are missing is a color coded terror alert system.

I could tell this week that this show has taken a toll on my co-host Mr. Chase. I can totally understand it too. As funny as it might seem, out of the recent weeks today's episode covered topics that continue to trouble me very deeply. I often find some encouragement, and motivation by the idea that we are helping folks understand what's going on every week to the best of our ability. It sounds silly, but for some reason it feels just a little noble. It's really a good dose of "helps you get out of bed in the morning".

Doing a show like this I've known I'm on borrowed time before the emotional realization of the depth of what I am covering hits me. The clinical approach only works for so long.

This week , that borrowed time ran out. I can't help but be deeply troubled by some of the stories we covered this week. Not because of what they expose, but because of what they represent. To me, it would appear we now live within a society that is systematically corrupt. At every level, in every regard, and in all branches.

Episode 62 will be one that stays with me for a long time.

The only light I see at the end of this tunnel is the growing audience Unfilter finds every week, and the fundamental support we get from you, our Unfilter supporters. Together we represent the longterm solution to the mass-distractions.

In NSA We Trust | Unfilter 61 Supporters Show

From the heckler section of Black Hat, it's this week's Unfilter's Supporters Show! We had fun this week with Chase's dad in studio, who I believe makes it a point of pride to ignore the news. He was shocked at some of the topics we covered today. With no idea of the scope and depth of the NSA's world wide surveillance. But he seemed to quickly understand the gravity of the situation as the show went on. I really enjoyed this show, because I feel like it brought so much of the NSA leaks into focus. This week's show notes has links to a lot of info, which I defiantly recommend you spend some time following up on. We're only able to fit so much into the show, and a look at that NSA PowerPoint is worth your time. Compared to the last two weeks, I was drowning in clips. Finally some meat to pull from those old media bones. I prolly tossed away some gems, but there comes a time when a Podcaster must focus in on the goal and press on with what he has clipped! I've recently taken some steps to add a bit of additional processing to our clips to bring their volume level more inline with Chase and my self. Hopefully if anything, you've noticed the clips don't require you to turn up the volume a touch to hear them fully, and best case is you've noticed nothing different at all. :) Thanks to those of you who sent me some feedback on the length of the supporters show, the response was basically split right down the middle. Some of you like it as long as we can make it (within reason) and some of you prefer we keep it a bit tighter so it fits within a single commute. This week we went a bit long, but we'll probably find a good middle ground here in the coming weeks. It'll be an organic fit, that I think we settle into. Thanks for keeping us on the air another week, the next few years are going to be really something. I'm looking forward to staying on top of it every-single-week! New children, visiting family and lighting storms have all failed to stop us!

Detroit Out of Gas | Unfilter 60 Supporters Show

The contractions are slowing, we might have a false alarm.. At least for now. Which probably means a middle of the night/early morning baby. What am I talking about? As we started this week's episode of Unfilter, my wife Angela started having contractions, but she figured we probably had just enough time to record the episode, so we gave it a go.

TALK ABOUT A BUSY WEEK!

They've slowed down and she's asleep now, sorta the clam before the storm moment in the house. That means I have time to fire off this news letter and get Unfilter out the door.

How about that for some baby talk?

Busy week for law makers in DC too, though its getting zero coverage there is quite a bit being done this week. It'll be interesting to pick up on the threads in the next episode and see where things ended up.

One thing I don't have a good sense for is what the coverage of the events in Syria is like outside the US. I presume it's basically along the same lines that we get here in the states. But I wonder if perhaps things are stepped up a bit more here since we have the military industrial complex pushing for intervention. I'd love to hear feedback from you supporters outside the US on that.

We ran with Detroit in the title, but really the show covers a lot more ground this week. I think this episode the NSA story has transitioned into part of the overall ensemble, but it clear did not drive the episode.

