You have decided to go to a barber to get a professional trim for your beard, but don’t know how to pick the right one?

Finding the right barber is not an easy task, and you need to do some research beforehand to make sure he’s someone you can trust around your beard.

But how do you make sure he's good?

Read on.

1. Find a barber who specializes in beards and not just hair

Check the list of services of the barbershop (on their website or when you're there) and make sure they actually work with beards and list it as a separate service. If you just go in and ask them whether they could trim your beard, they’ll always say “Yeah, sure!”, ho,wever it doesn’t mean that they’re very experienced with beards.

Your best bet is to find a licensed master barber who has a lot of experience with beards.

As a side note, bearded barbers tend to have more experience, naturally, as they’re grooming their own beard on a daily basis and have mastered the skill. Which doesn't mean that someone without a beard (or a woman, for that matter) cannot do an excellent job, of course, but it's a bit more difficult to know for sure.

2. Try to find out if they have many bearded clients

If you see 5-6 bearded guys waiting for their turn at the barbershop, it’s a good sign! It means that it has a good reputation amongst bearded guys in your area, and that the barbers there are qualified and trustworthy.

Additionally, asking for recommendations from other bearded guys in your area is a good idea - nowadays it’s very easy and convenient to do that on social media. Instagram, for example, is a great place to start - if you like the beard style of someone who lives in the same city, don’t be shy to drop them a message to compliment them on it and to ask them if they have achieved it themselves, or if not, who their barber is. Local Facebook groups are another excellent ressource.

3. Come prepared

Do your research beforehand and let your barber know exactly what you want. Having a clear idea shows them that you respect their time and will generally get you much better results.

If you have done your research and you're still unsure of what you want exactly, tell them about it, and give them an idea about the different styles between which you’re hesitating - be ready to discuss 2-3 styles with them, so that they can point you in the right direction.

4. Talk to them - communication is essential

No matter how good a barber is, he cannot read your mind.

Explain what you want in detail, show them some photos, discuss it with them before they start working on your beard.

Be as specific as possible, especially about how much they should trim - don't just tell them "I want a little trim" but give them numbers instead. Tell them which parts of your beard you want trimmed and which ones you don't want them to touch.

5. Don’t be afraid to disagree

If you ask them for a recommendation for a new beard style, you don't need to commit - if you don't like what they're proposing, don't be shy to say "no". If you need time to think it over - let them know! You can always tell them that you need to think about it and come back another day if you decide to go ahead.

After all, it’s you who will wear your beard, not them. And you should be able to wear it with pride, not wait for it to grow back into a shape you like.

If you’re unsure of whether you’ve found the right barber, you can always start small or ask them for a haircut, for example. Like that you’d be able to observe their working style and decide for yourself whether they feel like the right fit.

6. Pay attention to the details

Is the barbershop clean and well-maintained?

Do they have regular clients?

Is your barber stopping to ask you for feedback while working on your beard (or hair)?

That’s exactly the kind of details you need to be paying attention to, and that will help you make the right decision.

A barbershop needs to be clean, period. If they’re sloppy in maintaining it, they’re probably sloppy with other things, too. No need to take risks when it comes to your beard.

Of course, a barber who has just moved from another area might not yet have regulars, but if it’s a barbershop that has existed for years and people aren’t coming back to it, it’s a bad sign.

A good barber will ask for feedback while he’s working, to make sure that both of you are on the same page - it doesn’t mean he isn’t confident, it just means that he wants to make sure that you’ll leave the barbershop happy & satisfied.

7. If something goes wrong - don’t despair

If, despite spending enough time on finding a good barber, you end up unhappy with the final result, don't despair! And most importantly, don’t just go home and shave!

Your beard will grow back and recovering from a bad trim won’t take all that long. It’s much harder to start from scratch rather than just wait for 2-3 weeks. Don't throw your hard work & dedication down the train, but instead just give it some time to recover, and try to understand why this particular barber was not the right fit for you.

Do you have any other tips about finding the right barber?

Have you already found yours? How did you find him?

Beards are awesome - we all agree on that.

