Alex LeVesque is the founder of the Automotive Mentoring Group (AMG), a nonprofit that works to counter gang violence in the city of Chicago, Illinois. The organization recruits gang members from across the city and teaches them the skills needed to build careers as auto mechanics, thus giving a chance at reform to those who would otherwise likely fall victim to violence in the streets.

AMG provides these services free of charge. What Alex does receive in return is the knowledge that he is saving lives, providing disenfranchised young men with an avenue to become integral parts of society.

What Inspired Alex LeVesque to Start Automotive Mentoring Group?

Alex claims that philanthropy was not something that was instilled within him growing up. Instead, it was “sort of a God-given instinct.” Being a resident of Chicago, he has seen first-hand the detrimental impact of gang violence. According to NBC Chicago, 2021 alone saw 3,561 shooting incidents and 797 homicides in the city. The majority of these homicides were the results of “conflicts between rival gangs.”

“I’m very mad about everything I see,” Alex remarked. “I’m mad about these Black and Brown boys killing each other over shoelaces. I’m mad about these drive-by shootings… I want to be that alternative.”

What Makes Alex LeVesque an Everyday Hero?

With nearly three decades of experience in the automotive industry, Alex doesn’t need to operate AMG to make a living. But his motivation isn’t money: it’s righting the wrongs that he sees in the world. Currently, there are over 100,000 active gang members in Chicago. Where the system fails in implementing social change, everyday heroes like Alex pick up the slack. He is a beacon of hope for people who wish to escape a violent environment.

Alex LeVesque Provides Mental Health Resources, Education, and Job Opportunities

Alex does more than just teach his mentees to be mechanics. He addresses the root causes of gang violence. Crime in general has historically stemmed from inadequate access to resources. Because of this, Alex makes every effort to give his students the means to become successful. From providing food to mental health resources, he leaves no need unattended to.

“Once I started trying to teach these guys, I realized that a lot of the reason that their behavior was so erratic was that they were dealing with pent up trauma that was never addressed in their earlier lives,” Alex said. “We’ve made it possible for them to have some one-on-one time with a psychologist.”

To inspire his mentees, he takes them on field trips that expose them to what life can be like once they graduate. Each trip is typically to one of AMG’s 82 hiring partners, who are willing to give jobs to anyone who successfully completes the program. 

In addition to hiring partners, AMG has relationships with several alternative high schools, which allow mentees to earn their GEDs. Alex is a firm believer in the importance of education, as it can only make his students more hireable. About 90% of them do not have a high school diploma, which severely impacts their ability to climb the social ladder. 

Considering the harsh conditions that many AMG mentees were raised in, it makes sense that they often view success as a foreign concept. However, their time in the program opens their minds to what they can achieve.

“The only way that you can truly be successful in changing what a person does is changing the way they think,” Alex commented. “And the only way you can change what a person thinks is through exposure, exposing them to many things so that they can dream bigger.”

Alex LeVesque on the Importance of Fatherhood

According to Alex, a major contributing factor to young people joining gangs is the lack of a father figure. In fact, about 95% of his students grew up without fathers. For them, Alex tries to take on this role, leading by example so that one day they will become caring parents themselves. Some of them are already parents.

“Yes, I’m trying to make them into car builders,” he asserted. “But there’s a much bigger picture than that. I’m trying to create human beings that contribute positively to society. I am trying to build better mothers and fathers… I have 17 year-old kids in the program who have two year-old sons and daughters.”

Aside from Alex, AMG has nine other volunteer mentors. Having other role models is important for Alex, as some students may need support that he cannot give. With a variety of recruits comes a variety of personalities and needs.

What Has Alex LeVesque Accomplished Through AMG?

AMG has helped hundreds upon hundreds of young men and women find employment in the automotive industry. These mechanics may have otherwise lost their lives to gang violence. Alex is therefore not only saving lives, but he is breaking the all-too-common cycle of gang members not being able to escape the lifestyle.

One specific story that sticks out to Alex is the story of “Otis,” who by the time he entered the program, had already served two years for armed robbery. As he progressed through the program, however, he became committed to reform. Currently, he is a regional manager for O’Reilly Auto Parts.

