As we began to see yesterday, the only way to counteract the problem of disunity within the church is to actively pursue peace with one another. First, we must “receive” one another, and not strive with one another. We must also avoid judging, or condemning, one another based on these nonessential differences. As we have seen, in Romans 14 Paul has set forth the inherent potential for conflict due to the presence of weaker and stronger brethren in the church. But he doesn’t just describe the problem: he prescribes the solution! As we began to see yesterday, there are many things that are not essentials of the faith, and upon which it is okay for Christians to disagree. Paul gives us two examples: the eating of meat, and the observance of holy days. We began looking at the eating of meat in the first half of this sermon, and learned that “meat” has nothing to do with our eternal salvation. Likewise, there is no commandment to observe any special days, yet this should not be a matter upon which we divide. As we began looking at Romans 14, we saw that Paul is teaching us about the potential for conflict between “weaker” and “stronger” Christians. In the first half of this sermon, we discussed the overall problem of disunity within the church, and we began to see that there is a constant need for loving tolerance among the membership. However, this tolerance does NOT extend to matters that are essential beliefs! As we move into Romans 14, we confront head-on the problem of disunity. Paul begins this portion of Scripture by recognizing that there are “weaker” and “stronger” Christians within every church, who may not be on the same page about every single belief. The “weaker brother” tends to be more legalistic, and may not understand the liberty that we have in Christ in the same way that a stronger Christian rightly grasps the concept. Paul instructs the stronger brother to “receive” the weaker; but how does this impact our essential beliefs? Is Paul telling us to compromise on every matter? As we have seen in our exposition of Romans, the last few verses of Romans 13 contains a “heavenly wake up call” to children of God who have been lulled into a state of spiritual slumber by the world. As we get back to our series on the Book of Romans, we find a “heavenly wake-up call” at the end of Chapter 13. In verse 12 of Revelation 22, Jesus makes the statement to John, “My reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Does this mean that salvation is by works instead of by grace? The answer is a resounding “no’! Rather, this statement by Christ is a statement about the changed nature of God’s people rather than about their behavior at any given time. Any other interpretation flies in the face of the teaching of salvation by grace. As we continue in the Book of Revelation, we come to a phrase that Elder Buddy Abernathy has taught us about before: “Behold, I come quickly.” The point has been made already that, at least from our perspective, the term “quickly” doesn’t necessarily mean “soon,” but it really means “suddenly.” When the Lord returns, it will be “suddenly.” But from God’s perspective, it means BOTH “suddenly” AND “soon.” In more than one place in Scripture, we are taught that a day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day. As we continue in the last chapter of Revelation, we find an interesting saying: “Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book.” In some cases, the Lord has told his servants to “seal up” the sayings; but now He instructs John NOT to seal it up, but to broadcast it! The reason for this is that “the time is at hand.” When we hear this phrase, we think of something that is imminent or soon to happen. However, this phrase in Scripture doesn’t necessarily mean “right away,” but it means something that is certain to happen, and to happen in a certain way: it is to happen “quickly.” Join us today for the first half of this sermon by Elder Buddy Abernathy.

In the sermon today, we move into the final subdivision of the Book of Revelation, which I have entitled, “In the Meantime.” This sermon is a little shorter than usual, because it is the last half of a sermon where Elder Buddy Abernathy finished up the previous subdivision of Revelation and then moved on into this last portion, which focuses on the last verses of the Bible. These verses that we deal with today return our focus to our earthly experience instead of a heavenly vision. They teach us what we should be focusing on “in the meantime,”, while we wait for the return of our Lord. This is a sort of “epilogue” to the Book of Revelation, and in this portion of Scripture we are reminded of the urgency of the Second Coming of Christ. The Lord is telling us in these verses that the focus of the New Testament church ought to be that Jesus is coming back to take us home! In most eschatological teaching today, we are told that certain events must occur before Jesus comes again. But the Bible teaching is that Jesus is coming quickly, and we ought to be looking for and hasting the day of the Lord! Join us today as we move into this epilogue of Revelation and find encouraging words for us in the daily grind of our lives, including the admonition that we should “worship God.”

As we return to Elder Buddy Abernathy’s exposition of the Book of Revelation, we come to the end of another division within that series, which I have entitled “A New Vision of Heaven.” You may recall that we have seen the new heavens and new earth and the Bride of Christ in Chapter 21, and the living waters and the tree of life in Chapter 22. Today we conclude this subdivision by looking at the rest of the vision of John in Chapter 22:3-5. We see here that there will be no more curse in heaven, and that we shall see God’s face there. When Christ came the first time, the Jews by and large were unsuspecting and unprepared. But if they had studied the Book of Daniel, they should have known the general timeframe of the Messiah’s arrival on the scene. In Daniel 9, God gave them a timeline through Daniel’s prophecy of “seventy weeks of years.” In this prophecy, although it speaks of weeks, each day in these weeks represents one year. When we trace out the timeline, we can see that this prophecy should have prepared any who studied it for the first coming of Jesus and His ultimate sacrifice. Due to the somewhat detailed and technical nature of this sermon, we want to post it without any breaks, so it will be a little longer than usual. As we began to see yesterday, God turned from the Jews to the Gentiles by grace, and not because of some inherent superiority of the Gentiles. In the same way the Jews were not better than the Gentiles, neither were the Gentiles better than the Jews! Therefore, no one should be lifted up in pride over the fact that the early church was becoming more of a Gentile church than a Jewish church. In the last half of this sermon, Paul admonishes the Gentile believers not only to remember their own depravity, and that the Jews fell because of unbelief, but also to remember that it is all of God’s grace, which displays His greatness and glory.

