 While the world mainly knows South Korea for its entertainment industry (incl. K-dramas and K-pop), massive technology industry (such as Samsung, LG or Hyundai), or for its infamous neighbour North Korea, there is a lot more fun facts to discover! South Korea is a unique country in itself, with its stunning nature, delicious food, trendy fashion, and some of the most unique cultural aspects which will definitely leave you surprised.

1.     A lot of Koreans are shopaholic. While Korean societal pressures make people extremely stressed about achieving high grades and building a good career, to many, shopping becomes the best way to relieve the stress and become a little more carefree. No wonder a lot of the fashion stores and shopping malls are open as late (or as early) as 4am!

2.     Getting a plastic surgery is highly acceptable in South Korea. Not only it is ‘acceptable’, but it is something that a lot of the people have done or considered. The most common procedures are nose jobs, double eyelid surgeries, chin and jaw reductions and more. Gangnam is particularly famous for its plastic surgery clinics, and thus, you’ll see the advertisements for the clinics everywhere, including trains, metro stations, billboards, you name it! With practice comes perfection, thus medical tourism has skyrocketed in the last few years with people from all around the world coming here to improve themselves and re-gain their self-esteem.

3.     Men wear make-up too. While in the West makeup is seen as primarily something only women use, however, in South Korea the tables turn. Since the social norms to look pretty are rather high in South Korea, various make-up brands promote make up for both males and females. And it is not just the idols and actors we are talking about, more than 20% of the male population in Korea wear make-up, rounding up to an overall expenditure of USD 900 million a year.

4.     Say ‘Kimchi!’. Not only it is the main side dish available with every meal in South Korea, it is also a word that Koreans use when taking photos. However, we cannot really blame them as kimchi tastes just so delicious… Wondering, would it be alright to compare kimchi with cheese?

5.     Having a beard might stop you from getting a job offer. Ever wondered why none of the K-pop stars have a beard? Actually, a lot of Koreans believe that men with beard are dirty and unhygienic, making them less desirable as the romantic partners too. Not only that, but having a beard (no matter how well-groomed it might be), could act as a potential drawback in getting a job too.

6.     You can find sexual organs freely displayed in the public gardens. Before you think anything else, the sexual organs are the famous sculptures located in either Haesindang Park or the Loveland in Jeju island. Visiting either of the two parks requires one to have a good sense of humour and an open mind for sure. It will definitely be a trip like no other! However, highly unadvisable to bring the children there…

7.     Love motels and DVD rooms. Since the rent in Seoul and Korea itself is rather high, a lot people live with their parents till their late 20s. Thus, couples wanting some privacy embrace the love motels and DVD rooms. While in the West motels seem like dirty places, however, in South Korea, the motels are hygienic and clean, and vary greatly in style and luxuriousness. For those not wanting to spend the night away, DVD rooms work as a better option, as they can cuddle up on the coach while watching a movie or two in a private room.

8.     Crime recreation. If you are a fan of crime and thriller shows, then this one is for you. In South Korea, a criminal accused of rape or murder might be asked by law to recreate their crime in public. This can be watched by the general public and media, damaging criminal’s reputation for good (in both senses).

9.     Dogs on a dinner table. This is often exaggerated in the West, as people assume that everyone in Korea eats dogs. Well, this is actually not the case, as the act itself is becoming more controversial and you would have to really do your research to find a restaurant selling dog meat. While dog meat has been part of Korean culture for ages, now, there are more people visiting dog cafes to play with the dogs rather than eat them.

10.  There are certain rules one must obey when drinking in South Korea. While you can legally enjoy alcohol in the public spaces, however, there are certain social norms that one must follow. One shall not pour oneself a drink and your drinking partners should watch out for your glass to be always full. Also, when drinking with someone older than you, one must look away when raising your glass to your mouth. If you are working in an office in Korea, it is almost impossible to say no to company’s social nights, where drinking is a must. However, with a huge drinking culture that there is, Korea has invented not only the hangover drinks, but also hangover soups and hangover ice cream too.

If you want to get away from the big city and breathe in a calm countryside atmosphere, look no further! Damyang will make sure you are having a great time while healing your health in the bamboo forest, relaxing by the stunning Gwanbangjerim Forest or admiring the unforgettable Metasequoia-lined road. 1. Gwanbangjerim Forest (관방제림). A unique manmade forest was planted in order to prevent flooding along the gorgeous Damyangcheon Stream. But don’t look away just yet, in the forest you can find a variety of trees, some even 200-300 years old! The forest is said to be one of the most beautiful forests in the whole of South Korea too! 

P.S. If you have a few hours to spare, why not rent a paddleboat in the lake or a bike to see the beauty of the forest from the other side! 

2. Metasequoia-lined road. (메타세쿼아이어길)

 In 2002 named as one of the most beautiful roads in South Korea, the place will make you feel like you’re in a beautiful fairy tale. The metasequoia trees were planted in 1970s, when the road was officially designated as a ‘boulevard’. Since then, the 8.5-kilometer-long boulevard has grown so tall and lush (10-20meter-tall), that it easily covers the road from the sun. Stop the car and get out for a walk. This place will definitely stay in your memories for some time.

