The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has expressed appreciation to the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for donating 50 buses and 30 tricycles to the institution.

This is contained in a statement issued on Monday in Ile-Ife by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju.

The statement described the First Lady’s donation to her alma mater as a classic demonstration of her unwavering commitment to the welfare, mobility, and overall well-being of students.

It noted that the provision of buses and tricycles is expected to significantly ease transportation challenges within the campus.

The university also thanked the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, for his pivotal role in facilitating the delivery of the vehicles.

It said that his continued royal support for educational development and student welfare is deeply appreciated.

The statement, however, appealed to students and the university community for understanding regarding temporary operational challenges associated with the new transport system.

“As with any new system, this initiative is still a work in progress.

“Necessary adjustments, route optimisation, scheduling improvements and operational enhancements are actively being undertaken to ensure efficiency, safety and maximum benefit for all users.

“We assure our students that all concerns raised will be carefully reviewed and addressed in due course,” it said

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that its derecognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is part of a broader effort to prevent the party from participating in the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the commission’s recent actions — including its refusal to accept correspondence from the party — could hinder its ability to meet key electoral requirements.

“We are compelled to raise serious concerns about a developing situation that appears designed to prevent the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from fielding candidates in the upcoming elections,” Abdullahi said.

The party has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since July 2025, when an opposition coalition assumed control of its structure. The dispute centres on claims by a former deputy national chairman, Nafiu Bala, who challenged the emergence of former Senate President David Mark as national chairman.

The situation escalated last Wednesday after INEC announced it would no longer recognise either the Mark-led leadership or the Bala faction, citing a March 12 Court of Appeal judgment. The commission also said it would refrain from engaging with both groups pending the outcome of a case before the Federal High Court.

However, Abdullahi argued that INEC’s current position contradicts its earlier actions and official records.

“INEC received formal notice of the July 29, 2025, National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the ADC. It deployed officials to monitor that meeting… and subsequently uploaded the names of the new leadership,” he said.

He added that the commission’s refusal to accept party correspondence now conflicts with provisions of the Electoral Act, which set timelines for party primaries and submission of candidates.

“The Electoral Act imposes strict timelines… However, by refusing to receive communication from the ADC within this same period, the Commission is effectively preventing the party from complying with the law,” Abdullahi stated.

He warned that the development places the party in an “impossible position,” adding: “In simple terms, INEC is effectively threatening that unless the courts deliver judgment on the ADC leadership issue by May 10, it will prevent the ADC from producing candidates.”

The ADC spokesperson described the situation as a “dangerous contradiction” and urged the commission to reverse its stance.

Abdullahi called on INEC to “immediately” resume accepting correspondence from the party and ensure a level playing field for all political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

Armed bandits carrying dangerous weapons attacked and set communities ablaze in the Gebbe District of Shanga Local Government Area of Niger State on Sunday night.

Reports indicate that the attackers emerged from their hideout in the Wawa Forest in Borgu Local Government Area, which borders the affected communities in Shanga.

The communities affected include Kalkami, Tungar Bori, and Kawara, among others.

Available information confirmed that, in addition to Kalkami, the bandits also burnt down Kawara village on Monday morning.

Across all the affected communities, an undisclosed number of deaths and casualties were recorded.

A resident of the area, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said that four people have so far lost their lives as a result of the attack.

The Vice Chairman of Shanga Local Government Area, Adamu Gebbe, confirmed the incident, noting that this was not the first time bandits had attacked the area.

Also condemning the incident in a phone conversation with our reporter, the District Head of Gebbe, Alhaji Haruna Usman, said residents of the affected communities had fled.

According to him, some people are currently taking refuge on Gungu Island, while others remain in the forests in search of safety.

Shanga Local Government Area has continued to face persistent attacks by bandits, cattle rustlers, and kidnappers seeking ransom payments.

Kebbi Police Command image maker, SP Bashir Usman, said security personnel are on the ground to restore peace and normalcy in the affected villages.

JOS – In a heartwarming story of integrity, a small-scale trader in Jos, Mrs. Sarah Luka, has returned the sum of ₦1,000,000 (One Million Naira) that was mistakenly put in the goods she purchased by a wholesaler.

Mrs. Luka, who runs a small business at Lamingo area in Jos, had gone to Terminus Market on Saturday to buy leather bags from a wholesaler Mr. Abubakar Dola.

According to Mr. Dola, he had kept ₦1 million inside a polythene bag, intending to send it to a POS operator for transfer.

In the process of packing the leather bags worth ₦6,000 for Mrs. Luka, he mistakenly included the bag containing the money.

