‘My life was all happy and all romantic until you showed up!’, he screamed but on realising he was getting overexcited he took back a seat. He was in front of the thing he hated the most, he feared the most and he wished he would have never met it. He was looking at Failure right in its eyes for a few seconds before he burst into tears. He was feeling a vibe of pain which was so strong that his body couldn’t express it in words so it reacted by a teardrop rolling down his cheek. Failure was standing tall and high with his fists on its waist like in a Superman position.

He was still crying and he couldn’t figure out how he met it. Was it fate? or did he take the wrong path which led to Failure’s house? He was utterly confused. ‘You are nothing! You did not do it right! Now the feelings of the dejection and regret will follow and haunt you,’ Failure said with a proud voice. This made him feel a bit more submissive to it. They both sat in a gloomy room with just a window on one wall which was covered with a black curtain. Sometimes the wind blew the curtain aside letting some light enter for a second before engulfing the room in darkness again. Failure lived with a family of Guilt, Regret, and Grief which added to the negative vibe in the house. This made the house uncomfortable in addition to the fact that it really smelled like cadaverine.

“When I was taking all the right steps then how did I end up here? I wasn’t supposed to reach this haunted house, I did not deserve it! He said. Failure made itself comfortable in its chair. It looked scary and people never wanted to meet him. He was always hated and looked upon with disgust, even the person in his company was also called by his name. But he was a wise fellow after all. He knew things about people’s life which no one else could think of, he knew the last bit of each and every person who came to meet him. The thing which made it sad was it was not able to spread its knowledge and tell people what it knew about them. Only a few were courageous enough to look at it and those who questioned were even less.

He was looking away but Failure was still staring at him. Gathering an iota of courage he enquired ‘who are the ones fortunate enough to meet you, friend?’. Failure was jovial now. By now it had started to like a middle age man who was wise and had the energy to talk.

Failure told him, ‘I have met many people in the past eternity and people, generally, would go mute. You, my friend‘ he continued, ‘have the audacity to question my nature which apparently is your reality.’ ‘There are basically two types of people who I generally meet. The first category – are the ones who love what they are doing, but they are not putting enough effort to excel. Second – are the ones who work hard, but do not love what they are doing! The beauty of this house is that no-one can see it until one actually enters one. Quite a surprise! right?’ The more he was understanding what Failure had to say the younger it looked.

‘I welcome them warmly like a guest, in my house, for a few days hoping that someday that person might ask me about the right path to his destination. The least one can do is to ask the reason for such hospitality! Is that too much I’m expecting of mortals? I just want people to get acquainted with me and moreover use my knowledge to know themselves, but’, it paused, ‘they don’t seem to care.’ He was listening quietly, only to notice that the house began to feel comfortable.

On enquiring about the peculiar state of that house, Failure said, ‘this house is painted with depression, therefore it appears black. People get trapped in this house and loose their sanity looking at those charcoal walls. Many of them killed their desires and for the worse part, some even killed themselves. There goes the reason for the rotten smell. The window…’ He interrupted Failure in between and said, ‘teach me please!’

Failure, like an impatient adolescent, started right away, ‘ when you started your journey you had that eagerness of a novice which helped you to take big leaps. Halfway through your journey, you started feeling disillusioned and feelings of anger, frustration and envy flourished. You started to believe in other person’s opinion of your situation, their dogma, as your reality and felt lost. You started seeking opportunities to make yourself comfortable in an illusion to make yourself confident. That was when you needed to listen to your heart. Cheer up! you’re in a place where you can find yourself again and analyse your actions like you had never before.’

He was listening to all this with his eyes shut but could clearly visualise what it had to say. He opened his eyes to see a small child in front of him. It was the same Failure which looked humongous when he feared it! He embraced that child and asked for a way out. The innocent child unveiled the window allowing the golden light to enter that room. Before leaving he asked one last question: ‘will we ever meet again?’. The child replied, ‘I have many houses, I don’t know how soon you may run into one. But now that you know me, don’t forget me, please! I will be happy to teach you more if we meet again, but you will have to accept me and ask for it! After all, you are stronger now!’

He was satisfied and left through the window, into the light which would guide him to his success, truly his own…

‘I don’t believe we have met before!’ he said and she was astonished!

