🔎 Aim at setting up a smooth base for better makeup application.

❓ How It Works // Use as a makeup primer or a face primer on no-mu days.

✔️ Suitable For // I want to say “universal”, but think it’s better for oilier skin as it has a mattifying effect. I notice my face is not as oily when using this vs other primers.
✔️ Foundation-Free // I apply this to face, cover spots with concealer, + blush, fill in eyebrows & dust face w/translucent powder. No need for foundation & skin still looks polished!
✔️ Velvety Soft // I have issue with pores & once applied, it smooths pores out, so it’s possible to wear this alone. With makeup, this helps set a smooth base for foundation application.
✔️ Comes with Sun Protection // SFP 20 & PA++ (Titanium Dioxide+Octinoxate). You guys know how much I ❤️ this benefit!
✔️ A Little Goes A Long Way // Only need a nickel size. At $45 USD per bottle, this is a huge help!

❌ Not Suitable For // I can’t think of anything to call out except what I mentioned above.
❌ Some Unhappy Users // While there’s a consensus that this helps keep makeup in place, some argue that they haven’t seen any pore-minimizing or blemish-reducing benefits. I am able to benefit from both of these, but every skin is different. Hence, my next point...

// Tips on Organizing Your Many Look-Alike Bottles //

• Place a piece of scotch/clear tape on each bottle and write the product name or product type on the tape.
• Using scotch/clear tape as bottle labels makes it super easy to remove when your trip is done.  Trust me, removing those white sticky label was painful!

// Tips on Downsizing Your Skincare //

• I normally rotate among 2-3 different items for each step and I'm sure many of you do the same. Unless you're traveling for more than a month, my advice is to choose your most favorite one from the rotation and bring just 1 item per step. Every little bottle starts to add up in weight and space and it's best to save yourself the headache of dragging heavy suitcases around.
• If you feel like you're really missing out on certain pampering by not bringing all your normal options, opt for treatment items (discussed below) that tend to be smaller in size (think sheetmasks or sample-size/pod-size items).

I'm a huge fan of Mulberry - There's something about its simple yet elegant designs that really draws me in.  I started with the Bayswater Small Shoulder Bag, which is considered to be the brand's iconic style and gradually added to my collection with other classics such as the Lily. 

During my deal hunt on July 4th weekend, I spotted a sale event on Mulberry U.S. website (About 20% to 30% off) that included some of their classic and popular styles such as Lily and Bayswater.  I shared that on my Instagram feed...hopefully all of you Mulberry fans out there were able to take advantage of that! 

I know that even with the discounts, their bags are still not cheap, but the only other times I'd see such discounts is from flash sale sites such as Rue La La with one downside - Luxury bag flash sale is often final/non-returnable.

This time, I was being very good and only purchased these two...Continue reading below to see my detailed reviews of them.

Bayswater Clutch in Black //  Mulberry clutch is one of Princess Kate's favorite accessories, so I figure I can't go wrong with having one for myself!  I love Bayswater and own the small shoulder bag.  This clutch does not disappoint - It's such a classic piece and can be used as a clutch for more formal settings (remove the chain) or as a crossbody for more casual activities.  It's a perfect day-to-night bag.  It's also a good size for travels and sightseeing with different compartments built in to help keep things organized. P.S. Photo shows iPhone 6.

Buying Recommendation //  If this is your first Mulberry purchase, I recommend getting something from the Bayswater collection.  If you're trying to keep your budget down, this clutch is a great choice because you can get many uses out of it (casual and formal events).  If you can stretch your budget, the iconic Bayswater small shoulder bag would be a good investment as well. 

Mini Lily in Neon Blue //  I have a medium Lily in pale yellow (limited-time color and no longer available) and want to add another one to my collection.  I know that this mini would be on the small side, but I am surprised by how mini it really is.  The iPhone 6 barely fits in there and stretches the bag beyond its normal shape.  Because the Lily's design is a bit more playful or casual than the clutch, I find it more suitable for daytime and this mini version won't fit extra items I bring along such as sunnies and sunscreen (after putting essentials in).

