resemble dull manuals. To make it easier for
you to learn, we threw away the traditional
template used by publishers and redesigned
  this book from scratch.

At work, when people look
at my screen and see it full of
code, it's not unusual to get a
comment about it looking very
complicated or how clever I must
be to understand it. The truth
is, it's not that hard to learn how
to write web pages and read
the code used to create them;
you certainly don't have to be a
    "programmer."

Understanding HTML and CSS
can help anyone who works
with the web; designers can
create more attractive and
usable sites, website editors can
create better content, marketers
can communicate with their
audience more effectively, and
managers can commission
better sites and get the best out
      of their teams.

I've focussed on the code you
need to use 90% of the time
and omitted the code that you
would rarely see even if writing
websites is your full time job. By
the end of the book, if you come
across the other 10% you will be
able to Google it to find out what
        it means quickly and easily.

I have also added practical
information on topics I am
commonly asked about, such as
how to prepare images, audio
and video for the web, how to
approach the design and build
of a new site, how to improve
your rankings in search engines
(SEO), and how to use Google
Analytics to learn about visitors
to your site.

In order to teach you about creating web pages,
this book is divided into three sections:

1: HTML

We will spend the first chapter
looking at how HTML is used to
create web pages. You will see
that you start by writing down
the words you want to appear
on your page. You then add tags
or elements to the words so
that the browser knows what is
a heading, where a paragraph
begins and ends, and so on.
The rest of this section
introduces the tags you have
at your disposal to create web
pages, grouped into chapters on:
text, lists, links, images, tables,
forms, video audio and flash, and
miscellaneous elements.
I should warn you that the
examples in the first nine
chapters are not exciting to look
at, yet they are the foundation of
every web page. The following
chapters on CSS will show you
how to make your pages look a
  lot more interesting.

2: CSS

We start this section with a
chapter that explains how CSS
uses rules to enable you to
control the styling and layout
of web pages. We then go on to
look at the wide variety of CSS
properties you can use in your
CSS rules. These properties
generally fall into one of two
categories:
Presentation: How to control
things like the color of text, the
fonts you want to use and the
size of those fonts, how to add
background colors to pages (or
parts of a page), and how to add
background images.
Layout: How to control where
the different elements are
positioned on the screen. You
will also learn several techniques
that professionals use to make
their pages more attractive.

3: Practical

We end up with some helpful
information that will assist you in
building better websites.
We look at some new tags that
will be introduced in HTML5 to
help describe the structure of
your pages. HTML5 is the latest
version of HTML (still under
development at the time of
writing). Before learning about
these elements, you need a good
grasp of how CSS is used to
control the design of web pages.
There is a chapter that talks you
through a design process that
you might like to follow when
creating a new website.
Finally, we end up looking at
topics that will help you once
you have built your site, such
as putting it on the web, search
engine optimisation (SEO) and
using analytics software to track
who comes to your site and what
  they are looking at.

For those that read the first book, this is
an extension of that book. Below is an overview of all of the new vulnerabilities and attacks that will
be discussed. In addition to the new content, attacks and techniques from the first book, which are still
relevant today, are included to eliminate the need to refer back to the first book. So, what’s new?

Some of the updated attacks from the last year and a half include:

Heartbleed

ShellShock

Kerberos issues (Golden Ticket/Skeleton Key)

PTH Postgres

New Spear Phishing

Better/Cheaper Dropboxes

Faster/Smarter Password Cracking

New WIFI attacks

Tons of PowerShell scripts

Privilege Escalation Attacks

Mass network compromises

Moving laterally smarter

Burp Modules

Printer Exploits

Backdoor Factory

ZAP Proxy

Sticky Keys

NoSQL Injection

Commercial Tools (Cobalt Strike, Canvas, Core Impact)

Lab sections

And so much more

In addition to describing the attacks that have changed in the last couple years, I have attempted to
incorporate all of the comments and recommendations received from readers of the first book into this
second book. A more in-depth look into how to set up a lab environment in which to test your attacks
is also given, along with the newest tips and tricks of penetration testing. Lastly, I tried to make this
version easier to follow since many schools have incorporated my book into their curricula.
Whenever possible, I have added lab sections that help provide a way to test a vulnerability or
exploit.

