Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has backed Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen to bring greater physical presence to the club’s attack if a move to the Premier League side materialises.

Petit was discussing Arsenal’s attacking options when he identified Osimhen as a potential alternative to Julián Alvarez, who has also been linked with the club.

Osimhen is reportedly valued at around £100 million, while Petit believes the Nigerian and Alvarez would offer different qualities to Mikel Arteta’s team.

“Next one for Arsenal then is Victor Osimhen at £100 million,” Petit said in an interview monitored by PUNCH Online on Friday.

“They are different players. Not the same quality as Alvarez, but he will bring a powerful presence up front.”

The former France international also pointed to Osimhen’s pace, determination and personality as attributes that could make him an effective option for Arsenal.

“He’s fast, he’s a fighter, he’s got a bad temper as well, a strong personality,” Petit said.

Petit stressed that Osimhen would provide a different profile from Alvarez, while maintaining that both players could be suitable options for Arsenal.

“So, he will bring something different from Alvarez, but it’s two different options. Both of them are good,” he added.

Osimhen has established himself as one of Europe’s prominent forwards, with his pace, physical strength and ability to attack space among the qualities associated with his game.

The Nigerian striker’s potential move to Arsenal would represent a return to the Premier League, where he could offer Arteta another attacking option and a different dimension in the final third.

Petit’s comments come amid continued speculation over Arsenal’s plans to strengthen their attacking options as the club seeks to compete on multiple fronts.

Former England and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has signed a deal to broadcast German Bundesliga games on his YouTube channel, the league announced on Friday.

Vardy’s channel will become an official broadcaster in the UK for seven Friday Bundesliga games this season. The arrangement is similar to that of British podcaster Mark Goldbridge, who became an official broadcaster in 2025 and will show 15 matches in the 2026-27 season.

The channel will broadcast Friday’s Bundesliga opener between defending champions Bayern Munich and Stuttgart.

While traditional outlets such as Sky Sport and the BBC also have broadcast rights, the Vardy and Goldbridge deals are part of the Bundesliga’s strategy of reaching new audiences amid the international appeal of the English Premier League.

Viewers of Vardy and Goldbridge’s channels follow along with the match while also watching the hosts’ reactions.

“The addition of Vardy brings a different, player-led format to the Bundesliga’s creator distribution, combining live football with the perspective and personality of one of the Premier League’s most recognisable players in recent years,” the league said in a statement.

Vardy, 39, is a free agent after a one-year stint at Italian side Cremonese ended in the summer following the club’s relegation from Serie A. He launched his podcast in June.

Signed by Leicester from fifth-tier Fleetwood Town in 2012, Vardy was the centrepiece in the team’s remarkable Premier League triumph in 2015-16, scoring in a record 11 consecutive top-flight matches.

Vardy made his England debut aged 28 and scored seven goals in 26 appearances at international level.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been handed a three-team group for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON qualifiers, with Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau standing between them and a place at the continental tournament.

The draw, conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo on May 19, 2026, placed Nigeria in Group L alongside the three countries.

The 2027 AFCON will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

Tanzania’s presence in Nigeria’s group means the Super Eagles face a slightly different qualification equation because the co-hosts already have an automatic place at the finals. Only one team other than Tanzania will qualify from Group L.

Here are the three countries Nigeria will face:

Madagascar

Madagascar will be one of Nigeria’s opponents in Group L.

The two countries have met in previous AFCON qualifying campaigns. Nigeria defeated Madagascar home and away during the qualifiers for the 2012 AFCON.

Madagascar have also established themselves as a more competitive side in African football in recent years. Their most notable AFCON run came in 2019, when they surprisingly reached the quarter-finals in Egypt.

For Nigeria, the matches against Madagascar could prove important in determining who finishes at the top of the group.

Tanzania

Tanzania are the co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON and are therefore guaranteed a place at the tournament.

Despite their automatic qualification, the Taifa Stars will participate fully in the qualifying campaign. However, because Tanzania already have a guaranteed place, only the highest-ranked team apart from Tanzania will qualify from Group L.

Nigeria have faced Tanzania before in AFCON qualifying. The two sides were in the same group for the 2017 tournament. They played a goalless draw in Dar es Salaam before Nigeria secured a 1-0 victory in Uyo, with Kelechi Iheanacho scoring the decisive goal.

The upcoming meetings will therefore renew a familiar rivalry between the two sides.

Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau complete Nigeria’s Group L opponents.