Buying Recommendation //  If you're shopping for your first Mulberry, I recommend getting the Bayswater clutch as mentioned above.  If you prefer the Lily and can stretch your budget, I recommend getting the medium size and only consider this mini version for your later purchases.  I myself am considering returning this because it's not a very practical piece for what I need.

I bought a Voluspa candle (Bellini scent) years ago and have been a fan every since.  They are pricey though, so I save it for special occasions or maybe a stressful day.  I love this trio set not only for the value (see below for "the math"), but also the soft pastel colors.  Similar to the Diptyque set above, this also makes great gifts for your friends.

~ About the Nordstrom Credit Card ~

I feel the need to say a few words about this - I am seeing many bloggers advocating readers to apply for the Nordstrom card in order to gain early access to this sale.  I don't know how many of them are sponsored by the retailer.  From my retail days (working in the buying office and in the store), retailers always try to convince you to apply for their cards because they make quite a nice profit from interest if balance is not paid in full and it's a way for them to keep your loyalty with them. 

The only thing I want to share is to do what is suitable for your own financial situation.  I own the card because I do shop at Nordstrom and Norstrom Rack often (have been since I was in college) and I can truly take advantage of their reward program and their sale events.  I wouldn't recommend getting the card just for this sale or just to gain early access to this sale.  Many items would still be there when the sale starts on 7/22.

I'm always happy to be home, but this trip is super special because I get to see my niece and nephew who are visiting from Hong Kong!  They grow up so fast, and I'm bummed that I don't get to see them more often.  I know they love sweets, so I've already planned out all the dessert places I can take them to!

Speaking of travel, there are certain beauty products I just can't live without.

Dior Nail Glow //  I'm often running errands up until the moment I have to head to the airport, so there's hardly time to spare for a nice mani.  I'm so happy I have this nail polish because even though it goes on clear, once it's dried, it gives my nails this rosy pink glow as if I've had a mani.  If you've used the Dior Addict Lip Glow, it's very similar concept here.  I highly recommend this for both travel and for in between manicures.

Hand Sanitizer //  I know it's not for everyone - My mom gets a rash when she uses it.  If it's suitable for you though, this is something I can't travel without because it's a safe-guard for my own health and sanity.

Eau de Toilette //  I try to buy or ask for a mini version of my favorite scent to stuff in my travel cosmetic bag.  For one thing, I've had to run to connecting flights one too many times and this helps me stay fresh and not scare my seatmates.  You can also use it to guard against your seatmates if they happen to smell not so fresh themselves!

Hand Cream //  Oh how I love hand cream.  I have an embarrassingly large collection, but it's not often that I get my hands on a real mini version for space-saving purposes.  With the skin-drying soaps they use at airports and in-flight, hand cream is a must in my bag!

Lip Gloss //  If I can only bring 5 items to a desert island, lip gloss will for sure be one of the items.  I love the ones that give my lips just a hint of pink color.  I feel so incomplete without one in my bag.

Blotting Paper //  My combo/oily skin gets slightly out of whack during my travels.  Different environment, stress, cabin air - All of that contribute to oilier-than-normal skin and a pack of blotting paper is a must in my cosmetic case!

Cosmetic Case //  I own more cosmetic cases than I'd ever need!  They do come in handy though when you do carry-on only.  I usually go for medium-sized versions, which can double as my skincare bag in order to save room in my luggage.

My brother flew in from Asia and one of his short stops was New York City, so I flew down there to meet up with him.  We had some great meals and museum visits, but of course, when it came to beauty shopping in Korea Town, he opted out.  No worries, my trusted roommate from college @concon95 (who lives in NYC) was more than happy to go with me since she's just starting to dabble into the exciting world of Asian Beauty!

Given my 24-hours time limit in the city, I could only afford to be in K-Town for 1.5 hours.  It's not an issue as it was a Sunday and all the shops were pretty quiet.  I drew up this so-not-to-scale map of the key part of K-Town we ventured to - On West 32nd St, between Broadway and 5th Ave.  In this short block, you can hit all the major K-Beauty brands and taste some super yummy Korean food and desserts.

