I have two other reasons for playing Randolph’s Leap on the podcast. Last night I went to the Edinburgh launch gig for their new cassette. A pretty low key acoustic affair with Adam from the band playing an acoustic guitar in Matthew from Song, by Toad’s flat. It was, however, a wonderful gig. With top quality support from David from Kid Canaveral, also doing an acoustic take on both old and new Kid Canaveral tunes.

The second reason is that the Glasgow launch for the cassette is on Saturday night at the Captain’s Rest. So this is a plug, if Saturday hasn’t passed yet, get yourself along where they’ll have the full eight piece band. In the tiny Captain’s Rest! Should be fun.

In a shocking turn of events, I’ve even been to a couple of gigs since the last show! Both free in-stores at Avalanche Records, but gigs nonetheless. Rachel Sermanni on Monday and The Twilight Sad yesterday. Edinburgh Man Jr managed to get along to both too, although the Twilight Sad one was a bit too busy for him to get inside. I also suspect those Twilight Sad chaps are responsible for the low amount of Twitter banter during the show; they were playing at the Grand Ole Opry in Glasgow tonight. I’ll let them off though, since their new album is rather splendid.

Anyway, tonight’s show is a tad eclectic, albeit with a fair amount of jangly indie-pop. If you’re looking for the sort of synth-pop and electronica from last week, you’re going to be disappointed.

I’m writing this blog entry before recording the show. Hopefully Edinburgh Man Junior (who now has a name) will have kept quiet for the duration – I do have the baby monitor right next to me – and we’ll have had some uninterrupted music and chat.

On today’s show, I needed to wake myself up to get going, so some Australian chiptune happy-hardcore was required. Obviously. There’s a couple of new tracks from Edinburgh bands – podcast favourites My Tiny Robots, and 80′s synth influenced The Machine Room. Bands who also happen to share a drummer. It’s also that time of year when new releases often seem to dry up, so I have been listening to some older stuff for the last seven days… hence a few oldies on the show today. But thankfully Edinburgh based record labels Song by Toad and Gerry Loves Records keep the new releases coming. First up is a track from the new split cassette on Gerry Loves Records. It’s a track from Field Mouse, who I have to admit I hadn’t heard before seeing him at the Gerry Loves Xmas gig on Friday night. His set was great and the cassette release, along with the Japanese War Effort, is a thing of beauty. Also on the show is a track from the Lil Daggers self titled album. It’s the last release of 2011 from Song by Toad, and it’s a belter too.

A slight change on today’s show. There are more tracks than normal. Until the end of the year I’m going to try for 8 track shows. I’m going to give Mixcloud another go, and for music shows they have (for some mysterious reason) a minimum of 8 tracks. This is despite the fact the podcast never got anything more than 1% listens from Mixcloud… but maybe I didn’t tried hard enough.

Enough of that, let’s talk music. We start off with a track from Austria’s Ana Threat, which blew me away when I listened to it a few days ago, not least because of a large madness factor. You’ll see what I mean when you listen to it. There’s also a brilliant track from Trips and Falls on Edinburgh’s Song, by Toad Records. It actually came out in September, but for some reason I thought I’d already played the track on the show, so when I realised I hadn’t I just had to play it. However, there is some great music on today’s show. So that’s okay then. We start with a track from the brilliant album by Glasgow’s The Moth & The Mirror, two tracks from bands from Asheville, NC (I know!), and a great track from an album by Uniform Motion that you can buy as a name your price ON VINYL! Crazy.

During the podcast I make a strange reference to animal noises (specifically those of a hamster and maybe an owl) and I threaten to explain the reference, but I never do. On twitter today I had a conversation with @eagleowlattack and @jonniecommon about playing the last track on the show. @eagleowlattack suggested monetary compensation that I eventually got down to a beer. @jonniecommon suggested I interrupt the middle of the track with the noise of a squawking eagle owl.

Finally @zaphodjrham (who appears to be a twittering hamster – you heard that right) suggested augmenting the experience with a hamster noise. I’m not entirely sure what such a noise would be, but in the end I forgot all about it on the show. My brain and my mouth do have a tendency to disengage from each other sometimes.

It’s the last weekend of the Edinburgh Fringe 2011. Thankfully. I’m not sure how much longer I could have kept going. This week I’ve been to shows on all but one of the days. Gordon is back, and impressively he has been to some shows too! Outrageous.

It’s basically a round up of what we’ve seen, we ramble about our favourite bits of the festival, play some music, and talk about things that you could go and see in the last few days. There’s also a fun chat with comedian Kurt Braunohler, who is performing at the brilliant variety show Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen with his comedy partner Kristen Schaal. You only have a few hours left to go and see it, because it’s their last show tonight. But it’d be worth it.

Finally this week’s Hipstamatic was from Withered Hand’s glorious “homecoming” gig at the Queen’s Hall on Thursday night. Hearing a massive crowd of people singing along to Religious Songs and No Cigarettes was incredible.

Another podcast from the Edinburgh Fringe! We’re more than halfway through, but the fringe is really taking it’s toll. So much so that we’re one presenter down! Gordon has done a runner. The podcast and his Fringe schedule collided today, so you’ve just got me instead.

Actually, that’s not true. You’ve got me, and Shambles Miller, and Josie Long! Two interviews on the podcast today. I chat to Josie Long about her brilliantly funny and politically charged show “The Future Is Another Place” which is on at the Pleasance Dome until Sunday the 28th (not the 22nd). It’s not all politics, we also talk swimming, and nerd out a little bit while chatting about Scottish indie music.

