In 2023, bucket hat iterations include everything from fuzzy, teddy bucket hats to low-key elegant versions in silk and other luxe fabrics. Top off a breezy, springtime outfit with a bucket hat or go for a monochromatic look!

Camouflage Print

No matter how you felt about this trend back then, it’s kinda hard not to love it now. My camo cargos are men’s vintage (tip!). When it comes to the mix-and-match approach, try teaming a camo piece with other patterns or pair it with a sexy silhouette as I did here with a corset for a cool mash-up. The juxtaposition is what makes camouflage feel modern! It also helps the fabric shed its utilitarian rep. Check out some lookalikes I found below.

This summer, within sunglasses trends it’s the go big or go home motto. A bold pair of sunglasses is a surefire way to make a statement. You know those days when you want to hide behind the shades and not wear any makeup? These are life savers.

Tinted

Tinted lenses are more abundant than ever as a 2023 sunglasses trend. The best part is the array of tints means you can match your sunglasses to any outfit. Why not embrace a monochromatic look? I’ve been rocking thick white frames for a couple of seasons now and I’m obsessed. The easiest way to elevate any outfit. There’s something about the bright white frame that makes it stick out from the rest! I love my Loewe white sunnies and I found a really good dupe here.

Slip dresses are just effortlessly elegant and flattering. This chocolate brown one from SIR is a cut out maxi dress featuring contrast floral lace cut-out detail through front to accentuate the waist. I paired it with my white Loewe sunnies, slouchy straw bag, straw hat and Hermès slip-on sandals (very good dupe here). 

Mix and Match

Less is more? Not always. Not if you ask me. Unconventional layers and compositions is a styling trick that many use to step up their looks. It’s a great way to bring personality and character to your look! Here are two basic rules for mix and matching: look for analogous colors, you will hardly go wrong in the composition because they are close and it is very likely to result in a mix sur ton that is beyond chic. Secondly, look for colors that run in opposite directions – these are complementary colors – for a bolder and super stylish combination. Check out some fun options below.

The right Trench

How to choose your trench coat? For me, it’s the slouch, lightweight material, oversized menswear look and details that read vintage. Trenches are so great because they can easily be integrated into any wardrobe and there really isn’t any styling faux pas when it comes to the trench. They really take any look and give it polish (besides rain protection, of course). A lot has been already written about how incredible, versatile and practical the trench coat can be (do you even need to wear anything underneath?). But I give it another go with some fresh options for you to get inspired to rescue yours this spring or maybe invest in a new one.

Boots

Rain boots need to be waterproof — that goes without saying. But more than that, the goal is to look like you’re not wearing a rain boot rain boot. Quiet luxury is fashion’s hot topic lately. It’s all over social media. Let’s break it down, shall we?

When the small screen teens, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, established The Row back in 2006, the luxury world was as impenetrable as ever. But 17 years later, this logo-less label rivals esteemed brands for desirability, with its sumptuous staples, lust-worthy accessories, and eye for detail. So what does quiet luxury mean? Understated and timeless elegance, the ability to make simple wardrobe foundations feel luxurious and unique, impeccable detailing, quality, and craftsmanship. How do you set a proper sleeve? How does a fabric perform? It’s the art of making investment clothes.

Where does this obsession with a sort of casual wealth that transcends shouty logos and seasonal silhouettes come from? Most of the defining attributes of quiet luxury refer to the quality of material, the neutral color palette, and the overall emphasis on basic silhouettes, reflecting a low-key approach to getting dressed. But the defining element of quiet luxury that has incited such cultural fixation relates to its resemblance to an aesthetic most commonly perpetrated by the “old-money” archetype.

The irony is that the general public can participate in this exclusive unrelatable echelon of status and dress like they belong to a particular social class without spending the kind of money you’d assume they might. The vibe is when you know you know. 

But then, does it matter?

One way you can explain this cultural shift is as a predictable response to the most recent bout of logomania. But also, historically the kind of people who wear unremarkable but very fancy clothes – think Phoebe Philo herself – are not drawn to celebrity status and instead prefer to have low-key exposure. People who live and work under the cultural radar and consciously choose to stay there. In an oversharing social media era, there is a deep yearning in the air for a kind of anonymity that we will probably never have again. And at the core, this is what fashion and style is, right? A wordless language. Maybe there is some comfort to be had in your clothes keeping you vaguely anonymous. Especially in a world where Google sure won’t.