What’s not different? One of my goals from the first book was to make this as “real world” as
possible. I really tried to stay away from theoretical attacks and focused on what I have seen from
personal experience and what actually worked. The second goal was to strengthen your core
understanding as a penetration tester. In other words, I wanted to encourage you to use different
methods to boost your value to your current or future company or client. Just running a vulnerability
scanner and submitting that as your report provides no real benefit to a company. Also, penetration
tests with an extremely limited scope will give a false sense of security. To THP1 readers, rest
assured that although you may find some familiar information, there is a great deal of new information
in THP2, which has double the content compared to its predecessor. Additionally, by popular
demand, I have created a slew of scripts and tools to help you in your hacking adventure. This was
probably one of the top requests by readers, so I have included a ton of scripts located in my Github
(https://github.com/cheetz) and tried to make it easier to follow.

For those who did not read the first book, you might be wondering what experience I have as a
penetration tester. My background comes from eight years of penetration testing for major financial
institutions, large utility companies, Fortune 500 entertainment companies, and government
organizations. I have also spent years teaching offensive network security, spoken at
Toorcon/Derbycon/BayThreat, been referenced in many security publications, and currently run a
security community of over 300 members in Southern California. My hope is that you will be able to
take what I have learned and incorporate it into your own security lifestyle.
From a technical standpoint, many tools and attacks have changed in the past couple years. With
attacks like pass-the-hash, and with Group Policy Preferences getting patched, the process and
methods of attackers have changed.

One important note is that I am using both commercial tools and open source. For every commercial
tool, I try to give an open source counterpart. I occasionally run into some pentesters that say they
only use open source tools. As a penetration tester, I find this a hard statement to take. If you are
supposed to emulate a “real world” attack, the “bad guys” do not have these restrictions, then you
need to use any tool that works to get the job done.

Who is this book intended for? You need to have some experience with Microsoft Active Directory, a
solid understanding of Linux, some networking background, some coding experience (Bash, Python,
Perl, Ruby, PHP, C, or anything along that line), and using security tools like vulnerability scanners
and exploit tools (i.e. Metasploit). If you don’t have the background, but are interested in getting into
security, I would suggest making sure you have the basics down. You can’t just jump into security
without the basic knowledge of how things work first.

This book is not just for those looking to get into or who currently are in the offensive fields. This
book provides valuable information and insight for incident responders as well, as they need to know
how attackers think and what methods they use.

Lastly, I want to discuss a bit about the difference between researchers and penetration testers. Many
times, these two professions blend together, as both need to be knowledgeable in both areas.

However, in this book, I separate the two areas slightly and focus on penetration testing. To clarify, in
this book, a researcher is one who focuses on a single or limited scope and spends more time
reversing the application/protocol/OS. Their goal is to discover an unknown exploit for that
particular vulnerability. On the other hand (and remember this is a generalization), a penetration
tester takes what is already known to compromise systems and applications. There will always be
some overlap–a pentester will still fuzz vulnerabilities (for example, web parameters) and find zerodays–but he/she might not spend as much time finding all the issues as a researcher might.

Below is an
overview of all the new vulnerabilities and attacks that will be discussed. In
addition to the new content, some attacks and techniques from the prior books
(which are still relevant today) are included to eliminate the need to refer back to
the prior books. So, what's new? Some of the updated topics from the past
couple of years include:

Abusing Active Directory

Abusing Kerberos

Advanced Web Attacks

Better Ways to Move Laterally

Cloud Vulnerabilities

Faster/Smarter Password Cracking

Living Off the Land

Lateral Movement Attacks

Multiple Custom Labs

Newer Web Language Vulnerabilities

Physical Attacks

Privilege Escalation

PowerShell Attacks

Ransomware Attacks

Red Team vs Penetration Testing

Setting Up Your Red Team Infrastructure

Usable Red Team Metrics

Writing Malware and Evading AV

And so much more

Additionally, I have attempted to incorporate all of the comments and
recommendations received from readers of the first and second books. I do want
to reiterate that I am not a professional author. I just love security and love
teaching security and this is one of my passion projects. I hope you enjoy it.
This book will also provide a more in-depth look into how to set up a lab
environment in which to test your attacks, along with the newest tips and tricks
of penetration testing. Lastly, I tried to make this version easier to follow since
many schools have incorporated my book into their curricula. Whenever
possible, I have added lab sections that help provide a way to test a vulnerability
or exploit.

