It's that time of year again!

The farm stands are opening up around Fairfield County

Wilton's Farmers Market is opening on

Wednesday June 5th from 12:30-5:00pm

located at The Historical Society

While shopping at the farmers market come in and visit is Wilton's Historical Society. There is a historic museum on site, made up of two buildings that have been preserved by the society. Travel through time in these buildings that showcase 12 period rooms beginning in the early colonial style (1740) and ending in the Victorian Era around 1900.

Ambler Farm has a great organic market as well

Open starting in June (weather permitted) the farm sells its fabulous fresh, organic produce from 9:00am-2:00pm

What does it mean to be an "organic" farm??

When a farm sells products that are organic it means that the produce is grown without pestisides, anything genetically modified, and no synthetic fertilizers. If you are talking about organic eggs, any dairy or meat the animals are not fed any growth hormones and no not take any antibiotics.

This great little farm was bought in 1794 by the Raymond family. The farm totaled almost 300 acres. One of Raymond's daughters married a man from the Ambler family. The farm has stayed in the Raymond/Ambler families for years. The farm remained in the family until, with enormous taxpayer support, the town of Wilton purchased the property with all its buildings. This 200-year old farm is enjoyed by Wilton residents. Children often visit the farm on field trips and it is a fun place to bring the family, whether you are buying a Christmas tree, purchasing fresh organic produce or attending a fundraiser. It all happens here at Ambler Farm.

The school system is one of the best in the State of Connecticut which has one of the best in the nation. There are two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school which features accelerated classes for gifted students, music and visual arts courses and a large resource center. The town has 4,151 students and classes range from around 20 for the elementary schools to 25 in High School. 91% of Wilton High School students have gone to colleges and universities and the mean SAT scores are 584 verbal and 598 math. The High School has an innovative language program which encourages foreign language studies, including French, German, Spanish, Russian and Latin and Wilton is one of the only towns in the country that still offers Classical Greek. Now that is unusual.

Wilton prides itself on its sports programs. Their teams have won several state titles and is the home of Kristine Lilly of the USA Olympic Soccer Team. There are two golf courses, tennis courts, running track and many many playing fields. The open spaces have hiking trails and nature preserves.

New Canaan is a very nice town in Fairfield County. It is popular for many reasons, great schools, great location, and it is the quintessential New England town, except in New Canaan there is much more than the country store. New Canaan is unique from some of its neighboring towns because in New Canaan you can stroll down the streets, window shop and grab a coffe while on the go. Not all Fairfield County towns are as walkable in town.

This month I thought we could explore some more unique architecture in Fairfield County. The Glass House was built in 1949 by Philip Johnson. Also know as the Johnson House, the Glass House was Philip Johnson's weekend get away for 58 years. He and his partner David Whitney were enthusiastic art collecters and you can see their collection at the Glass House today. The Glass House is now a museum, where you can visit and take a tour of the 47 acre property with its 14 architectual structures. It is also available to rent out. What a unique venue for any party, whether it be a private function or a corporate event.

Wilton is a great town in which to live, located in Fairfield County, CT.

Wilton has one of the best school systems in the state and every year is at the top of "best of" lists in both Connecticut Magazine and US News and World Reports. There are many things to see and do here in Wilton.

Today I thought we could explore the Cannondale section of Wilton. This area is a quaint and charming section of town where you get the feeling that you have transported back in time.

Cannondale Railroad Station, Cannon Crossing and many antique farm style homes make up this part of Wilton. The land was first settled on in the 17^th century. Originally call “Pimpewaug” by the Indians the name was later changed to Cannon after a prominent family in the area. The Cannon family owned the general store and later played a key role in the opening of a post office at the Cannon train station. In November of 1915 the final name of Cannondale was given to this historic part of Wilton.

Although the area looks old-fashioned, today there are stylish stores such as Bella & Co. and a very trendy restaurant. The Schoolhouse at Cannondale is a wonderful and modern restaurant, the owner and chef is a Wilton native.