Quiet luxury makes me miss the fantasy and the joy of getting dressed. But anyway, the underlining sentiment is that wealth comes in all shapes and sizes — some holders of the oldest money are also the oldest Versace stans. The most profound kind of luxury is freedom. And freedom affords you the opportunity to do whatever it is that you want.

Pick the right cut and size up

Expensive clothes hang perfectly. When I shop at Zara (love them or not, Zara does a pretty good job at making affordable styles if high-end isn’t your speed), I pick coats that fit shoulders well. In general, I will go up one size so it hangs correctly with no bunching. Clothes that skim off the body tend to flatter most so my biggest tip for you is to go up in sizing. I have many clothes that are US16. Size does not matter trust me, it’s about how it hangs. Do the same with jeans: go up a size or two to get that perfect slouch while still keeping a semi-fitted look. You know what else does not matter? The section you’re shopping in – men or women – is irrelevant. 

Pay attention to fabrics

Avoid anything that feels rough or could bobble. Pick fabrics that are fluid (preferably natural like cotton or linen) and flow when walking. Look for skirts that have a good weight to them. I’ve noticed that with pleated skirts, the heavier the material and the more defined the pleats,  the better the skirt flows when walking. Chic usually (not always) entails being a little more covered without looking frumpy. Generally speaking, I prefer to wear skirts midi to maxi length. With the right material, the long length makes the skirt full and it flows better.  

If all else fails, wear black

Do you know that saying if all else fails wear black? Use this philosophy and try one overall color family. The look above is about green, but it could have easily been any color that you like. Below are a few pieces that caught my eye at fair price points. 

More general tips

Pointed shoes and kitten heels, no matter the price point always look chicer. Dull hardware tends to feel more timeless than shiny, which can read trendy. Minimal reads expensive. Stick to staples in neutral colors: black, white, grey, navy, brown and camel. Smaller floral prints tend to look better and date slower than larger all-over prints (read big flowers). Slim on top means oversized bottoms and vice versa. Sunglasses are a great way to elevate a look. Shop the men’s section for single/double-breasted coats and crew neck knits. The styles are classic, details are on point and the boxy cut gives a Celine-like slouch that would make Phoebe Philo proud. Lastly, remember to shop vintage/thrift.

Do you know one for the books? When I wore the biggest Carolina Herrera dress of all time. That silver number was everything on the streets of New York. I felt powerful and realized I had a newfound love for silver – long forgotten. Do you feel the same? Seems like gold was the chosen metal for most people until very recently.

However, there are also plenty of less obvious ways to wear metallics. You don’t have to go all out. Perhaps the easiest way to add a touch of shine to your outfits in 2023: one high-shine item, toned down with other basics or more muted pieces. See how I did the trick with a denim jacket? I have had this sequinned silver dress for years and I have always found new and exciting ways to wear it. From cowboy boots to sneakers, denim, and blazers.  

A Hint

The silver obsession is also having a significant impact on the accessories world. After years of gold hoop earrings and chain necklaces dominating, silver is starting to regain popularity when it comes to everyday jewelry.

And if you’re willing to take a step further, nothing says “disco” quite like mirrored heels or handbags, which will go with a surprising number of outfits. Black denim and Silver, for example, a true love story. Shout out to my Bao Bao bag by Issey Miyake which is definitely a gift that keeps on giving. One thing is for sure, metallics are one hell of a party-ready trend!

Full Skirts

Denim skirts have been so popular this season. They’re not only very stylish but versatile (and affordable!) too. Even the less unconventional wardrobes can find a space for this piece because the denim will instantly add a casual feel to the look! I just love the long and elegant silhouette that a maxi denim skirt can give you as well as that robust denim, which will give you an edge. 

