The Police headquarters said on Sunday that Police operatives rescued 42 kidnapped victims, arrested 96 suspects victims in intelligence-led operations conducted across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory between September 26 and October 2, 2026.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Ineidu, who disclosed this in an operational report said the operations also led to the recovery of 16 firearms, 31 rounds of live ammunition and 16 vehicles, while two armed suspects were killed during the operations.

Iniedu said the operations were conducted under the strategic leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, as the Force sustained its intelligence-led and community-based policing strategy.

He said the 96 suspects were arrested in connection with various offences, including kidnapping, armed robbery, homicide, banditry, cultism, terrorism, cattle rustling and other criminal activities.

He said the achievements went beyond statistics, noting that the operations had resulted in the rescue of victims, disruption of criminal networks and improved security in affected communities.

According to the report, police operatives, tactical teams and personnel of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto State foiled a bandit attack and rescued 30 kidnapped victims.

The bandits had reportedly blocked Katuru Village Junction and attacked vehicles conveying passengers returning from the weekly market at Tidibale Village before abducting them.

The security operatives engaged the attackers in a gun duel, forcing them to flee into a nearby forest and abandon their victims.

The 30 victims were rescued unhurt, while two persons who sustained gunshot wounds were taken to hospital for treatment.

In Rivers State, police operatives attached to the Eliozu Division intercepted a suspected kidnap gang following a high-speed chase towards Rumuokoro.

The operatives rescued a kidnapped victim and arrested one suspect, while an AK-47 rifle, three rounds of live ammunition and a tricycle were recovered.

In Gombe State, a joint operation by the police, military, Department of State Services, hunters and vigilantes in Ribado Ward, through Bajoga in Funakaye Local Government Area, led to the arrest of four suspects and rescue of two kidnapped victims.

The operation also resulted in the recovery of three motorcycles, while operational pressure reportedly forced fleeing gang members to release another victim the following day.

In Kogi State, joint security forces rescued a telecoms worker who had been abducted by armed kidnappers dressed in military camouflage.

The victim was part of a telecoms mast maintenance team abducted in the Kabba area. Four members of the team had escaped, while the rescued worker remained in captivity.

The security forces sustained bush-combing and rescue operations, forcing the abductors to flee after teargas was deployed and enabling the victim to be rescued

In Ondo State, operatives of the State Intelligence-led Violent Crime Response Unit, acting on credible intelligence, arrested two suspected members of an armed robbery syndicate in Akure.

The suspects allegedly confessed to being
members of a four-man syndicate operating in Akure and its environs.

A subsequent raid on their hideout in the Olufoam area led to the recovery of a locally made four-round revolver, criminal charms, a laptop, motorcycle mirrors and a vehicle number plate.

A third suspect was arrested the following day, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining member of the syndicate.

In Delta State, police operatives rescued a 23-year-old woman who had been abducted and held for ransom.

The victim was reportedly abducted on September 27, with the suspects demanding N245,000 for her release.

Following a report lodged with the Anti-Vice Squad in Asaba, operatives tracked the suspects to their hideout, rescued the victim, and arrested six suspects comprising three males and three females.

In Anambra State, 13 suspected cultists were arrested during a joint operation by the police and Agunechemba vigilante operatives in Okpoko.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of September 28 following credible intelligence, also led to the recovery of suspected cannabis sativa, other illicit substances and six motorcycles.

In Katsina State, police tactical teams foiled an attempted kidnapping along the Funtua-Zaria Highway at Dankawo Village.

The suspects had reportedly blocked the highway to abduct commuters when operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, APC tactical teams and personnel of the 83 Police Mobile Force engaged them in a gun duel.

The attackers fled into the bush, while subsequent combing operations led to the rescue of four kidnapped victims found inside a truck. Efforts were ongoing to establish the whereabouts of the driver and motor boy and arrest the fleeing suspects.

In another operation in Katsina State, police recovered 159 electric detonators suspected to be components of improvised explosive devices during a stop-and-search operation along the Daura-Kongolam-Maiadua road

The items were reportedly found in two bags inside a Toyota bus travelling from Kano towards Kongolam in Niger Republic. The 70-year-old driver was arrested after he allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the items.

The police said investigations were ongoing to establish the source, destination and intended use of the detonators and identify possible accomplices.

In Benue State, police operatives arrested a suspected cultist who was allegedly threatening people with a firearm at a market square in Aliade.

A search conducted on the suspect led to the recovery of an English pistol with five rounds of live ammunition, a locally fabricated pistol with four cartridges, and charms.

Ineidu said all suspects arrested in the various operations remained in custody as investigations continued, while efforts were being made to apprehend other fleeing members of the criminal groups.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to deepening intelligence-led policing, strengthening collaboration with communities and other security agencies, and sustaining operational pressure against criminal networks.

The FPRO assured Nigerians that the Force would continue to protect lives and property, respond to threats to public safety, and bring criminal suspects to justice.

The Osun State Government has filed an application before the Federal High Court in Lagos seeking to set aside an ex-parte order freezing its accounts over a $13.9 million and N157.5 million arbitration award in favour of Gamji Nigeria Company Limited.

Gamji, a contractor handling a water project in the state, had obtained the order directing the freezing of Osun State Government accounts with several commercial banks over the arbitration award.

