A British funeral director faced prison Monday over a scandal that saw bodies left uncremated while relatives were handed other people’s ashes, sparking calls for better regulation of the industry.

An ex-employee described Robert Bush’s funeral parlour as “something from a horror scene”, prosecutor Chris Paxton said at the start of a five-day sentencing hearing.

Police who searched his premises after a tip-off found 31 bodies in a cold storage area that should have been cremated months earlier, including a stillborn baby that had been there for almost two years.

They also found more than 100 sets of ashes.

“There were bodies stored on the racks on both sides of the room,” the lawyer said at Hull Crown Court in northeast England.

“The vast majority were uncovered and in varying states of decomposition,” he added.

The 48-year-old previously pleaded guilty to 67 offences spanning 12 years and affecting hundreds of victims.

Jasmine Beverley, whose son Sunny was stillborn in May 2022, said Bush appeared “lovely” and presented himself as “very respectful”.

“It was a shock to learn what had actually been going on behind the closed doors,” she told BBC radio, adding Sunny’s remains were found in an brown envelope on the floor even though she believed he had been cremated.

“I discovered that he was still in there almost two years after we’d had the funeral,” she said, describing the discovery as “distressing”.

Beverley and her husband and a number of other families are campaigning for changes to funeral parlour regulation.

Bush, who ran Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, was trusted by bereaved families but mistreated them on an “almost industrial scale”, Paxton said.

Police began investigating in March 2024 after being contacted by someone over concerns for “the deceased” at the business.

The sentencing hearing is to hear statements from over 100 victims.

Bush has admitted dozens of charges including preventing lawful and decent burial, theft, and fraud.

Four of the fraud charges involved falsely presenting ashes to women as the remains of their unborn children.

Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have launched a major offensive against four suspected terrorist kingpins—Dogo Gide, Najaja, Nasanda and Buba Oris—in Zamfara State, disrupting what military sources described as a planned mass movement of armed fighters and killing several suspected terrorists.

Military sources said the operation followed credible intelligence received on July 25 indicating that a large number of armed fighters had assembled along the Barayarzaki Riverline in Anka Local Government Area under the command of the four leaders.

According to the sources, the group was allegedly preparing coordinated attacks in parts of Zamfara State and neighbouring states.

Acting on the intelligence, troops conducted precision air strikes on suspected terrorist positions at Barayan Zaki and strategic crossing points along the Barayarzaki Riverline.

Simultaneously, personnel of the 8 Division Strike Force deployed ambush teams before launching follow-up ground operations to intercept fleeing fighters.

The military said the coordinated assault disrupted the movement of the armed groups, forcing them to retreat toward Barayan Zaki while attempting to cross the Gummi–Anka Main Supply Route.

According to the sources, troops pursued the fleeing suspects, leading to a gun battle at Kombo High Ground along the Anka–Gummi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.

The sources said several suspected terrorists were killed during the exchange, while others fled into nearby forests.

One soldier reportedly sustained injuries during the operation and was evacuated to the General Hospital in Anka for treatment. The military said no equipment was lost during the operation.

During follow-up clearance operations on July 26, troops reportedly recovered 13 rounds of PKT machine gun ammunition and one machine gun round while continuing patrols to prevent the armed groups from regrouping.

Military sources said Operation FANSAN YAMMA has continued to intensify intelligence-driven air and ground operations across the North-West to dismantle terrorist networks, restrict the movement of bandit leaders and prevent attacks on communities and security formations.

The sources added that the latest offensive represents a significant operational setback for some of the region’s most wanted terrorist leaders as security forces sustain pressure to improve security across Zamfara and neighbouring states.

A Canada-based Nigerian woman, Ezinne Nwanorue, has stirred widespread reactions on social media after celebrating the death of her mother-in-law, Comfort Chika Nwanorue, while her marital dispute with her husband, Franklin Nwanorue, continues to play out online.

The latest development comes days after the couple went viral for publicly taking a fidelity oath. In a now-viral video, Franklin vowed to remain faithful to his wife after relocating to Canada.

He said, “I confess and I promise that if I come to Canada and cheat on you, let me die in the name of Jesus.”

However, Ezinne later accused her husband of allegedly having an affair with another woman despite making the public declaration.

In a fresh post shared on social media, Ezinne reacted to the death of her mother-in-law with a controversial message, describing the deceased as a “wicked witch.”

“One wicked witch is down: my dead mother-in-law, Comfort Chika Nwanorue, rest in pieces in hell with other dead witches; your members will soon join you,” she wrote.

She went on to allege that her late mother-in-law and other members of the family had worked against her and tried to destroy her future.

