Even though, it’s true that, starting out as a freelance writer (a newbie with no experience) can be a big challenge, and almost frightening, it’s possible to grow and succeed.

You can only get better with time, experience and learning from others, in your niche.

This is dependent on the fact that, you are ready to use some awesome and marketable tips to launch your career, and follow them through judiciously.

You know, that kind of dexterity and commitment a child deploys to devour ice-cream, should be the same attitude you put up, when it comes to establishing and growing your full time writing career.

Your success or failure depends entirely on these powerful tips.

Outlined below are 11 potent tips, which I strongly believe will help you in scaling up your freelance writing career astronomically.

Discipline – According to Wikipedia “Discipline is action or inaction that is regulated to be in accordance (or to achieve accord) with a particular system of governance”.

Personally, I term the word Discipline as a “process of applying a dedicated self-controlled mechanism over ones behaviour”

From the definition on Wikipedia, and my own little inexperienced definition, one can deduce that, it entails being dedicated to a particular behaviour (in this context, you being a freelance writer), and to achieve success in it.

As a writer, you need to be committed to this line of work, so that you can enjoy the benefits and experiences that comes with it.

You know, discipline helps to checkmate sloppiness, keeps you faithful to why you started writing in the first place and more importantly, keeps your "well of knowledge" filled with creative ideas on a daily basis.

Write Regularly (Even If You Are Just Starting) – Do you really want to improve as a writer?

Then write constantly.

To achieve growth or significant improvement as a freelance writer, it is paramount you develop the attitude of writing regularly.

It could be 3 to 4 articles per week. With consistency and regularity, in little to no time, you will be amazed with the qualities you have built up overtime, which can only be attributed to dedication and hard work.

A Tailor-Made Writing Style, That Works for You – Every single writer have a particular writing style, which they are used to, and has helped them considerably in no small way.

It takes time and patience, to find the writing style which matches your kind of personality, and which gives you the most comfort, and makes your writing flow without much fuss or stress.

Some writers like to start their writing with, heading of the article, head over to sub-headings, fill the body with contents, and then finish up with the conclusion.

Others might just start with only headings, conclusion, and then take their time, crafting contents for the body of the article.

I for one, applies the technique of body first, headings and then conclusion. While on some other occasions, I can just take it from the bottom, and work my way to the top.

Once I am done, I then take my time and stitch them altogether, the way it will come out best for my readers to enjoy.

It is advisable you sample other writers’ techniques, compare and sift through just few of them, and then finally coming up with the one, you believe will work best for you.

However, always be flexible and give room for adjustments, every now and then, when you feel you need to add something new.

Read And Research What You Are Writing About – To be successful as a freelance writer, you must be ready to read a lot, I mean a lot. Also, be ready to carry out extensive research.

Reading and research, are two vital elements, which you must employ on a daily basis, when you are creating contents.

When you read and research a lot, it helps to sharpen and broaden your mind, and opens you up to new ideas and relevant information, in your chosen niche.

Be Clear And Direct When Passing Your Message – As much as you can, always go straight to the point, as a freelance writer.

Your readers don’t have all the day in the world to be reading your articles. They have other things, they like doing as well, even if your writing is top notch.

Hit the nail on the head and, pass the message in a simple and clear language or grammar (You don’t have to be perfect in your grammar, actually nobody is perfect).

Just make it as concise and easy for people to understand the message, you are trying to pass across.

Do Away With Excuses – To improve as a freelance writer, you must do away with excuses and all the negative mentality of; I am new to writing or, I am scared to apply for jobs, I have little time on my hands, or even my English is bad.

The truth is, you cannot grow, if you don’t face all these challenges head on, when they come calling (Be prepared because, they will surely come) just be ready to surmount them, even though it won’t be easy.

You just have to do it. NO ONE will do it for you.

As quickly as I can, whenever I come across any quote, text or phrase which I feel will be of importance to my writing, I quickly jot down those key salient points, for crafting quality contents.

What makes you a better freelance writer, is preparing your mind every time, for little snippets of information creeping up on you, when reading from other authority writers, and then finding some hidden points in their articles.

You never can tell, when a little idea from them, will create a whole lot of ideas in your head.

Learn To Apply Paragraphs, Keep It Short – Articles are best enjoyed, when they are broken into paragraphs. It helps your readers flow seamlessly when reading and, it helps pass the core message why the article was crafted for in the first place.

Have A Rock-Solid Writing Routine – I did a comprehensive post about having a standardized writing routine, which you have fine-tuned to best suite your writing schedule and format.