I've been to a few really great dessert places in NYC, but I've never ventured into K-Town before.  I did some homework prior to arrival and found Grace Street as one of the new faces in the K-Town dessert scene.  It has some rave reviews and it sure did not disappoint! 

P.S. I included 2 honorary mentions on the map for food - BCD Tofu House (which I frequently visit in California and love their tofu stews) and H-Mart (which is a Korean supermarket...I don't think I need to tell you why it's a must-see!)

Taking Skin Care Beyond Rituals and Products - Improving Your Skin Health Through Food

Continuing our skin health journey in this part two of the Skin Health Series.  If you've missed part one, where I've discussed in length the "what" and the "why" behind a multi-steps skin care ritual, I'd recommend reading that first (check it out here).  It'll help you connect to today's story much better!

I also used to focus only on the skin care and the associated products.  Nothing wrong with that at all as they are integral parts of our overall skin health.  At the same time, I've learned that what we eat and how we live also play a key role.

Oh gosh, I love to eat and my favorite foods may not be considered super "healthy".  But similar to skin care, we don't have to follow the trend because the key is to create balance - Eating my beloved Asian desserts every night wouldn't be the best choice for me, so I balance it with fruits on most nights.  Remember, key word here is "balance"!

A friend recently asked me if she should do a detox.  My own experience didn't turn out that great...I almost fainted at work!  I've since opted for adding more fruits and veggies to my eating habits as not to shock my body like that again.  The key here is the same as in skin care - Listen to your body!  For me, my body didn't like detox, so I look for a different way to cleanse my body.  I'll share some my of favorite foods along with their skin health benefits and super easy recipes that you can make! 

I'm sharing my personal skin health journey with you and, same with skin care products, foods or habits that my body takes in well may or may not work for you.  Always listen to your body and cater to your own needs.  Also, always consult with your family doctor or nutritionist on any dietary needs or if you have any pre-existing health conditions.

As I was thinking about how I should write this post, I realize there are soooooo many nutrients and foods that have great skin health benefits and I can probably write a 100-pages blog post about them all!  But of course, who has the time to read that and I definitely want to give you something that you can easily absorb and, more importantly, take action on!  So I've narrowed down to these 3 "super hero" nutrients based on the foods I eat regularly and on the promise that the recipes are super easy to make.

Now it's time to feed our skin some yummy goodness!

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a terrible cook!  Fortunately, my mom has some exceptional cooking skills and I occasionally figure out a way to copy some of her causally-whip-together recipes.  She's also probably the healthiest 60+ person I've known and it's because she understands how her food affects her body.  Despite our occasional disagreements, she remains my motivation in my quest to live a balanced life, inside and out.  Enough of my mushy stuff, let's move onto the fun part!

First, I want to share this chart with you - These are the foods I eat regularly and I dub them "Skin Health Super Foods" because they contain the skin health nutrients we've just talked about.

Now that you have a good idea of what skin health goodness these foods provide, I'm going to share below how I incorporate them into my everyday eating habits! I promise you that these are very easy to make!

~ Chia seeds + blueberries ~

Perfect For // Breakfast, Snacks

Substitutions // Any toppings will work!  If you want protein, you can add protein powder or bananas.

~ matcha + bananas ~

Perfect For // Breakfast, Snacks, pre/post workout snack.

Substitutions // You can use any type of milk.  I use almond milk because it's dairy-free.

~ carrots ~

Perfect For // Lunch, Dinner (with entrees or side dishes).

Substitutions // I would stick with carrots as the base and sub green carrots/radishes (if you don't like them) with tomatoes or melons.  You basically want at least two kinds of veggies to get a good flavor.  Note: Tomatoes are not suitable for people with GERD or suffer from heartburn.

~ carrots + beets ~

Perfect For // Lunch, Dinner (with entrees or side dishes).

Substitutions // I would stick with carrots as the base and sub beets (if you don't like them) with tomatoes or melons.  Note: Tomatoes are not suitable for people with GERD or suffer from heartburn.

Perfect For // Breakfast, lunch, pre/post workout snack.

