Every month, the U.S. Department of State publishes the Visa Bulletin — a critical document that tells immigrants and their employers exactly where things stand in the green card line. The March 2026 edition includes some meaningful forward movement across several employment-based categories, and USCIS has confirmed that applicants may use the more favorable Dates for Filing chart this month. Here’s what you need to know.

The Two Charts — and Why They Both Matter

The Visa Bulletin contains two separate priority date charts, and understanding the difference between them is essential before you take any action on your case.

The Final Action Dates (FAD) chart is the one that ultimately controls when your green card can be approved. For USCIS to grant an immigrant visa or adjust your status to lawful permanent resident, your priority date must fall on or before the FAD cut-off listed for your category and country of chargeability. This is the definitive approval gate — crossing it means a green card can actually be issued.

The Dates for Filing (DFF) chart operates differently. When USCIS designates this chart for a given month — as it has for March 2026 — eligible applicants can submit their adjustment of status application (Form I-485) even if the Final Action Date hasn’t yet been reached. Filing under the DFF chart is a strategic advantage: it allows you to obtain work authorization (EAD) and advance parole travel documents while your application is pending, even though USCIS cannot approve the green card itself until your Final Action Date becomes current.

Think of it this way: the Dates for Filing chart opens the door to the waiting room, while the Final Action Dates chart determines when your name is actually called.

USCIS Chart Designations for March 2026

USCIS has confirmed the following for adjustment of status filings this month:

Family-Sponsored Categories: Use the Dates for Filing chart from the March 2026 Visa Bulletin.

Employment-Based Categories: Use the Dates for Filing chart from the March 2026 Visa Bulletin.

This designation applies across the board for March. Compare your priority date against the DFF cut-offs — not the Final Action Dates — when deciding whether you’re eligible to file your I-485 this month.

Key Employment-Based Movements This Month

March 2026 brings noteworthy progress in several employment-based preference categories compared to February. Here are the highlights:

EB-2 (Advanced Degree Professionals & Exceptional Ability)

For applicants chargeable to most countries (Worldwide), the Dates for Filing column is current — meaning eligible applicants can file their I-485 right now. However, the Final Action Date for this Worldwide category is not yet current, so while filing is permitted, green card approval must still wait. For EB-2 India and EB-2 China specifically, both categories have moved forward relative to February — India advanced by several months and China also progressed — bringing more applicants within reach of the DFF chart and pushing Final Action Dates closer to current status.

EB-1 (Priority Workers)

India and China EB-1 applicants will see continued advancement in priority dates — roughly four or more months of forward movement compared to February. In some situations, the Dates for Filing date is now ahead of the Final Action Date, which means applicants who previously could not file now have that opportunity this month.

EB-3 and Other Employment-Based Preferences

EB-3 categories posted positive movement for most countries in both the Final Action and Dates for Filing charts relative to February. EB-4 (Certain Special Immigrants) also saw notable advancement after several months of minimal progress — welcome news for applicants in that category who have been waiting.

What This All Means in Practice

Filing opportunity is real this month. Because USCIS has designated the Dates for Filing chart for both family and employment categories, many applicants who could not previously submit their I-485 now may do so. Early filing unlocks important benefits — namely, the ability to apply for a work permit (EAD) and advance parole, which allow you to work legally and travel internationally while waiting for your Final Action Date to become current.

Filing early does not mean early approval. This is perhaps the most important thing to understand. Submitting your I-485 under the DFF chart gets your application into the queue and secures those interim benefits, but USCIS will only approve the actual green card once your Final Action Date becomes current. Be patient — the two milestones are separate.

Backlogged categories are seeing real progress. For EB-2 India and EB-2 China applicants — two of the most congested categories in the U.S. immigration system — the March 2026 movements represent genuine and meaningful forward momentum. If you’ve been monitoring the Bulletin for months or years, now is the time to take a close look at whether your date has become actionable.

Your Action Items for March 2026

Compare your priority date against both the Final Action Dates and Dates for Filing columns in the March 2026 Visa Bulletin.

