BATON ROUGE — Southern head coach Marshall Faulk saw plenty to clean up following the Jaguars' 24-21 loss to Texas Southern, but also noted signs of growth from his team.

The Jaguars fell to 3-5 after Saturday's road loss, but battled back from a two-score deficit to give themselves a chance late, something Faulk believes his team may not have done earlier in the season.

"The bright spot in this one was that a month ago, the same team that we put out there would not have fought back down 14 points and gotten ourselves back into the game," Faulk said. "Those are the kind of games that you learn how to win, and sometimes you got to go through the hard to figure out how to do it."

Faulk also pointed to self-inflicted problems that hurt Southern, including a blocked field goal and a kickoff out of bounds.

"It's hard enough to compete against an opponent," Faulk said. "But when you're competing against yourselves, you can't put yourself in those kinds of situations."

The Jaguars will look to put those lessons to use when they hit the road again Saturday for a Halloween matchup against Florida A&M.

"They're an explosive offense," Faulk said. "They play hard, and they'll be prepared for us. They understand what we bring to the table as we do them, and it should be a pretty explosive game."

Southern and Florida A&M will kick off Saturday at 2 p.m. in Tallahassee. The game will air on HBCU GO TV.

DENHAM SPRINGS — Craig Tullier's garage is an interesting place to be. It's filled to the brim with arm wrestling tables, where Craig and his students can hone their craft.

17-year-old Eli Courtney is one of them.

After being invited to Craig's by a friend at church, Eli started showing up to train regularly. As it turned out, he had a knack for this sort of thing.

"Whenever I first met him, I noticed the length of his arm and his hand," said Tullier. "I was like, you got the right tools to actually do this."

Tullier's assessment was dead on. Eli's reigned as the Teen Louisiana State Arm Wrestling Champion for the past three years. The success here in Louisiana led the young competitor to believe that he could take his talents to the national stage.

"My goal was to become the teen state champion for the under-18s before I turned 18," said Eli. "After I achieved that goal, that's when I realized, look, this is something that I really want to do, this is something that brings me genuine happiness."

That led to Eli competing at the National Arm Wrestling Championships in Ohio. He placed second on both his right and left arm.

But Eli's had an extremely valuable member of his team to help him make all of this possible: his mother, Kari Courtney. The two have spent the last few years driving all across the country for arm wrestling tournaments.

"We'd be driving anywhere from four and twelve hours to whatever tournament that I told her, 'Mom, I want to go to this," said Eli. "And she was like, 'I'll make it happen.' And for that I will always be grateful."

As for Kari, she knew from the get-go that arm wrestling was what her son was meant to do.

"The first competition was when I realized, wow, he's really great at this," said Kari. "This is something that he is good at, that he can inspire others at, he's an inspiration to me."

The biggest trip Eli and Kari took together came back in September of this year. Eli competed in Tokyo, Japan for the World Armwrestling Championships. He placed third in his weight class. A massive accomplishment for the young arm wrestler, but he didn't even decide to try for Tokyo until he competed in Ohio at nationals.

"I had no plans of coming to worlds this year until I went to Nationals," said Eli. "So that motivation led to to believe: If I can compete at nationals, then I can compete at worlds, I'll go to worlds next year and I'll place better. So, I think the snowball effect of that made me realize, look, I can just keep going."

BAKER - Baker High football is off to its best start in 20 years. First-year head coach Demetric Rogers has set up his 7-1 Buffaloes for a District 6-3A title game, but things did not start off great.

 

Baker only won three games in 2025, and Rogers took over the program that he says was “neglected.” 

 

“I didn't feel they were loved the way they should've been loved, thought of the way they should've been thought of,” Rogers said. 

 

It didn’t take long for a new staff to turn things around, and it started off the field. 

 

“When Coach Rogers first got here, I automatically trusted him. I just felt it, and it shows,” Senior quarterback Steve Claiborne said. 

 

While the team continued to build in the offseason, their hardwork didn’t come without some adversity. 

 

During summer workouts in June, two shootings in three days occurred right near the football stadium while the team was near. 