As with the other two books, I try to keep things as realistic, or “real world”, as
possible. I also try to stay away from theoretical attacks and focus on what I
have seen from personal experience and what actually worked. I think there has
been a major shift in the industry from penetration testers to Red Teamers, and I
want to show you rather than tell you why this is so. As I stated before, my
passion is to teach and challenge others. So, my goals for you through this book
are two-fold: first, I want you to get into the mindset of an attacker and
understand “the how” of the attacks; second, I want you to take the tools and
techniques you learn and expand upon them. Reading and repeating the labs is
only one part – the main lesson I teach to my students is to let your work speak
for your talents. Instead of working on your resume (of course, you should have
a resume), I really feel that having a strong public Github repo/technical blog
speaks volumes in security over a good resume. Whether you live in the blue
defensive or red offensive world, getting involved and sharing with our security
community is imperative.

For those who did not read either of my two prior books, you might be
wondering what my experience entails. My background includes more than 12
years of penetration testing/red teaming for major financial institutions, large
utility companies, Fortune 500 entertainment companies, and government
organizations. I have also spent years teaching offensive network security at
colleges, spoken at multiple security conferences, been referenced in many
security publications, taught courses all over the country, ran multiple public
CTF competitions, and started my own security school. One of my big passion
project was building a free and open security community in Southern California
called LETHAL (meetup.com/lethal). Now, with over 800+ members, monthly
meetings, CTF competitions, and more, it has become an amazing environment
for people to share, learn, and grow.

One important note is that I am using both commercial and open source tools.
For every commercial tool discussed, I try to provide an open source
counterpart. I occasionally run into some pentesters who claim they only use
open source tools. As a penetration tester, I find this statement hard to accept. If
you are supposed to emulate a “real world” attack, the “bad guys” do not have
these restrictions; therefore, you need to use any tool (commercial or open
source) that will get the job done.

A question I get often is, who is this book intended for? It is really hard to state
for whom this book is specifically intended as I truly believe anyone in security
can learn. Parts of this book might be too advanced for novice readers, some
parts might be too easy for advanced hackers, and other parts might not even be
in your field of security.

For those who are just getting into security, one of the most common things I
hear from readers is that they tend to gain the most benefit from the books after
reading them for the second or third time (making sure to leave adequate time
between reads). There is a lot of material thrown at you throughout this book
and sometimes it takes time to absorb it all. So, I would say relax, take a good
read, go through the labs/examples, build your lab, push your scripts/code to a
public Github repository, and start up a blog.

Lastly, being a Red Team member is half about technical ability and half about
having confidence. Many of the social engineering exercises require you to
overcome your nervousness and go outside your comfort zone. David Letterman
said it best, "Pretending to not be afraid is as good as actually not being afraid."
Although this should be taken with a grain of salt, sometimes you just have to
have confidence, do it, and don't look back.

It starts with the behavioral
perspective of the ‘human cognition’ and covers in detail the tools and
techniques required for its intelligent realization on machines. The classical
chapters on search, symbolic logic, planning and machine learning have been
covered in sufficient details, including the latest research in the subject. The
modern aspects of soft computing have been introduced from the first
principles and discussed in a semi-informal manner, so that a beginner of the
subject is able to grasp it with minimal effort. Besides soft computing, the
other leading aspects of current AI research covered in the book include nonmonotonic and spatio-temporal reasoning, knowledge acquisition,
verification, validation and maintenance issues, realization of cognition on
machines and the architecture of AI machines. The book ends with two case
studies: one on ‘criminal investigation’ and the other on ‘navigational
planning of robots,’ where the main emphasis is given on the realization of
intelligent systems using the methodologies covered in the book.

The book is unique for its diversity in contents, clarity and precision of
presentation and the overall completeness of its chapters. It requires no
mathematical prerequisites beyond the high school algebra and elementary
differential calculus; however, a mathematical maturity is required to follow
the logical concepts presented therein. An elementary background of data
structure and a high level programming language like Pascal or C is helpful to
understand the book. The book, thus, though meant for two semester courses
of computer science, will be equally useful to readers of other engineering
disciplines and psychology as well as for its diverse contents, clear
presentation and minimum prerequisite requirements.