However, the state government, in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, alleged that the order was obtained through concealment of material facts.

Alimi said the application to set aside the order was filed before the Federal High Court on October 2, 2026.

He added that the arbitration award Gamji sought to enforce was also being challenged by the state government over what it described as irregularities in the arbitration process.

According to him, the ex-parte order issued on September 9, 2026, referenced an alleged arbitral award said to have been made against the state in July 2024.

“In fact, it was reported that the purported award which the ex-parte order of September 9, 2026 referenced does not exist, as there was no arbitral award made against the state government in July 2024.

“The only arbitral award against the state government was in July 2026, and the said award is presently being challenged before the Lagos State High Court by the state government’s legal team,” he said.

Giving the background to the dispute, Alimi said the contractual disagreement dated back to 2017, during the administration of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, when the state rejected a variation request submitted by Gamji.

He said the dispute centred on whether the state government was indebted to Gamji to the tune of $15,982,638.22.

“The matter proceeded for arbitration which was deliberately mismanaged and handled to favour Gamji Nigeria Company Limited, while denying the state government fair hearing and full participation in the arbitration process as mandated by best practice in the arbitration process,” the statement alleged.

Alimi said the state government had challenged what it described as irregularities in the arbitration proceedings and the final arbitral award before the Lagos State High Court.

He further disclosed that counsel to the state government had filed the suit seeking to set aside the arbitral award at the Lagos State High Court on September 1, 2026.

He said the suit was filed before Gamji subsequently approached the Federal High Court and obtained the ex-parte order freezing the state government’s accounts.

The state government maintained that its legal team would continue to pursue the matter before the relevant courts.

DAMATURU — No fewer than 1,020 residents have been affected and 278 shelters damaged by flash floods that swept through six communities and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) disclosed this in a flash flood incident report released on Sunday, October 4, 2026, by its Director of Search and Rescue Operations, Dr M.I. Jalo, in Damaturu.

According to the agency, the incident, triggered by heavy rainfall on September 2, affected 143 households across Lawanti Gana, Bulama Gremari, Kokari IDP Camp, Fulatari, Tsohuwar Kasuwa and Bulama Adam.

The Kokari IDP Camp recorded the highest impact, with 48 households comprising 232 people affected and 63 shelters damaged.

Lawanti Gana followed with 30 affected households involving 249 people, while 68 shelters were damaged.

Bulama Gremari recorded 18 affected households involving 149 people and 41 damaged shelters, while Fulatari had 17 households and 141 people affected, with 38 shelters damaged.

Tsohuwar Kasuwa recorded 16 affected households involving 133 people, with 36 shelters damaged, while Bulama Adam had 14 affected households comprising 116 people and 32 damaged shelters.

Jalo said no deaths or injuries were recorded in the incident.

“No deaths or injuries were recorded, and no public buildings were reported damaged,” he said.

He, however, said the agency was prioritising the Kokari IDP Camp and the most vulnerable families as emergency response efforts continued.

“Yobe SEMA is actively coordinating with line MDAs and key partners to deliver immediate assistance, prioritising the Kokari IDP Camp and the most vulnerable families,” Jalo said.

The agency urged residents to remain vigilant in the event of further rainfall and move to higher ground if water levels rise.

It also warned residents against entering flooded areas or contaminated waterways and advised affected communities to boil or treat drinking water and maintain regular handwashing to reduce the risk of water-borne diseases.

SEMA further urged residents to report additional damage, missing persons and urgent humanitarian needs, including food, water, shelter materials and medical support, to the agency, LGA Emergency Desk or nearest officials.

Residents were also advised to secure valuables and important documents in dry, elevated locations where possible and cooperate with assessment and relief teams.

The agency said further updates would be issued as the emergency response continues.

Many motorists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called on fuel marketers to further reduce the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol.

The motorists we’re reacting to the decline in oil prices globally.

Dangote Refinery recently reduced its gantry petrol price by N25 per litre, from N1,350 to N1,325, triggering lower retail pump prices at many filling stations across the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Crude oil prices currently hover around 90 dollars per barrel for the U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and about 98 dollars per barrel for the international benchmark, Brent crude.

Checks by NAN in Abuja on Sunday showed that NNPC Ltd. fuel outlets and a few others reduced their pump price by N25 per litre to N1,370, down from between #1,420 per litre and #1,450 per litre.

Similarly, MRS filling stations, which previously sold petrol at ₦1,395 per litre, reduced the price to ₦1,370, while AY Shafa reduced its price from ₦1,430 to ₦1,400 per litre.

However, some marketers were yet to reduce their pump prices.

NAN observed that Afdin Retail Station reduced its petrol price from ₦1,430 to ₦1,400 per litre. A.A. Rano also reduced its price from ₦1,430 to ₦1,400 per litre, while Empire Energies reduced its price from ₦1,450 to ₦1,420 per litre.

Mr Stanley Okezie, a motorist who resides at Gwarinpa, urged fuel marketers to further reduce their pump prices.

Okezie said the decline in crude oil prices should translate into a significant reduction in petrol prices.

He expressed concern over the continued impact of high fuel costs on household expenses and businesses.

“Mr President, during his Independence Day speech said he will do more to address the high cost of living, energy insecurity and other economic challenges being faced by citizens.

“We want the president to take more immediate steps to ease the burden on citizens,” he said.