Having created your own specific routine, it helps to improve your writing time, makes you look and feel fresh.

Read, Edit, Read Again – One key ingredient for improving as a writer, is to read your work and make adjustments, before hitting the publish button.

For example, in every exam, before a student submits his/her papers, due diligence must have been carried out i.e he/she goes through their answers thoroughly for mistakes and errors, so that it can be fixed before submission.

It’s the same principle that applies here. You MUST (emphasis on must) read what you have written down, read it through at least twice yourself. As a matter of fact, give a close friend or relation, to help you read it.

Ask them for their honest opinion either good or bad, and to point out areas you need to make corrections. Edit where necessary and then, go over it again, at least twice.

Ok, you just got up in the morning, say 7am and you have a deadline to meet with a client concerning a writing job you just secured.

And it seems, you don’t even have a set plan or concrete idea of how to go about the writing gig for the day. Already you are thinking, this day might just be bad.

Being a freelance writer has a lot of challenges attached to it (fun though, if it’s covering all your bills and some)…..it becomes tedious, time consuming and annoying, that is, if you don’t have a template or working schedule, on how to begin your day as a writer.

It gets annoying and confusing, when you just have to write; at that same time; check the latest buzz on AI technology; when to grab a cup of coffee, or even to check your emails?

At this point, you scream with anger, ready to break anything in site or take the easy way out, by quitting.

All these important tasks, which are piled up before you, are tasks which you can never run away from. They must all be surmounted, one way or the other.

And what is the better way of gaining the upper hand over all these monstrous ills, If it’s not through a well-organized schedule?

Personally, as a freelance writer, I have seen a tremendous growth in my writing skills, ever since I began to create my own writing plan, I have been able to maintain my writing blog……my concentration level has improved, I am not overworked and more importantly, I have more time on my hands to attend to other social aspects of my life.

1. A routine helps to prevent procrastination

Now, we have to be truthful here. How many times have we all said, we were/are going to do something at a particular time, only to give one or more excuses, why we couldn’t attend to the task at hand. The term for this constant shift of task is called PROCRASTINATION.

Procrastination has robbed most of us, good things at some certain time (I know I’ve lost some good things, due to procrastination)

However, since I read of other writers having a routine and applying it daily, I judiciously created mine. I can confidently say, I’ve completely eradicated that lazy part of me battling with procrastination, which in turn, has given me a clearer picture of how best to utilize my time appropriately.

2. Routines helps in organizing your day

We live in a busy world, and sometimes, it seems as though, everywhere and everyone is just blessed with the gift of being disorganized. I could still remember asking myself a long time ago “why can’t I just be organized?”

With the adoption of a writing schedule, it has made it easy for me, to know what tasks to attend to, at every point in time.

My tasks are not piling up, as it used to; I eat regularly and I’m also happy, which guarantees quality articles, and to a large extent……my energy level has improved a lot.

Also, I now have valuable time on my hands, to do more research on being a better writer, and fortunately, I feel very comfortable about myself, since I don’t have to be under any undue stress, trying to figure out, what the day has in store for me.

3. It helps to prioritize other tasks, aside writing.

It is somewhat dangerous and risky for a writer, just to dedicate all of his/her attention, just only on writing and nothing else.

Agreed, writing is a serious business, and you have to make money……it should NOT negatively affect other aspects of your life.

Creating a writing routine, helps to mitigate against all of these conflicts arising, as a result of your writing life and other tasks, which deserves attention as well.

Having a writer’s routine time-table created, is a great tool on how best to manage and maximize your time. It helps you in determining the time meant for writing, and the time, set for other tasks, which you must do, and are also very important.

4. Engaging in more activities

Yes, with a routine always at your disposal, you have the gift of engaging in one or more social or sport activities, without any negative impact on your writing career.

I remember when starting my writing career, some months ago, I was very scared and concerned, about how I can take up some more profitable and brain enhancing chores like running, football and even going to the gym.

My fears were understandable, but not completely established on facts. Well yes, I was just starting my freelance writing business, I felt, it may prove difficult and time consuming, once I am fully engaged in those extra activities, while trying to focus on my writing.

But when I read about the importance of having a schedule as a writer, it was easy for me to do all those things, I had always wanted to do, without affecting my writing routine one bit.

In actual fact, engaging in these activities has tremendously helped boost my writing career, since my body and mind, are always in the right place, and also it helped to reduce the stress, which I used to experience in the past.

