1) I’ve been doing a daily podcast at junior.edinburghman.com for #30daysofbiking. Initially I thought it would be an interesting daily podcast where I cycle to glamorous locations around in Edinburgh. In fact it’s normally me speaking into my phone somewhere along my commute.

2) Edinburgh Man Junior (the real one) has been waking up early all week. Teeth related I suspect, but that doesn’t make it any better. Anyway, this is the reason why today’s podcast is another early doors one. 7pm. I wonder if anyone listened…

3) My record player is still broken. It needs a new motor. This has got me down a wee bit. On the plus side I now own a Fisher Price wind-up record player from the 1970s. This is good.

Normally I do the podcast live. 8pm every Thursday (put it in your diaries). This week, however, I did something a bit different. Basically getting the live podcast ready requires a bit of faffing about.. preparing this and that, getting the technology working… that sort of thing. Today, and in fact all this week, has been pretty busy so I wasn’t able to get everything ready for tonight, so instead I thought I’d pre-record the show at some point during the evening “at my leisure”. In the end I realised that if I plugged in a single wire I could make still make the show live, so with about 3 minutes notice on twitter I did a “secret” “live” podcast. I’m not sure if it was any more relaxing than normal, certainly the requisite amount of inane chat is still present.

You know, I think I’ve missed the three year anniversary of the podcast. It was sometime towards the end of February if my memory is correct… which it rarely is. Anyway, last year I think we figured out it the podcast came into being on the same day that Stu Lewis started The Tidal Wave of Indifference blog. As if that wasn’t enough of a weird coincidence, Stu and I went through to Glasgow last week to see the wonderful My Bloody Valentine at the Barrowlands.

It was a brilliant gig. And loud. I mean, LOUD. My earplugs were stuck so far into my ears I could feel them at the back of my throat! Anyway, a top night all round. Although I did end up losing my keys and having to get the locks replaced in the house. So a top, expensive night all round.

So another pre-recorded podcast this week. Basically my Thursday night was gearing up to be a night of craziness, so I recorded this early on. In the end it was fortuitous that I did because Edinburgh Man Junior (who normally doesn’t make a sound all night) kicked off big style at the normal podcasting hour of 9pm. Eventually he settled down about 40 odd minutes later, but I suspect if the podcast had been live it would have been rather swiftly curtailed.

Anyway, in keeping with the last series of daily podcasts back in December and early January I thought I’d make this one all artists that were new to me and the show. It least, that was the plan until I listened to the wonderful new Conquering Animal Sound single. I mean, how could I not play it? It sends shivers up my spine. WITH DAVID MACGREGOR FROM KID CANAVERAL

The nights are fair drawing in. On this cold, damp December evening the podcast is brightened up with a visit by David MacGregor from Edinburgh’s Kid Canaveral. Not only has he brought his sparkling wit, but also two tracks from their upcoming album, “Now That You Are A Dancer”, which comes out in March on Fence Records. The Canaveral’s new single “Low Winter Sun” is perfectly suited to this December night, and we feature the first ever play anywhere of the track “Who’s Looking at You, Anyway”. Hooray!

Also on the podcast, as if that wasn’t enough, there are tracks from many of the bands playing at the sold out Baubles III, Kid Canaveral’s annual Christmas Party, which is taking place on the 22nd of December.

“Wow”, I hear you say. If only it was winter all year round.

Anyway, today is a day off. Or at least, a day off work. It’s not really a day off. I had a spare hour today and thought it might be fun to sneak in a daytime podcast. I’ve also got the gasman coming to fix the boiler (I’m writing this before the show… Will he come during it? That would be exciting), a parent’s meeting at Edinburgh Man Junior’s nursery, and “babysitting”. Does it could as babysitting when it’s your own child, not really.

The technical issues that have been plaguing the Interweb connection at Edinburgh Man Towers finally came to a head during today’s live podcast. Actually, that’s maybe being a tad melodromatic. Massive apologies to those who listened live – the dodgy router that came from my ISP decided to reset about halfway through the show. It always comes back, but there must have been 5 minutes of downtime in there somewhere. Those of you “lucky” enough to listen afterwards won’t have this issue, due to the power of the pause button.