Just thought everyone should get a taste of Nikki's optimism here about the Trulia acquisition of Market Leader, which in turn is the acquisition of AR. This is a fabulous post! Read on ....

There is a lot of talk on ActiveRain right now regarding the Trulia acquisition of Market Leader, which is the parent company of ActiveRain. There are also a number of members of crying foul, believing the entire rationale for the Market Leader acquisition was to steal ActiveRain's content and Google Juice so that Trulia can more effectively compete with Zillow.

ActiveRain - I love you. I would like to ground the discussion for a minute.

ActiveRain is ALL about the COMMUNITY

Having stewarded ActiveRain and watched Google for the past 2+ years, the valuable asset of ActiveRain is NOT the content. The ActiveRain community that proactively pays it forward and helps consumers and other real estate professionals is incredibly special in the real estate industry and, I argue, the entire Internet. There have been many amazing instances of the power of ActiveRain this year. ActiveRain convinced NAR to dismiss a Fair Housing lawsuit against Tampa's Jeff Launiere. Most impressive is ActiveRain's saving Gail Robinson's Connecticut house from foreclosure. Read the blog post. It should make you proud to a member of ActiveRain, give you faith in humanity, and convince you of the importance of ActiveRain to real estate.

Respect the Community

The power of the ActiveRain's community comes from an engaged, active and caring GROUP of professionals. Most of the fear arising out of yesterday's announcement is largely related to the potential of what COULD happen to ActiveRain. In order for ActiveRain to be successful, regardless if you are the founders of ActiveRain, Nikesh Parekh, Market Leader, or Trulia, we must foster and grow the COMMUNITY. If content is stolen and re-purposed, if links are stolen or broken, or worse, ActiveRain could quickly spiral downwards and lose value to the community, to Market Leader, to Trulia.

Think MySpace.

No one wants that to happen to ActiveRain.

In Change There Is Opportunity

As I read through the comments on my blog, overriding themes are that "change is scary" and ""change can be bad." You are right. Yes, change CAN be scary. Change CAN be bad. For those of you who have followed my career with ActiveRain, I have not had the smoothest of rides, by any stretch of the imagination. Flip through my blog posts starting in April 2011 and you will see a laughable series of greatest hits and greatest mistakes. Through lots of change, some I brought on myself and other changes imposed on me (Google Panda, technology crashes, management changes), we kept moving in the right direction. We want progress to be linear and immediate, but it rarely is. Persistence is really important.

Most important to me though were the people on the journey. Shout out to Bob Stewart, Kerrie Greenhalgh, Kelly Pflugrath, Kate Yackley, Anthony Van Vactor, Kelly Clifford, Kristi Knutson, Mark Frederick, Lauren Bernstein, Patrick Lesher, Chris Beahm, Chris Paredes, and those ActiveRain members that stuck by me when things were particularly challenging in 2011. Without this team and you, I am not sure where ActiveRain would be today.

But I think that is always true. The people & the team make the opportunity. I say it every day. I would rather work at an unsexy company making widgets with people I enjoy and respect, than work with people I dread seeing every day.

Been there. Done that. Never again.

The Benefits of Optimism Are Real

I read this article called "The Benefits of Optimism" in The Atlantic recently. The article goes on to say:

"Far from being delusional or faith-based, having a positive outlook in difficult circumstances is not only an important predictor of resilience -- how quickly people recover from adversity -- but it is the most important predictor of it. People who are resilient tend to be more positive and optimistic compared to less-resilient folks; they are better able to regulate their emotions; and they are able to maintain their optimism through the most trying circumstances."

And the article goes on to say:

"When your mind starts soaring, you notice more and more positive things. This unleashes an upward spiral of positive emotions that opens people up to new ways of thinking and seeing the world -- to new ways forward. This is yet another reason why positive people are resilient. They see opportunities that negative people don't. Negativity, for adaptive reasons, puts you in defense mode, narrows your field of vision, and shuts you off to new possibilities since they're seen as risks."