In the last sermon we posted, we dealt with the Jews and jealousy. Today, we turn to the Gentiles and grace. We saw that, because of their unbelief, God turned from the Jews to the Gentiles in His primary dealings under the gospel age. However, that is no reason for the Gentiles to become lifted up in pride! When it comes down to the heart of the matter, salvation is all about grace and not at all about anyone deserving it. As we began to see yesterday, when the Jews as a nation rejected Christ as the Messiah, God “judicially blinded” them, and turned His focus on the Gentiles to spread the gospel message. This “judicial blindness” was not an arbitrary act based on some secret cosmic plan, but rather a timely chastisement for their unbelief. And although it did not carry eternal consequences, it was a severe judgment nonetheless. Today we will see that one of the purposes for turning to the Gentiles with the gospel was to provoke the Jews to jealousy – that is, to make them want what the Gentiles now have in the Kingdom of God. This brings us to the heart of the matter: are we provoking those around us to this same kind of jealousy? By our actions and attitudes, are we making others want to have what we have in the church? May we ever live in such a way that others will want to “come and see” where our joy and godliness comes from! Join us today for the conclusion of this sermon about the Jews and jealousy.

In Romans Chapter Eleven, we have learned that the Jews of Jesus’ day were “judicially blinded” by God due to their persistent rejection of the gospel message. We learned that this was a timely chastening, and not an eternal punishment, for Paul is speaking about Jews who were regenerated children of God. Today, we learn a little more about the condition that they were in, and how the apostles turned to the Gentiles with the good news of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. But we see that one of the purposes of the focus on the Gentiles was in order to provoke the Jews to jealousy. Join us today for the first half of this sermon about the Jews and jealousy.

As we began to see yesterday, “judicial blindness” is a specific chastening judgment meted out by God upon His people the Jews due to their persistent unbelief of the gospel message. We learned that this sort of blindness is a spiritual condition where individuals or groups are divinely permitted to remain in a state of spiritual ignorance or insensitivity as a consequence of their continuing unbelief and disobedience. God is truly longsufferring, but there comes a point where He permits the consequences of our actions to overtake us in this life! Thankfully, this is a timely chastening, and not an eternal judgment, but we should strive to avoid it by embracing the true gospel message that Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness!

In Romans 11, we read about the “judicial blinding” of Israel. This “judicial blindness” is a chastening judgment upon His people – in this case the Jews – who continually reject the clear preaching of the gospel message. These are NOT reprobate, non-elect persons; rather, just like in Chapter 10, these are regenerated children of God who have persisted in disobedience to the gospel. Join us today as we begin looking at this concept of “judicial blindness,” and how it can affect us if we refuse to heed the clear teachings of Scripture.

We return today to the question of whether there are any of God’s children who, through their actions, will be “cast away” from God. As we were beginning to see in the first half of this sermon, the answer is an emphatic “No!” Paul uses Elijah as an example of how NOT to think about what we see in our current ministry: instead of thinking there are no children of God left, and we alone are God’s faithful servant, we should understand that matters of eternal life are left in the hands of God! As we bring our study of the Book of Nehemiah to a close, we are examining the leadership of Nehemiah. Remember, Nehemiah was not a prophet or a priest, but a lay member of Israel’s congregation. He didn’t have a special calling on his life, but he had a strong burden for the Kingdom of God. What an example he is for us today! In the first half of this concluding sermon, we saw that Nehemiah’s leadership depended on vision and prayer. In the second half of the sermon, which we are posting today, we find that Nehemiah led the people of Judah by following God’s plan, not by making up his own plan. True leadership cannot be divorced from the word of God, which teaches us the right path to follow. And Nehemiah was a godly man, who didn’t just “talk the talk, he “walked the walk”! In our study of the Book of Nehemiah, we have seen how the leadership of just one man can make such a difference in the Kingdom of God! As we saw in the first half of this sermon from our exposition of Nehemiah, the zeal of the Jews in Judah had subsided after the initial fervor of the revival. Those who had rededicated themselves to the worship and support of the Temple had slipped back in to sin and error. When Nehemiah returned from a short trip back to the palace in Persia, he found personal and public falsity in the Temple service. But being the leader he was, Nehemiah addressed the problems in a godly manner, and restored them to the right approach to God. In the chapters leading up to this final chapter of Nehemiah, we have seen how the fervor of revival overtook the Jews that had returned to Jerusalem. Not only did they rededicate themselves to the Law and the work of the Temple, but they promised to do over and above that which the Law required! However, now we see that their leader Nehemiah has returned briefly to Persia, and that the zeal they had has subsided and they have begun to go back on those promises. As we saw yesterday, when Nehemiah returned for a brief time to Persia, the people he was leading in Jerusalem began to slip back into compromising positions with the world. In fact, they began to let the world and worldly things creep into their worship services! I’ve heard some preachers today make the statement, “The church is getting more worldly, and the world is getting more churchy.” May we ever strive to guard against compromising with the world, both in our public worship and in our private lives!

