Designing Worlds looks back … to Eliza Wierwight’s great Banyan House

In this episode of Designing Worlds, shown at 2pm SLT Monday 1st July, we are looking back to an episode about a house created by Eliza Wierwight – the Banyan House – first shown on February 1st 2016. We are showing this tribute to Eliza, a great and innovative home and furniture designer, who passed recently.

Eliza was a friend for many years. She designed wonderful builds for us at several Home and Garden Expos, and created fabulous Christmas trees and decorations which still decorate the annual Designing Worlds parties (along with others from The Looking Glass). She championed the cause of elephants mistreated in captivity, and in later years, she worked with animal rescue organisations on the north coast of Australia, where she made her home.

Through her store Patron, Eliza made some of the most beautiful homes on the Second Life grid. She didn’t release new homes very often, so the launch of a new one was always a cause for celebration. And with the release of the Banyan House, a build that was two years in the making, she excelled herself.

It’s huge, with a whole complex of rooms and levels and pools (Eliza always includes awesome water features). It features experience tools that were, for the time, used in a new and fascinating way. And it’s not only sumptuously furnished (the bathroom! the white bedroom! the lounge!), but Eliza ncluded many little details and art works that made it a very personal creation that she shared with those who purchase the house.

When a house like the is launched, representing a high level of achievement and a lot of work, we love the opportunity to explore in depth (as we did with Dutchie‘s Utrecht Villa back in September 2014 and Cain Maven’s luxurious homes in April 2020). Designing Worlds returns to Fanci’s Deep – in Tribute to MarkTwain White

In this episode, shown at 2pm SLT Monday 26th June, we are looking back to an episode on Fanci’s Deep first shown on 16th June 2014 – so just over 10 years ago – in tribute to MarkTwain White, who was a pioneer of sailing in Second Life, and who played such a vital role in working with Linden Lab on the creation of the Blake Sea.

Fanci’s Deep is an incredible region of pirates and mermaids – and this time we are exploring the underwater regions of the mer. We’ll be meeting Grace Wrigglesworth of the Safe Waters Foundation, an organisation dedicated to supporting mermaids and mermen in Second Life – and introducing newcomers to their amazing underwater world. Saffia explores an underwater tour of mainland seas and finds some fascinating evidence of a lost civilisation, while Elrik discovers the joys of underwater chariot racing!

We also talk to Nber Medici and MarkTwain White about the background to Fanci’s Deep, and how the underwater world was created in memory of the late Fanci Beebe, formerly owner of the Sailors’ Cove estate, who loved mers so well.

This is a really beautiful show – so don’t miss it!

Designing Worlds returns to Raglan Shire and the Art Walk – ten years later!

As promised last week, in this episode we are visiting Raglan Shire and the amazing Artwalk – and the episode is going live at 2pm Monday 10th June. Raglan Shire is the home of the Tinies, but artists (and visitors) of all sizes are welcome at the event, which extends over several regions and features the work of over 130 artists working in all kinds of media. The bulk of the display of 2D art is held in a giant tree with a maze of hedges on which the art is mounted. There are also sculpture gardens for 3D works and interactive exhibits.

We talk to Zayn Till, the creator of the Tinies and the community that centres around Raglan Shire, and to Linn Darkwatch, who has been closely involved with this year’s Artwalk, one of Raglan’s annual cycle of events (which include the famous Wootmas! and the Tiny carollers).

And we meet one of the artists taking part, Vic Titanium, who has created a stunning Art Tower, which is the centre of the teleportation system that he had also created – which Saffia gets to try out!

This is a fun show, with beautiful things to see, and a salute to a strong and enduring community within Second Life – so do join us, or watch on the web!

Ten years ago, we visited the fantastic Artwalk, set in the amazing tinies’ community of Raglan Shire.

In this show, we visited Raglan Shire to experience this year’s Art Walk – an extensive, multi-region annual art show including both 2D and 3D works. Take a ride on the Hedgepillar and experience close-up some amazing installations as we talk to some of the organisers about this year’s show.

And, of course, no event with tinies would be complete without a party, so the amazing tiny elephant that is Ganjo Mokeev plays us out with his band at the end of the show (which acquires an extra and possibly unexpected dinkie dancer!).

There was an amazing number of pieces on display, some by well-known artists … and others by artists at the starting of their careers. We explored the 2D and 3D art on display, spread over four different sims, in part from the back of the splendid hedgepillar (a cross between a caterpillar and topiary) created by Xavian Starsider, who joins us for part of the show.

Our hosts and tour guides for the show are Teal Freenote and Kaydge (Kage Stratten), who tells us not just about the art and the Art Walk, but also give us a fascinating insight into tiny culture.

Next week, we’ll be visiting the Raglan Shire Artwalk 2024 – a show that you can still see (until June 16th) – and both the show and the event are seriously not to be missed!

In this episode we paid the first of two visits to the fabulous Fantasy Faire, which this year raised an incredible L$30,621,089 (122,484.35 USD) by the end of the Faire!

Thanks to our roving videographers, Bain Finch and Chantal Harvey, this week you’ll be able to see the second ten Fairelands: Faireland Junction, Wistlyn Shadows, Ogham Grove, Avalon, Silevea, Thunnus Bay, Lolliocalypse, Growanda, Flamenca, and Duskfall Court. Designing Worlds looks back to SL11B Community Celebration 2014

With Fantasy Faire over for another year, we are going to take a look back this week to one of the big summer Second Life events – the Birthday! So this week, on Monday 20th May at 2pm, we will be looking back ten years to SL11B, one of the years when the residents organised the whole event.

In this show we looked at the resident builds – and also the amazing Welcome Area created by Donpatchy Dagostino – who talked about his fantastic build. We also met Tutsy Narathava, machinima artist and SL11B CC exhibitor and Harper Beresford, Website and Social Media Lead for SL11B CC who talked about their installation, created around the machinima that Tutsy has created for the Homeless propject, to littlepeppergirl and Red krasnirex who spoke about about their beautiful Belljar, to Nber Medici about her fun tugboats, and to DJ Larretronix, about his amazing Fun House.

And there was a look at the builds produced by the different branches of Prim Perfect – the Happy Hunting! site, the Blackened Mirror and the Prim Perfect build itself, as well as the opportunity to see more of the builds as captured by the camera of Wildstar Beaumont!

Designing Worlds explores Story Quest Reborn – now on the web!

In this episode, we return to a concept that we explored once before, back in 2010 – so fourteen years ago. The concept was called Story Quest, and it was created by Jena Ball, known as Jenaia Morane in Second Life, and it focused on the life and times of a person called Uncle D.

This was an exploration of a life affected by HIV/AIDS which used a non-linear narrative to encourage us not just to explore and investigate the story but also to reflect on Uncle D and the disease itself – and you had a chance to become part of the story yourself.

And now, Jenaia Morane has created a new and much expanded version of Story Quest, which is just opening to the Second Life public – and beyond.

In this episode, we travel through the Quest ourselves with Jenaia, but we are careful not to expose all its secrets – those we want our audience to come and explore for themselves!