Mr Daniel Uzor, a motorist, who resides at Kubwa, also urged marketers to further reduce the price of petrol.

Uzor expressed concern over the rising cost of transportation and food among other expenses.

Another motorist, Mr Kenneth Oliver urged marketers to reflect recent reduction of crude oil in the global market  in their pump prices.

Oliver said a reduction in petrol prices would provide relief to road users and other Nigerians.

He said the reduction would also help lower transportation costs, particularly for commercial operators who depend on fuel.

Mr Abdul Lateef, a motorist in Kabusa, urged marketers to ensure consumers felt reductions in their operating and procurement costs.

He appealed to relevant stakeholders in the petroleum industry to promote pricing transparency and ensure consumers benefit from favourable market conditions.

Mr Chinedu Ukadike, the National Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), assured Nigerians that marketers would continue to adjust to prevailing market conditions.

He said marketers would also seek ways to remain competitive and sustain their businesses.

According to him, the major challenge facing independent marketers is market volatility.

ABUJA – Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that contracts awarded by the President Bola Tinubu administration for pipeline security may be linked to the President’s 2027 re-election campaign.

Atiku’s allegation came against the backdrop of N11.2 trillion in ‘other receivables’ from the Federation recorded in the 2025 accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, with the former Vice President demanding a full account of what was spent on pipeline surveillance and who received the money.

In a statement by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication, ADC Presidential Campaign Council, on Sunday, Atiku also questioned the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway contract and the relationship between government contractors and Tinubu’s re-election activities.

“A mother should not have to pray her child survives the journey to school while her government cannot plainly explain the billions it spends on security. Tinubu must answer to the people living with these choices,” Atiku said.

He said NNPCL’s 2024 accounts recorded roughly N17.5 trillion across different claims on the Federation, including petrol under-recovery and other receivables linked to advances and asset protection.

“Nigerians cannot tell from these totals what was spent on pipeline surveillance. What was paid? Who was paid? For what work? Where are the results?” he asked.

Atiku also questioned the scale of the N11.2 trillion receivables against the approximately N3.1 trillion allocated to the Ministry of Defence in 2025, while acknowledging that the figures belonged to different accounting categories.

Turning to the contractors, he cited Tantita’s pipeline-security contract and the campaign activities of its founder, as well as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway contract involving a Chagoury-linked company.

“Tinubu must disclose what these contractors have received from the government and whether they have given a naira, a vehicle or any other support to his re-election. Nigerians will not tighten their belts while the President’s associates collect contracts and the money behind his campaign remains hidden,” he said.

Atiku demanded the release of the documents behind the coastal highway award, including the invitations, competing bids, evaluation and contract, after the government said the project was awarded through restricted bidding.

He also criticised Tinubu’s remarks after returning from his four-week stay in Europe, which the Presidency described as a working vacation.

“Nigerians have had enough of hardship dressed up as reform. Tinubu made life expensive. I will make Nigeria affordable again. Let this be the last year he asks Nigerians to suffer and applaud. In 2027, we will bring this chapter to an end,” Atiku said.

Nine members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing disagreements over insecurity and what they described as inadequate concern for the welfare of residents.

One of the lawmakers, Aliyu Ango Kagara, who represents Talata Mafara South Constituency, said their disagreement with Governor Dauda Lawal was triggered by security challenges in the state and concerns over the plight of the people.

Kagara said the lawmakers’ decision to raise the issue of insecurity on the floor of the Assembly did not go down well with the governor, leading to disagreements and their subsequent suspension.

“Because of the lack of security and lack of concern for the people of Zamfara, we raised the issue in the House, which did not go down well with the governor.

“That was why we had issues with him, which led to our suspension and later defection to the APC,” Kagara said.

The lawmaker, however, said their defection to the APC did not resolve their grievances, alleging that some party leaders had conspired against them and denied them a fair hearing.

The lawmakers who defected are Aliyu Ango Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South; Muktar Nasir, popularly known as Jikan Shehu, representing Kaura Namoda North; Faruk Dosara Musa, representing Maradun I; and Basiru Bello, representing Bungudu West.

Others are Barrister Bashir A. Masama, representing Bukkuyum North; Ibrahim T. Tukur, representing Bakura; Nasiru Abdullahi, representing Maru North; Yusuf Muhammad Anka, representing Anka; and Rt. Hon. Bashar Aliyu, representing Gummi I.

The CityBoy Movement has commenced efforts to register 250,000 youths as members of the group in Osun State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The movement, convened by Mr Seyi Tinubu, is focused on mobilising support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Osun State Executive Committee and local government coordinators of the movement in Osogbo on Sunday, the State Director, Engr. Kayode Sowade, said the group would intensify its grassroots engagement to educate residents about the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration.

Sowade said grassroots residents needed adequate information to enable them make informed decisions in the 2027 presidential election.

“Our target over the next thirty days is to register 250,000 Osun youths as members of the CityBoy Movement. It is an ambitious target, and we must approach it with seriousness.

“Every coordinator must understand the assignment ahead. Every local government structure must be active. We must be organised in how we reach people, document registrations and report our progress,” he said.

Sowade said policies and programmes of the administration, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), CreditCorp, legacy road projects and the unified foreign exchange market, would have limited impact if residents were not adequately informed about them.

