By Shina Abubakar Osogbo

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun state, has disclosed that his administration and political family endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office in the best interest of Osun and Yoruba people globally.

The governor added that the decision is morally right to ensure the development drive of Osun State, saying the state is the ancestral birthplace of the president and deserves the needed support.

A statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday stated that Governor Adeleke spoke while inspecting the ongoing rehabilitation of the Ilesa-Ife-Ibadan express road.

According to the governor, President Tinubu is “our own son, father and leader” who deserves our support beyond political considerations.

“I am the governor of the ancestral birthplace of Mr President. How can I have my own in the saddle and think twice before embracing him? I need no persuasion to act, as I have declared repeatedly, on our endorsement of Mr President.

“How many governors are as lucky as me? Well, my brother, Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, will claim to be luckier. But we, in Osun State, count ourselves lucky and privileged to have one of our illustrious sons and fathers at the helm of affairs of Nigeria,” the governor noted.

While noting that the decision to endorse the president is beyond partisan consideration, the governor reaffirmed his stance in support of President Tinubu and expressed gratitude of the state to Mr President for the ongoing construction of the Ilesa-Ife-Ibadan Motorway.

“I am elated at the speed and quality of work. The reconstruction will further widen and ease access to major centres of Osun State and complement my administration’s accelerated infrastructure deliveries across towns and villages.

“Our administration has also rehabilitated a number of federal roads from 2022 to date. At the state level, over 300 kilometres of state roads have been reconstructed. We are hoping Mr President will soon authorise payment of a refund for those rehabilitated federal roads.

“We, however, again convey our appreciation to Mr President for the approval of the reconstruction of the Ibadan-Iwo road-Osogbo as well as the Gbongan-Akoda Road. ” I hope to write to Mr President to further approve the Osogbo—Ilesa road for reconstruction,” the governor noted.

The 2026 summer transfer window is already witnessing the end of several iconic eras across European football, with legendary managers and senior players preparing to leave clubs where they became household names.

From Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola ending his trophy-laden reign to uncertainty surrounding stars like Mohamed Salah and Andoni Iraola, here are the biggest exits dominating football headlines.

Pep Guardiola — Manchester City

Guardiola has officially confirmed he will leave Manchester City after 10 years in charge, bringing an end to one of the greatest managerial eras in Premier League history.

The Spaniard won 20 trophies during his time at the Etihad, including six Premier League titles and the club’s first UEFA Champions League crown. Manchester City also became the first English side to win four consecutive league titles under him.

The club has already announced plans to immortalise him with “The Pep Guardiola Stand” and a statue outside the stadium.

Andoni Iraola — Bournemouth

Andoni Iraola has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after managers following his impressive work at AFC Bournemouth.

After guiding Bournemouth to one of their strongest Premier League campaigns, Iraola has been linked with bigger jobs across Europe, especially following Guardiola’s confirmed exit at Manchester City.

The Spaniard earned widespread praise for transforming Bournemouth into one of the league’s most aggressive and entertaining sides, making his future one of the biggest talking points of the summer.

Bernardo Silva — Manchester City

Bernardo Silva is expected to leave Manchester City after years as one of Guardiola’s most trusted players.

The Portuguese midfielder played a major role in City’s dominance, helping the club win multiple league titles, domestic cups and the Champions League. Reports suggest he wants a fresh challenge after nearly a decade in England.

His farewell at the Etihad during Guardiola’s final game further confirmed his departure.

John Stones — Manchester City

John Stones is also leaving Manchester City after establishing himself as one of the club’s most important defenders during Guardiola’s reign.

The England international overcame injury setbacks and criticism earlier in his career to become central to City’s tactical evolution, especially during their treble-winning campaign.

Supporters gave him an emotional farewell during Guardiola’s final home appearance.

Mohamed Salah — Liverpool

After nearly a decade at Liverpool FC, Salah is widely expected to depart as one of the greatest players in the club’s history.

The Egyptian forward transformed Liverpool’s attack since joining from Roma in 2017, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and several individual awards.

Despite continued brilliance in front of goal, reports suggest Liverpool are preparing for life after Salah as the club begins a new era following the departures of several senior figures.

Andrew Robertson — Liverpool

Andrew Robertson is another long-serving Liverpool star whose future remains uncertain.

The Scottish captain became one of the best left-backs in world football under Jürgen Klopp, forming a devastating partnership with Trent Alexander-Arnold during Liverpool’s most successful modern era.

With Liverpool planning a squad rebuild after bringing on Kerkez last season, Robertson has been linked with possible moves abroad.

Robert Lewandowski — Barcelona

Lewandowski’s time at FC Barcelona comes to an end as the Catalan club continues reshaping its squad.

