Beautiful Places to See Near Zurich

Like Geneva, Milan, Munich, and many other European cities, Zurich has much to offer and is ideally located to discover multiple superb spots nearby. Thanks to Switzerland’s capillary transportation network, you can reach many destinations by train and/or bus. If you hire a car, it will be even more manageable, allowing you to travel farther. And if you want to avoid any hassle, there are many organised day trips from Zurich to several appealing destinations.

If you’re planning your itinerary or just looking for a weekend escape, consider these fantastic day trips from Zurich. Whether you prefer cities, quaint towns, the majestic Swiss Alps, or even a brief excursion into Germany or Liechtenstein, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Best Day Tours from Zurich: Cities

Day Trip from Zurich to Lucerne

Lucerne is renowned for its stunning lake and mountain scenery, as well as its preserved medieval architecture and painted houses. First of all, stroll in the charming alleys of the old town and walk across the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), spanning the Reuss river. The iconic wooden bridge, captured in many postcards, dates back to the 14th century but was sadly largely destroyed by a fire in 1993. It was lovingly restored and still holds a unique charm. Other landmarks to visit include the Lion Monument, carved in a quarry in 1820 by Bertel Thorvaldsen, the Danish sculptor who spent most of his life in Italy and was one of the leading artists of the Neoclassical movement.

Don’t miss a boat ride on Lake Lucerne, surrounded by an idyllic landscape of verdant hills and snowcapped mountains. Mount Pilatus, Mount Titlis and Mount Rigi are very popular nearby mountain spots. However, it would be best to consider them (one or the other) as a day excursion from Zurich or Lucerne. In any case, you can visit Lucerne and Mount Titlis from Zurich with a guided tour.

How to get from Zurich to Lucerne: There are regular trains from Zurich to Lucerne, with a journey time of between 41 and 60 minutes, depending on the number of stops between the two cities. This is by far the option I recommend if you plan to take a day trip to Lucerne from Zurich on your own. You can check the timetable, prices, and buy your ticket on Omio. Once you’re in Lucerne, I suggest the Mt. Pilatus cable car, cogwheel train and lake cruise tour. Driving takes more or less the same time, and you’ll have the hassle of finding a parking place for your car.

Often overshadowed by larger cities like Zurich and Geneva, Bern offers a unique and timeless charm. Bern also stands out for its lush green spaces and the green-turquoise water of the meandering river Aare.

Explore the charming old town, with its well-preserved historic houses and numerous fountains featuring ornate pillars that support statues. Admire the medieval Zytglogge clock tower, where every hour, the astronomical clock puts on a fascinating show as automated figurines bob and dance. In case you’re having an independent day trip from Zurich to Bern, you may enjoy a guided walking tour where you’ll discover the city’s must-see sights and learn about the history of Switzerland’s capital.

Stroll along the turquoise waters of the Aare River and take in the delightful surroundings. If you’re passionate about art and architecture, don’t miss visiting the Paul Klee Zentrum. The museum, shaped like a double wave, was designed by architect Renzo Piano and hosts a fantastic collection of Klee’s works of art.

Although Bear Park is one of Bern’s prominent landmarks, it always made me feel uncomfortable. I feel for those poor bears who can roam freely, but in a limited space, and must endure the summer heat. Having said that, as the bear is the symbol of the city (you can also see it in the coat of arms of the Bern Canton), many people visit the Bärenpark.

How to get from Zurich to Bern: There are regular trains from Zurich to Bern, and the journey takes about 60 minutes with the Intercity. If you prefer a guided tour, check out the day trip from Zurich to Bern and the countryside (including a visit to the Emmental cheese factory).

Rhine Falls Tour from Zurich (and Stein am Rhein)

If you’re looking for places to visit near Zurich, the Rhine Falls, combined with Stein am Rhein and possibly Schaffhausen, make for an exciting excursion.

Although Switzerland is mostly renowned for its mountains, quaint villages, and lakes, the Rhine Falls are one of the country’s most notable attractions. Indeed, the Rhine Falls are the largest waterfall in Europe, boasting a width of 150 meters (492 feet) and a height of 23 meters (75.5 feet). There are plenty of things to do over there: admiring the roaring water from the viewing platforms, enjoying a boat ride, or experiencing a thrill at the Adventure Park.