“These people have dealt with me in this life; they found out about my destiny, and they did everything within their power to bring me down, but I thank God for helping me discover who I am and coming through for my destiny,” she stated.

Ezinne also claimed she was speaking under her spiritual calling, warning those she described as witches and evil people to repent.

“I am talking from the place of my office as a prophetess of God Almighty,” she wrote.

The comments have attracted widespread attention on social media, with users divided over her remarks and the couple’s highly publicized family feud.

PORT HARCOURT — Panic gripped Bori Town in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State on Sunday after unidentified gunmen shot dead a former Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the council, Mr. Letam Kine.

The incident reportedly occurred around 6 p.m. along the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic Road.

A resident, who identified himself simply as Barine, said the attack triggered panic as residents and passers-by fled the area for safety.

According to him, the motive for the killing remains unclear, while the assailants fled before security operatives arrived at the scene.

Reacting to the incident, Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Mr. Thomas Bariere, condemned the killing, describing it as senseless and heartbreaking.

In a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Communications, Barry Neemana, Bariere expressed concern that the incident occurred only weeks after the killing of Mr. Clement Deegbara J. of Kpon Community.

He said the recurring attacks suggested that criminal elements were attempting to undermine the peace and security of the local government area.

The council chairman called on security agencies to intensify operations across Khana to ensure those responsible are identified, arrested and prosecuted.

He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while supporting security agencies with credible information to aid ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident and said an investigation has commenced.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Grace Iringe-Koko Agabe, said the victim’s body had been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

She said: “The body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while a full investigation has commenced to identify and bring those responsible to justice.

“Although the family of the deceased has not yet lodged a formal complaint with the Police, they are strongly advised to do so, as this will aid ongoing investigations and facilitate the prompt administration of justice.

“The Rivers State Police Command remains committed to ensuring that all those connected with this incident are identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

By Gift Chapi Odekina, Abuja

The House of Representatives Committee investigating the alleged operation of a fake presidential agency on Monday ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disun (IGP), to produce the alleged mastermind, Mr Adeyemi Martin, before it on Wednesday by 12 noon.

The committee issued the directive after the Nigeria Police Force confirmed key aspects of its ongoing criminal investigation, including petitions from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President alleging that Adeyemi fraudulently presented himself as the director-general of the purported Presidential Economic Advisory Council and the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council.

Chairman of the committee, Rep Yusuf Gagdi, ruled that Adeyemi’s appearance had become necessary because of the gravity of the allegations and their implications for individuals and government institutions.

“This committee clearly needs the suspected DG to appear before this committee,” Gagdi said.

“People’s names are involved. People’s integrity is involved. Institutional names are involved. Institutional integrity is involved.”

He added: “It is not an option now. We will need him here to confirm some documents to us in such a way that will not undermine our investigation to enable us to submit our report on time.”

The committee thereafter directed its clerk to formally write to the Inspector-General of Police.

“The committee hereby resolves that the Inspector-General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria… kindly present Mr Adeyemi Martin on Wednesday by 12 noon. That is the ruling of the committee,” Gagdi declared.

Earlier, an assistant commissioner of police, Basir Abdullahi, who represented the Inspector General of Police, informed lawmakers that while criminal investigations were still ongoing, the police had already filed an eight-count charge before the Federal High Court against the suspect.

“The Nigerian Police Force investigated part of this case late last year and filed eight-count charges before a Federal High Court. The case is ongoing,” the officer said.

He added that the suspect had been arrested and arraigned, warning that disclosing further details could prejudice ongoing investigations and judicial proceedings.

“We don’t want to say things that are under investigation. It is definitely going to prejudice the ongoing investigation and make people have opinions that may prejudge the outcome of an investigation or judicial decision,” he stated.

Despite the caution, the committee sought confirmation of documentary evidence already in its possession.

The police confirmed that on October 17, 2025, the chief of staff to the president petitioned security agencies over allegations against Adeyemi, leading to investigations that culminated in criminal charges bordering on conspiracy and fraud.

The police also confirmed receiving another petition alleging that Adeyemi falsely paraded himself as the director-general of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council and the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council.

According to the police, the petition further alleged that the suspect used the purported office to secure accommodation at the Federal Secretariat, sought approval to recruit about 300 staff, attempted to insert about $1.3 billion into the 2026 Appropriation Act for the non-existent agency and planned a World Investment Summit under the platform of the purported council.

One of the major moments during the hearing came when the committee compared signatures on documents allegedly issued by the Office of the Chief of Staff to the president with signatures on authentic correspondence obtained from the police.

Asked whether the signatures matched, the police witness responded unequivocally: “They are not the same.”

