Ivy Exec notes regarding their membership: 95% have a graduate degree, 86% hold an MBA, 47% are diverse and 41% are women. About 4,300 jobs are currently posted on the service and Elena told me that they have partnerships with some of the top schools in the U.S.

Like popular NY-based job board TheLadders, IvyExec charges users a fee which they note is a subscription charge. Elena noted that without paying you are blocked from applying to all jobs and can only apply to a select few. Full membership ranges from $22 to $42 a month.

Inc Magazine has a good overview of Ivy Exec including feedback about the service from a variety of venture capitalists. Some stats about Ivy Exec:

He went inside to take some photos and I waited outside. I noticed the sign (pictured below) on the door and had to do a double take. It’s not everyday you see a job posting noting requirments including: long hard hours, dead-end job, no benefits, etc. The really interesting thing about this sign was watching people walk by the rice pudding shop. In about five minutes time, I counted 20 people who stopped and talked about the sign with the others in their party – one young kid called his father over saying it might be a perfect job for him. A few people smiled, one laughed and another took a photo (like I did).

But the best part for the pudding shop was three people who were clearly walking past the shop actually stopped, read the sign, made a comment and then went into the shop. I don’t know if they bought anything but they were inside – how many others at least open the door based on this sign. In fact, the shop has other signs that are a bit shocking as well.

The reason I am sharing this with you is because it’s a great reminder to all startup entrepreneurs that the first step to making a sale is to get them in the door. The ability to be creative can help increase the number of people who “enter” and that’s one step closer to a sale, a lead or a user signup. Lastly, in today’s social media world, creativity can help your message spread.

(as a side note, I am guessing all of us have worked at least one job that fits those requirements perfectly!)

Here’s the general overview of the position (click the link to read the full job description):

“The Emerging Media Marketing Manager is the primary lead for the Best Buy’s mobile, social, and video marketing & media efforts to drive in-store and online sales, create sustainable word of mouth evangelists, and brand loyalists. This leader will create both bolt-on social and mobile marketing initiatives and other new initiatives and identify business opportunities that can be solved wholly or in part by applying or developing social technology, digital and software strategies and technologies .”

If you are interested in a position in Minnesota, this is actually a pretty damn hot job. To be honest if this is the kind of position you would consider, but don’t care much for Minnesota, I’d still recommend considering it. Most large companies only have one of these positions and Best Buy appears to be doing some things right when it comes to online marketing.  Best Buy wants a lot of experience which is required for a position of this level.

Here’s where the job goes south for me…it’s in the “preferred qualifications” section which has two bullet points and they are:

Preferred Qualifications:

• Graduate degree
• 250 plus followers on Twitter

I know what you are thinking - Allen must be joking. But sadly I am not. They seem to value education at the same level as a silly metric like number of followers on Twitter. I am sure glad I spent time getting my MBA :)

I wonder what internal employee, agency or analyst told them to add that as a requirement?!? My suggestion is if you plan to apply, beef up your followers before you send in your application. And if you think you fit the bill but have no followers, do a search on “add followers to my twitter account” and you can get 250 followers before you click off of this article.

Twitter followers are the new “hits” as a metric.

An interesting note is that their partnership with LinkedIn will allow local searchers to find connections at the companies they are interested in. This could provide job searchers with a leg up on the competition as the referral will come from an internal source if the internal connection is willing to pimp the applicant.
