Designed by the architectural practice of Wingardhs, Emporia is an urban planning project which includes offices, housing and retail spaces on the Hyllie Boulevard 19 in Malmo, Sweden.

The project was the winner of a competition and the designers tried to conceal the retail while putting the residential and commercial buildings in front in order that the entire complex would be integrated into the city’s existing fabric.

The colossal development will take a long time to complete and only the corner building with the Amber Entrance was completed which will be the only part of the Emporia shopping center which will remain visible in the end. The retail will be organized around a figure eight pattern which will cover three floors and the shops will be grouped around atriums with different themes.

The rooftop will host a park with sheltered patios, outdoor dining and a spa facility along with possible new attractions such as amusement parks or shopping centers. The designer’s motto was “no intermediate scale” so that large-scale patterns and minute details are the main characteristics of the interior.

Located in the city of Alicante, Spain near the Mediterranean Sea, this project is the transformation of an old railway station into an office for Casa Mediterraneo, a non-profit institution which tries to foster the relations between the villages of the Mediterranean basin.

The project was designed by the architectural practice of Manuel Ocana del Valle by transforming it into a space where the organization can set an example and also carry out its program efficiently. The original structure was preserved as much as possible as a reminder of its heritage and the new project tried to emphasize its bold lines.

The railway station spread over a surface of 3100 square meters and the designers separated this huge space into several smaller pavilions and a 1500 square meter hall which will be the setting for various events, parties and exhibitions.

The illumination of the project is natural during the daytime since it uses so much glass and the ventilation is also natural ensuring a sustainable design.

The Kontum Indochine Café was designed by the practice of Vo Trong Nghia Architects with fifteen conical bamboo columns supporting the roof, a shape which is representative for the Vietnamese fishing baskets.

The project is located at the Kontum Indochine Hotel in the central Vietnam and it functions as the restaurant and banquet hall of the hotel providing open-air dining with a great view of the Dakbla River and the mountains.

The roof of the restaurant has layers of thatch and reinforced plastic along the bamboo and the openings in it allow natural light inside. Due to the water surrounding the restaurant and the overhanging roof, the restaurant doesn’t need any air conditioning and the clients are protected during the rainy season.

The water is crossed through bridges which give access to the café from three sides and the kitchen annex is on the other side, built with concrete frames and stones to provide a contrast to the rest.

Dubai is one of the most extravagant places on the planet since it features an impressive amount of architectural wonders and it has recently received a new addition to its skyline with the Cayan Tower, which was formerly known as the Infinity Tower before its opening in 10 June 2013.

The designers of the project are the Skidmore, Owings and Merrill SOM architectural group, the same group who built the Burj Khalifa project and the Trump Tower in Chicago.

The specific characteristic of the project is its twisted shape, which makes it the tallest twisted tower in the world with a height of 310 meters and 75 floors. The tower is twisted by 90 degrees from top to bottom and since it features an open space concept it manages to stand without the need of pillars in its structure.

The project’s cost reached 272 million US dollars and the Cayan Real Estate Investment and Development Company announced that 80 percent of the residential units in the tower have already been sold. Some of its other amenities include a swimming pool, a whirlpool, spa, massage rooms, a nursery and a gym.

The Nobu Hotel is located in the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and it was designed by the architectural practice of Rockwell Group to offer a different experience which illustrates the Nobu lifestyle.

The hotel tries to blend the Eastern and Western styles through the combination of the Japanese design with over the top elements specific to the Las Vegas flamboyance. The hotel becomes a place where you can find the color and graphics specific to the Japanese while there is also a place for calm and natural elements to ensure that comfort and relaxation is close at hand.

The master bedrooms of the suites offer Jacuzzi tubs and Toto toilets and six of the suites also include Media rooms while eight of them have pool tables.

The dining area is also characteristic of the playful Nobu style with undulating screens and oversized light fixtures to make the space as entertaining as possible. The restaurant also features a bar and a lounge and the central dining room has private dining pods as well.

Located in Bratislava, Slovakia, the Riverpark Apartment was designed by the practice of Beef Architecture with a warm interior that uses a lot of textures and materials to create a calm and comfortable home.

From the pictures you can probably notice the abundant use of wood in the design, this feature making the interior have a natural ambiance and also gives it a raw tone, although still in the modern aesthetic without becoming rustic.

All this wood adds texture and there are accents of “café au lait” which further emphasize the warm tone while also creating a transition between the wooden flooring and the white ceiling.

The apartment has an open design with the living area connected to the dining area and the kitchen so that they become a single space thus allowing more natural light to pass throughout the interior without the need of extra illumination.

The White Lodge is a home designed by the practice of Dyer Grimes Architects with a highly modern look which offers all the luxury of the city life along with the peace and quiet offered by the country life.

Located in Tandridge, England, the site for the building was originally a detached bungalow with trees surrounding it and a good view of the Surrey Downs district which still has a lot of traditional homes with pitched roofs.

The construction permit was problematic to obtain since the proposed project was unprecedented in the area and also had to be submitted to the strict Tanbridge Council requirements, while the site also offered some problems with the sight due to its slopes.

The designers created a very modern home which covers a surface of 480 square meters and takes advantage of the latest technologies and materials to provide a highly efficient residence. The White Lodge is also friendly to its environment through the use of solar hot water collectors on the roof, a sustainable drainage system, an air source heat pump and renewable energy sources to produce some of the energy required.

The architectural practice Proiect Bucuresti designed the Craiova Football Stadium in Romania to replace the existing “Ion Oblemenco” Stadium.

The project will have seats for 40000 spectators and its shape, especially the roof, is a tribute to the “Miss Pogany” sculpture created by Constantin Brancusi. The volume of the structure will attract attention during the daytime and through the architectural lighting it will become a beacon of light during the night time when it will be visible from the center of the town.

The stadium wished to achieve the UEFA IV category (the highest one) and it will host events from the 1st Romanian Football League, the UEFA Europe League, The Champions League and the National team matches.

The dimensions of the playing field are the standard 105mx68m and the surface will be natural grass with heating, irrigation, drainage and ventilation. There will be two levels of seating located close to the playing field to ensure optimum visibility and between the seats will be the VIP skyboxes.

The project uses sustainable materials and technologies such as photovoltaic cells, ground source heating and deep well water sources.

This original project was designed by the practice of Moriyuki Ochiai Architects/TwoPlus-A for the Hana (which in Japanese means “flower”) restaurant and bar in Tokyo, Japan as a physical expression of the Japanese passion for flowers.

One of the most characteristic aesthetic ideas that the Japanese promote is the desire to create complex structures from a few materials and in this case aluminum was the singular element used in the construction of the three dimensional sculptural decoration.

Due to the flexibility and lightness of the aluminum it could be easily creased into the structure we see in the pictures which covers the ceiling with flower-like bends to give the space a distinct atmosphere which is adapted to the purpose of each individual room.

The illumination of the space is significantly enhanced through the reflections created by the aluminum and various flickers begin to appear as the clients move through the space to provide new experiences each time. Another important feature of this “flower garden” is its mobility and this allowed the designers to use similar themes in some of their other projects as well.