The veteran striker arrived from Bayern Munich as one of Europe’s deadliest forwards and maintained impressive scoring numbers despite his age.

However, Barcelona are reportedly considering younger attacking options moving forward.

Casemiro — Manchester United

Casemiro is expected to leave Manchester United this summer.

The Brazilian midfielder brought experience and leadership after arriving from Real Madrid, and has impressed across all competitions for the red devils.

He has now helped the team qualify for UCL football after a disastrous season.

Antoine Griezmann — Atlético Madrid

Griezmann is reportedly considering ending his second spell at Atlético Madrid.

The French star remains one of Atlético’s greatest modern players, but growing interest from clubs outside Europe has fueled speculation over a summer departure.

He has previously hinted at ambitions of playing in Major League Soccer before retirement.

Santi Cazorla — Real Oviedo

Veteran midfielder Santi Cazorla is expected to retire after an emotional final chapter with Real Oviedo.

The former Arsenal star returned to his boyhood club in one of football’s most celebrated homecomings after recovering from career-threatening injuries.

Koke — Atlético Madrid

Koke’s future at Atlético Madrid is also set to depart Atletico Madrid after a long spell in the Spanish team.

The midfielder has spent his entire professional career at Atlético and captained the club through some of its most successful years under Diego Simeone.

A departure would mark the end of an era in Madrid.

Dani Carvajal — Real Madrid

Dani Carvajal, a Real Madrid star, has been celebrated over the week as he is leaving the club.

The defender has enjoyed a hugely successful career with Madrid, winning multiple Champions League and La Liga titles.

Injuries and age, however, have increased uncertainty over his long-term role.

David Alaba — Real Madrid

Persistent injury problems fueled speculation about Alaba’s future at Real Madrid.

The Austrian defender arrived from Bayern Munich as one of Europe’s elite defenders but has struggled with fitness in recent seasons.

Madrid are reportedly open to reshaping their defensive options this summer.

Julian Brandt — Borussia Dortmund
Julian Brandt has attracted interest from clubs outside Germany as Borussia Dortmund prepare for squad changes.

The attacking midfielder has been one of Dortmund’s most creative players but is now set to seeking a new challenge abroad.

Niklas Süle — Borussia Dortmund

Niklas Süle is also reportedly available for transfer as Dortmund continue restructuring plans.

The defender’s inconsistency and injury concerns have contributed to uncertainty surrounding his future, despite his solid performances for the Yellows over the years.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday adjourned a suit filed by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) seeking an order striking down Sections 138 and 77(5) of the new Electoral Act, 2026, until June 9 for hearing.

The case, which was listed on the day’s cause list, could not proceed due to Justice Mohammed Umar’s absence.

Although the NDC’s lawyer, Vincent Ottaokpukpu, and the defence lawyers, including O.J. Opawale, were in court, the judge was said to be on another official engagement.

The matter was subsequently fixed for June 9 for hearing.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Umar had, on May 8, fixed today for the hearing of the case.

The NDC, in the suit, argued that the two sections are inconsistent with the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The NDC, which was registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Feb. 5, had filed the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/635/2026.

The party, in the originating summons, sued the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Clerk of the National Assembly (NASS) as 1st and 2nd defendants.

It also joined Senate President and Chairman of the National Assembly, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, and INEC as 3rd to 4th defendants, respectively.

Ottaokpukpu, who filed the suit on March 27, prayed the court to grant their reliefs.

The lawyer sought an order striking down the provisions of Section 138 for being inconsistent with the compulsory provisions of Sections 65 (2) (a), 106 (1) (c), 131 (1) (d), 177 (1) (d) and 66 (1) (i), 107 (1) (i), 137 (1) (j) and 182 (1) (j) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He sought an order directing the 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants to amend and re-enact a new provision of the Electoral Act, 2026, to restore “qualification” as a ground of challenging the return of any candidate into the seats of the House of Representatives, Senate, House of Assembly, president and governor.

He said this is in line with the provisions of Sections 65 (2) (a), 106 (1) (c), 131 (1) (d), 177 (1) (d) and 66 (1) (i), 107 (1) (i), 137 (1) (j) and 182 (1) (j) of the constitution.

Ottaokpukpu equally sought an order striking down Section 77 (5) of the Electoral Act, 2026, for being inconsistent with the provisions of Sections 40 and 65 (2) (b), 106 (1) (d), 231 (1) (c) and 177 (1) (c) of the 1999 Constitution, among others.

In the affidavit in support of the suit, Ezechi Adaobi, a litigation secretary in the law firm of V-C Ottaokpukpu & Associates, said NDC, as a stakeholder in the Nigerian electoral process, will in future elections field candidates for elections, including the office of the president.

