The reason?

As part of my Ma in Documentary Phtotography at Falmouth we are set micro projects and this is one of them. II'm exploring new ways of working and looking at how other people can connect with images and art. 

Why should I ?

I got talking to a good friend Gareth Jarvis, who is an insanely talented photographer that specializes in wet plate collodion images. You should definitely take a peek at his work here it's amazing. He was meeting Mishka Shubaly at the show before making a plate for him the following day. so I tagged along to have a break from editing.

Mishka was great I hadn't heard him before but brutally honest and beautifully dark is probably the only way I can describe him. he has a had a pretty crazy ride and told us a few stories, so many in fact he's wrote a book and book on sale. check him out here.
 

You can check him out on his UK tour there's dates all over the place including Falmouth my University town and old home of Bangers. It's great to see someone make the effort to get all the way down to Cornwall.

Thank you for doing what you do and for doing it for so long. I'm really sad I can't make the last show today. Just a post to say thanks again for everything you've done. Your music has been a massive part of my life that always seems to echo thoughts and feelings on the world that I've shared with fast, loud ,( and for bonus points- Cornish) music that always makes me feel better for listening to it. I put a few videos and images together as it seemed fitting it being your last show.

You're great guys that I've had the pleasure of photographing, filming and chatting to over the years. I recall many a time listening to records at times in my life were I was freaking out and I always being able to refocus and reframe my perspective using music. You've been a big part of my work and a massive inspiration to me as person and an artist.

Plural Eyes 4. I had Plural eyes 3 and after the latest Premiere Pro update, creative cloud, (15.3 release) I then found out that it wasn't supported. So I had to spend money on Plural Eyes 4. So if you're on a tight budget hold on until you can update it otherwise you can get caught out. 

Ma in Photography; I applied and got accepted with a scholarship to Falmouth Uni to undertake a masters course. I did my Ba there and I can't wait to get stuck into it. It's a flexible learning course and it means I can carry on working as a professional photographer and film maker.  I'll have more on that on a later post.

Falmouth Flexible Learning

The last few days have been absolutely devastating and has brought up a clear division of the country. Just to get it out there from the outset I'm a remain voter and I dont want to go into why and reasons but it's definitely a weird time at the moment.

I have never been so worried about the future ever, Wales in particular stands to lose so much money from leaving the E.U. It effects me as a photographer, a film maker, and as a welsh citizen. Cardiff in Europe was an event put on as an appreciation of belonging to Europe. It was nice to see a lot of people out sharing their thoughts and feelings on what has happened. 

Everybody's facebook streams are ablaze with opposing sides arguing and a lot of people I have seen have started to actually 'cull' those people that do not share their ideas. We should all pull together and not do this, we should try our best to turn down the heat a little and hash this out. It's really clear that there's a huge division here and post vote there's actually no plan at all. It's a very sorry state of affairs and I want to say personally that I want to be in the European Union. I've yet to find a legitimate reason to doubt it with supporting facts and evidence. 

It seems that the leave result has legitimised groups with anti immigration agenda's, there has been a spike in terrible acts of violence and I am disgusted to see over 200 incidents reported over the last few days. We all stand together in fighting this. Don't ignore it, if you see racist abuse / violence in the street say something and/or call the police. We cannot let these people spread hate.

The New Record, how long has it been in the making, do you enjoy recording where did you guys go to?
 

We made the record in January, did the whole thing over 2 weekends. We recorded at Actiontrack in Somerset, where our drummer works. Tim from Woahnows produced it and was super fun to work with! I don't usually enjoy recording that much, it's pretty laborious and repetitive, but we actually had a lot of fun recording this album. It helps when you're in good company! 

Writing, how do you guys write, everyone is different but do you bring stuff in and jam it out or is there someone that will get the bones of it done and the rest of you tweak it out after?
 

We don't really have a set way of writing to be honest. Sometimes I'll write the basics of a song, then we'll jam it out, structure it etc... all together. Other times we'll build a song collectively around one riff, which is how it's going more and more now. I write the lyrics, but the music is written collectively. 

Do you have a favourite track and why? 
 

I think my favourite track is the opener, but then again that does change. There's a new song going up imminently called Shit Sticks which is also another one I really enjoy playing. 

Do you think your changing after each record what sort of direction do you think that might be? 

Yeah I think this record is definitely a new direction for us. As a whole it's got a more indie feel to it. And there's also a lot more fuzziness in the guitar sound as opposed to how bright and clean the earlier EP's were. We've also slowed down the pace a little bit, whereas we used to just want to play our songs as fast as we physically could! 

Tours and other upcoming stuff any big plans anything exciting?
 

We're launching the album in our 2 hometowns at the end of this month!