The two West African nations have also crossed paths in recent AFCON qualifying campaigns. They were drawn together in the race for the 2023 tournament, with Guinea-Bissau winning in Abuja before Nigeria claimed a victory in Bissau.

Guinea-Bissau have become regular participants at the AFCON in recent editions and will look to cause another upset against the Super Eagles.

Their previous victory over Nigeria in Abuja is a reminder that the Super Eagles cannot afford to underestimate any opponent in the group.

When will Nigeria begin their qualifying campaign?

The first two matchdays of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers are scheduled for the FIFA international window between September 21 and October 6, 2026.

Matchdays three and four will take place between November 9 and 17, 2026, while the final two rounds are scheduled for March 22-30, 2027.

With Tanzania already assured of a place at the finals, Nigeria’s main objective will be to finish above Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau and claim the group’s sole qualifying ticket.

The Super Eagles were placed in Pot 1 for the draw alongside some of Africa’s leading football nations, reflecting their status among the continent’s top-ranked teams.

The qualification campaign will provide Nigeria with an opportunity to secure a return to the AFCON finals after their strong run at the 2025 edition, where they finished third.

By Enitan Abdultawab

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set to begin a new kit era in 2027 after the Nigeria Football Federation agreed to a record-breaking partnership with German sportswear company Adidas.

Under the reported deal, Adidas will pay the NFF $4.5 million annually in cash, while also supplying equipment worth another $4 million each year for Nigeria’s national teams.

The cash component is estimated at about ₦6.1 billion, while the equipment package is valued at approximately ₦5.4 billion annually.

The agreement will also give the NFF 20 per cent of sales generated through Adidas stores, potentially providing the federation with an additional source of revenue.

The reported figures make the partnership the biggest kit-supply agreement involving an African football federation in terms of revenue. Nigeria’s annual cash payment is also said to be more than double Morocco’s reported figure.

The deal could provide some financial relief for the NFF, which has faced challenges surrounding the funding and administration of Nigeria’s national teams.

Beyond the Super Eagles, the equipment package is expected to benefit other national teams, including the Super Falcons and the country’s youth sides. The arrangement could reduce the federation’s cost of providing kits and other equipment for training camps, qualifiers and international tournaments.

The NFF could also benefit significantly from the 20 per cent merchandise-sales clause if Adidas succeeds in generating strong demand for Nigeria’s football shirts.

Nigeria has previously demonstrated the commercial appeal of its national-team kits, particularly during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, when the Super Eagles’ Nike shirt attracted widespread global attention.

A similar level of demand for Adidas merchandise could translate into substantial additional revenue for the federation throughout the partnership.

The agreement therefore goes beyond simply changing the brand on Nigeria’s national-team jerseys, as it could create a new commercial relationship designed to generate income while supplying equipment to the country’s various football teams.

The new partnership is expected to mark the beginning of Nigeria’s relationship with Adidas next year, bringing an end to the current kit arrangement and ushering in a new era for the Super Eagles and other national teams.

.NSC split over choice of Normalisation C’ttee Chair

By Tony Ubani, Patrick Omorodion, Jacob Ajom, Johnbosco Agbakwuru, Emma Jemegah

LAGOS — President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football to overcome repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and world tournaments, following the resignation of Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau as president of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.

Vanguard had exclusively reported on Thursday, of the resignation the NFF board.

President Tinubu said: “The reform must respond to a long-standing need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across Nigerian football.”

The President noted that while other sports had recorded meaningful progress since reset of the sports sector under the re-established National Sports Commission, football has continued to struggle because of structural weaknesses within the system.

“Football, Nigeria’s most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system,” Tinubu said.

He stressed that Nigerian football must begin to match the country’s exceptional talent, passion and resources with stronger institutions and sustained performance.

President Tinubu directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, NSC, to work with the NFF Secretariat and relevant football stakeholders to ensure continuity in essential football administration and facilitate a broad, consultative reform process.

The process will include appropriate engagement with Federation of International Football Associations, FIFA, and Confederation of African Football, CAF, while safeguarding Nigeria’s obligations within the international football framework.

The President called on football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition and work together to build a stronger, more accountable and successful football system.

Gusau officially announced his resignation at a press conference in Abuja yesterday.

Meanwhile former coach of Enyimba International of Aba, Kadiri Ikhana has called for the prosecution of Alhaji Gusau and his board members just as former Green Eagles star, Chief Felix Owolabi lamented the destruction of Nigeria’s football under the former board.