In order to make the students aware of the applied side of the subject,
the book includes a few homework problems, selected from a wide range of
topics. The problems supplied, in general, are of three types: i) numerical, ii)
reflexive and iii) provocative. The numerical problems test the students’
understanding of the subject. The reflexive type requires a formulation of the
problem from its statement before finding its solution. The provocative type
includes the well-known problems of modern AI research, the solution to
some of which are known, and some are open ended. With adequate hints
supplied with the problems, the students will be able to solve most of the
numerical and reflexive type problems themselves. The provocative type,
however, requires some guidance from the teacher in charge. The last type of
problems is included in the text to give the research-oriented readers an idea
of the current trend in AI research. Graduate students of AI will also find
these problems useful for their dissertation work.

The book includes a large number of computer simulations to illustrate
the concepts presented in logic programming, fuzzy Petri nets, imaging and
robotics. Most of the simulation programs are coded in C and Pascal, so that
students without any background of PROLOG and LISP may understand them
easily. These programs will enhance the students’ confidence in the subject
and enable them to design the simulation programs, assigned in the exercise as
homework problems. The professionals will find these simulations interesting
as it requires understanding of the end results only, rather than the formal
proofs of the theorems presented in the text.

i) Unified theme of presentation: Most of the existing texts on AI cover a set
of chapters of diverse thoughts, without demonstrating their inter-relationship.
The readers, therefore, are misled with the belief that AI is merely a
collection of intelligent algorithms, which precisely is not correct. The
proposed book is developed from the perspective of cognitive science, which
provides the readers with the view that the psychological model of cognition
can be visualized as a cycle of 5 mental states: sensing, acquisition,
perception, planning and action, and there exists a strong interdependence
between each two sequential states. The significance of search in the state of
perception, reasoning in the state of planning, and learning as an intermediate
process between sensing and action thus makes sense. The unified theme of
the book, therefore, is to realize the behavioral perspective of cognition on an
intelligent machine, so as to enable it act and think like a human being.
Readers will enjoy the book especially for its totality with an ultimate aim to
build intelligent machines.

ii) Comprehensive coverage of the mathematical models: This probably is
the first book that provides a comprehensive coverage of the mathematical
models on AI and Soft Computing. The existing texts on “mathematical
modeling in AI” are beyond the scope of undergraduate students.
Consequently, while taking courses at graduate level, the students face much
difficulty in studying from monographs and journals. The book, however,
bridges the potential gap between the textbooks and advanced monographs in
the subject by presenting the mathematical models from a layman’s
understanding of the problems.

iii) Case studies: This is the only book that demonstrates the realization of
the proposed tools and techniques of AI and Soft Computing through case
studies. The readers, through these case studies, will understand the
significance of the joint usage of the AI and Soft Computing tools and
techniques in interesting problems of the real world. Case studies for two
distinct problems with special emphasis to their realization have been covered
in the book in two separate chapters. The case study I is concerned with a
problem of criminal investigation, where the readers will learn to use the soft
computing tools in facial image matching, fingerprint classification, speaker
identification and incidental description based reasoning. The readers can
build up their own systems by adding new fuzzy production rules and facts
and deleting the unwanted rules and facts from the system. The book thus will
serve the readership from both the academic and the professional world.
Electronic and computer hobbyists will find the case study II on mobile robots
very exciting. The algorithms of navigational planning (in case study II),
though tested with reference to “Nomad Super Scout II robot,” have been
presented in generic form, so that the interested readers can code them for
other wheel-based mobile robots.

iv) Line Diagrams: The book includes around 190 line diagrams to give the
readers a better insight to the subject. Readers will enjoy the book for they
directly get a deeper view of the subject through diagrams with a minimal
    reading of the text.

The book is an outgrowth of the lecture materials prepared by the author for a
one semester course on “Artificial Intelligence,” offered to the graduate
students in the department of Electronics and Telecommunication
Engineering, Jadavpur University, Calcutta. An early version of the text was
also used in a summer-school on “AI and Neural Nets,” offered to the faculty
members of various engineering colleges for their academic development and
training. The training program included theories followed by a laboratory
course, where the attendees developed programs in PROLOG, Pascal and C
with the help of sample programs/toolkit. The toolkit is included in the book
on a CD and the procedure to use it is presented in Appendix A

information security professionals, but for a long time little documentation
existed aside from the source code itself or comments on blogs. That situation
changed significantly when Offensive-Security developed its online course,
Metasploit Unleashed. Shortly after the course went live, No Starch Press
contacted us about the possibly of creating a book to expand on our work with
Metasploit Unleashed.