The committee chairman said the discrepancy reinforced concerns that official State House documents may have been forged.

“So, it is not only a letter that was suspected to be forged,” Umoh said.

“We are dealing with documents that include what is said to be a forged Act of the National Assembly in an attempt to establish a fake agency.”

He disclosed that investigators had so far identified about 29 allegedly forged documents, including purported approvals from the State House, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Ministry of Finance and other government institutions.

According to him, several of the affected agencies had already appeared before the committee and disowned the documents attributed to them.

The chairman, however, stressed that the committee deliberately avoided compelling the police to disclose details capable of undermining ongoing criminal investigations.

“We are avoiding a situation whereby they will be pushed… to make statements that will undermine their ongoing investigation,” he said.

He assured us that the House investigation would proceed independently and that its final report could recommend further action by security agencies.

The Secretary-General of Afenifere, Chief Sola Ebiseni, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway passes through the coastal communities of Ondo State, declaring that the current alignment distorts the project’s original vision.

Ebiseni, in an open letter to the President, said he was writing on behalf of the Ilaje-Yoruba people and other coastal communities in Ondo.

He argued that the state’s over 100-kilometre oil-producing coastline was unjustifiably bypassed despite the highway being conceived as a true coastal road.

According to him, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a historic national infrastructure project intended to connect Nigeria’s Atlantic coastline from Lagos to Calabar and should remain faithful to that objective.

Ebiseni traced the historical significance of the Ilaje coastline, noting that the area formed part of the former Lagos Colony during the colonial era.

He said historical records showed telegraph poles and cables were installed along the corridor, and British colonial administrators undertook official tours through the area.

Ebiseni dismissed any ecological justification for excluding the Ondo coastline, citing major engineering feats such as Victoria Island and the Eko Atlantic City project as proof that such terrain could be developed.

The Afenifere scribe expressed concern that consultations on the highway in Ondo were held in Akure rather than in the affected coastal communities, adding that the proposed alignment was neither presented to nor discussed with local stakeholders.

While commending the Federal Government’s progress on the project, Ebiseni acknowledged ongoing construction from Victoria Island toward Ondo through communities including Irokun, Agerige, Uhapen, Olopo and Ipare.

However, he alleged the alignment deliberately veered inland, leaving out more populated Atlantic coastal communities.

He linked this to the Federal Government’s approval of a 100-kilometre extension connecting Edo State.

Ebiseni stressed that the coastal communities were not opposed to development in neighbouring states but insisted that Ondo’s coastline should not be sacrificed to achieve that.

He said connecting Ondo’s coastal areas would unlock economic opportunities, reduce coastal erosion around Aiyetoro, and stimulate development across Ilaje, Ikale and neighbouring communities.

The Afenifere Secretary General proposed that the highway continue along the Ondo coastline to Oghoye in Warri before linking with the Edo section through an alternative alignment across Delta and onward to Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

While describing the project as potentially the most impactful legacy project in the Niger Delta, Ebiseni, urged President Tinubu to ensure it fulfilled its original coastal vision.

He however, congratulated the President and Nigeria’s security agencies on recent successes against insurgency and terrorism, reaffirming the loyalty and support of the coastal communities while expressing hope that the Ondo coastline would ultimately be integrated into the landmark highway project.End

PORT HARCOURT — The Presiding Pastor of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has criticised the proposed 2026 traffic offence and anti-preaching bill, urging lawmakers to drop the initiative and focus on addressing the country’s pressing socio-economic and security challenges.

Speaking during a Sunday service in Port Harcourt, Ibiyeomie argued that the proposed legislation, which he said seeks to restrict preaching in public transport, could infringe on Christians’ right to evangelise and create unnecessary tension.

He called on the government to ensure that all religious groups are treated fairly, saying Christians should enjoy the same freedoms accorded to others.

“If you want peace, allow Christians alone as we allow Muslims,” he said.

Reacting to reports that preaching in buses could be prohibited under the proposed legislation, the cleric expressed strong opposition to the measure, warning against policies he believes could limit religious expression.

He said any attempt to restrict public evangelism could lead to avoidable disputes and urged the authorities to reconsider the proposal.

Ibiyeomie also advised Christians to become more involved in politics and governance in order to safeguard their interests and participate in shaping public policy.

The cleric further urged the government to prioritise tackling insecurity, economic hardship and poverty, rather than pursuing policies he believes are of less immediate concern to Nigerians.

Commenting on the country’s economic situation, he expressed concern over the hardship being experienced by many citizens and called for greater attention to issues affecting livelihoods.

