2009 Will Be Exciting for Brewer Leaders

I ran out of time to finish the site last year, and the time off has given me plenty of time to figure out what I was doing wrong and how to correct it. In a couple weeks the updated 2008 stats will be in the site and all leaderboards that can be added will be there. The 2009 updates (automatic blog posts, leaderboard movements, graphs, etc.) will be under development and will hopefully be released in the first week of the season. Stay tuned!

Doubles leaderboards added

Another day, another leaderboard added. This time you can see how the Brewers have hit 2-baggers. Feel free to check out the All-Time board and the Season board. Unfortunately, I don't have much else to say about it up top, but let's go onto some more observations:

Prince Fielder has more Home Runs than Doubles. I suppose when you can hit yourself home, why rely on your teammates?

Corey Hart has really hit a number of them, having played portions of 5 seasons (really only 3 since in 2004 he had only 1 at bat).

Lyle Overbay leads the way with 53 in a season. I remember in 2004 when he was just a doubles machine.

7 of Robin Yount's seasons are on the list of Top 50. His name is responsible for 14% of the list.

Subscribe to Brewer Leaders RSS feed

I've been doing a lot of updates to the Leaderboards, but I haven't really gotten back to finishing up the blog portion. I made a little splash today when I whipped out our very own RSS feed. The feed will have the last 10 posts, so you can use that to get updates at what's going on here.

I've got a few other things that I need to do today, so I'll recap that later, but I wanted to emphasize that if you want to stay updated then please subscribe!

Wins leaderboards added

Pitchers haven't been getting a lot of love on Brewer Leaders lately. They don't even have their stats on the Player pages and before tonight, only Strike Outs were being tracked. No longer is that the case. I haven't finished the Player page, but the Wins leaderboard has gone live. Check out the All-Time and Season boards.

I had a little scare creating the board when I lost the details for the stored procedure and for some reason I couldn't pull up the data properly, but I got it figured out. I've saved the process and I should only have to do 22 more categories. Just think what the navigation bar will look like with 27 All-Time and Season stats. It's gotten a little crazy, and would have been fine if I just kept with All-Time, so I'm going to have to play around with the navigation to make it look nicer. More than likely the links won't be on each page, but will have to go to a boards landing page. We'll see.

But here's some observations again:

117 wins is the most? Wow, that's crazy and really goes to show we haven't had too many pitchers stay with us over the years. Ben Sheets is at 83 and if he signs with us again, will have a great chance to set the mark, but I have a bad feeling that he'll leave us through free agency.

Only 3 20 wins seasons. I can now see that Chris Capuano's run in 2005 was such a big deal, it's a nice number.

Ben Sheets has pitched on some really bad teams. His career high in wins for a season is 12, but he's already at 11 so there's a very good chance he'll top that.

Single Season records added

I briefly mentioned in my last post that Google has begun indexing Brewer Leaders and I couldn't be happier for that. I checked my Google Analytics tool for the site and noticed that people have started trickling in from searches. One that really caught my attention was someone looking for the season leaders for Home Runs. This was something that I didn't originally think of since all I was ever interested in was all-time leaders, but obviously someone is interested in the seasons and who am I to say that it shouldn't have a place at Brewer Leaders.

I have all the data so it was very simple for me to add Season Leaderboards. I could have easily added all the categories that I track since I don't go through all the hassle of tracking individual movements, but I think I'm going to add a new Season Leaderboard when I add a new all-time Leaderboard (I probably will add one tonight since it's been a while) just so that the data is mirrored.

And because it's a quasi-tradition, here's some observations:

Hits: 200 hits has only been achieved 6 times for the Brewers, with only 3 players, and it hasn't happened since 1991 when Molitor was still with the team. Ryan Braun is leading the team in hits so far, and if he plays the remaining games he's only on pace to get 189 hits. Maybe one of these years, we'll have another 200 hitter.

Home Runs: No real surprise here for me, since last year Home Runs were talked about a lot during Prince Fielder's run to the record.

Runs Batted In: 126 is the most in a season!? Considering Josh Hamilton already has 95, it really shows how inconsistent RBIs are since you'll never know if you're going to hit in front of someone.