“My fellow CityBoys and CityGirls, these initiatives are important, but their impact depends partly on how well people know about them and how effectively they can access them.

“That is one reason the CityBoy Movement must remain active at the grassroots,” he added.

Also speaking, the movement’s patron in Osun State, Mr Femi Oyetola, said the Tinubu administration had awarded several road projects in the state, which he said were contributing to socio-economic activities across the state.

Oyetola urged members of the movement to use their grassroots engagement to highlight the projects and other government initiatives.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done well for us in Osun State, and it is now our responsibility to reciprocate that support with our votes.

“This is not merely a political gathering; it is a call to responsibility,” he said.

Following the inauguration, the State CityBoy Movement Secretariat was also inaugurated by the Director-General of the movement, Mr Oluwatosin Shoga, in the Ogo-Oluwa area of Osogbo.

ASABA — Apprehension has gripped residents of Uzere in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State following reported gas emissions from underground in parts of the oil-producing community.

The development came barely two months after an oil well in the community, within Oil Mining Lease (OML) 30, reportedly erupted.

Residents said uncontrolled emissions had been noticed at several locations, particularly around London Base in Uweye Quarter, where the affected area is located.

They said the intensity of the emissions had increased and appeared to be spreading since they were first noticed.

Sources said bubbling had been observed in water around farmlands and along roadsides, while the substance was reportedly flammable when tested on dry ground.

However, it could not immediately be established whether the emissions were caused by a leak from an underground gas pipeline.

A former President-General of Uzere, Chief Emmanuel Ekebe, said the nearest pipelines were located about 300 to 400 metres from the affected area but were not currently active.

“It is difficult to say, because the nearest is between 300 to 400 metres away and they are not active. There are supposed to be NGC pipelines but NGC gas line is not functional,” he said.

Ekebe said residents were speculating about the possible cause of the emissions, with some suggesting a build-up of gas underground.

“Some people are saying that the development suggests that there is gas build-up in that area and it is looking for escape. Another person said it is a build-up of oxygen, not necessarily gas, but the thing is flammable,” he said.

He said the development had created tension among residents, adding that some landlords were becoming increasingly worried about their safety.

“There is tension and apprehension. People are worried; some of the landlords are saying that they can no longer sleep well,” Ekebe said.

The Vice-President of Uzere community, Engr. Abednego Abugo, described the incident as strange, saying the community had not witnessed such an occurrence before.

Abugo called on the government and the oil company operating in the area to urgently investigate the development and intervene.

“Our lives are not safe,” he said.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) reduced its total liabilities by N19.58 trillion in 2025, even as its assets declined by N17.61 trillion during the year.

According to the company’s 2025 financial results, total liabilities fell by 37.1 per cent from N52.77 trillion in 2024 to N33.19 trillion in 2025.

Similarly, total assets declined by 10.8 per cent from N162.67 trillion in 2024 to N145.06 trillion.

The decline in assets came as NNPC’s revenue fell by 23.4 per cent from N45.08 trillion in 2024 to N34.52 trillion in 2025.

The company attributed the revenue decline principally to lower crude oil prices and reduced white-product volumes following the deregulation of the petroleum products market in 2024.

Crude oil remained NNPC’s largest revenue source, contributing N25.39 trillion in 2025, compared with N29.21 trillion the previous year.

Revenue from petroleum products, however, fell sharply by 77.6 per cent to N2.17 trillion from N9.68 trillion in 2024.

Natural gas revenue provided some relief, rising by 18.3 per cent to N6.15 trillion during the year.

Despite the decline in revenue, NNPC’s profit after tax rose by 33 per cent to N7.2 trillion from N5.4 trillion in 2024.

The company attributed the improved profit to enhanced operational efficiency and cost discipline.

Operating cash flow also increased by 16 per cent to N12.8 trillion, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 22 per cent to N18 trillion.

The financial results also showed that NNPC increased spending on its core assets and obligations.

Purchases of oil and gas properties rose to N6.46 trillion in 2025 from N5.62 trillion in 2024, while expenditure on other property, plant and equipment increased to about N3 trillion from N2.6 trillion.

The company also incurred substantial government-related obligations during the year, including group-level royalties of N11.56 trillion, compared with N2.83 trillion in 2024.

NNPC targets refinery competitiveness

Speaking on the results, NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bayo Ojulari, said the company was determined to make its refineries commercially viable and technologically competitive.

Ojulari said NNPC had learnt lessons from previous approaches to refinery rehabilitation and was now looking beyond what he described as a “quick fix” that could leave the facilities technologically outdated within five to 10 years.

He said technical studies being undertaken with a Chinese company were examining how modern technology, monitoring systems and optimisation could be incorporated into the refineries.

According to him, the Chinese firm deployed 73 top engineers who spent three months assessing the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, describing the commitment as an indication of its interest in the facilities.

“We have not signed a final agreement yet. We believe that once they officially finish the report of their study, they will then come back to us with the proposal,” he said.

Ojulari said NNPC would subsequently enter into commercial and technical negotiations with the company, adding that any final partnership would depend on an agreement between both parties.

“What we can say is that we see strong indications and commitment of their interest as of now in Port Harcourt and Warri refinery,” he said.

He said the Chinese company’s petrochemical facilities were operating at 120 per cent and, in some cases, 140 per cent of their design capacities after bottlenecks were optimised.

