3)       Reading – students choose an article from a reputable source related to the topic and share it with the teacher; the teacher adapts the text complexity using Diffit tool; the teacher creates their own exercises based on the adapted text

The tool used here (Diffit) is a useful tool teachers can use if they want to differentiate or adapt the same activity (a text, a video, etc) to different levels and in order to achieve different aims. The tool is also available online.

Parengtos užduočių rinkinys pamokų ciklui tema “Each drop is important“ skirtos 5 kl. (aukštesniųjų kalbinių gebėjimų, mokslo metų pabaigoje) arba 6 kl. mokiniams (vidutinių kalbinių gebėjimų; yra 1 sudėtinga teksto suvokimo užduotis online ir idėja mokymosi sunkumų turintiems mok.), siekiant tobulinti jų skaitymo, rašymo, kalbėjimo ir žodyno vartojimo gebėjimus, taip pat formuoti atsakingą požiūrį į vandens išteklius. Užduotys sukurtos remiantis informaciniu tekstu apie vandens svarbą, todėl pirmiausia lavinami skaitymo suvokimo gebėjimai. Tekste pateikiami faktai ir pavyzdžiai leidžia mokiniams susipažinti su pasaulinėmis vandens naudojimo problemomis. Skaitymo užduotys, tokios kaip teksto spragų pildymas ir „True / False / Doesn’t say“ tipo klausimai padeda mokiniams geriau suprasti tekstą ir ugdo gebėjimą rasti svarbią informaciją bei ją panaudoti kitoms užduotims.

The role of eTwinning projects in enhancing digital literacy.

eTwinning projects play a crucial role in enhancing digital literacy by providing students with opportunities to engage in collaborative learning experiences across borders, utilizing various digital tools and platforms. These projects not only improve language skills but also foster critical competencies such as information evaluation, responsible online behavior, and effective communication in a digital context, preparing students for the demands of the modern world.

The Importance of Digital Literacy

– Digital literacy is essential for ESL learners to navigate and thrive in a tech-driven environment.

– It enhances language acquisition and prepares students for the job market.

Digital literacy is increasingly vital in today’s educational landscape, enabling students to effectively navigate, evaluate, and create information using digital technologies. This competency not only enhances language learning by providing access to diverse resources and interactive tools but also prepares learners for success in a technology-driven job market and everyday life challenges.

Benefits of Integrating Digital Skills

– Enhances Engagement: Interactive tools make learning more engaging.

– Fosters Collaboration: Digital platforms encourage teamwork and communication.

Integrating digital skills into education offers numerous benefits, including enhanced engagement and personalized learning experiences tailored to individual student needs. By utilizing technology, students can access a wealth of information, collaborate effectively with peers, and develop critical skills such as problem-solving and digital communication, which are essential for success in the modern workforce.

The Examples – Digital skills and English language teaching

Now I will share some of examples from eTwinning projects. I suppose there are 2 most likeable activities for students, e.i. to create an avatar and the logo of the project. These activities can be completed using Canva, Padlet, TikTok and other apps.

Media Creation Projects – Digital skills and English language teaching

Assign tasks involving video, audio, or digital storytelling. For video, audio and digital storrytelling, there is a great number of apps. For example, for video, I started using PowToon 10 years ago. Now our smart phones and AI can do everything, for audio our smart phones have voice recorder and for digital storytelling, I have used Sutori, Learning Apps.org, Book creator, Padlet etc.

All of them encourage creativity while improving language skills. Here is the example of Book creator

Pen Pals – Digital skills and English language teaching

Set up exchanges with students from other countries using mail. For example, creative short-term projects as sending Christmas or Easter cards and writing traditions of your family or country and sending wishes. It is not ordinary for students today but after receiving an envelope from other country, getting paper not digital cards and seeing their happy faces worth it. And it can be done in eTwinning.

This activity enhances writing skills and familiarity with communication. Examples:

Problem-solving tasks – Digital skills and English language teaching

Problems can be solved using: Linoit, PowToon, etc. At first students created their group‘s logo, then introduced the topic, gave 2 examples and included photos.

After that, partners thought how to solve the issue. Then a short video was created.

There were only some examples of how to implement digital skills and apps within the English language teaching curriculum, emphasizing the benefits of eTwinning projects.

Challenges and Considerations

The main challenge is that teachers must stay updated with technology trends.

The challenges of integrating digital skills into education include significant disparities in access to technology, which can hinder students’ ability to develop essential digital competencies. Additionally, many educators feel unprepared or lack confidence in teaching these skills, highlighting the need for ongoing professional development and support to effectively incorporate digital literacy into the curriculum.

Conclusion – Digital skills and English language teaching

In conclusion, continuous professional development in digital literacy is essential for educators to stay current with evolving technologies and effective teaching strategies, ensuring they can effectively integrate these skills into their classrooms. Engaging in eTwinning projects offers teachers valuable opportunities to collaborate with peers across Europe, share best practices, and gain insights into innovative approaches to teaching digital skills. By participating in these initiatives, educators can enhance their teaching practices, ultimately leading to improved student outcomes in an increasingly digital world.

The Lighthouse Year 2024

The aim and objectives of this event:

To reveal educators’ good practices in preparing methodological tools related to the lighthouse theme, which would help improve the learning outcomes of various students’ abilities.

Objectives:

1. Prepare an original educational methodological tool related to the lighthouse theme;

2. Provide a description of the educational methodological tool;

3. Share good practices with our and other countries’ educators.

Working in pairs and using 15 active vocabulary words related to the lighthouse theme create a story of 100 words. If you do not know the meaning of the given words, find out the meaning on the internet.

Susipažinę su švyturiais ir pasitikrinę žinias viktorinose, moksleiviai gali  paruošti vaizdinį pristatymą, kuriame parodys modernaus švyturio dizainą, įskaitant atvaizdus, diagramas ir pagrindinių funkcijų aprašymus.

Taip pat moksleiviai sieks aiškiai paaiškinti savo švyturio dizaino pasirinkimo priežastis ir kaip jie tenkina jūrų laivybos poreikius XXI amžiuje. 

Ugdytiniai bus pasirengę atsakyti į savo bendraamžių klausimus apie savo sukurto švyturio dizaino koncepciją ir jos įgyvendinamumą.

Pamoka „Exploring lighthouses“ gali būti integruojama su technologijomis ir menais.

The lesson is aimed at teenagers at level B1+/B2, working in smaller groups. This is a class of thirteen 15 year-old students who enjoy working in groups. Both tools used are available online and are free to use after registration. The first one (Wordwall) helps both students and teachers to create materials suitable for game-based learning, while Google slides encourage cooperation (collaborative work).

Students are sent the link to do the introductory activity on their own. This way they discover the topic of the lesson.

Students are divided in groups of three or four and asked to research the following questions:

Group 1 – World’s first known lighthouse

Group 2 – The oldest lighthouses in the world

Group 3 – Symbolism of lighthouses

They are asked to write down / add their findings in a collaborative Google slides presentation.