Their teammate and former captain, Chief Segun Odegbami who was in the forefront of those calling for the resignation of Gusau said his resignation now provides the opportunity for Nigeria to clean up the rot at the NFF, while former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, who equally served as one time Chairman, Sokoto State Football Association, Dr. Danladi Bako, warned that those who served with Gusau must not be recycled.

Shockingly, the search for who heads the Normalisation Committee to steer the NFF before a new election is conducted has however, split the leadership of the supervisory body, the National Sports Commission, it was also gathered.

I stepped down for love of country — Gusau

“After consultation with family, friends and stakeholders, I just want to tell you that I have decided to resign from my position,” Gusau said while briefing the media yesterday.

“As Nigerians, nobody is greater than this country. We all love our country and its progress. And as people who have been in football and managing football, we need to look at ourselves and ask, ‘What next?’ So we made a lot of consultations.”

Gusau added that he also advised members of the NFF board to follow his footsteps, clarifying however, that he cannot say whether they would heed his advice but Vanguard gathered that the entire board has resigned.

A few minutes after Gusau’s announcement, the NFF said on its X page that Dr. Mohammed Sanusi had also stepped down as the federation’s General Secretary.

The mass resignation comes a few weeks after the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition’s inception in 1991 and this disappointment triggered backlash for the NFF board members.

Vanguard understands that the NFF leadership was pressured to step down after intervention from top brass of the federal government, from the National Sports Commission, NSC, to the presidency.

Gusau was elected NFF president in 2022 and his tenure was supposed to end next month, with an elective congress scheduled for September 27.

The fate of the congress is uncertain as a Normalisation Committee will be set up to oversee the federation’s affairs until further notice.

Under Gusau’s leadership, the Super Eagles, like the Falcons, also failed to qualify for the men’s 2026 World Cup, despite Africa getting 10 slots for the first time. The failure also extended to age-grade football, with the men’s U-17 and U-20 teams missing out on their World Cups.

My scorecard

Reflecting on his tenure, Gusau said: “These three years and 11 months did not just come like that. At least, we have something that we can tell Nigerians and the world that we have achieved for the little opportunity we had during this period.”

Gusau highlighted the revival of coaching education as one of the major achievements of his administration. He said all categories of coaching courses had been conducted, with the long-delayed CAF A Licence course scheduled to commence on September 16.

He also pointed to improved stability in the domestic leagues, particularly the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, saying his administration had restored greater certainty to the football calendar and made the competition more organised and competitive.

On refereeing, Gusau said Nigerian officials had regained prominence in continental competitions, citing the selection of Nigerian referees for semi-final matches at the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

He further disclosed that the NFF’s facility project, initiated in March 2024, was progressing as scheduled, with one phase already completed and the entire project expected to be delivered by March next year.

His resignation now leaves Nigerian football facing a fresh leadership transition, with attention expected to shift to the NFF’s statutory succession process and the future of the remaining members of the Executive Committee.

A few minutes after Gusau’s announcement, the NFF said on its X page that Dr. Sanusi had also stepped down as the federation’s General Secretary.

Gusau was elected NFF president in 2022, and his tenure was supposed to end next month, with an elective congress scheduled for September 27.

The fate of the congress is uncertain as reports claim that a normalisation committee will be set up to oversee the federation’s affairs until further notice.

General Secretary also quits

Meanwhile, NFF General Secretary Dr. Sanusi, has confirmed that he has resigned, amid a major leadership shake-up at the country’s football governing body.

Sanusi’s resignation was confirmed, yesterday, by the former NFF chief scribe himself, according to reports. He reportedly stated that the resignation of both himself and NFF President Gusau was true.

The development comes amid growing pressure on the NFF leadership following a difficult period for Nigerian football, including the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ historic failure to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Sanusi assumed office on March 20, 2015 and spent 11 years, four months and 28 days before his resignation.

His tenure eclipsed that of his closest rival, Sani Toro who served from December 21, 1993 to May 3, 1999 which was five years and six months.

Only third mass resignation in history

The latest development adds a new chapter to the history of football development in Nigeria.

The resignation of the Gusau-led board is only the third occasion on which the entire board of the football governing body had resigned in one fell swoop.

The first time, in recorded history was the board led by then Director of Prisons, Francis Giwa-Osagie. His board was constituted on January 20, 1964 and resigned on June 5, 1967.

That board was succeeded by another headed by Justice Chuba Ikpeazu, a Lagos High Court Judge.

The latest mass resignation, therefore, places the Gusau board in company of two previous boards that exited collectively, pointing to the extraordinary nature of the current crisis.