Ojulari said NNPC intended to apply similar lessons to ensure that Nigerian refineries could compete on quality, efficiency and profitability.

“We have to be looking forward, not just today,” he said.

On the Kaduna Refinery, the GCEO said technical assessment had yet to commence but expressed optimism that the process would begin under a similar technical equity partnership arrangement.

Union threatens indefinite strike over unpaid salaries, allowances

UMUAHIA — The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Abia State chapter, has commenced a three-day warning strike over alleged non-payment of salaries, leave allowances and other outstanding entitlements owed local government workers.

The strike, which began on Monday, October 5, is expected to end on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

In a statement signed by the State President and Secretary of NULGE, Abia State, Lady Linda Unaeze and Comrade Ezike Ngozi, respectively, the union said the action followed a directive from its national leadership for all state chapters to embark on a three-day warning strike over unresolved welfare issues affecting local government employees.

The union directed all its members across the 17 local government areas of the state to withdraw their services for the duration of the warning strike.

NULGE said it would embark on an indefinite strike if the issues were not resolved after the three-day warning action.

According to the union, its State Administrative Council (SAC), at an emergency meeting on September 30, resolved to fully comply with the national directive.

The union said the strike was necessitated by the alleged non-payment of salaries to verified staff and unresolved access-code issues which it said had prevented some workers from receiving their salaries.

It also listed other grievances to include alleged non-payment of November and December 2020 salary arrears, non-implementation of promotions from 2021 to 2023, and the placement of some workers on what it described as wrong grade levels.

Other outstanding issues cited by the union were alleged non-payment of partial salary arrears after verification and outstanding leave allowances for 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The statement said: “Total compliance with national directive on the three-days warning strike. The warning strike is necessitated by non-payment of verified staff, unresolved access code issues denying workers salaries.

“Non-payment of November/December 2020, two months arrears of salaries, non-implementation of promotions from 2021-2023 and placement of workers on wrong grade levels.

“Non-payment of partial salary arrears after verification, and outstanding leave allowance of 2023, 2024 & 2025 to majority of our members.”

NULGE said the state government had been put on notice that failure to address the grievances after the warning strike would leave the union with no option but to commence an indefinite industrial action, subject to further directives from its national headquarters.

It said the decision was in line with the directive of the union’s national secretariat.

ABUJA — A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory at Maitama has ordered the issuance of a hearing notice for the resumption of trial of a member of the House of Representatives, Amobi Ogah, who is facing trial for allegedly making a false declaration in an affidavit he filed in court.

The lawmaker, who represents the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State, is answering to a five-count charge that the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, preferred against him.

The defendant, who was initially remanded in prison custody by the court, had pleaded not guilty to the allegation.

The court, presided over by Justice Yusuf Halilu, fixed October 6 for the continuation of hearing in the case.

In the charge marked CR/650/2024, the office of the AGF specifically accused the Abia lawmaker of offences bordering on alleged criminal defamation and false declaration.

In count one, he was alleged to have made a false declaration, sometime in May 2023, in an affidavit dated May 18, 2023, at the registry of the FCT High Court, Abuja, against Hon. Nkeiruka Chidubem Onyejeocha, then Minister of State for Labour and Employment.

The defendant allegedly claimed that, during a meeting with her supporters at her residence, she told them she had “bought over” the tribunal judges, particularly Hon. Justice Halima Saleeman.

The charge stated that the defendant knew the allegation was false, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 164 of the Penal Code, Cap. 89, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1963, punishable under Section 158(2) of the same Act.

He was also accused of making another false and defamatory declaration in the same affidavit, alleging that the former minister had influenced the removal of the former chairman of the panel, Hon. Justice Halilu, to pave the way for Hon. Justice Halima Saleeman, whom she allegedly knew personally and who would deliver judgment in her favour.

The prosecution alleged that the statement was false and constituted an offence contrary to Section 391 of the Penal Code, Cap. 89, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1963, punishable under Section 392 of the same Act.

One of the counts in the charge read: “That you, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, male, 44 years, a member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, sometime in May 2023, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court in the FCT, Abuja, committed an offence by making a false declaration against Hon. Nkeiruka Chidubem Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Federal Republic of Nigeria, with intent to destroy her reputation, as a result of which she suffered harm to her reputation, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code, Cap. 89, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1963, and punishable under the same section of the Act.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Rivers State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, over his reported claim that he could not afford medication for his late mother, saying the disclosure demonstrated his alleged unsuitability for the office of vice-president.

The APC, in a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, also mocked Amaechi over his reported comments that he had become financially constrained since leaving public office.

The party began its statement by expressing condolences over the death of Amaechi’s mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, and wishing the former governor good health.

It, however, quickly turned to a criticism of his political record and personal circumstances.

The APC said Amaechi, who served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor of the state and Minister of Transportation, had spent decades in public office but was now claiming to be unable to afford medication for his mother.

“Rotimi Amaechi’s uncanny confessions must not be missed,” the party said.

“First, he howled that he had become so broke and hungry that his wife was now feeding him. Now, he has stated that his inability to afford medications killed his mother at 89.”

The party questioned how Amaechi, after leaving public office, could reportedly find himself in such financial circumstances.

“For four decades, Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office. He was never hungry and could afford medications for himself and his family,” the APC alleged.

