Forklift Certification involves training on two broad topics: forklift operation and workplace safety. Nearly 100 workers are killed annually and 20,000 are seriously injured because safety measures are not followed. See The Importance of Forklift Safety Training for more information around forklift accidents and the costs thereof.

Between 1980 and 2001, there were 1,530 fatal forklift accidents (Source: National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities (NTOF) Surveillance System).

Amongst these fatalities are deaths occurring because of the forklift overturning, hitting a pedestrian, falling from the forklift and being crushed by a forklift. These accidents represent the top 67 % of the total 1,530 deaths and are easily prevented with proper forklift training and safety measures in the workplace.

Be Safe - Forklift Certification

In the United States employers are required to ensure that any of their employees that operate a forklift have the appropriate training (OSHA Powered Industrial Trucks Safety Standard 1910.178 paragraph 1910.178(l)(7)).

Paragraph 1910.178(l)(4)(iii) of the same standard determines that operators must be evaluated at least once every three years.

The details of this evaluation must be formally recorded and must include the employees name, the training and evaluation dates and the trainers identity.

Other reasons for renewing an operator’s forklift certification include:

  • The employee has driven the lift truck in a manner that endangers themselves or other or that is deemed in any way as unsafe
  • The employee is required to operate another type of forklift
  • Workplace conditions change in a way that affects workplace safety or the safe operation of the forklift
  • The employee was involved in an accident or a near-miss
  • The employee was evaluated and was deemed to be operating the life truck in an unsafe manner

If you’re an employer, it is your obligation to ensure that your employee’s are certified and regularly evaluated. This keeps your workplace safe, reduces your liability and can improve the cost
efficiency of your business.

Please remember that these rates are to be used as an indication of what you should be paid. What you actually earn will differ based on your location, the type of qualifications and experience you have and which industry you work in.

According to some indicators, for e.g. this article Forklift Business Up, the forklift sales industry is improving which can be a good indicator for jobs in the industry!

Financial Advice


 
When it comes to money and budgets, the best advice I have ever received consisted of the following 5 points which may prove helpful to you:

  • Make sure that you earn as much as you can. When budgeting, it’s not just about saving money, it’s also about making sure that you earn what you are worth. Don’t settle for less.
  • Save as much as you can. I experience constant pressure from all around me to spend spend spend. Don’t give in – you’ll find if you don’t that your money becomes more valuable to you, as well as the things that you eventually do purchase.
  • Don’t hoard. As simple as that. Declutter your life on a regular basis, when you clear out the stuff you aren’t using it helps bring clarity to future purchases (reminds you of how much you have paid for things you don’t use) and helps increase the value of the things that you use on a regular basis.
  • Be generous. There is great joy to be found in giving to other people, especially those that can’t repay you.
  • Celebrate life! You have only one life, don’t regret it, make it count!

Forklift Driver Salary

We have used a couple of sources for our research and have also done some manual checking on the advertised wages for forklift operators on different job boards in the US.

These rates should be used as indicators only. Your earnings could differ significantly based on factors such as the city that you live in, the type of forklift truck you are qualified to operate, your experience in the industry as well as the specific industry that you work in.

You’ll notice that there are sometimes two graphs below, one for “Forklift Driver” and another for “Fork Lift Operator”. I’ve included both to give a better picture of the industry.

Bonus Bonus Bonus!!!

 
If your employer values your hard work they will make an effort to pay you a bonus, even if it’s something small it means an opportunity for you to settle some debt, spoil a loved one or get something awesome for yourself.

PayScale provides a breakdown of bonus potential based on the number of years experience you have. What’s interesting for me from these stats, both the median income and median bonus seems a tad on the low side for the 20 years or more experienced drivers. I’d be interested to know if you have 20 years experience or more whether you find this to be accurate. Let me know in the comments below.