The Zimmerman Distraction | Unfilter 59

Now I feel… A little dirty. Not gonna lie, sometimes slogging through the steaming pile of garbage that is the mainstream media can be very taxing. This week I questioned the very fundamentals of our society after being exposed to hours and hours of wall-to-wall dumb. But never fear kind supporter, I have persevered and emerged even STRONGER!

I’m a little worried about stepping into a flamewar this week, some of the topics we covered are likely to upset folks, but I trust our long time audience will understand Unfilter is an ongoing dialog, no single episode is the final word on anything.

This week I knew there was no way to avoid the Zimmerman trial stuff, but I was determined not to let it eat this episode, or even to let us get weighed down in the details of it. I don’t mean to say there are not issues to discuss around it, but on it’s face it simply does not seem like a story that fits for our show. Hopefully this will be the last we really hear about it, unless something breaks that fits into our shows focus.

Also: Super long supporters show this week, weighs in at a hefty 2hrs and 41 minutes. If you think that’s too much show, too long, let me know. That must be pushing the limits of some folks tubes/time?

I meant to make a warning in the official show, but just a reminder my wife could pop out a third kid any day, so stay tuned for possible schedule disruptions. We’ll try to keep it to a minimum, and keep everyone in the loop as much as we can!

Is it all about to break loose? You gotta figure Snowden won’t be held up much longer in that airport, he’s gotta make his next move soon. These last few weeks of Unfilter have witnessed some of the most fascinating events of my time unfold.

Every day I think of a new aspect this story introduces. Something we did not really get a chance to talk about today is the disparity between the leading political elite, and the people.

A majority of U.S. registered voters consider Edward Snowden a whistle-blower, not a traitor, and a plurality says government anti-terrorism efforts have gone too far in restricting civil liberties, a poll released today shows.

Fifty-five percent said Snowden was a whistle-blower in leaking details about top-secret U.S. programs that collect telephone and Internet data, in the survey

“The fact that there is little difference now along party lines about the overall anti-terrorism effort and civil liberties and about Snowden is in itself unusual in a country sharply divided along political lines about almost everything,”

Peter Brown, assistant director of Quinnipiac’s polling institute.

So while I think Chase is a bit more pessimistic these days, I find encouragement in those numbers. And the reaction to our coverage backs this up, we have more people downloading Unfitler then ever before, people want to know what the hell is going on.

The supporters of our show are what keep me going every week, I sit down after putting an episode together and round up all the new subscribers, check for messages from them, and get them setup in the supporters club. It’s very rewarding and charges fires me up for the show each week.

Obama Is Afraid Of You | Unfilter 57 Supporters Show

It's the 4th of July week here in the states, and that means funky schedules. This week we recorded early, to make room for the holiday and I'll admit it was tight. Right up to the moment we went on air, I was clipping and trimming news reports. I've gotten a lot of feedback that people are digging our coverage of the NSA leaks, Snowden man hunt, and all the fallout around it. Earlier in the week I was considering making the protest in Egypt our main focus this week, as it seems massive and historic. But frankly I'm just not happy with almost anyone else's coverage of whats going on. Some folks, on their own, do ok at moments. But the cross medium, cross-network meta analysis Unfilter excels at is exactly the right approach for a major topic like the NSA leaks. I expect big movement between now and next week's show. Time runs out for the whistleblower, and Egypt's military has taken over. Should be an interesting week. Just like in the past few weeks, the Supporters show is packed with great info and extra context for the main episode. Thanks for keeping us going, the show has never been stronger and it's thanks to your support that we show up every single week to make the best show possible!

Effectively creating a world-wide police state.

A big Russian Snowdenstorm this week! har har. ;)

I'm starting to feel like maybe we should ease up on the NSA/Snowden stories. But I could tell we had at least one more focused episode in us. We started and ended this week by covering stories outside of the NSA story, which is the begging of our transition back to our more regular format. I'm hoping down the road when we want to look back at this event, these episodes will provide a "set" that document the important bits that landed when the story broke.