“Just three years out of office, he has become destitute, unable to fend for himself and his loved ones.”

The APC further attacked Amaechi’s suitability for political office, alleging that his reported financial difficulties showed an inability to sustain himself outside public office.

The party said: “If Amaechi is not struggling with some kind of Peter Pan syndrome, then he must be a loafer, aimless and irresponsible for his inability to be productive and earn a living outside the patronage of public office.”

Amaechi, according to the APC, was seeking the vice-presidency in 2027 despite his reported financial difficulties.

“The same Rotimi Amaechi now asks Nigerians to make him vice president come 2027 so he can continue leeching on public treasury and keep the predatory lifestyle he has grown accustomed to,” the party said.

It added: “The presidency is not a soup kitchen, and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi.”

The APC concluded by linking Amaechi’s reported comments directly to his suitability for the vice-presidential office.

“There can be no better speaker of Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of vice president than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” the party said.

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate in Bauchi State, Dr Yakubu Adamu, has launched a N200 million bursary scheme for indigenes of the state studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

The programme is aimed at easing the financial burden on students and encouraging them to remain committed to their education, according to the Director-General of the APM Governorship Campaign Council, Alhaji Hamza Koshe Akuyam.

Akuyam, in a statement, said the funds were sourced from donations received by Adamu from friends and well-wishers in support of his governorship campaign.

He said the candidate personally redirected part of the donations towards the bursary scheme as part of his commitment to education and the welfare of Bauchi students.

According to him, the initiative is one of several programmes proposed by Adamu to empower youths and promote human development in education, entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology, trade and artisanship.

The statement said interested Bauchi indigenes studying in tertiary institutions across the country could apply for the bursary through a designated online portal.

The campaign council also commended Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for his efforts in supporting education and students through the Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme (KEEP) and the payment of scholarships to students in tertiary institutions.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to supporting education and improving the welfare of Bauchi students across the country.

Command warns against concealed, fake diplomatic plates

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has ordered the arrest and immediate prosecution of motorists operating vehicles without valid licence plates or with concealed, defaced or deliberately faded plate numbers in the FCT.

The command also warned motorists against using tinted glasses without valid permits, as well as fake diplomatic number plates or diplomatic plates by unauthorised persons.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, issued the directive on Sunday following what the command described as a proliferation of vehicles being operated with concealed or otherwise irregular identification plates.

The command said such vehicles, particularly some SUVs, had been observed to be used by criminal elements to evade detection, identification and arrest during or after the commission of offences.

The FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the directive was aimed at strengthening security and ensuring effective identification and tracking of vehicles within the territory.

“The Federal Capital Territory is a peculiar environment where the use of such vehicles poses significant security concerns, as it may hinder effective identification and tracking by law enforcement agencies,” Adeh said in a statement.

She said the CP had directed that motorists found operating vehicles in violation of the law should be arrested and prosecuted immediately in accordance with extant laws.

Sanusi also directed police officers across the FCT to intensify enforcement and ensure strict compliance with laws governing vehicle identification and the use of tinted glasses.

However, officers were directed to conduct the enforcement professionally and not use the exercise as an avenue for extortion.

“The Commissioner of Police therefore warns that motorists found operating such vehicles in violation of the law will be arrested, and prosecuted immediately in accordance with the law,” Adeh said.

She urged residents to support police operations, stressing that security was a collective responsibility.

The command also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious vehicles or activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency numbers: 08032003913 and 08028940883.

Oyo adopts Oriire abduction template, engages Imo, security agencies

The 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted by gunmen in Imo State have allegedly been subjected to physical assault by their captors, including the female victims, as the kidnappers reduced their ransom demand to N5 million per victim.

The development came as the deadline reportedly given by the abductors for payment of the ransom approached, heightening anxiety among the victims’ families.

One of the affected relatives, Alhaja Alimot Akande, whose 25-year-old sister, Kehinde Akande, is among the abducted graduates, said the victims had allegedly been beaten since Saturday.

She described the situation as “horrible, scary and overwhelming,” while appealing to the government to intensify efforts to secure the victims’ release.

Akande said the kidnappers had reduced their initial demand from N50 million per victim to N5 million each.

“They are still demanding N5 million. They have come down to N5 million each,” she said.

Asked whether the N5 million was being demanded for each of the 20 victims, she replied: “Yes.”

She said she could not confirm how much had been raised towards the ransom, explaining that she was not privy to arrangements between the abductors and other families.

“I cannot say because I do not know how much they have told those people that they have,” she said.

According to Akande, her sister told her that the abductors had started beating the victims.

“Sir, we appeal to the government to please assist us in getting them rescued out of that place. When I spoke to my sister, they started beating them since yesterday,” she said.

Asked whether the female victims were also being assaulted, she said: “They are not sparing anybody. They are beating all of them.”

Akande also said one of the abducted corps members had been allowed to communicate with his father, alleging that the kidnappers monitored the calls as part of their efforts to assess the family’s ability to raise the ransom.

She said the abductors would alert the victim whenever his father called and allow him to speak to him.

She added that the families had been relying on assurances from the police while efforts continued to raise the ransom.

“The police are telling us to still be buying time. We are still looking for the money. Depending, they will see them rescued,” she said.

Akande confirmed that her family was directly affected by the incident, identifying her abducted sister as Kehinde, 25.