Substitutions // You can use any kind of bread.  Also, you can switch out the toppings, but definitely stick with at least the boiled eggs.

A few friends recently asked me what the steps really are and how they would know what products they should use.  And that prompted me to write this series on skin care ritual and share what I've learned throughout my skin health journey!

I used to dive head first into the products and the trends, but now I realize it's most important for me to first understand the reasons behind each step in the ritual.  When you become well-informed about the "why", then finding products your skin loves comes much easier.  

This is why I look at it as a "ritual" because it is something that allows you to connect at a deeper level with your body.  It is beyond just the mere action of putting products on your face.  And since our skin is the largest organ in our body (yes it's true!), it needs all the love we can give to it, both inside and out!

2. You will become a well-informed skin care lover who will make your own choices and not the choices brands want you to make.

I don't skim on my skin care ritual when I'm on the go for these reasons.

ONE // Most important one - Your skin deserves the best pampering, whether you're at home or not!  I won't compromise my skin health and if it means getting up a little earlier or staying up a littler later, I'll do it.

TWO // Not changing out your products too much will help normalize your skin. Plus, you don't want to be dealing with skin reaction when you're traveling!

THREE // Using the same products that you would at home is the best remedy for homesickness.  As much as I love traveling and seeing new places, I get homesick every now and then.  Seeing familiar things help ease that a little bit.

FOUR // Having a few options for those special treats (sheet masks, clay mask, eye-refreshers, etc) is like carrying a mini-first-aid kit with you in case your skin needs some extra attention in your new location.

I stick with my core products and bring full size or travel size depending on my destination

I know it looks like a lot in this photo, but my core ritual consists of only 8 steps with the rest on rotation depending on how my skin feels.  If I'm visiting home, I bring my full-size since I don't have to worry about multiple transit points or the need to do carry-on only.  If I'm traveling to destinations, then I bring travel-size.

I was bad in my younger years - Worshiped the sun instead of my sunscreen. Sunscreen for face is tricky as it tends to clog pores and not always ideal for oily/combo skin.  However, with new technology in skin care, there are more options these days that are more gentle to the skin.  After some trial & error, I've finally narrowed down to these gentle and lightweight versions that don't stir up the oily pot and work well with layering.  And for those with normal or dry skin, I encourage you to try them out, too, as some of these have great skin care benefits while protecting your face from UV radiations!

The smell of Coppertone is one of those sensorial experience I could never forget.  You just knew when someone’s wearing sunscreen with that intense smell back in those days.  And I think for this and many other reasons, most of us forgo applying sunscreen from the neck down on a normal day.  The truth is that UV rays don't discriminate and it is as harsh on your body skin as it is on your face.  But thank goodness for technology and now we have these less-scented, lightweight, no-white-streak options that don't make us go "ewk" while protecting our body skin.

Sheet-Masking with Dr.Jart+

FIT // I have a large head and it still covers my entire face.

FABRIC // The fabric is of high quality and is super soft.  According to Sephora, it is "made of soft microfiber finer than a strand of hair".  Definitely feels good on the skin.

ESSENCE // The mask is drenched with essence and there’s quite a bit leftover inside the pack (which I used on my neck, chest & hands).  The texture of the essence is a semi-milky form that gets absorbed quickly once rubbed onto skin.  When I took off the mask after 20+ minutes (longer than instructed), it was still soaked with essence!

RESULT // Skin feels soft and moisturized.  I notice my skin is brighter, but I am not sure if I notice any dark spot improvement.  I don't really expect to see that particular result since, with any skin brightening products, it sometimes takes consistent long-term usage to really see the difference.

FINAL THOUGHT // This is worth the USD $9.00 (at Sephora) and probably as good as the slightly more expensive Shiseido White Lucent Power Brightening Mask, which I also saw a noticeable brighter complexion after each use.

If you have read my post on Diptyque, you know I'm addicted to the rose scent.  Naturally, the Rose et Reines is my favorite of the 3 in this gift set. 