She said the National Assembly, under the 2nd and 3rd defendants’ stewardship, had, on Feb. 18, passed the Electoral Act, 2026.

She said President Bola Tinubu, upon the recommendation of the AGF, assented to the Act of Parliament on Feb. 19.

Adaobi stated that the NDC’s national legal adviser said he had read and understood all the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the new Act.

She said the legal adviser observed that Section 77(5) of the Electoral Act, 2026, provides that only members whose names are contained in the political party’s digital register transmitted to INEC 21 days before a primary election or convention will be eligible to participate in the primary elections.

She said this section is inconsistent with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, which did not provide for the duration for which a citizen must be a member of a political party to be eligible to contest for an election.

Adaobi said from experience, members who are dissatisfied by the conduct of primaries in their respective parties usually seek refuge in other parties to enable them to participate in the general elections.”

Adaobi, therefore, urged the court to grant their reliefs in the interest of justice.

But INEC, in its counter affidavit filed on April 27, disagreed with the NDC.

It argued that the constitutional and statutory roles of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants are provided by the constitution and the relevant enabling statutes, and not as characterised by the plaintiff.

INEC submitted that the Electoral Act, 2026, was validly passed by the National Assembly on Feb. 18 and duly assented to by President Bola Tinubu.

It said that the National Assembly passed the Electora! Act, 2026, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution.

The commission stated that President Tinubu assented to the Electoral Act, 2026, and that the same is now law within the federation.

It stated that the provisions of Section 77 of the Electoral Act, 2026, do not infringe upon the constitutional right of any person to form, participate in, or belong to any political party.

It stated that the period allotted for the conduct of party primaries, being from April 23 to May 30 (inclusive of the resolution of disputes arising therefrom), is a period of 38 clear days in strict compliance with the Electoral Act, 2026, and the constitutional framework.

INEC, therefore, averred that by its timetable, political parties have a window of not less than the period prescribed by the timetable for the conduct of party primaries.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sen. Seriake Dickson, who represents the Bayelsa West Senatorial District, is currently the NDC’s national leader, while former Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra had been cleared to contest in the party’s presidential primary. (NAN)

By Enitan Abdultawab

Popular health influencer and medical doctor, Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, has warned Nigerians against consuming spoilt tomatoes and other fungus-infested food items popularly known as “Ata Esha” or “Awarawa”, saying they may pose serious health risks.

The doctor, in a viral health advisory shared on his X account on Monday, cautioned that visibly rotten tomatoes may contain harmful fungal growth capable of producing dangerous toxins.

“This tomato, commonly called ‘spoilt tomatoes’ (ata esha) or ‘awarawa’… there’s a poison inside this tomato that a lot of you don’t know about, but you’re eating it every day,” he said.

According to him, the white substances often found inside rotten tomatoes are caused by fungi that produce aflatoxins, which can become harmful when consumed repeatedly over time.

“Those white things inside the tomato are caused by a fungus that produces a toxin known as aflatoxin, which causes liver cancer in adults. If you give it to children, it can cause stunted growth as well as other things,” he added.

Egemba noted that the risk is not limited to tomatoes alone, explaining that food items such as corn, onions, groundnuts and grains stored in damp or poor conditions may also become contaminated.

He warned that many consumers often purchase such products because they are cheaper, without considering the health implications.

“You might think you are saving money by eating this type of tomato, but you are actually risking your life,” he said, adding that contaminated ingredients are sometimes used in meals sold at restaurants.

The medical doctor further advised Nigerians against merely cutting away visibly rotten parts of food, stressing that contamination may have already spread internally.

He urged consumers to discard grains or food items with unusual smells or signs of dampness and ensure food is stored in cool, dry conditions.

According to the National Cancer Institute, aflatoxins are toxins produced by fungi commonly found on crops such as maize, peanuts, cottonseed and tree nuts.

The institute explained that the fungi — mainly Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus — thrive in warm and humid conditions and may contaminate crops during harvesting, storage or processing.

It added that exposure to aflatoxins has been linked to an increased risk of liver cancer.

Vanguard also recalls that the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency had also previously warned residents against consuming fungus-infested tomatoes, urging consumers to avoid products showing white, green or black fungal patches.

Four-time champion Iga Swiatek powered into the French Open second round on Monday with a dominant straight-sets win over Australian teenager Emerson Jones.

Swiatek, playing at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since linking up with Rafael Nadal’s former coach Francisco Roig, showed flashes of her best tennis in a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

The Pole is looking to regain the trophy she won at Roland Garros in three successive years from 2022-24 before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals 12 months ago.

Swiatek will take on Czech Sara Bejlek for a place in the last 32 on Wednesday.