It's been a very interesting process for me to focus in like we have. I've got a mini-NSA setup here in the Jupiter Broadcasting HQ where I have a clever little system that lets me collected the major network feeds via XM satellite radio.

I store those on a dedicated computer, that records all day (but not at night). I combine that system with a dragnet of news sites and forums.

In a lot of ways the previous 50 episodes were building the infrastructure to track major stories/events like this. One of the great things about the supporters show is it gives me a spot to put a lot of great clips that I hate to just toss. But unlike the NSA, I don't have petabytes of storage!

That's not totally true, the basic infrastructure I spent three months setting up before we launched the show. It was a personal challenge I charged my self with to complete for I "let my self" launch Unfilter. But like all production processes, it's been rapidly evolving with the show.

We'll be charged with focusing too much on Edward Snowden, and yet at the same time bitching that the media was doing the same thing. To this I will disagree. I stated my case at the end of the supporters show. Too bad only you guys will hear it!

Thanks again for supporting our show, it's been a lot of extra work these last couple weeks. But having this list grow every week is very gratifying. So THANK YOU!

Snowden is Snowed Under | Unfilter 55 Supporters Show

One of the things we don't talk about too often is why Unfilter is audio only: You catch more. When I was working through the clips earlier today, I noticed one of them had this ridiculous keyboard typing sound effect. The news sweetens all this stuff, and its a lot easier to catch when your only listening. It happens all the time, I clip something while watching the video stream... And then play it back in my audio editor, and catch something completely new. There's no denying it, tonight's episode had a laser focus. We probably could have done two shows this week, but resources are limited and so is time. I realized I wanted to bring the shows complete attention to an important issue that we're in a unique position to document. It's disgusting. The attempt to blow all this over, and divert attention to the leaker, instead of what was leaked is once again robbing the world of a fair discussion and debate on this. I'm outraged for our international audience, and my fellow Americans. Reading between the lines a bit, it would seem Clapper's lie that the NSA does not collect citizens data was a big motivator in Edward Snowden coming forward. I wonder if the recent testimonies will motivate another whistle blower. It would seem it's now or never to come forward, surely there must be others? A very big thank you, to you. Our supporters. I was reflecting over some of the stories Unfilter has covered in last year, so many big stories. This was the right time for a show like this, and it's thanks to you it's possible.

The NSA PRISM | Unfilter 54 Supporters Show

Fired up, ready to go! Now this has been a big week. Maybe one of the biggest this show has witnessed, amazing just after the year mark our show is now documenting a massively historic event, in real time, flitting out all the bullshit. This week Unfilter got a chance to do what it was born to for.

So much to cover, you know a few things are gonna fall through the cracks... Nothing too major. We had a story from CBS news about the US Gov making a stink about using gear built by China, because they full on suspect everything coming from there now. Nothing too new there, or surprising really. But I feel like it would have been a good punctuation mark to our PRISM coverage.

We had a great live crowd today, and the calls were a ton of fun. A great way to get pumped... err... I mean "fired up, ready to go" for the show! FBI Wants a Backdoor | Unfilter 53 Supporters Show

Almost no show this week, but that would never stand!

At least not as long as we can manage. Chase had some bad news this week after he was laid off from work on Monday, I offered to switch up the show this week so he could take some downtime, and I'd focus the show on clips and feedback. Sorta an off format episode.

But Chase is a champ, and wanted to keep the show on track for you guys. Before we had you as investors and supporting our show, we were starting to take more and more breaks. It had only happened a couple times, but it was starting to happen.

Keep you guys happy puts our priorities into focus, and keeps up motivated to producing content for you every week.

We ran a sale last week for Unfilter supporters, which I'd say was not very successful. We had a single sign up... Not a good indication that we are going to make it to 133.

So after thinking it through, we going to try an adjusted price, with a higher total goal of subs. I'm hopeful that we'll make this work, and we're only this far thanks to the 83 supporters we have now.

There were a few stories that fell off our radar this week, the IRS scandal moved into the supporters show, and we continue to track the media's coverage of SARS 2.0 in the supporters show as well.