He also compared the current situation with previous administrations, stating his opinion that Nigeria was better off under former President Goodluck Jonathan than it is today.

The proposed anti-preaching bill has continued to generate public debate, with supporters and critics expressing differing views on its potential impact on religious freedom and public order.

An unspecified number of people are feared dead, while several others remain trapped after a three-storey students’ hostel collapsed in Oko, the host community of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, is located beside Tonimas Filling Station in the Amokpala area behind the institution.

The cause of the collapse has yet to be determined.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with volunteers, operatives of the Anambra State Police Command, the Anambra State Fire Service, and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) working to clear the rubble and rescue those trapped.

Some victims have been pulled from the debris and taken to a hospital in Oko for treatment, while bodies recovered from the scene have been deposited in a mortuary. Authorities have yet to confirm the number of casualties.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said police personnel and other security agencies responded immediately after receiving a distress call and secured the area to prevent further danger.

In a statement, Ikenga said: “The Anambra State Police-led joint security team assures ongoing rescue operations following the late-night incident on Sunday, July 26, 2026, involving the collapse of a three-storey building known as Elite Five Star Lodge, located beside Tonimas Filling Station, Amokpala, in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.

“On receipt of the distress report, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, immediately mobilised to the scene, secured the area to prevent further danger, and coordinated rescue efforts.

“The Command notes that rescue operations are ongoing to reach other persons who may still be trapped, as the number of casualties or affected persons cannot yet be confirmed.

“Some injured victims have been rescued from the debris and evacuated to a hospital in Oko, where they are currently receiving medical attention.”

The police urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and stay away from the scene to allow emergency responders unrestricted access as rescue efforts continue.

PORT HARCOURT — The Presiding Pastor of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has warned proponents of the controversial 2026 traffic offence and anti-preaching bill to “leave Christians alone,” saying the proposed law is capable of triggering chaos in the country.

Speaking during a Sunday service in Port Harcourt, the cleric described the bill as “stupid” and accused lawmakers of targeting Christians while ignoring other pressing national issues such as insecurity, hunger and poverty.

He also urged Christians to participate actively in politics to protect their interests.

He spoke against the controversial bill, saying, “If you want peace, allow Christians alone as we allow Muslims.

“Are you aware that they said you should not preach in buses? That is a stupid law.

“I will not be alive to see Christ being humiliated.

“Nigeria has got things so wrong. The so-called men in the assembly, I don’t know where they kept their brains. If they attempt that in Nigeria, that we will not preach in buses, tomorrow they will say we should not share handbills.

“When they put loudspeakers outside, nobody is talking, and Christians are keeping quiet. I will never be alive to see Christianity being humiliated in Nigeria, never.

“If they do it, some of us will leave. If you want peace, since we allow the Muslims to put microphones and nobody shouted, Christians will preach.

“If they say Christians should not preach, then they go their way, we go our way. But I will not be alive as a preacher not to see this gospel being preached. They should not promote such laws if they don’t want chaos in Nigeria.”

He called on the government to attend to more disturbing challenges Nigerians are faced with.

He said, “Go ask your president if I have taken one dime from him, so I can talk. You can’t take money from a man and talk to him. Ask him if I have taken one naira from him.

“So listen, if they don’t wake up and stop all this rubbish law, South Africans are killing Nigerians, nobody is talking.

“Nigeria is one of the poorest nations on earth, nobody is talking. They are even saying we are not suffering, when people cannot feed and they say we have the best time in Nigeria.

“Nigeria is in the most difficult time and all of them are keeping quiet. When Jonathan was there, they were shouting, ‘it has come’. Now everyone is quiet.

“Even preachers are quiet, all the preachers are quiet because they know the truth. I will never be a tribalistic preacher.

“As we allow Muslims, also allow other Christians. I have told you before, they want to turn Nigeria to an Islamic nation.

“When Jonathan was there, they were rioting. Now who is rioting? Even a madman knows that Jonathan was better than this.”

Big Brother Naija Season 11 housemate, Temi Nkem, sparked an early disagreement in the house on Sunday after expressing frustration over what she described as her fellow contestants’ inability to understand her English while reading Big Brother’s instructions.

The incident unfolded on the opening day of the “Show Ya Sef” edition of the reality show after Big Brother directed one of the housemates to visit the diary room and collect the week’s guidelines for the rest of the contestants.

Temi Nkem, who is said to have been educated in the United Kingdom, volunteered for the task and returned to read the instructions to the house.

However, several housemates appeared confused as she spoke, saying they found it difficult to understand her delivery. The misunderstanding quickly disrupted the exercise and created a tense atmosphere among the contestants.