On the podcast a brilliant track from the new Dressed Like Wolves album. Top indie pop from Dude York and Post Modern Team, some epic shoegaze from those Plastic Animals, and a brilliant indie-rock track from Schwervon! In fact, Schwervon! are playing tomorrow night in Halifax (West Yorkshire, not Nova Scotia), Glasgow on Saturday, and Aberdeen on Sunday. You should really get along and see them. Go on.

Recently I’ve been trying to mix up the musical styles a little bit. In particular some more noisy stuff to keep you all on your toes. I was concerned that this would result in less people listening, but in fact the number of people downloading the show has increased! Damn! Just for that I start off the show with Toronto based punk band The Soupcans and a track from their debut LP out soon on Telephone Explosion! (That’s their exclamation mark, by the way). There’s also a track from my current favourite musical style – european surf punk courtesy of The Dark Colours Since 1685. It’s not all noisy rock though – indie-pop from The Spook School, pop-punk from Destroy Nate Allen and post-folk from entertainment for the braindead all feature in tonight’s magical musical mix.

Anyway, I’m getting quite into the Paralympics this week, and as a result the podcast was recorded two hours early so I could watch the 100m T44 final at 9.15pm with Oscar Pistorius, Jerome Singleton and Jonnie Peacock. Of course, that’ll all be over by the time you read this… perhaps I should just stop babbling.

Anyway, I put out a request on the old twitter earlier on today for music related recommendations for books to load up the Kindle with before the trip, and I got loads of suggestions back. Of course, the irony is that I’ll probably spend all of the flight trying to amuse a small child, rather than reading any of the great sounding books, but at least my bag will only be bulging with nappies (diapers for those on the other side of the pond).

As usual, I digress. Lots of great music on today’s show. As with last week, a few more tracks than normal. So, it was almost a podcast with no music. Or rather, a podcast with no new music. I obviously didn’t source any tracks while ill. Shockingly it all seems to be coming together. Since last weeks podcast Edinburgh Man Jr has slept through the night three times! On top of that, I’ve been to two gigs over the same period… In fact, one of those gigs was the Fence Records “Eye ‘O the Dug” festival in St. Andrews so really that’s like loads of gigs.

To celebrate this you get some rambling reviews of both Eye ‘O the Dug, which took places insides some incredibly old (and incredibly cold) buildings at St. Andrews University, and (The) Lemonheads, who I saw last night at the Edinburgh Picture House.

There are a couple of tracks from bands that played in St. Andrews, some music related to this Saturday’s Record Store Day events in Edinburgh, and more great music besides.

I’ve been cataloguing my vinyl for the last week. I downloaded a cool iPhone app called MyStuff2 (I’m not sure if the 2 is important or not… I wonder what the first one was like…). The reason for this organisation is because I’ve been known to accidently buy albums that I already have. In theory it should be easy, but this sort of thing never really is. About a third of the albums seem to pre-date barcodes, and the ones that do have them always come back with weird capitalisation, or “[VINYL]” appended to the end of the names. Most of the time is spent editing the information that the barcode scanning is supposed to make automatic. Add to that the odd record label (Song, by Toad, I’m looking at you) whose barcodes refuse to scan. Damn this technology.

Anyway, I’ve just finished it! And in the process discovered I’ve lost my original pressing of “Paul’s Boutique” by The Beastie Boys (£20 on eBay) but gained an extra copy of “Definitely Maybe” by Oasis (up to £65 on eBay). So at least we’re in the black.

Unfortunately… I’ve still got the 7-inch singles to tackle…

Schwervon!, The Spook School and Cancel the Astronauts all have upcoming gigs this weekend. Schwervon! are playing tonight at the Big Snow Buffalo Lodge in Brooklyn. It’s their send off show before they move from NYC to Kansas! The Spook School are playing tomorrow night at Teviot in Edinburgh as part of the Fresh Air Festival 2012. They’re on really late… so I probably won’t make that. Finally Cancel The Astronauts are playing at Sneaky Pete’s, also in Edinburgh, on Saturday night along with Bad Books and Fuzzystar. I am planning on making it to that one. Honest.