However, growing the perfect beard is not an easy task, and there are a few problems you might encounter, especially if it’s your first time.

Want to know how to solve them & how to avoid the most common beard mistakes?

Read on to find out.

1. Trimming too soon

Ah, trimming! One of the most discussed topics when it comes to beard maintenance. Beard forums, blogs, and Facebook groups are full of people wanting to know whether it’s time to trim their beard, and how to do it exactly.

Should you trim or should you wait?

How often should you trim?

There is no straightforward answer to questions like these. When you first start growing your beard, it might come out patchy and uneven, so you might be compelled to trim it straight away in order to try to give it a more even look.

The truth is, this might not always be a good idea - you want to give it at least a couple of weeks or even months before you start trimming, in order to give it enough time to grow.

Trimming too soon might actually make it look patchier, and problems with texture & coverage usually resolve with time.

2. Not trimming at all

Never trimming is also not a good idea - rocking an all-natural beard can be awesome, but most beards need some maintenance in order to look at their best.

This is especially true for wilder, frizzier beards that are more difficult to tame. A good trim can make a huge difference in how your beard looks and feels.

In order to give it a well-groomed look, you need to trim from time to time. If you’re unsure about how to do it, you might want to go to a barber for the first 2-3 times, to see what they’re doing & how. They will also likely give you good tips on beard maintenance and daily grooming, as well as on different beard styles.

3. Not being patient & giving up too soon

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your beard also needs time and patience.

In the beginning, a lot of us struggle with itchiness and irritation, or with a patchy beard that’s coming out uneven, and many give up for these reasons.

But here's the deal:

In order to know whether you can grow a thick, majestic beard, for which other men will envy you, you need to give it enough time to reach its full potential.

“Enough time” for most beards means at least 2-3 months. This is enough time for most issues with thickness to resolve - length usually helps a lot with patchiness. If they don’t, you’ll have a much better idea of the beard style that will best fit the growing pattern of your beard.

As far as itchiness and irritation are concerned, these are usually tightly related to dry skin & hair. Give your beard some love in the form of beard oil and it will thank you with a healthy, lush appearance and a soft texture.

Beard oil will help you get rid of the itchiness, it will moisturize both the skin and the hair, and will make your beard easier to maintain and manage. As a result, its overall appearance will greatly improve. What’s there not to like about that?

4. Not washing your beard often enough (or washing it too often)

Eating with a full-grown beard can be a challenge, especially when it comes to ice-cream, burgers or sauces. You need to be careful when eating and you need to make sure that no food has remained trapped in your beard, and clean it promptly after that. Additionally, your beard will inevitably attract some dirt & unwanted smells, and you’ll want to make sure that it stays clean and well taken care of.

Washing your beard is best done with a beard shampoo (or soap), and not just with the same one you use for your hair. Your beard needs a gentler shampoo than your hair and if you just settle for using the same one, you risk a dry and lifeless beard.

Excessive washing is not necessary, as it will strip your beard of its natural oils that protect the follicle, and will make both your beard & skin too dry. Washing it every 2 to 3 days is ideal, and if you need to wash more often, you can do it with warm water, or with a very gentle beard shampoo, suitable for daily use.

5. Having a neckline that’s too high

Nothing kills a fabulous beard like having the wrong neckline level.

Yes, you need to keep your neck clean (if it isn’t so naturally) - letting your beard grow until it blends in with your chest hair is not very stylish. However, make sure that you’re not setting the wrong neckline level, as it will be very difficult to correct it, and you’ll need lots of patience.

To define your neckline, imagine a curved line that goes from one ear to the other, whereas its lowest point is set right above your Adam’s apple, and trim below that line.

If in doubt, your best bet would be to go to the barber the first time you do it - they’ll know exactly how to define your natural neckline, and after that you’ll be able to use that as a guideline.

6. Not taking care of dry skin & hair

Dry skin and hair can be a disaster even for the best beard, and they need to be promptly taken care of. If you let your skin dry out, it will become irritated and flaky, and this can result in the dreaded condition called beardruff, a.k.a. dandruff of the beard. Moreover, to boost healthy, natural growth, your skin & the follicles need to be well-hydrated & nourished.