If your priority date falls before the DFF cut-off for your category, and USCIS has designated that chart for March (which it has), begin preparing your adjustment of status filing now — time-sensitive filing windows can close quickly.

Keep watching future Visa Bulletins for Final Action Date updates, as those will indicate when your permanent residency can actually be granted.

Build Your Path to Permanent Residency

Creating an Express Entry profile is the first and most crucial step toward immigrating to Canada as a skilled worker. If you’re planning to apply for permanent residency through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, or Federal Skilled Trades Program, you’ll need to create an Express Entry profile and enter the candidate pool. This guide walks you through everything you need to know.

What Is the Express Entry System?

Express Entry is Canada’s online system for managing immigration applications for skilled workers. It uses a points-based system, called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), to rank candidates based on factors like age, education, language ability, and work experience. To be considered, you must first create an Express Entry profile and submit it through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Step-by-Step: How to Create an Express Entry Profile

1. Check if you’re eligible
Before you begin, confirm you meet the minimum eligibility requirements for at least one of the Express Entry programs: Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, or Federal Skilled Trades. You can use the official IRCC eligibility tool to assess yourself.

2. Gather your documents
To create an Express Entry profile, you’ll need documents like your passport, language test results (IELTS or CELPIP), an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), and proof of work experience. These documents help IRCC assess your profile and calculate your CRS score.

3. Create an IRCC account
Go to the IRCC website and sign in or create a secure account. This is where you’ll access the online form to create your Express Entry profile.

4. Fill out your profile
Provide accurate details about your education, work history, language test results, family background, and job offers (if any). Be honest—false information can lead to refusal or even a ban from applying again.

5. Submit your profile and enter the pool
Once you’ve completed your profile, submit it. If you’re eligible, you’ll be placed into the Express Entry pool and receive a CRS score.

6. Improve your score (optional but helpful)
While in the pool, you can improve your profile by retaking language tests, gaining more work experience, or obtaining a provincial nomination. This can increase your chances of getting an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

What Happens After You Create an Express Entry Profile?

Once you successfully create your Express Entry profile and enter the pool, your profile is valid for 12 months. During this time, you may receive an Invitation to Apply if your CRS score meets the cut-off in a future Express Entry draw. After receiving an ITA, you’ll have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residence.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When you make an Express Entry profile, accuracy is everything. Double-check your information, make sure your language and education assessments are valid, and ensure your work experience aligns with the National Occupation Classification (NOC) codes.

IRCC Policy Change Leads to Lower CRS Scores and New Opportunities for Express Entry Candidates

Canada’s Express Entry system has undergone a major transformation following the removal of Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points for arranged employment. Implemented by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on March 25, 2025, this change has led to a sharp drop in CRS scores and is reshaping how skilled immigrants qualify for permanent residency.

Under the previous system, candidates could earn an additional 50 or 200 CRS points for a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, depending on the occupation’s classification. These points often played a decisive role in receiving Invitations to Apply (ITAs) during Express Entry draws. However, IRCC has now eliminated these points to promote a fairer and more balanced selection process.

The impact has been immediate. Between March 16 and April 14, 2025, the number of profiles in the 501–600 CRS range dropped by 5,740. Additionally, the number of candidates in the 491–500 range fell by 1,618, and those in the 481–490 range declined by 984. These changes have already led to lower CRS cut-off scores in recent Express Entry draws, opening the door for a wider range of applicants.

According to IRCC, the removal of job offer points is aimed at improving system integrity and preventing misuse or fraudulent employment arrangements. It also shifts the focus toward core human capital factors such as age, education, language proficiency, and work experience — elements that better predict a candidate’s long-term success in Canada.

For candidates hoping to boost their CRS scores, strategies such as improving English or French test results, gaining additional Canadian work experience, or applying through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) remain effective pathways.

This policy shift marks a significant moment in Canadian immigration, offering a more level playing field for skilled workers from around the world.