Clearly irritated by the reactions, Temi Nkem confronted her fellow housemates, saying, “Are you children that you don’t understand English? How is it possible that you don’t understand English?”

The 21-year-old had said she was bringing confidence and strategy into the BBNaija house.

The US has reminded international visitors that the length of time they are allowed to remain in the country is determined by a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer upon arrival, not by the expiration date on their visa.

In a public advisory, US authorities urged travellers to check their I-94 arrival and departure record to confirm the date by which they must leave the country.

“Reminder! The length of time an international visitor is allowed to stay in United States is determined by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer upon your arrival, NOT your visa expiration date,” the notice stated.

According to the advisory, visitors should verify their authorised period of stay by checking the “admit until” date listed on their electronic I-94 record.

The clarification comes as many travellers mistakenly assume they can remain in the US until the expiration date printed on their visa.

However, immigration authorities explained that a visa only allows a person to travel to a US port of entry and request admission.

The final decision on whether a visitor is admitted into the country and how long they may remain rests with the CBP officer at the port of entry.

Travellers who stay beyond the date authorised on their I-94 risk violating US immigration laws, which could affect future visa applications or travel to the United States.

US authorities encouraged all international visitors to review their I-94 records after entering the country to ensure they understand the duration of their approved stay and avoid overstaying their permitted period.

Chad announced on Monday it planned to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, saying its effectiveness was “limited” and uneven.

“This decision is the result of an in-depth review of the functioning of the International Criminal Court since it began operating in 2002, as well as its record whose effectiveness remains limited and uneven across different regions,” a government spokesman said in a statement.

By Ayobami Okerinde

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has dismissed criticism of Argentina’s conduct at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the team has “no real reason” to be hated despite the controversies surrounding their performance.

Argentina came under intense scrutiny during the tournament over its aggressive style of play, disciplinary issues and conduct in the aftermath of its 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. Critics also accused the Albiceleste of benefiting from favourable refereeing decisions throughout the competition.

The backlash intensified after Argentina’s players turned their backs as Spain lifted the World Cup trophy, while several on-field altercations during the final further damaged the team’s image.

Reacting to the criticism, Martinez defended his teammates, insisting the accusations were unfair.

“The anti-Argentina campaign? I’m a little annoyed because they have no real reason to hate us,” he told Foot Mercato.

“They say we’re arrogant, but that says more about them than about us. We have always been very respectful towards every opponent we have faced.”

Martinez is not the only Argentine player to reject the criticism. Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez also defended the team’s World Cup campaign, saying the squad represented the country “in the best possible way” despite the controversies that overshadowed its run to the final.

Fernandez was sent off late in the final against Spain after receiving a second yellow card for a challenge on Pau Cubarsi, while teammate Leandro Paredes was later investigated by FIFA over his conduct during the post-match celebrations.

Argentina also drew criticism after displaying a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”) following their semi-final victory over England, reigniting tensions over the disputed South Atlantic islands.

Despite the criticism, Fernandez insisted the team gave everything for the national jersey throughout the tournament.

“As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result,” Fernandez wrote on Instagram.

“For years, this group has represented the team in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up.”

Former Italy playmaker Andrea Pirlo, who was favoured for the national coaching post, expressed his bitterness on Monday over the debate which has led to him no longer being a candidate.

The 47-year-old had, to many Italian fans’ surprise, become the favourite to be tasked with reviving the national side’s fortunes after they failed for the third successive time to qualify for the World Cup.

He had benefitted from Spanish great Pep Guardiola declining an offer.

Whilst Pirlo had a stellar playing career — including being a key member of the 2006 World Cup-winning side — his coaching CV is short on success.

A contract with a Russian betting firm had only added fuel to misgivings.

“(I) learned yesterday evening that I am no longer a candidate to be coach of the national side,” he wrote in a post on Instagram, adding that he felt the need to “clarify certain points”.

According to Italian media, he was due to be named this week despite his only trophy success since turning to coaching in 2020 being a single Italian Cup.

Presently coach of United Arab Emirates side Dubai United, he failed to deliver when in charge of Juventus — for whom he had sparkled as a player — Sampdoria and Turkish outfit Karagumruk.

“I have followed with great bitterness the debate surrounding my candidacy,” he wrote, whilst thanking Italy’s technical director and former AC Milan teammate Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo for their “esteem and confidence (in him)”.

“I regret that a decision based on sporting criteria rapidly became a public controversy, in which intentions and ideas which do not reflect my personality were attributed to me.”

According to Italian media, whilst Leonardo and Maldini preferred Pirlo to the prickly but also more successful Antonio Conte, newly-installed federation chief Giovanni Malago had been against the appointment from the start.