The third seed is among the favourites for the title after finding some form by reaching the Italian Open semi-finals earlier this month.

Swiatek led 6-1, 3-0, before 17-year-old wildcard Jones battled for respectability, holding serve for the first time in the fifth game of the second set.

An upset was never on the cards, though, and Swiatek wrapped up victory after just an hour on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Economic crunch, rising petrol prices triggered by the Middle East war and insurgency have driven costs of sheep up in Nigeria ahead of Eid-al-Adha.

Traders lamented sluggish sales as thousands of sheep stood in pouring rain on Friday at Kara Market, a sprawling livestock hub along the Lagos-Ogun border in southwest Nigeria.

The market receives thousands of animals daily from northern Nigeria — where most of the country’s livestock is reared — as Muslims prepare for the annual festival.

Roughly half of the country’s population is Muslim and demands for sheep surge during the celebrations.

But several traders told AFP that sales had been slow this year as the cost of livestock has risen sharply.

Prices of sheep, which are favoured for the celebrations, range from 250,000 naira (about $183) to 1.2 million naira, depending on the size.

Comparable animals sold for between 150,000 and 1.0 million naira last year, said trader Abdullahi Bukar.

He said insurgency in the country’s northeast, multiple taxes and illegal toll collections by security officials have driven up prices.

Shoppers nevertheless waded through the muddy market in search of bargains as the downpour eased to a drizzle on Friday.

“We are always scared when we go to the market to buy livestock because terrorists usually attack the markets where we buy stock,” said Bukar, 29.

He had travelled from northeastern Yobe state to trade at the market.

“Sometimes people don’t come to the market to sell to us because of fear,” he said.

More than 2,100 civilians were killed in “violent incidents including attacks from terrorists” in the first quarter of the year, according to SBM Intelligence, a Lagos-based risk consultancy.

“I was told to bring 1.2 million naira for a sheep that is not very big,” shopper Ibrahim Kosoko said. “I had to look for something I can afford.”

He settled for one that cost him around 400,000 naira in a country where the monthly minimum wage is 70,000 naira (about $51).

– Transport costs –

Some traders travel more than 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) to sell sheep at the market and elsewhere in southwest Nigeria, where demand surges ahead of the Muslim festival;

But cost of transporting livestock to the market has more than doubled.

Transport costs typically rise during festive periods but this year’s surge in petrol prices — triggered by the Middle East war — has intensified the pressure.

Many Muslims travel to celebrate Eid with their families but some are now considering shelving their plans due to rising fares.

Petrol prices have nearly doubled in many parts of the country, from around 850 naira per litre to more than 1,320 naira — a record high in a country where gasoline sold for around 195 naira at the start of 2023.

“I will need to spend at least 80,000 naira on travelling to and from my hometown with my child,” said 40-year-old civil servant Taibat Bashir. “That’s not something I can afford.”

She said an uptick in violent attacks in her Kwara home state in recent months — some blamed on jihadist groups — made the prospect of travelling less appealing.

Traders at the sheep market told AFP that rising transport fares were a major headache for them too.

“Truck drivers collect about 2.7 million naira from us to transport our livestock down,” said Abubakar Dauda, 33, from northeastern Adamawa.

That is nearly three times the same service cost him in 2025.

“We even spend up to 300,000 on police checkpoints and taxes to every state we pass through,” he said.

Dauda, who brings in most of his sheep from Chad, said exchange rate volatility had pushed up import and sourcing costs, driving prices in the market even higher.

Shopper Kosoko said there were ways around the price problem.

“It is not compulsory to buy sheep for Ileya,” he said, using the Yoruba word for Eid-al-Adha. “If we cannot afford one, we will find ways to celebrate regardless.”

By Adeola Badru

The Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Adeyemo, has disclosed that he is still awaiting approval from the Federal Government to formally commence operations of his security outfit, Iru Ekun Security Network, as part of efforts to flush criminal elements out of forests across the South-West.

He also affirmed his readiness to comply fully with the Executive Order recently issued by the Oyo State Government under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, which regulates the activities of private security organisations operating within the state.

In a statement made available to journalists on Monday, Igboho reiterated that all required documentation and procedural prerequisites for the approval of Iru Ekun Security Network had already been submitted to the Federal Government, while commending President Bola Tinubu for what he described as a firm commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, particularly in the South-West.