If you’re applying to visit, study, or work in Canada, you may be required to complete IMM5707, the Family Information Form. This document helps Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) gather details about your immediate family members as part of your temporary residence application.
It includes information about:

Your spouse or common-law partner

Your parents

Your children (biological, adopted, or stepchildren)

On March 25, 2025, the Government of Canada officially removed arranged employment points from the Express Entry system. This change is effective immediately. From now on, candidates will no longer receive the 50 or 200 points previously awarded for arranged employment.

What Are Arranged Employment Points?

Previously, you could earn additional CRS points if you had a valid job offer backed by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or certain LMIA-exempt work permits. Specifically, you could qualify if:

You had a valid, unexpired LMIA for a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 position, along with a permanent, full-time job offer from the same employer listed on the LMIA.

You held a valid work permit based on that LMIA, again supported by a permanent, full-time job offer from the employer named on the permit.

You had worked in Canada for at least one continuous year in a full-time role, with an LMIA-exempt work permit naming your employer, and that employer offered you a permanent, full-time job in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation.

Please note that open work permits were never eligible for arranged employment points.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you have not yet received an Invitation to Apply (ITA), this change will affect you. The government is automatically removing arranged employment points from all Express Entry profiles as of today. You do not need to update your profile manually—the system will adjust it for you.

If you haven’t submitted your profile yet, these points will no longer be available moving forward.

How This Change Might Impact Your Chances

We don’t yet know how many candidates in the pool are affected, but if your profile previously included arranged employment points, your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score will drop by either 50 or 200 points. This will be the case for all other affected candidates as well, which may shift the overall rankings.

If you did not have arranged employment points, your score will remain the same – and there’s a chance that some candidates who were ahead of you may now fall below your ranking.

What Next Steps Should You Take?

At this stage, we recommend to monitor how this change plays out. It’s too soon to know how future draws will be impacted, how many invitations Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will issue, or whether there will be targeted draws for specific occupations.

What we do know is that IRCC’s current focus for 2025 includes:

French-speaking candidates

Canadian Experience Class (CEC) eligible applicants

Workers in priority sectors, particularly healthcare, education, and skilled trades

We’ll continue to monitor the situation closely and reassess your strategy as new information becomes available.

Rachel Bendayan, appointed as Canada’s Immigration Minister in March 2025, brings a strong legal and political background to her new role. Born into a Moroccan-Jewish family in Montreal, Quebec, she holds degrees in International Development and Law from McGill University and represents the Outremont district in Montreal as a Member of Parliament.

What Changes Can We Expect Under Rachel Bendayan?

While no immediate immigration policy changes are expected before the next federal election, Bendayan’s leadership may bring the following refinements:

Emphasis on French-Speaking Immigration

The government is likely to continue prioritizing French-speaking immigrants, particularly in Quebec and other francophone communities.

Policy-Driven Approach

With her legal expertise, Bendayan is expected to introduce structured and policy-focused immigration strategies.

Adjustments to Work Permits and Permanent Residency

Possible modifications to work permit policies and pathways to permanent residency, aligning with government priorities.

Impact on International Students

International students should stay updated on potential policy changes.

Recent reforms have impacted study permits and post-graduate work opportunities.

Universities and colleges may face tighter regulations due to concerns about the effects of international student numbers on housing and job markets.

Changes to Permanent Residency and Temporary Foreign Workers

Canada’s immigration strategy will prioritize individuals already in the country for permanent residency.

Temporary foreign workers and international students may benefit from streamlined pathways to permanent residency.

Stricter regulations on new temporary foreign worker entries could be introduced.

Economic immigration remains a key focus under Bendayan’s leadership.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Stance on Immigration

Immigration policies will aim to address the housing crisis.

Priority will be given to individuals already in Canada for permanent residency.

Temporary foreign worker numbers may be reduced.

Institutions relying on international students could see increased regulations.

What This Means for Canadian Immigrants

Rachel Bendayan’s appointment signals a continuation of structured immigration policies with a focus on refining permanent residency and work permit pathways. While major changes are unlikely in the short term, immigrants should expect adjustments in key areas such as:

French-speaking immigration.

