Alive for the Playoffs Preview

With the Canucks leading us into what could be the most thrilling Spring in recent Vancouver's history, Canucks Outsider will be Alive for the Playoffs with a live video companion webcast on select playoff games. Join in the fun with live chat, trivia, memorabilia, hi-jinks, beer, interviews and anecdotes.

It's a Montage!

Here's some video montage action to getcha stoked!

The first Alive session is Friday, April 17 for Game 2 as the Canucks look to go 2-0 on the St. Louis Blues. Hop online at 6:45 while we scramble to transform the Hockey Lounge for your viewing pleasure.

Opening Lineups

Guests in this first session will include the wise Dan Funboy, England's The Fossil, Kyle from Switzerland, plus a Moose call to Winnipeg, and possibly the Quebecois Correspondent and who knows what mayhem might occur!

Next Friday (if necessary) we'll fire it up again and may have Black Ice writer Joe Tory (who also performs Canucks Outsider Season 4 intro song) who will be at the rink for Game 2.

Canucks Outsider on BC Almanac, CBC Radio 1 ~ Bonus episode

With the Canucks mired in a futility streak, BC Alamanac invited me down for a chat on the popular CBC Radio 1 afternoon radio show "B.C. Almanac" on Jan. 30, 2009. I've appeared on a the show before along with On the Coast, and really enjoy going to the Ceeb and sharing my punditry with my fellow Canadians.

During this segment, I fielded calls from Canucks fans around BC (Penticton, Nanaimo, Fort St. John ... ?) including 85 and 87 year old gentlemen who both brought good conversation and veteran savvy. Topics included coaching, Pat Quinn, Sami Salo, Ryan Johnson, Mats Sundin, chemistry, mediocrity, and psychology.

My amigo Bread the Producer recorded the segment and one of the production crew snapped a photo of Mark Forsythe and I chatting during an on-air break.

At the Canucks Fan Zone kiosk on the concourse at the game versus the Duck, Dave talks to a variety of fans, pundits, and passers-by including J.J. of the Canucks Hockey blog, Andy from Anaheim (don't worry, he's a Canucks fan), Roland the technologist, young Chris talking drafts, world juniors and college vs. junior career path, and finally the newest member of Canucks nation from England via Australia with a bag full of souvenirs celebrating the win en route to a pub.

Topics include Kings vs Ducks fans, draft history, Cody Hodgson, goalies, salary cap, Brian Burke, and the passion of Canadian fans and the economics of going to games. Cheers to Miss 604, Jamie and Bruce representing the Fanzone, Richard Loat and pals (Canucks Facebook app), and all the folks in the live blog especially Steve UK.

At the rink to see the Canucks face original six team Boston Bruins, host Dave O speaks about the retired #7 for the fans, awesome anthem singers, and the excitement of local boy Milan Lucic's heroics. Joined by a native Montrealer they discuss the multi-generational ferocity of the Habs and Bruins rivalry and bemoans the lackluster Canucks effort.

The 2nd intermission brings two West coast Bruins fans to talk about Chara as captain, Thomas vs. Fernandez goalie choice, differences between the Garden and the new rink, and tactics for following your team from far away. Finally, a drunken wrap-up while exiting the building and grabbing free posters.

In the wake of Reg Dunlop (AKA Paul Newman)'s demise, Dave answers the question "Who owns the Canucks?" - The answer is "All of us!"

Besides tracing his journey as a fan and introducing new listeners to the show's format (with help from clips of CBC's On the Coast show), Dave breaks down the new look Canucks roster - still in the midst of flux - and riffs about keys to this season including face-offs, early road-trip success, and a revived, puck-moving, physical defense corps.

Kicking off Season 4 of the original Canucks podcast, Dave Thorvald and Dan Funboy discuss the new - mostly-unknown - players, prospects, free agents and l'affaire Sundin, and Gillis' strategy, plus speak about Linden's sweater, Luc's demise, Rickard's brewpub and the Molson Brew 2.0 event.

Besides other brew chatter (including Beerfest, Rogue Dead Guy ale, Howe Sound pothole filler stout, Phillip's Slipstream Cream Ale ...), they discuss the Olympic venues under construction including sliding track, biathlon and x-country courses, and ski jumps, in the Whistler area as well as curling, speed skating oval and hockey rinks in Vancouver and freestyle/snowboard events at Cypress. Returning from an ill-fated Mexican vacation in time to see the meaningless season finale, Dave rambles on about a horrential bout of gut sickness and hanging at a beach bar while the Canucks imploded. Wheelchaired and sedated, he arrived home to find the Nucks missing the playoffs, sending off Trevor Linden without a final win and shifting the team in unknown directions with impending free agents, unclear strategy, and unproven prospects and finally, Dave (comfy back in North Van) considers how the now-officially-official ownership might move forward before summoning Canucks heores of the future to step forth.

Canucks Outsider kicks off 2008 a little delayed but in grand style with Dave and Dan covering wealth of topics in-studio over all-star weekend.