This book is designed to teach you the ins and outs of Metasploit and how to use
the Framework to its fullest. Our coverage is selective—we won’t cover every
single flag or exploit—but we give you the foundation you’ll need to understand
and use Metasploit now and in future versions.

When we began writing this book, we had in mind a comment by HD Moore,
developer of the Metasploit Framework. In a conversation with HD about the
development of our Metasploit Unleashed course, one of us said to him, “I hope
the course comes out good.” To this offhand comment, HD merely replied,
“Then make sure it is good.” And that’s just what we’ve attempted to do with
this book.

As a group, we are experienced penetration testers who use Metasploit daily to
circumvent security controls, bypass protections, and attack systems
methodically. We wrote this book with the intention of helping our readers
become competent penetration testers. HD’s drive and focus on quality is
apparent within the Metasploit Framework, and we have tried to match those
characteristics in this book. We leave it up to you to judge how well we have
lived up to that standard.

practical procedures to attack and penetrate wireless networks. It was designed by Thomas
d’Otreppe de Bouvette, the author of the Aircrack-NG suite, Mati Aharoni, and Devon
Kearns. Aircrack is by far the single most popular tool in the realm of wireless security
assessment with a large range of capabilities. Together with Offensive Security, a
comprehensive list of attack methodologies and techniques was created, resulting in this
course.

The presentation of this course tends to be quite challenging, as it is very tempting to jump
straight into the practical hacking methods. However, we quickly realized that a proper
introduction of the terms and concepts was required in order to fully benefit from this
course. The first few modules will provide the basic overview of the wireless arena and get
you familiar with the technical environment. In further modules, we’ll discuss and practice
hacking methods and techniques. We can promise you that the first couple of chapters in
the course manual might be a bit boring with lots of definitions, explanations, acronyms,
packet dumps, and diagrams. However, without a thorough understanding of the basics,
true WiFu is not achieved. Please bear with us the first few chapters and do your best not to
skip them. It really is worth it!

In the attacks ahead, we will often be repeating commands, for example, to initialize the
wireless card. This may, at first, seem redundant but is actually by design. This will allow
you to view the various modules later and be able to execute the specific attack without the
need to review the entire course from the beginning.

Infotainment and navigation systems, Wi-Fi, automatic software updates, and other inno-vations aim to make driving more convenient. But vehicle technologies haven’t kept pace with today’s more hostile security environ-ment, leaving millions vulnerable to attack. The Car Hacker’s Handbook will give you a deeper understanding of the computer sys-tems and embedded software in modern vehicles. It begins by examining vulner-abilities and providing detailed explanations of communications over the CAN bus and between devices and systems. Then, once you have an understanding of a vehicle’s communication network, you’ll learn how to intercept data and perform specific hacks to track vehicles, unlock doors, glitch engines, flood communication, and more. With a focus on low-cost, open source hacking tools such as Metasploit, Wireshark, Kayak, can-utils, and ChipWhisperer, The Car Hacker’s Handbook will show you how to:

Build an accurate threat model for your vehicle

Reverse engineer the CAN bus to fake engine signals

Exploit vulnerabilities in diagnostic and data-logging systems

Hack the ECU and other firmware and embedded systems

Feed exploits through infotainment and vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems

Override factory settings with performance-tuning techniques

Build physical and virtual test benches to try out exploits safely

If you’re curious about automotive security and have the urge to hack a two-ton com-puter,make The Car Hacker’s Handbook your first stop.

to document and write a penetration testing report. The ECSA pentest program
takes the tools and techniques you learned in the Certified Ethical Hacker course
(CEH) and elevates your ability into full exploitation by teaching you how to apply
the skills learned in the CEH by utilizing EC-Council’s published penetration testing
methodology

To explain the perspective from which this book was written, it will be helpful to define
the terms machine learning and hackers.