China Loves to Cyber | Unfilter 52 Supporters Show

The one year mark brings a little reflection...

HUGE supporters show this week! We covered a lot of ground, a couple of stories have moved from the main show, into supporter-show-tracking mode. For you supporter n00bs, I will often shift stories into and out of the main show depending on relevant/important the update is. But a lot of weeks bigger stories have smaller updates in between the coverage on the main show (Cyber security, Syria, Bird Flu, AP Hacking, so on). This week is a great example of this.

Towards the end of this week's supporters show we share some of thoughts on possible future projects, and it got me thinking about how much this show has changed over the year it's been on the air.

We started with a panel show, and we worked at trying to get that format just right... But it never managed to end up where I wanted it, so we made some adjustments that I think have worked out for the better. I really like where the show is now, and if we could solve our issue of people finding the show, I think we'd have a hit on our hands.

For now Unfilter struggles, it's not our best performing show, and I don't suspect it ever will be. I'm ok with that, because I think the model we have built for funding this show elevates that issue. If we get to enough supporters.

As we sit at this one year mark and I look over our 52 episode run, it's undoubtedly because of the 80 people this email goes out to every Wednesday night. This group saved the show from the edge, and keeps us going.

I don't know if I can stress the impact of this, thousands of people have their lives Unfiltered every week because of this small group of 80. That makes a real difference in the word.

I'm hoping next week we'll have a new batch of supports this email will be reaching, and maybe, if things work out we'll be sitting here in another year once again getting our reflection on.

It's all you can eat, at the scandal cafe!

Despite the tragic storm in Oklahoma, the administration's IRS, DOJ, and CIA scandals raged on. Each has moved forward in an interesting twist, and each seems to be picking up steam. And we're so busy chasing these, we're barley talking about Benghazi these days.

But don't worry, we're still keeping an eye on it. As the show was on the air, the NYT posted an editorial asking the very questions I've been asking since this story broke, what was the full role of the CIA in Benghazi?

"The C.I.A. was the main American presence on the ground in Benghazi, had relationships with local groups and was supposed to have the best fix on what was going on. There are serious questions as to why the agency did not have a better handle on security and didn’t do a better job of vetting the local militia that was hired for protection."

Today's episode was a real effort, I had some meetings in the morning that pushed my start time to just after 10am. That was way too late, and I was polishing episode 51 right up until we went on air. I seem to be getting better and better and juggling cooking dinner, and last minute show prep!

I really had a hard time cutting a few stories, but in the end I'm quite happy with this week's episode. These stories are hyper domestic, and I try to stay very aware of that. But they are just too fascinating for us to pass up, and feel like they could possibly lead to some bigger stories.

We lost a few of our supporters this week.. That never feels great, but thanks to all of you who continue to support our show, and keep us on the air week after week.

I need a nap! But it sure was fun to go see the new Star Trek movie. And episode 50 is in the can, WOW!

The show has changed a lot over 50 episodes, and I think I'll try and spend a little time reflecting on that once we hit the big 52, the year mark.

Bit of a shorter show this wee, we had to hit the road a bit early because we were seeing Star Trek at the massive IMAX screen in Seattle. We got there a couple hours early, and there was still a monster line!

We had some fun this episode, of course I forgot a major point I wanted to make... Which I realized a few minutes after we stopped recording.

1 hour and 21 minutes? Wait. What? How the heck did that happen? And the supporters show was 1 hr long??

Would you believe that I was stressing out Tuesday, all day, even during Plan B and especially later in the night during SciByte I was stressing about what we would cover this week, would we have enough show.

But as I sat down and went into hunter/gather mode early this morning, the trends this episode would be following quickly started to emerge from the noise.

Unfilter is really a marathon in a lot of ways, I usually tend my news garden every day, with a specific focus on checking on items that might need clipping late at night, after any shows and the kids have gone to bed. Then Wednesday morning, at about 7am, I start the process of discovering what this week's episode is going to be.