The best way to moisturize your beard & skin is to use beard oil - it will deeply hydrate your skin, relieving itchiness and irritation, and will protect your beard from external damage, such as dry air, pollution, the sun, and so on.

7. Not combing/brushing your beard properly

Yes, you actually need to comb your beard in order to achieve the best results. This is necessary in order to keep your beard looking tidy and neat, to train it to grow in the desired direction (downwards rather than outwards), and to distribute evenly the natural oils that your skin produces and keep your beard properly moisturized.

After taking a shower or washing your face, let your beard dry a bit before combing it - if you do it while it’s wet, you risk hair loss.

You can use a towel to dry it, or alternatively use a blow dryer. Apply beard oil after that, and then comb your beard thoroughly (but not too aggressively).

You can first comb from the neck outwards, and after that comb the beard downwards to give it a good shape. Combing it “teaches” it to grow in a specific direction, so use that to your advantage to keep the area around the mouth clean and to help your beard grow downwards.

When combing your beard, don’t use a basic plastic brush or comb. Instead, invest in a wooden comb that is specifically designed for beard care, or, alternatively, a metal one. If you prefer getting a brush (the better solution for longer beards), we advise investing in a boar’s hair brush, which works well with all hair types.

8. Touching your face & beard too much

Touching your face is a bad habit that you need to get rid of, for the sake of the health of your skin, and the same goes for touching your beard.

You can provoke an acne breakout on the skin under your beard too, unfortunately. Besides, playing with your beard too much and pulling it can lead to hair loss, or mess with its growth pattern or shape. So just leave it alone during the day, and only let your loved ones touch it (from time to time) to admire its softness.

9. Not using beard care products

Yeah, it would be easier if we could just use the same products for our beards as we do for our hair, but it’s unfortunately not really wise to do so.

Your beard has specific needs, and therefore specific products that correspond to these needs. Not using a beard soap or shampoo to wash your beard, but instead using a regular one for hair, might result in an overall dryness, as hair shampoos tend to be more aggressive.

10. Neglecting the moustache

Many of us tend to concentrate on the beard and not pay enough attention to the moustache. In order to achieve the perfect look, however, you need to comb it, shape it and trim it from time to time.

Combing the moustache is best done with a fine-toothed comb, which will help you detangle it and keep it clean and well-groomed. Additionally, combing your moustache will help you keep it out of your mouth by influencing its direction of growing.

Trimming it is also necessary, past a certain length, and can be done with moustache scissors. Make sure not to trim too much.

Styling the moustache can definitely improve the overall appearance of your beard, and there are plenty of different moustache styles that you could try out. The most important thing, however, is to keep it healthy and well-maintained, and to not let it dry. The best way to do that would be by applying beard oil or beard balm to it.

The bottom line?

In order to have an epic beard, you need to invest some time and efforts into growing, grooming and maintaining it. Your beard needs love and patience, and if you take good care of it, you can achieve amazing results, which you will be proud of.

In the Spotlight: Coconut Oil, an Outstanding Ingredient for a Fabulous Beard & Hair

Coconut oil is now hugely popular among health-conscious people and is widely used as a cooking oil. But did you know that it can also be used externally, and will have an amazing effect on your skin, hair, and beard?

Coconut oil can be used on all types of hair (even on thin & damaged hair) and is tolerated well by sensitive skin. It has a light texture and is solid at room temperature, however, it will easily melt in your hands.

Because of its many benefits, we’ve decided to make it one of the main ingredients in our beard balm, and our customers love it.

1. Helps fight dandruff, beardruff & itchiness

Coconut oil is extremely beneficial in fighting dandruff, beardruff, and itchiness, especially when they’re provoked or aggravated by dry skin. And they often are.

Shampoos and most cosmetic products aimed at controlling dandruff contain harsh chemicals, which usually solve the underlying condition, but only treat the symptoms. That’s why a lot of people have resorted to using coconut oil as a natural & healthy alternative to help combat dandruff - it is a simple and effective solution that costs a little and helps a lot.