The wholesale departure of the Gusau-led administration now opens another uncertain chapter of Nigerian football which has been in comatose for over a decade.

Gusau, others should be probed -Ikhana, Owolabi

Former coach Enyimba International of Aba, Kadiri Ikhana, has called for the prosecution of former NFF, President, Alhaji Gusau and his board members.

Reacting to the resignation of Gusau, Ikhana, a member of the Green Eagles 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winning team, said the board headed by Gusau committed lots of atrocities and should account for the misdeeds.

“It’s not enough to just allow them to resign. What happens to the huge amount of money squandered in their tenure? What of the maladministration that happened that made us lose two World Cups?

“Nigerians deserve to know and the only way is to send either the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC or Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC after them. They should be made to account for every money advanced to them,” the former CAF Coach of the Year said.

However, another former Green Eagles star, Chief Felix Owolabi, lamented the destruction of Nigeria’s football under the former board.

Chief Owolabi described as”shameful” the level of backwardness of Nigerian football, praying for another composition that will right the wrong of the Gusau-led board.

His resignation provides opportunity for thorough clean up – Odegbami

On his part, another former Nigeria international and Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami said: “His (Gusau’s) resignation removes the whole issue of FIFA ban, FIFA ban, and now provides the opportunity for us to clean up whatever it is that we are complaining about.”

Odegbami says Gusau’s resignation could open the door for a major change in Nigerian football.

Bako points way forward, warns against recycling their mentors

Danladi Bako, on the way forward, said: “For those conversant with sports in general and football in particular, the events of the last 24 hours signalling the resignation of the NFF President, Gusau certainly comes as a welcome development and timely response to public opinion characterised by very intense pressure.

“It is not only gratifying but highly responsible on the part of all functionaries within the football fraternity that prosecuted this push for change.

“All the elders within the public sphere and sympathisers within and outside government who encouraged Alhaji Gusau must also be commended. The general opinion that Alhaji Gusau and the Executive board needed to go was clearly overwhelming, and the authorities heeded to the voice of the people by fashioning out an exit strategy.

“Permit me to also commend the immediate past President Alhaji Gusau for the courage to read public opinion and accept the feelings of Nigerians by stepping aside. That action alone will ensure the nation or his state better utilizes him in some other capacity someday.

“The way forward is for the dissolution of the Executive board properly following the relevant articles of the statutes giving way for the establishment of a Normalisation Committee to prepare the stage for fresh elections after restructuring the composition of the Executive Board and the Congress. This should be done in three months. It must also take a close look at the judgment of Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court in 2010 nullifying the nomenclature “Federation” in its usage as against “Association” as it was at inception. It has to seek the advice and consequential position of the Attorney-General of the Federation on which legal route to follow.

“It is my wish that the National Sports Commission, NSC management will not recycle some of their mentors that served with them in the Football Federation in the past as members of the Normalisation Committee. We can’t go back to install people who ruined the last twelve years of our football into a reform committee.

“For once, there is Renewed Hope on the horizon for Nigerian Football, at least if Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie will not be at the next FIFA World Cups, the younger Eagles and Falconets are primed to qualify in the immediate future.”

Sports commission splits over choice of Normalisation C’ttee Chair

Following the resignation of Gusau, and other board members, the National Sports Commission, NSC chieftains at the commission are at loggerheads over who to name as Chairman of the Normalisation Committee.

It was gathered that the NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Bukola Olopade, disagreed over who should head the Normalisation Committee.

Sources said both of them had agreed to force the NFF board to step aside but were in disagreement over who to choose as Chairman of the Normalisation Committee.

According to a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, while Mallam Dikko prefers Musa Ahmadu, Olopade prefers Amaju Pinnick.

“We’ve seen this movie before. When administrators fight, players suffer, sponsors run, and Federation of International Football Association, FIFA, starts asking questions,” the source added.

The ‘Normalisation Committee’ being suggested will take charge of the NFF for a period of three months.

The terms of reference for the committee will include the conduct of fresh elections for a new executive of the NFF.

This will, no doubt, affect the original schedule for the election which was originally fixed for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

Recall that Vanguard reported how the NFF board quit following intense pressure after poor management of Nigerian football and funds.

As a matter of fact, the Department of State Services, DSS, joined other security operatives in investigating the NFF over utilisation of the N17billion Federal Government intervention fund released to the Federation for players’ wages and bonuses.

NFF statutory rules on resignation

The resignation of the NFF president is the most trending news in Nigeria today.