Conte — who has won the Serie A title with three different clubs and also the Premier League with Chelsea — is back in the frame for the job of coaching the Euro 2020 champions, according to la Gazzetta dello Sport.

…uncover suspected trailer-dismantling syndicate

By James Ogunnaike, Abeokuta

Detectives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested an absconding trailer driver and four other suspects for allegedly stealing and dismantling a trailer, uncovering what authorities described as a suspected criminal syndicate specialising in dismantling stolen trailers and disposing of their parts.

The suspects were identified as Temitope Omotayo Odulaja, 47; Segun Suleiman, 27; Haruna Olaogun, 49; Jimoh Wasiu, 42; and Quazzim Suleiman, 49.

Police said the operation, carried out by detectives attached to the Ifo Divisional Headquarters, also led to the recovery of parts of the stolen trailer, including its trailer head, while investigations uncovered a network allegedly involved in dismantling stolen trailers and selling their components.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the investigation was initiated after the owner of the trailer reported that his driver had disappeared with the vehicle on June 6, 2026.

“The owner reported at the Ifo Divisional headquarters that his driver had absconded with the trailer, and all efforts made to trace both the driver and the vehicle proved unsuccessful,” Babaseyi said.

He explained that following the complaint, detectives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Olabisi Kamorudeen, launched an intelligence-driven investigation and deployed technical resources to track the suspect.

The police spokesperson disclosed that on July 24, detectives traced and arrested the fleeing driver, Odulaja, in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

“Following his arrest, he provided useful information that significantly advanced the investigation,” he stated.

Babaseyi said the investigation subsequently led detectives to Ijebu-Ode, where four additional suspects were arrested on July 25 at different locations over their alleged involvement in the criminal operation.

Preliminary findings, according to the Command, revealed that the stolen trailer had been dismantled shortly after it was stolen, with its parts allegedly sold or otherwise unlawfully disposed of.

“Detectives have recovered parts of the stolen trailer, including the trailer head, while photographs of the dismantled trailer have been taken as exhibits,” the statement said.

“The investigation has further uncovered a suspected trailer-dismantling syndicate, and efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining parts of the trailer, identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate, establish the full extent of its activities, and recover additional exhibits.”

The police said investigations are continuing and assured that all those found culpable would be prosecuted.

“Investigation is ongoing, and all persons found culpable at the conclusion of the investigation will be charged to court in accordance with the law,” Babaseyi added.

Commending the detectives for the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, described the arrests as a major breakthrough in the Command’s fight against organized vehicle theft and related crimes.

“The arrest of the fleeing trailer driver, the subsequent arrest of his accomplices, the recovery of parts of the stolen trailer, and the uncovering of the suspected trailer-dismantling syndicate underscore the Command’s unwavering commitment to intelligence-led policing and its determination to identify, disrupt, and dismantle criminal networks operating within Ogun State,” the Commissioner said.

Ojajuni urged transport operators, fleet owners, logistics companies, and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities to the police.

He assured residents that the Command would continue to intensify intelligence-led operations and proactive policing strategies aimed at safeguarding lives and property while ensuring that criminal elements are brought to justice.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has hit back at World Cup critics, claiming they were “spreading hate and false rumours” and arguing the tournament delivered “only joy and happiness”.

In a long open letter published on Monday, Infantino urged detractors to “take a moment to reflect, meditate, pray” after a tournament marked by controversies ranging from ticket pricing to visa issues.

“Sorry that you were so consumed by hate and criticism that you missed it all,” Infantino wrote in a post shared on his Instagram account and FIFA’s official channels.

“To those behind their pens and papers, behind their screens, spreading hate and false rumours, I want to say that while you are sitting behind, we at FIFA are on the front lines organising, working hard, and delivering the best show in the world.

“We experienced no violence, no incidents, 100% safety and security, only joy and happiness!

The build-up to the World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States was dominated by fears over sky-high prices, geopolitical tension, the shadow of conflict and the threat of brutal summer heat across the three host nations.

Iran’s participation against the backdrop of war with the United States, along with concerns over Haiti’s domestic crisis and the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, brought renewed scrutiny to visa and travel restrictions.

Somali referee Omar Artan became arguably the highest-profile casualty of President Donald Trump’s hardline immigration crackdown, when he was denied entry to the United States.

Infantino, however, defended FIFA’s handling of the tournament.

“While you spread hatred, we worked tirelessly to unite two countries at war. Iran entered the United States without incident or conflict,” he said.

“The Iranian team received visas to enter because football is about peace. It’s not about politics.”