Three days later, on Monday, Mrs. Luka returned to Mr. Dola’s shop and handed over the entire ₦1 million.

In an interview with our correspondent Mrs. Luka, a Christian, explained that she promptly returned the money because it was a clear mistake.

“I am a poor businesswoman,I know what it means to suffer loss she added.

If I put that kind of money that is not mine into my business, I believe God would punish me,” she said.

When asked further what motivated her action, she simply replied: “Because the money is a mistake and not mine.

”Mr. Abubakar Dola, who operates from Terminus Market, expressed deep gratitude and relief.

“I had completely given up because I didn’t know how the money got lost. “

I didn’t even think I put the money in someone’s goods,” he said.

He added: “I pray Allah rewards her with more than what she did for me.

I pray Allah gives us more people of her kind who fear God. It’s not easy to have people of her character.”

By Peter Duru

The death toll in Saturday morning’s armed herdsmen attack on Agena community, Mbalom, Gwer East Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue State has risen to 11 following the recovery of two more bodies from the community.

Nine corpses were initially recovered Sunday afternoon after that attack, which left one person injured while houses, food barns and market were razed, causing widespread destruction in the community.

A resident disclosed that the attackers, numbering over 50, invaded the community in what appeared to be a coordinated operation.

He stated that the people were fast asleep when the attackers sneaked into the community around 5am and began setting houses and the market ablaze and also opened fire on those they caught up with.

Speaking Monday on the situation in the area, a community mobiliser and leader, Christopher Gbasha, who was on the ground with the search team in the village, disclosed that “two more corpses have been discovered in the village to add to the number deposited in the mortuary, so we have 11 deaths now.

“There are no more casualties but the people are scared and have deserted the community. We have youths who are guarding the place. Women and children are out of the village for now for their safety.

“The State Government also sent the Benue State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, to the place to take record of the situation.

“They went there and did the documentation and took inventory of the destruction and I was there with them. The place is calm right now,” he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sacked his chief of staff following the publication of leaked comments in which he made racist remarks.

“Ziv Agmon will leave his post in the coming days once his successor, Ido Norden, takes office,” Netanyahu said in a post on X late Sunday.

Agmon, who has been serving as Netanyahu’s acting chief of staff and spokesperson, provoked outrage last week after reportedly referring to Jews of Moroccan descent as “baboons” and disparaging members of Netanyahu’s Likud party, as well as the prime minister’s wife and son.

Norden’s appointment represented a sudden reversal.

Less than two hours earlier, the Likud party’s official Telegram channel had quoted Netanyahu saying he wanted Agmon to remain in the post for the sake of “stability and continuity”.

Norden, however, has drawn scrutiny of his own.

Israeli journalists reported Monday that he had created fake X accounts to promote his book on the “deep state,” in which he attributes Israel’s failure to prevent the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, to shadowy institutional forces.

Norden’s appointment is still subject to vetting by the Shin Bet domestic security service.

A lawyer and economist, Norden chairs the “Forum of Senior Officials”, a right‑wing think-tank that advocates for greater ideological diversity within Israel’s public sector and opposes what it describes as its “uniformity of thought”.

Netanyahu has faced repeated turmoil within his staff over the years.

This latest shake‑up follows a series of controversies surrounding the prime minister’s inner circle.

Recently, his close ally Tzachi Braverman — designated as Israel’s future ambassador to London — was questioned by police over alleged interference in a leak investigation linked to the Gaza war.

Netanyahu’s inner circle has also faced ongoing scrutiny in the so-called “Qatargate” scandal, where former aides are accused of taking Qatari money to improve Qatar’s image in Israel during the conflict.

Liverpool legend John Barnes believes it is the right time for Mohamed Salah to depart Anfield at the end of the current season.

The former Reds winger stated that Salah’s exit would have been even better at the end of last season, describing the current campaign as difficult for the Egyptian star.

Speaking to OLBG, Barnes said: “I think it probably is the right time, mainly because of the way the season’s gone and what he’s been able to give. I thought it would have been at the end of last year, which for me would have been a better time for both parties.”

Salah, who turns 34 in June, confirmed last month that he will leave Liverpool after nine successful years at the club. His final season has been overshadowed by a penalty miss in the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Manchester City and earlier public comments about the club and manager Arne Slot.

Barnes noted that Liverpool needed to plan for the future by signing younger attackers such as Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz last summer.

“The problem for Salah is the problem for everybody. You get to 34 years old and this happens,” he added.

Despite Salah’s reduced output this season — with just 10 goals in 35 games — Barnes insisted the forward remains one of Liverpool’s all-time greats.