Work permits and permanent residency.

Regulations affecting international students.

As Canada’s immigration policies continue to evolve, staying informed is crucial for those considering or currently undergoing the immigration process.

A significant change is coming for Canadians visiting the U.S. for extended periods. The Trump administration, according to a report in The New York Times, will begin enforcing a previously overlooked immigration law. Starting April 11th, Canadians staying in the U.S. for more than 30 days will have to register with U.S. immigration authorities.

What Does This Mean for Canadian Visitors?

This rule stems from the existing Immigration and Nationality Act. It requires non-U.S. citizens over 14 to register and provide fingerprints if staying longer than 30 days. While this law has been on the books for years, it hasn’t been consistently enforced, especially at land borders.

Key Information for Canadians Traveling to the US

Who’s Affected? Canadians staying in the U.S. for more than 30 days.

What’s Required? Creating an online account with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and scheduling an appointment for fingerprinting and providing biographical information.

What Happens if You Don’t Comply? Penalties could be imposed, though specific details are still unclear.

Who’s Exempt? Green card holders and those entering with valid visas are generally exempt.

Impact on Canadian Travelers

This change will significantly impact:

Canadian retirees who spend winters in the U.S. otherwise known as “Snowbirds“.

Canadians on extended business trips.

Canadians visiting family for over a month.

Why Is this Change Being Made?

This enforcement comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Canada, including trade disputes. The Trump administration’s focus on stricter immigration enforcement is also a factor. This move aligns with broader efforts to enhance border security and track foreign visitors.

What to Do Next

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has yet to release detailed implementation guidelines.

Canadians planning extended U.S. trips should stay informed and monitor official sources for updates.

It is recommended to check the USCIS website for official information.

If you’re a Canadian planning to spend more than a month in the US, be prepared to register with immigration authorities and get fingerprinted. Stay tuned for more details from official sources.

President Donald Trump has introduced a new immigration initiative known as the “Gold Card” visa program, aiming to attract affluent individuals by offering a pathway to U.S. citizenship in exchange for a substantial financial investment. This proposal seeks to replace the existing EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program, which has faced some criticism over the years.

The Gold Card program is designed to streamline the process for wealthy investors, with the administration expressing confidence in its potential to boost the U.S. economy. While the proposal has been announced, its implementation timeline remains uncertain, pending further details and potential legislative action.

How Much Is the Gold Card?

The Gold Card visa requires a $5 million investment from each applicant. This significant sum is intended to attract high-net-worth individuals who can contribute meaningfully to the U.S. economy. The administration believes that by setting this high investment threshold, the program will draw in top-tier global citizens, thereby enhancing economic growth and aiding in reducing the national debt.

What Are the Gold Card Citizenship Requirements?

Specific details regarding the citizenship requirements for Gold Card holders have yet to be fully disclosed. However, it is anticipated that, similar to other investment-based visa programs, applicants will need to undergo a thorough vetting process to ensure they are reputable individuals without criminal backgrounds.

The administration has emphasized that the program aims to attract “world-class global citizens” who can bring entrepreneurial spirit and economic contributions to the United States. Further information on the exact pathway to citizenship, including residency duration and other criteria, is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

How Is a Gold Card Different from EB-5?

The proposed Gold Card visa differs from the existing EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program in several key aspects:

The EB-5 program requires a minimum investment of $1.05 million, or $800,000 if the investment is made in a targeted employment area. The Gold Card visa mandates a $5 million investment.

The EB-5 visa necessitates that the investment leads to the creation or preservation of at least ten full-time jobs for U.S. workers. The Gold Card proposal, however, does not specify a job creation requirement, focusing instead on the investment itself.

The EB-5 program is administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and involves stringent regulatory oversight. Details about the administrative framework for the Gold Card visa, including which government agencies will oversee the program, have not been fully outlined.

The Canadian government has delayed changes to citizenship laws that would have helped some individuals acquire Canadian citizenship. This delay comes as a result of Parliament being prorogued until March 24, 2025, preventing the necessary amendments to the Citizenship Act before the March 19th deadline.