Strike Outs: Ben Sheets at the top during his amazing 2004 campaign. If he could have gotten better run support to notch a few more wins, he should have gotten the NL Cy Young, but the team sucked back then. It is surprising to me that his name isn't plastered near the top. His next best season was 170 good for 10th place. I suppose he was injured for a few seasons, and lately he has been pitching to contact more than trying to strike out everyone.

Congratulations Prince on 100 HR

Today Prince Fielder became only the 16th player in Brewer history to hit 100 career home runs for the franchise (the leaderboard won't update until tomorrow morning). The home run was a no-doubter in today's game against the Giants that landed in McCovey Cove in the seventh inning that put the Brewers ahead. It was instrumental in getting another win, and getting us closer to a playoff push.

It was also his 20th of the season and is quickly approaching Ryan Braun's totals for the year.

It also showed me that I was late on my goals for development for Brewer Leaders. I haven't previously announced it, but besides the Leaderboards, the other goal of the site is to generate a blog post documenting movements and career milestones. I wanted to have a beta of that feature by the time Prince hit his 100th career home run. Oh well, and since I'm heading to Chicago tomorrow for the week I'm not sure if I'll get to any development.

Some development news: I recently saw that Google has started to index the site and the links to the Player bios had me a little underwhelmed. So I've put the batter info on the page and will need to get to pitching for the pitchers. Note that the On Base Percentage is not 100% accurate because I'm not tracking some of the stats that are needed, but checking a number of players it's only off by a few thousands of a percent.

Updates Resume Tomorrow

The All-Star game break is over, the National League lost again (no surprise there), and with that regular updates to the Leaderboards will resume tomorrow after tonight's game against the Giants. There probably won't be any development updates in the next week as I'll be down in Chicago (I'm sorry) for a business trip.

RBI Leaderboard Added

I haven't had an opportunity to work on the website much the past few days, so I've decided to add the RBI Leaderboard. A number of current Brewers on the list, 8 if I'm counting properly. Prince Fielder is really climbing the ranks. The other thing I noticed is that Corey Hart is jumping fast too, he's only 5 RBI behind J.J. Hardy and I guess having 24 RBI in June really helps that out for Mr. Sunglasses at night.

It's also unbelievable that Craig Counsell's on the list, albeit right at the bottom of the list. He'll have his opportunity to climb since he's still playing for the team.

First Inconsistencies Found

A couple days ago I discovered some inconsistencies between data I have. It all started with how I have the 1970-2007 data, then the 2008 up to date data. The legacy data had Dave Bush listed as David Bush, and the 2008 data had him listed as Dave Bush. Since I base first name and last name as the main criteria for grouping season data, Dave Bush lost out on all 2008 data so he was stuck at 300 career strike outs even though he was at 353. I first noticed it when I looked up Dave Bush when he had the 13 strikeout performance to see where he was and I couldn't find him. I figured out what was going on, and have since corrected previous year's data to Dave Bush so we won't have the problem with him going forward. That doesn't mean we're out of the woods yet, so if you think some of the leaderboards are off let me know and I'll fix it. I'll continue to monitor the boards to see if people aren't moving properly.

Dev Summary for July 9, 2008

Another day, another session of coding, and we've got more progress at Brewer Leaders. I still need to get a lot of the back-end blog things done, but if I don't end a session with noticeable progress then I'm more likely to quit. But let's summarize!

Hits Leaderboard: Because of the way I'm handling the leaderboards, it takes more time up front to set it up. I'm doing this, because once the boards are set up, it'll require zero work from me. I'm getting better at setting it up, so we now have 3 boards. Of the stats that I'm tracking, I just need to set up 25 more boards.

Player Pages: The boards link to a player page and up until earlier this night, the links were broken. They're no longer broken, but all they say is the player's name. They will show all their lines from each year and their position on each board, even if they're not on the board.

Monthly Archives: The monthly archives pages now work. They will only show the first paragraph of each story, but it's a way to go back and see all the older posts.

That's where I called it quits for the night. I'm planning on adding one more board, category archives, and I want to get the edit posts working on the backend.