5. It makes you feel refreshed for the next day

I just can’t explain the kind of joy and calmness of the mind I experience, whenever I wake up in the morning, before diving into my writing tasks for the day, or any other tasks for that matter.

Ever since I allowed my routine be my guide and daily planner (so to speak), I am not under any pressure to do, what I know within me is not feasible.

I mean, once I go through my schedule for the day, and I know the time, I am to allocate on a particular task, I just put my head and heart into it, and accomplish it, since my day has been well planned out.

You know, there is this joy you feel, knowing fully well, when you have accomplished the task meant for a day for that day, without having a spill over, to the next day.

For everyone involved in one form of business or the other, it’s vital that you have a physical location or virtual location (a domain name, built into a website or blog just like mine), where you can easily be located, and provide writing services for a particular rate.

Now, to the main question…… is a website needed for a Freelance Writer?

Truth be told, the answer to this pertinent question is on the basis of a Yesand well…No.

However, I am tilting more to the Yes variable. In fact, if I’m to give it a score in percentage, I would say over 85%, meaning that, you MUSThave a website for your writing business, before it can really flourish, and start making some serious money, as a freelance writer.

Frankly speaking, there are few examples here and there, of writers who achieved a little bit of success, when they started, but couldn’t sustain it overtime, simply because, they did not have a “home” or online presence, where clients can always contact them for business.

To eke out a sustainable living off freelance writing, and to be able to maintain a very high clientele base, the importance of having a website for your business can never be overemphasized.

Strong benefits of having a freelance writing website or blog:

It makes you look and appear serious

It helps in establishing your brand image and name

Attracting other writers to your blog, helps to improve your writing skills

High paying clients will always have a “home” to contact you

Have a hire-me page or service on your blog, to market yourself

Sometimes in life, we are faced with that nagging question, when we have to decide, if we want to continue working in the corporate world or start our blogging/writing career?

Personally, I have experienced such thoughts, up to the point where my head ached. And to be sincere, it’s not a simple decision to make, because you have to consider so many things.

As a matter of fact, you will begin to question yourself, if you are psychologically sound. Even those close to you, will think that you are having a mental break down or something closely related to it.

Before you can take any concrete decision (hopefully, a decision, which will not come back to hunt and hurt you later in the future), I must add at this point that, a careful and an in-depth research has to be done, and deep thinking, has to be carried out, before one can truly decide to leave their present jobs, and go into article writing.

This is because, if your job is paying you well, and you are having the best time of your life on the job, I don’t think, it’s a wise decision to forfeit it for article writing.

However, if your mind is made up, these eight reasons below, will help you in making that decision;

8 reasons why you might want to leave your job for freelance writing?

1. Being your own boss. Yes, it’s all our dreams to be our own boss. To be able to plan our life, the way we want, take mind blowing tours around the world etc. Although, being your own boss is a great thing, you must have it at the back (or front) of your mind that, it is very easy to say “I want to be my own boss”, it’s a different ball game entirely, when you start your article writing career.
If you think, you have gathered the necessary experience and set skills, which will make you succeed as a writer, there is no need holding back, on starting as a freelance writer.

2. Not being appreciated at your current job. It’s infuriating when you are not being appreciated and recognized at the work place. For someone like me, who is still working in the corporate world, I can confidently say that, nothing hurts more, when those who are working with you, do not appreciate your efforts and contribution towards the overall success of the team and the organization as a whole.

Personally, I think, if one ever gets to this point and is about to lose his/her mind over the rejection being experienced in the work place, and you have this burning sensation of going into article writing or blogging, this could be a sign from the “gods of writing” that you should consider your writing venture options.

3. Being underutilized. This is a dream killer for every talented and brilliant individual. Its’ just like the proverbial “Putting round pegs in square holes”. When a talented individual is placed in a position, below their abilities, it tends to reduce their overall performance and creative contributions. As a result, it leads to job dissatisfaction, which definitely, leave you with no other choice, but to walk away, and probably, starting your writing career.

4. Decide your pay. Yes, a major reason, why you might want to leave your current job, and head into article writing. Overtime, the fixed or almost fixed salary in the work place, could become annoying, and subsequently, it does not meet all your financial need, you might want to pack your bag and leave.

Although, it does not mean that, immediately you begin your writing journey, all will be rosy. If that is your thought pattern, I would suggest you have a rethink. But then, if all is done well and due diligence is carried out, in the nearest months, you will start to see some dividend, from your efforts. And then, in the long run, clients begin to give you jobs, which means, you start to decide the rates you charge clients.