According to the statement: “We have submitted all the required documents for our registered security firm, Iru Ekun Security Network, and are only waiting for the Federal Government approval which will be granted soon.“

“We are absolutely ready to collaborate with the police, Department of State Service (DSS), Nigeria Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other relevant stakeholders in the security sector to flush out terrorists, kidnappers, bandits, and other hoodlums, who are threatening the peace and safety of our people, most especially in rural communities.“

“It is obvious that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is resolutely committed to tackle criminalities not only the South West but also in all other regions in the plagued by insecurity.“

“Besides, I want to state that we are also ready to comply with the new executive order issued by Governor Seyi Makinde to regulate the activities of private security concerns.“

“We are ready to support and cooperate with measures aimed at strengthening the security and peace in Oyo and other states in Yorubaland.“

“Without peace and security, healthy socioeconomic developments cannot thrive, most especially in the rural communities which remain the hub of agricultural production critical to the nation’s food security and means of livelihood for farmers,” the statement concluded.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday adjourned a forfeiture case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against nine properties linked to former Gov. Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa until July 16.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu adjourned the matter following the inability of the EFCC’s lawyer, Oluwaleke Atolagbe, to file a report of compliance in respect of the earlier interim order granted against the properties.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Egwuatu had, on April 24, ordered the temporary forfeiture of the nine properties linked to Sylva, who is also a former minister of state for petroleum resources, to the federal government.

The judge made the order after Atolagbe moved an ex parte motion, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/607/2026, to the effect.

Justice Egwuatu also granted the EFCC’s request for the publication of the order in any two newspapers within 7 days from the date of receipt of the certified true copy of the order for interested person(s) to show cause within 14 days why a final order of forfeiture should not be made.

The affected assets are located across high-value areas in Abuja.

The judge then adjourned the matter until May 25 for a report of compliance.

Upon resuming the hearing on Monday, Benson Ibezim appeared for properties listed in the EFCC’s schedule as 1 and 9.

The properties are four blocks of terraces at Dakibiyu and two blocks of buildings at Garki, currently occupied by the National Information Technology Development Agency.

Alex Ejiesieme, SAN, represented parties seeking to show cause with respect to properties listed as 2 and 5 (a duplex with a penthouse and office complex at Maitama and eight units of one-bedroom flats at No. 8, Misratah Street, Wuse II, Abuja).

Ajayi Olowo, on its part, appeared for a property listed as 7 (two blocks with 12 units of flats at Thaba Tseka Crescent, Wuse II) in the schedule, while Emmanuela Imonikeh represented the 3rd property listed as “one standalone duplex at Palm Springs Estate, Mpape”.

Atolagbe then informed the court that though about six parties had filed their affidavits to show cause in respect of the properties, he said no party had indicated interest in the three remaining properties in the schedule.

NAN reports that the properties yet to be claimed include numbers 4, 6 and 8 in the schedule.

They include a block of flats with 10 units of flats at Wuse Zone 4; a block of flats with six units of flats at No. 1, Mubi Close; and one stand-alone duplex at No. 18, Nile Lake, Plot 1271, Maitama, respectively.

The EFCC’s lawyer therefore informed the court that a motion on notice seeking a final forfeiture of the three properties to the Federal Government had been filed on May 22, since no one had shown cause why the assets should not be permanently forfeited.

The judge, however, said that the motion was not in the court filed.

When Atolagbe was asked if the parties, who had shown cause, had been served, he said only one of the parties was served.

The lawyer said the commission had complied with the earlier order of the court by publishing the enrolled order in Tribune and Punch Newspapers.

He, however, said he was yet to file an affidavit of compliance.

Justice Egwuatu directed Atolagbe to publish the motion on notice seeking final forfeiture of the three properties the way the enrolled order was published.

He also ordered him to serve the parties who were yet to be served and file his report of compliance on the earlier interim order in the interest of a fair hearing.

The judge, who ordered the lawyer to also respond to the processes filed by the interested parties, adjourned the matter until July 16 for a report of compliance. (NAN)

The market receives thousands of animals daily from northern Nigeria – where most of the country’s livestock is reared – as Muslims prepare for the annual festival.

Transport costs

Some traders travel more than 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) to sell sheep at the market and elsewhere in southwest Nigeria, where demand surges ahead of the Muslim festival;

More than 900 suspected Ebola cases have been identified in the conflict-hit Democratic Republic of Congo, the World Health Organization (WHO) chief has said.

“As surveillance efforts have been scaled up in the #DRC #Ebola response, more than 900 suspected cases have been identified so far, including 101 confirmed cases,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a Sunday social media post that gave no update on the death toll.

Ebola is a deadly viral disease that spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids. It can cause severe bleeding and organ failure.

The country declared an outbreak on May 15 caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or treatments.

In a previous update released on Saturday, the DR Congo health ministry said 204 deaths had been recorded in three provinces of the vast central African country, from 867 suspected cases.

Ebola has killed more than 15,000 people across Africa in the past half-century.