Everything Diesel

Seeing some of today’s top fashion influencers/celebrities wearing Diesel it’s hard to believe that the brand’s U.S. division filed for bankruptcy just three years ago. Its iconic 1956 “pantaboots,” which feature faded jeans that flow into heeled boots, earned the 10th place in the Lyst Index’s ranking of hottest women’s products. Diesel has always been recognized for its sexy, rule-breaking style and marketing, and that’s undoubtedly what the masses are craving after a couple of years of so many rules. For SS22 Diesel debuted utility-inspired and upcycled pieces, many with unique finishes and textures. For SS23 the brand delivered acid-toned racer-back or spaghetti-strap minidresses sometimes garlanded with florals and contrast-colored lace. Here for it!

Extra Baggy

Go big or go home, ain’t that the saying? While skinny jeans firmly remain persona non grata, baggy jeans are on everyone’s mood boards and wardrobes. A look that was super popular in the ‘90s. There’s a nonchalant vibe to the denim, too; it shows you don’t need to wear skin-tight pieces to look sexy. There’s more mystery to them, and that in and of itself, makes them ultra-sexy.

Denim Dress

This season, we’re swapping our poplin shirtdresses and prairie dresses in favor of another denim must-have: the denim dress. Both chic and cool. If you’re worried they’ll look too Western, it all comes down to how you style your denim dresses to make them edgy not prairie. You might have seen my Dior Show GRWM on tiktok and instagram! I LOVE doing tiktok’s like this because it really shows you how you can recreate the vibe of luxury brands with accessories! Just with a silk tie and fedora I was able to channel the luxury house! Silk ties (especially those from the menswear section) are now a wardrobe staple. Wear it with a cropped shirt and blazer to give a Miu Miu feel. They look sophisticated, cool and still slightly unexpected! (Also, don’t miss the trending Menswear styles spotted during Milan FW!) I’m definitely wearing more ties in the future!

Statement Jewellery

Statement jewellery might sound like a thing of the past, but that’s a myth! Big and chunky jewellery (especially earrings) have been given a modern update! One of my favourite purchases lately have been these statement Bottega Veneta earrings! (They come in more colours that I’ve added to the carousel below!) The design is so timeless and is perfect to elevate even my most casual outfits! These are definitely  a market favourite because I’ve seen dupes on Etsy! AZ Factory

In the last months of his life, Alber Elbaz launched AZ Factory – described as “beautiful solutions-driven fashion that works for literally everyone”. Anchored in the highest savoir-faire, the goal was to rewrite the fashion rules, making designer clothes not just more affordable but more accessible to women in a range of different sizes. While still paying attention to environmental responsibility in the process. The Amigo concept, which launched earlier this year, invites lesser-known names who share AZF ethos to create collections under the AZ Factory banner. Because my personal style is evolving to an edgier look, I’ve been more and more interested in pieces that seamlessly blend traditional craftsmanship with forward-looking applications and technology. Fe Noel

Brooklyn-based womenswear brand Fe Noel was founded by Felisha “Fe” Noel and is deeply influenced by her Caribbean heritage. With a passion for travel, a love of vibrant colors, and a penchant for bold prints Fe entered the industry at 19, opening a brick-and-mortar boutique for vintage lovers in Brooklyn. Ouest Paris

Finally, I discovered this trending brand last year in Paris and I love how cool and creative the brand is! A perfect cocktail of streetwear, raw denim, skate-inspired pieces, workwear details, and volumes. Ami designer, Arthur Robert, took inspiration from the success of that line in making the leap to create his own brand. One of his current bestsellers is this unexpected pair of jeans featuring an apron-front wrap-around that I own and love (available on sale in dark beige)! Mood-boosting brights are going nowhere in 2023, with variations of yellow popping out as well. There’s no doubt that these are statement colors and they look fabulous worn head to toe.

Matching sets are nothing new, but they’re a fun way to get into maximalism. Matching sets are the spring trend we can’t get enough of: minimal effort, and maximum style points. Seriously, something about a matching top and bottom set just looks like you’ve got it together, even if it took you approximately three seconds to put on.

I went ahead and scoured the internet for the best eye-catching silhouettes to add to your wardrobe this spring. From intricate skirts and denim coats to oversized sleeves and even asymmetric dresses, take a look at the carousel below. 