5. Determining your working schedule. This will definitely follow the pay, you receive as a freelance writer. I am always elated, when I know, I choose when I work and how I work, without over laboring myself. I strongly believe that, if you want to take a strong hold of your future and you are sure of taking the foray into writing; you are blessed with the gift of setting your time and work schedule, while fulfilling all the writing gigs, you have signed up for.

6. Do I know “enough” about writing? It is suicidal, if you have not read and studied enough, before going into article writing. It is strongly advised that, before one begins any project or business, a lot of research has to be made; what are the pros and cons of this business, when will I start seeing good results, who are the gurus in this niche, how do I reach out to clients and article writing sites.

These are some of the questions, you need to answer without being bias. Once you can confidently and truthfully answer these questions, and you are convinced without a doubt, that you will succeed. Quitting your job will not become a difficult decision to make.

However, I must add that, it is of paramount importance to have a Plan B i.e. a contingency plan, in case your planned efforts to go into writing, hits rock bottom.

7. Monotony of work. This point right here, will definitely make you consider quitting your job, when you have the passion for writing. Nothing scares me more, when a particular task becomes a drag, because it has become so “dead”. No single life in it anymore, no joy waking up in the money, with that sense of fulfilment, because the job has become monotonous in nature and too predictable.

However, the reverse is the case, when it comes to writing. The uniqueness, variableness and unpredictability of writing articles, is filled with fun and excitement, because of the openness it provides, most especially, when you are constantly interacting with others in your niche, and also, meeting up clients expectations and target.

8. Unshakable Passion. Last but not the least. When it comes to writing and blogging in general, without the passion for writing; success could be at a minimum, or even nonexistent. It takes a strong will of mind and burning desire to succeed. 0nce you are equipped with these tools, the fear of quitting your current job will not necessarily scare you, into making that switch.

Therefore, even though you are starting out as a newbie, your success will come at the shortest period of time, with hard work coupled with smartness, dedication and perseverance.

In a nutshell, being an Article writer, blogger or business owner, life and business in general, is filled with challenges.

However, with a positive mindset, due diligence and commitment, nothing is going to stop you from achieving your dreams.

Can a Writer Succeed Without a College Degree?

First and foremost, I can confidently say that, being a writer or blogger is a profession on its own.

Some people take writing full time as a profession, while others on the other hand, mix writing and other jobs by the side, as long as, one job or activity does not clash or cause conflict with the other.

Having a college degree is a very important achievement in the life of any individual. I mean, it’s a thing of joy, when you have attained a degree and, being able to stand alongside your peers, friends and family members, to present your certificate, as a full-fledged graduate.

Right from when we were kids, we were told that, for you to make any meaningful impact in your community, country or the world at large, it is vital for you to have a college degree.

Now, some people will ask, will the graduate who is aspiring to become an Article Writer succeed? Or will the non-graduate have difficulties, making any significant headway, in the world of writing?

The truth of the matter is that, there is no straight forward answer to this question. This is because, in the present world we live in, there are so many successful entrepreneurs, who didn’t graduate from college.

On the flip side, there are over hundreds of thousands of individuals, who were excellently brilliant in school, who later in life, attained huge successes in their respective fields of endeavor.

We should also bear in mind that, there are some other graduates, who possess all the qualifications, but still could not land an average income paying job, irrespective of their level of smartness and the degrees obtained.

In this age and time, becoming a successful writer, has nothing to do with your level of education or the degree obtained over the years.

Though, we cannot throw away the importance of education, it (degree) is not a necessity for achieving success in blogging or article writing.

A good college degree is not a concise proven formula, for success in the article writing world.

So, how can a non-degree holder, succeed as a writer?

1. Don’t compare yourself with others
Personally, almost always when I come in contact with people (non-graduates in this case), who are downcast and almost fed up with life, but are so desirous to go into writing , my most paramount advice to them, is to never compare themselves with anyone.

More so, when they are not graduates themselves. I must state that, there is nothing absolutely wrong, in looking up to someone.

However, it’s a different ball game entirely, when you see yourself as a failure, simply because you are not a graduate, who wants to start his/her writing career.

Believe in your dreams and start. The major hurdle you will likely face, is how to start. But when you start, believe you me, the sky is just a stepping stone.

2. A “never give up mindset”
Yes, you have come to the realization that, you are not a graduate, but one challenge still bugging you is, “will I still succeed as a writer, even without the degree?”