What is machine learning? At the highest level of abstraction, we can think of machine
learning as a set of tools and methods that attempt to infer patterns and extract insight
from a record of the observable world. For example, if we are trying to teach a computer
to recognize the zip codes written on the fronts of envelopes, our data may consist of
photographs of the envelopes along with a record of the zip code that each envelope
was addressed to. That is, within some context we can take a record of the actions of
our subjects, learn from this record, and then create a model of these activities that will
inform our understanding of this context going forward. In practice, this requires data, and in contemporary applications this often means a lot of data (perhaps several tera-
bytes). Most machine learning techniques take the availability of such data as given,
which means new opportunities for their application in light of the quantities of data
that are produced as a product of running modern companies.

What is a hacker? Far from the stylized depictions of nefarious teenagers or Gibsonian
cyber-punks portrayed in pop culture, we believe a hacker is someone who likes to
solve problems and experiment with new technologies. If you’ve ever sat down with
the latest O’Reilly book on a new computer language and knuckled out code until you
were well past “Hello, World,” then you’re a hacker. Or if you’ve dismantled a new
gadget until you understood the entire machinery’s architecture, then we probably
mean you, too. These pursuits are often undertaken for no other reason than to have
gone through the process and gained some knowledge about the how and the why of
an unknown technology.

Along with an innate curiosity for how things work and a desire to build, a computer
hacker (as opposed to a car hacker, life hacker, food hacker, etc.) has experience with
software design and development. This is someone who has written programs before,
likely in many different languages. To a hacker, Unix is not a four-letter word, and
command-line navigation and bash operations may come as naturally as working with
GUIs. Using regular expressions and tools such as sed, awk, and grep are a hacker’s first
vii line of defense when dealing with text. In the chapters contained in this book, we will
assume a relatively high level of this sort of knowledge.

var _author = 'Drew Conway and John Myles White';

This book’s history has been a long
and varied one. Along the way, numerous individuals have contributed
their time, focus, energy, technical acumen, or moral support to seeing The
Hacker’s Handbook through to its conclusion.

tireless support of this book, in spite of its long (and somewhat
nefarious) history.

Our contributing authors — Felix Lindner, Jim Barrett, Scott Brown,
and John Zuena — for taking the time and care to write several
excellent chapters on the hacking community, malware, directory
services, and network hardware that contain some truly unique and
interesting material.

Our technical reviewers, including Jim Tiller, Anton Chuvakin, Sean
Cemm, Ben Rothke, and Ted Shagory, for their insights and for
dedicating their time and energy to helping to shape a better book.

We are confident that this review process will continue as this text
goes to publication, and want — in advance — to thank our readers
and reviewers for their attention to the ongoing quality of this book.

In addition, Dave Aitel would like to thank Justine Bone for her support
and encouragement and Susan Young would like to thank the following individuals: the Darklord (Thomas McGinn) for keeping his personal commitment to support the effort that went into this book in spite of many months
of spent deadlines, missed weekends, and fatigue (thanks, T2B); Trevor
Young, for lending his genuine talent, enthusiasm, time, and care to crafting
the illustrations throughout this book; Gemma Young, and her parents,
Sylvia and Neil, for their interest, support, and advice through two years of
long distance phone calls; and International Network Services (and particularly Steven Marandola, Bob Breingan, and Shaun Meaney) for making available time and support for the completion of this book.

Congratulations on starting your journey to CISSP® certification.
Earning your CISSP is an exciting and rewarding milestone in your
cybersecurity career. Not only does it demonstrate your ability
to develop and manage nearly all aspects of an organization’s
cybersecurity operations, but you also signal to employers your
commitment to life-long learning and taking an active role in
fulfilling the (ISC)² vision of inspiring a safe and secure cyber world.
The material in this study guide is based upon the (ISC)² CISSP Common Body of
Knowledge. It will help you prepare for the exam that will assess your competency in the
following eight domains:

Security and Risk Management

Asset Security

Security Architecture and Engineering

Communication and Network Security

Identity and Access Management (IAM)

Security Assessment and Testing

Security Operations

Software Development Security

While this study guide will help you prepare, passing the CISSP exam depends on your
mastery of the domains combined with your ability to apply those concepts using your
real-world experience.

I wish you the best of luck as you continue on your path to become a CISSP and certified
member of (ISC)².

Sincerely,

David Shearer, CISSP
