On the beaches of Máncora, Peru, every stranded turtle carries information that could help protect the next one. Marine biologist Carmen González walks the coast, records what she finds, works with fishing communities, and helps people understand how their choices affect threatened marine species.

Her documentary follows a conservation practice that combines research with relationships. The measurements matter, but so do the fishermen, volunteers, hotel workers, and neighbors who learn how to respond when a turtle is caught or a nest is discovered.

A life shaped by animals and marine biology

Carmen says she has been interested in animals for as long as she can remember. That interest led her to study marine biology and eventually to conservation work on Peru’s northern coast.

In Ayangue, Ecuador, the sea is livelihood, memory, and possibility. Ambrosio Yagual grew up in this coastal community, learned artisanal diving as a child, and made his living as a fisherman. A life formed by the coast

Ambrosio describes traveling to other ports when local fishing conditions required it. The work connected his family to the ocean, but it also exposed them to danger. After violence entered his family’s life, he stopped returning to the same fishing routine and focused more fully on diving and tourism.

The change was practical, but it was also personal. The diving knowledge he had carried since childhood became the foundation for a different future.

Building the Christ of the Abyss

During a week of diving with a visitor, Ambrosio shared the places he knew around Ayangue. The visitor saw both the beauty of the area and the damage people had caused, then proposed placing a statue of Christ beneath the water.

Ambrosio brought the idea to community leaders. When plans arrived for a base weighing roughly four tons, he made calls, raised local support, and helped organize the work. The base was built by hand. Two boats then towed it to Islote El Pelado, where the team lowered it into place facing the port.

The operation was more than a construction project. It gave the community a visible point of connection between faith, tourism, diving, and the health of the surrounding water.

From underwater landmark to marine protection

The documentary traces what followed: another vessel was placed underwater, and the area around El Pelado was later declared a marine reserve. Mooring buoys helped keep boats from anchoring directly on the reefs. Ambrosio says tourism grew as visitors came to dive, see the statue, and experience the marine reserve.

He also describes an increase in marine life around the site, including manta rays and a whale shark sighting. Those observations are part of his lived account of how the area changed over time.

Stewardship means returning

Creating the statue was only the beginning. Ambrosio, his children, and friends have repeatedly removed, repaired, repainted, and returned it after damage. That ongoing maintenance is a quieter form of heroism: showing up after the attention has moved elsewhere.

On the beach at Ligüiqui, Ecuador, a lesson in breathing becomes a lesson in belonging. Marine biologist and freediving instructor Sebastián Hernández is helping children build confidence in the water while reconnecting with the knowledge, safety, and marine heritage of their community.

From marine biology to freediving instruction

Sebastián was born in Punta Arenas, Chile, and grew up in Santiago before studying marine biology in Coquimbo. His academic path later took him to Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, and his work brought him to Manta, Ecuador. Alongside that scientific training, he developed his freediving practice and became an instructor.

For Sebastián, freediving is not about spectacle. It is a practical way to understand the body, move safely in the ocean, and build a deeper relationship with marine life.

Teaching water confidence in Ligüiqui

Ligüiqui is a rural coastal community with deep ties to the sea and the history of the Manteño-Huancavilca people. Many local families fish, and knowledge of breath-hold diving has passed from one generation to the next. Sebastián’s workshops bring formal technique to that lived knowledge.

The children begin on land with breathing exercises and yoga. They learn how masks, snorkels, and fins work. Only then do they enter shallow water, where they practice calmly and gradually.