Bold Patterns

Maximalism is all about finding freedom in style — it’s fun, it’s unpredictable, and it’s everything that fashion oughta be. Orange Accents

I am living for the duo: grey and orange. It looks like the smartest combo ever, doesn’t it? Besides, these tailored asymmetric pants are giving the kind of girl boss energy I like. The bag is Borbonese and you can find it here (there’s also a baguette version!). I am also wearing the Lumi Bomber by The Frankie Shop in Olive Green (unfortunately sold out) and Hogan’s Olympia-Z sneakers.

All about the coat

Layering is my favorite way to put an outfit together and topping off a look with statement coats is just *chef’s kiss*. It’s *the* finishing touch to any outfit, and you know I’m someone who doesn’t shy away from color, patterns or prints. I thought this coat was particularly show-stopping! It’s from Psychedelic Overdose. The sunglasses by Balmain gave the look the unexpected sporty twist it needed (last pair, make it yours!)!

The 70s show

From casual to glam, light or dark, purple is having a moment. And bold metallics are by far one of the most exciting trends I’m embracing this year. Purple and gold: a match made in heaven. The dress is by swiss fashion house Akris from their SS23 collection, paired with the Trapezoid belt and my metallic Jimmy Choo boots which are now on sale. Couldn’t find the exact same dress but I found this one and this one and the same color.  

But Make It Edgy

Call it Barbiecore or whatever you like, but hot pink is giving dream world. This Ruffle Dress by Az Factory is a powerful, sexy silhouette, with removable shoulder pads and an asymmetric ruffle with  a peek-a-boo cut-out at the hip. I paired it with my PS over-the-knee boots and Balmain sunnies for edge. 

Bringing Sexy Back

It’s not a dress. It’s a PatBO dress. Words cannot describe how powerful I felt wearing this jewel toned number. You can find more fringes by Brazilian designer Patricia Bonaldi here, here and here. 

Peekaboo

For this look, I layered my incredible laser-cut circle skirt by A.W.A.K.E. Mode (US2 available here) over a pleated color-block skirt by Christopher John Rogers (still available in orange). It was the green peeking out under all the black that did the trick! It was such a dynamic and contemporary look. This skirt by A.W.A.K.E. Mode makes a disruptive addition to your closet! Showcasing a sensual design defined by intricate laser-cut circles layered next to and atop one another, it allows flashes of skin to show through, making for the ideal piece to create a flirtatious, statement-worthy ensemble. One of my favorite looks of the season, I must say.

Acid

As the new year gets underway, we’re seeing eye-catching acid color palettes take hold. Expect to see green, raspberry, azure and fluorescent yellow pieces all over Instagram come spring. If you’re nervous about these shades, opt for a classic silhouette. The simplicity of a basic shape perfectly balances out the vibrancy of brighter, “look at me!” hues. Get ahead of the curve with some of the options I found online.

Muted

The classic cable-knit sweater we all know and love has gotten a facelift. You can always count on the standard corded sweater, but it’s nice to revamp our wardrobes with new styles. This season, it’s all about cropped silhouettes. See how I wore a supposedly boring number with daring cargo bottoms and chunky chelsea boots to create an edgy look. It’s the contrast for me.

Vivid

The go-bold-or-go-home style has cemented itself as a winter staple. Bright and clashing colors are all up for grabs, putting a pop of color back into your cold-weather attire. Layer the punchy and adventurous knits with a suit for an instant cool-girl effect.

Utility Stays Strong

First up – utility. Cargo pants and other utility elements have been having a great run while Y2k is continuing as our macro trend. And, I’m not complaining. It’s about playing with that hi-lo volume (a tight fitting top and a loose fitting bottom). I styled this trend with my Loewe boots, which I talk about in more detail here! One thing that I’ve seen particularly popular in Milan FW is mixing looks with blazers (I’ll talk about this in more detail later!) The mix of a structural blazer and cargo pants has been a combination I’ve been loving (and styling) for AGES! 

Winter Denim

I can’t wait to introduce this one: Winter Denim!! During the end of last year, I grabbed my denim skirt whenever I could. There’s just something about denim that is cool. Milan FW showcased some of the best denim styling I’ve seen! It’s moving away slightly from Y2k and more into the realms of deconstructivism or DIY. Think of distressed and upcycled elements. Don’t mind me, just adding items to my wishlist. 

Suit Up!

