For two years, Anne-Marie Slaughter served in the State Department as Hillary Clinton's director of policy planning, the first woman to hold that post. When she left, she could have quietly announced that it was time to return to her position as a professor of foreign policy at Princeton University. Instead, she wrote an article for The Atlantic called "Why Women Still Can't Have It All," a public declaration of her struggle to reconcile her flourishing career with her desire to be a present and engaged parent. The essay went viral. "The reaction was so overwhelming that it created a platform I never expected to have," says Slaughter, now the CEO of New America, a public policy think tank. We spoke to her about her new book, Unfinished Business: Women Men Work Family, and the changes she believes we need to make as a nation. "I began my career believing that women could have careers and families in the same way and at the same levels that men do," she said. "I still believe that, but I see the toll it takes on everyone who tries to do both intensely. I want a society that values both work and the deep satisfactions of loving and caring for others."