I'm hoping to get a lot more interviews done with various bands promoters and record labels over the next few months. If you are keen member of the punk rock community, please share and tell people about the blog, as it's a great way for people to have a look at some images and videos of shows they might have missed.  But also I'm hoping that it'll showcase a little bit about the reason behind me making the documentary film and my intentions. I want to document the scene and show off the people that work hard to put on shows, play in bands, record and pretty much show huge amounts of support to other humans. It's a great space and I need your help to get it made. So even if it's sharing a post on fb or getting in touch, if you're a label or band please get involved. It really makes being poor, lugging around really expensive gear and sleeping like 5 hours a day worth it when someone appreciates your efforts.

Better late then never.  I shot this a while back, with the help of Mr James Clarke (camera op and general tall person duties) and also Matthew Stroud managed to record a live out from the desk, which is interesting for me to edit with as opposed to a general collection of live mics in a guerilla style . So here we have Human Heat, one of Cardiff's latest projects containing part Deadlines part Masts it's definitely a fair way apart in sound to both. I loved it, it really reminded me of a nostalgic kinda early 00's sound. I asked the guys a few questions here we go (There's another 2 videos and interviews to come, but I'm crazy busy and battling to keep on top, so a few weeks to wait for them).

Fuzz (Chris Chucas) -How did HH come about, your all busy in other bands?

Tom Watkins- I wrote a few songs that didn't really fit with masts and demoed them at home. Charlie heard them and we decided to start something up and then got Sean on board. 

Fuzz -Do you treat it differently to other projects , do you write (if so do you do it with the same process)?

Fuzz - If you had to say what sound you have what would it be, was it intended or accidental?

Fuzz - The sound was going towards an indie punk vibe so I demoed some more and then we worked on them together

Fuzz - Playing in multiple bands seems like a pretty normal thing for punk bands these days, do you think so and why that might be? 

Tom W - I think in Cardiff at the moment there's a solid community of musicians and bands who just want to play and share music, there seems to be a good buzz at the moment.

Fuzz - What's up next, ep recording etc?

Tom W- We've just finished recording so we'll put up a demo soon and then an ep at some point in the future.

I've been a massive fan of these guys for years and there songs cut through with a harsh slap to this face. It always makes me feel better when hearing these guys. I missed them in Manchester where I was told they absolutely nailed it along with everyone else who played at The Alphabet Brewing Co. Bash. A few shows to go before another big one @ Deadpunk 2016 which I'm so gutted I can't make but what you gonna do.

Anyway have a listen  I managed to grab a live video but I didn't actually catch up with them personally I was on the verge of not making the show at all due to being ridiculously busy with film proposals and other projects. Still glad I made myself go even if I was a zombie on 4 hours sleep.

It's crazy but literally feeling like I was gonna fall asleep like an hour before and feeling ill and run down, all of that faded away with the first chord. I'd love to catch up with them before they leave the UK maybe grab an interview for the documentary. Shame I can't make Deadpunk, if you can make it, do it, it's probably the best thing you'll do with your life this sat.

Lead singer and front man Dave Merrick decided to organise the event as he has a personal connection with his partner being diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year. Unfortunately she wasn't able to attend the show on doctors advice not to be in crowds because of a weaker immune system. The guys played a solid set and Dave also read a poem written by Helen, I have to say it was pretty moving and I had a few tears to try and hide.

They raised a lot of money for the cause which hopefully will help fight this horrible disease that affects so many. I have so much admiration for the brave men and women that battle cancer and the video will be up soon so you can watch it yourself.  It would be great if you could support the cause, so get over to either Cancer Research UK or Target Ovarian Cancer and make a difference.

Sweaty hot house show punk rock. Last night i went along to Pipedreams and Birdskulls first show of the tour (pretty sure) with support from Cardiff's Deadlines. it was awesome. Such a good turn out from the BOOMING Cardiff DIY scene. It was rad seeing how many people came out for it. Not totally confirmed but some really keen voices wanting to get involved with the documentary, which by the way I am going to start filming for very soon so please keep posted and follow me on twitter and Instagram for updates. I really need YOU the fans and the DIY community to help make me document the amazing things going on. If you have something cool that you think is relevant or want to get involved Im looking to interview Bands, tour managers, record labels activists and anyone involved in making a positive change to loosely related to the punk rock scene. I didn't even get through the Petrol Girls show images and video but the 19th ofJanuary rolled in as my red eyes are fighting to work against a lightroom screen with hundreds of images to sift through. Nevertheless today (yesterday? the 19th Jan, Sam Dabb of Le Pub Newport put on the Barnett Brothers consisting of Menzingers Greg Barnett and Bobby Barnett (Captain we're sinking) both performing acoustic sets. unfortunately I was working solidly all day and I only just made it in time for Greg who was on last. I recorded some video and briefly talked about the documentary film which is materialising and how I need both UK and US bands to get involved. 

It was a special set for me to watch as I've been a Menzingers fan for years and I've lived through their records, when I say that I mean when you listen to a band a lot and for a long time you have life events and parts of you that you can reflect back on with the record that you were listening to at the time. Being in a few bands myself I always have a handful of menzingers songs in the covers list, I'm soo glad I didn't miss this. If you're new to Menzingers or Captain we're sinking I suggest you get on it I might make a spotify playlist for those of you unfamiliar. Obviously buy songs directly from them as it supports the scene and helps them do what they do best when you can . 