As mentioned earlier, blazers have taken centre stage at Milan FW. Though, every type of tailored piece was just about seen there!  The menswear section definitely was raided by the looks of things. It was hard not to awe at the beauty of the well constructed suits and double-breasted coats. Also to note, grey was the most popular colour choice!! Let me just say, I’m ready to continue my love of wearing a well tailored grey coat in winter.

Laid-back Muted Tones

Paris really said let’s chill with the dopamine dressing and decided to tone down the colours. One colour I’ve been seeing a lot during Paris FW is black! I wrote about this trending colour a couple of weeks back. Although Paris is holding the reins on maximalism (I love maximalism however!), the importance is for it to never be boring!!  Some of the best street style of laid-back tones was the use of menswear. Following this trend, I wore one of my favourite buys – tailored Acne studios trousers!! I just love the front fold that gives it that special edge compared to the usual tailored trousers. I’m embracing this laid-back tone trend if it means more menswear! – I can’t wait for the next season. 

Utilitarian Grunge

Get your grunge on, because the year is getting grungier!! There’s so many denominations of grunge at the moment ranging from punk-grunge to indie-sleeze. But, the style I’ve identified in Paris FW is utilitarian-grunge! This is a mix of motorcore (which I’ve talked about was trending during NYFW – think motorcycle jackets) with grungy elements. For this trend it seems that over-the-knee boots are a must!! 

Single Tone Outfits

During Paris FW, it’s less about colour mixing but rather single tonal outfits! Perhaps this is the evolution of the use of colour. It used to be that overly matching colours were sort of ‘old fashioned’. But, it’s great to see how you can really elevate your style by wearing a single colour! Get ready to see many white, pink, green and black single tone outfits! Actually, I wore a single tone outfit in Milan that I posted on my IG here! Oversized with a Nod to Y2K

Let’s face it, oversized never gets old! There’s a reason why fashion keeps going back to it. And, from the runways I’ve seen, skinny jeans are still left out of the chat for the time being. Though, that’s perfectly fine with me, because what’s most important for me is the type of silhouettes I love to create. This look is one of my classic favourites!! I wore a body-fitting Balmain top with low waist parachute pants (they’re mens from GU store). The hi-lo styling technique is one that if done right looks so amazing (and yes, that midriff is a not-so-subtle nod to Y2K!) For me however, the Loewe boots are the real scene-stealers. Perhaps a bit controversial for some. But, I LOVE THEM. I also love the energy this look gives me! 

Animal Prints Forever

For the Robert Cavalli runway, I wore this STUNNING skirt two-piece from the designer. Can we just take a moment for this massive A-line skirt situation!!! And what’s more, the animal-skin effect that’s embossed in the fabric gives an oompf of coolness to the feminine look! It was dangerous to wear by just how amazing I felt moving in a skirt like that. To finish this look, I wore Alexander McQueen sunglasses, and Robert Cavalli shoes and minibag. 

Patterns to Your Advantage

One major element that I was keen not to miss about being in Milan was to showcase a look with PATTERN, PRINT and COLOUR! If there’s a fashion city that is number one for pattern designs it’s Milan. This insane dress from La Double J, was perfection for me. Just look how the bright pattern of the dress just envelops my body. One of my favourite uses of a pattern on a garment to date!! Best believe, I’m not leaving crumbs this fashion month. Which looks from Milan Fashion Week were your favourite?

A growing interest in capsule wardrobes and conscious shopping has had many people gravitating toward quality over quantity. And it’s no coincidence that brands have been dipping back into their archives to revive the iconic pieces of the past that have stood the test of time — from Prada’s ’90s-inspired Cleo bag to Gucci’s Jackie from 1961 (I found the cutest burgundy one on Vestiaire). Whether you’re interested in an investment purchase to last a lifetime or seeking out a retro silhouette, I have found the must-haves and their lookalikes – so keep scrolling.

The Saddle

I love the iconic Dior Saddle – I’ve had it for years and it’s one of those gifts that keeps on giving. What defines the Saddle style is the fold-over flap, the curved shape at the bottom, and the “C.D.” logo hardware. These are the design elements that make this bag an interesting and timeless staple. Nearly every designer and retailer crafted their own version of the saddle bag. You can definitely afford the trend and actually have tons of great options to shop. Besides, there are even some good deals out there, especially for authentic vintage Dior! 