This action followed the cry of Nigerians over the failure of the Super Eagles and Super Falcons, among other national teams to qualify for the 2026 and 2027 World Cups respectively.

Angry football fans as well as stakeholders were united in their call for the Gusau-led board to throw in the towel, so that a new lease of life could be breathed into football administration to revive the fortunes of the national teams as well as put a long lasting structure in place to engender real development of the country’s football.

According to the Statutes which the NFF operates with, an officer or Executive Committee member, including the President, may voluntarily tender a resignation from office, following a personal or committee decisions and must be submitted to the NFF Secretariat or Congress.

The resignation tendered to the NFF Secretariat is placed before an emergency or ordinary session of the NFF Congress for official ratification and administrative next steps.

In order not to allow a vacuum, the Statutes makes provision for Interim and Replacement Provisions.

When a vacancy arises due to resignation or permanent disability of an officer, the NFF Statutes provides for specific succession protocols, often empowering the remaining Executive Committee members or convening a congress to arrange for a replacement or a time-bound administrative framework in line with FIFA and Confederation of African Football, CAF, regulations, pending an election.

What the Statutes say about Normalisation Committee

The NFF Statutes doesn’t make any room for a Normalisation Committee, which is a temporal governance intervention adopted by FIFA.

Under FIFA principles, a normalisation committee is an ad-hoc interim body appointed directly by FIFA (in consultation with CAF) as a measure of last resort when the normal democratic or administrative functioning of a member association breaks down.

The duties of this Normalisation Committee include the running the daily administrative affairs of the federation, reviewing and reforming existing statutes to align with global standards, and organising fresh, credible elections.

Former Secretary-General of the defunct NFA, Alhaji Sani Toro, however, said that since the tenure of the Gusau board expires September 28, 2026, the Normalisation Committee was necessary but it must be constituted in consultation with CAF which stands for FIFA.

The National Sports Commission, NSC, has endorsed Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, erstwhile Deputy General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, as interim General Secretary of the federation following the resignation of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the Executive Committee.

The development is part of sweeping interim measures announced by the NFF on Thursday as the Federal Government moves to overhaul the administration of Nigerian football.

In a statement published on its official website, the NFF said Ikpeme would oversee the federation’s secretariat in his new capacity.

“Following Thursday’s resignations of Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau as President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Dr Mohammed Sanusi as General Secretary, and members of the Executive Committee, the National Sports Commission has endorsed Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, until now Deputy General Secretary, to oversee the NFF Secretariat as interim General Secretary,” the federation said.

The NFF also appointed its Director of Media and Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire, as interim Deputy General Secretary.

The shake-up has effectively suspended the electoral process that was scheduled to produce a new leadership for the federation next month.

“All processes initiated in preparation for the NFF Elective Congress scheduled for 27 September have also been suspended,” the NFF said.

The latest development leaves the administration of Nigerian football under an interim structure pending further decisions by the relevant authorities.

Mikel Arteta revealed he has had difficult conversations with forwards Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus as both Brazilian internationals appear set to depart Arsenal.

“It’s inevitable, at some point you need to have certain discussions and say certain things that sometimes are tough,” said Arteta.

Martinelli left training early on Thursday amid speculation he is set for a move to Saudi side Al Hilal for a fee that could reportedly rise to £50million ($68 million).

“I think everybody knows and recognises how much we love Gabi (Martinelli). Whatever the outcome is, it will be because everybody agrees to that,” added Arteta.

Jesus has fallen well down the pecking order during an injury disrupted time in north London and was not even included in training on Thursday as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

“It’s something to do with the numbers that we have in the squad at the moment and the way we’re managing that kind of situation individually with all the players — they have some personal situations,” Arteta said of the former Manchester City striker.

Arsenal have been linked with bolstering their forward line with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez.

The Argentine is caught in an acrimonious stand-off after Atletico refused to let him depart the Spanish capital for Barcelona.

“Don’t go there,” said Arteta about Arsenal’s interest in Alvarez. “I’m not going to make any comment about any player that is not with us.”

Ezri Konsa is already an Arsenal player and could make his debut back at Villa Park on Monday after securing a £51 million move from Aston Villa.

The England international could receive a frosty reception but Arteta said that would not influence his decision in throwing Konsa into action.

“If I see something different in the player then I may have a question about that, but the way I’ve seen Ezri since day one, knowing his personality really well and through people that have worked with him, I have no concern there.”

Bruno Guimaraes could also be fit to make his first competitive Arsenal appearance after missing the 3-0 win over Coventry last weekend due to a groin problem.