“Countries facing serious health issues or other challenges were granted visas,” Infantino added.

“You mentioned the few people denied visas and overlooked the millions who were approved, from all parts of the world.”

– ‘Most oppressed’ –

His remarks contrasted sharply with those of Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei, who said his side had been the “most oppressed” team at the World Cup. Star striker Mehdi Taremi called his team’s treatment at the tournament a “disaster”.

Infantino also addressed criticism of officiating at the World Cup after it emerged Trump had personally asked the FIFA president to review a one-match suspension handed to US striker Folarin Balogun, allowing him to face Belgium in the last 16.

European football’s governing body UEFA were among those who were critical of the Balogun affair terming it “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable” and said it “crossed a red line”.

“Your dissatisfaction with a few decisions made by the competent authorities is understandable, but please refer to public records: such decisions are common in some of the most important leagues,” said Infantino addressing his critics.

“Indeed, ‘arguable’ referees’ decisions or ‘strange’ disciplinary rulings such as for instance potentially mistaken red or yellow cards or subsequent decisions not to ban players in certain situations are routine and widely accepted in some of the biggest leagues worldwide.

“It’s curious that the same countries employing these practices are the ones criticising.”

Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the killing of scores of people in Southern Kaduna, declaring that the attack is a reminder of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s failure to protect lives and property.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, on Monday, Atiku described the killings in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State as “heartbreaking and unacceptable”, insisting that “every life lost is a painful indictment of a government that has repeatedly promised security but continues to preside over an expanding landscape of bloodshed.”

The former Vice President said it was troubling that while Nigerians mourned yet another massacre, senior government officials had continued “criss-crossing television studios and social media platforms, brandishing what they describe as an unverified claim of a letter of commendation from the United States Government”.

Drawing a contrast, Atiku noted that the United States government had recently committed about $750,000 to evacuate a single American citizen stranded on a remote Pacific island after a potential exposure to hantavirus, a gesture he said illustrated the difference between “governments that regard every citizen’s life as sacred and those that appear more concerned about international applause than the security of their own people”.

He said the people of Southern Kaduna and all Nigerians did not need letters of praise from foreign capitals but needed security, stressing that they should be able to “sleep without fear, travel without anxiety, cultivate their farms in peace and raise their children without the constant threat of terrorists, bandits and other violent criminals”.

According to the statement, governance is not a public relations exercise and cannot be measured by diplomatic soundbites or claimed commendations but by the safety of citizens and the government’s ability to protect them from harm. It added that until that constitutional obligation is fulfilled, “every celebration of external praise rings hollow”.

Atiku called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security architecture, saying Nigerians deserved more than routine condemnations after every attack but rather intelligence-driven security operations, swift justice for perpetrators and proactive measures to prevent recurring tragedies.

He extended condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Southern Kaduna, praying for the repose of the souls of the departed and the speedy recovery of the injured.

Atiku expressed hope that the massacre was not politically motivated but urged security agencies to identify, apprehend and prosecute those responsible while strengthening security around vulnerable communities as the country approaches another political season, warning that the protection of innocent lives “must never be sacrificed on the altar of politics”.

“History will not remember how many letters of commendation a government claimed to have received. It will remember whether it protected its people when they needed protection the most. Today, the blood of innocent Nigerians speaks far louder than any unverified claim of international praise,” the statement said.

By Daniel Abia

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rivers State Chapter, has raised the alarm over alleged intimidation of the opposition political parties especially with the ban on all forms of gathering in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.

The party noted that the directive issued by the Chairman of the council, Hon Charles Wobodo, purporting to prohibit all gatherings within the Local Government Area except with his personal written approval has become a great concern to lovers of democracy.

In a statement issued on Monday by the publicity secretary, Rivers State, Barr Chizy Enyi, Esq, ADC admitted that it acknowledged the genuine security challenges confronting parts of Ikwerre Local Government, including the recent incidents of killings, kidnappings and attacks on innocent citizens. “We sympathize with the families of those who have lost loved ones and support every lawful effort aimed at restoring peace and security.

“However, while insecurity must be confronted decisively, it must never become a pretext for eroding constitutional democracy or suppressing the legitimate rights of law-abiding citizens.”

The statement said that the “directive raises fundamental constitutional questions. The rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of association and political participation are guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. These rights cannot be subjected to the personal approval of any Local Government Chairman.”

It said more troubling is the fact that the directive did not emerge in isolation. “For several months, members of the African Democratic Congress in Ikwerre Local Government have repeatedly faced intimidation, threats and disruption of lawful political meetings. This latest directive unfortunately reinforces the perception that an attempt is being made to institutionalize restrictions on legitimate political activities under the guise of security.