3. Meta Provence (메타프로방스). A bit of Europe in a middle of Jeollanam province. The place consists of multiple European style houses, creating another fairy tale kind of experience. It is composed of Fashion outlets, Meta pension and a few more exotic attractions, making it a great stop for shopping, food and some great European style pictures.  

4. Juknokwon Bamboo Forest. (죽녹원) . Opened in 2005, the bamboo forest is the largest of its kind in Korea, and definitely worth a trip from Seoul. Spreading over 310,000 square meters, it is also the most northern bamboo forest in South Korea! The forest also has beautiful pavilions, perfect to take a rest in or to indulge in another photo opportunity. While you are there, we’d recommend visiting the gorgeous Bonghwangnu Observatory, which will reward you with its picturesque views of Damyancheon Stream and the metaseqouia lined lane too! 

P.S. Right in the Bamboo forest, there is a Bamboo museum! Not only can you learn more about the local history and learn about the amazing bamboos, but you can also try the Bamboo Ice Cream!

K-drama location: Iljimae

5. Chuwolsan mountain (731m) (추월산) Shaped like a Buddhist monk lying down, the mountain is formed of forests, rock walls and stones, making it a beautiful sight to see. It is also famous within the locals for its wild medicinal herbs and rare kinds of Chuwolsan orchids. On the mountain, you can also find a mineral spring and a hermitage, giving a perfect opportunity to take a rest before climbing higher. However, do keep in mind, that the peak (although not high) is rather difficult to reach. Combining nature with history, it is interesting to know that the mountain was actually a battlefield during the Imjin War! 

6.Damyangho Lake (담양호). A man-made lake created back in 1976. Due to its picturesque location at the base of Chuwolsan and Geumseongsan Mountains and its crystal-clear waters, it is a great spot for a beautiful morning walk. It is also a habitat to many freshwater fishes, making it a popular place between the locals. 

P.S. Did you know that the delicious bamboo shoot bread (Chuk Sun Bbang 죽순빵)snack was first created by a Damyang native? It was made with real bamboo shoot and delicious Korean brown rice, making it a delicacy nothing compares to. While you are in Damming why not give it a try?

Get ready for a real-life rag to riches tale as we recount the extraordinary life of a man that created one of the most successful and largest motor companies in South Korea and the cow that was sacrificed in the process. 

Chung Yu-Tang (1915—2001) was an ordinary boy born to a poor peasant family in Tongchon-(present North Korea.  He was the eldest son and his Father harboured hopes that he would take over the family farm. Chung barely managed to finish elementary school as he spent most of the time labouring on his parents’ farm.  However, this life-style was far from satisfactory to Chung and thus he started crafting his escape route from the village and poverty. 

At the age of 16 he attempted his first escape from Tongchon. Chung and one of his friend packed their bags and trekked over 15 miles over dangerous pathways across Peachon valley in attempt to find work at Kowon (currently North Korea). They started working at the construction site until his Father recovered his whereabouts and ordered him to return. But Chung hasn’t given up just yet, once everyone forgot about his first stint, he attempted another escape- this time to Seoul (currently South Korea).  He sold one of his family cows and bought a train ticket to Seoul for KRW 70. The mission would have been successful, but his father found him two months later and returned him to Tongchong. 

Fortunately, killing Chungs ambition wasn’t as easy as his family thought. At the age of 18 he made his final escape. He left at night- once again bound to Seoul. Upon his arrival, he took up any jobs he could find to make ends meet. Eventually he was employed by a rice store as a delivery man. Soon he became the integral part of the shop and was promoted to bookkeeper and accountant within first six months of employment. Chung drove moderate rice shop to prosperity and therefore upon the existing owner’s death he inherited the shop and became sole proprietor of his first business. He changed the name of the shop to Kyungil rice shop and made good returns. During the Japanese occupation, his business ran into trouble due to colonial policies and thus his first business came to an end. 

Chung, however, was not one to give up and even though he spent few years back in his family’s home, he had no intention to return to farming. He hatched a new plan and soon was on route to Seoul on his fifth escape from hometown. After some consideration he decided to open a service garage, the venture was successful and soon grew from 20 to 70 employees.  However, in 1943 Japanese occupational government merged the garage with steel plant and he was forced out of his dream and once again on a train back to his farm. 

Once Korea gained independence from Japan in 1946, Chung saw another opportunity to escape the farm. He returned promptly to Seoul to take advantage of the post-war rebuilding and founded company called Hyundai. He won number of significant contracts with Korean Nuclear Plants and Railways. His brother spoke good English and therefore they were able to secure some American Military contracts which made his business even bigger success. From there on Hyundai was on its pathway to become one of the largest and most successful conglomerates started in South Korea. 

In 1998 Chung led 500 cows across Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea as a repayment for the cow he stole from his father to make his escape to Seoul. Chung hoped cattle would support struggling families in North Korea and pose as a symbolic gesture for re-unification of the peninsula.

Since K-dramas and K-pop reached a worldwide audience, the Korean government has decided to open a new government department to support Hallyu (Korean Wave). The first wave being such a great success, it is believed that bringing various aspects of Korean culture into light, it could further increase people’s interest in South Korea. 

