The Bridge Center has made significant strides in addressing this rising need, but there is still an urgent need for greater community education on the importance of crisis stabilization—how it works, when it's needed, and how to access care in times of behavioral health emergencies.

“Mental health or substance use crises take many forms and impact anyone, regardless of their age, background, or situation. Such experiences may lead individuals to feel powerless, unable to care for themselves, or even at risk of harm,” says Executive Director Charlotte Claiborne. "This is why we not only offer vital services but also strive to educate the public on recognizing when and how to seek crisis care.”

Since its opening in February 2021, The Bridge Center has become a vital community resource, operating 24/7 to ensure immediate access to professional care for individuals in crisis.

“Anyone over the age of 18 can access our facility any time, day or night. We have two entry points—one for the general public through the lobby and another for law enforcement and first responders, who can bring individuals in crisis here instead of the parish prison or an overcrowded emergency room,” says Claiborne. “With an average response time of under five minutes, we provide immediate support to allow first responders to return to their duties quickly and safely. In many ways, the Bridge Center provides similar services as those found in an emergency room for mental health or substance use crises without being classified as a hospital.”

In the past four years, The Bridge Center has greatly expanded its outreach, collaborating with community organizations, first responders, and local leaders to raise awareness about crisis care. These efforts have helped break down barriers to treatment and ensure people know where to turn when they or a loved one need help.

To date, the Bridge Center has served over 11,000 individuals in crisis, providing the essential care and support needed to restore stability and hope. Its services include crisis observation, short-term psychiatric care, medication-assisted treatment, withdrawal management, and detoxification.

“Our mission goes beyond providing immediate crisis care—we aim to educate, advocate, and create lasting pathways to treatment for individuals in need,” says Claiborne. “The more our community understands crisis stabilization and the available resources, the better equipped we are to support those in need and prevent crises before they escalate.”

The Bridge Center for Hope facility is located at 3455 Florida Street. For more information, call 225-256-6604 or visit https://brbridge.org.

Permalink| Comments

With over 500 people at the conference, partner Chad Dudley said it is amazing to see the participation grow over the years.

“There's so many amazing nonprofits. How do we help them all? And this was a way that we came up with, like, alright, let's get them all in a room and see if we can make them all better and just build relationships with them, and through word of mouth, much like our law firm, it just grew. People had a great experience with it, they started telling other people and we saw new faces show up. And it's just been taken off. We started off with about eight people sitting around a conference room table and we'll have close to 500 people here today,” Dudley said.

For more information on the next Leadership Academy, visit www.dudleydebosier.com or visit their Facebook page.

Permalink| Comments

Her study, entitled “Neural Characterization of the Gut-Brain Axis to Altered Nutrient Delivery,” is developed in collaboration with Pennington Biomedical researchers, with Dr. Albaugh as primary mentor and Drs. Philip Schauer, Christopher Morrison, and Heike Münzberg as co-mentors.

“This award is not only an honor, but an opportunity to continue my research in the growing field of gut-brain communication,” said Dr. Corpodean. “I am humbled by this recognition, and I am confident that it will serve as a catalyst for further study and new knowledge in the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery. A debt of gratitude is owed to my mentors, Dr. Albaugh and Dr. Schauer, who have guided me through this research and along my career path; I look forward to continuing to work with them over the next two years thanks in part to this award.”

“We congratulate Dr. Corpodean on this prestigious honor and look forward to reading more about her research once it’s completed,” said Dr. John Kirwan, Executive Director at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. “Mentoring young researchers plays such a key role in what we do at Pennington Biomedical, and Dr. Corpodean has some of the best mentors in the world in Dr. Vance Albaugh, Dr. Chris Morrison and Dr. Heike Münzberg.”

Dr. Corpodean earned her Doctor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and she is a 2016 graduate of Knox College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience.

“I am exceedingly proud of Flori for receiving this highly coveted award,” said Dr. Albaugh, Assistant Professor of Metabolic Surgery in Pennington Biomedical’s Metabolic Surgery Lab. “As a mentor, the best part of this job is seeing the success of your trainees and watching them go forward in their careers. It is an honor to champion Flori and her hard work, and I look forward to continued collaboration in the TIGER lab.”

The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract is primarily focused on advancing the science and practice of gastrointestinal surgery. There are few awards given to trainees in the surgical field annually, with the Resident Research Award among the most competitive and sought-after.

Dr. Kirwan added, “This recognition is also a testament to the unique partnership set forth by the Governor’s Office and Louisiana Economic Development to bring together Pennington Biomedical, Our Lady of the Lake, and LSU Health New Orleans in establishing the Metamor Institute. Awards like Dr. Corpodean will become more commonplace thanks to the foresight to build partnerships here in Baton Rouge that focus on advanced treatment of obesity and diabetes.”

Permalink| Comments

Since the storm, the blazing Louisiana sun has caused further damage.

In the parish, there are 22 historic marker sites. At least 10 of them will be refurbished by the end of the project.

Ponchatoula artist Ariane Trammel was commissioned by the Livingston Parish Tourism Center to help restore the markers.

"They knew that these monuments were in dire need of restoration so they asked me if I would be interested in the project and it was an honor that they did," Trammel said.