“He’s up there with the best of them,” Barnes said. “You can talk about Steven Gerrard, Kevin Keegan, Ian Callaghan… I think Mo will be right up there with them. In terms of the top players at Liverpool, 100 per cent he’s up there.”

Salah is expected to feature when Liverpool face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

By Luminous Jannamike, ABUJA

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could stop it from fielding candidates in the 2027 elections, warning that the Commission’s refusal to accept its correspondence may effectively shut it out of the ballot.

The ADC says that by declining to receive its communications, the Commission is making it impossible for the party to meet key legal requirements, including notice periods and submission deadlines, ahead of the May 10 cut-off.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said available records show that INEC had previously monitored, documented and recognised its leadership, making its current stance difficult to reconcile.

“We are compelled to raise serious concerns about a developing situation that appears designed to prevent the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from fielding candidates in the upcoming elections.

“It is based on documentary evidence which we are now placing before the Nigerian public, including certified INEC records, attendance logs, monitoring reports, and excerpts from the Commission’s own sworn affidavit. Taken together, these documents establish a clear and consistent record of events,” the party stated.

The ADC also said INEC was formally notified of its July 29, 2025, National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, attended in an official capacity, and later updated its records to reflect a new leadership led by Senator David Mark as National Chairman and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.

“These are not claims. They are facts contained in INEC’s own records.

“Yet, despite this clear documentary trail, INEC has now taken the position that it will no longer receive any correspondence from the ADC pending the determination of a matter before the Federal High Court. This is where the contradiction becomes dangerous.

“The Electoral Act imposes strict timelines on political parties, including the 21-day notice requirement and submission deadlines. INEC itself has fixed May 10 as the deadline for the submission of relevant documents. However, by refusing to receive communication from the ADC within this same period, the Commission is effectively preventing the party from complying with the law.

“In simple terms, INEC is effectively threatening that unless the courts deliver judgement on the ADC leadership issue by May 10, it will prevent the ADC from producing candidates,” it said.

The party warned that this leaves it with no real options, creating what it described as a path to “artificial non-compliance” that could later be used to justify excluding it from the elections.

“This places the ADC in an impossible position and creates a clear pathway to artificial non-compliance, which can then be used to justify excluding the party from fielding candidates. That is the landmine.

“We therefore call on the Commission to immediately reverse this position, resume the acceptance of all lawful correspondence from the ADC, and uphold its constitutional responsibility to ensure a level playing field for all political parties.

“We also call on Nigerians to remain vigilant and wary of what we consider dangerous machinations to subvert Nigeria’s democracy and impose a civilian dictatorship on the country,” the ADC said.

A Nigerian soldier, Lance Corporal Rotimi Olamilekan, popularly called Soja Boi, has gone public with details of what he describes as a harsh and traumatic ordeal after his dismissal from the army.

Olamilekan made a viral video in 2025 urging politicians to send their own children to the battlefield to experience the dangers soldiers face.

“If I am to advise the government, I would only advise them to improve soldiers’ welfare. A soldier should be able to see a hungry civilian and give him or her some money, but it is not possible,” he said.

“My last salary as a lance corporal was #109,000. Apart from the salary, there is a money N20,000 for another purpose. Basically, a soldier’s salary does not amount to a hundred dollars.

“Yes, they provide accommodation, but you would notice that some soldiers have to sleep in the barracks because they do not own a house. Why I had to leave the work was because of the financial aspect. I have two kids who attend private schools, a younger sister who is also schooling and a mother. There is a lot to do, and imagine if there is no more to cope with and provide basic needs, especially if I have to wait for the salary to come. I have to have more earnings.

“There is no freedom; you still have to keep working, but the pay is low.”

The Katsina Police Command says suspected armed bandits have killed two civilians and a police officer during attacks along the Karadua–Musawa Road in Matazu Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on Sunday when bandits reportedly blocked the road and opened fire on a moving Volkswagen Golf vehicle, killing two occupants on the spot.

According to a statement in Katsina on Monday by the command spokesman, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, security operatives quickly responded to the attack.

He said a joint team comprising police personnel, military operatives, members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps and local vigilantes was mobilised to the scene following a distress report.

“The team swiftly dislodged the assailants and evacuated the victims to a nearby hospital.”

According to Sadiq-Aliyu, the bandits later regrouped and attempted to launch another attack on the Musawa Police Division.

He said that officers on duty successfully repelled the assault after a fierce gun battle, preventing the attackers from overrunning the facility.

He explained that during the encounter, one police officer was killed while defending the station.

The Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar-Fage, said that additional operational assets had been deployed to the affected area to strengthen security and forestall further attacks.