 

“It was sad in my opinion because we're outside working out and next thing you know, we're running for our lives,” Claiborne said. 

 

To protect the athletes and coaching staff, Rogers started to hold practices at different locations for the rest of the summer workouts. He says only he and the bus driver knew of the location to ensure safety. 

 

While trying to overcome the fear they experienced, the Buffaloes became closer than ever. 

 

“You have to depend on your brother now because now, everybody fearing for their life. We gotta make sure everybody is together. We have been pushed to our last limit. We have been pushed to the point where we didn't know if we were going to be able to play this season. I think it has made us a stronger team, which has propelled us to this great start that we've had this year,” Rogers said. 

 

Now, the Buffaloes are already exceeding expectations. Their first goal heading into the 2026 season was to get to 6 wins. Now that they have surpassed that, their ceiling is as high as they want it to be. 

 

“We all got one goal, and that's a state championship, and that's how we've been playing for these past seven games,” Claiborne said. 

 

The Buffaloes aren’t just a good team, they are dominating their opponents. Baker is averaging close to 40 points per game while often beating their opponents by more than 20 points.

 

“For 48 minutes, we play smashmouth football. Discipline, effort, pride and toughness is something that we live off of. Six seconds, like I say, six seconds of hell. Just trying to pin our ears back for six seconds and win those plays,” Rogers said. 

 

Heading into the final two weeks of the regular season, the Buffaloes are preparing for a District 6-3A championship game against Istrouma on Friday.

BATON ROUGE - Two LSU players earned SEC weekly honors following the Tigers' 38-17 win over Auburn on Saturday.

Quarterback Sam Leavitt earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors, while edge rusher Jordan Ross earned SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors. It marks the second time this season each player has received the award.

Leavitt accounted for 432 total yards and four touchdowns in the victory, completing 32-of-45 passes for a career-high 378 yards and three scores. He also rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Ross helped lead an LSU defense that recorded seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss. He finished with four tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks as the Tigers held Auburn to a season-low 270 total yards.

LSU has a bye this weekend before hosting Alabama on Nov. 7.

BATON ROUGE - LSU football is enjoying the open date this weekend for Halloween, but when the Tigers return to action on Saturday, November 7 against Alabama it will be at 2:30 p.m. in Tiger Stadium and will be broadcast right here on WBRZ.

This will be a departure for the Tigers and Tide contest as this will be the first day game since 2019 in Tuscaloosa when Joe Burrow and company beat Alabama 46-41.

LSU has four more games left in the 2026 season and two of them are still undecided for kickoff times.  Home against Texas on November 11 and on the road at Tennessee are still "flex" times meaning they could be afternoon games or evening games.

LSU is currently 6-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play and ranked 15th in the latest AP Poll.

Both LSU and Alabama enter the matchup with identical 6-2 overall records. The Tigers are 3-2 in SEC play, while the Crimson Tide are 4-2 in conference action.

LSU is coming off a 38-17 road victory over Auburn on Saturday. The Tigers' offense delivered one of its best performances of the season, scoring 31 points in the first half on its way to the 21-point win.

LSU has a bye this weekend before returning to Death Valley for the showdown with Alabama.

BATON ROUGE - Both teams had plenty of chances, but neither the LSU Tigers nor the Mississippi State Bulldogs could get a goal in a 0-0 draw. LSU's final home game of the regular season ended with a single point instead of three.

LSU leading goal scorer Ava Galligan led the Tigers in shots with five on the afternoon, with one of them counting as a shot on goal. 

Despite only picking up one point, the day ends with LSU sitting in a playoff spot. With one game left to play on their schedule, the Tigers are in 12th place in the SEC standings and would be the last team to get into the SEC tournament as the 12-seed.

LSU has nine points in SEC play, two more than 13th-place Missouri with seven points. LSU will face Mizzou in the regular season finale.

ATLANTA — Former LSU Tiger Angel Reese was named to the 2026 All-WNBA Second Team on Saturday.

Reese, along with Rhyne Howard of the Atlanta Dream, are the first duo in the team's history to earn both All-WNBA and All-Defensive honors in the same season. 