They still have a few dates left on this UK tour so make sure you get out to it if you can.

So January has forced itself into our lives and I have to say that I have not had a second spare. I have been commissioned to produce a music video for 'Masts' a Cardiff band I've crossed paths with several times during filming for the documentary project about the punk rock scene. There signed to Jealous Lovers records and are launching an album in February, so the music video is to tie in with that. I was left to come up with the concept and after having several talks with the songwriter Tom Watkins, I developed an idea.

I had to change the original idea after a few trials with props and camera techniques, but essentially I had to change it due to the constraints of the project. These include: budget, actors and locations availble. It all changed quite a lot throughout the pre and production stages. There was plenty of adapting going on, but as I mentioned I'll be posting more specific posts about that later.

The Punk Rock Documentary

January has a lot of amazing punk rock bands passing through south wales. I went to the DIY CDF Petrol Girls show. Unfortunately some of the band got really sick just before but the rest of them pulled a in promptue acoustic set together it was pretty special . i shot some video for it but I need to ask permission to show it first. That can be later. But Masts Deadlines and Bicycle Thieves all played amazing sets at The Full Moon Club and I shot some video from them also. I ran 3 cameras and sound on my own so it;s not perfect at all but its something. I really need to find someone to shoot gigs with it would be way easier and way higher quality if I could find someone else that could help me out. Anyway I quickly threw this together after the show, it's a Deadlines new song.

So I need to focus on the Masts video for the rest of january and I may be going on Tour with them and Deadlines in February. Aside from that I will be focusing on booking more interviews with punk rock bands and keeping on top of my other work, I have a few art shoots booked up for some fashion clients and it's going to be tricky keeping on top of everything.

Luckily I love what I do so it doesn't really matter. Work hard think later. More soon. Fuzz ;)

I know I hardly ever update my blog but thats because im super busy. Nevertheless I have been thinking and I need to post more about what I've been doing online and a blog is the perfect way to do it i'm just a scatter brain with all the work on. So watch this space as I am going to share a bit more of the 'Punk Rock Documentary; that is still yet to be named properly. Lot's of exciting bands coming on board, as soon as i sort out the back log of projects over the next month I'm going get out some older edits and stills that have not been published yet in the run up to the kickstarter campaign. By the way, it was only meant to be cut away footage but the boys from Bicycle Thieves really wanted to have a look so I slapped it together. If there are any other film makers and or camera ops that want to get involved with some of the projects you see me working on I can always use another pair of hands as I mostly work alone and a second camera op is amazing to have ;).

I've actually yet to post the Apologies images yet but Bicycle Thieves kinda wanted something to share along with some exciting news they've had which you can read about later. Worth looking out for them.

This Cardiff band, consisting of 3 earnest young men desperately appealing to your sensibilities and raising questions that should make you think about what you're doing and more importantly what you should be doing. To me they are a prime example of the progressive and positive thinkers, getting proactive and doing something, as opposed to nothing. Confirmed to be contributors to the working title documentary film about to be shot in the coming months (info here). More details are on the website.  Please follow share and like this film needs all the support it can get.

I like to keep fresh by taking the camera for a walk. When you make money from taking images it's nice to make an effort to just go out and play with the camera, the reason that made you take photos in the first place. I went for a walk to the Bay, around and back and it turned into 19km.  #photography #inspiration #streetphotography #cardiff

After striking up a conversion with DIY Cardiff made up of Charlie (Deadlines) Gavin (Dividers) and Mike (Life Under Bombs) from previous shows, I offered to come and hang out photographing all the bands and also to shoot some live music videos. Doing this was pretty tricky as you can imagine but so worth it. I think I lost about 2 KG in weight from sweating so much it was ridiculous. It ties in well with the documentary, I really feel it's important to document the scene and the people that make it. There's so many positive messages and a good atmosphere that comes along with the genre. I  think that people are not exposed to feelings and ethos behind punk rock today. It's nice to see so many decent people feeling the same way about these weird times we live in. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, you're better off listening to these bands of your own accord, as I'm just geeking out and failing to make my point. I use images and film to try and make my points.

I've been super busy organizing moving house, meeting clients to discuss their weddings I have to shoot, and also taking the IELTS exam needed for a Canadian visa, so...super busy!

I did however manage to squeeze in some time with Deadlines, the Cardiff based punk rock band which was cool. Hopefully they will be contributing to 'Don't write it off' the documentary project. I also walked up a mountain (be it a little one) with Becky..

Shot some more Raw footage using the Magic Lantern 2.1.3 with MLV modules. Just playing around with the workflow it really is super stable and not too hard to handle in post. Funny story, the lane shot had a Police car patrolling through after, they asked me what i was doing filming etc, but they were really, really friendly. Nice to see the good ones being polite and courteous. Thanks South-Wales Police.