This setback means that individuals who may be eligible for Canadian citizenship but have been unable to obtain it due to existing legal restrictions, often referred to as “lost Canadians,” will have to continue waiting for the promised legislative reforms.

Citizen Law Changes Explained

The Canadian court system has declared a key part of the country’s citizenship law unconstitutional. This law, known as the “second-generation cut-off,” prevents Canadian citizens born abroad from passing their citizenship to their own children born abroad.

The Court Ruling

In late 2023, the Ontario Superior Court ruled this cut-off provision illegal. They gave the federal government six months to fix the law, a deadline that was extended several times.

The Government’s Response

The government introduced a bill (Bill C-71) that would have allowed for citizenship to be passed down to the second generation under certain conditions, such as the parent living in Canada for a significant period.

The Current Situation

The recent proroguing of Parliament has effectively killed Bill C-71.

The government will now miss the court-imposed deadline to fix the citizenship law.

This leaves many individuals and families in uncertainty regarding their citizenship status.

What Happens If the Deadline Is Missed?

The court has two options if the government misses the deadline:

Extend the Deadline

The court could grant the government more time to make the necessary changes to the citizenship law. If the deadline is extended, the current law, with its restrictions on passing citizenship to grandchildren born abroad, would remain in place. This would continue until the government either makes the required changes to the law or misses the extended deadline.

If the Deadline Is Not Extended

The court could declare the “second-generation cut-off” provisions of the Citizenship Act invalid. This would mean these specific rules would no longer be enforceable.

What Can “Lost Canadians” Do Now?

The Canadian government has introduced temporary measures to help some individuals affected by the citizenship law restrictions.

Who May Be Eligible

Individuals who have applied for Canadian citizenship but face delays due to the “second-generation cut-off” provisions.

Individuals whose citizenship applications were previously on hold due to the uncertainty surrounding the law.

How to Apply

Affected individuals can request that their citizenship application be processed urgently.

Reasons for Urgent Processing

Access to essential services: Individuals may request urgent processing if they need citizenship to access healthcare, obtain a Social Insurance Number, or receive a pension.

Employment: Individuals may request urgent processing if they need proof of citizenship for employment purposes.

Family emergencies: Individuals may request urgent processing if they need to travel due to illness or the death of a family member.

Note: These are temporary measures. The long-term solution requires the government to amend the citizenship law as directed by the court.

In 2025, the Canadian government has temporarily halted the acceptance of new applications to sponsor parents and grandparents for permanent residency. The focus this year will be on processing applications submitted in 2024, with a target of 15,000 applications to be processed. However, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can still explore the super visa option, which allows their parents and grandparents to visit Canada for extended periods of up to five years at a time.

What Is the PGP?

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) helps Canadian citizens and permanent residents bring their parents or grandparents to Canada permanently. However, due to high demand, the program uses a lottery system.

To participate, interested sponsors must submit an “interest to sponsor” form. From 2020 to 2024, invitations to apply were issued to those who submitted forms during the 2020 intake period. This lottery system ensures fairness in selecting sponsors, as the number of eligible applicants significantly exceeds the available spots.

Why Is IRCC Pausing This Program?

Canada is significantly reducing immigration targets as a whole for 2025. Initially, the government aimed to welcome 34,000 parents and grandparents in 2025. However, this target has been lowered to 24,500 due to a 20% overall reduction in immigration levels. This change reflects a shift in government priorities and may impact families seeking to reunite with elderly relatives in Canada.

Other Options to Sponsor Your Parent or Grandparent

If you can’t sponsor your parents or grandparents for permanent residency in Canada but want them to stay with you for an extended period, you might be able to sponsor them for a super visa.

This visa allows them to stay in Canada as temporary residents for up to five years at a time. To qualify as a sponsor, you must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian living in Canada, be at least 18 years old, meet income requirements, and agree to financially support your relatives.

Your parents or grandparents must purchase health insurance for their stay and be admissible to Canada. They cannot work, study, or become permanent residents with a super visa.

