If there is one thing I really enjoy in life, it’s dreaming of becoming a princess! Haha. That’s why I never get tired of watching Disney princesses. When I was conceptualizing for my mash-up, I thought of the things I want in life, the things that make me happy. And obviously, one of the items on top of the list is “Disney Princesses.” My mash-up was really, really simple. I just wanted to convey that the Disney princesses should not only be admired by little girls. They are in fact women. Thus, I wanted them to be a reflection of what a woman is. A woman encounters challenges, experiences failures, finds love, and makes the society a better place. J

While doing the project, I think downloading the videos was the most difficult part. I lost all of my CD’s and DVD’s because of Ondoy. So I had to search Youtube for the clips I want. There were a lot of Disney movies in Youtube so I guess Disney allows some clips to be uploaded. I didn’t encounter any copyright issues except for Youtube’s notice:

No action is required on your part; however...

I still am not receiving any further notices and hopefully shall never encounter any problems regarding the video. My mash-up is actually a promotion for Disney and the song Firewoman so I think Disney and Sony should be thankful for that. :)

It cannot be denied the fact that a lot of Filipinos now are fond of multimedia and graphic arts and also doing remixes of media content and coming up with a new creative content out of the original. If there is one thing that I think is our advantage as Broadcast Communication degree candidates and students over those who just see Youtube as an avenue to generate income by simply making fun out of themselves, is the fact that we study and discuss Copyright, Copyright Issues and its implications to the videos or any content we produce.

Before coming up with my mash-up video, I spent 10 straight hours of watching videos and trying to make a mash-up with different themes from government to political economy, to feminism. But I just cannot see myself to those themes. As I watched Ryan Higa's channel and searched for more videos of Wong Fu Production, I saw this video of Ryan with a beginning title "My Youtube Story." That got my attention and I was surprised that it was one of the many videos uploaded for the 5th anniversary celebration of Youtube this year. So I watched similar videos and searched for other uniques stories and came with a topic.

I thought of a video mash-up that transverse the notion that we upload only to feature ourselves and forgetting to appreciate the technology that puts our videos and hosts it online which is Youtube. This video mash-up is dedicated to Youtube for making us entertained and happy.

After making the video, I sent a message to the original owners for their consent. And out of the nine producers, only one replied and he said that I can use his video as long as I do not earn profit from it. And so I told him that it is purely for academics, and he then allowed me to use his video.

I remember our professor Ma'am Data as she said in class that the videos we produce are projects and when we upload them in Youtube or in other hosts, there is a high possibility of it to be used by other individuals on the internet and to come up with a new idea out of your original product. Yes, I agree with Ma'am Data because it is true and has been proven already online that whatever project you do, so long as you properly cite your source, and as long as you have a valid input therein.

To keep you from not waiting, here is my last BC 148 video production, my mash-up. I hope you like it as I much as I did while doing it.

This video would not have been possible without the inspiration from my BC 148 Interactive Broadcasting class which is one of the factors that inculcated in me the love for Youtube. Thank you very much classmates and Ma'am Data!

The Mash Up- La la la

A student’s dream for a creative requirement would be that there would be no rules—just give a medium and the limits and that’s it. However this “dream” could also be the same dreaded “rule”. Given the mashup assignment in class, there was no specific theme required, it was all up to us individually. This perk was the cause of the long dragging concept thinking for the mash-up. Yes. It took me quite a while what I was going to mash-up. Being the Youtube enthusiast that I am, I have seen the best of mashups and the worst. From Transformers cross Mean Girls, to Amanda Seyfried movies—I thought of a good mashup concept. I even watched full length movies to see if the lines would fit. At last, I had a thing in mind. Next step is to get the scenes from the movie file themselves. And here starts the long hours of converting and the malfunction of files. The movies I have have an extension file of .avi. Surprisingly they can’t be read by iMovie, the software I was going to use for the editing. I tried converting them to something that my beloved iMovie can read, mpeg-4. So I did. I converted Dear John movie first, then it converted only the first 3 minutes of the movie. So scrap. I tried looking for scenes on Youtube, but there are only few scenes in the movie present. I did this process for a few movies and yes—wasted my time; I didn’t get to use any of the material. So I scrapped everything and started thinking of a mashup concept again – this time considering the availability of the videos I will be using. So I decided I’ll get all video’s from Youtube. Then I was watching David Choi one afternoon, then KABAAM. I had the idea! So there, that’s how my mashup came to be.

Sooo, I made this mash-up dedicated to two of the things I love the most about this year: INCEPTION and AXE OLD SPICE. This is just a 30-second video, using the audio from the Axe Old Spice commercial starring Isaiah Mustafa, and clips from the Inception trailer. Strutting!Leo + Hello!Ladies = love. :))

As human beings who like to create new things, we would love to assume that what we thought of and created is entirely original, because these are our ideas, our own concepts. But we have to face the fact that nothing is original anymore, and that there are laws that we have to abide by in order to function in this world, to maintain the "natural order of things" aka we don't get sued for copyright infringement, plagiarism, and the like. :)) That is why no matter how much I would like to claim that my idea for this mash-up is mine, the content I used aren't. And I would eventually have to credit the original "owners" of these content.