If you follow sports, you have probably heard about the famous Korean footballer Park Ji-Sung, or the famous figure skater Yuna Kim. If you have an artsy soul, you have probably listened to Yiruma numerous times, without ever realizing that he is a Korean talent, and if you are a gamer, you have probably won multiple times on Lineage, which is, again, a video game produced my Korean masterminds. 

However, there are some more aspects of Korean culture worth discovering:

1. Korean cosmetics. If you’ve seen at least one K-drama or K-pop music video, you have probably admired their flawless skin and perfect make-up. Well, you’re not alone! With an increasing popularity of Hallyu Wave, the sales of Korean cosmetics have soared drastically too, as more and more fans are keen to try out the Korean beauty products. 2. Korean Webtoons. If you have seen Itaewon Class, then you definitely have heard of a word ‘webtoon’. Going abroad is all about exploration. You’ve probably checked a few places you’d love to see in Korea, but are not exactly sure how to get there. And that’s when Naver Maps come to help. At some point, you’ll probably need to contact someone on the phone. Usually, you’d use apps such as WhatsApp, Viber or even Facebook itself. But in South Korea, there is no better app to have than Kakao Talk. Everyone has it (yes, grandparents included), and it is a great way to keep in touch with your friends once you’re back home too. However, be aware, the app is rather addictive, as it’s cute characters will definitely make you fall in love!

Subways are always tricky, let it be London’s underground system, complex Tokyo train lines or the subway in Seoul. As scary as they might seem, it is something one cannot do without. But to your avail, Seoul’s subway system is rather easy to use and the helpful apps like Subway Korea will put your mind at ease

6.     Seoul Bus

It took us three visits to Korea, until we finally felt comfortable enough getting on a bus. Most of the busses don’t have any signs in English, and it can be rather difficult to know when exactly do you need to get off. However, having Seoul Bus app will definitely help you out! Although many prefer a subway, but for some routes, taking a bus is a much more convenient and cost effective method than the subway.

7.     Papago/ Naver Dictionary

Unless you speak fluent Korean, there is bound to be some struggle conversing with the locals. Mind us, a lot of people do speak English in Korea, but if you’ll happen to visit a local shop in one of the smaller towns, you are most likely going to need a translation app. Both, Papago and Naver Dictionary are great for translating text, words and pictures. But don’t threat about the language barrier, kindness and body language have no borders.

8.     Teuida

Speaking of learning Korean, in our opinion, there is no better app for this than Teuida. Not only does it give you a great base for simple Korean phrases (with an increasing difficulty level), but it actually gives you a chance to SPEAK the language. It is one of our favourite apps as its lessons are fun to follow and you get to learn phrases for everyday situations! Also, if you are a K-pop fan, it is a great way to meet some of the top Korean celebrities such as Nancy from Momoland and have a conversation with her!

9.     LOOK / SNOW

Although this app is definitely not a must-have, but it’s still great to know about it. Ever wondered how Koreans look so great in their pictures? Well, there is a secret to it. And it’s called a SNOW app, the app lets you apply different make-up styles and even has an easy to follow video editing tools, making it an overall useful app to have on your phone.

1. Explore the city of Yeosu. While there are tons of rural places to see in Yeosu, don’t forget to pay attention to the beautiful spots within the city too! We recommend visiting the local Yi Sun Shin park, where you can come face-to-face with history as you explore the famous turtle ships, which were used in the battles all throughout 1800s!

Since the city hosted World Expo in 2012, one cannot go without visiting the Expo Park and the Big O too, there is always something interesting on display, so definitely check it out! You could also easily reach the manmade island of Odongdo (오동도) and spend the day surrounded by lovely Camelia flowers (November-April is the best time to spot them).

2. Hyangiram Temple is the best-known temple in the area and it has its’ reasons why. Founded 1400 years ago, the small temple stands on the rocky coast at the end of Dolsan Island. Being one of the four Buddhist hermitages in South Korea, there are seven cave stones welcoming you as you climb the steps to reach this stunning temple. It is also believed that if you pass all of these caves, your wish will come true! However, don’t threat if you are not much of a hiker, the temple is easily accessible by public transport too! Once you are at the top, you will be greeted by expansive views of the sparkling blue sea dotted with many islands.

3. Dolsan Island, the biggest island in Yeosu, and the one that every traveler must visit. The island is a great escape from the city as most of the area is rural, offering various hiking paths with some of the most beautiful views. If you are looking for some more adventure, why not take the cable car instead? You’ll surely enjoy the views all around you. You can also get there by walking across the beautifully ornated Dolsan Bridge, which is also one of the must-see sights in the evening sky.

4. Visit the colorful Angels Mural Village (천사벽화마을). It wouldn’t be a South Korean city if it wouldn’t have at least one alley featuring works of local artists. The colorful Angels Mural Village being no exception, it allows one to step into an animation world giving some great photo opportunities! Enjoy the carefree atmosphere as you sip a cup of coffee at one of the coffee shops in its tiny alleyways or go to the top of the hill and you’ll be able to enjoy the stunning 360-degree views of the city!

5. Yeongchwisan Mountain in Spring.

If you happen to be in South Korea in April, don’t miss a chance to see the whole Yeongchwisan Mountain painted red by the country’s famous spring flower, Azalea. It is a sight like no other, especially as azaleas are famous for its bright red color and wonderful smell. From the top of the mountain, you will be able to admire views of the vast sea while taking in the first sunrays of the spring.