As we get back to our exposition of the Book of Nehemiah, we are at a point where Nehemiah had returned to Persia for a short time. During his absence, the people of Jerusalem apparently lost their fervor of revival and began to slip back into the old ways. They began to compromise with the world. As we began to see yesterday, most people were mistaken when it came to the first coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. We saw yesterday that the fact of His coming and the timing of His coming should have been clear to the Jews of Jesus’ day. Over the years, we have enjoyed sweet fellowship with Elder Sam Bryant here at Zion Church. In 2013, Bro. There are many things we ought to be thankful for, as we learn in Psalm 100. In the first half of this sermon, we began to look at some of those things, including the fact that we are God’s children and will eventually be with Him for eternity. But in the latter part of this Psalm, we are instructed to “enter into his GATES with thanksgiving, and into his COURTS with praise!” This is a clear reference to the place of public worship, where God has promised to grant His greatest blessings in this life. In the season of Thanksgiving, the Lord led us to the 100th Psalm, which is the Psalm we often go to on the topic of “thanksgiving.” We see many things in this psalm that we should be thankful for, especially the fact that we are God’s people, the sheep of His pasture. What does the Lord require of us as His children? Yesterday, we began to see that He requires us to walk with Him humbly and to do right and love mercy. In Micah 6:8, we find the familiar instruction about what God requires of us: to “do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God.” This does NOT teach that we have to “earn” God’s love in our daily walk, but rather that we ought to serve Him out of love and gratitude . While obedience is essential to our discipleship, we ought not serve Him with a view toward earning “credit” with God. Rather, we should serve Him because of the amazing grace He has shown to us. Yesterday we began to see that the people of Nehemiah’s day committed not only themselves to God, but also their praise to Him. God had blessed them so greatly that they could not contain their joy in the Kingdom! Today, we finish up looking at the way they committed their praise to God, and then consider how they then committed their property – their “stuff” – to God. God expects us to contribute to the work of the Kingdom from the abundance of material blessings that He has given to us. In the previous sermon from chapter eleven of the Book of Nehemiah, we saw that the Jews in Nehemiah’s day had committed themselves to God. Today, we see from chapter 12 that they also committed their praise to God! We read in verse 43 that the joyful praise of those in Jerusalem was heard “afar off.” These Jewish brethren were so excited about the place where the Lord had brought them that they could not contain their joy, but shouted it out so that all could hear! These Jews ought to be the example for us as we commit our praise to God for all He has done for us.

As we saw yesterday, the Jews in Nehemiah’s day committed themselves to serve God. Some of them moved into the City of Jerusalem, and others populated the surrounding area. This kind of service to the Kingdom is pleasing to the Lord, as we learn from other scriptures such as Malachi 3:16: “Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon His name.” Join us today as we continue to see that it takes all sorts of people with all sorts of backgrounds and skills – with the Lord’s help – to maintain the earthly Kingdom of God.

As we move on into the Book of Nehemiah, we have arrived at the point where the Jews under Nehemiah make some commitments to follow through in their obedience to God. In today’s sermon, we learn about how they committed themselves to God. Some of them moved into the city of Jerusalem proper, and others populated the surrounding villages. But in each case, they committed their lives to the work of the Kingdom. We ought to follow their example and commit ourselves to God as well!

As we began to see last time, the Jews of Nehemiah’s day not only submitted themselves to the Law and separated themselves from the world, they also committed themselves to support the work of the Temple. We learned that God doesn’t NEED our earthly support, but He desires it and requires it! When we support the work of the house of the Lord, we demonstrate our commitment to the Kingdom. In today’s sermon, we learn about ways in which they supported the work of the House of the Lord in Nehemiah’s day. The ways in which they supported the work of the Kingdom in that day help us to understand how we should support that work in our day. As we continue in Chapter Ten of Nehemiah, we find the phrase “house of our God” appearing nine times in these verses, referring to the Temple that had been restored in Zerubbabel’s day. In the prophecy of Haggai, we learn about the rebuilding of that Temple, and how God promised that it would be more glorious even than Solomon’s Temple because the Lord Jesus Christ would walk in this new Temple! In this chapter, we have already seen that the Jews under Nehemiah committed to submit themselves to the Law and to separate themselves from the world. As we continue in this chapter, we see that they also swore to support the work of the Kingdom with their lives and their material things. Join us as we learn about their dedication to the work of the Kingdom of God.

As we saw yesterday, the Jews who returned from the Captivity had recommitted themselves to the Law of God, and promised to separate themselves from the world. God has always required separation from the world, and He still requires it today! There were two areas in particular where these Jews needed to be separate from the world: in their marriages, and in their observance of the Sabbath. Join us today as we continue to look at this principle of “separation,” and how it applied to them in that day and to us in our day.

Today we return to our exposition of the Book of Nehemiah, which teaches us about God’s rebuilding program. After a short review of where we are at this point, we go back today to the tenth chapter, where Nehemiah and the Jews who returned from the Captivity are putting into place the things they promised when they “sealed” their faithfulness to the Law in Chapter Nine. We have already seen that they reaffirmed their submission to God and to His Law, and today we see that they vowed to separate themselves from the world. As we began to learn yesterday, this world is not our home. In our text, we learn that even Jesus had no place to lay His head. As we move through the second half of this sermon, we find that we ourselves are not at home in this world, but that we are pilgrims on our way to our REAL home! In the wake of all the troubles we see in this world, we are reminded that this world is not our home! With the Charlie Kirk shooting, and other tragedies and persecutions in this world, we find ourselves asking, “How can this be fixed?” If we are looking for answers “under the sun,” then the answer is, “We can’t!” But when we look to Jesus for answers, we realize that the Resurrection is the answer to it all. The preaching of the gospel is the greatest privilege we have as regenerated children of God. It is primarily through preaching the gospel that those of God’s little lost sheep, who have already been born again, finally hear and embrace the good news of Christ’s finished work. But there is a problem we must consider: what about all those who hear the gospel but don’t obey it? While the answer given in the world is that they all die and go to hell, thankfully the Bible answer is that God will save His children regardless of their faithfulness! But there are still consequences for continuing to reject the gospel message. Join us today as we begin to see how important it is for us to believe the gospel, and some of the problems that arise for us when we reject it.

Having examined in some detail the two types of zeal described in the first half of Romans 10, the one being a sincere but misplaced zeal and the other being an informed and proper zeal, we turn now to the normal way by which a regenerated child of God comes to embrace the gospel message: by hearing the preaching of the gospel. In today’s portion of the sermon, we deal with the purpose of preaching the gospel message. We are reminded that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved,” but that this salvation is not an eternal salvation. Rather, it is a salvation – or deliverance – that occurs in time. The purpose of preaching is not to bring life and immortality to the child of God, but rather to bring that life and immortality – that has already been imparted through the new birth – to light. Join us today as we look at the purpose of the preaching of the gospel, and how true evangelism should be paramount in the work of the church.