The commissioner also ordered a full-scale investigation aimed at tracking down and arresting the perpetrators.

Umar-Fage expressed condolences to the families of the slain civilians and the fallen officer, describing the latter as a hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

He urged residents to remain calm and continue to support security agencies with credible information as efforts intensify to bring those responsible to justice. (NAN)

For families seeking the best possible future for their children, citizenship at birth in many countries is more than a legal technicality: it is a strategic advantage that can shape access to education, healthcare, and global opportunities.

Children born with citizenship immediately gain rights within their country of nationality, including access to public services and labor markets. In an increasingly globalized world, this status also unlocks international mobility, often allowing visa-free travel and broader opportunities for study and employment later in life.

At the heart of this advantage is jus soli, or “right of the soil,” a principle that grants automatic citizenship to anyone born within a country’s territory, regardless of parental nationality. This contrasts with jus sanguinis, where citizenship is inherited through parents and may require additional legal processes.

Here is a closer look at 10 countries where birthright citizenship plays a key role, and what each offers:

10. Dominica

The Caribbean nation provides citizenship through birth as well as other pathways like residency and marriage. Its process is formal and document-heavy, involving background checks and ministerial approval. While structured, it remains an accessible option for families seeking a second nationality with global mobility benefits.

9. Costa Rica

Costa Rica grants automatic citizenship to children born on its soil. Known for political stability and a strong education system, it offers a safe and attractive environment for raising children with long-term opportunities.

8. Latvia

Latvia’s citizenship laws are more nuanced. While not a pure jus soli country, children born in Latvia may qualify for citizenship under specific conditions. Its European Union membership provides significant travel and work advantages across Europe.

7. France

France applies a conditional form of jus soli. Children born in the country can acquire citizenship, often after meeting residency requirements. French citizenship grants access to one of the world’s largest economies and the broader EU.

6. Mexico

Mexico offers unrestricted birthright citizenship. Beyond immediate rights, Mexican nationality provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to many countries, making it a practical option for global mobility.

5. New Zealand

New Zealand previously offered unconditional jus soli but now requires at least one parent to be a citizen or resident. Despite this, it remains highly attractive due to its quality of life, education system, and safety.

4. Canada

Canada is one of the most well-known jus soli countries. Any child born on Canadian soil automatically becomes a citizen, gaining access to high-quality healthcare, education, and a strong passport for global travel.

3. United States

The United States operates one of the most established birthright citizenship systems under the 14th Amendment. Citizenship here provides access to vast educational and economic opportunities, along with one of the world’s most powerful passports.

2. Brazil

Brazil offers unconditional jus soli, granting automatic citizenship to anyone born within its borders. The country combines this with relatively straightforward registration processes and broad travel access across Latin America.

1. Australia

Australia provides citizenship by birth under certain conditions, typically requiring at least one parent to be a citizen or permanent resident. It remains a top destination due to its strong economy, education system, and high standard of living.

By Dapo Akinrefon

A Coalition of Concerned Youth Bodies in Rivers State has urged President Bola Tinubu to decentralise pipeline security contracts in the Niger Delta region.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Mr Charles Malford urged the President to take further decisive steps towards achieving lasting peace and stability in the region by decentralising the surveillance contracts.

The coalition, in a statement, commended Tinubu for his ongoing developmental efforts in the region, noting the President’s commitment to improving the welfare of the oil-producing communities.

The youth bodies emphasised that decentralising pipeline security contracts is essential for creating job opportunities for youths, who make up the majority of the region’s population.

The reads: “Concentration of contracts in the hands of a single company is neither equitable nor sustainable. Local communities should be involved directly in securing infrastructure to promote ownership and accountability.

“Engaging local youths meaningfully in pipeline security will reduce tendencies towards crime, drug abuse, and other social challenges.

“Decentralisation promotes better grassroots participation and enhances the protection of critical infrastructure by involving community members intimately familiar with their local environments.”

The coalition further urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to clarify and unbundle the existing contracts related to pipeline and wellhead surveillance to ensure clear roles and responsibilities.

The coalition said: “This call for decentralisation is timely, fair, and necessary for fostering inclusiveness, better security, and strengthened regional cooperation.”

The youth bodies, however, reiterated its commitment to peace, development, and progress in the Niger Delta and across Nigeria, saying “The coalition stands united in advocating for policies that empower youths and safeguard the nation’s critical infrastructure.”

Also speaking, National President, Rivers Youths Federation, Patrick Saviour, said it will be unfair to bring someone from elsewhere to monitor or do a project which people in the locality have the capacity to handle.