If they plan to visit for six months or less, they may apply for a regular visitor visa instead.

In 2025, Canada’s immigration landscape will see significant shifts, particularly within the Express Entry system.

Increased Emphasis on Express Entry

Express Entry will play a more crucial role in Canada’s immigration plans this year. The federal government has increased its reliance on Express Entry while reducing overall immigration levels and scaling back Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) allocations. This shift emphasizes federal control and prioritizes skilled workers who can contribute to the Canadian economy.

CRS Points Removal for Job Offers

Starting in the spring of 2025, candidates will no longer receive extra points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) for having a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.

This change could significantly impact the CRS scores of many candidates who were previously awarded points for job offers. Candidates will need to rely more heavily on other factors to increase their CRS scores, such as their language proficiency (English or French) and work experience. The government has not specified how long this change will remain in effect.

Redefining Federal Economic Immigration Pathways

In the past, Canada’s annual immigration plan included a specific allocation for immigrants selected through the Express Entry system, which was categorized under the “Family and Humanitarian Support” (FHS) allocation.

However, starting in 2025, the FHS allocation is being restructured. It will be replaced by two new sub-categories within the overall immigration levels plan: “Federal Economic Priorities” and “In-Canada Focus.”

In-Canada Focus

The landing allocations for this sub-category is set to be 82,890 candidates. Candidates already in Canada, including those in the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Express Entry-aligned Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) will be all be considered under this category.

Federal Economic Priorities

The landing allocations for this sub-category is set to be 41,700 candidates. Candidates selected under category-based selections, who meet Canada’s labour market needs and demographic goals. Priority sectors in 2025 will include healthcare occupations, trade occupations, and candidates with French language proficiency.

This change signifies a crucial shift in how candidates are chosen for permanent residency in Canada.

Shifting Focus in Category-Based Draws

In 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is expected to conduct more Express Entry draws focused on specific categories of candidates, aligning with Canada’s labor market needs.

According to the 2025-2027 Immigration Levels Plan, the government has identified several key priority areas:

Healthcare Occupations: To address healthcare worker shortages.

Trades Occupations: To support the skilled trades sector.

French-Language Proficiency: To increase the number of French-speaking immigrants outside of Quebec.

While draws for healthcare and trades may have been less frequent in 2024, they are likely to increase in 2025. Draws targeting French-speaking candidates will continue to be a significant part of the Express Entry system, as they were in 2024. For 2025, Canada has set a target of 8.5% of total new immigrant admissions to the French proficiency category. This target will rise to 9.5% of admissions for 2026.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced significant updates to the H-1B and H-2 visa programs. These changes, effective January 17, 2025, aim to modernize the visa system by offering more flexibility for employers seeking skilled foreign workers, while also prioritizing worker protections.

What Are the Changes to These Visa Programs?

Increased Flexibility and Streamlined Processing

The new regulations aim to make the H-1B and H-2 visa application process more efficient for both employers and workers. This includes:

Updates to Form I-129: Employers will need to use a revised Form I-129 starting January 17, 2025. While the new form details are not yet available, it’s expected to streamline filing procedures.

Focus on Worker Protections

Worker protections remain a key focus of the revised programs. The new regulations aim to:

Combat Wage Theft: Measures are being implemented to prevent wage theft and ensure that H-1B and H-2 workers are paid fairly.

Improve Working Conditions: The updated regulations emphasize providing safe and fair working conditions for all employees.

These changes are designed to create a more balanced system that benefits both employers and skilled foreign workers.

What This Means for Employers and Workers

Employers seeking to hire foreign talent under the H-1B and H-2 programs will need to familiarize themselves with the new regulations and updated application procedures. Workers currently on these visas, or those seeking them in the future, should also stay informed about the changes to ensure a smooth transition.

2024 was a pivotal year for Canadian immigration, marked by significant policy shifts and visa program adjustments. As Canada continues to position itself as a global destination for skilled workers, students, and families, the immigration landscape has undergone substantial transformation.