To make your day trip from Zurich even more exciting, I suggest you combine the excursion to the Rhine Falls with a stroll in Stein am Rhein, a delightful town whose finely painted houses will steal your heart as they stole mine. If time allows, you could also envisage a short stop in Schaffhausen, a lovely little city near the Rhine Falls.

How to get from Zurich to the Rhine Falls (and further, Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein): There are regular trains connecting Zurich to the Rhine Falls (the station is Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall) and the journey takes about 50 minutes. You can check the timetable and prices and buy your ticket on Omio. By car, you’ll need approximately 1 hour to get there.

A day trip from Zurich to the Rhine Falls is easy to organize on your own, but if you prefer a guided tour, there are a few interesting ones:

• Stein am Rhein and Rhine Falls afternoon tour
• The Rhine Falls, Stein am Rhein and Titisee Private Trip also allows you to discover the pretty Titisee in the German Black Forest.
• If you’re short on time, consider the half-day tour to the Rhine Falls by coach.
• Another exciting day tour from Zurich combines the Rhine Falls, a visit to chocolate and cheese factories, and some time to explore the charming little city of Appenzell.

Exciting Day Trips from Zurich to the Alps

Although Zurich is a fantastic city, I doubt anyone would visit Switzerland without seeing the mountains. Geneva is undoubtedly closer to the Alps, but you can also discover enchanting alpine scenery and quaint villages from Zurich.

Day Trip to Interlaken, Grindelwald & Lauterbrunnen

There are so many charming mountain villages in Switzerland and breathtaking alpine panoramas that you could easily stay for months to explore them. However, some are more famous than others, and Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and Interlaken are among them.

If you’re looking for a fantastic day trip from Zurich to the Alps, look no further. The day tour to Grindelwald, Interlaken, and Lauterbrunnen allows you to discover the beautiful Bernese Oberland region, savour the charm of a few charming villages, and enjoy spellbinding mountain views, including the famous Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch. Zurich to Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch is arguably one of the most popular attractions in Switzerland. Being the highest railway in Europe, hence the nickname “Top of Europe“, it’s not surprising that tourists from all over the world visit it. Additionally, it’s one of the most exciting UNESCO Heritage Sites in Europe.

Organising the trip to Jungfraujoch from Zurich by yourself is highly challenging due to the multiple transportation means to reach the destination. For that reason, it’s a much better option to book a day tour from Zurich to Jungfraujoch, which includes the train ride to Europe’s highest train station, sufficient time to admire the snowcapped peaks and the Aletsch Glacier and even the cable car ride from Grindelwald to Eiger Glacier.

I had a wonderful time when I visited Jungfraujoch a few years ago, and I’ll never forget those amazing views.

Day Trip from Zurich to Zermatt (and Gornergrat)

I love alpine scenery, and there are a few mountains that are my absolute favorites. The Matterhorn, almost perfectly shaped as a pyramid, is one of those mountains that makes me feel in awe. Furthermore, the views from the Gornergrat, as well as the ones from the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, are nothing short of breathtaking. You’ll admire snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and many of Europe’s highest alpine summits.

How to get to Zermatt from Zurich: It takes 3h 15min by train from Zurich to Zermatt, and on the last stretch, from Visp to Zermatt, you’ll board one of the most scenic trains in Switzerland. On Omio, you can check the schedule, price, and buy your ticket. Unfortunately, seat reservations are not possible on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. If you’re traveling by car, don’t forget that Zermatt is car-free, so you’ll have to park in Täsch and catch the shuttle train to reach the alpine town.

If you prefer to avoid the hassle, the small group tour from Zurich to Zermatt and Mt. Gornergrat is a great option to discover one of the most beautiful mountain sceneries in Europe (and, in my opinion, the world). It’s a long journey, though. Additionally, it’s essential to consider the altitude at the Gornergrat, which is 3,100 meters/10,171 feet. Also, be sure to wear appropriate clothing, as it can be very cold even in Summer.

Switzerland is definitely not short of scenic train routes, and the vintage train ride to Schynige Platte in the Bernese Oberland is a memorable experience. Get ready to board a cute cogwheel train and reach one of the most breathtaking mountain sceneries in the Swiss Alps.