Beardruff (which, you’ve guessed it, is just dandruff of the beard) is a very similar condition - it is characterized by dry, scaly skin, and is often accompanied by itchiness.

Itchiness is very typical when you first start growing a beard, and in order to avoid it, you need to properly hydrate & nourish your beard and the skin under it. When you first start growing, the hairs are hard and the skin dries very quickly.

Add harsh weather on top of that, and you’ll get a very unpleasant combination. Luckily, this problem is easily solved with some proper beard care, such as a good beard balm - coconut oil deeply moisturizes both your skin and hair and therefore helps resolve any issues provoked by excessive dryness. Combined with the other amazing ingredients that we’re using, such as Shea Butter, Mango Kernel Butter, Cocoa Butter, Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil and more, our beard balms provide top-notch protection and hydration.

2. Conditions & moisturizes the hair, leaving it soft & lush

Because of its lipid structure, coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft through the cuticle (the outer layer), nourishing it deeply and improving its appearance and long-term health.

Moreover, coconut oil deeply hydrates the hair follicle & helps retain moisture, unlike many chemical conditioners, which will only make your hair or beard appear hydrated but do not do anything to actually moisturize it.

Applying a beard oil that contains coconut oil on your hair and beard will leave them well-conditioned and soft, and will give them a lush appearance.

Additionally, your hair & beard will look thicker, fuller and shinier, without feeling greasy. But remember - a little goes a long way! You need only a little bit of beard balm (or coconut oil) to feel its effects. If in doubt, start with less and apply more as needed. This way it will also last you for longer.

3. Tames unruly beards & hair

Many men struggle with a frizzy beard, and if your beard is prone to frizziness, this will directly affect the way it looks, making it appear messy and not well-maintained, even if you have a solid grooming routine. In fact, most men’s beards are on the curlier side, even if their hair is straight, and curls tend to be much more difficult to manage than straight hair.

That’s why we recommend taking care of frizz straight away. Nothing boosts your confidence like improving the way your beard looks, and our customers have experienced that first hand.

Humidity is the enemy of beards that are already prone to frizz, as it will only make it worse. If the weather is humid where you live, stock up on beard balm to make sure your beard always looks at its best.

Coconut oil is an excellent ingredient to help you combat frizziness and to tame a wild beard, even in cases of excessive air humidity. It has been used by women for many years, and we see no reason why men shouldn’t benefit from its amazing properties. It will also help you detangle and comb your beard, which will, in turn, make it easier to style.

Coconut oil on its own can feel rather heavy on the beard if you leave it in, which is why we have combined it with other high-quality ingredients, each one of them having its own amazing benefits.

Trimming is also an important step when trying to tame a beard that looks particularly wild, and if you combine it with the right beard care products, its effect can be impressive. If you’re unsure of how to trim your beard, you can go to a barber for the first couple of times - they’ll know exactly how to take care of your beard.

4. Prevents split ends & breakage

If you’re struggling with split ends - especially for longer beards, this is a very common occurrence - rest assured: coconut oil can help with that, too. It repairs & nourishes hair from inside out, which is why it’s so effective in preventing damage.

As it conditions & moisturizes the hair, it makes it much less prone to drying out and breakage, and to have split ends. Using a beard balm containing coconut oil will ensure that you have a healthy beard that is damage-free.

5. And last but not least, did you know that coconut oil promotes healthy hair growth?

Because of its outstanding benefits described above, coconut oil boosts your hair & beard’s health, thus promoting growth. A tired, dry beard simply cannot grow as well as a deeply moisturized, well-nourished beard, and this is why the results from using products that contain coconut oil can be outstanding.

Moreover, because of taming frizz & improving texture, your beard will appear thicker, and with some good drying strategies combined with a good styling agent, such as a high-quality beard balm, it can also appear longer (depending on the hair type & style).

By keeping your beard hydrated & well-maintained, you’ll improve its general health, and in turn, it will reward you with amazing looks & a thick texture.

Remember: a healthy beard is a happy beard!