“It was one of those moments where I looked up at the heavens, and I said, ‘Lord, I know you don’t work on the point system, but I hope that’s good for something,’” Alex stated.

When asked who he considers to be heroes, Alex said, “People like Muhammad Ali or Martin Luther King: they changed the world. They changed countries in terms of their mindset and the kinds of ideals they had just for humans in terms of how we’re supposed to get along and treat each other.”

On the definition of a hero, he commented that “A hero is someone who can give a hand to someone who has a lot less. Not to say I have a lot, but the little I do have, I want to be able to share it.”

“All of us are heroes in some way to someone,” he added. “In the world that we live in… everybody is always telling us that we should be mad. But nothing ever beats kindness. Whenever someone is unfair to me, my sarcastic way of dealing with that is being as kind as possible.”

“When you have these gang members from across the city that are working together in harmony, and they have no problems with each other, no gang fights, no shootings… Over time they begin to understand that there’s no difference between them,” he concluded. “So, if we can be friends here in this environment, why can’t we be friends outside of this environment?”

When Sunniya was born, her family celebrated the arrival of a son, the firstborn child they believed would carry the family name with pride. Yet from an early age, Sunniya felt disconnected from that identity. In classrooms divided by gender, she often felt trapped, studying how boys walked and spoke so she could blend in. Every movement, every word, became an act of survival.

“I thought I was in the wrong box,” she later said.

By high school, that silent struggle had become exhausting. Teachers began to notice her pain, offering small moments of understanding. But even with that kindness, the question that haunted her remained. Who am I, really?

The Moment That Changed Everything

When she entered university, Sunniya hoped for freedom. Instead, she encountered one of the most humiliating moments of her life. During an exam, a professor confronted her in front of the class, questioning her gender and identity. He pulled at her tie, leaving both a physical scar and a deeper emotional one.

That day, she left the campus in tears and locked herself in her room. For six months, she did not study, work, or speak much to anyone. “It wasn’t just pain,” she recalled. “It took all of my confidence.”

In her final year of fashion design, Sunniya heard about auditions for a community theater project called Ti Sre Dhun, or The Third Tune. The play was written and performed by transgender artists. Sunniya went to the audition expecting to design costumes. Instead, she was asked to perform.

When she took the stage, something inside her came alive. Her performance earned her a place in the cast, and soon she was performing across Pakistan and around the world. The production reached international audiences at universities such as Yale and Texas, as well as cultural centers in Oslo and Lahore.

For the first time, Sunniya felt seen. On stage, she introduced herself to the world as a transgender woman.

Her family was in the audience. Her mother’s response was painful. “This is not you,” she said. “This is just a character.” What should have been a triumphant moment became one filled with heartbreak. Still, Sunniya chose to keep going.

Learning to Serve Her Community

The success of Ti Sre Dhun brought new opportunities. Sunniya joined NAS Pakistan, the country’s first community-based organization focused on transgender rights. There she learned management, leadership, and how to advocate for others.

“NAS gave me wings,” she said. “They helped me find myself.”

Her role allowed her to serve at the grassroots level, working directly with marginalized people. For the first time, she could see how compassion and structure could bring change. She also discovered her fascination with skincare and makeup, realizing that self-care could be both healing and empowering.

When the project funding ended in 2018, Sunniya was once again left without work. Many organizations closed, leaving community members without income. She began applying for jobs, but doors kept closing. Employers saw her education and experience yet refused to hire her once they learned about her gender identity.

When Doors Closed, She Built Her Own

With few options left, Sunniya turned to performing at weddings as a dancer, the only profession many transgender women in Pakistan are allowed to pursue. “Being a dancing girl is not easy,” she said. “But I refused to become something I wasn’t.”

Then the pandemic arrived. Events stopped, and income vanished overnight. But that silence gave her time to think.

One day, a friend visiting from another city asked Sunniya to recommend a clinic for laser hair removal. She booked an appointment for her friend, but when they arrived, the doctor told them, “This clinic is for normal people.”

Those words stayed with her. That one sentence became her mission.

The Birth of Inclusive

Sunniya decided to create the kind of clinic that should have existed all along — a place where everyone, regardless of gender, could receive safe, professional, and respectful care.