6. Beaches. Whether you’re searching for beaches or the hikes, Yeosu has it all!

Ungcheon (웅천) is one of the most popular beaches in Yeosu and there is a reason why! It is a stunning small beach surrounded by beautiful waters, with plenty of water sports to try out and some of the best restaurants for the local cuisine too. However, it can get a little crowded in the summer as it is well loved by travellers! Mosageum (모사금) is another beautiful place for sunbathers and swimmers wanting to soak in the summer rays. But, if you are up for something completely different, then Manseongri (만성리) might be just the right beach for you! It is covered with shinny black sand making it look rather stunning. It’s a great place for some sightseeing and picture taking indeed. However, be careful in the summer, as the black sand can quickly get extremely hot!

Tip on the local dishes to explore: Spicy Marinated Raw Crabs (양념게장) is on top of the list, as you cannot find it as easily in the other provinces of South Korea. Nothing like you’ve ever tasted before, it will definitely leave you speechless (and in a good way!). There is lots of sea food dishes you should try while on the Southern coast of Korea, however, if you are not a fan of seafood, why not try the famous pork belly or Korean Bbq instead?

No trip to South Korea should be without visiting the famous Yeosu, it is a unique mixture of architecture and nature, and is a great addition to any itinerary.

One of the Top 500 attractions of the world, and the greatest symbol of Seoul, Namsan Tower shines bright as the star itself. The tower has a number of cultural experiences available with 360 degree panoramic views to entertain the eye and a place where your dreams can come true. Read on to find out more!

 Opened in 1969, it was the first general radio and television tower in South Korea, conveniently located on Seoul’s highest hill Mt. Namsan, it stands 479m above the sea level making it one of the tallest towers in Korea! If you get to see Namsan Tower in the dark, you’ll find it illuminated in various colours, as if becoming an unmovable firefly.

What many visitors don’t realize, is that the Namsan Seoul Tower is actually split into two parts: the Seoul Tower Plaza and the N Seoul Tower, where the main observatory is located. At the Seoul Tower Plaza, you can enjoy a hanbok experience (find out which colour represents you best), take numerous photos with your favourite idols (any fans of PSY, 2NE1 or G-dragon?), or visit a Hello Kitty character exhibition to feel a little cuter, and a little closer to your favourite character. The tower also has the latest LED technology on display, when you are there, don’t forget to look up not only at the starry sky of Seoul, but at the ceiling of the Namsan Plaza too (promise you won’t be disappointed!).

However, it is not only Namsan Tower is worth a visit, take your time to explore the various paths on Namsan mountain too. Back in Joseon Dynasty, tens of soldiers stood protecting the fortress wall along its ridges all the while admiring the majestic views of Seoul. The park is also the largest of its kind within the city and has over 60 different species of trees, making it a nature lovers paradise. It is especially beautiful in autumn and spring, when the trees turn into bright colours. After all, there is a good reason why Itaewon Class shot their most important love scene at the Namsan Park itself, along a city wall trail, with the Namsan tower in the background, and an abundance of love in the air. 

P.S. If you’re up for a challenge, why not complete a Seoul City Wall Circuit? It is over 18.6km long, and boasts incredible views of Seoul and Namsan Tower from all around!

 Remember we mentioned that your dreams might come true at Namsan Tower? Actually, there is a good chance! As you step onto the observation plate you will soon be welcomed by thousands of locks admiring the stunning views. The local legend has it, that if you write a wish on the padlock and put it there, it will come true and your love life will flourish in a multitude of colours. Many come here with couples, wish that their relationships would last forever, some come alone hoping their crush would start noticing them, some come here to wish for a success in life and good happenings. Whatever is your dream, once you write it down you are one step closer to achieving it! But if you prefer more typical wish-making ways, look out for a pond, which welcomes a few coins in exchange of a wish come. 

As expected, Namsan Tower is also one of the most romantic places in Seoul, perfect for romantic walks and dates. When you are there, you can feel like you are in some sort of a Korean drama, let it be the “Boys Over Flowers”, “Hotel Del Luna” or your own. Even the ‘Dating Agency Cyrano” was filmed there, there must be really something in the air…

Traditional hanboks featured mostly primary colours (red, yellow, green, blue, white) the colours were arranged based on the wearer’s social and marital status. For example, red and indigo silk hanboks were sure signs of nobility and white and pale coloured cotton Hanboks belonged to the peasants and farmers.

If the girl you cast your eye upon is sporting a yellow and red Hanbok, you, my fellow, are in luck. She is most certainly single and ready to mingle. Not only is she single, but also no commoner, the rich hues of her hanbok suggest a dowry in the chest.  Strike up that conversation and take her on that well chaperoned date. White and pink Hanbok unfortunately might mean that the lady of your choice is of little means, a peasant or a farmer’s daughter. I love Korean cinema. It keeps on feeding me good movies, compelling stories with a rich subtext, and fascinating images.

I am super excited about sharing my love for films, and I get to talk about whatever features I want (as long as it’s Korean, obviously). However, unbelievably enough (?), having too much choice is making me anxious. I am actually overthinking this. *Fake shocked gasp for anyone who knows me*.