Raphinha and Fermin Lopez goals helped Spanish champions Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on Thursday in La Liga to continue their perfect start to the season.

The Catalan giants eased to a solid victory over their Basque visitors in their first game of the season at the partially rebuilt Camp Nou, with new arrival Rodri coming on for his Barca debut.

Raphinha rounded the goalkeeper and slid home in the 37th minute to give Barca the lead and Lopez netted after 82 minutes to secure the points, with Barca missing several chances for more goals and twice hitting the woodwork.

Barca coach Hansi Flick made three changes to the team that thrashed Elche 5-0 last weekend, handing Anthony Gordon his first start for the club, while bringing Pedri Gonzalez into midfield and picking Pau Cubarsi in defence.

The German kept Raphinha playing up front as a makeshift number nine, after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.

Barca have fruitlessly tried to pry Julian Alvarez away from Atletico Madrid, who will not negotiate with the Spanish champions for the Argentina forward.

However, Raphinha netted twice from his striker’s role against Elche and was on target again for Barca at Camp Nou, giving them a deserved lead at half-time.

The Brazilian nodded against the post from Xavi Espart’s cross midway through the first half and Lamine Yamal’s follow-up effort was deflected wide, with Barca controlling the game.

Eventually, they took the lead when Pedri slipped Raphinha through on goal, with the Brazilian rounding Unai Simon and rolling home.

Teenage star Yamal should have doubled Barca’s lead before the interval but Simon made a fine save to deny him, while Gordon complained he would have had an open goal if the Spain international had knocked the ball across to him.

Gordon arrowed a shot narrowly over early in the second half as Barcelona probed for a second goal.

Yamal, still not at his best level since suffering a hamstring injury in April, hit the crossbar with an effort from the edge of the box. Simon saved twice from Lopez, who netted a brace in the opener.

Flick sent on former Manchester City midfielder Rodri for his debut in midfield, leaving 10 Spaniards and Gordon on the pitch for Barca.

The champions were in the ascendancy but Athletic threatened on a rare venture forward, with Oihan Sancet drilling against the post.

Barcelona eventually found their second after a mistake from Athletic defender Aymeric Laporte, clumsily nudging Barca substitute Karim Adeyemi’s cross past Simon, for Lopez to tuck into an empty net.

Adeyemi should have netted a third late on when Yamal picked him out at the back post but Simon denied the German from point-blank range.

Danny Welbeck netted his first Chelsea goal as the Blues shrugged aside third-tier Luton 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to reach the League Cup third round.

The front three of Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers caught the eye in a 3-2 win at Fulham on Monday to open the Xabi Alonso era at Chelsea with victory.

But 35-year-old Welbeck showed he will be a useful addition to the Chelsea squad by heading in Malo Gusto’s cross to break Luton’s resistence after a goalless first half.

Hakeem Odoffin’s own goal killed the tie off after another dangerous delivery by Estevao as Chelsea set up a home tie against Leeds in the last 32.

Mike Penders started in goal for Chelsea after Robert Sanchez’s error-strewn display against Fulham.

And Alonso may soon have the experience of Emi Martinez to count on with a deal to bring the Argentina international to London from Aston Villa reportedly close to completion.

…Orders comprehensive reform of Nigerian football

ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Malam Shehu Dikko, to work with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Secretariat and relevant football stakeholders to ensure continuity in essential football administration and facilitate a broad reform of the country’s football sector.

The directive is part of a comprehensive reform ordered by the President to address Nigeria’s repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and global football competitions.

Tinubu said the reform should strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, player development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across Nigerian football.

“The reform must respond to a longstanding need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across Nigerian football,” the President said.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu noted that while other sports had recorded meaningful progress following the reset of the sector under the re-established NSC, football had continued to struggle because of structural weaknesses.

“Football, Nigeria’s most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system,” he said.

The President stressed the need for Nigerian football to match the country’s abundant talent, passion and resources with stronger institutions and sustained performance.

As part of the reform process, Dikko was directed to work with the NFF Secretariat and other stakeholders to maintain essential football administration while facilitating broad consultations on the way forward.

The process will also involve appropriate engagement with the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), while safeguarding Nigeria’s obligations under the international football framework.

The directive comes against the backdrop of mounting concerns over the performance and administration of Nigerian football, including the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Falcons also failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, ending Nigeria’s record of appearing at every edition of the competition since its inception in 1991.

Tinubu called on football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition and work together towards building a stronger, more accountable and successful football system.