‘I know you keep forgetting things, but remember we met last Saturday in the subway’ she said, ‘I asked you to buy me a ticket, don’t you remember anything?.’ He was stressing hard on his memory trying to recollect and then suddenly he said ‘yeah I remember!’ The girl’s laugh was like spring in the last of December. ‘I think, I remember something now. It’s fuzzy though, so don’t ask me questions about that day!’ he said with a confused look on his face. ‘Yes I will try not to!’ she chuckled.

It had started to snow while they were having a chat outside the subway under the shade. The wind was mild but cold enough to numb anyone’s lips. They both laughed like they knew each other for decades even though it was only one time that they had met! Exchanging phone numbers they went on their way home. On his way, he kept looking at the paper on which her number was written. He smelled the paper which had a familiar scent on it. He opened the door and after hanging his coat stuck the paper with a magnet on the refrigerator and went on to have his dinner. His dinner didn’t have much variety, soup and noodles for that day.He tried to dismiss his solitude with a voice over the radio when suddenly he felt his phone buzz. ‘Hey!’ it said, it was a text from an unknown number. He texted back ‘Hey, is it you? The girl I met two hours ago?’ The text was sent and a reflex reply with a heart emoticon gave the answer.

Well, you never know when and where you find love! It can be just hidden in a metro ticket! At least for him, it was. It was in no time that they became good friends and time ran even faster when they became lovers. The time was now like a hummingbird as soon as they thought to marry at the young age of twenty-five.
It was two years into their marriage and they loved each other very much. The love was more than what God of love, Cupid, had for Psyche. ‘I don’t remember where I kept the keys, honey can you find them?’ ‘Yes! But remember you told me that I kept forgetting things when we first talked to each other?’ he said with a smirk on his face. He took the keys and gave it to her.

Some other day she said, ‘honey can you please repeat your phone number? I think I’m missing a digit’. ‘Really? You should not forget such things!’ he replied. Soon the words ‘I don’t remember’ started becoming a prefix for her sentences until they both went to visit a doctor.

The doctor told him, her condition was fatal but there was a cure for it, but there might be some complications. He listened patiently to what the doctor had to say and then insisted on going on further with the procedure. The operation was declared successful. He was happy like a wrecked sailor who had found a shore.

He asked for his permission and went inside the room she lied in, her eyes closed. He sat down on a chair next to her, slipped his hands into hers and confessed. ‘Honey, this love of ours is unmatched! It cannot be compared with any other. Although it started with a random train ticket as you said’, he said with his eyes filled with tears, ‘but honestly, I didn’t remember any detail that day when you asked me. I did not remember buying any girl any train ticket that Saturday. On that day I was attending my mother’s funeral.’ He choked and continued ‘I met you the first time outside that subway on that snowy day but your scent reminded me of my mother and I fell in love with you at that moment’

He came out and waited for the doctors to bring her out. He sat beside the window whose edge was covered with snow. It was last of December. She came out wearing her characteristic smile and it was like spring again. He greeted her warmly with a hug and said ‘You don’t know how happy I am right now!’ But now her reply changed. The words which were predominant in her speeches were now replaced.

‘I don’t believe we have met before’, she said and he was astonished!

“Do you see that son?” said the father pointing up in the dusky sky while his son and he lied down under the long shade of the tree. The son looked up with confused look but remained silent. “That is an invisible ceiling which hangs above our heads” the father continued “that’s the glass ceiling!”

The son had no clue of what his father was talking about and he continued to look up to the retreating clouds. He observed the sky which was set in a golden glow. “We all have some dreams, some hopes, some opinions and some answers. We want to accomplish our dreams, cherish our hopes, give our opinions and tell some answers to people but we are bound by an invisible force, like we are pushed down by something. You know what it is?” said the father. “I don’t know, might be the bizarre glass ceiling you are talking about” said the son. “Yes, absolutely” said the father “When we want to do something, the world starts telling us that we can’t so such a tedious task because they can’t do it. You are incepted with an idea that a particular thing is impossible, before you begin to do it”.