L'Occitane uses a proprietary process where rose petals from Grasse, Bulgaria, Morocco, Turkey and Provence are steeped in oil and become saturated with the natural fragrance of the roses.  I probably wouldn't use the hand cream and eau de toilette at the same time as it is quite a powerful fruity scent, but individually, they are just lovely additions to any outfit.

The hand cream also doubles as a nail cream.  It contains shea butter and Vitamin E which helps soften the skin while it strengthens the nails.  I think this will become a regular in my in-flight pampering kit!

The Cherry Blossom is a lighter scent.  Cherry Blossoms bloom in the spring and this scent carries that refreshing and rejuvenating feeling as we welcome spring after a long cold winter.

The star ingredient is a cherry extract from the Luberon region of Provence, France.  "It is because cherry blossoms fly away in the first breeze of spring that they are so rare and precious," says Olivier Baussan, L'Occitane founder.  I can't agree more - Cherry Blossom is one of my favorite flowers as they are so pretty and delicate.  I think that's why I love the pouch so much and have been using it to carry my phone whenever I'm running errands in the neighborhood.

Verbena

I know this sounds absolutely crazy, but the new Spring 2016 Etude House collection smells sooooo good that one may have the urge to taste it!  Of course anything from this brand comes with ultra cute packaging, and the Berry Delicious collection is no exception. 

The cuteness overload starts with these outer cartons, which I refuse to throw out!  Maybe one day, I'd have the time to make some wall art out of all the Etude House cartons.

strawberry body scrub & body milk

What really drew me to Berry Delicious is the body care...especially this thick slice of bread, aka the Strawberry Bread Sponge.  It's cute and hilarious at the same time.  The "bread" is a perfect pairing to the jam-like Strawberry Body Scrub, which contains real strawberry seeds.

The scrub feels great on the skin.  And I come out of the shower smelling like fresh strawberry.  Who doesn't like that?!!!

The complimentary Strawberry Body Milk is true to its name - Super milky form and leaves my skin feeling soft and again smelling like strawberry all over.

strawberry lip jam scrub

If you have kids in the house, you may want to put this lip scrub in a safe place because it could easily pass as something edible!  The label design resembles that of a jar of jam and it even says "strawberry jam" at the top of the label.

The texture of the scrub is a bit sticky and contains real strawberry seeds, walnut shell powder and sweet sugar grains.  It doesn't feel harsh on the lips though.

Application is very simple - Apply on wet lips, gently massage all over and then wash off with lukewarm water.  This is great to do once a week to remove dead skin and promote circulation on the lips.  However, if you have chapped lips or dry lips, I do not recommend using any lip scrub as this process will further irritate the skin on your lips.  My go-to for chapped lips has always been Vasaline Lip Therapy...it's my lip life-saver.

These lippies are extensions of Etude House Color In Liquid Lips collection, but of course, these come with the deliciously-smelling strawberry scent.    

The applicator has been modified for Berry Delicious - It is now slightly angled, which makes for easier handling and more precise application.  I know the 2 colors I've picked appear to be similar in this shot, but if you look at swatches below, you'll see the difference.

I've included 2 colors from the original Color In Liquid Lips collection for comparisons (they are marked in black letters).  In fact, Berry Delicious PK 013 is pretty similar to Original BE 101.  I've also mentioned this in my other Etude House post - It's best to prep with some lip balms as these Liquid Lips tend to dry up the lips after a while.

And this is how OR 207 (top) & PK 013 (bottom) look on my lips.  One thing to note is that OR 207 does look more red in real life and PK 013 is more pink/mauve.  It's a bit hard to tell in the photo.

Last but not least, Berry Delicious' eye shadow palette.  I'm not a huge eye-makeup person, but I can see myself using some of these colors as there is a good mix of natural and shimmery choices.

I have picked #8 Strawberry Fondue.  The names of the colors are just lovely - Hazelnut Chocolate, Berry Milk Chocolate, Sugary Butter, Cheese Berry, Fresh Strawberry, Dip!Dip!  I feel like I'm in a candy store.

Here are swatches in the exact same order. The pink & beige shimmery colors (last 2 on the far right) are not too heavy in the shimmer, so they are good for daytime use as well.