Canada Visa Changes in 2024

The past year witnessed several noticeable changes to Canadian visa programs:

Increased Immigration Targets

The Canadian government raised the bar for annual immigration targets, aiming to welcome a record number of newcomers to address labor shortages and demographic challenges.

Streamlined Application Processes

IRCC introduced innovative digital solutions and streamlined application procedures to expedite the processing times for various visa categories.

Economic Immigration Focus

Programs like Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) remained central to Canada’s immigration strategy, attracting skilled workers and entrepreneurs from around the world.

Student Visa Reforms

To attract international students, Canada made adjustments to student visa regulations, offering more flexibility and opportunities for post-graduation work permits.

The government maintained the eligibility criteria for PGWP, allowing international students to gain valuable Canadian work experience after completing their studies.

Express Entry

Increased Intake Targets: IRCC consistently increased the number of invitations issued through Express Entry draws, providing more opportunities for skilled workers to obtain permanent residency.

Program-Specific Draws: IRCC continued to conduct program-specific draws, targeting specific occupations in high demand. This strategy allowed for a more targeted approach to filling labor shortages.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

Expanded Nominee Categories: Many provinces and territories expanded their nomination categories to include more occupations and industries. This opened up new pathways for skilled workers to obtain provincial nominations and, subsequently, permanent residency.

Streamlined Application Processes: Several provinces implemented streamlined application processes, making it easier for applicants to navigate the PNP system.

Canada Policy Changes in 2024

In addition to visa changes, several policy updates shaped the Canadian immigration landscape in 2024:

Focus on Skilled Workers and Entrepreneurs

The Canadian government continued to prioritize the recruitment of highly skilled workers and innovative entrepreneurs to drive economic growth.

Tightened Temporary Resident Programs

International Student Cap: A cap was imposed on the number of new international students, aimed at managing the influx of students and ensuring the quality of education.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Reforms: Eligibility criteria for the PGWP were tightened to align with labor market needs and immigration goals.

Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) Reforms: Restrictions were placed on low-wage TFW programs, while higher wages were mandated for high-wage streams.

Refugee and Humanitarian Programs

Increased Focus on Resettlement: Canada continued to prioritize the resettlement of refugees, particularly those fleeing conflict and persecution.

Streamlined Processing: Efforts were made to streamline the processing of refugee claims and humanitarian applications.

What to Expect for Canadian Immigration in 2025

As we look ahead to 2025, Canadian immigration is poised for further growth and development. Here’s what we can anticipate:

The government is likely to maintain its ambitious immigration targets, aiming to address labor shortages and demographic challenges.

Economic immigration programs will remain a priority, with a focus on attracting highly skilled individuals and innovative entrepreneurs.

PNPs are expected to play an even more significant role in attracting skilled workers to specific regions across Canada.

There may be adjustments to family sponsorship programs to streamline the process and reduce wait times.

Canada may introduce new immigration pathways for individuals with expertise in climate change, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability.

Unchanged Fees: Fees for citizenship, permanent residence, and family sponsorship applications remain the same.

Please double-check that you paid the correct fee before submitting your online application.

Mail-In Applicants

Due to potential mail delays, your application might be affected by the recent fee changes.

In most cases, your application won’t be rejected if: you paid the old fee amount, your application was complete, or you mailed your application before the fee change took effect.

Unchanged Fees

Several major immigration categories have retained their previous fee structure:

Citizenship: Despite calls for fee reductions, there are no changes to the current citizenship fees.

Permanent Residence: Fees for skilled worker programs, Canadian Experience Class, and Provincial Nominee Programs remain unchanged.

Family Sponsorship: Fees for sponsoring family members like spouses, partners, children, and parents are stable.

Study Permits and Temporary Resident Visas: Students and temporary visitors won’t see any increase in application fees.

Work Permits: Fees for both employer-specific and open work permits remain the same.

Refugee and Humanitarian Applications: Fees for refugee claimants have not been increased.

By maintaining these fees, the Canadian government aims to make Canada a more attractive destination for immigrants while easing financial burdens, particularly for vulnerable applicants.
