Philosophy and non-trivial conversations are the ends. A love triangle and non-funny jokes are the means. Hardly a shocker that the ends don't justify the time and energy spent on the means, despite some good performances and better ambience. Streaming Platform: Netflix

Thumbs up by Sahelee Rakshit, Bollywood Life ...One of the biggest strengths of Cocktail 2 is its writing. The dialogues are simple, practical and straight from real life. There is no attempt to sound overly dramatic or poetic, and that honesty works in the film’s favour. Written by Tarun Jain with story by Luv Ranjan, the film understands the pulse of today’s relationships. Thumbs down by Anindita Mukhopadhyay, India TV ...Homi Adjania, who directed Cocktail in 2012, has helmed the sequel too. His style of filmmaking is modern and taps into the flavour of the season. While Cocktail 2 might not be his worst film, we definitely expected a better blend. The characters seemed underdeveloped and unripe, as if a teaspoon of sugar would have saved the drink. But sometimes, all you need is a teaspoon for perfection. And a teaspoon could be a lot.... full review

Santhana Krishnan Ravichandran’s photography is hideously bright and Insta-minded. The soundtrack is catchy but Pritam-by-numbers. There’s nothing at all apart from the central trio, and I couldn’t tell you a single useful thing about any of them aside from how they approach relationships. Nothing sticks, and maybe that’s the intention. Adajania won’t even commit to the contrived drama that builds before Diya and Kunal’s wedding, which Ally is attending as a ‘bridesmaid’; there’s a sudden lurch into manic comedy before Kunal tells the girls off one last time.... full review

At 2.5 hours, you're rooting for a 95-year-old to get answers so he can die in peace. And then you witness one of the most brilliantly done end credit scenes. I call that a movie well-made even if it doesn't engage through its runtime.

The end credits have Dosanjh singing over footage of various humanitarian crises. It’s heartfelt, and a little cheesy—like everything that’s come before. There’s a small, key moment when an old man hesitates to share his Partition memories, saying they’ll be misunderstood and turned into hate. So-So MiD DAY ...The performances are undoubtedly one of the film's biggest strengths. Naseeruddin Shah effortlessly carries the emotional weight of the narrative on his shoulders, delivering a deeply moving portrayal of a man burdened by fading memories and unfulfilled love. Diljit Dosanjh, meanwhile, lights up the screen with his natural charm and warmth, providing the film with some of its most heartfelt moments. Vedang Raina leaves a strong impression as the young Keenu, capturing both the innocence and vulnerability. Review

Boy meets immature girl. Boy meets another immature girl. Does that make the boy mature? The tone of the film makes you feel that that's what the makers are implying. But intentionally or not, they touch upon a trait that the boy has that puts a question mark on the whole premise. If he knows what he wants so clearly, why is he stalling? But that is not why Cocktail 2 was made. The movie wanted to bring some profound conversations to screen. Pretty much everything else comes across as fillers.

That the movie wanted to have conversations at all is the biggest takeaway for me. It is not the norm, right? Stories set in beautiful locations showcasing the urban and/or bohemian lifestyle don't usually have their heart in any part of the writing. Here at least there was life in these dialogues between characters. Even though you know that the good lines from the first half are all foreshadowing for a comeback post-interval. And hey, what do you know, there is some meat even in the final monologue.

Other than that, there is a spark in the montage that goes with the titles. It is not just moments stuck together but marks the age and situates the time-frame of the story. The writing also uses loudness well to bring the catastrophisation experienced by a character to the viewers.

The film's attempts at humour, though, fall flat. Except for one short, fun scene with Ally (Kriti Sanon) making fun of good boys with film names, the rest are slapsticky, out of place with the tone of the rest of the film, or lame innuendoes. That Shahid Kapoor is being taught to dance is funny though!

Other than that, the broader writing is easy to oversimplify as yet-another-love-triangle. I've never found the concept of a love triangle itself appealing—one of those things that I don't 'get' like horror or sexual slapstick. Or maybe I haven't yet encountered a story that explores the potential of the central character truly being at the centre of the two choices. If, from the word go, you know who they are going to pick, what is even the point? No? Is it even a triangle if one side doesn't exist?

Especially when you don't really know the real reason for that choice. Almost always, the person who the protagonist decides to go with is the most superficially written. At least, Cocktail 2 unlike most others in the genre that take it as a given, has Kunal (Shahid Kapoor) "tell" us why he likes who he likes. Maybe, the next one will also "show" us. Then there is this whole business of owning a life-partner with the "yours" and "mine" language. Always brings cringe.