Tottenham Hotspur continued their summer binge when they signed Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush on loan from Manchester City.

The 27-year-old joined on a season-long loan but Tottenham said that “the deal includes an obligation to make the move permanent next summer”.

That will cost £60 million pounds ($82mn), British media reported.

Marmoush became Tottenham’s second signing from City in a matter of days, after Brazil winger Savio joined Tuesday for a reported initial fee of £75 million — and scored on his debut on Wednesday.

After the Savio deal, Tottenham’s overall outlay in the summer transfer window had passed £300 million.

Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke all joined earlier for hefty fees and defenders Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi came in on free transfers.

“Omar is exactly the kind of player we want at this club – ambitious, hungry and determined to make a difference,” said Tottenham head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, on the club website.

“He brings pace, intelligence and a real threat in front of goal.”

Marmoush, who is 27, joined City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2025 but, with Erling Haaland established at centre forward, struggled for playing time in his preferred position. He scored 16 goals in 62 appearances for City.

He has played 55 times for Egypt, scoring 11 times and appeared in all five matches as his country reached the round of 16 at this summer’s World Cup.

“It feels amazing to be here,” Marmoush told Tottenham’s website.

“Tottenham Hotspur is one of the biggest clubs in England, if not the world, and the project was very attractive to me.”

Two-time defending champions Paris Saint-Germain were handed meetings with Barcelona, Manchester City and Aston Villa among their eight matches in the league phase of this season’s Champions League, as the draw took place on Thursday.

PSG, who beat Arsenal on penalties in May to retain the trophy, will play Barcelona, Roma, Turkish champions Galatasaray and Slovan Bratislava of Slovakia at home.

Luis Enrique’s team will travel to England twice to face City and Villa. They beat both teams on the way to winning their first Champions League title in 2025. The French champions will also go to Spain to play Villarreal and Italy to take on a Como side coached by Cesc Fabregas.

The first matches in this season’s league phase will be played between Tuesday, September 8 and Thursday, September 10, with the final games in late January. UEFA is expected to announce the full fixture schedule on Saturday.

Last season’s runners-up Arsenal, the Premier League champions, will notably host Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Lille as well as Sabah, the club from Azerbaijan who came through four two-legged qualifying ties to reach the league phase for the first time.

The Gunners have a tough list of away ties against Bayern Munich, Real Betis, Napoli and Slavia Prague.

Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool will be at home to Atletico Madrid, Porto, Villarreal and Lens, while playing Inter Milan, Club Brugge, Fenerbahce and Austrian league phase debutants LASK away.

Manchester United, who were not in the first pot of seeds, have home games against Bayern Munich, Roma, RB Leipzig and Sabah and also a series of difficult away fixtures against Atletico, Sporting of Portugal, Villarreal and Como.

Other notable games include Manchester City visiting Barcelona and Real Madrid entertaining Inter, while last season’s Europa League winners Villa must go to Barcelona and play Dortmund at home, while also tackling Istanbul giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

The latter are appearing in the Champions League proper for the first time since 2008/09 after beating Lyon in the play-offs this week.

New names in this season’s competition are Como, who have upset the traditional order in Serie A, and Sabah, while LASK made it to this stage for the first time after a stunning comeback win over Celtic in the play-offs.

Last year’s Norwegian champions Viking have reached the Champions League proper for the first time too, and they have a glamorous fixture schedule that includes Bayern, Atletico, Villa and Napoli.

This is the third season since the introduction of the new format for the Champions League, with 36 teams now all pooled together in one giant league and each playing games against eight different opponents.

This season’s final will be played at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on June 5, 2027.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City have been handed challenging opponents in the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase following Thursday’s draw.

The 36-team league phase draw has produced several high-profile fixtures, with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain set to face Barcelona and Manchester City.

Arsenal face Real Madrid, Bayern

Arsenal, who reached last season’s Champions League final, will face a difficult set of opponents.

Mikel Arteta’s side will host Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Lille and Sabah, while travelling to Bayern Munich, Real Betis, Napoli and Slavia Prague.

The meeting with Real Madrid will be one of the standout fixtures of the league phase.

Liverpool draw Atletico Madrid, Inter

Liverpool will face Atletico Madrid at home and travel to Inter Milan in what are among the toughest fixtures in their schedule.

The Reds will also play Porto and Villarreal at home, with away trips to Club Brugge and Fenerbahce.

Their other fixtures will see them host Lens and travel to LASK.