Oyo engages Imo, security agencies

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Government said it was maintaining contact with the Imo State Government and security agencies as efforts intensified to secure the release of the abducted graduates.

The state Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said the government was actively involved in efforts to rescue the victims despite the abduction occurring outside Oyo State.

Oyelade said the government was drawing on its experience from the recent abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area in its engagement with the Imo authorities.

“We are in close contacts at government-to-government level and actively with the security apparatus in Oyo and Imo states,” he said.

“We are volunteering our template and experiences garnered during the Oriire kidnapping, and the report of the Judicial Inquiry just submitted last week by the Hon. Justice (Professor) Mojeed Owoade Panel is coming in handy in our bilateral discussions on the matter.”

He explained that the government would not disclose all aspects of its strategy because of the sensitive nature of the operation.

“Governments all over the world are not in the habit of disclosing all they are planning in delicate situations like this,” Oyelade said.

The commissioner, however, said the Federal Government and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces should provide answers on the broader national security response to the incident.

“The pushback should be on the Federal Government and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, who are in charge of national security, on what they have done in 72 hours,” he said.

Oyelade also referred to Governor Seyi Makinde’s recent intervention over the abduction of students in Borno State, noting that the Borno incident occurred on the same day as the Oriire abduction.

He said Makinde had appealed to the Federal Government to expedite action on the rescue of the abducted Borno students.

Reaffirming the state’s commitment to the victims, Oyelade said the fact that the graduates were abducted in Imo did not absolve the Oyo Government of its responsibility to its citizens.

“Oyo State Government had not and will not abandon its citizens. We will continue to work endlessly and desperately to secure the release of our children,” he said.

How the graduates were abducted

The 20 prospective corps members were abducted on Thursday while travelling from Ibadan to their respective NYSC orientation camps in two buses.

The vehicles were reportedly attacked by gunmen along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Umunoha, Imo State, while the graduates were travelling to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.

The incident triggered concern among the affected families, particularly after the parents said the kidnappers initially demanded N50 million for each victim — N1 billion in total — and gave them a 24-hour ultimatum to raise the money.

The parents subsequently sought the intervention of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, during a visit to his private residence in Bodija, Ibadan.

They were accompanied by the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, and the Aseyin of Iseyinland, Oba Sefiu Adeyeri.

The parents appealed to the monarch to intervene, saying they could not raise the N1 billion ransom demanded.

“They have been calling us since yesterday (Friday) with a demand for N50 million ransom each. They are threatening that anything untoward will happen to our children if we fail to heed to their request,” the parents had said.

“There is no way we can raise such an amount at this period. Baba, kindly assist us. Don’t let them kill our children.”

Responding, Ladoja assured the families that efforts were being made to secure the victims’ release.

“I want to assure that your children would be rescued unharmed. We will relate whatever information we gather to you,” he said.

“The police are working round the clock to secure their rescue. Don’t worry yourself, police are up to the task, and nothing would happen to your children.”

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abimbola, also said he had remained in contact with his Imo counterpart since the incident.

“I had already contacted Imo State CP. We have been talking since the day of incident, and he assured me that the victims would be rescued unhurt,” Abimbola said.

Adebayo made the pledge in a message marking the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.

The statement, issued on Sunday by Comrade Mark Adebayo, Head of Media and Communications, Adewole Adebayo-Bugaje Presidential Campaign, said the SDP candidate commended Nigerian teachers for their resilience and commitment despite difficult working conditions.

Recalling the formation of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in July 1931 by Alvan Ikoku and other pioneers, Adebayo said teachers had remained at the forefront of national development.

“Ninety-five years ago, in July 1931, visionary teachers came together to form the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT). Iconic youth leader and educationist, Alvan Ikoku, and other pioneer nationalists unified various regional teachers’ associations into a singular, formidable voice,” he said.

According to him, the NUT was established not merely as a trade union but as an organisation committed to national development, the standardisation of education and the protection of the dignity of Nigerian teachers.

“Today, we look back at that history and realise that the spirit of 1931 is still very much alive in our classrooms.

“Despite working under extremely difficult conditions, facing decades of systemic neglect, dilapidated classrooms, lack of modern teaching aids and delayed entitlements, Nigerian teachers have consistently given an excellent account of themselves,” he said.

Adebayo said virtually every national achievement could be traced to teachers who had nurtured talents across various fields, including science, business, the military and politics.

He, however, said the teaching profession had increasingly become one characterised by sacrifice without commensurate reward, promising what he described as a radical overhaul of the education sector if elected.

“We cannot expect a 21st-century educational miracle from 19th-century infrastructure and demoralised personnel,” he said.

“The Adewole Adebayo-Bugaje administration pledges to make teaching one of the most attractive professions in Nigeria. We will execute bold, revolutionary policies to overhaul the Nigerian educational system completely.”

He said his proposed reforms would focus on three areas: improved remuneration for teachers, modern educational infrastructure and greater institutional respect for the teaching profession.

Adebayo also acknowledged the contributions of teachers at all levels of the education system.

“To our primary school teachers laying the foundation, our secondary school teachers guiding our youth, and our university lecturers steering research — we see you, we value you, and help is on the way. Happy World Teachers’ Day,” he said.

