And we’re back! Apologies for the music repeat show last week. A 24 hour virus invaded the house and podcast duties had to be set aside for parental duties for at least a day. The slightly annoying thing was that after I had that massive cold and sore throat a couple of weeks back, I decided to record an “emergency show”. This is something I did last year with a couple of shows with tracks from K Records and Kill Rock Stars. Those shows were kicking about for ages before I pulled them into service, but this time I’ve used my backup show straight away!

Anyway, there’s a bunch of new music on today’s show. Well, newish, because it’s by and large the playlist from last week’s show. As a result, if you keep up to date with other Scottish blogs or podcasts, you’ve probably already heard most of these before. I don’t care. I like them, so I’m playing them.

It’s the emergency broadcast system… Something has gone wrong today. Illness or Internet probably. No matter. I had this spare podcast up my sleeve! Edinburgh Man #93

Imagine being ill on Record Store Day. Outrageous. This can’t happen again. I spent most of the weekend and the start of the week in bed, rather pathetically with just a cold. In my defence, it was a horrible cold. But a cold nonetheless. It did make Record Store Day pretty hard going. I had hoped to do the rounds of the record shops in Edinburgh, taking in in-stores at both Avalanche and Vox Box… In the end I only managed to stumble up to Avalanche, get most of the records I wanted to buy, watch Withered Hand and some of Gordon from Ballboy, and then stumble back home to bed. Next year I need to isolate myself from the world in the run up to Record Store Day… I don’t want to go through all that again.

So, it was almost a podcast with no music. Or rather, a podcast with no new music. I obviously didn’t source any tracks while ill. But in the end, as is the way of these things, lots of top new tunes appeared, and you were saved the fate of listening to me playing music that had been on the show before.

Edinburgh Man #92

I wrote the rest of this blog post the morning before the show. It’s almost as if I jinxed it with the opening sentence…

Shockingly it all seems to be coming together. Since last weeks podcast Edinburgh Man Jr has slept through the night three times! On top of that, I’ve been to two gigs over the same period… In fact, one of those gigs was the Fence Records “Eye ‘O the Dug” festival in St. Andrews so really that’s like loads of gigs.

To celebrate this you get some rambling reviews of both Eye ‘O the Dug, which took places insides some incredibly old (and incredibly cold) buildings at St. Andrews University, and (The) Lemonheads, who I saw last night at the Edinburgh Picture House.

There are a couple of tracks from bands that played in St. Andrews, some music related to this Saturday’s Record Store Day events in Edinburgh, and more great music besides.

Edinburgh Man #91

Pick. Scan. Edit. Return. Pick. Scan. Edit. Return…

I’ve been cataloguing my vinyl for the last week. I downloaded a cool iPhone app called MyStuff2 (I’m not sure if the 2 is important or not… I wonder what the first one was like…). The reason for this organisation is because I’ve been known to accidently buy albums that I already have. In theory it should be easy, but this sort of thing never really is. About a third of the albums seem to pre-date barcodes, and the ones that do have them always come back with weird capitalisation, or “[VINYL]” appended to the end of the names. Most of the time is spent editing the information that the barcode scanning is supposed to make automatic. Add to that the odd record label (Song, by Toad, I’m looking at you) whose barcodes refuse to scan. Damn this technology.

Anyway, I’ve just finished it! And in the process discovered I’ve lost my original pressing of “Paul’s Boutique” by The Beastie Boys (£20 on eBay) but gained an extra copy of “Definitely Maybe” by Oasis (up to £65 on eBay). So at least we’re in the black.

Unfortunately… I’ve still got the 7-inch singles to tackle…

Edinburgh Man #90

Over and over again. I may have said during last week’s show that I already had sorted out the playlist for tonight’s show. Normally I choose the playlist a day or two before the podcast and listen to it a couple of times on my iPhone to see if the tracks go well together (see – there is some method to the madness). This time, however, as a result of selecting the tracks ages ago, I’ve listened to it over and over again. The Veronica Falls track especially. I’m addicted to it. I mean, it’s great… but I think there may be something wrong with me…

Anyway, the upshot is that I ended up deciding I didn’t really like about half the tracks on the show, and set about seeking out some more and changing it all about a bit. There is perhaps a lesson there with regards to overthinking this funny little show…

Edinburgh Man #89

Getting ready for this week’s podcast was a bit of a trial. I had to tidy away the Sega Saturn from the desk and get the microphone set up instead… Regular listeners to the show may be aware of my retro gaming vice. For some reason I always wanted to own a Saturn, despite the fact at the time I had the technically superior and much more game-laden PlayStation. Anyway, after many years of waiting I splashed out £30 this week for a Saturn and a whole bunch of games. I’ve been playing “Mass Destruction” continually since then. If your current “jam” could be a game, mine would be that.

Anyway, after last week’s podcast of mostly artists who are favourites of the show, tonight’s podcast entirely contains artists who have never featured before. In fact, with the exception of one of the artists who I knew by name if not by music, all of them are new to me in the last 7 days.

Edinburgh Man #88

So. I got up early this morning… well, actually it was an enforced rise of sorts. I sorted out the playlist for tonight’s show and wrote this blog post. Unfortunately, on the show itself, I sort of went off the rails fairly early on and didn’t feel that I couldn’t mention it. About halfway through I decided to pour myself a large drink, and we just about managed to get through to the end, but at what cost?

Anyway, music-wise there’s podcast favourites Schwervon! and The Spook School, a great new track from the Retribution Gospel Choir (if you aren’t familiar with them, it’s not what you think), and a track from the new Cancel the Astronauts single.

Schwervon!, The Spook School and Cancel the Astronauts all have upcoming gigs this weekend. Schwervon! are playing tonight at the Big Snow Buffalo Lodge in Brooklyn. It’s their send off show before they move from NYC to Kansas! The Spook School are playing tomorrow night at Teviot in Edinburgh as part of the Fresh Air Festival 2012. They’re on really late… so I probably won’t make that. Finally Cancel The Astronauts are playing at Sneaky Pete’s, also in Edinburgh, on Saturday night along with Bad Books and Fuzzystar. I am planning on making it to that one. Honest.

Edinburgh Man #86

Oops. It seems that I have hidden my “Soundcloud” label on my Gmail since the start of the year. This wouldn’t be particularly problematic if it wasn’t for the fact that people regularly send me loads of tracks though it. Whoops. So today’s show features some of those tracks, including a great track from a cassette release on Livingston’s Soft Power Recordings, Edinburgh’s Urvanovic and Glasgow’s Will Hanson.

There’s also a recent track from one of my favourite bands from the 1990s – Luscious Jackson who have reformed and are self-recording a new album funded through Pledge Music, and my current jam – a fantastic new track from the upcoming EP by The Son(s) on Olive Grove Records.