Popular social media personality, Solomon Buchi has criticised churches organizing thanksgiving services over Arsenal F.C.’s recent trophy victory, saying the trend is beginning to “look like an idol” and questioning why football celebrations are being brought into church services.

Buchi made the remarks while reacting to a viral video that showed church members celebrating Arsenal’s triumph.

In a now-viral video, Buchi expressed concern about what he described as the blurring of lines between faith and football fandom.

“I might probably get dragged for this. I’m very happy that Arsenal won the trophy. But I’m an Arsenal fan, my wife is an Arsenal fan, most of my friends Arsenal fans, most of the people I know are Arsenal fans, most of the people I respect are Arsenal fans”.

“But see we can celebrate Arsenal’s victory without bringing it to church in that kind of manner. Because I don’t understand why a church is organizing a whole thanksgiving service because of Arsenal’s victory.”

Buchi added that while he understands playful banter from preachers to engage congregants, he believes testimonies centered on football victories cross a line.

“I understand the banter that preachers throw here and there just to make people laugh and lighten up the mood and be relatable. But people going out to give testimonies, I think they are crossing the thin line. It’s beginning to look like an idol. It’s beginning to look like we don’t understand what church is meant for”.

An Iranian health ministry official said Monday the injuries suffered by supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes in late February were only “superficial”, offering a rare account of the day he was wounded.

The 56-year-old has not appeared publicly since he was named as Iran’s supreme leader on March 8, issuing only written statements, fuelling speculation about his health.

In March, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Mojtaba was “believed to be alive, wounded and disfigured”.

Mojtaba succeeded his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli strikes on February 28 that triggered retaliatory Iranian attacks across the region.

On Monday, health ministry spokesman Hossein Kermanpour described the day Mojtaba was wounded and his arrival at a hospital, which he did not identify.

He said Mojtaba arrived at the hospital around 1:00 pm Tehran time on February 28 and “entered the operating room along with several other wounded individuals.”

“Apart from superficial injuries to the face, head and legs, which caused neither amputation nor any particular medical problem, nothing major had happened,” Kermanpour told ILNA news agency.

“From my perspective as a physician these were not considered serious injuries and required no special procedures apart from one or two stitches.”

He added that Mojtaba, who was fasting until nightfall during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, “refused to break his fast and kept fasting until iftar, which itself showed his good health.”

Kermanpour said he was discharged from the hospital at around 2:00 am on March 1, but did not say to where he was moved.

On May 7, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said he had met the leader and that their meeting lasted two and a half hours.

Three days later, Iranian state TV said the head of Iran’s military central command, Ali Abdollahi, met with the supreme leader who gave “new directives and guidance for the continuation of operations to confront the enemy.”

UYO—Senator John Udoedeghe has emerged as the African Democratic Congress, ADC, candidate for the Akwa Ibom governorship election, vowing to unseat Governor Umo Eno in 2027.

Udoedeghe was declared the winner of the party’s primary held on Saturday after securing a total of 66,099 votes to win over his opponent, Barr Mfon Peter, who scored 103 votes at the exercise.

The Chairman of the Primaries Election Committee, Mr Titus Ejor, who announced the results on Sunday evening in Uyo, said the process was peaceful and conducted in line with ADC guidelines.

Speaking after his declaration, the former National Secretary of the Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC, said his emergence reflected the desire of the Akwa Ibom people for change and accountable leadership.

“The people are tired of excuses. By 2027, we will return power to the people and deliver the development Akwa Ibom deserves,” he said.

Udoedeghe, who represented Akwa Ibom North East in the Senate, stated that his campaign would focus on economic revival, youth empowerment, and infrastructural development across the state’s 31 local government areas.

He accused the administration of Eno of “spreading poverty in the midst of abundance”, adding that his government would provide lofty policies that would reposition the state for prosperity and development.

“I am not in your government; I am an opposition person who wants to take power from you. I want to hold you accountable, so you don’t need me to be friendly with you.

“You have spread poverty in the midst of plenty, you have turned out young men to old men with gray hairs.

“You have stressed out people with bad policies. You don’t have a policy to make our people move away from poverty, that’s why we want to change you,” Udoedeghe added.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi sparked injury concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after asking to be substituted during Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer clash against Philadelphia Union on Sunday.

The 38-year-old forward was taken off in the 73rd minute after appearing to clutch the back of his left leg during the encounter played in wet conditions in Miami.

Despite the scare, Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos suggested the decision was precautionary rather than serious, insisting the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was exhausted from the demanding conditions.

“As far as I know, we don’t have a [medical] report on that yet, but he really was fatigued,” Hoyos said after the match.

“He was tired; the pitch was heavy and when in doubt, the standard approach is always to ensure you don’t take any risks.”

Messi, who guided Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, has yet to officially confirm whether he will feature at the upcoming tournament, though he is widely expected to return for what would be a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.