“ADC is equally concerned that if this directive is allowed to stand unchallenged, it could become a template for similar actions in other Local Government Areas, thereby shrinking the democratic space as Rivers State prepares for the 2027 General Elections.

“We wish to remind all public office holders that security is achieved by identifying, arresting and prosecuting criminals, not by imposing blanket restrictions on the constitutional freedoms of innocent citizens.”

The party called on the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government, Hon Charles Wobodo, to immediately withdraw the “unconstitutional directive”, calling on the Rivers State Commissioner of Police and all security agencies to ensure that every registered political party enjoys equal protection under the law and that no lawful political activity is unlawfully disrupted.

It also enjoined the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations and all democratic stakeholders to closely monitor developments capable of undermining free political participation in Rivers State.

The statement concluded that ADC remains committed to peaceful, issue-based and law-abiding political engagement. “We shall continue to exercise our constitutional rights peacefully and responsibly and will resist every attempt to intimidate or silence democratic opposition through lawful means. The security of our people and the preservation of our democracy are complementary objectives. Rivers State deserves both,” the statement said.

Iran’s foreign ministry on Monday said it was not currently involved in negotiations with the United States, despite a halt in recent fighting between the two sides.

“Mediators may convey messages from the American side to us regarding current developments in the region. But at present, we are not engaged in any negotiations with the United States,” ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said at a weekly press briefing.

“Claims that Iran has requested negotiations are fabrications that the other side circulates from time to time,” he added.

Hostilities resumed between Iran and the United States earlier this month after diplomatic efforts collapsed amid an impasse regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

Fighting has nonetheless paused since early Saturday, following 13 days of exchanges of fire between the two sides.

Baqaei criticised the United States, saying its conduct in recent years has “resembled that of a mafia gang that adheres to no rules or laws”.

“So long as such behaviour by the United States continues, we cannot be hopeful about the emergence of a reasonable process,” he added.

Iran insists on retaining control over the management of the Strait of Hormuz, including the collection of service fees, while keeping Oman involved as a coastal state.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have turned back multiple vessels in recent days, including six earlier on Monday, that attempted to transit the strait outside the route designated by the Islamic republic.

On Monday, Baqaei reiterated that Washington had nothing to do with recent talks with Oman over the administration of the Strait of Hormuz.

“These talks have no connection with the United States. They are a bilateral matter between Iran and Oman, and they are continuing,” Baqaei said, adding that the waterway “remains closed”.

By Dayo Johnson

The Students’ Union of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, AAUA, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ondo State government to resolve the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, warning that failure to act could trigger mass action by students.

In a statement signed by President Falagbade Greatness and General Secretary Amos Oluwatimileyin, the union said the industrial action, now in its 14th day, has paralysed academic activities and left thousands of students stranded.

“This prolonged strike has brought academic activities to a complete standstill, further disrupting the university’s academic calendar and creating an atmosphere of uncertainty, anxiety, and frustration among thousands of students,” the statement said.

The union lamented that the shutdown has delayed graduation timelines and subjected students to emotional, psychological and financial hardship.

“Many students have been compelled to vacate the university environment due to the absence of a clear timeline for the resolution of the dispute. Others who remain on campus continue to endure hardship while awaiting resumption,” it added.

The union called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and relevant authorities to immediately engage ASUU-AAUA leadership to ensure a prompt resolution.

“We have exhausted the two Cs of Aluta and we are left with no other option than to invoke the last C of Aluta,” the union said, issuing a 72-hour ultimatum for a “clear, practical, and satisfactory response.”

It warned that failure to demonstrate genuine commitment would force the union to mobilise students for “all lawful, peaceful, and democratic actions necessary to protect the educational rights and collective interests of AAUA students.”

The union, however, said the statement was “a sincere appeal born out of frustration, uncertainty, and hardship” and not a threat.

Reacting, the university management said the strike “is receiving the attention of the Ondo State Government and will be resolved soon.”

Deputy Registrar, Information, Protocol and Public Relations, Mr. Sola Imoru, urged students to avoid actions capable of escalating tensions, noting that efforts were underway to end the industrial action.

Imoru said the ultimatum was unnecessary because the governor had already approved a special intervention fund to enable the institution to meet its financial obligations. He added that the development had earlier been communicated to the Students’ Union leadership.

He appealed to students to remain patient while the payment process was concluded, expressing optimism that normal academic activities would soon resume.

Imoru also advised the union to seek clarification on issues affecting the institution before making public statements, stressing that regular consultation would prevent misunderstandings.

The management reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, transparency and constructive engagement with all stakeholders.