Hence, after much thoughts and drafts, I have decided to talk about Miss Baek (Lee Ji-won; 2018). I wanted to inaugurate the review section with a feature that I liked and felt more people should watch, but also with one made by a woman and with a female main character. 

So, as Adriene would say, hop into something comfy and let’s get started.

It's winter. The body of Jeong Myung-sook is found by detective Jang-sup. The deceased was the mother of Baek Sang-ah. The latter is, you guessed it, THE Miss Baek from the title and therefore the main character. Jang-sup and Miss Baek are friends (actually, if they had to choose a Facebook status in 2010, it would be “it’s complicated”).

Sang-Ha was beaten by her mom as a child, and then left to the orphanage. She’s not so happy when she realizes Jang-sup has actively been looking for her mom. The finding of the body forces the protagonist to start a mourning progress.

With her mom’s death, (not so) secretly soft-hearted Sang Ha takes a neighbour’s girl under her wing. The child, 9 years-old Kim Ji-Eun, is mistreated by her dad and her step-mom. Ji-eun takes a growing place in the young lady’s life. The bound the two of them develop helps them in their respective life journeys. 

Indeed, the feature is moving, Baek is touching and has a nice and interesting story arc – without being too obvious and in your face. It has humour (especially with Jang-sup’s sister) which is much appreciated, especially for a first feature that is defined as belonging to the drama genre. The acting is topnoch and the cinematography is nice to look at. Congratulations to Lee Ji-won (filmmaker), all the actors including Han Ji-min (who plays Sang-Ha) and all the crew, including Kang Kuk-hyun (cinematography).

Last words from me: watch the movie, it’s good. Watch the movie, it’s only 1 hour 38, or less than 5 Friends episodes. Watch it with something to eat, as the characters share many mouth-watering meals on screen. Watch it and get excited for the filmmaker’s next feature (Bigwang- due 2020).

As Japan surrendered in 1945, the U.S. and Soviet troops stormed to Korea to station themselves for the world of ‘peace’. The Soviets coming from the North, stationed themselves from Yalu river down to the 38th parallel, while the U.S. positioned itself from 38th parallel down to the very South. However, this wasn’t the long sought end to the occupation and cruelty, as in 1950, on the 25th of June, North Korea marched to the South igniting a three-year long war between the countries that used to be one. Although the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed on 27th of July, 1953 and the war was stopped, up until today many people feel at loss, as families were divided with no way of seeing each other again.

Did the people of Korean Peninsula wanted to divide? Or was the Korean Peninsula caught between the two competing superpowers: United States and the Soviet Union? It was seemingly one united country, ruled by a number of dynastic kingdoms, up until it got occupied by Japan in 1910. However, after the Japanese occupation, the Soviet Union and the United States made their own decision to divide Kore into two, without giving Korea a chance to speak. Seemingly, the Korean War was a manifestation of Cold War between two world superpowers that emerged after World War II (USA and the Soviet Union). It was also a first “proxy war” between super powers in a third-party country with lasting consequences that divided peninsula for many years to come. 

Thus, after the division, the Soviet Army set up a communist regime in the area north of the 38th parallel, while the U.S. supported anti-communist regime in the south of 38th parallel. Thus, most middle-class Koreans fled south during the war, where the majority of the Korean population resides today. 

Although primarily it was believed that the two countries will leave Korea alone and let the Koreans figure it out, however, the Cold War intervened, and neither the Soviet Union nor the U.S. wanted to give in to the other. Further, in 1948, the United States let Koreans to determine their future, with placing Syngman Rhee (1875-1965) in a Korean formed government in Seoul. While Syngman Rhee showed strong anti-communist beliefs, the Soviet Union has placed strong communist beliefs supporter Kim Il Sung (1912-1994) as the first premier of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in Pyongyang. While neither of the dictators were content with having only half of Korea, the tensions between the borders continued and as much as 10,000 soldiers from both sides combined were killed before the Korean War even begun.

As tensions increased, in 1950 the Korean War emerged lasting over three years, and killing between 3-5 million people, including civilians. While this was the war between the Koreas, the U.S. has stepped in to protect South Korea, as it was feared that the communist regime might spread further in the world, if the North Korea with the help of Soviet Army occupies South Korea and imposes its communist regime. 

Although the Korean War had a huge impact on both Koreas, the issue of reunification remained unchanged, as each party believe they are using the ‘true’ regime to represent Korea. Even though, the Korean war brought a number of deaths and the Korean peninsula stayed divided as it was, with a clear-cut division zone being the 38th parallel, also known as a demilitarized zone (DMZ), which, contrary to its name, is one of the most guarded borders in the world.

Unlike any other division, the 2-mile-wide DMZ remains sealed with little to no movement between the borders. So much so, that the holders of South Korean passport are not allowed on tourist trips to the DMZ, nor there are any flights between Seoul and Pyongyang.

The division and different governments have made the North and the South Korea completely different. While South Korea continues developing a strong economy and positive international presence, the North Korea remains to be closed to the whole world, ruled by one family for three generations and remains economically underdeveloped. Further, the country puts most of its finance into nuclear weapon development programs, which further creates tensions between the two Koreas.