The tournament kicks off on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with Argentina scheduled to face Algeria in their opening match on June 16.

Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has carefully managed his playing time amid recurring hamstring injuries, though he has still spent periods sidelined.

Recall that the final list comes amid various petitions by aspirants and aggrieved supporters over alleged imposition of candidates and electoral malpractices that played out during the primaries across the wards.

APC, primary elections conducted across the States followed the Electoral Act, 2026, with the option of direct primaries or consensus as a mode of selecting candidates for general elections.

The exercise started with primaries into
the Federal House of Representatives, followed by the Senate, the House of Assembly, the Governorship and Presidential, respectively.

Tension, anxiety, and petitions have greeted the conduct of Lagos State House of Assembly and House of Representatives primaries.

Instructively, Nigeria’s party primary elections have long been regarded as the most contested and least regulated stage of the democratic process. For decades, the nomination of candidates by political parties was marked by delegate manipulation, parallel congresses, illegal exclusions of aspirants, and brazen substitutions of validly elected candidates.

The repealed Electoral Act No. 13 of 2022 made modest inroads into these pathologies, but it’s toleration of indirect (delegate) primaries and its ambiguous framework for judicial oversight left significant room for abuse.

Section 84(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026 provides that every political party “seeking to nominate candidates for elections under this Act shall hold primaries for aspirants to all elective positions,” and that permissive, and its scope is universal: it applies to every elective position from the Presidential to local councillorship.

Despite assurances by Ojelabi to ensure a level playing field for a credible exercise, some aspirants have protested the outcome.

The APC primary election held in Lagos Mainland was thrown into crisis following allegations of widespread irregularities, voter intimidation and disruption of the electoral process across several voting centres.

The disruption was reported in areas like Apapa Road, Makoko, Iwaya and Adekunle, where party members and delegates allegedly faced intimidation and were prevented from participating freely in the exercise.

The developments reported in a few other local government areas created tension and confusion, as aggrieved members accused some party leaders of manipulating the process in favour of a preferred candidate.

As of press time, the Appeals Committee set up to resolve the grievances arising from the primaries was still attending to various petitions it had gathered.

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the factional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Adolphus Wabara and members of the interim National Working Committee (NWC) under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki are currently holding a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.

Sources familiar with the development told Vanguard that the meeting may not be unconnected with recent reports linking Governor Makinde to a presidential ambition on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), as well as concerns surrounding recent bandit attacks recorded in Ibadan a few days after the governor’s declaration.

“The meeting may not be unconnected with recent reports linking Governor Makinde to a presidential ambition on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement, while discussions are also believed to touch on the recent bandit attacks in Ibadan,” the source said.

Meanwhile, further details of the meeting were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, as discussions remained ongoing behind closed doors.

Governor Ahmed Ododo has pledged the support of the Confluence State for President Bola Tinubu’s reelection bid in 2027, officially designating the campaign as his own “personal project”.

This is contained in a statement on Monday in Lokoja issued by Kogi Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr Kingsley Fanwo.

Ododo described Tinubu’s landslide victory in the presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a clear affirmation of the president’s visionary leadership and growing national acceptance.

The governor said the overwhelming support for the President reflects the confidence of party members and Nigerians in his courageous, reform-driven administration and commitment to national development.

He noted that President Tinubu had shown “uncommon love” for Kogi through landmark approvals and interventions poised to transform the state’s economic fortunes.

“I see Mr President’s reelection as a personal project to unlock the enormous potential of Kogi.

“Mr President has granted approvals for the establishment of an airport, a Free Trade Zone, an Agricultural Processing Zone and many other transformational projects,” the statement quoted the governor

The governor emphasised that supporting Tinubu’s return by Kogi is both gratitude and strategy, saying, “for us in Kogi, the reelection of Mr President is a reward for his love for the state and for the greatness of our nation.

“His economic reforms are reshaping our nation and laying the foundation for long-term prosperity”.

The governor commended the President for pursuing bold economic reforms despite challenges, saying history would be kind to leaders who make difficult decisions for future stability and prosperity.

Ododo assured Tinubu of the total support of the Kogi Government and people ahead of the 2027 general elections, reaffirming the state’s commitment to progressive governance, economic transformation, and national unity.

The governor also praised Tinubu for submitting himself to the democratic process inspite of being the National Leader of the party, saying the gesture had further endeared him to Nigerians.

With this pledge, Kogi joins the growing list of states positioning to mobilise behind the President’s reelection campaign.

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, have arrested a drug peddler who allegedly worked as an informant for kidnappers, alongside 98 other suspected criminals, in a statewide operation.