The iconic Jackie

In an increasingly technology-filled world, many people are opting for nostalgia-inspired aesthetics that are reminiscent of decades past. The Jackie is no exception. Boasting a half-moon hobo-style silhouette, the Gucci Jackie feels contemporary to this day. With the exception of the monogram styles, the Jackie has no obvious logos, making it identifiable only to those in the know. In mini, small and medium, there is a Jackie 1961 bag to accommodate all manner of daily essentials. Whether you’re enamoured with the new-season Jackie 1961 or looking to invest in a vintage style, there are plenty of excellent options: from woven raffia to the classics we couldn’t do without. Again, it may be 62 years old, but the Gucci Jackie 1961 doesn’t show its age. It’s cool, it’s classic and it looks so damn good. 

Nylon/Utilitarian

Undeniably one of the most beloved bag trends of the moment, a practical must-have for pretty much every situation in life — and weatherproof too. We may or may not have traveled back to the ‘90s with these nylon accessories, but I’m not mad about it. Since Prada first released nylon bags in 1984, the brand has pushed to prove that practicality and luxury can go hand-in-hand. Moreover, that performance fabrics do have a place in the fashion sphere.

Every season I love being in the NYFW street style scene!! It’s so amazing to see how fashion is evolving in this city with so much inspiration to be found! Like many, this season I wanted to push my fashion to new levels (bag I wore above is from Brandon Blackwood, sunglasses by Loewe and dress is by Claudia Li)- check out the post here about what I wore for NYFW! I’d say this season has been one of the best street styles I’ve seen in NY to date! Here’s some of the trending street style that I spotted! How many of these did you already know? 

‘Motorcore’

‘Motorcore’ anyone? Chances are you’ve already been styling something similar to this NYFW street style trend!! Motorcycle jackets have been making it’s hot appearance last winter with many people going to their local vintage store to find one (like I did here)! Though, a good thing doesn’t go so easily! Motorcore (as it’s now aptly named) consists of motorcycle jackets and other boxy leather jackets. However, it’s been continued with just about any leather piece that’s evocative of it. I just LOVE how motorcycle jackets give that instant element of ‘coolness’ to your look!

Rosettes

Rosettes are picking up momentum as it’s already crowned as one of 2023’s hottest trends! What are rosettes exactly? They’re decorative roses that are found far back in history (from the 17th century). But, most of the current inspiration is from the 90s era’s of rosettes – also found in season 3 of ‘Sex and the City’! Rose motifs have already one of my favourites – like these Loewe heels I wore with a rose heel! We’ll definitely be seeing more of those as they’ve been spotted on the Acne Studios and Sandy Liang runways. 

Fiery Colours – Pops of Red

Red. I can’t get enough of this colour and neither can many fashion go-ers spotted during NYFW! It makes sense that red is making a fiery comeback as it’s part of the list of Pantone’s colour of the year! I just love the fierceness that red instantly adds to an outfit. I call it a colour stealer because your eyes are simply drawn to that part of your outfit. Instantly elevate your wardrobe (and mood) with a pop of red this season!! It’s safely one of my favourite colours next to kelly green! What NYFW streetstyles have you been loving?

Lingerie – The Internet’s Favorite Trend

Kicking off the first day of NYFW I wore this slip dress moment by L’Agence and thought it was kind of iconic. Correct me if I’m wrong. A California lifestyle, with a French attitude, right? Slip dresses are sleek, lightweight, and effortlessly stylish. I paired this one with chunky boots, for contrast, and a peekaboo skintight leopard print mesh top that gave the outfit that much more interest.  

Playing with Proportions

I was feeling myself in this look! Wearing a tight corset heart top, a big voluminous midi skirt, and a super cropped denim jacket that worked so well with the fancy side of the outfit. Cherry on top were my rose-heeled shoes by Loewe – I swear by these lately. Such a fun take on the classic slingback shoe! In my hand, I was carrying the Le 5 à 7 leather shoulder bag by YSL. Cannot get tired of this bag!