Beard oil has appeared on the market in the past few years, and you have probably wondered whether you really need it to grow a healthy and nice-looking beard.

When growing a beard, a lot of men experience itchiness and irritation, accompanied by an unpleasant condition called beardruff (dandruff of the beard). Additionally, their beard can look dry and lifeless. To change all of that and get a fabulous beard that feels soft & silky and looks lush and full of life, beard oil is a must.

Beard oil is made of several carrier oils mixed together, plus fragrances. Most beard oils only use 3-4 of the most popular carrier oils.

Instead, we have spent a lot of time researching what’s best for your beard & skin (and even hair!) and have created a unique blend of 9 carrier oils, each one having amazing properties.

Why is that necessary, you might wonder?

And can’t everyone create their own blend at home?

Truth is, you can use any of the different carrier oils as a beard oil, for example, olive oil, or sweet almond, or you can make your own mix. However, in this way, you won’t be getting the full benefits of the multiple oils working together. Read on to find out what these are.

Buying all ingredients and mixing them together at home is complicated and expensive for another reason - you’ll be buying big quantities of oils while using only a little bit of each for your blend. High-quality organic carrier oils can be quite expensive, and they’ll all expire long before you get the chance to finish them.

For that reason, we have created our unique beard oil, mixing together 9 carrier oils of the highest quality.

But do you really need beard oil?

From personal experience, yes, yes and YES.

Yes, that’s right - beard oil can be an excellent hair oil too!

The best time to use beard oil is after washing your face or after taking a shower, while your beard & skin are still moist. It will help lock moisture in, preventing dryness and itchiness.

A little goes a long way!

You don’t need to use a lot of beard oil to experience its benefits. Just a few drops are enough.

Put a few drops in your palm and rub them in your beard, from the base to the ends. Apply what’s left to your face and even to your hair.

Our recommendations for the amounts to use:

1-month beard - 4-8 drops daily.

1 - 3 months beard - 10-14 drops daily.

3-6 months beard - 15-25 drops daily.

6+ months- 30+ drops daily (depending on the length).

Ingredients

Our beard oils contain only the highest quality natural ingredients. We have created an outstanding blend of 9 ingredients (unlike most other beard oils, that only contain 3-4 of the most well-known oils), and we’re proud of it.

Our oils contain the following:

Although beards have been around for as long as the humankind has existed, their popularity has noticeably increased in the past few years. Chances are if you’re reading this, you also have a beard, or plan to grow one soon.

And you might be wondering whether a beard makes you more attractive to women.

Read on to find out.

A beard makes you more noticeable and gives the impression of masculinity, strength, and power. That’s why men with beards are perceived as more masculine, and therefore as better potential long-term partners, according to recent studies - on a subconscious level, women find that they can protect and care for the family better than clean-shaved men.

Longer beards are associated with social dominance and maturity, which are both desired traits for women looking for a stable relationship.

And that’s not all.

Beards are also perceived as a sign of good health, and indirectly with virility. Men who can grow a full beard are perceived as healthy and strong, which makes them more desirable sexual partners.

At the same time, men with stubble were seen as more attractive for a one-night stand, according to the same series of studies. Stubble may help draw an image of someone who is playful and masculine at the same time, and who could have fun for a couple of hours without imposing ideas of a common future. And sometimes that’s all women want.

Of course, every woman’s preferences will be different, but overall tendencies are significant enough to have scientists analyze them with great attention. Subconscious preferences are not always easy to identify - some women might not even be aware of the fact that they like men with beards better until their significant other grows a beard, and they suddenly start finding them even more attractive than before. Or until enough men around them grow beards so that they can compare between the two.

However, growing a beard is not the only thing you need to do.

You also need to know how to care for it: having a good daily grooming routine in place will guarantee that you always look your best. We all know that looking good is one of the components to feeling confident and prepared for the challenges that you’ll be facing every day.

Well-groomed men are preferred by women, as they look for men who know how to take good care of themselves, without appearing vain or shallow. Growing a fabulous beard and knowing how to groom it well is perceived as sexy, and is a bold statement on its own.