Teaching Herself to Paint

With a spark lit inside her, Theresa dedicated herself to mastering the craft of painting and customizing cars. She spent countless evenings locked in the paint booth, experimenting, learning, and perfecting her style. Over time, her work began appearing on magazine covers and show vehicles, cementing her reputation as one of the most talented custom painters in the industry.

At first, Theresa focused on delivering exactly what customers wanted. But as she grew more confident, she began to add her own creative touch, trusting her instincts to know when to push boundaries. This was when she started leaving her unmistakable signature on each project—designs that told stories, evoked emotion, and turned vehicles into moving art pieces.

Off-Roading and the Call of Baja

Beyond the shop, Theresa found freedom behind the wheel. Trips with her family to Baja, Mexico, opened her eyes to the magic of off-roading. The camaraderie, the thrill of adventure, and the challenge of navigating rugged terrain became more than just hobbies—they became a way of life.

Breaking Barriers as a Woman in Motorsports

In an industry often dominated by men, Theresa has always stood out—not just because she is a woman, but because she has consistently brought her A-game. She credits her parents with instilling the mindset that nothing is off limits. She never saw herself as “different” for being female in the shop or on the track.

In fact, the doubt she sometimes faced only fueled her drive. If someone said she couldn’t do it, her response was always the same: Watch me.

The Real Deal Revolution

One of the most important chapters in Theresa’s journey came when she met her best friend and collaborator, Jessi Combs. Together, they shared a vision to create something bigger than themselves. That vision became Real Deal Revolution, an organization dedicated to empowering women through skilled trades, custom design, and motorsports.

Theresa and Jessi worked side by side—teaching welding, pinstriping, fabrication, and other hands-on skills. Their mission was to revolutionize the perception of women in trades and to show young girls that they were capable of so much more than society often told them.

The name “Real Deal” wasn’t just a catchy phrase. It represented the grit, authenticity, and drive that both women embodied. Tragically, Jessi passed away in 2019 while chasing land-speed records, but her spirit continues to fuel the mission. For Theresa, carrying on Real Deal Revolution is not just a tribute to Jessi but a calling she knows she must pursue.

Carrying the Torch Forward

After Jessi’s passing, Theresa admits there was a period of doubt. Should she continue? Could she keep the vision alive? But the answer became clear as more people rallied around her. She realized that the work they had started together was too important to stop.

Today, Theresa continues to lead workshops, events, and community projects that empower the next generation. Real Deal Revolution remains a thriving platform where women can learn, create, and discover their potential in skilled trades and motorsports.

Dr. Daniel Headrick offers hope for recovery to the people that are suffering with substance abuse issues.

His message is shockingly simple, but rooted in science and his 37 years of experience: “You’re not stuck with the same brain you have right now, your brain can heal.”

Dr. Headrick would know, he has detoxed over 17,000 people throughout his decades-long career in addiction medicine. On a personal level, he’s intimately aware, as a former addict himself.

“Twenty percent of the U.S. population is genetically set up to have this unusual attraction to alcohol and other drugs too,” he stated, noting that his entire family regularly drank.

Spiraling into addiction

Dr. Headrick got into medicine at the urging of his grandmother, who was the only one in the family that did not regularly imbibe.

He began his career as a family medicine doctor in a rural area of California, where right out of med school, he was thrust into a demanding position that saw him wearing many hats.

“I was delivering babies at home, covering the ER, the ICU, and reading my own X-rays and EKGs,” he said about his responsibilities as a young doctor in an understaffed hospital.

Dr. Headrick noted that despite taking care of alcoholics and addicts during that hectic time at the beginning of his career, he knew that he had a “very strong attraction to alcohol,” which he likened to “magic.”

He quickly became a functioning alcoholic and substance abuser that thought he could balance his high-octane career with a spiraling addiction.

“Doing drugs long enough, you become the drug and lose track of who you are,” he remarked.

His nightmare scenario happened on a night that he had been drinking during his off-day, but was called in the middle of the night to perform an emergency surgery on a young man who had been stabbed.

During the five-hour long surgery, Dr. Headrick could smell alcohol in his mask, and despite managing to save the man’s life, he was still drunk when he drove home and crashed into a telephone pole.

Even after that wake-up call, he didn’t stop. Dr. Headrick recalled that there were two additional drug and booze-fueled car wrecks that happened in the years that followed.