Fashionable, But Make it Puffy

For this look, I wanted to experiment with fashion. Day 3 of NYFW in a women’s owned brand: PH5 – innovative, sustainability-focused, and whimsical knitwear brand. This season I wanted my hair to shine bright (yes, just like Riri’s diamond) so I am playing around with it just like a fashion accessory. It not only compliments my looks but sometimes it’s also the star of the show! 

Platforms Mania

Girls just wanna have fun, and platforms will take you there. Fortunately, we are heading to new heights with a whole lot more stability beneath our feet because the chunky platform is finally taking the front seat. Versace Triplatform Boots, which I’m wearing here, are the best to step out on the town in the season ahead. Do I look giant wearing these? Yes. Do I love it? Also yes.

Spotlighting black designers has been a huge passion of mine (above I’m wearing LaQuan Smith!). I’ve done some previous posts in the past of black designers you should know! In honour of Black History Month, I wanted to spotlight some black designers that you should definitely not be sleeping on!! Although the fashion industry has the 15% pledge (created by Aurora James), there’s still a long way to go. Below are some designers that I’ve been keeping my eye on (and you should too)!

LaQuan Smith

Born in Queens, Laquan Smith’s rise to fame came quickly after celebrities started bagging his 3D leggings. Though Laquan Smith’s attempt to break into the fashion industry wasn’t easy (denied by Parsons and FIT), today he’s one of the hottest designers! Those who love sultry and feminine clothing please rejoice!! Laquan’s mission has always been to empower women through his designs (we can’t miss the connection of how his grandmother and many other women were his role model growing up). Does glittery minidresses, leather corsets and edgy bodysuits sound enticing for you? Then take a look at the carousel of his latest pieces – his SS23 collection is his attempt to give women “some air”. He states in his Vogue interview that his collection is “about the female form, about sensuality and femininity, that’s what we’re here to celebrate today”. 

Christopher John Rogers

Christopher John Rogers (CJR) is quickly becoming a household name through his “pragmatic glamour” aesthetic designs. One thing you can be sure of when it comes to CJR is that you’ll always be in for some unapologetic drama! However, what critics and buyers love most about his designs is how he has mastered the creation of showstopping pieces without the fuss or complication. In addition, CJR is unafraid to be unconventional by using unusual fabrics and mixing inspirations that seem to oppose each other. In other words, he’s ground-breaking because he’s looking to break any conventional moulds. 

Heron Preston

The last designer (though there’s so many more!) I’m spotlighting for Black History Month is Heron Preston! If you know the late Virgil Abloh and Matthew Williams, then you’ll definitely know Heron Preston who is the co-founder of the streetwear collective called Been Trill. Preston already boasts of creative acumen being a DJ and artist alongside a designer that graduated from Parsons. After an ocean swim opened his eyes on the polluting effects of the fashion industry, Preston launched a sustainable streetwear brand. He’s one of the few designers that are not afraid to comment on environmental issues, internet youth, and counterfeit culture. We stan!

The Fuss Free

Fuss free does not mean loungewear. Any other night of the week you’ll be cooking in the comfiest clothes you own, but for dinner party outfits, loungewear won’t cut it. You’ll want to dress up. But not be so dressy you feel overdressed. This might be the perfect opportunity to try out something new. For example the cargo trend. Cargos + Tabi Sneakers = it’s a wombo combo! 

Party at the Top

Think about what’s happening with the top half of your outfit (after all, at the table that’s pretty much what’s there to see). Perhaps it’s time to rock the statement top you’ve been dreaming about for weeks. This Lapointe magenta suit, for instance, is pure joy. If you love dressing for comfort and style, this is it.

All Out

If your friends are coming chez toi, make the most of the wardrobe at hand and use this as a testing ground for the brave look. This sequinned green dress is pure drama. So are these pants I’m wearing by Lapointe! Daring but still sensual. I love a bit of glam all year round, so I always look for interest in my accessories, for example, this pair of rose-heeled slingback shoes by Loewe. It’s the provocative heel for me!

Extra Tip:

Great jewelry or fun heels are the “cherry on top” of any dinner party outfit! Hosting at home is also the perfect excuse to wear shoes you love but don’t get much use out of. I am wearing Louboutin embellished pumps – the embodiment of glamour.