As we began to see yesterday, Romans 10 begins by speaking of a people that have “zeal of God.” We have already learned that this was a zeal given to them by God, and thus we can conclude that they are regenerated children of God. But their zeal was misplaced – they were going about to establish their own righteousness, and had not obeyed the gospel message that required them to submit themselves to the righteousness of Christ. Today, we conclude this sermon by examining the properly-placed zeal of the Apostle Paul, who had a deep desire for the gospel salvation of his Jewish countrymen. As you know, we are currently engaged in an exposition of the Book of Romans. Today’s sermon is a follow-up to our exploration of the tenth chapter, where we learned about some Jews who were in need of “salvation” – but not eternal salvation, rather they needed “gospel salvation.” You see, they had a “zeal of God” – that is, a zeal imparted to them by God in the new birth – but it was an ignorant and misplaced zeal. Their zeal was “not according to knowledge.” On the other hand, Paul had a great zeal for these people, and a great desire that they should come to embrace the message of the gospel. This was a proper zeal, and as we will see, this zeal ought to inform and guide our own. Join us today as we begin to learn more about Paul’s evangelistic zeal in Romans 10.

As we began to see yesterday, Paul teaches in Romans 10 that there are some people who are regenerated yet have not embraced the gospel message. These Jews were going about to establish their own righteousness, and we saw yesterday that they were trying to keep the Law in order to go to heaven. As we left off the message last time, we were beginning to explore the two types of righteousness described in this chapter. There is the “righteousness which is of the Law,” and the “righteousness which is of faith.” This concept builds logically and naturally upon the idea of “justification by faith” that Paul has already taught us in the Book of Romans. Join us today as continue learning what these Jews needed to be “saved” from, and which type of righteousness we need to embrace in order to avail ourselves of this gospel salvation.

As we move into the tenth chapter of Romans, Paul sets forth his zeal for his Jewish brethren to be “saved.” But the question we must always ask when we see the term “saved” is, “Saved from what?” Paul makes it clear in this passage, that the Jews he is concerned about already have a zeal “of God” – that is, a zeal that belongs to God but has been imputed to them in the new birth. These Jews under consideration are already born again! Thus, their eternal salvation is not in question here. Rather, the salvation Paul is concerned with is gospel salvation, a conditional time salvation that they had missed by refusing to embrace the gospel message. Join us today as we learn the answer to this question, “Saved from what?”

In yesterday’s sermon, we began to examine the second objection to the doctrine of election set forth by Paul in Romans 9. This objection – which I call the “absoluter objection” – argues that, since “God made me this way” (i.e., God has basically predestinated everyone to be what they are and do what they are doing), He would not be just or right to find fault with us. Of course, this argument fails because, first, God is God and can do whatsoever He pleases. But second, the argument fails because we do NOT believe in the absolute predestination of all things! God is not the cause of sin or our sinning, and we are NOT puppets being manipulated into the wicked acts that we commit. Join us today as Paul continues shooting down this objection, and then goes on to describe some timely applications of the doctrine of individual and personal election in our daily lives.

As we continue dealing with the objections to the doctrine of election set forth in Romans 9, we come to the second objection that is commonly raised. I call this objection the “Absoluter Objection,” because it goes something like this: “God, you made me a reprobate, so how can you still find fault with me and send me to hell?” The answer, of course, is that God is God and can do what He wants, and furthermore God is not the one who caused men to be sinners! Rather, the fault lies both with Adam and with ourselves. We are sinners by nature inherited from Adam, but we are also sinners by our own choice and practice. Join us today as we begin to deal with this “Absoluter Objection” to the doctrine of election.

In our study of the first objection to the doctrine of election, we come to a couple of verses that some propose to be a problem for those of us who believe in God’s sovereign grace. In Romans 9:17-18, Paul writes this about Pharaoh: “Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.” Does this mean that God stirred up Pharaoh to act so wickedly? Did He cause Pharaoh to commit all those evil acts? The answer is a resounding “No,” as we will see in the sermon today. Join us as we finish up with our examination of the first objection to the doctrine of election, and deal with the so-called “problem” of Pharaoh.

Whenever the doctrine of election is discussed, some objections inevitably arise. Here in Romans 9, Paul anticipates a couple of these objections. We will deal with the first objection today, which is usually phrased somewhat like this: God just wouldn’t be right, or fair, if the doctrine of election is true. Paul phrases it this way: Is there unrighteousness with God? And he answers the objection, “God forbid!” Join us today as we learn how Paul dealt with this objection, and how we can still deal with it today.

As we continue in our exposition of the Book of Romans, we have reached the point where we deal with what the doctrine of election actually teaches. We learn that God chose His people in Christ before the foundation of the world, and that His electing grace is not contingent upon any choice or actions on their part. And we learn that this doctrine is taught on almost every page of Scripture! Perhaps the best summation of the doctrine is found in Romans 9:15-16: “For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.” Join us today as we look at the sweet and glorious doctrine of election.

In our exposition of the Book of Romans, we have come to a passage that some consider difficult. But when Paul makes the statement in Romans 9:13 that “Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated,” he was under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. In the first half of this sermon, we began to learn that the word “hate” truly means “hate,” and that this concept of divine hatred is a Bible principle. As we continue examining this concept today, we learn that God’s hatred of the wicked is a perfect moral hatred, not an arbitrary emotional response, and that it perfectly reflects His holy character. We will see that the fact that God loved Jacob and hated Esau is the foundation for an understanding of God’s grace that is bestowed upon His children in election. In our exposition of the Book of Romans, we have come to a verse that causes many people to stumble. In Romans 9:13, we read that, “Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” The concept of divine hatred is an extremely important concept to understand. First and foremost, we must accept the fact that it is taught in Scripture and that it reflects the perfectly holy nature of God. And even though this concept may be hard from some to accept, when we understand it in its context, we learn some rich truths that ultimately help us grasp the true nature of God’s eternal love for His people. As we began to see yesterday, Paul’s evangelistic zeal was very real and very appropriate. However, it was NOT a misplaced zeal that was somehow hoping that some people among his Jewish brethren who otherwise were bound for hell would turn around and embrace the gospel so they could go to heaven. His topic was time salvation – timely deliverance through the gospel – rather than eternal salvation which is solely in the hands of God. Join us today as we see that the zeal of the Apostle Paul ought to be the same evangelistic zeal we have today.