Regardless of your educational background, if at any point in time, you begin to doubt yourself, the chances of you succeeding as a writer is almost equal to zero.

You must be resilient and be ready to face the hydra headed challenges, which will definitely come your way. A never say die ideology, will move you from a state of mediocre to merit; from grass to grace, as a writer.

Truth be told, every facet of human success story, has at one time or the other, faced criticism and condemnation.

But you have to realize that, when you know the reason behind your desire to succeed as a writer, you will have to convert all those negative comments, into positive vibrant energy, which will spur you on, in achieving your writing dreams.

3. Be prepared for rejection
Rejection alone can lead to serious psychological and emotional challenges, on someone who is just starting out as a writer. However, the truth is that, as a writer, who is a newbie in the “game”, don’t feel condemned, when people reject you, simply because, you are not a graduate.

It’s (rejection) is part of life, and I stand to be corrected when I say, all the top writers in the world, were at one time or the other, experienced their own share of rejection.

So get up, dust your feet, be courageous and smile. Don’t let your educational status, bar you from starting as a writer. Rejection is a blessing in disguise, if you choose to see it that way, which I am seriously hoping you should.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying it will be easy, but see it as an obstacle, which MUST be overcome.

4. Put in double or more energy
Need I say more? I believe this is self-explanatory. Since you don’t have the academic degree, which others have, it will be ideal, if you get yourself mentally prepared.

You have to put in double efforts and twice the time, other writers are applying to their strategies, before you can make it.

Being a freelance writer is not a 100m sprint race, it is like a marathon. It requires a lot of sacrifices, especially coming from someone, who is not a graduate.

5. Don’t feel cutoff from others
Finally, please don’t stay away from others, most especially, those who are in the same niche with you i.e. writers etc.

Don’t say because, I will be rejected, or I will be pushed aside, and then, you decided not to interact or communicate with others. In the blogging world, everyone needs everyone.

No individual (or in this case, writer) can survive on his/her own.

Go out there, interact with the gurus and the graduates alike, I am 100 percent sure that, you will learn a thing or two from them, even though, they might appear to be condescending.

Sometimes, these skills are not adequately developed to the best of your abilities, simply because, you don’t know how to utilize them, and make them flourish and work for you.

Recognize your inner strength.
One core ingredient to succeed as a freelance writer, is to be aware of your inner strength, which is buried deep inside of you, and has become dormant.

It’s almost an uphill task, when we want to do some certain things, and our minds, tend to play a fast one on us, telling us such thing as; you are not cut out for this; you cannot succeed in this or have you seen anyone around and close to you, achieve anything meaningful as a freelance writer?

You just have to dig deep within you and literally “resurrect” that creative but lazy part of you, before facing the challenges before and ahead of you.

Creating and judiciously following a daily reading schedule, will definitely go a long way, in shaping your intellectual writing capacity. It could be done half-hourly, or per hour basis etc… depending on you and the free time at your disposal.

You just have to find the time, which fits perfectly into your daily work routine, where comfort and rapt attention will be needed, depending on the individual involved. It is not a one size fit all kind of thing.

Form partnership with others.
Personally, I have being very fortunate, and to a very large extent, benefited hugely, when I partner with others.

As a writer, the “beast” within you, is enlightened and elevated to a plain of greatness, when you collaborate with others, in the same line of thoughts and profession as you.

The partnership could be a group of writers, sharing the latest tools and techniques, on how to be a better writer, or to carry out a project together, so that all the parties involved, can be exposed to a larger audience of clients and companies, who are looking for seasoned and upcoming writers to work with, in the future.

The benefits, you will gain from such ventures, will be greater than the sum total of just one person.

Take failure as a tool for motivation.
Lastly, when failure is seen from the angle of discovery and positivity, it becomes a catalyst to feed and grow the writer within you.

I am of the belief that, when you fail in a particular thing, it should not be seen as the end of the world, rather, it should be the major driving force, to refine your writing skills.

As a new writer, you will face rejections and, experience heart piercing failures, at one time or the other. Such situations, should not stop you from pressing forward.

These stages are very vital, where you can adjust your thinking pattern positively, turning the anger into something creative.

As a result of this transformation, you will realize overtime that, the writer deep inside of you, will begin to grow, and within the shortest period of time, your writing pattern will get better, and more importantly, clients will be constantly contacting you to write for them, at an agreed rate, beneficial to both parties.