Sometimes this is really obvious, when a big story breaks the job is clear. But a lot of times it involves building a huge stack of possible stories, then figuring out which build a narrative that's important, which are a distraction, and so on.

It strikes me the traditional big industrial media approach to a show like ours would be to have a staff of people doing this work... That realization brings with it a deep tinge of jealousy. But I also realize how disconnected that makes the hosts from their work. How can they really deeply understand what they are talking about, when it's all handed to them in a series of prompter bullet points a few minutes before they go on air? It's all hallow.

Every Wednesday I live this show, even now as I am writing this at 10:15pm I'm still working on this show. I'll be working on this show for at least another 45 minutes.

Sometimes early Wednesday mornings, when I'm not feeling up to the task, I remember that 76 people have voted with their monthly support. It's not so much the weight of coming though on what they rightfully deserve for supporting us, but it's the genuine appreciation that others recognize value in my hard work.

Bags of Cash | Unfilter 48 Supporters Show

So can we all just admit the CIA traffics in drugs still? What a big week, so much to cover, and so much we did not even get to, and tons of great stuff in the supporters show.

Thanks to you guys, we've hit 70 supporters. That puts us past the halfway mark to our goal, and we could not be happier!

I felt like we moved quite smoothly from topic to topic this week, and was surprised when I looked up at the clock and we were already over the hour mark.

The bags of cash story won't even be believed by a lot of our audience I bet... They'll claim we're just conspiracy theorists.

I'm more curious how our Syria coverage will be taken. I feel like it's quite different then the main stream narrative, and the further we go from that, the more crap we get.

I think some will accuse us of just cooking a lot of conspiracy bacon, but I prefer to look at it more like having an open and honest conversation, kicking around ideas, and rationally debating why something could or could not be. I don't see any harm in it, simply feels like a healthy intellectual exercise. But as this week's episode demonstrates, MSNBC does not feel the same and they're doing their best to make as anti-intellectual as possible. Ironic.

I always find my self right about now remembering the things I forgot to mention in the show... Like the dramatic expansion of land the opium farms have seen in Afghanistan. How that was only possible thanks to the buying off of government officials in Afghanistan. I don't have my notes handy any more, but the growth number is really something outstanding. A minor point on it's own, but when looked at against the dialog of the bags of cash, and Afghanistan's trajectory to become the supplier of 90% of the world's Heroin it plays an important part of the story.

There's always about four or so of those I really kick my self for.. Sometimes I think I should cut more stuff, to leave room to cover all the ground of every story. I constantly weigh that against fitting as much important information into every episode.

Just a note on the album art this week... It's a bit more abstract then I tend to go for. Usually my style is clear and direct. But a bag of cash just really did not visually fit what I wanted. So when I found this NATO officer patrolling an opium filed, I rolled the dice and hoped people would make the connection... I know, it's a long shot!

Sometimes it just clicks!

At least this week did. Watching the Boston Bomb run (that's what I like to call it at least...) live with about a dozen feeds at once was really something.

I remember feeling such a huge amount of relief after they found him, and captured him alive. I'm not sure if it's because I was so worried about the narrative that would stink of manufacturing if he was dead... Or if it was just that it all finally came to an end. Maybe it's little of all of the above.

I have a feeling a lot of you lived in my world this week, following the news very close with all the Boston stuff going on. My advise to you? Don't do it. Rots the brain! ;)

Whenever there is a huge topic like this, something always gets left out. Something gets forgotten, cut, or who knows what. But it always seems to happen.

There were defiantly a few points I wanted to make in the Boston Bombing story, as well as the CISPA and Benghazi stuff. But the truth is, these stories never just "go away". So there will be future opportunities to explorer a few of the points that were left on the table this week in the future.

Boston Bomb Job | Unfilter 46 Supporters Show

Holy cow.