Recently, the hopes of unification emerge again, as South Korea welcomed North Korean athletes to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, making it a huge step of trust from both parties.  The two leaders have also met in 2018 inter-Korean summit at the Joint Security Area (JSA) hoping to improve the relationship between the two countries. 

However, the inter-Korean conflict remains intact, but the hopes of unification lie in the hearts of Koreans, unable to see their families again, until the day of unification.

Is there a possibility that Christian Hans Anderson has drawn his inspiration for Little Mermaid in Jeju Island? Most likely not, but there is a good reason why he should have.

Jejus island has become home to one of the most unique mermaid societies, where women have established themselves as deep-sea divers (Haenyeo) and reversed the traditional gender roles by becoming sole seafood winners.

Deep sea diving has been a long tradition on Jeju island in the southernmost part of South Korea. The first record of female Haenyeo appears in 17th century. It is speculated that men were busy fishing at sea or completing military assignments and therefore women went deep-sea diving in order to harvest seafood. Since then, the tradition has been passed down the female line and has become exclusively a female occupation.

At the beginning of 20th century as the seafood commercial value began to rise, the demand for Haenyeo women has soared and gave women within the community a leading role.  Haenyeo have become one of the first women in Korea to become completely economically independent of their husbands potentially as early as 17th century.

For any of you pondering this career path, this profession is no walk in a park (one of the reasons men are not doing it). The Haenyeo profession requires extreme endurance and physical and mental strength as they dive 10-20metres under the sea without oxygen masks or any other sub-aqua protective gear. Scientists are fascinated by these women due to their super-human ability to hold breath for extensive periods of time and endure extreme under-water pressure.

Most Haenyeo continue their work until they are 80-90 years old, however, the numbers are rapidly decreasing as many women in the island choose to pursue less straining careers in the mainland Korea or within tourism industry in Jeju.

When they are not diving the deep-waters, Haenyeo harvest the land, look after their children and provide for their families. So, the next time you think of Aqua Superheroes, think less Jason Momao in the Aquaman and more Haenyeo of Jeju Island.

Yulgok Yi I (1536-1584) one of the most prominent Korean Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty. He is said to be one of the smartest people in Korea, as by the age of seven Yi I has already finished his lessons in the Confucional classics and by the age of 40 he was one of the most trusted people by the King, and one of the top political figures of the time.

If you look closely you can see a watermelon surrounded by silent insects. The picture was painted by the mother of Yi I, Shin Saimdang herself (the lady on the 50,000KRW). Her paintings are exhibited at Seoul Museum and receive many viewers as her works shine through with energy and its fine details and seasonal changes (unique for the 16th century).

Fun Fact: During the Joseon period watermelons were highly prized. So much so that the old tales would say that one of the reasons why watermelons are filled with so many seeds is to prevent people from eating them too quickly and thus protecting them from stomachaches.

4th King of the Joseon dynasty, who is also a creator of the Korean alphabet Hangul King Sejong the Great (1397-1450). Before the invention of Hangul, people in Korea mainly used Hanja (Chinese characters), this meant that literacy was only attainable by the richest, leaving the poor in the dark. The King realized the issue and created a simple 28 letter alphabet, with which, people could learn how to read and write in days!

The picture at the back represents one of the greatest scientific discoveries in the Korean history- Honcheonui, Astrometer. It is interesting to know that the founder of Honcheonui, Jang Young Sil, was born a slave of the government offices. Shin Saimdang (1504-1551) has gained a precious place on the 50,000KRW as one of the most known women in Korean history. She was not only a painter, but a great writer, poet and calligraphist. Although the world knows her as Shin Saimdang, her real name remains unknown. Despite her great talents, the Joseon Dynasty was male-dominated, and thus her name itself did not make history.

What does the picture on the back represent?

The back on the banknote represents two vertical paintings of the Joseon Dynasty: ‘Wolmaedo’ and ’Pungjugdo’.

Fun Fact: Shin Saimdang made a huge imprint in Korean history, and is the first woman on a Korean Won, thus in 2017, TV series Saimdang, Memoir of Colors were introduced to discover more of her personality and life through her works of art.

1. Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve

You cannot say you’ve been to Suncheon until you took a picture at the famous Suncheon Bay. Standing as the brightest crown jewel of the city, it offers stunning views of the coastal wetland like none other. Did you know it houses over 200 species of birds, expansive fields of reeds and colonies of seablite? It is a true biologists haven, and it is included in the Ramsar protected wetlands list too. While the views from the plain are stunning, do not threat to go on a small hike up to Yongsan Observatory for the magnificent views of Suncheon Bay spread out across the horizon.

2. Suncheon Bay Nation Garden

It seems impossible not to mention numbers when we talk about Suncheon Bay National Garden. Occupying over 1.12km2 it has become a home to over 100 species of flowers and 500 species of trees! But it is not only numbers that make this place impressive. The condensed fields of tulips, royal azaleas and canola flowers will keep your eyes glued for hours (especially if you visit in May!).

While you are there, don’t forget to visit the beautiful Suncheon Lake Garden too, as its’ landscape consists of small hills all around the lake, giving the most beautiful reflections in the water. You can also go on a world tour right there and visiting Japan, Thailand, France, England, the Netherlands, China and many more through their traditional gardens!