Leaving Wilderswil, a small town near Interlaken, the train slowly climbs steep tracks across beautiful forests, green fields dotted with flowers in Summer, and glimpses of the surrounding peaks. It takes many twists and turns and 52 minutes to ride 7.26 km (4.51 mi) until it reaches its destination: Schynige Platte, the plateau offering magnificent views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau as well as over Lake Brienz.

The slow journey to Schynige Platte along the cog railway is pure bliss. As I sat in the vintage open carriages, lulled by the rhythm of the climbing train, my thoughts quickly flew away to an imaginary world mixing memories from the past and present emotions.

I felt like I could experience the journey with all my senses: not only the stunning views but also the smell of the forest, the sound of the wind (and of the climbing train, of course), the taste of fresh air, and so much beauty.

As soon as I stepped out of the train, I was overwhelmed by the stunning mountain scenery: green meadows, rocks carved by erosion, and, a little farther, glittering white glaciers. It was as if an imaginary board welcomed me, telling me, ‘ Welcome to Paradise.’

Schynige Platte is the starting point for several hiking trails of various lengths and difficulty. Although I didn’t have enough time for a long walk, I headed towards one of the shorter paths to enjoy a little physical exercise and admire more of the stunning landscape surrounding me.

On the way back, I stopped to have a look at the alpine garden, which collects over 600 species, before heading to the panoramic restaurant for one of my favorite typical Swiss dishes: Rösti (for those who have never tasted it, it’s made of fried grated potatoes often including bacon and in some cases with a fried egg on top), washed down with a glass of cold beer.

Whether you’re a mountain lover or passionate about scenic train routes, the Schynige Platte vintage train is a must-do in Switzerland. Aside from Jungfrau Top of Europe, offering magnificent views of the glaciers, and the Gornergrat in Zermatt, overlooking the Matterhorn and its perfect shape like a pyramid, Schynige Platte has the advantage of being lesser known but beautiful.

Furthermore, the ride to Schynige Platte is suitable to all. Families with children, couples looking for a romantic gateway, elderly keen to spend a day out in nature without having to worry too much about the altitude or hikers keen to walk along lovely and lesser crowded trails.

I’ve been hiking alone for a long time, and I had my share of one-day walks, some quite long. I learned a few valuable lessons, like never underestimating how quickly the weather can change and being prepared (as much as possible) for the unexpected. Day hike packing list and must-have hiking gear

Backpack

I assume that anyone going on a day hike will have a backpack. However, choosing the right one is crucial so you are comfortable and the burden doesn’t load too much on your back. These are the most significant features of a day hike backpack:

• 22-25 liters: enough to store your essential gear
• Breathable air mesh back panel: you don’t want your daypack to stick on your back, do you?
• Load-bearing hip belt to keep your backpack stable and reduce the weight on your back.
• Integrated rain cover, so that you don’t have to buy a separate one.

I’m a big fan of Osprey backpacks and have a few in different sizes. They’re pricey but sturdy, and I particularly like that they have backpacks specially designed for women.

Hiking Shoes

Technically speaking, you don’t pack your hiking shoes but… This is the most essential hiking gear since hiking shoes have a huge impact on comfort AND safety. Therefore, if you have a limited budget, you can buy cheaper versions of any hiking essentials, but shoes and backpacks are the ones for which you should spend more.

What are the key features of hiking shoes?

• Comfort: this is very personal because everyone’s feet are shaped differently. You can buy hiking shoes online, but first, go to a store and try them on.
• Waterproof: few things are more unpleasant than wet feet. Even if the sun shines, you might have to cross a stream.
• Proper dented soles to walk on rough terrain.

I’m delighted with my La Sportiva hiking boots. High and supportive of my ankles, they were my faithful companions when hiking Los Glaciares in Patagonia, the Dolomites, and many other places.

Additionally, I recently bought a pair of mid-height La Sportiva hiking shoes, which are perfect for day hikes. Although I miss feeling my ankles steady, these shoes are lighter and more practical when I go on trails that I already know are not particularly challenging. They’re also convenient for a short break because I can wear them with jeans and don’t need to bring a second pair of shoes. I use mine quite often, and I bet you would, too.

Spare clothes (especially when it’s warm)

How you dress for your hike depends on the season, the location, and the weather. However, whatever your outfit, you must be prepared in case of a sudden change in the weather conditions. Something that can quickly happen in the mountains.