“You continue to take your chemical despite all of the negative consequences,” he commented. “Negative consequences don’t stop you. That’s when you crossed the line into becoming an addict.”

Hope for recovery: A new career path

Dr. Headrick said that when he finally went into recovery, he was very motivated and took the program seriously, following the steps to the letter.

A year into being sober, he got into addiction medicine after being inspired by his own personal journey with substance abuse.

“I was a healer and I was a patient at the same time, I was right with them,” he pointed out.

Dr. Headrick realized that for the first three months of sobriety, which seem to be the most difficult, he’s talking to the substance and not the patient that he’s treating.

“Technically you’re under the influence of your drug for the first 90 days,” which he says is evident in the functional brain scans that show dark areas of the brain that are “shut down and depleted” in substance abusers.

Dr. Headrick noted that it usually takes three to four months to take a brain scan that is fairly close to the “real” person and not the substance.

“You’re not stuck with the same brain you have right now for the rest of your life,” he stated. “That really gives them hope.”

Hope for recovery: The steps towards sobriety

Over the years, he developed a set of steps that he believes people striving to sever their dependence on drugs and alcohol must take.

The first step came from interviewing addicts that had 20-30 years of sobriety under their belts, who all admitted that their success came from admitting that they were “powerless” against substances.

“You just happen to be powerless over alcohol and drugs,” he pointed out. “It doesn’t mean you’re a weak person.”

He has his patients say their name and that they are “powerless” over their substances of choice out loud. His reasoning is that “Your brain needs to hear that coming out of your mouth, because part of your brain doesn’t believe that.”

According to Dr. Headrick, the next big step to conquer is negative thinking, because taking a chemical to cope with bad feelings is giving that negative thought a “little reward.”

The third step is that his patients must get “high on life,” and discover a healthy addiction.

“Find whatever it is… a dream, a mission, your passion, your purpose,” he encouraged. “If they don’t have hope, nothing’s going to work.”

Hope for recovery: An inside job

At the end of the day, Dr. Headrick believes it’s his mission to give people hope and that by working hand and hand with patients, they can get through anything.

However, he acknowledges that the recovery and healing process is ultimately up to the addict to put in the work towards achieving.

“It comes from you, it comes from inside. It’s not from your sponsor, or from me. It’s you, it’s an inside job,” the healer said.

Antonio Polo | A Mission To Build Salinas

Antonio Polo is a Catholic missionary whose accomplishments extend far beyond the spread of religion. An Italian native, he came to Salinas, Ecuador in 1970 to provide assistance to locals who were impoverished due to harsh conditions imposed by their affluent landlords. 

What was supposed to be a four-month stay turned into 50+ years, as Antonio has devoted his life to creating co-operatives within the village, providing its residence with self-sustainability. 

Because of Antonio, Salinas’s natives have been able to make livings for themselves and build a thriving community based on solidarity, rather than servitude. But what led Antonio Polo to the parish in the first place?

Antonio Polo Becomes a Priest

Antonio was born on March 24, 1939 in Venice, Italy. Shortly after his birth, World War II began, and due to the harsh reign of Benito Mussolini, his family was forced to escape to a nearby island, where his uncle was a priest. 

His uncle’s influence was evident in Antonio from an early age: As a child, he would wear his uncle’s cassock and celebrate mass by himself, playing the role of priest.

“I used to like the priests a lot because they would play even when they reached maturity,” he said. “I used to say, ‘When I’m old, I want to keep playing, unlike my dad, who was very strict and always working.”

In early adulthood, Antonio manifested his dream and did indeed become a priest, though he still felt that he had more to accomplish; he wanted to delve into missionary work. The opportunity arrived in an offer from Monsignor Rada, who told Antonio a priest was needed for a four-month mission in Salinas, Ecuador.

“I said to myself, ‘If I don’t take this opportunity, I am a coward,’” he said.

Antonio Polo Arrives in Salinas, Ecuador

When Antonio arrived in Salinas, the extent of the village’s problems was immediately apparent to him: “We arrived here after traversing a large hill, as there was no road into the village,” he said.