Saviour said: “So I want to plead with Mr President to please look into it. It should not be a situation whereby one person will have a contract and make such contract to look like a family business. When such contract is given to a one person, sabotage can easily come it. Let us continue to maintain our peace and we know that Mr. President will hear our cry because he has a listening ear and as a father, he knows what is best and we want peace in this region,” he stressed.

On his part, a Rivers Youth Leader, Benson Ati, said, it is better to localise the contract for effectiveness and better results.

“For instance, we are Rivers people and we should be able to secure the Federal Government assets in our communities better. Therefore, looking into decentralizing the pipeline surveillance contract, improving employment and security for this same pipeline that serve the entire nation and bring the food that we all eat in this entire nation, is something that should be done now.”

The White House on Monday confirmed there was a deal under consideration for a 45-day ceasefire with Iran, but that President Donald Trump had “not signed off” on the proposal and is continuing the war.

US media have reported that a proposal by mediators for a 45-day ceasefire in the Middle East war has been received by Washington.

“This is one of many ideas, and POTUS (Trump) has not signed off on it. Operation Epic Fury continues,” a White House official told AFP, adding that the president will speak more on the conflict at a press conference scheduled for 1:00 pm (1700 GMT).

US sprint star Sha’Carri Richardson surged through the field Monday to win Australia’s prestigious Stawell Gift race, clocking the fastest time in its history.

Held on grass over 120m at a slight gradient in a small rural town outside Melbourne, athletes are handicapped according to form and start off varying marks.

Richardson, who won the 2023 100m world title and was second in the blue-riband sprint at the 2024 Paris Olympics, reined in runners who had up to a nine-metre head start.

She crossed the line in 13.15 seconds to become only the third woman to win the race from scratch — starting at the back of the field.

“The race was phenomenal,” Richardson told reporters.

“(I’ve been) focusing in on the race execution me and my coach Dennis (Mitchell) have been working on and using this as a race to utilise those new gears and show them off.”

Richardson said she did not know what to expect running on grass, but the experience boded well for a big season ahead.

“I don’t see it as any less than a regular race, the worlds, Olympics … every single time you have the chance to touch the track, you use that chance,” she said.

Her boyfriend Christian Coleman, who holds the 60m indoor world record and also started from scratch, 5.25m behind his closest rival, failed to make it past the semi-finals.

“Giving up that much of a margin over 120, it is what it is, but I had fun,” he said.

Australian Olufemi Komolafe won the men’s final in 12.03 seconds.

The Stawell Gift is Australia’s oldest sprint race, dating back to the gold rush days in the area.

It has been held annually since 1878 except for four years during World War II and once during the Covid pandemic.

Bernardo Silva will leave Manchester City at the end of the season, bringing an end to a glittering nine-year spell with the Premier League champions.

The 31-year-old Portugal international, who has won six league titles and a UEFA Champions League during his time at the Etihad, is set to depart when his current contract expires at the end of the campaign, SkySports reports.

His impending exit was confirmed by assistant manager Pep Lijnders following City’s 4-0 FA Cup victory over Liverpool on Saturday, where he acknowledged both the player’s impact and the challenge of replacing him.

“You never replace a player with the same kind of player, because they don’t exist. Bernardo Silva is unique,” Lijnders said.

“The way he controls games, the way he moves, the way he receives, the way he leads, the way he sees the solutions, all these things.

“You never search for a replacement of one type of player, you search for what is needed to grow with the team and somebody who can fit in the first XI.

“And then you hope with our academy, with the young players we already bought, that they can make that step as well in the midfield positions. But if you see our young boys in the academy, they have to make that step and to grow.

“But the most important is that the seniors will stay for a long time, that they stay, that the core is there and around that you can move.

“But it will be hard, because as I said, in the game, when he’s not playing, you will see how he’s missed. And that’s one game. Imagine a season?

“But every good story comes to an end.

“I hope he enjoys the last months, it is only six weeks, and he has a good farewell and he deserves all that attention as well.”

Silva’s departure will mark the end of an era for City, with the midfielder widely regarded as one of the most intelligent and technically gifted players of the club’s modern dominance.

Israel’s military said Monday it had killed the commander of the special operations unit of Iran’s Quds Force in a strike on Tehran a day earlier.

The Quds Force is the foreign operations arm of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards.

“Yesterday, the Israeli Air Force… conducted a strike in Tehran and eliminated Asghar Bagheri, Commander of the Quds Force’s Special Operations Unit (840) since 2019,” a military statement said.

It added that Bagheri had in recent years held a series of senior positions within the Quds Force and “was involved in attacks targeting Israeli and American individuals worldwide”.