Parading the suspects, Amotekun Commander Chief Adetunji Adeleye said some of those arrested posed as mentally unstable persons to avoid suspicion while carrying out kidnappings and robberies.

Adeleye said the “fake lunatics” were involved in drug trafficking, gathering intelligence for kidnappers, and other crimes across the state.

“Our intelligence and plainclothes officers monitored and tracked them to places where they charged their phones, changed clothes, and coordinated operations before they were arrested,” Adeleye said.

Other suspects were picked up during anti-kidnapping raids, as well as for robbery, drug peddling, and acts likely to breach public peace.

“Of the 98 suspects, 60 are facing prosecution in court, 38 cases were resolved through Alternative Dispute Resolution, and 13 remain under investigation.

” Ten suspects were arrested either at kidnapping scenes or while attempting abductions.

Adeleye recounted how Amotekun’s rapid response team rescued a kidnapped couple in Iluwabu community without paying ransom.

After receiving distress information, operatives moved into the forest and rescued the wife immediately, then secured the husband’s release in an overnight operation.

The commander said that the couple, Mr. and Mrs. Sanusi Kehinde were abducted from their residence in Ilu-Abo community, Akure North council area of the state.

They were reportedly attacked shortly after arriving at their home around 6:30 p.m., when armed men who had allegedly laid ambush for them emerged from hiding and forcefully dragged them into a nearby forest.

Narrating his experience, Mr. Kehinde said the kidnappers struck unexpectedly as he was attempting to step out of their vehicle.

According to him, “We had just returned home in Ilu-Abo, unaware that the kidnappers had been waiting for us. As I tried to come out of the car, they attacked and abducted us immediately,” he recounted.

According to him, the abductors subjected them to severe physical assault during the ordeal.

“Our experience in the hands of the kidnappers was traumatic and pathetic.

“They attacked us with machetes and beat us mercilessly. We sustained several injuries during the attack,” he said.

Mr. Kehinde, however, praised the swift intervention of Amotekun operatives, noting that his wife was rescued less than ten minutes after the abduction due to the agency’s rapid response.

“The way Amotekun responded was incredible. In less than 10 minutes, they had rescued my wife. The Corps Commander himself was actively involved in the bush operation,” he said.

Adeleye attributed the recent rise in kidnapping and other crimes to pressure on criminal elements fleeing the North.

The commander assured residents that Ondo remains safe, noting that Amotekun is conducting joint operations with the military, police, DSS, NSCDC, and other agencies in forest areas.

“Our forests are no longer safe havens for criminals. Security agencies are working together to ensure the protection of lives and property,” he said.

Adeleye urged residents to share actionable intelligence, assuring that all information would be treated with strict confidentiality.

Two former Peoples Democratic Party senators from the 9th National Assembly, Nicholas Tofowomo and Patrick Akinyelure, have emerged as African Democratic Congress candidates for the 2027 National Assembly elections in Ondo State.

Tofowomo will fly the ADC flag for Ondo South senatorial district, while Akinyelure, a two-term senator, secured the ticket for Ondo Central.

Former PDP governorship aspirant Foluso Mayowa Adefemi emerged as the senatorial candidate for Ondo North.

In the House of Representatives races, philanthropist and former PDP leader Hon. Balarabe Akinwumi was named candidate for Akure North/South federal constituency.

Former Ondo State representative on the Niger Delta Development Commission and NNPP governorship candidate in the last election, Hon. Gbenga Edema, emerged as candidate for Ilaje/Ese-Odo federal constituency.

Other ADC House of Representatives candidates are Omosuyi Abayomi for Irele/Okitipupa, Samuel Adesida for Owo/Ose, Olafunmiloye Olufemi for Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo/Odigbo, Samuel Akinkunola, Adegunloye Adeusi, and Abiloye Olutade for Akoko Southeast/Southwest.

Speaking after his affirmation, Akinwumi said he would win because people were dissatisfied with the All Progressives Congress government at both state and federal levels.

Akinwumi said he lives among the people, understands their concerns, and would alleviate poverty and deliver dividends of democracy if elected.

Tofowomo said his record in the 9th Assembly would speak for him.

Tofowomo cited the construction of police stations, distribution of tools, and skills training programmes as part of his empowerment initiatives, and said voters would reward him in 2027.

Akinyelure said he left the APC for the ADC due to internal crisis and a loss of public confidence in government performance.

Akinyelure said the ADC would benefit from fallout of the APC primaries. He added that most ADC candidates emerged through consensus and were trusted figures loved by their people.

ADC state chairman Chief Tola Alabere, said the conduct of the primaries showed the party was ready for the general elections.

Alabere predicted an implosion in the APC and said the ADC would benefit from the ruling party’s candidate imposition crisis.
