First: Mother’s Day. Hand-drawn script-y script. The final product followed by 2 process shots.

Next: Father’s Day. Just finished up the final mark for what we are calling “Dadfest”. The design brief was basically: make it look like Obey Giant/Shepard Fairey. The final mark, followed by some alternates that didnt make the cut.

In my travels over the past couple years I come across some great city logos. Logos that have stopped me in my tracks and caused me to snap a photo. One such logo is for the city of Lisbon.

The logo is a ship, with two ravens. Its based on the legend(?) of St Vincent – parton of the city. As the story goes, when the Saint died the body was sent to southern Portugal, and the grave – or tomb – was constantly surrounded by ravens. Or being protected by ravens, I guess, depending on how you interpret the story. Later, the king or whoever sent for the remains of Saint Vincent to return to Lisbon. It was loaded on a ship and sailed for Lisbon, ravens following and circling the whole way.

I did a quick search for city logos and put together a few that I felt were excellent. I’m sure a missed some, so please share!

Finally, on our way home from Portugal, we had to make a connection in Paris – so we decided to make a weekend of it. I had never been to Paris so we went to most of the typical spots: Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre, Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame. We also made some stops at a fancy macaroon shop and the supposedly famous (but overpriced) Paris flea market.

After a couple nights in Porto we drove back to Lisbon before catching a flight to Paris. On the drive we stopped in the town of Cascais – part fishing village, part coastal restort town – walked around and had lunch.

My wife and I recently returned from a vacation in Portugal (with a stop in Paris on the way home). Lisbon, our first destination, was a highlight. A bit like San Francisco, with the hills, and the trolleys, history of earthquakes and a bridge that looks almost exactly like the Golden Gate (built by the same architect and everything). But Lisbon is much older, and bit grungier, and full of fun places, shops, and coffee houses to explore.

After Lisbon, we made a 30 minute drive northwest to Sintra – a small town in the hills full of ancient castles, mansions and palaces. We only had time to visit three or four before driving north to Porto.
