For this week’s episode, we watched the John Carpenter directed 1988 cult classic, They Live. Starring “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Keith David. This movie spawned multiple parodies, is referenced in the “OBEY” posters created by artist Shepard Fairey, and contains the greatest line ever committed to cellulose: “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum.”

Sadly, between the recording of this podcast and today, Roddy Piper passed away from a cardiac arrest at the age of 61. We talked about what we wanted to do with the podcast, and decided to go ahead and release it, as we all really love the movie, and Roddy himself. Our thoughts go out to Roddy’s family, friends, and many many fans. He will be missed.

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you gave David Lynch a large budget and asked him to direct a Sci-Fi epic co-starring a mostly naked Sting, wonder no longer! In 1984, Lynch directed Dune, a movie that took over a decade, and several aborted attempts, to produce. Based on the classic Frank Herbert penned Sci-Fi novel of the same name, Dune turned out to be such a mess, Lynch has disowned it. So, of course, we had to watch it, joined by my improv buddy Marc R. Sorry in advance, and remember: Walk without rhythm, and you won’t attract the worm!

A sequel to the 1981 horror / transphobia film Sleepaway Camp, 1989’s Sleepaway Camp IIstars Pamela Springsteen as the “reformed” slasher from the first film, though it takes basically no time at all for her to go back to her murderous ways. It’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves at one point or another: What if Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, decided to do an acid head version of The Muppet Show as a movie? Well, it turns out the answer was waiting for us all along in the form of 1989’s Meet the Feebles! Aaron Buell (2 Guys, a Girl, and a Goblin) joins us as we watch a movie featuring a Kermit the Frog lookalike strung out on heroin, throwing knives at a hedgehog and having Deer Hunter style Vietnam flashbacks, a morbidly obese hippo with a food addiction, a puppet fly that eats feces from toilet, a fox who sings about sodomy, and much more!

After the disappointment of S. Darko, we couldn’t have been more pleased with the awesome spectacle of 1970’s Italian film making that is Starcrash. Caroline Munro as Stella Star jiggles her way through 94 minutes of pure camp, complimented by the immensely talented Christopher Plummer, and a pre-Knight Rider David Hasselhoff. Made a scant 18 months after Star Wars, Starcrash is a blatant attempt to cash in on Lucas’ success. This movie features all the things you loved about Star Wars, just done on a much lower budget and with less skill: Droids!…Sort of Not quite light sabers! Man torpedoes! We’re joined by Lauren Wood to talk about all this and more in this Italian gem.

S. Darko or “If only Mike Ditka was driving the bus…”

If you liked 2001’s Donnie Darko, be prepared to hate the direct to DVD sequel S. Darko! Set years after the events of Donnie Darko, S. Darko follows Donnie’s unicorn loving little sister, Samantha, as she sort of indie rock girls her way across the American Southwest. In making what is essentially a rehashing of the first movie, the creators of S. Darko somehow failed to understand the universe Donne Darko created, creating one of the most infuriating sequels we’ve ever watched. The movie may suck, but this episode doesn’t, so check it out!

GLRL Minisode 3: “S. Darko” (2009)

Well, it only took us 3 movies to find one that was an absolute stinker. S. Darko is the sequel to the much better 2001 movie, Donnie Darko, and follows Donnie’s younger sister Samantha. Aside from one producer and the titular lead Daveigh Chase, no one who worked on the first movie worked on this sequel, which is usually the mark of quality. Check out the Minisode, and we’ll be back next week to slog through this utter disappointment.

The original pilot to Green Light, Red Light, we decided to release this second, because Hausu was such a ridiculous bit of nonsense, but we couldn’t not release it after what we put Eric through. For episode 2, we tackle the 1988 Nicolas Cage movie Vampire’s Kiss. If you ever wondered where the creepy Nic Cage meme came from, you’ve now found it. That’s this movie. It’s actually one of the less weird things Cage does throughout the film. Check it out!

By this point, Nic Cage had already starred in films like Moonstruck and Raising Arizona, so we knew he was capable of something good, but things take a sharp turn to the absurd in this movie that launched a thousand memes. Seriously, that creepy Nic Cage staring meme? That’s this movie. It’s actually one of the less weird things Cage does throughout the film. Check it out!

I’m telling you, man, I’m going to win an Oscar in 1995!