Manchester City handed PSG, Barcelona tests

Manchester City have arguably received one of the most difficult draws, with the Premier League club set to face both Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

City will host PSG, while their meeting with Barcelona will take place in Spain.

They will also face Sporting Club and Napoli at home, with away games against Porto, RB Leipzig and Lens. AEK Athens will visit the Etihad.

The Barcelona fixture will also provide a reunion with former City midfielder Rodri, who is now at the Catalan club.

PSG face Barcelona, Man City

Defending champions PSG will begin their title defence against a formidable group of opponents.

Luis Enrique’s side will host Barcelona and Manchester City, while also facing Roma and Aston Villa at home.

Their away fixtures will be against Manchester City, Aston Villa, Galatasaray, Villarreal and Como.

PSG are aiming to win the Champions League for a third consecutive season.

Barcelona draw Man City, PSG

Barcelona have also been handed a demanding league-phase schedule.

They will host Manchester City, Aston Villa, Feyenoord and Como, while travelling to PSG, Sporting Club, Galatasaray and Sabah.

Real Madrid to face Arsenal

Real Madrid will host Inter Milan, PSV Eindhoven, RB Leipzig and LASK.

Their away fixtures will be against Arsenal, Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk and AEK Athens.

Atletico Madrid to meet Liverpool, Man United

Atletico Madrid will host Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Fenerbahce and Viking.

Diego Simeone’s side will travel to Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven, Bodo/Glimt and Stuttgart.

Inter Milan draw Liverpool, Real Madrid

Inter Milan will host Liverpool, Club Brugge, Shakhtar Donetsk and Stuttgart.

Their away fixtures will see them face Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Feyenoord and Slovan Bratislava.

The league phase sees each team play eight matches against eight different opponents, with four games at home and four away.

A new UEFA rule for this season also prevents a club from hosting a team it faced at home in either of the previous two league-phase campaigns.

That rule affects potential fixtures involving Liverpool and Real Madrid, as well as Inter Milan and Arsenal.

Following the resignation of the President of Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, and other board members, the National Sports Commission, NSC, chieftains are at loggerheads over who to name Normalisation Committee Chairman.

Recall that Vanguard reported how the NFF board quit following intense pressure after poor management of Nigerian football and funds.

In fact, the Department of State Services, DSS, joined other security operatives in investigating the NFF over the utilisation of the N17bn Federal Government intervention fund released to the Federation for players’ wages and bonuses.
NFF scribe confirms resignation

Meanwhile, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, has confirmed that he has resigned, amid a major leadership shake-up at the country’s football governing body.

Sanusi’s resignation was confirmed on Thursday by the former NFF chief scribe himself, according to reports.

Nomalisation Committee

The developments has thrown up the need for a nomalisation committee.

However, the National Sports Commission, NSC, chieftain are at loggerheads over who to name Normalisation Committee Chairman.

Reports say NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Bukola Olopade, are in a major disagreement over who should head the Normalisation Committee.

Two camps, stalled decisions, and panic among stakeholders.

Sources said both of them had agreed to force the NFF board to step aside. But they are in disagreement over who to choose as Chairman of the Normalisation Committee.

According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Mallam Dikko prefers Musa Ahmadu, while Olopade prefers Amaju Pinnick.

“We’ve seen this movie before. When administrators fight, players suffer, sponsors run, and FIFA starts asking questions,” the source added.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been the subject of a bankruptcy petition filed by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over an unpaid tax bill.

The 48-year-old former England international appeared in court on Wednesday after HMRC brought the case against him.

A bankruptcy petition is a formal application to a court seeking repayment of an outstanding debt.

HMRC describes bankruptcy proceedings as a “last resort” when pursuing unpaid taxes.

HMRC does not comment on individual taxpayer cases because of confidentiality laws. However, when asked about Carragher’s situation, the tax authority issued a statement.

“We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort,” an HMRC spokesperson said.

Sources familiar with the situation expect the matter to be resolved quickly, with Carragher understood to be taking steps to settle the issue.

Carragher spent 17 years in Liverpool’s first team after coming through the club’s academy, making 737 appearances during a one-club professional career.

The former centre-back won several major honours with Liverpool, including the Champions League in 2005 and the UEFA Cup in 2001.

He retired from football in 2013 but quickly transitioned into broadcasting, becoming one of the most recognisable pundits covering the Premier League.

Carragher remains a long-standing member of Sky Sports’ football coverage and also appears regularly on Stick to Football, a podcast produced by Gary Neville’s The Overlap.