In a way, that thought is indeed stifling. Having to watch our backs and properly crediting is the way to go if we want to continue publishing and sharing on the net, because the owners to the rights of copyrighted material will sue us. Everything comes with a price these days. Harhar. :)) But then again, there are still a lot of people who get away with it. The intarnets is just too vast, and maybe someday, even I can get away with it. (But I can't really do that now lest I want the professor to kill me, jk. :P)

I made my very first mash-up project two days ago and it was really fun (though tiring) to do. I liked the way my classmates responded after I showed them the video I mashed up; "nakakakilig" was what they said.

It was a really different experience being the one who does the videos similar to what we see mostly in YouTube. I can't believe they have all the time they can allot for creating these kinds of project. I thought it was really amazing creating something like that. That's why even though mine didn't work out as planned, I still feel proud for my first mash-up project.

Yeah, it didn't work out as planned. I had technical problems such as wrong video formats thus, the original concept of my mash-up was not carried out by the end result. I had to resort to stock videos to be able to finish my project. But at least it ended up alright.

In terms of Copyright issues, I was really bothered after completing my project. I thought I might get sued for using the videos from YouTube. So I had this urge to put a disclaimer at the end of the video. I'm saying it here again, I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THESE VIDEOS AND THE MUSIC.

But all in all, creating mash-ups is fun! I'm looking forward to doing it again. Here's my project by the way if you want to check it out:

Hi guys! I am really sorry I couldn't come to class. My baby Drue was sick so I had to take care of him. Mash Up: Every Girl's Dream?

At last! After hours of working and waiting I’ve successfully uploaded my mash-up! To my surprise Youtube didn’t allow my efforts to be seen on the web. Apparently, FOX claims that they own some of the materials I used. Before uploading, I observed how other users get away with using the works of different “artists”. Many indicated the statement “I do not own anything” on the description box of the recreated work. But I don’t understand why it didn’t work in the case of my vid. I even typed my sources in the said box though it was already incorporated in the video.
Also, I saw that there are materials where users neglected to name their source or the original artists, especially for songs used in slide show presentations. But these uploads were not blocked. I assume that a lot of these users are not associated with the artists or copyright owners of the work. If this assumption is correct, does this mean that they had to pay the copyright just so they can come up with a 2 to 3 minuter that aids audience to learn the lyrics of songs or maybe even just for the heck of making one? I think this lopsided process of halting materials points us to the issue of ownership. A big company such as FOX could easily take measures to safe guard their products as well as the supposed profit they can obtain from it. But come on, I don’t expect to dig up anything monetary from their product.
Forming the rules and laws that will oversee the interaction in the cyber world is still a struggle for business industries, creators and the aspirants. But since there are those who stand that the rights they hold to their products when positioned in the tri-media be also translated in the same manner on the internet, wouldn’t it be rational to also carry the “privileges” granted for certain groups (and purposes) such as the academe to access and handle these materials for no or minimal cost?
The magnitude of what new media holds still seems too big for industries that loaded and matured with the aid of the first three media. Finding their place in this new playground is tough for many of them as the nature of this medium swaps the grasp of power.

Thanks to those who say that we are not the official campaign for UP Pep. We never claimed to be the official. If you ask the coach and members of the pep themselves, they never endorsed anything 'official' except for cheering classes to wear their PE shirts, which are white. So we're trying to drum up positivity and unity by ourselves. If you really want to officially be part of this UP spirit you would spread positivity in your own way, not by bringing others' efforts down. Thanks and see you at the CDC.

Welcome to the "Take it off for UP Pep" Campaign!

‘Take it off for UP Pep!’ is a campaign to support the UP Pep Squad in the 2010 UAAP Cheer Dance Competition. Its primary goal is to reborn the UP school spirit as we push our limits to wear our UP pride. “Take it off for UP Pep!’ is a liberating way to declare that the UP Maroons fight!

The campaign is a two-week long activity that starts on September 1 and ends on September 12, 2010 at the Araneta Coliseum during the UAAP Cheer Dance Competition.

There are three ways to join the campaign.

Option 1

Step 1. Take a picture or video of yourself or with your friends while chanting/hollering/singing/declaiming/zarzuela-ing the official UP cheer. Be as creative and enthusiastic as you want!

Step 2. Then send your videos and photos to upweberkads@gmail.com on or before September 4, 2010.
We will pick the most enthusiastic and zealous videos and photographs, then edit them together to create a viral video that will spread all over the Web!

Option 2

Step 1. Prepare your stunts and voices on September 2, starting at 1.30 pm.

Step 2. Look for the gorgeous guys and girls of the BC 148 class who will be wearing a maroon top. We will be visiting the colleges of CSSP, Business Administration, Engineering and Human Kinetics (we chose the colleges because they’re the crossroad buildings for every UP Diliman student). If you are in the vicinity, please do drop by!

Step 3. Approach us and ham it up for our cams. We promise not to edit anything out!

Option 3

Step 1. Watch the UAAP Cheer Dance Competition at the Araneta Coliseum on September 12.

Step 2. Join us in supporting the UP Pep by wearing a white shirt under a maroon top if you are a member of the general audience.
NOTE: UP Cheering classes and students are REQUIRED to wear their PE Shirt or a white Tshirt.

Step 3. Then TAKE OFF your maroon top and wave it in the air after the UP Pep finishes its routine. Show that white! Show our united UP spirit.