As we get back to our exposition of the Book of Romans, we find ourselves in the Ninth Chapter. This chapter begins with Paul’s exclamation of evangelistic zeal, where he says he could wish that he himself were accursed from God if it meant the reconciliation of his Jewish brethren to God. Is Paul speaking here of eternal salvation? The answer is a resounding “No!” He is speaking of the timely salvation of his people rather than their eternal salvation, which is completely secure in Christ. In the last posted sermon, we saw that the devil is our primary enemy. We learned his tactics and discovered biblical principles on how to resist him. Today, we begin looking at a second enemy of God’s people: the world. The world is against us, and especially so since the devil is the prince of this world. Today we are continuing in a sermon in our exposition of Nehemiah which begins in Chapter Ten, which details how the people of God in Jerusalem performed after the prayer/sermon of Chapter Nine. When we paused the message yesterday, we were reading and examining Deuteronomy 29, which Ezra likely would have read to them publicly as they considered reaffirming their commitment to the Covenant of the Law. This chapter details the curses that would follow if the people of Israel refused to follow the Law and sought after other gods. The leaders of the remnant in Jerusalem sealed their reaffirmation of the Law, and the people ratified their actions, in effect binding themselves to these curses as they submitted themselves once again to God. Join us today as we continue in Chapter 10 of Nehemiah.

After the long prayer/sermon of Chapter Nine, Nehemiah and his friends entered into a reaffirmation of the Mosaic covenant with a “seal.” This seal signified their submission to God and His Law. The prayer of Chapter Nine was heartfelt and sincere, but it is important to perform after the prayer! And we find in Chapter Ten that this faithful remnant did just that: they performed on what they had prayed. Join us today as we begin to see how they reaffirmed their commitment and submission to God.

As we come to the close of Nehemiah Chapter Nine, we find Nehemiah and his friends praying and praising God in a long prayer/sermon that recounts the history of the Nation of Israel. They begin the prayer/sermon by praising God for His greatness, and for His goodness, but they acknowledge their own sins that they committed even though God had done so many good things for them. That’s where we were when we paused the message yesterday: they were acknowledging their sins before God and praising God for His graciousness toward them. Join us as we see the conclusion of this prayer/sermon, and the sweet grace and mercy which God displayed toward this unfaithful people.

In today’s message, we come to the end of Chapter 9 of Nehemiah. In the great “prayer/sermon” of this chapter, we have seen them praising God for His greatness and for His goodness; today, we see them praising God for His grace. The nation of Israel was almost continually backsliding, but God was continually gracious and merciful to them. Join us as we see the grace of God in His dealings with His people.

When we paused the sermon yesterday, we were continuing to examine the prayer/sermon of Nehemiah Chapter 9. We are looking at the content of this prayer/sermon, which traces the history of the Nation of Israel from their formation up until the present time of Nehemiah. We were in the middle of learning about God’s formation of the Nation, and today we will continue learning about His goodness to them throughout their history. And once again, we will learn how Israel continually forsook God, yet He chastened them in love and took them back when they repented. In Nehemiah Chapter Nine, we find a long prayer/sermon that details the history of Israel, and focuses upon their God Jehovah. As we have seen in our study of Nehemiah, Chapter Nine begins with the people of God continuing to worship God even after the conclusion of the Feast of Tabernacles. As we move into the Ninth Chapter of Romans, we see a distinct change in mood from the previous chapter. Paul goes from the mountaintop of eternal salvation and security to the valley of earthly sorrow over his Jewish countrymen who do not believe in Christ. Why is his heart so heavy? Is it because he is afraid that some of his fellow Jews are going to die and go to hell because they don’t believe? The answer is a resounding, “No!” The explanation lies in two important doctrines that are taught in Scripture: “eternal” versus “time” salvation. In our exposition of the Book of Romans, we have begun looking at the “all things” that work together for our good, as taught in Romans 8:28-30. These things are listed in verses 29 and 30, as follows: foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification. When we paused the message yesterday, we had already examined the foreknowledge of God, and were in the middle of learning about the doctrine of “predestination.” Today we continue looking at these wonderful doctrines, which are the heart of the gospel message, and learn that it is THIS message that needs to be preached from the pulpits today. The “good news” is that, because of “all these things” that work together for our good, all of God’s elect children will one day be in heaven with Him.

As we learned in the last sermon, the “all things” referenced in Romans 8:28 is not talking about “all things without exception.” Clearly, there are many things working against us and against God. But there ARE some things that are working in our favor; what are these things? Today we begin looking at the things that are working for us, which are primarily the five things pertaining to our eternal salvation: foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification.