The restoration process includes wire brushing the markers, cleaning them twice with a de-greaser, rinsing and re-painting.

Trammel is only asking for a small fee for her work and time because of the rich history and culture that this job works towards.

"I think at the root of everything I do in my career is using the gifts God gave me and doing good things with my talents," Trammel said.

Each marker costs $400 to $500 and is funded through occupancy tax money.

So far, both the French and Hungarian Settlement markers are complete.

For a full list of historical markers in the parish, click here.

Permalink| Comments

The playground was made possible through efforts by Conrad's family and the Central City Autism Awareness Program.

This project took almost ten years in planning and a nearly $750,000 grant sponsored by State Senator Mack "Bodi" White in the 2023 legislative session.

"His legacy is living on. The long-term risks associated with childhood obesity include Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Today about 1-in-5 children in the U.S. struggle with obesity. Despite ongoing efforts, childhood obesity rates continue to increase over the last decade.

The prevalence of childhood obesity is higher among children who are underrepresented minorities and those who live in rural areas due to health disparities and limited access to interventions.

Across the U.S., about 22 percent of Hispanic or Latin American and 20 percent of African American children have obesity compared to about 14 percent of white children. Additionally, obesity affects about 22 percent of children who live in rural areas.

“With Louisiana ranking near the top on lists for both children and adults living with obesity, this is an important study for families in our state to be involved in,” Staiano said. “We are gaining momentum in helping with the obesity crisis with programs like the upcoming Greaux Healthy initiative and this new grant that will help expand access to evidence-based obesity treatments to families throughout Louisiana.”

“We know that one-size fits all approaches to treating childhood obesity don’t work. This trial is an opportunity to understand what works best and for whom,” said Heerman, associate professor of Pediatrics and a general pediatrician at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

The research team and scientific advisory board includes researchers from Vanderbilt and Pennington Biomedical, representatives from the American Academy of Pediatrics, multiple international experts in childhood obesity interventions, and patient representatives.

The grant is awarded by PCORI, which is an independent, nonprofit organization authorized by Congress with a mission to fund patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research that provides patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information they need to make better informed health and health care decisions.

For more information, see www.pbrc.edu.

Permalink| Comments

Later that day, she was diagnosed with cancer.

“I remember riding home that afternoon after leaving the doctor’s office and I was waiting for that call," Ward said. "I finally got the call from my doctor and she said 'Are you sitting down?' I say, 'Well, no I’m riding.' And she gave me the news and I kind of freaked out."

Ward says paying attention to her body and being proactive once she discovered the lump may have saved her life.

“I was like in the first segment of the diagnosis, which was a blessing in disguise because they were able to catch it just as it started to grow," she said. "Sometimes we just really have to stop and listen to our bodies and they will tell us what’s going on."

She also credits her children for being caring and loving while supporting their mom throughout her battle with breast cancer.

“I think that’s my reason for survival, my children," she said. "They were my support, even though the three younger ones did not quite understand. They knew that there was something I had to endure to get through to be healthy again.”

She says her own confidence rounded out her support team and made it a point to look her best even when she didn’t feel like her normal self.

“Every time I went to an appointment, my doctor would always tell me, 'You don’t look like somebody that’s battling cancer,'" she said. "I guess it amazed him so much that he put me into a fashion show, so I was really excited about that.”

Not only did Ward get to serve her looks on the runway, but it also gave her a chance to connect with other survivors while she was still battling cancer.

“It gave me more confidence, it gave me some morale to look forward to how it’s going to be when I do beat this thing, and so I corralled around these women and I just made them my second family," she said.

Ward says her journey with cancer has helped her appreciate all of life’s gifts that were often overlooked as ordinary tasks.

“Those things that I did not value, that I took for granted, I no longer take for granted," she said. "Waking up every morning healthy, being able to get a drink of water on my own, being able to go about my daily tasks, my activities and not having to have the assistance of someone doing those things for me.”

Fourteen years ago Ward was surprised when she received her diagnosis, and now she is happy, healthy, and living her best life as a breast cancer survivor.

“My name is Shaun Lacy Ward, I am a mother, I’m an aunt, I’m a sister, I’m a grandmother and I am a survivor.”

Permalink| Comments

Though she finds comfort in time spent with her mother and younger sister, she sees hope and a future with Murdo (Will Fletcher), an intelligent, curious poet. The two fall in love as World War I looms, and Murdo is soon conscripted to join the other men of the village to fight. As a gesture of farewell, the village hosts a road dance, a celebration attended by every resident, but this sense of community is soon shattered by an unspeakable incident that changes Kirsty’s life forever. Sensitively adapted from John MacKay’s 2002 novel, this sweeping tale of adversity and resilience captures the attitudes of the time while offering a moving melodrama for audiences of any time period."

Adams, an alumni of Catholic High school, resides in Baton Rouge and is currently involved in the development of several feature film projects.

As writer/director, his 2016 feature ‘Of Mind and Music’ featuring Oscar Nominees Aunjanue Ellis, and Ruth Negga with Joaquim De Almeida was released to critical acclaim, winning many juried/audience awards.
