BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 Coming to Bell Mobility August 12th

BlackBerry Curve 9300 (codename Kepler), now called as BlackBerry Curve 3G by Bell, would be coming to Bell Mobility in Canada on August 12th. The BlackBerry Curve 9300 is slightly better version of 8500 series devices and as per the leaked sources on the Internet, 9300 will have 3G and HSPA, built in GPS, WiFi with UMA, 624 Mhz processor and 256 MB RAM. It will have 320×240 screen with 2MP camera without flash. Since is doesn’t have 512 MB RAM, it may not carry upcoming BlackBerry 6 OS but chances are it will have hybrid OS with partial features of OS 6.

As per the above latest image, Bell Mobility in Canada will be the first to offer this device and T-Mobile in US and Rogers in Canada will be offering this device too.

So as per the leaked 9300 specs, it hasn’t changed too much from its 8500 series devices, will you switch if you currently have an 85xx device?

RIM Announces BlackBerry Protect – Wirelessly Backup, Restore Remote Wipe And Locate Your Lost Blackberry

RIM has officially announced the BlackBerry Protect (formerly known as BlackBerry Shield) which will be available as a limited, private beta through the BlackBerry Beta Zone later in this week. There are already few free and premium apps available from the 3rd party developers which does the same remote device management. Check out following key features of BlackBerry Protect.

Remote Device Management:

Protect important information on a lost BlackBerry smartphone by remotely wiping or locking the device from your desktop
Remotely add contact information to the home screen of a locked BlackBerry smartphone so it can be returned if found
See your BlackBerry smartphone’s location and pinpoint the current whereabouts of a lost or stolen device with cell tower and GPS device tracking
Find a nearby misplaced BlackBerry smartphone by remotely activating a loud ringer

WordPress for BlackBerry Updated to Version 1.3

WordPress for BlackBerry app has been updated to version 1.3 which includes new formatting toolbar and easier comments management option. This is one of the must have free app for bloggers who are using WordPress.org CMS on their self hosted blogs.

Version 1.3 adds the following features:

Option to load more comments, not just the latest 100
Ability to load comments by status (all/spam/pending)
You can now edit the comment details (Author Name/E-mail/URL)

A much requested formatting toolbar that allows you to bold text for example
A new word count feature is shown on the post/page write screen
You can now submit bug reports and feedback from within the app

Google Voice Now Open for Everyone in US

Out of all other Google Apps available for BlackBerry, I use the Google Voice and Google Maps more often as compared to other Google Apps on my BlackBerry. It’s a good idea to have one universal phone number for any number of devices specially if you are frequently changing phone numbers. If you can live without the MMS, you may want to check out Google Voice as it offers lots of convenient features.

Now for users living in US do not need any invite to use the Google Voice as it’s open to everyone in the US. Just head over to voice.google.com to sign up and then download the BlackBerry app to use it with your new telephone number.

Insert Symbols and Country Flags with Fancy Characters App

Get some fun with your friends and family by inserting fancy characters while chatting with BBM or use some in your BBM status indicator and let them ask you how did you get these? It’s definitely a cool way to use them in your status indicator in BBM.

There is a way where you can get some of these icons without installing any 3rd party apps by using the Unicode characters; but trust me, this process is cumbersome and tedious if you want to use these characters on a regular basis.

The Fancy Characters App for BlackBerry does it very well with affordable price of just $1.49. It provides 250+ Colored Smiles and 250+ Country Flags icons for BBM 5.0. All these icons are categorized with different tabs for easy access to the characters you want.

Once you install Fancy Characters App, you can insert the characters in BlackBerry Messenger, SMS (GSM devices only), PIN messages, Instant Messengers and Emails anywhere you want. The process is very simple. Where ever you want to insert a character, just click the Menu button and you’ll see an option to insert a Fancy Character. A: Go to options-sms and change encoding from 7bit to SC2. Unless you’re on CDMA version. CDMA SMS is very limited and does not support unicode unfortunately though email/pin and other will work.

Q: Can I have more symbols?
A: You have to install "East Asian Language and Input Support" in bb desktop manager.
Those Asian fonts have all unicode characters required. This applies to 5.0 OS mostly. Older devices may lack some symbols.

Q: Why cannot I see colored smiles introduced in v2.0?
A: Those colored smiles works exclusively in BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.0.57 so make sure you update your BBM first if needed.

BlackBerry Status Indicator Icons And Their Meaning

Back in days, I remember how difficult it was to help a friend over the phone to clear all notification icons from her new BlackBerry Bold home screen. Many times, it’s tough for new BlackBerry users too learn all notification icons in few days. Well at that time, I didn’t have this post published else I could have send the link via email.

If you are a new BlackBerry user reading this post or sending a link to fellow new BlackBerry user, do keep in mind that following icon set belongs to the standard themes which are built in with all new BlackBerry devices. It may differ if you’re using custom theme. Also these indicators appear on the Home screen of your BlackBerry device or at the top of the screen in some applications. Depending on your device model and wireless service provider, some of these indicators might not appear.

Phone

Camera and video camera

Camera flash status

Calendar

Battery power level

Do you see any missing icon from the above list? There is one which is not listed above. It appears when you press Menu Button while you are on active phone call and select Enhance Call Audio and then select Boost Bass or Boost Treble. Once you select any of these two, the icon will appear next time when you’re on voice call.