As we began to see yesterday, the world’s interpretation of Romans 8:28 is clearly wrong. “All things” does NOT mean “all things without exception”! Not only does a contextual analysis of the verse require a different interpretation, but also we began to see that there are MANY things in our lives that work AGAINST us, not FOR us! Indeed, God Himself is not “working together with” Satan or sin, but rather is against them. In our study on the Book of Romans, we have come to one of the most misinterpreted and misapplied verses in Scripture. In Romans 8:28, we read that “all things work together for good” for God’s people. Does this mean “all things without exception?” Is God indeed orchestrating everything behind the scenes, creating and causing sin and sinful behavior in order to somehow work good in our lives? The answer is a resounding “no.” In the sermon today, we begin to look at the contextual meaning of this verse. Biblical hope is a real thing, a confident expectation of good, based upon the finished work of Christ on the cross. As we move on through Chapter 8 of the Book of Romans, we come to a precious statement by Paul: “We are saved by hope.” For those of us who are familiar with what Primitive Baptists believe about hope, we understand that “hope” is not some ephemeral concept, some wispy wish that probably won’t come to pass. As we began to see yesterday, adoption is a central concept to Scripture. We learned that God the Father purposed our adoption, and God the Son paid for our adoption by His death on the cross. As we get back to our study in the Book of Romans, we are looking at two verses in Chapter 8 which deal with being led by the Spirit of God. As we continue in Chapter 9 of Nehemiah, we see that the people of God continued to worship their God even after the Feast of the Tabernacles was ended. They continued in the word of God, which brought them conviction and repentance. And as they learned from the word, they prepared to praise the Lord through worship. In our study of Nehemiah, we have come to the ninth chapter. Here we find that, after celebrating the Feast of Tabernacles in the right way for the first time since the days of Joshua the son of Nun, the Jews in Nehemiah’s day didn’t just disperse and go back to their daily lives. They engaged in a “protracted meeting,” continuing to worship God with zeal! They stayed focused on the word of God, which brought conviction, separation, and confession.

In Jeremiah 6:16, God tells His people to “ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein.” But where do we find the “old paths?” Do we go back to the way our parents did it? Do we go back to our grandparents’ day? Or must we go even farther back than that? As we continue today in our study of Nehemiah, we will learn that, until we go all the way back to the word of God, we haven’t gone far enough! When Nehemiah and Ezra brought the people of God together to worship after the completion of the walls, they took them back to the Book of the Law and discovered that they had not been worshiping correctly since the days of Joshua. Join us as we see how important it is to get “back to the Book” in order to worship God correctly.

As we saw in the last sermon, Nehemiah and Ezra gathered the people of the Lord together for a public worship service after the walls had been rebuilt. And the people listened to the word that was read and explained, and were obedient to it! Today we continue looking at how the people of God got back to the Book, and were open to it and learned from it. From their example, we will see how we ought to get back to the Bible in our doctrine and practice in order to worship God in the right way.

In the first half of this sermon, we examined the qualifications of Ezra the Priest, who was a faithful servant who stayed in the word of God. Today, we continue looking at this account, where Nehemiah and Ezra gathered the people together to get them back to the Law of Moses. Ezra opened the book, and preached from it, and the people ultimately rejoiced in the word of God! Join us as we continue learning how important it is to get back to the Book!

After the rebuilding of the walls was completed, Nehemiah and Ezra the Priest gathered the people together to worship the Lord. They went back to the word of God, bringing out the book of the law of Moses to read and preach to them. Ezra was a “ready scribe”, and is a great example to us of how New Testament preachers ought to be today! Join us today as we begin this chapter by examining Ezra’s qualifications and dedication to the ministry.

In the first half of this sermon from Nehemiah Chapter Seven, we saw that after the great rebuilding project had been miraculously finished in fifty-two days, Nehemiah appointed godly leadership to help him protect that which God had blessed them with. Then God put into his heart to make a list of “the nobles, and the rulers, and the people” who were with him in Jerusalem and helped with the work of rebuilding the walls. While this long list might seem tedious as we read it, is it not wonderful and amazing that God would prompt him to record the names of these faithful servants? What an encouragement this ought to be to us, to be reminded that God loves and focuses upon His people who serve Him in His Kingdom even today!

Now that the rebuilding project had been completed, you might think the next verse would read, “And they all lived happily ever after.” But we all know that’s not true! Sometimes after the great “mountain top experiences” of life, our most difficult tests come around. In Nehemiah Chapter 7, we learn that God is just as interested in protecting that which He has blessed us with, as in giving it to us in the first place. Today, we see the Nehemiah did that by focusing upon recruiting godly leadership to help him in protecting the blessings he had received from God.

As we saw yesterday, we are at the point in the account of Nehemiah where the walls have been completed. Rather than boast about his own successes, Nehemiah and the Jews rejoiced in the faithfulness of God throughout the project! Today, we see that their rejoicing led to open praise of God, and ultimately increased their faith in God. And even though the work of this project was now done, the work of the Kingdom had not ended! The schemes of the enemy linger, and in fact his efforts are often redoubled when the work has ended and rest appears to be in sight. Join us as we continue looking at the way we should be watchful even when the work has ended.

In our study of Nehemiah, we have come to the point where the work of rebuilding the walls and repairing the gates has finally been completed. At this point it would be tempting for Nehemiah to relax his guard, sit back and revel in his own faithfulness and ingenuity. But Nehemiah knew that he owed all praise to God for the near-miraculous completion of the walls in fifty-two days! Join us today as we see him and his companions rejoicing in the faithfulness of God, even as they continue to be wary and on guard against the schemes of the enemy.

As we began to see yesterday, when all else fails, the enemies of the Kingdom of God will sometimes resort to threatening those who are engaged in the work of the Kingdom. When we paused the message, we were learning that one of the most important ways to combat threats – indeed, ALL of the assaults of Satan! – is to test it by the word of God. Nehemiah responded appropriately, rebuffing the threats by measuring them by what “thus sayeth the Lord.” Join us today as we conclude our examination of opposition through threats against the people of the Kingdom of God.

In our study of the Book of Nehemiah, we are continuing to look at the closing days of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem, and in particular examining the ways in which the enemies of the Kingdom of God launch their desperate assaults. We have looked at opposition through compromise, and we have looked at opposition through slander. Today, we begin looking at opposition through threats. The threat against Nehemiah’s life was actually a conspiracy among enemies both within and without the Jewish leaders. Join us today as we begin to look at the ways in which threats can hinder the work of the Kingdom.