Anyway, given that the film has been made, I am thankful that it sinks its teeth a little deeper into relationships. Actually, in these times when three out of four films seem to be driven by propaganda or messaging, I am just happy to watch something else.

And Cocktail 2 is good for the other senses. You are looking at beautiful people in exquisite settings. The camerawork with its gorgeous framing beautifully enhances the natural light. The music is peppy and almost a constant. The lyrics of most of the songs are above the ordinary.

Also, even if we question why Kunal is the way he is, Shahid Kapoor plays the quiet and "mature" Kunal well enough to make you want to shake him so that he starts speaking. And unless the scenes in which he is shown as a college student are from historic footage, boy, can this 40+-year-old surely pass off as a late-teen!

I would mark this as one of Kriti Sanon's better performances. For one, she is asked to be more than a doll and she is up to the task. Rashmika Mandanna's act, on the other hand, is a downer. It feels like she is going through the motions. It doesn't help that there is something off with her dubbing.

Cocktail 2 ends with making us dislike both women, but at least they stay in character as they do so. Why does the man wait for the pimple to grow into an abscess that is waiting to burst? Maybe there is some resemblance to real life, after all.

Review

Yes, it is long. And it is slow. And yes, it could have been crisper and snappier, which is why it feels a tad self-indulgent. Some side stories come out of nowhere and disappear just the same. They are abrupt and jerky. Other tracks could have been shortened or cut out without much damage. In fact, the absence might have added value. Yet other plots felt over-written and some were difficult to grasp. Also, the first half breaks into song way too often. The second half though, especially the last hour, tethers you to your seat and holds you there right till the last of the end credits has rolled.

Main Vaapas Aaunga's old-world romance brews on a slow flame. The pace might have been okay if it didn't last the whole length of the first half and a little more. That aside, you begin to see glimpses of what the makers are trying to get at. It is more than a simple love story. It is more than even a regular ol' romance set during the India-Pakistan Partition. It is an allegory. Of every displacement in the modern global history and that continues to this day. That was the hook for me at interval. Are they going to make something more of it? Or is it just a fleeting metaphor?

I was not left with any of those questions by the end. I won't say which way it went at the risk of giving away any more of the plot. But their intention was clear, and they put it across beautifully.

Take this in. A whole community decided to not look back at their lived experiences. It collectively suppressed combined and individual trauma—to keep the peace. This is underlined with as much rawness as one scene of sacrifice and helplessness that will stay with every viewer forever. Why? Because the generation that did not actually suffer will just use the brutality endured during the partition to propagate hatred. This hits a nerve. Decisions about the partition were made by people who had no skin in the game. This notion uses a brilliant metaphor. This is thought-provoking and heart-wrenching.

And all of this is done without melodrama or glamourising any one side. That balance is maintained delicately. Another spark in writing shows through with the deft use of non-linearity. This is laced with philosophy about love—a profound take on passion whether it be for work, a person or a hobby.

The performances take the writing a notch higher. Naseeruddin Shah's portrayal of the onset of dementia is as mind-boggling as the writing that weaves the illness with reality. Diljit Dosanjh has a reassuring presence throughout. Vedang Raina and Sharvari are young and earnest, just like their characters.

Given all that the move has going for it proves that it is a well-made one. It is a shame then that it feels unjustifiably stretched with a sluggish first half. :(

Thumbs up by Divya Pal, Bollywood Life ...In the end, the film works because its cast fully commits to the madness. Ayushmann Khurrana, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Rakul Preet Singh all play their parts effectively within the ensemble setup. Girl asks boy to play fake boyfriend. The reasons are irrelevant, for now. Everything that can go wrong, does. And more. Now, add the reason—a politician is after the girl's life. More things to go wrong. Oh boy is married and happily so, by the way. Need I say anything at all? And I haven't given away anything that you wouldn't know in the first 10 or so minutes of the movie.

It is actually quite funny, the situation that our boy, Prajapati Pandey (Ayushmann Khurana), finds himself in. But the choice to make it loud and tacky doesn't serve the story. And that's about sums up what it made me feel.

I guess that means I wanted to watch a different movie. One with a similar story but which tones down the exaggerated reactions and expressions, the intrusive aunt, the caricatured police officer, and so on. So, I am pretty much asking for this potential for a decent comedy film to take a Hrishikesh Mukherjee/Basu Chatterjee route. And that's unlikely to happen, isn't it?