What a week, and what a topic to try and break down and cover within the restrictions of an hour long show... Monday morning I had no idea what this week's Unfilter was going to be. But by the afternoon, there was no question.

I was sitting in my truck driving home from our local butcher shop when I turned on our local CBS affiliate, and realized something major had just happened.

I raced straight home and fired up my network feeds, and started recording everything I could.

Given the scope of the topics I felt like we nailed a lot of the important points this week, but we were a bit weak on the human element, and perhaps some other areas.

Overall though I think we hit all the major notes, and setup a good foundation to work from as the story develops over next few episodes which will be what matters in the long run.

In a year from now I think this episode will stand out as one that documented an important moment in history, and that's what drives me to stay up late, put in the long hours, and motivates me to keep pushing my self to make this show happen every week.

As this week's episode came into focus, I knew we'd want to pick some topics that might still have some legs the week after we recorded. Something told me the oil spill situation in Arkansas would still be rapidly developing and relevant by today. The gun debate also was cropped back up in this week's episode, and Chase is more fired up then ever.

This will be my first Wednesday in a long while where I'm not in "Unfilter cram" mode, and I'll be using my free time wisely! If you're around this afternoon (Weds 2pm PDT) you should stop by our live stream and check out a new show we'll be beta testing. Stay tuned for more on that soon!

Cyprus Gone Wild | Unfilter 43 Supporters Show

Putting together episode 43 I knew going in what my big story was.

This might sound a little hippy, but I have learned its very dangerous to sit down and prepare for an episode of Unfilter with preconceived notions of what's the big story for the week is. Because a lot of times, even by just osmosis it seems, we can pick up biases without fulling processing them. And I've learned that if I let those go, and start fresh every Wednesday morning (with an understanding of the threads I think are important, so I keep clips throughout the week) prepared to let the news and research take me where it needs to, wel end up with a great show.

This week however, not the case. I knew it was going to be Cyprus. What's happening over there is historic, it's the type of stuff we hear about from our teachers, read in old books, or vaguely remember old family members telling us stories about.

In the last two weeks I've collected over 80 news clips just on Cyprus, from as many sources that I can find. And one thing is for sure, this is historic and sets a tragic precedent.

Of course the rest of the world doesn't stop, so there was plenty of other threads to chase down, or follow up on. Again this week news agencies outside the US play a much heavier roll in our show.

Your support was more appreciated this week then you could know, it's a long hard week for me personally and it's very rewarding to know I have a group of people who support my work.

We had some technical issues this week, which we discover/talk about at the end of this week's supporter show. It leads us to a discussion about the value of the video version of the show.

Unfilter 42 Supporters Show

What a week our 42 episode has documented. Taking a look back 10 years after the start of the Iraq war with what we know now, it's hard not be extremely frustrated with what appears to be a organized campaign to mislead the American people, and the world.

I could have filled a few hours with clips just on that subject a lone... I realized I had an entire stash of clips that we never made it too (probably for the best, we ran long this week). After we got off air and I came across these clips, Chase and I sat around for almost another hour listening and watching them, shaking our heads. Soaking in what's happened over the last 10 years.

It was fun to watch bitcoin blow up this week, as someone who just casually dabbles in it, I feel like I have the advantage to have enough skin in the game to keep apprised, but not enough that it hurts when things go bad.

But after watching the events in Cyprus unfold this week, bitcoin seems less and less crazy to me.

We want to start covering more documentaries, videos, media, etc that we can suggest to people to give them more info and background on the topics we cover, any suggestions would be appreciated!

A few things we did not cover this week, for better or worse....

The possibility of Chemical weapons being used in Syria. This story is still developing, so I figured for time and accuracy I'd keep monitoring it.. But hold it for a week.

The other big story is Obama's trip to Israel. My impression is there is nothing of major substance to report on right now, but again, it's worth keeping an eye on.

Of course those are just a couple of the things that came up this week, every episode is just the tip of the iceberg, and represents hours and hours of refinement, clip collecting, researching and organizing.
