During the pandemic, women facing anxiety, depression, and domestic violence needed help at the same moment that ordinary support systems became harder to reach. Doménica Cobo called a friend and asked a direct question: could they gather psychologists and offer care through the tools people still had?

That first effort helped about 60 people. It became Juntas por Ellas, or Together for Women, an Ecuadorian nonprofit focused on women’s political, social, economic, and health needs. Its central project connects women with accessible psychological support.

A call to serve women

Doménica grew up in Cuenca in a loving home and attended a girls’ school where she learned the value of cooperation and safe environments for women. As a teenager, she was invited to represent her city as Queen of Cuenca, a role linked with social responsibility.

The experience strengthened a feeling she already carried: there was more work to be done. Although she studied law and works as a lawyer, her deeper passion became helping women move from victimhood toward control over their own lives.

Mental health without shame

Doménica describes mental health care as both unaffordable for many people and burdened by taboo. Some are ashamed to ask for psychological help. Others simply cannot pay for it. After the pandemic, anxiety and depression intensified the need.

Mental health may be the priority of health, and it has to be taken as a main responsibility and goal for public policy.

Juntas por Ellas treats care as something people should be able to reach without physical or social barriers. The organization has used remote service, volunteer expertise, and improved technology to extend that access.

From a WhatsApp idea to hundreds of patients

What began as an emergency response developed into a growing service. In the documentary, Doménica describes a team of more than 20 psychologists and many additional volunteers. Together they had supported more than 800 patients by that point.

A grant helped the team improve its platform so psychologists, patients, and support staff could use the service more comfortably. Doménica is not a psychologist, so she listens to the clinical team, reads, asks for feedback, and focuses on building the structure that lets specialists help more people.

What began with help for eight children grew to serve dozens. Over time, a dream of rehabilitation became an inclusive school offering education, physical support, practical workshops, and the skills children need for greater independence.

A need that could not be ignored

María Luz describes seeing children convulsing, falling, abandoned, or locked away without treatment. Misunderstanding and stigma left some families believing disability was a punishment or something to hide. She responded by looking for specialists, information, and people willing to help.

Ángel Ramón Solanía supported early work with children and helped connect families with neurological, audiological, surgical, and physical-therapy care. Later, Ignacio de la Romaña helped make a school possible, while architect Mario Lara Orosa contributed the design.

Persistence through her own injuries

María Luz’s work continued even after a serious accident injured the lower part of her body and affected her sight. She had previously provided some rehabilitation herself because resources were scarce. The injury forced a change, but it did not end the mission.

Education, rehabilitation, and independence

The sea is immense, and a whale shark does not need to surface for air. Finding one off Peru’s northern coast requires patience, local knowledge, and an understanding of where its food moves through the water. Alejandra Mendoza has spent nearly a decade building that knowledge.

Through the World Shark Project, Alejandra studies an endangered species while working with fishing communities and government agencies. Her goal is not only to collect biological data. It is to turn evidence into protection.

From sea turtles to whale sharks

Alejandra began working with the conservation organization Ecoceanica during her professional training. She first supported sea-turtle work, then joined a new whale shark project. The opportunity matched her long-standing fascination with sharks.

At the time, fear shaped many encounters. Some fishermen believed whale sharks were dangerous and tried to drive them away with fuel or oil. The research team had to replace myth with observation and trust.

How researchers find a whale shark

Field days begin with gear, coffee, and a decision about whether recent sightings point north toward Punta Mero or south toward Punta Sal. The boat moves slowly, often within a few miles of shore. Researchers watch for a dorsal fin, the tip of a tail, or a dark shape below the surface.

Whale sharks feed on zooplankton. As sunlight changes where plankton gathers in the water column, a feeding shark may come close enough to the surface to be seen. The team approaches from behind, never cutting across the animal’s path.

Gentle movement and useful photographs

Alejandra reads the shark’s speed and behavior before entering the water. She swims calmly and photographs the animal without crowding it. Measurements of the dorsal fin can help researchers estimate total length, an important technique when an animal may grow to six, seven, or even eleven meters.

Individual photographs and repeated observations create a record of who is visiting, how large the animals are, and how the population may be changing.

Research that helped change policy

The team’s early data supported work by Peru’s Ministry of Production and its marine research authorities. Whale shark fishing and the commercialization of products from the species are now prohibited. Alejandra continues working toward practical guidelines for responsible wildlife tourism.

It does not stop in collecting biological and ecological data. We also use this data to do management.

Changing a community’s relationship with sharks

The project’s most visible change may be in the fishing community. People who once feared whale sharks now help report sightings, support research, and see responsible tourism as an opportunity. Children have begun imagining futures in marine science because they see researchers returning year after year.

Alejandra welcomes those conversations. When local parents ask how a child might study the ocean or find a related career, she shares her contact information and offers guidance. Conservation becomes a pathway, not only a restriction.