I live my life by optimism, humor, and personal altruism. Though I rarely reference Jon Washburn (Obama rarely references Bush either), he taught me the importance of being positive, havng a clear mind, and living a life of positive energy, regardless of what life throws your way.

So, yes, many things can go wrong in life and with ActiveRain. But have faith in the power of the community, the power of ActiveRain and the team here (like Bob, Kerrie, Kris, Eric, Michelle, Kelly, Kelly, Chris and many more) to take ActiveRain to the next level.

"Spring –A Time for Change” - Time To Improve!

Spring is a great time to do cleaning - cleaning of the house, our businesses, our bodies, and our souls.

It is spring cleaning time! I have decided this spring to reorganize, and teach my agents some of those skills as I learn them, so we can all be better agents and better people. I always feel much better when I have cleaned the curtains, swept out from under furniture, put away the piles from the counters, but it is not always possible to find the time to do it daily.

This year I will make a concerted effort to be more organized - my daughter says "touch it only once" - not sure that applies always in a large house, but trying will be a better start. To be more organized also includes leaving earlier for appointments so I am earlier than my clients. I am not late, but always miffed at myself when my clients arrive before me. (It's tough sometimes, because I have some clients who arrive 15 minutes early every time.)

For the business side of me, I would like to begin to do more networking again. I used to belong to a BNI, but dropped out because of a family health issue. I would like to work the same principle, but with my own hours and with folks that I can choose. It may not be as efficient, but that will be the best I can do. It may be more personal and perhaps better in the long run.

The most expensive home for sale in Ridgefield, CT is for $11,950,000, it is the home of fashion, textile and furniture designer, Alexander Julian and his wife.

The second most expensive home in Ridgefield, CT has not been on the market in over 60 years! Spruce Ridge (Horse) Farm is selling for $6,250,000 it is on over 50 acres and is an equestrians dream!

My Buyer Had to Have a Garage - Find out Why!

Today I found out a new reason for a garage when buying a new home.

Most buyers will want to park their cars. They will want to keep their cars clean from the rain and pollen and even dry from the snowstorms. That's normal.

Perhaps a tool bench will fill the rear of the garage. This way, the tools can be available for great building projects and it will be easy to clean up the mess. Every new home buyer wants to try their hand in repair and remodeling! That's normal.

Sometimes the new home buyer will want to have some work out equipment in the garage in front of where you park your car. They will have room for a bike and treadmill and perhaps even some weights. That's normal.

This particular buyer wanted to place netting up and practice his golf! I have never heard of this idea, but of course it would make all of the sense in the world for an avid golfer! This way, all winter he could move his car out, put up the netting, and just swing away. He even spoke of having friends over to also practice their golf swings. This is unusual for a new home buyer, but a cool idea.

Now, I ask you, why don't we women ever think of these necessities when we are out buying a new home?

Spotted a Bobcat Today Chasing a Deer in Wilton

I sat in my kitchen in Wilton, CT this afternoon, and something caught my eye outside. I saw the huge fluffy white of a tail of a deer bounding along in a hurry across my view in Bradley Park behind our house. Then, I saw something else stir right behind our wall by our backyard. It looked like a very large gray cat sitting there - but it was so extremely quick when it decided to follow the deer! It was a bobcat!

I looked it up online, and found an article about a family in Darien seeing one in their backyard also. There are bobcats wandering in our woodsy areas here in Fairfield County.

Please take care not to leave your children or small animals unsupervised outside...

Many new restaurants have popped up in Wilton. Cafe Bon Appetit has fabulous French food. Luca, a Wilton favorite, and Bianco Rosa are both wonderful Italian restaurants. Cactus Rose serves Mexican at its best, and there is the top rated Schoolhouse at Cannondale.

Our newest addition is the Little Pub 2, they opened last Thursday April 18th. They are located on Route 7 just past Outdoor Sports in Wilton. Little Pub 2 is a larger version of the very popular Little Pub in Ridgefield.