Or maybe it will, some day. Until then, I can complain about the misuse of Ayushmann Khurana's talent even as I appreciate the promise of comic timing shown by Wamiqa Gabbi, Rakul Preet and Sara Ali Khan. Of course, the writing doesn't have too many situations for them to explore that potential, but the half moments they grab on to are noticeable.

If only they spent some time on fleshing out the lines and situations instead of using up the energy to conjure up some random Hindu-Muslim situations. I get that it is satire full of social commentary. But it doesn't land. Firstly, because it comes out of the blue. And secondly, well, it is just not funny.

It actually hurts to see a potentially comic situations making you cringe rather than giggle or even smile. Not that, that hasn't happened before. But, I still feel bad and sad and everything that goes with it, when I know I could have watched something better, they could have certainly made something better. I guess that also means the hope still lives. Until the next time, then.

Another horror-comedy, Stree, worked because of its subversion, allowing a woman to be a threat to all of mankind and confining men to their homes instead. "Do I really want to spend more time writing about this one? Isn't it enough that I've already spent 4+ hours and hundreds of rupees on the trip to the theatre?" These are questions I find asking myself often. And it's hardly a surprise that they came to me for Bhooth Bangla. But I have managed to resist giving into the "No." so far. And I will try again today. Meanwhile, you can skip spending time on reading this one because "Yes, it's that insufferable."

Akshay Kumar is excruciatingly over-the-top—in volume, in expression, in body language. So much so that the other overbearingly shrill actors are drowned in his presence. And it's not as if anything meaningful or entertaining is being said or seen.

Slapstick is of course staple nutrition for any Priyadarshan film that claims to be a comedy. You name it and you will see it—people tripping and falling, people slapping each other such that the slapped goes around in circles, toilet humour, innuendoes—all under the guise of being a laugh riot. I fail to understand, though. Why does characters scoffing and disapproving objectification of women need you to objectify women? With the objective of making you chuckle and giggle, that too!

But then, that would require the writing team to be imaginative. And the creativity began and ended with naming a film centred around a haunted palace, "Bhooth Bangla". And just in case you were wondering, no, the larger story is no more than people disbelieving the haunted-ness of the house and coming around to drop that notion. What with all the jump scares, you see.

The nested story of why spirits have taken to this specific house is a bunch of mumbo-jumbo that needn't have been so. There was so much meat in that story and such lovely complexity. But half of it is just narrated by one character to the other instead of being shown. And the half that is shown feels like a comic strip with caricatures.

With that then, I am left with little interest to ask questions like, "Why did the "reverse" option exist?" It is one thing to accept the fantasticness of a fantasy world. But quite another to give into the axiom that intelligent black magicians don't follow simple logic.

Speaking of logic, I am grappling with the truth that the Priyadarshan-Akshay-Kumar-"comedy" genre exists and continues to do so. Hmmm…

Review

The success of an action film is to wow you with its choreographed moves. That of a violent film is to get you to gasp with every act of brutality. That of a film attempting to make a political statement is to engage you with its argument. Dhurandhar The Revenge has a handful sequences that feel creative. It has so much barbaric chopping and smashing of body parts that you grow immune to the savagery—I was able to stay completely relaxed and take deep breaths in the last sequence, which is quite gory in absolute terms. Last but hardly the least, Dhurandhar's idea of being political is to plaster one politician's face across the screen often enough for it to stay one of the lasting memories of the film. Not the Indian government, not a political party, one person.

This last bit is done to glamourise some of the most known political actions such as the impact of demonetisation. It is repeated often enough that it is outright funny—the impact has to be shown through a fictional movie rather than news channels which are supposed to report facts. It has to be shoved down through fantasy, 10 years later.

Now, once we accept that this is a fairytale, even if a gory one, we can take in stride a lot of what is going on. Like tens of terrorists being shot within 15-20 minutes of run time and maybe a week or two in the story? This is even more ridiculous considering the movie is well over 3.5 hours! Less than 10% of run-time on such an important part of the story?

The pacing of the film generally to isn't anywhere close to that of the first installment of Dhurandhar. That one was a thoroughly engaging watch even if you weren't enjoying what you saw. The writing here doesn't have the agenda of telling you a good story, let alone telling it well.
That Ranveer Singh still manages to put his heart, soul and more to this performance feels like more credit to him than the director. The rest of the cast exists to make the violence and propaganda possible.

Sometimes it is arduous to write about movies that I haven't enjoyed watching. This one doubly so, because I have already spent 3.5 hours plus about 40 minutes of advertisements on it. Especially, when the end product in mind isn't a good film, but a political rally, one that I hadn't signed up to attend.