As we began to see yesterday, slander can be a very effective tool in Satan’s toolbox! In this case, the enemies of the Kingdom of God began to spread lies about Nehemiah and his colleagues in an effort to get the King of Persia to stop the great work of the Kingdom. This type of assault is still very effective today! Too often, slander begins to spread both within and without the church, and much damage is caused thereby. So how do we deal with slander? Join us today as we begin to see how Nehemiah calmly faced this assault, and ultimately did not let it hinder his great work in the Kingdom of God.

As we continue to deal with the last-minute attacks of the enemies of the Kingdom of God, we come to another weapon in Satan’s arsenal: slander. Sanballat and his henchmen began to spread lies about Nehemiah and the Jews, and even wrote an open letter to the king and others that accused them of rebellion. Slander is indeed a very effective tool that is often used against God’s people. Join us today as we begin to look at what slander is, and how to deal with it.

As we began to see yesterday, Satan often mounts his strongest attacks as the finish line is in view! One of his most dangerous tactics is the temptation to compromise. In this chapter, we have begun to see how the enemies of the Kingdom of God are watching the work of the Kingdom and looking for openings, and in this case began to tempt Nehemiah to meet with them and compromise. But Nehemiah knew that there is no basis for cooperation between the Kingdom of God and the kingdoms of men! Join us today as we see how Nehemiah resisted the persistent temptations to compromise the work of the Kingdom of God.

As we continue our study in the book of Nehemiah, we have come to the point where the walls are almost completed. Often when we see the “finish line” in view, we tend to let down our guard and “slack up.” But rather than slacking up in his diligence, Nehemiah knew he had better focus even more intently! It is often at the moment of near victory when Satan mounts his most subtle attacks! The first way that he does this is through temptation to compromise. As we saw in the first half of this sermon, the regenerated child of God stands without condemnation before God because of the finished work of Christ. Today, we continue along this line of Paul’s reasoning by seeing that there are those who are “after the flesh” (i.e., unregenerated) and those that are “after the Spirit” (i.e., regenerated). It is this distinction that makes us debtors no longer to the flesh and to the Law, but to the Spirit and Christ, to live in a way that pleases Him because of what He has done for us! In Romans 8, Paul opens the chapter with the glorious declaration that there is therefore NOW no condemnation to those who are “in Christ Jesus.” That phrase “in Christ Jesus” refers to our condition as regenerated children of God, and NOT to our conduct. Because we have been born again, the Law no longer claims us and no longer condemns us! As we move on toward the end of Chapter 7 of Romans, Paul continues to teach us about the Law in our lives. In these verses, we learn that the biggest problem is that the Law is spiritual but we are carnal. Paul tells us of the continual struggle between the two “laws” that he sees in his life: the law of God, and the law of Sin. Join us as we deal with the problem of the Law in our lives.

In the first half of this sermon, we were looking primarily at the place of the Law in our lives. As we began to see, we are no longer under the Law – in fact, we are “dead” to the Law. Indeed, we are wed to another Husband: the Lord Jesus Christ. But the Law still serves a purpose in our lives, and we need to understand that purpose. In short, the Law instructs us about the holiness of God and ultimately shows us just how exceeding sinful sin really is in the sight of God! Paul begins the seventh chapter of Romans by reminding us that, as children of God, we are dead to the Law but married to Christ. In doing so, he is dealing with the constant struggle that regenerated disciples have between the two ditches of legalism and lawlessness. When we paused the message last time, we were learning that, not only is there a difference between “wages” and a “gift,” but there is also a vast difference between a “gift” and an “offer.” Nowhere in Scripture do we read about salvation being “offered” to anyone here on earth! Rather, we find that salvation is a completed gift from God to man, and that it hinges not upon our acceptance but upon us being “made accepted” in the beloved. In our daily struggle of discipleship, one of the most important things that will help us is to remember to thank God for freeing us from the bondage of sin. When we paused the message yesterday, we were learning that our self image should be different after we are born again. In our Christian self image, we should no longer see sin in the same way; rather than acceptable, we should see it as reprehensible. Today, we look more particularly at how we likewise should not see ourselves as we were before. We are new creatures, quickened by Christ into a new life in Him! We have been “baptized” into His death; we have been “crucified” with Him; in fact, we are “dead” with Christ. The old “hollow log” theory of the new birth – that the new birth makes no more difference than a rabbit running through a hollow log – finds no support in Scripture! Join us today as we learn that we ought to see ourselves as new creatures in Christ, and reject the attitudes of the old man.

As we delve back into the Book of Romans, we come to Chapter 6. This chapter begins with a discussion of how we should see ourselves as newly-reborn Christians – i.e., our Christian self image. As we began to see yesterday, the phrase “believeth in Him” does not set conditions on our eternal salvation; rather, it deals with our assurance here and now. As we continue looking at John 3:16, we are examining the main words in this verse to determine what they mean. As it is often said, before you try to understand what a verse means you need to know what the verse says – the words matter! We are currently learning about the word “whosoever,” which the religious world interprets as an invitation to dead alien sinners to accept Jesus and exercise their will to believe in Him. But that is NOT what it means, as we have begun to see! Join us today as we learn that “whosoever” simply means that anyone anywhere who finds himself quickened by the Holy Spirit and trusting in the finished work of Christ has the sweet assurance that he possesses eternal life.

As we continue in our exposition of John 3:16, we come to the word “whosoever.” Once again, the religious world generally misinterprets the significance of this word. Most of the time we hear that “whosoever” means that a dead alien sinner has the ability to exercise his will in order to become a believer, and thereby inherit eternal life. But as we have already learned, John 3:16 is not a verse of invitation, but a verse of assurance! Thus, we will see that “whosever” doesn’t place a burden on men to get themselves saved, but rather points us to the glorious truth that God has a people in all kinds of places, from all different races. And no matter what their circumstances are, each and every one of these “whosoevers” WILL be saved!