The duo previously helped push Atlanta to a 2-1 lead over the Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA Finals. 

Reese also earned the 2026 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and became the first player in league history to record 500 rebounds in a single season, finishing the season with 32 double-doubles, surpassing the previous league record of 28.

HOUSTON, Texas - The Southern Jaguars lost in heartbreaking fashion as Texas Southern freshman kicker Miguel Arana nailed a game-winning 46-yard field goal as time expired to give TSU the 24-21 win, handing the Jags their third conference loss of the season and their fifth loss overall.

The Jags struck first on a Christian Johnson pass to Damien Henderson to go ahead 7-0 in the first quarter, but the Tigers responded with a 14-point second quarter with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Jacob Washington scored the first to tie the game at seven apiece, and after a Southern three-and-out, Athean Renfro ran in a 15-yard touchdown to take the lead at 14-7.

Southern clawed their way back from a 14-point deficit in the second half. Running back Trey Holly ran in an 11-yard touchdown to tie the game at 21 with less than five minutes to go, but the TSU offense responded with a 10-play drive, draining the remainder of the clock and setting up Arana for the game-winning kick.

Jags head coach Marshall Faulk attempted to ice Arana with his final timeout, but Arana ended up nailing the kick anyway.

Despite the loss, Holly had a very big day on the ground. With the passing game limited to just 18 attempts on the afternoon, Holly racked up 35 total carries for 156 yards and a touchdown. Mike Franklin chipped in with seven carries and 44 yards.

Southern heads on the road again next week to take on Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla., in a matchup on Halloween.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - LSU men's basketball had a few more bodies on the roster at its disposal compared to the Tigers' first two exhibitions, with Skyy Clark, Brice Dessert, and Saliou Niang all available for the first time, but Will Wade's bunch took a close 89-87 loss to Florida State to close out its preseason slate.

LSU had an inbound play with a shot to tie or win the game, but Donovan Dent committed a turnover on the inbound pass, and the Seminoles were able to seal the win.

Dent led the Tigers in points with 24 and also led the team in assists with nine. 

In their first action in LSU uniforms, Clark, Dessert and Niang combined for 30 points, with Clark scoring 21.

The Tigers finish their exhibition slate 2-1 and now move on to regular season basketball. LSU faces LSU New Orleans on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Maravich Center.

AUBURN, Ala. - It's a Tiger versus Tiger matchup at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday morning as LSU takes on Auburn.

Auburn's opening drive ended in a three-and-out as LSU defensive end Princewill Umanmielen recorded his ninth sack of the season, bringing down Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown on third down.

The LSU offense drove into the red zone on its opening possession but had to settle for a 30-yard field goal from placekicker Scott Starzyk to give LSU an early 3-0 lead.

Auburn made its own trip to the red zone on the ensuing possession, but LSU's defense held the Tigers to a 23-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3 midway through the first quarter.

LSU answered right back on its ensuing possession, quickly moving the ball down the field on an eight-play, 65-yard drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Sam Leavitt to Jackson Harris to give LSU a 10-3 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Tight end Trey'Dez Green made his presence known in his return from injury, helping LSU convert a gutsy fourth-down attempt from its own 31-yard line with an 11-yard catch and run on a trick play. Later on the same drive, the star tight end hauled in a 15-yard touchdown reception to extend LSU's lead to 17-3 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

Brown broke loose on third-and-long, picking up 34 yards before being knocked out of bounds at the LSU 1-yard line. On the ensuing play, Brown finished the drive with his legs, rushing for a touchdown to cut LSU's lead to 17-10 with just under six minutes left in the half.

LSU responded almost immediately as Leavitt connected with Harris once again, this time for a 70-yard touchdown to extend the Tigers' lead to 24-10 with just under four and a half minutes remaining in the first half.

LSU extended its lead heading into halftime as the Tigers capped a 10-play, 74-yard drive with a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Leavitt to take a 31-10 lead.

After a quiet third quarter for both teams, LSU extended its lead to 38-10 on a 12-yard rushing touchdown from running back Dilin Jones with roughly 14 minutes remaining in the game.