The bottom line?

Women love men who aren’t afraid of being noticed.

Beard Oil vs. Beard Balm

Should you be using beard oil or beard balm? Or both? Beard balm has a good hold that will make styling your beard easier - it is especially good for unruly, frizzy beards that need fixation. It has a thicker texture and will give you a more lasting shine. Find out more about beard balm and whether it’s the right product for you and your beard.

We’ve previously covered beard oil and why it’s a good idea to use one, but we’re sure you have already wondered about the difference between beard balm and beard oil.

We know that it’s not always easy to choose between the myriad of products that you can find on the market, and we’re sure you want the best for your beard, so if you want to know whether you should be using beard oil or beard balm, read on.

Styling your beard

Beard balm has a thicker texture and can also be used to style your beard, so if you have a preference for a beard style that needs some fixation, beard balm is the right choice. Additionally, it helps with unruly and frizzy beards that are difficult to style, so if you have problems with that, you might want to give beard balm a try.

Moisturizing your beard and skin

Beard balm is used to moisturize and nourish your beard and the skin below it, and in this way, it is similar to beard oil. Both products will condition your beard and will improve its appearance and the way it feels, and both products will ease itchiness and irritated skin. However, if your skin and beard are excessively dry, you might want to try using beard balm, as it will serve as a protective layer that will moisturize them for a longer time and protect them well against harsh weather conditions (dry and cold weather makes the skin and the hairs very rough).

The final touch

The choice between beard balm and beard oil also depends on how you’d like your beard to look after you apply the product. Beard balm will give your beard a lasting shine, while beard oil is quick to absorb and will give you a less glossy appearance. As this is a matter of personal preference, pick beard balm if you like your beard to stay shiny throughout the day, or beard oil, if you’d prefer it to have a more matte appearance.

How to use beard balm

Take a small amount of beard balm (approximately the size of a dime), rub it between your hands and distribute it evenly through your beard. If your beard is long, comb it after having applied the balm.

Beard balm is best applied on a slightly wet beard, so it’s a good idea to do it after taking a shower or washing your face, as a part of your morning routine.

Can beard oil and beard balm be used together?

If you’d like to try using both products at the same time, you can do that, and reap the benefits of each. You just need to be careful with the quantities, as it’s easy to overdo it if you’re combining them, so use very little of both and see how your beard feels to the touch. Remember, a little goes a long way!

A lot of men who start growing a beard do not know whether they need to use a beard oil at all, as it is a relatively new product on the market. However, if you appreciate your beard - and we’re sure you do - you’d want to take good care of it, and beard oil is one of the best ways to do that.

Beard Oil is a blend of carrier and essential oils, and it helps you maintain a lush and healthy beard that will look and feel fabulous.

Why use Beard Oil?

In the early stages of growing a beard, most men experience itchiness and irritation, and a lot of them decide to just continue shaving for that reason. Beardruff is essentially dandruff of the beard and is very common when you first start growing a beard - the skin under feels rough and flaky and small patches fall off. Very annoying, right?

Beard Oil can greatly help with that, as it will moisturize and nourish your skin and will heal irritation and dryness. It will keep beardruff at bay, and very shortly you will see a noticeable difference in how your facial skin feels and looks.

It will also moisturize and condition the hair, giving your beard a silky, healthy appearance, and make it soft and smooth.

The different carrier oils, such as avocado oil, grapeseed oil, and coconut oil, will enhance beard growth, and we have selected them in order to give you the best possible results. They will also help detangle and style fizzy and unruly beards, making them easier to comb and to manage. You will also see much less split ends than usual.

In addition to that, Beard Oil protects your beard against harsh weather conditions (such as excessive sunlight, dry and cold weather) and air pollution.

As a bonus, our Beard Oil smells heavenly! Its scent is delicate and will not overpower perfume - instead, it will just add one last touch of manliness.

How to use Beard Oil?

You can use Beard Oil daily, after washing your face, as a part of your morning routine (f.e. right after taking a shower). This is the best moment, as your pores will be open and can absorb the oil quickly.