P.S. Keep in mind that the garden is huge, and you will spend a good few hours exploring all what it has to offer. Thus, we highly recommended picking up a free map from the ticket booth, making it easier to follow the course.

3. Seonamsa Temple

Another place that will take you back in time. Resting in the midst of a lush forest on the Jogyesan Mountain, Seonamsa temple is one of a few temples in Korea, which up until today, breathes the traditional temple culture and really makes one forget the time. Right in front of the temple, you will find another treasure- Seungseongyo hermitage bridge built in 529 by a local monk!

4. Songgwangsa Temple (Stay)

It is easy to be deceived by the size of this temple, once you step in it looks incredibly huge, however, if you opt for a short hike on the Jogyesan mountain, you will be able to see the real size and beauty of the temple. Although visually one of the biggest temples in South Korea, it was actually even bigger before the Korean War! Around 150 monks practice there every year, and the temple has its’ doors open to people from all walks of life looking for Buddhist training or a brief immersion in the Buddhist life.

P.S. If you are up for a bit more exploration, you can easily hike between the two temples!

5. Suncheon Open Film Set

If you are a fan of either Korean history, Korean dramas or both, Suncheon Open Film Set will definitely give you the Goosebumps (and in the good way!) Previously acting as a military base, it now allows its visitors to step back in time, and experience Korea as it was in 1950s-70s! Being the largest film set in South Korea, the Suncheon Open Film Set consists of three astonishing villages, each reflecting a different time period!

If you’ve ever wondered where was the Monsta X ‘All In’ MV, Running Man, or East of Eden filmed then you’ve came to the right place! Of course, these are only a few to mention, as the site has been used for over 700 movies, dramas and TV programs! It is definitely every K-drama fans’ dream destination!

P.S. to enhance the experience even more, try on the school uniforms from the past! It will definitely help you experience the surroundings and will dwell as a great story in your memoirs and photos!

6. Nageupseong Folk Village

Once built to help defend the country against Japanese, the village was then a centre of a county. There are only a few folk villages left from the Joseon dynasty in South Korea, and Nageupseong is the last one left in its prefecture. However, the village is still well preserved as there are over 200 traditional houses remaining, many of which, are occupied by the residents. Another great opportunity to step back in time, creating a great contrast between the sights of Suncheon and the bigger metropolitan cities.

Apart from adoring the unique architecture of Joseon period, you can immerge in numerous activities making it a great day to remember! Check out the Dae Jang Geum film set, pottery and folk art, discover gayageum (traditional instrument) or learn more the traditional prison punishments. There is a lot to do for the whole family, making it a perfect day trip!  

Top Tip: To get from Suncheonman Bay Garden to Suncheonman Bay Wetland take the SkyCube! It will cut down the journey time while giving you a chance to see the beautiful gardens from up above too!

Have you ever wondered where filmmakers find their inspiration for the horror movies? For the realistic ghosts? Asian folklore has provided the writers with plentiful source, no wonder some of the most iconic horrors came from the Far East.

Traditional Korean culture was closely entwined with the spiritual world and mysticism and shrouded by belief that humans could communicate to spirit world via shamans. There are number of phantoms that ought to be feared in Korean folklore but none as memorable as the Gwishin. Cheonyo Gwishin (Virgin Spirit) would appear as a pre-pubescent, virgin female with long dark hair and white robes. The invention of this phantom was rooted in Confucianism. It was believed that women where ought to serve their husbands or fathers, and if they died virgins, their mission was unfulfilled and therefore they returned to earth to cause trouble.

There were few ways to relieve this unsettled ghost- including a building of phallic sculptures or by uniting female Gwishin with a male contemporary during shamanic ritual. However, sightings of male ghosts seem to be significantly rarer, leaving plenty of single and terrifying ghosts to roam abandoned hospitals, schools and woodlands.

Another common ghost allegedly often sighted at Jeju island is Mul Gwishin (Water Ghost). These are water ghosts appearing in lakes, seas, rivers and even bathtubs. They are characterized as having constantly wet clothes and excessively long arms. It turns out that Mul Gwishins often feel rather lonely under the water and seek companionship in unsuspected swimmers by grabbing them with their freakishly long arms and drowning them. Who said romance is dead?

Another version of Gwishin appears as outhouse phantom (Cheuksin). Cheuksin Gwishin, as suspected, is also a virgin female ghost that used to live on the ceiling of Korean outhouses and grow extensively long dark hair. These ghosts were pretty vicious and would strangle anyone that disrespected them from the ceiling with their hair.  This goddess had her comeback in the modern-time and has now been glamorously coined as the toilet ghost (Hojangsil Gwishin) and appears mostly by randomly flushing the toilet and throwing about pieces of toilet tissue, certainly had a de-motion in terms of responsibilities since the oat-house days.  

Now that we have learned all about the spooky virgin Korean spirits, naturally we should find some spots to meet them. Abandoned school, hospitals, woodlands or water sources are always a good bet, but below you will find some of the most iconic ghost hang-out spots. Ghost busters strap-in!