“I saw about 30 small shacks… a stream of smoke was coming out of each shack, each stream forming a single column that rose to the sky. I saw this as a message. I interpreted it as a calling…”

“Later, when I entered a small shack, I saw a lack of everything: a lack of hygiene, water, electric power, healthcare. I came to learn that 45% of the village’s children passed away before they were five years old.”

One of the village’s oldest residents, a woman named María Toalombo recalls the village’s living conditions prior to the arrival of Antonio: “A long time ago, everything was made of straw.  Then Father Antonio came, and with him came growth and well-made houses.” 

Antonio Polo on Why Living Conditions Were Harsh Upon His Arrival in Salinas, Ecuador

Salinas’s problems prior to the arrival of Antonio can be attributed to two primary factors: the collapse of the salt-mining industry, as well as the oppressive nature of the village’s landlords. 

Despite its small size—to this day, the village has a population of only ~1,000 people—Salinas was, for a time, able to thrive off of its close proximity to salt mines. However, with the cheapening of table salt, the industry had for a long time been on its way out, leaving many of the village’s residents scrounging for work.

Couple this with the fact that the village’s landlords were especially greedy, essentially acting as the ruling class of Salinas; taking advantage of the Salinas’s isolation, they would charge residents copious amounts of rent money without providing amenities needed to provide healthy lives (hence the fact that 45% of the village’s children did not survive past the age of five).

What Did Antonio Polo Do to Make Salinas a Better Place?

“We first had to free the villagers from their landlords,” Antonio said, “because if they were not liberated, any progress we made went straight to the boss.”

Antonio learned that the salt mines were not, in fact, the property of the landlords. Because salt is an underground resource, it belongs to the state, and, according to Antonio, “They assign it to whoever organizes to extract it.” 

Thus the Cooperative Society was born. Through Antonio’s organizational tactics, the villagers were able to take back control of the salt mines, demonstrating to their landlords for the first time that they had the power to rise above their oppressors. However, lots more work would need to be done to fully liberate the people of Salinas.

Antonio Polos Encourages the Growth of a New Industry in Salinas

As stated, the salt mines were progressively becoming less profitable. In pursuit of a new industry through which the village could become sustainable, Antonio realized that many of Salinas’s residents had experience making cheese for the landlords.

“Locals knew how to make cheese for the landlords, so we thought, ‘Let’s make cheese for the community,’” he said.

After mastering the processes of making a variety of cheeses, the villagers founded their own cheese brand Salinerito and were able to open stores in Quito, Ecuador’s largest city: “This was the spark that ignited everything that came afterwards,” Antonio said.

Currently, Salinerito is sold in Ecuador, Spain, France, Italy, and even Japan. And the company intends to expand even further. Still, even after having assisted thousands of families leave poverty, Antonio insists his actions are not about the money, but about the community. 

“We have several solidarity-based companies,” he said. “We have a meat confectionery, we sell medicinal herbs and natural products. With solidarity-based companies, small businesses can fight big corporations.”

Antonio Polo on Heroism

Antonio believes that a hero should not only make sacrifices for the greater good, but should always put the needs of their community above their personal need for recognition. This belief is exemplified in his refusal to use village money to construct a commemorative monument in his honor.

According to Hugo Toalambo, the ex-CEO of the Cooperative Society, “All the local politicians say they feel great appreciation for Antonio and decided to make him a monument. We were all on board, but when we consulted Father Antonio, he said no.

The regional prefect insisted, but he kept saying no, even though the monument was already budgeted. Instead, he presented a list of things that were needed for the elderly house. “He said, ‘I am alive. When I die, do whatever you want. But today, you can look at me.’”

Clearly, Antonio does not revel in his good deeds. He does what he does for the wellbeing of those around him. And he does not attribute Salinas’s progress solely to himself, but also to the countless individuals who strived, and continue to strive, to rise above their seemingly hopeless conditions and create a better world for themselves and for future generations.

Antonio Polo Is a Hero

One could easily attribute Salinas’s evolution to Antonio. And while his work contributed greatly to the villagers’ liberation, part of what makes him so heroic is the fact that he remains humble:

He will not take sole credit for the village’s progress, as it was both him and the native villagers themselves who worked to make change. Having resided in and worked for Salinas for over 50 years, it is clear that his efforts are made out of love for humankind.