Auburn responded with quarterback Tristan Ti'a running it in for a final touchdown, bringing the final score to 38-17.

LSU has a bye next weekend before returning to Death Valley to host Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 7.

BATON ROUGE - In what was a very big statistical night for the five-star QB, Dunham's Elijah Haven put up six total touchdowns, but he also threw his 146th career passing touchdown to become Louisiana's all-time leader in passing touchdowns. The Tigers ended up beating Episcopal 55-6.

The Tigers led the Knights 28-6 at halftime, and Dunham didn't skip a beat as the second half got started.

It was the Tiger defense making the big play at the start of the half. Episcopal dragged out the trick play to start the third quarter, but Dunham defensive back Morgan River forced the fumble, and Dunham took over from there.

On the ensuing drive, Haven, already with three touchdowns in the game at this point, found Jarone Harris for touchdown No. 4 on the evening and touchdown No. 146 in his career. Haven moved past Evangel's Brock Berlin to become Louisiana's all-time high school leader.

Dunham moves to 3-0 in district play with two games remaining on their schedule. Next week, the Tigers head out on the road to take on Slaughter.

With the loss, Episcopal drops to 2-1 in district play. The Knights play Springfield next week.

BATON ROUGE — Former LSU basketball head coach Dale Brown has died at the age of 90, WBRZ learned Friday.

Brown coached the Tigers' men's basketball team from 1972 to 1997, coaching Shaquille O'Neal and leading the Tigers to two NCAA Final Four appearances in 1981 and 1986.

Brown's career spanned 448 victories, making him the winningest coach in LSU men's basketball history, a record that has yet to be broken. The Minot, North Dakota, native was also named SEC Coach of the Year in 1973, 1979, 1981 and 1989, as well as being named National Coach of the Year in 1981.

Brown suffered a stroke in April 2003, but returned to work less than a month later after what he called a “miracle” recovery.

Earlier this week, Brown was named the 2027 recipient of the Los Angeles Athletic Club John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. Brown was set to receive the award in April. 

"I can remember the first time I met Dale Brown. It was in a gym in the mountains of West Germany, and I told Dale Brown I was only 13 years old. And the way he hugged and grabbed me was like he found the biggest piece of gold nugget in a mountain," O'Neal said in a video presenting Brown with the Wooden Award. "Daddy Dale, we call you daddy for a reason. I love you."

WATCH LIVE: 

BATON ROUGE — The LSU-Auburn rivalry—The Tiger Bowl—dates back to 1901, when Auburn won the first meeting played in Baton Rouge. 

Now, more than a century later, LSU is heading to Auburn for the Tiger vs. Tiger matchup. Currently, LSU leads the series with a record of  33–24–1.

Some of the highlights of the decades the teams have sparred include 1994's "Interception Game," when LSU quarterback Jamie Howard threw five interceptions, leading to Auburn's 30-25 victory.

But one year later, it was LSU's "Bring Back the Magic Game," where the Bayou Bengals wore white jerseys at home for the first time in 15 years. This game ended when LSU intercepted an Auburn pass in the end zone, preserving a 12-6 lead for the win.

The most famous Tiger vs. Tiger game came years earlier in 1988. On Oct. 8, there was 1:47 left on the clock in Death Valley when LSU had the ball on the Auburn 11-yard line on fourth down. The score was 0-6, Auburn leading, when LSU drove the ball into the end zone. 

The result was a crowd eruption that registered as an earthquake on the seismograph at LSU's Howe-Russell Geoscience Complex about 1,000 feet from Tiger Stadium. 

"It's always been loud in Tiger Stadium," 1988 LSU quarterback Tommy Hodson recalled. "I'm glad that professor left the machine on, so we became part of history."

LSU plays Auburn for the 59th time on Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast on WBRZ.

BATON ROUGE - In the team's first time out back at the Maravich Center for the 2026-27 season, No. 9 LSU women's basketball handled UNT-Dallas handily in a 159-31 win.

All in all, the Tigers had the Trailblazers completely and totally outmatched, as was expected. Seven different LSU players scored in double figures, with Milaysia Fulwiley leading the team with 32.