 

Skills and Cities

 
As we said above, your potential earnings will differ based on the city and industry you work in, as well as the experience and skills you have. In the two graphs below you can see the crucial skills and most popular cities based on the sample data that PayScale has:

 
As you can see from the core skills graph above, although the sample is a touch on the small side for our liking, it does bear out the importance of forklift certification with “Driver/Core Development” one of the top skills.

These are indicators only and should be used as a guide to make sure that you are not paying too much for your forklift training.

Depending on which company you work for, the company may sponsor your training, so if you think you can’t afford to pay for the training yourself, keep a look out for jobs offering to sponsor you.

The other costs that you might have to cover, again depending on your employer, is the cost of your own protective clothing. Many employers also require that you have your own transport.

]]> A forkie is only as good as his tools! Driving a lift truck is a dangerous job and requires training in order for the operator and his colleagues to remain safe. Check out our section on Forklift Safety for more safety tips and resources.

As with the use of any power tool (a forklift is basically one big power tool!), there is some safety gear that can be worn to help make the job safer and more comfortable.

Listed below are some examples of the items that you will find useful as a forkie:

1. High Visibility Vest

The number one thing you can wear to make you safer is something that makes you more visible.

Whether it’s a high visibility vest or jacket, make sure that you and your colleagues wear this everyday! A vest that is lightweight and breathable is best.

2. Hardhat

Protect your head – you only have one! – from falling objects!

Get a Hard Hat that is lightweight, strong and has an adjustable strap so that you can wear it comfortably for your entire shift – and maybe when you go for drinks after work!

3. Steel toe boot

A comfortable pair of shoes can make the difference between a tired, grumpy forkie and a forkie with a bounce in their step and smile on their face!

Don’t skimp here, get shoes that are so comfortable you will want to sleep with them on. Make sure that they have a steel toe to give you that extra bit of protection.

The more durable they are, the more durable you will be – and the longer they will last.

4. Safety Glasses

You need to be able to see in order to drive a lift truck.

Enough said.

Well, maybe a little more: get safety glasses that are free of distortions, tough enough to resist impact and scratches and comfortable enough to wear for long, sweaty shifts!

5. Danger Forklift Signage

Make your workplace a safer place for everybody – put up signs reminding everybody that this is a dangerous area to be in.

Forklifts are extremely useful tools, but they are also very dangerous. Keep safe people (and keep those OSHA inspectors happy!).

6. Forearm Lifting Straps

If your job involves a bit of manual lifting and handling, consider an OSHA accepted moving tool for reducing potential injuries.

If you have to get off your truck, you may as well make life easier (and safer) for yourself by making sure that you have the right off-the-truck tools. Get these and become more efficient – always good to impress the boss!

7. Performance Handling Gloves

You’re a forkie. Go get some decent gloves! You need to keep those hands clean and smooth for the missus… :)

Get a pair that help make the day-time action easier so you can get some action!

Bear in mind that the job market varies significantly in different countries and that different currencies have different purchasing power.

Remember also that the industries that are available to you as a forklift operator are significantly varied (from airports, to lumber yards to the military) and there are many different types of forklift that you could specialize in.  These factors, in addition to training and experience will impact on your earning potential.

The bottom line is be open to learning new skills, seek out niche industries or specialist lift trucks and always seek to go the extra mile for your employer and you should find plenty of opportunity.

In all seriousness, anybody who is not qualified or authorised to drive a forklift could be a serious hazard in the workplace and could expose your employer to some hefty fines and/or lawsuits.

Stationary forklift tip #2:

A forklift is basically a cordless power tool – make sure to switch off your forklift when not in use as it poses a real danger to people and stray animals. Switching off can also save a small amount of energy which is good for the planet.

Stationary forklift tip #3:

Make sure that you regularly inspect the vehicle for any signs of damage or wear and tear. A brake cable hanging by its last thread is not a safe forklift. Bonus free tip: keep your forklift serviced within the manufacturers guidelines to prevent a possible fault-related accident.