The son had now started to show interest in his father’s words and the father continued, “The opinion of the people strengthen other people’s glass ceiling. The ceiling stops us from rising high and shining bright. The ceiling is invisible and the process of strengthening it is more silent than the most silent cave in the world. We cannot see it but we feel its force. We start accepting things as our fate and the ceiling gets more strength. We feel low and find ourselves lost because the ceiling has now given our opinions and thoughts a shell to be stored and kept. Our ignorance strengthens it further.”

The sun was now setting below the horizon. The breeze hit the son’s face and his hair fluttering in the air. The son was anxious to know more about it and was now getting a hold of it. He had started to relate the words with his experience. “We are held captive of the thoughts which build the ceiling,” the father said staring into his son’s eyes, “A thought kills you more badly than a knife does. A thought destroys you bit by bit. Do you know what happens when a negative thought enters our mind? It starts infecting our thoughts. First, it makes us think about our past and makes us feel guilty. Then, it interferes with our present thought process and starts halting it. We go through a recursion of a series of all kinds of related negative thoughts. We think over it over and over again. We think about it until it has made its position firm in our brain and we start to believe it as our reality.”

The son had a strange look on his face. His eyes seemed glowing with enthusiasm and face seemed a bit terrified. The stars had taken their place in the sky by now. The father got up to light the campfire. The son was losing his patience and asked “What happens then?” The father lit the campfire and sat beside his son and continued. “Then we give up our hopes to do a particular thing. You know son, in every cloud there’s a dark side and a lighter side and a silver lining in between. In our souls there’s a dark side and a lighter side and the silver lining which stops the dark capturing the lighter side is called hope. If we give up hope we indulge to the darkness and the state of depression takes over us. Do you know why we fall?” the father was now linking their conversation with the son’s favourite movie. “So that we learn to pick ourselves up!” the son replied. The father had a line of smile upon his face and elaborated further, “The glass ceiling is there to stop us from rising. Hope, will, determination are its foes which can crack it up and we get a chance to rise up and shine. The process of breaking the glass is called hard work”
Silence fell upon the night. The fire was glowing bright, illuminating its surroundings, spreading warmth in the air during that cold November night. The father was now was really very tired because he had climbed up the hill early that afternoon with the tents on his back.

The son asked, breaking the silence “Father, if we break our ceiling once will It not be formed again?” The father thought for a while and said “Surely it’s rebuilt!” The son looked a bit disappointed thinking that if it will be rebuilt what’s the point of breaking it? The father looked into his sons face and continued, “But you can still congratulate yourself! Because you would have pushed your own limits by then.” The father closed his eyes to give himself the deserved rest, but the smaller brain was now gone deep into bigger thoughts…

“I think I saw a dream, a dream about turning the tide against.”

From impossible to possible. Recently I had been reading a book and, a line from the book said “You got a dream, and you got to protect it! Nobody should tell you that you can’t do it, not even me!”

Making possible from impossible is just two steps away and believe you me, if you have started your journey; you have come one step closer reaching the destination and only one is lest!. Now, in this uncertain and deceitful world a question hangs in everybody’s mind – is hard work rewarded? Well I would answer “possibly” or “probably” but I would add “continued hard work” is Yes! Definitely rewarded.

You just have to start where you are. You can have an attitude like—“I am kind of person who if he does not knows the answer would tell you that ‘I don’t know it’ but I am the person who is certain of finding the answer”. Sometimes people who others think cannot do ANYTHING sometimes do things which people can’t IMAGINE of.

“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”

The power lies within. A will and you can be sure to find a way. I don not say that the way will appear to you magically, of course you may have to go through certain ways to find out which one is yours. Remember Life is an examination, in which the one who copes often fails because everyone has a different question paper!

Time plays an important role. If you have to save your time from different places you need not to cut short your list of tasks. All you have to do is to squeeze the distance of time between them without actually squeezing the tasks. Now for the poor habit of procrastination is your biggest enemy. Going by some studies: – more time and less work leads to wastage and less time and more work is effective. So go ahead give yourself a tough competition!

Life has to be up and downs because a roller-coaster ride is always more thrilling than a dull train ride. When you are low, a little hope of everything being ‘alright soon’ would do miracles. If you can believe, you can achieve. So wake up with determination and go to bed with satisfaction.

“Work hard until your ideals, become your rivals”