The campaign flag-off for the PDP senatorial candidate, Prince Samben Nwosu, began with a roadshow through some communities in the district on Saturday, drawing party leaders, local government chairmen, ward executives and supporters.

The event, held at Jideofor Hotel, Nnewi, was attended by the PDP Deputy National Legal Adviser, Mr Chinemelum Ubah; State Chairman, Prince Casmir Ajulu; State Secretary, Sir Sunny Umenne; Anambra South Senatorial District Chairman, Prince Victor Uba; and other party leaders.

Addressing party supporters, Ajulu expressed confidence that the PDP would win its candidates’ elections in 2027, saying the party was not intimidated by APGA or any other political party.

He said APGA did not win any National Assembly seat in Anambra State in the 2023 general elections and expressed confidence that the PDP would defeat the ruling party in the 2027 elections.

Ajulu also recalled that APGA won the Anambra South senatorial bye-election held after the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, but said the PDP was determined to reclaim the seat in 2027.

He said the party was confident of winning the National Assembly seats in Anambra South at the next general election.

The PDP Deputy National Legal Adviser, Ubah, urged the party’s seven local government chairmen and ward executives in the district to return to their respective wards and mobilise support for Nwosu.

The party’s State Secretary, Umenne, said the PDP was optimistic of victory in 2027, citing the turnout and support displayed during the roadshow.

“Seeing the organic love displayed during the roadshow, Prince Samben Nwosu, the PDP senatorial candidate for Anambra South Senatorial District, is the man to clinch the Senate seat,” he said.

He said the turnout demonstrated that the PDP remained active in the state and needed leadership capable of repositioning the party.

Nwosu, who expressed appreciation for the support he received during the roadshow, said his campaign was based on competence rather than financial inducement.

“I am contesting with myself, not with a bag of rice or envelope,” he said.

He said voters should prioritise competence and quality when choosing their representatives, adding that financial inducement could result in the election of candidates who fail to meet the expectations of their constituents.

Nwosu pledged to introduce what he described as a new style of representation that would carry the people along if elected.

“I have gone to the field. I have interacted with our people, business men, traders and people of diverse professions. This is how it is going to be if elected. I will consult my people, tell them what is on board, seek their opinion and synergise with what they want,” he said.

Nwosu, who expressed appreciation for the support he received during the roadshow, said his campaign was based on competence and a commitment to effective representation.

“I am contesting with myself, not with a bag of rice or envelope,” he said.

Nwosu said the turnout demonstrated that the PDP remained active in the state and needed leadership capable of repositioning the party.

“Trust is more than money. When people vote for competence and quality, the issue of a candidate not delivering will be a thing of the past. People are now wise,” he said.

He criticised what he described as past instances of voters supporting candidates because of financial inducements, saying such candidates could subsequently fail to meet the expectations of their constituents.

Nwosu promised that, if elected, he would introduce what he described as a new style of representation that would carry the people along.

He said he had already interacted with traders, business owners and people from different professions across the district, adding that he would continue to consult his constituents, seek their views and align his legislative agenda with their priorities.

The campaign flag-off ended with the formal presentation of the PDP flag to Nwosu, amid cheers from party supporters.

OWERRI — The welfare of Nigerians would have been considerably better than it is today if not for the socio-economic challenges and systemic corruption that have bedevilled the country over the years, the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, has said.

Ugorji spoke in his homily during a Eucharistic celebration at Maria Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri, to mark Nigeria’s Independence anniversary.

He urged political office holders to adopt people-oriented leadership anchored on enduring moral principles, saying this was necessary for the country to overcome its challenges and make meaningful progress.

The Archbishop said Nigeria had continued to face deep-rooted socio-economic and governance challenges, with successive administrations struggling with accountability, transparency and long-term institutional planning.

He said short-term political considerations had often taken precedence over national development.

According to him, despite the country’s abundant natural resources, Nigeria remained vulnerable to external shocks because of its reliance on crude oil, sluggish industrialisation, high unemployment and widespread poverty.

“Persistent insecurity, including insurgency, banditry and terrorism, continue to disrupt local economies, displace communities and strain national cohesion,” he said.

Ugorji also condemned the pervasive nature of corruption, saying it had become deeply entrenched in different sectors of Nigerian society.

“We must acknowledge that for 66 years, the cancer of systemic corruption has eaten deep into the fabric of our society,” he said.

He described corruption as “ethical decay or moral rottenness,” stressing that it went beyond the theft of public funds by political leaders.

According to him, corruption also manifests in everyday activities, including demanding bribes before processing official documents, soliciting money or sexual favours from students, examination malpractice, cheating customers with false measurements, extorting motorists and subverting justice.

He also cited the alteration of election results by electoral officials as another manifestation of corruption.

“If we want a new Nigeria, we must become new Nigerians. We must have new hearts. We must have attitudinal change. We must be transformed from head to toe,” Ugorji said.

He stressed that national transformation could not come solely from political leaders, urging citizens to examine their own conduct and embrace accountability.

“Transformation does not flow from top down alone. We cannot demand accountability from our leaders when we are unaccountable in our small homes, in our businesses, and in our churches,” he said.

The Archbishop called on Nigerians to cultivate a culture of honesty, hard work and merit, urging citizens to do what is right regardless of whether they were being watched.

“We must learn to do the right thing simply because it is right, even when no one is watching,” he added.