Gonijam Psychiatric Hospital- this place was nominated as one of the most haunted places in South Korea and one of the Top 10 haunted spots in the world. Urban legend suggest that 10 people died there and still appear in the eerie corridors of the hospital. However, the official records claim that the hospital was simply closed due to poor sanitation. The spot attracted so much attention that there is even a horror film dedicated to this spot (Gonijam Haunted Asylum). The hospital is not open to the public, therefore it is best to stick with the thrills on the big-screen.

Yongma Land- Another spot for thrill seekers, this is actually an abandoned theme park that has closed down in 2011 due to financial losses and an increasing competition from more grandiose establishments nearby. There have also been rumours of a girl dying on faulty rides, thus adding to the layer of mystery and possibility to witness a Gwishin. The theme park is open to the public, you can roam around and take-in the gone-by era and capture some best Insta-snaps (potentially with a local Gwishin or a K-Pop star).

Yeongdeonk House- one spooky place in a picturesque setting. According to rumours, this house has been built on a mass-grave of Korean Soldiers from the War. The ownership of the house went from hands-to-hands but all owners mysteriously died rendering the house somewhat haunted. This spot has attracted a number of occult followers and paranormal activity hunters who claim that many souls are present in its premises. It is a spooky place for potential Gwishin sighting and perhaps even a rarer male-equivalent, given all the soldiers?

These spots have now marked themselves as perfect locations for occultists, film-makers and K-pop stars.  Some of these locations are not open or recommended for visitors, Yongma land is the only site that is publicly open and within easy reach from central Seoul. So, don’t be afraid and take a trip to a by-gone 80’s atmosphere in Yongma land and take a chance of meeting Gwishin or a K-Pop star at your own risk.

In the midst of busy streets of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, there is a long road dedicated to dolls representing the Top K-pop groups who brought fame to Korea by introducing and spreading the Hallyu wave. Which means… you can take as many pictures as your heart desires with… BTS? SHINee? B1A4? Kara? You name it! 

Read about the achievements of Korean music stars shinning on the K-Star Road, and see, what made them gain a place on one of the biggest streets in one of most expensive areas in one of the greatest cities in the world! There are more than ten dolls along the road, do you think you are able to name them all?

Did you know that all the palaces in Seoul were burnt down during the Japanese invasion in 1592? However, Changdeokgung Palace became the first palace to be rebuilt in 1610. Changdeokgung Palace is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is regarded as a masterpiece of Korean palace architecture creating a harmony between the buildings its' natural setting.

4. Study Korean history. If you talk to a Korean person, soon enough you will realize just how proud they are of their country. There is a reason why! Korea has come through a lot, and standing where it stands now, there are a lot of incredible people that the country is thankful for. Have you heard of Yun Gwan Sun? Her bravery and love for her country created the national movement, which, at a later date, helped Korea break free from the Japanese occupation. This is just one young lady, there are many more national heroes worth discovering!

5. Learn about South Korean culture. Did you know that sleeping with a fan on might cause death? Well, at least that is what the famous Korean superstition is saying! The Korean culture is definitely different from the West- the cultural norms, the superstitions, the drinking rules- you name it! Learning a thing or two about it will definitely improve your trip to South Korea, even more, it is a fun way to spend an afternoon reading through the list too!

 6. Research about North Korea. Although it stands as a separate country now, the South Korean public hopes that one day the two will become one again. After all, up until 1945 it was one united country. Many families were separated and most have never seen each other again. Although it is not something you will be chatting away about while on your trip to South Korea, but it is good to have some knowledge about it. When you are visiting Seoul, you can also take a day trip to the DMZ, the only place where you can see North Korea right in front of you!

7. Watch a Korean drama/movie. As you may know South Korea is famous for it’s dramas and especially the movie ‘Parasite’ (have you seen it yet? It’s a must!) The Korean dramas caught an eye of many international fans due to it’s romantic nature. The characters are often well developed and the stories will keep you glued to the screen for an all-nighter (oops!). Have you seen Travel Through Romance? This is one of our top recommendations as it’s based in some of the most beautiful places in South Korea, it will definitely make you long for that trip!

8.  Why not make some Korean friends before your trip to South Korea? This might be an especially good idea for those traveling there solo. We know just how scary it might be, getting on your first solo trip to a country you’ve never been to. If you search the internet, you will soon learn that there are a few apps allowing people to make international friends! Just to name a few Hello Talk and MEEF are the most used apps as far as we know. However, take care when talking to people online and make sure you stay safe in the digital world and when you do meet your online friends for the first time.

9. Try a Korean recipe! Did you know that Korean food is extremely delicious? Once you try it you will know exactly what we mean! It will make your heart melt! While we are all home grounded, now it is a perfect time to have a little play around and try to cook some of the easier Korean dishes yourself! 계란말이 (gaeran amri) is a Korean egg omelet, it tastes delicious and it will only take you 10 minutes to prepare it! So why not give it a go!

10. Exercise! Well, this one is kind of obvious… But, you need to stay fit and healthy so that once the flights are open you can hop on the plane and explore all that South Korea has to offer! All these wonderful mountains and lakes! Never mind the delicious food you’ll eat everyday! It is important to stay fit and healthy to enjoy all what life (and Korea) has to offer!