Winter and cold temperatures make things easier. Layers are the way to go; if it suddenly gets warmer, it’s just a matter of removing a layer. But Summer, as well as Spring and Autumn, can be treacherous. That’s why I suggest always adding spare clothes in your backpack when you head for a day hike. Looking at the weather forecast before hiking is good practice, but remember that it’s not an exact science. Forecasts can be wrong.

If you wonder what to bring on a day hike, here’s my hiking checklist of spare clothes: 

• Lightweight gore-tex hardshell jacket with hood, to face rain and wind.
• Fleece jacket or sweater
• Rain cover pants
• Quick-dry hiking pants (convertible pants are a good option )

Hiking poles

Since I started using hiking poles, I always bring them with me. They make me feel more stable, and they help me reduce the impact on my knees when walking downhill.

Like everything, there’s a variety of options to choose from, from cheap sticks to expensive ones. To be honest, unless you’re off for a very challenging expedition, I don’t think it’s worth spending a lot of money. Mid-range priced hiking poles will do well enough.

However, when choosing, keep in mind a few hiking poles essential features.

• Collapsible sticks are much more practical to carry along once your hike is over. You can choose between telescopic and folding hiking poles. I have a pair of telescopic sticks with twist locks, and recently bought folding sticks which are extremely practical.
• Shock-absorbent
• Light-weight
• Natural cork grips: they’re not essential, but they’re useful to absorb sweat, and I find them more pleasant to the touch.

Water bottle and purifier

Hydration when hiking is essential and my day hike packing list always includes at least 1 liter of water (33 Oz.), often two liters (66 Oz.). I usually prefer cold water; however, on a cold and windy day, a hot beverage is a sweet treat.

Tube Bandana, Lightweight quick-dry towel

A tube bandana is a simple, light, and cheap accessory which is one of my favorite and should be included in any day hike packing list. 

I like tube bandanas for their versatility. I use them as a neck warmer, headscarf, hair wrapper, and always bring one or two with me, wherever I go, and not only when off to the mountains.

Indeed, I felt glad to have one with me when I fell while hiking the West Highland Way in Scotland.  I hurt my wrist short before reaching half of the last leg, a very long 30+ km walk. There was no other option than continue hiking, and my wrist was painful. To ease the pain, I regularly soaked the bandana in the cold water of the many streams, wrapping it around the wrist and finding relief. During the summer heat, I wear a wet bandana on my head and feel refreshed. And a tube bandana often adds a fashionable touch to my outfit.

Weather can be unpredictable, and I always have a lightweight, quick-dry, microfiber towel at hand in case of a sudden shower.  I used it quite a lot when hiking in Scotland and when I traveled along the Causeway Coastal Route since showers in the UK are common. No one likes to feel wet all day long, right?

Additionally, I use the towel as a blanket to sit on the grass and enjoy a picnic during my hikes.

First Aid Kit and… Compeed Blister Cushions

I am an optimist by nature, and always think that everything will be fine. I learned my lesson when I hurt myself on a couple of occasions. Since then, I added a First Aid Kit to my day hike packing list.

There’s nothing worse than sore feet, and blisters can seriously ruin a hike. That’s why I never leave without a pack of Compeed blister cushions of mixed sizes, suitable for heels, toe and the side of the foot. A backpack cover is only light protection, and if it pours down rain, it won’t even nearly be enough. Hence, I bag the spare clothes and valuables in a dry sack. And my beloved Sony Alpha a7 II in another one.

Sunscreen

Never forget to protect your skin with a good sunscreen. Also, remember that the sun rays filter as well through thin clouds. Apply sunscreen generously on your face (including ears), your neck (don’t forget the back), and all the parts of your body exposed to the sun.

Emergency Whistle and Power Bank

Hopefully, you’ll never have to face an emergency, but things happen. Especially if you hike alone, like I often do, and follow isolated trails, it’s good to include in your hiking packing list a loud emergency whistle to call for attention.

Don’t rely exclusively on your mobile phone. You might find yourself out of coverage, with a low battery, or your device might break. In case of an unfortunate event, you’ll be happy to have an old basic whistle to call for help.

Talking about the mobile phone, I always carry a power bank to be sure I won’t run out of battery. The INIU portable charger is ultra-slim, light, and fast. The perfect solution for a day hike.