With such a noncompetitive-looking final score, it's easy to wonder what LSU gets out of a game like this, but Tigers head coach Kim Mulkey says it has its purpose.

"What you do is you just allow your team to be seen by the fans," said Mulkey. "You allow your team to be under the lights for the first time, like a practice, get up and down the floor, get some conditioning in, and probably do more for the opposing team than we do for ourselves just to contribute to the overall growth of women's basketball."

Two notable absences on the court were Russian freshman Anna Minaeva, who, according to coach Mulkey, was dealing with a quad injury, and Spanish senior Noa Morra, who underwent foot surgery back in September.

LSU has one more exhibition on the schedule before opening the regular season. The Tigers face Loyola in the preseason tilt on Thursday, Oct. 29.

BATON ROUGE — LSU players spent the afternoon serving fans at the original Raising Cane's location off Highland Road before the team heads to face Auburn this weekend.

Quarterback Sam Leavitt, wide receivers Winnie Watkins Jr. and Jackson Harris, and offensive tackle Jordan Seaton worked the drive thru and front counter. The players say they wanted to give back to the fanbase and thank fans for their support.

"Yeah, I would say it's a blessing, you know, just to have the opportunity to even be a part of a situation like this, or just knowing a guy like Todd. You know, coming together as a team and just understanding that like we all plan for each other, and the way Canes run their businesses, they play for each other, they do work for each other, they do the same thing as us, just in a different organization. I feel like it's a blessing, you know, and it's amazing how you could correlate two different things and put it as one," said Winnie Watkins Jr.

The Tigers play at Auburn at 11 a.m. this Saturday. WBRZ will air the game.

ATLANTA, Ga. - Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream have taken a 2-1 lead in the WNBA Finals with a 97-71 win over the Golden State Valkyries Wednesday night.

For the second game in a row, Reese led the way for the Dream with 21 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Atlanta shot 49% from the field and 41% from three-point range while Golden State shot 35% from the field and 40% from three.

If Reese and the Dream win their next two games, they will clinch their first WNBA Finals Championship.

BATON ROUGE - For the first time since getting injured against Ole Miss back in September, LSU tight end Trey'Dez Green is not listed on the initial SEC availability report ahead of LSU's game against Auburn.

Green had been listed as "out" in every other availability report LSU has released since Green suffered the knee sprain. In the three games Green has played in so far this season, he's caught 14 passes for 22 yards and one touchdown.

This move seems to foreshadow Green being available for this Saturday, although linebacker Whit Weeks is still listed as "out".

Edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen was also not listed on LSU's initial availability report, a positive sign that he will play for the Purple and Gold on Saturday. Umanmielen went down with injury in the first quarter against Mississippi State. He did not return to the game, but was on the sidelines in street clothes.

A new name on the report is freshman defensive tackle Richard Anderson. He has been ruled "doubtful," but it is not clear what his injury is.

LSU and Auburn will release updated reports on Thursday and Friday.

BATON ROUGE - There are only so many ways to describe how Catholic running back Jayden Miles performed against Zachary in the Bears' 70-38 win over the Broncos, but the Florida State commit put his own spin on it.

"I just reached flow state," said Miles of his 205-yard, six-touchdown performance against the Broncos.

But out of the six touchdowns, one sticks out above the rest as Miles' favorite. Despite his pedigree as a blue-chip recruit in the 2027 class, Miles has faced questions regarding one very important aspect of a running back's game: his speed.

Miles' favorite score was the 75-yard touchdown, during which he outran the entire Zachary defense.

"A lot of people last year would say my speed wasn't really there, but that play right there just shows my get-off, my burst, and me being able to sustain that speed throughout the entire play, me just pulling away from defenders."

Miles spent this past summer working on that speed, and that seems to be paying massive dividends. It just seemed like every time Miles touched the ball, something good was going to happen for Catholic. 

But the crazy thing is, six touchdowns in a game isn't even his career high; it's seven. What's even crazier is that Miles scored those seven touchdowns against the very same Zachary Broncos two years ago.