Shambles Miller came over to Edinburgh last week to play a secret gig in the Blind Poet bar. We had a great chat afterwards, but beforehand, in torrential rain, Shambles played an acoustic track while sheltering in an alleyway off the Grassmarket. It’s the first ever exclusive recording for the show! And it’s re-assuringly lo-fi, with sounds of wind, rain and traffic in the background! You can see Shambles playing live during the Fringe in a real venue too. He’s supporting Jack Savoretti at Cabaret Voltaire as part of the Edge Festival.

One week into the fringe and the festival is starting to hit its stride. Gordon, of course, still hasn’t been to any shows. But no matter, I went to five in one day yesterday, and I’m feeling the strain a bit today. We’ve moved outside, lured by the promise of some sun that didn’t really materialise. The Edinburgh wind however did… as demonstrated by the buffeting on the microphone. Apologies for that. Hopefully you can still hear our ramblings. Anyway, there are reviews today, especially for some of the free fringe shows. And also a few tips for getting into the rather busy free fringe shows. Don’t say we don’t provide a public service.

Finally, with massive thanks to Avalanche Records, we talk to David from Kid Canaveral. They’ve had a hectic year so far including playing SXSW along with King Creosote, and signing to Fence Records to re-release their brilliant debut album SHOUTING at Wildlife. But more importantly, in terms of the Fringe at least, they are playing at The Liquid Rooms tomorrow night along with Over The Wall and Admiral Fallow. Get your tickets here!

It also feels like this first weekend of the Fringe has been the wettest start for some time. We had hoped, just liked last year, to record the podcast sitting on a picnic table in the Pleasance, supping on some beer, and enjoying the sun. Instead, we were sheltering from the rain in the bar of the echoey Pleasance Dome. We also haven’t even been to see any shows yet! So this is very much a preview edition. I’m a tad worn out this week too. Which is no way to start the festival. Last weekend we went for a city break down in London. I’m not sure why I thought this would be relaxing. It never is. By some way of explanation, last week I did the foolish thing of having a clock in front of me while recording the podcast. This was because I had an appointment to keep after the show, but in the end it put me on edge and exacerbated my already fragile condition. The result was what @ArtIdiot on twitter described as “golden gonzo chat“… Well, I’m not sure about the goldeness of it, but at least one person enjoyed the ramblings.

Founded in 1991 in Olympia Washington by Slim Moon, it’s surely not an overstatement to say that KRS is one of the most influential labels in the alternative music scene. It’s been a busy old week or so gig-wise recently, even if I did miss Mercury Rev this evening because I didn’t get my tickets in time. On Tuesday I embarked on the always fun trip through to Glasgow on the train, this time to see Low at the Classic Grand. The gig was brilliant, although Scotrail took their time getting there. In the end I arrived during the last song of the support act, and only about 10 minutes before Low came on stage. The gig was brilliant though. And I couldn’t not play a Low track on the show. There’s also some great shoegazey noise from Procession, a track from Edinburgh’s Birdhead and lots of other stuff too.

Founded by Candice Pedersen and Calvin Johnson (most well-known for his band Beat Happening). As seems to happen when you’re off work for a while, after a few days your body eventually realises that it’s time to relax and all manner of viruses and lurgies take over. So on last Saturday, after doing very little for just over a week, I came down with the cold. I’ve been pretty croaky for a few days, so had to record this week’s show at the last minute so I’d actually be able to speak!

Anyway. This weekend I braved illness and went along to the (free) Grassmarket festival in the centre of Edinburgh. There were loads of great local bands, including the subject of this week’s Hipstamatic – Edinburgh School for the Deaf. Despite having a drunk Mark E. Smith lookalike dancing in front of them for much of their set (he’s the one on the right, by the way), they played a blinder. Nice and loud… so much so that a woman from the council appeared and made them turn off the PA with one more track still to play. Outragous.

Anyway, rather than go into work for a three day week this week, I decided to take an extra few days off. The result is that this is a chilled out, recorded during a sunny evening, relaxed podcast! There’s fairly eclectic mix of music too… some post-punk, twee-indie-folk, and shoegaze… and that’s just for starters.

This week’s Hipstamatic… it seems like there’s been in-store gigs at Avalanche Records in Edinburgh every week for ages. On Saturday there, we were treated to pretty much a full set by Aberfeldy. If it wasn’t for the torrential rain on the bike ride back home afterwards it would have been a perfect Saturday!

Back when I started doing the podcast I always recorded it on the Thursday night. But back then I wasn’t so fussed with doing a proper blog post, and getting the sound levels all right. So, for the last while I’ve been recording the show on a Wednesday or even a Tuesday night. But, for what ever reason I’ve been a bit slack this week and it’s all come down to the wire… anyway… let’s go!

On today’s show there’s a track by Edinburgh band Sebastian Dangerfield. It’s from their new EP which has a launch party at Edinburgh College of Art on the 22nd of this month. There’s also a great fun track from the Thao and Mirah album that comes out towards the end of the month on Kill Rock Stars, and a brilliant track from Conquering Animal Sound‘s Kammerspiel album. Lots more music besides, and a bit of the old chat.

Yep. A couple of days ago I hadn’t even made a playlist for the show, and when I sat down to put the music together I must of been in a pretty chilled out mood, because it’s all a bit lower tempo than normal. This is partly helped by the fact that as I was looking for the music, Edinburgh based Song, by Toad Records uploaded a brilliant sampler album to Bandcamp. Many thanks for that Matthew!

I got a bit inspired after a great gig by Kid Canaveral at the weekend as part of their SXSW fundraising kick, so I desperately wanted to play one of my favourite tracks of theirs on the show. It’s also a track that isn’t from their album, so there’s an off chance that it’s new to a few people. Kid Canaveral are going to be in New York this month en route to Austin, so if you are in or around NYC then I recommend you try and catch them live.