There is much confusion in the religious world about the meaning of John 3:16. As we close out chapter five of Nehemiah today, we finish up our consideration of the problem of selfishness among God’s people. Nehemiah did not tolerate this sin, but he confronted it directly. In our study of Nehemiah, we are currently in the fifth chapter where we find that selfishness has become manifest among the workers in Jerusalem. The rich were exploiting the poor for gain, thereby going directly contrary to the Law of Moses. Nehemiah did not let the problem fester; rather, he called a great assembly of the people and dealt with the issue head-on. Last time, we saw that selfishness had arisen among the workers on the walls of Jerusalem. Some of the Jews were taking advantage of their brethren, giving rise to internal dissension. As we continue our study in Nehemiah chapter 4, we see how Nehemiah and his colleagues built the walls while battling the enemies. They had a sword in one hand, and a trowel in the other! In Nehemiah 4:18, we find that “the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded.” In the face of opposition to the work of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, Nehemiah and his workers had to set a watch while they worked. In much the same way, we battle as we build today! Join us as we consider the fact that we are in a battle while laboring in the Kingdom, and we must set a guard while we work.

As Nehemiah and his colleagues rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, they found themselves opposed at every turn by the enemies of the Kingdom of God. Because of this, we read in chapter four, verse 17, that “every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.” They battled while they built, they watched while they worked! Join us as we consider how we must also be watchful while we do the work of the Kingdom of God.

In our study of the Book of Nehemiah, we have been looking at the efforts of the children of Israel to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem after returning from the Babylonian Captivity. We have seen that, very soon into the project, the laborers became discouraged, not just because of persecution, but also because there was “much rubbish” laying around from when the walls were torn down. “Rubbish” that gets in the way of the work often causes discouragement. As we began to see yesterday, external opposition often leads to internal problems. In this case, the opposition of the enemies of the Kingdom began to dishearten the Jews, so that they experienced discouragement and fear. As the Jews began to work on the walls of Jerusalem, the enemies of the Kingdom of God began to rise up in opposition. The enemy is always upset when the Kingdom of God prospers! One of the first kinds of opposition that arose was opposition through ridicule, which can be a very formidable obstacle to the work of the Kingdom. As we began to see yesterday, there were many different kinds of people from many different backgrounds who worked to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. There were priests, pharmacists, stoneworkers, and farmers. Much like the church of God today, the Kingdom of God in that day was made up of many different people from many walks of life, but God used them all in the rebuilding of His Kingdom. As we began to see yesterday, Nehemiah had the challenge of building back the walls of Jerusalem that had been broken down. He didn’t sit around bemoaning the sad state of the Kingdom: he started working on the walls! As we continue looking at the life and work of Nehemiah, we find him now in the right place for the right work: Jerusalem, the visible capital of the earthly Kingdom of God in that day. His challenge was that the walls were broken down and the gates were burned with fire, and the reproach of all the world was upon the City of God. Is that not the challenge for the church today? The walls of doctrine are broken down, and the mockery of the world is against us! Join us today as we see how Nehemiah approached this problem, and learn some lessons about how we are to do the same today.

Today we turn to another practice that is peculiar to the Primitive Baptists: the foot washing service. Jesus Christ Himself gave us this example when He knelt down after the institution of the communion service and washed the disciples’ feet. He tells us that we “ought” to do this, and that we will be happy if we do. Join us today as we explore the foot washing service and come to a better understanding of why we engage in this practice.

As Nehemiah mourned about the sad state of the children of God in Jerusalem, he prayed fervently and purposed to bring the matter before the king. But he had the faith to wait on the Lord’s time, and in that time the Lord blessed him with an opportunity to help God’s people. When he heard about the shameful state of the Kingdom of God in Jerusalem, Nehemiah was greatly affected. In the Book of Nehemiah, we read about God’s rebuilding program for His Kingdom on earth. With the Lord’s blessings, we are starting a series today on this important book of the Old Testament. As we began to see yesterday, the Bible gives us many examples of those who came to “see Jesus.” Sometimes, we ourselves get to the point that we don’t see Jesus! In our series on the Book of Revelation, Elder Buddy Abernathy has been teaching from chapter 16 about the final judgment of God. The seven angels with the seven vials of judgment illustrate in symbolic fashion what will happen when the wrath of God is fully and finally poured out upon the wicked men of the earth. As we began to see in the last sermon, the seven angels with the seven vials represent the final judgment of God upon the wicked, which will be poured out at the end of time. In Chapter 16 of Revelation, we see the seven angels pouring out the seven vials of God’s judgment upon those who are not children of God. The Book of Revelation is generally a summary of how God will judge the wicked, both in time and eternity, and thereby deliver God’s people. Chapter 15 gives us a scene in heaven of the seven angels with the seven last plagues. In the midst of the celebration, the children of God in heaven sing the song of Moses, praising God for His deliverance! In the verses we examine today, we find imagery of the second coming of Christ and the final judgment of the wicked. As we continue examining Revelation 14:13, we see clearly that the idea of our “works following us” does not mean that we work our way into heaven. Neither does it mean that we have greater rewards in heaven based on our conduct on earth! Rather, it means that we enjoy a little “heaven on earth” when we live righteously in this present evil word, and that when we transition to the eternal world we simply enjoy in fullness what we enjoyed in part here in this time world.

We continue today in Chapter 4 of Revelation, where we have been hearing about of the gospel being preached to the Gentiles. Verse 12 tells us about the “patience of the saints,” which teaches us that the truth of ultimate and final judgment of God upon the wicked is what inspires us to “keep on keeping on” in this life. In verse 13, we begin to see what it means when John writes, “their works do follow them.” Join us today as we learn what this verse really means. Hint: it does NOT mean we work our way to heaven!
